JROTC cadets organize memorial run, exceed expectations By Julian Pollitt, 15th JROTC Battalion BAMBERG, Germany – U.S Army Garrison Bamberg was struck with tragedy very recently. Four Soldiers – 1st Lt. Stephen “Chase” Prasnicki, Sgt. 1st Class Kevin E. Lipari, Sgt. Enrique Mondragon and Cpl. Darrion Hicks – lost their lives in service of their country. The garrison’s 15th JROTC Battalion was quick to create an event to properly honor the lives and service of these fallen warriors. The JROTC Cadets of USAG Bamberg honored the garrison’s fallen heroes May 10 by holding a 12-hour memorial relay run. The cadet’s wished to raise $1000 dollars to donate to Homes For Our Troops, an organization that builds homes for wounded Soldiers. More than 300 people showed up to participate and honor the fallen. The runners were broken into 25 teams and ran for 12 hours, racking up a total of almost 1500 miles. The runners pushed themselves to their limits, in some cases to the point of exhaustion, and in one case to the point of vomiting on the track. The cadets met their goal of raising $1,000 quickly. By the end of the run, they had eclipsed their originally intended goal and raised $5,325. “We never expected to raise over 5 times

Schweinfurt staff proves no match against middle school students By Jessica Jacobs, USAG Schweinfurt Public Affairs SCHWEINFURT, Germany – Tensions ran high at office water coolers around the garrison last Friday. But it wasn’t an uncertain employment forecast, nor the looming furlough or eventual garrison closure that raised stress levels. No, for a handful of recognizable garrison staff – both civilian and Soldier – they had to match wits with some of the brainiest middle school students in a public forum. Six adult community members competed against some of the brightest fifth- and sixth-graders from Schweinfurt Elementary/ Middle School May 24 in a trivia game based on a popular

quiz game show called Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? “I watched the movie Rocky the night before because I knew this was going to be a fight,” said Sgt. First Class Bryan Bearor, the Schweinfurt garrison chaplain non-commissioned officer in charge. But asked whether he was scared or had butterflies prior to the competition, “No comment” was all he said. “I didn’t prepare. I was hoping that my time as a fifthgrader would suffice,” said Artis Baskins, the director of the garrison’s operations office. “But I failed. I think I would have let my old fifth-grade teachers down.” (SMARTER, on Page 2)

(RUN, from Page 1) Army instructor, explained the importance of the yearly Service Learning projects. “It’s an opportunity for cadets to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real life,” said Roberts. “In my 8 years of teaching here, this is the biggest project the cadets have ever taken on.” The project was originally the idea of Cadet Command Sgt. Maj. Kristin Feezor, a cadet who permanently changed stations

before being able to see her work come to fruition. Despite her move, Feezor still stayed in regular contact with her former battalion to observe the progress of the project. To advertise the run, the cadets posted fliers throughout the garrison and met privately with each battalion to hand out pamphlets personally. The cadets were also interviewed by AFN and had a radio spot created to have the run advertised even further.

(SMARTER, from Page 1) The academic bowl-style competition consisted of two teams, pitting adult community members against fifth- and sixth-grade students, who earned spots after winning a series of try-outs, said Dan Wilson, a fifth-grade science teacher who, along with the Parent Teacher Student Association, organized the event. Representing the fifth grade were Corey Majerus, Samantha Ringlbauer and Auriela Ozuna, while Taylor Bare, Alex Chang and Olga Morales represented the sixth grade. The adult team included Ledward Librarian Christine Willis, Sean Hillyer of the 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery Regiment, Maj. Victor Deekens with the 72nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion, Baskins, the operations director, and Bearor and Chaplain Michael Oliver – both with the garrison chapel. Questions were collected from teachers at both grade levels from material that had been covered in this year’s standards, which included math, social studies, science, language arts, literature, music, art, health and physical education. “Dan Wilson the science teacher rigged the competition,” quipped Chaplain (Capt.) Michael Oliver. “There were way too many science questions.” At least one garrison employee contacted school officials to obtain insider information on the questions, according to a source close Lt. Odierno: Sexual assault, harassment cannot be tolerated in Army

