Thoughts of co-founder Steve Finn of Finn Franchise Brokers on the market for franchise and business sales in 2015

OK, so it is 2015 already! It is a big year already so far for franchising. With the new franchising code in place and ‘bedding down’ across the next few months, many a franchisor has been working hard to ensure that compliance is in place. Equally interesting are the winds of political change sweeping the country. With Victoria and Queensland both seeing changes in government, and the pressure ramping up nationally, it seems as if we are in for a bit of a roller coaster year politically. Anyway, that can all go on around us, but not divert our focus from making sure the business you choose is right for you, and running your business in the best way possible. To kick the year off, in this edition, we have for you: • The importance of using data at your local level — we’re giving easy access to it, • The market for buying and selling in 2015 according to one of the country’s top franchise business brokers, • A look at women in franchising, • New technology, websites and applications for business, • Hundreds of classifieds for sale and more. Check out all our articles, materials and listings at www.FranchiseBuyer.com.au. Have a wonderful start to the year!

‘Small’ Data as Valuable to You as Any ‘Big’ Data

T

he term ‘big data’ was one of the ‘buzzwords’ of 2014. For purposes here, we refer to the massive amount of data that large corporations and countries gather in the course of doing 'business'.

It is all sorts of data about every one of us and down to amazing levels of detail about our tastes, wants and desires.

Boradly, a key issue is the privacy cloud that hangs over ‘big data’, as we rightly should have concern about exactly what it is used for, especially in cases where a large amount of data is pieced together from different sources on us as individuals. Data Is Great for Your Business However, data is good — it is capable of doing great things in modeling and predicting all sorts of needs and uses in society for our benefit. Having data is also really good news for your business. We are focused on ‘small data’, as the biggest problem can often be in getting data that is packaged to suit and is useable for you in your local business, so what we like to call ‘small data’ is what you need. One of the country’s foremost experts on commercial and franchising business locations and

territories (using data), Peter Buckingham, explains further, “Data is incredibly important in the purchase assessment of any business, be it a franchise or not, as well as in the ongoing operation of the business you buy. It is about understanding the

business environment you operating in."

Peter adds, “I mean, we would barely buy anything else unless we knew the features and benefits

of it. Whether it is a $1,000 phone or a $500 fridge or other items, for the most part, we make it our business to understand all the details of the product. Think about the same situation when buying a business, you ask heaps of questions of the owner, and franchisor (I’d hope so), you want to know all about it. Yet, detailed data of who is in your trading area, broad demographics, and general information on potential opportunities and threats often gets totally ignored.” What to Do About It As previously mentioned, the biggest problem with data and its use has often been in not just the obtaining but also the packaging or presentation of the data, so it is actually usable by the small business owner/buyer.

detailed data of who is in your trading area, broad demographics, and general information on potential opportunities and threats often gets totally ignored.

Cover Story Some time ago, Peter Buckingham of Spectrum Analysis and Glenn Walford of Franchise Buyer got to talk about just such an issue. The result is a brand-new service that effectively presents data that every small business owner can use in researching the purchase of their business, and in the ongoing operation of their business, specifically in assisting with effective local area marketing (or LAM) initiatives. Getting Your Hands on Data Peter continues, “For many years at Spectrum Analysis, we have provided what we call a ‘Datapak’ but never had the IT systems to make it available to everyone via the Web. Many businesses, large and small, contact us on a regular basis for these, be it to understand an area or for a territory. Our aim is to make the ‘Datapak’ readily available off the Web and explain to people how this data can greatly benefit their business.” Pleasingly, Franchise Buyer and Spectrum Analysis have joined forces to make these Datapaks easily available to anyone. “Working with Glenn and the team at Franchise Buyer, we can now make these available for every postcode in Australia, and very soon we shall have them available as a radius around every main shopping centre and shopping strip across Australia. If you are

Our aim is to make the ‘Datapak’ readily available off the Web and explain to people how this data can greatly benefit their business. considering opening a business, these become the perfect way to understand the area and even have a business ‘hitlist’ to use as a starting point for your local area marketing.” Datapaks are priced at just $95 for your postcode area. For more information on getting the data you need to understand your area of an existing business or the area of the business you are considering buying simply contact info@franchisebuyer.com.au, and we’d be happy to assist you.

Market Happenings Find out what the movers and shakers in the franchise sector have been up to. Just one BIG one this time!

The CAD 12 billion takeover of the iconic Canadian coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons by the global fast-food giant Burger King has been finally approved with conditions by the Canadian Government. The takeover creates a global merger company called Restaurant Brands International, Inc. • The new company will have approximately USD 23 billion in system sales annually and more than 18,000 restaurants in 100 countries. • Tim Hortons and Burger King will continue to operate as two iconic, independent brands while benefiting from the new company’s global scale and reach and shared best practices. Both brands have been serving their respective guests, franchisees and communities for more than 50 years. • The transaction will enable Tim Hortons and Burger King to continue growing their unique brands and significantly accelerate international expansion and growth. • 3G Capital (New York, New York, USA) will own approximately 51% of the new company. • Oakville, Ontario, Canada will remain the global home of Tim Hortons; Miami, Florida, USA will remain the global home of Burger King. The new company will be based in Canada. The deal was completed following the approval from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, which followed the approval from Industry Canada and Tim Hortons shareholders. As a rule, Industry Canada reviews any foreign takeover over a certain value to determine whether the deal is a “net benefit” to the country.