By Lisa Ferdinando, ARNEWS WASHINGTON – Sexual assault and harassment are serious problems the Army is vigorously addressing, said Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Ray Odierno. Odierno testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee, June 4, along with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, service chiefs from the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, and six judge advocate generals. “These crimes violate everything our Army stands for and they simply cannot be tolerated,” Odierno told senators, as part of an oversight hearing on sexual assault and harassment in the services. “As chief of staff of the Army, and as a parent of two sons and a daughter, the crimes of sexual assault and harassment cut to the core of what I care most about, the health and welfare of America’s sons and daughters,” he said. Odierno said the Army is focused on eliminating the problem. “Two weeks ago I told my commanders that combating sexual assault and sexual harassment within the ranks is our number one priority,” Odierno said. “I said that because as chief, my mission is to train and prepare our Soldiers for war.” “These crimes cut to the heart of the Army’s readiness for war,” he said. “They destroy the fabric of our force, Soldier and unit morale. “We will fix this problem,” he pledged. Odierno said the Army needs to do more, and laid out five areas of specific concern: – preventing potential offenders from committing sexual crimes – investigating and taking appropriate action with every allegation of sexual assault and harassment – creating a climate where an individual is not afraid of retaliation or stigma for reporting a crime – ensuring individuals, units, organizations, and specifically commanders and leaders understand their responsibilities

– ensuring the chain of command is at the center of any solution to combat sexual assault and harassment, and that it is also fully engaged “We can and will do better,” he told the senators. “We must take deliberate steps to change the environment. We must restore our people’s confidence by improving our system of accountability.” Odierno said the military justice system was designed to give commanders the tools to reinforce good order by prosecuting misconduct with a variety of judicial and non-judicial punishments. He said commanders are able to prosecute crimes and punish minor infractions that contribute to discipline problems. Odierno also said his experience leads him to believe that the majority of the problems are the failure of some commanders and leaders to correctly administer military justice in compliance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice and current Department of Defense policies. “We must take a hard look at our system, from start to finish, to ensure that commanders and judge advocates are subject to appropriate checks and balances, all while protecting the interests of the victim and the due process

Under secretary, vice chief: Support for deployed troops Army’s top fiscal priority WASHINGTON – As two of the Army’s most senior leaders address fiscal challenges and the complexities of combat operations in Afghanistan, they remain firmly committed to the Army’s number one fiscal priority, supporting the warfighter. rights of accused Soldiers,” he said. Odierno said that in the last four years, 57 officers have been relieved of command. About half of those dismissals were related to issues with the command climate those officers created. Some had been deemed “toxic leaders.” Others were relieved because they had failed to create a command climate where it was clear that sexual assault and sexual harassment would not be tolerated. “It is up to every one of us, civilian, Soldier, general officer to private, to solve this problem within our ranks,” Odierno said. Over the last 12 years, the Army has demonstrated “exceptional confidence, courage, and resiliency in adapting the force to the demands of war,” Odierno said. The Army will tackle and fix the problem of sexual assault and harassment with the “same resolve.” As part of ongoing efforts, including in its Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program, the Army has focused efforts intensely on preventing sexual assault and harassment, educating Soldiers, responding to reports of assault and harassment, and providing victims with support and resources.

Army leaders outline fiscal challenges, importance of U.S. Army Europe WIESBADEN, Germany – Under Secretary of the Army Joseph W. Westphal and Vice Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. John F. The senior Army leaders outlined current Army priorities and received various briefs to enhance their situational awareness regarding key U.S. Army Europe, or USAREUR ... To read more, click here.

Ansbach celebrates contributions of Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders By Bryan Gatchell, USAG Ansbach Public Affairs ANSBACH, Germany – In celebration of May being Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the 412th Aviation Support Battalion and the U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Equal Opportunity office held an observance ceremony at Katterbach Physical Fitness Center May 31. May was chosen as the month to honor the contributions of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders because May marked the anniversaries of the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States in 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, the tracks of which were laid by Chinese immigrants. “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have had a deep impact on our society as leaders in all facets of American life,” said Col. Kelly J. Lawler, commander of USAG Ansbach, during his remarks, “thriving as athletes, public servants, scientists, artists, small business owners or as proud members of the United States Armed Forces.” Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph J. Chang, command sergeant major of the 412th Aviation Support Bn., served as guest speaker at the ceremony. In his speech he outlined the

achievements of the 100th Infantry Bn. and the 442nd Infantry Regiment during World War II. The 100th was composed of Hawaiian National Guard Soldiers who were in large part of Japanese descent. The 442nd was composed entirely of American Soldiers of Japanese descent. “If we’re talking about World War II, one of the countries we were warring with at that time was Japan; here’s a unit full of Soldiers with Japanese ancestry,” said Chang. “Along with 21 Medals of Honor, they had 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, 588 Silver Stars and over 9,000 Purple Hearts.” In his speech, Chang spoke of the Army’s ability to understand the culture of Southwest Asia, but that Soldiers should endeavor to understand the cultures of their fellow Soldiers. “If you ask an American Soldier nowadays, they can tell you about the culture of the people of Afghanistan and Iraq,” said Chang. “I’m almost positive because of the fact that we’ve been fighting for ten years. If you asked what the neighbors are doing, what the person in the foxhole is doing, whatever upbringing they had, whatever background they have, it’s possible they [have not] take the time to understand each other. We sometimes forget

or take for granted who is in our foxholes, our brothers and sisters in arms next to us. We want to make sure that we celebrate and we understand everybody’s culture.” In addition to the speeches, the ceremony included both food and dance, both of which the Soldiers in attendance were enthusiastic for. “The dancing was by far the best,” said Gavin Taylor, a Soldier with B Company, 412th. “And the food.” “We’re supporting our fellow Soldiers,” said Kelley Spaulding, another Soldier with B Co. “[Spc. Freddy] Pu’e was one of the lead people in the first dance.” The dance portion of the ceremony began with Soldiers stationed at USAG Ansbach performing a traditional Pacific Islander dance, led by Pu’e. This was followed by a series of dances performed by Paradise Blend, a cultural heritage group based out of USAG Hohenfels. This group practiced for several months before becoming an official group at the beginning of May. “Paradise Blend is a family-oriented group,” said Leilani Potasi, president of Paradise Blend. “Everybody in our group comes from different backgrounds. It’s

It’s not just Asians and Pacific Islanders; we chose to include anyone who wanted to join.” The group had volunteered to perform at a company barbecue, which Sgt. 1st Class Robert Forsythe, equal opportunity adviser for Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, USAG Ansbach, attended. Forsythe asked the group if they would like to join the event. “I told them about our event and that we’d really like them to come down, and they were more than happy to come on down and show us their culture,” said Forsythe. “Our budget was severely limited, so we had to rely heavily on volunteers within the community, volunteers within the ranks of our Soldiers, volunteers within the ranks of our civilian counterparts, and work together to piece together what we were able to come up with today.” “I’ve never been to Ansbach, and I was interested, so I wanted to support [the] event here,” said Potasi. “It helps us promote our name.” “I liked the dances,” said Staff Sgt. Katie Bates, B. Co., 412th. “The dances were awesome.” Throughout the gymnasium, boards were on stands featuring the art work of students of Ansbach Elementary School, who competed in a poster competition displaying their knowledge of the history and culture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. “It’s important for us to celebrate this observance because of all the sacrifices the Asian community has made for our country – not just now, but in the past as well, during the wars and even as far back as building the trans-continental railroad,” said Forsythe. “Most of the people that helped build that were Chinese immigrants, and the sacrifices they made to help our community – we need to show our appreciation for it and bring their culture to us.” To learn more about the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to the U.S. Army, visit www.army.mil/ asianpacificsoldiers.

Instead of watching grass grow, now you can do something about it By Bryan Gatchell, USAG Ansbach Public Affairs ANSBACH, Germany – With an exceptionally rainy spring preceding the coming summer months, lawns are primed to grow quickly. Though the garrison cannot directly provide lawn maintenance, it is ready to support keeping communities clean and kempt. U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach is an enduring garrison, but even as an enduring garrison the post is not immune to widespread fiscal constraints faced by the U.S. government as a whole. The garrison’s top priority is Army Force Generation, or ARFORGEN, which is the Army’s core process of building trained and ready forces. Its next largest mission is maintaining the life, health and safety of its Soldiers and community members. To ensure these missions are not negatively impacted by the federal government’s new fiscal climate, other services must be suspended. One service to be suspended is the grasscutting services contracted for housing. What this means for residents of the garrison is that keeping their lawns neat and tidy is now wholly within their power. Now is the chance for residents to participate in the beautification of their neighborhood with one of the most outward symbols of community pride – the finely trimmed lawn. And the garrison is available to support its residents. The Self-Help Issue Point at Katterbach Kaserne is located across from the fire station behind the Katterbach Physical Fitness Center. It is open Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and 1:45 to 4 p.m. The SHIP at Storck Barracks is at Bldg. 6555

With the contract for lawn-mowing services suspended at U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach, residents of the garrison have available dozens of lawnmowers to rent for free through the Self-Help Issue Points, located at Katterbach Kaserne behind the Katterbach Physical Fitness Center and at Bldg. 6555. Both SHIPs are open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. To learn more, call SHIP at Katterbach at 0980283-2149 or DSN 467-2149 or call SHIP at Storck at 09841-83-4666 or DSN 467-4666.

and is open Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. The SHIPs are closed during German and federal holidays. The SHIPs are in possession of a fleet of dozens of lawnmowers, as well as many other gardening, ground-keeping and home repair tools. These tools and machines residents living on post can check out. Lawnmowers, like their other equipment, are available for 72-hour rentals. The SHIPs provide the fuel and will help load the lawnmowers, which are collapsible, into the renter’s vehicle. All residents need to do is spend a pleasant hour soaking in fresh air, sunshine and the sweet scent of shredded chlorophyll.

For those who wish to get a workout while mowing, SHIP has available a few cylinder reel motors (the type that the mower must physically push forward to cut). The best time to mow is when the lawn is dry. The blades of the lawnmower will cut through the grass more easily, and the trimmings are less likely to adhere and clot the machine. According to personnel at the Katterbach SHIP, lawns should be mown every 8 to 10 days, maybe weekly considering the consistent rainfall in May. To find out more about renting lawnmowers, call SHIP at Katterbach at 09802-83-2149 or DSN 467-2149 or call SHIP at Storck at 09841-83-4666 or DSN 467-4666.

Something for everyone at USAG Bamberg’s community health fair By Bana Miller, USAG Bamberg Public Affairs BAMBERG, Germany – Third graders from Bamberg Elementary School learned how to properly brush their teeth at the Bamberg Community Health Fair May 31 at the Freedom Fitness Facility. The health fair had something for everyone. All garrison community members, including Soldiers, family members, retirees and civilians were invited to attend the fair. More than 30 community agencies were on hand to offer advice and services. New Parent Support Services; Women, Infants, Children; and Child, Youth and School Services were on hand with gift bags and information for children and parents. The Red Cross even had a CPR dummy on hand for demonstrations.

There were also booths representing branches of the medical clinic, including nursing and dentistry, where students and adults could pick up tooth brushes and remind themselves of properly hygiene techniques. The event supported the Army’s Ready and Resilient Campaign. Known as R2C, Army Secretary John McHugh signed the directive on Feb. 4 to integrate and synchronize the multiple efforts and programs designed to improve the readiness and resilience of the total force. The R2C campaign’s website is available at www.army. mil/readyandresilient, and is designed as a “one-stop shop” for resources related to Soldier resilience and readiness. The site includes sections for medical readiness, personal readiness, and Soldier transition issues.

Bavaria is perfect place for vacation of peaceful pedaling By Charles Stadtlander, USAG Schweinfurt Public Affairs SCHWEINFURT, Germany – The valleys rise up around you green and fertile. A castle looms, perched on a hill like a bird of prey that eyes you as you wind your way along the curve of the river. There are no cars around, and all you hear is the hum of your narrow tires and the steady rhythm of your breathing. Ahead, the river folds back on itself and you pump your brakes to prepare for the sharp turn. While many looking for a getaway this summer may be asking travel agencies for package deals to crowded beach resorts or booking discount airline tickets to out-of-the-way airports, they are overlooking a hidden gem of a vacation right here in Germany: a self-guided bicycle tour. Simple maps, available here and at most German bookshops, will take you everywhere you need to go. A bike path is called a Radweg in German, and though you’ll carry a map with you, the paths are well-marked. You may be able to simply look for the signs with bike logos and arrows and leave your map in your bag. There are 117 official marked

Typical Bavarian villages like the one in the background crop up by the dozens along every bike path. In the town square of these villages, there is almost always a tourist information center that offers information and booking for local accommodation.