The Federal Government has approved the takeover but with conditions under the Investment Canada Act: • To keep 100% of Tim Hortons employees at franchises across Canada and to preserve all of Tim Hortons’ charitable work. • To accelerate the opening of new Tim Hortons restaurants both in the United States and globally. • To establish the headquarters of the new company in Oakville, Ontario and to list the company on the TSX. • To manage Tim Hortons as a distinct brand, without co-branding of any locations in Canada or in the United States. • To maintain the Canadian franchisee rent and royalty structure at current levels for 5 years. • To ensure Canadians represent at least 50% of the membership of the Tim Hortons brand board of directors. Daniel Schwartz, former CEO of Burger King Worldwide, has been appointed as CEO of Restaurant Brands International. Marc Caira, former CEO of Tim Hortons, will serve as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Restaurant Brands International. Tim Hortons (founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario) is Canada’s largest quick service restaurant chain, with 4,590 system-wide restaurants, including 3,665 in Canada, 869 in the United States and 56 in the Gulf Cooperation Council at the end of September 2014. Burger King (founded in 1954 in Miami, Florida) is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world, operating in approximately 14,000 locations serving more than 11 million guests daily in 100 countries.

Data

Australian Postcode Datapak Spectrum Analysis has distilled a range of commercially relevant information into a single, easy-to-use package. By Peter Buckingham

F

eaturing a Detailed Map, a Demographic Summary, a Business Summary, and a Business Hit List, this Australian Postcode Datapak can assist with questions about what kinds

of potential customers live in the area, what kinds of businesses/employees are based in the area and how people are likely to move around within the area. The sections of the Datapak are explained in more detail

below.

Detailed Map

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In combination with the data of the other three parts of the Datapak, this map may be worth even more. It shows the boundary of the postcode that defines the area from which the other data was drawn. It shows the industrial and commercial precincts as well as schools, hospitals, parks and residential areas. It shows shopping centres and strips, with a key to their size. It shows the major and minor roadways that people use to move around within, through, into and out of the area. In short, it shows just about everything you might need to help with decisions about where to open a store, or where to place fixed advertising, or any other location-related issue.

Demographic Summary

This is the place to start if you have questions such as

What is the socioeconomic level of this area? • Which age groups are more prevalent? • How many people rent and how often do they • change address? Containing detailed measures of vital population indicators including age, income, marital status/family composition, profession, ethnicity and housing, the Demographic Summary offers valuable insights into the kind of customers that might be found in a given area. It even provides a comparison with the

most relevant major city or state, so you can quickly identify whether the area in question is above or below average on any of these indicators.

Business Summary

For any B2B type of business, the relevance of the Business Summary is clear. However, it is also highly relevant to many B2C businesses, because a large proportion of people make choices about where to shop based on where they work, either by ducking out during lunch or stopping in on the way home. The Business Summary details the number of businesses in an area, categorised by their size and also by the industry in which they operate. Some values in the local area are compared with the averages across the state or capital city. The target area can therefore be analysed in terms of the sheer number of businesses and employees, the proportion of businesses that are white or blue collar, the proportion of employees in a given field and even whether the area has many big businesses or is predominantly a small business.

Business Hit List

The Business List shows the company name, address, business type and the phone number (please read disclaimer below) of businesses in the area. Use it to prospect for customers, to establish referral or alliance relationships or to send out invitations for an opening or special offers. For areas with large numbers of businesses, the list has been split into manageable pieces and you can contact Spectrum Analysis to gain access to additional lists. To enquire about getting access to a Datapak for your area, please contact info@franchisebuyer.com.au

New Survey Reveals What Business Owners Wish They’d Done Differently Entrepreneurs feel optimistic about 2015, according to a survey conducted by The Alternative Board, but also wish they’d done some things differently early on in their businesses.

A

survey conducted by The Alternative Board (TAB) polled hundreds of entrepreneurs about their business outlook and what they would do differently, if they had the chance to start over. Given the option, 86% of entrepreneurs responded that they would still choose to start their own business but would invest their time and money differently, with more focus on sales, strategic planning and marketing. “We found that entrepreneurs are confident in their products and services but feel they would have benefited from better planning and more guidance,” says Doug Downer, CEO of The Alternative Board Australia. “24% of entrepreneurs say that better coaches and mentors would make the single biggest difference in their businesses if they did it over. Only 2% say that a better product would.” Between time and money, a majority of entrepreneurs would invest more money in their business if they could do it over. They would also put their dollars in different places, investing more in finding leads and quality talent. More than a third would increase their budgets for marketing, sales and lead development, whereas 20% would invest more in hiring and training employees. They would also adjust how they invested their time, with 27% putting more hours into strategic planning. What advice would seasoned business owners offer newly minted entrepreneurs? “Find your customers, surround yourself with smart people and make use of your team,” says Downer. The majority of respondents (80%) agreed that customer and client development is

more important than product and service development, and 38% wish they had delegated more to others. “It’s one thing to think about what you would do differently, but it’s another to have that guidance when you’re just starting out,” says Downer. “That’s why business owners are looking at solutions like The Alternative Board—they’re realizing that there are entrepreneurs who have been there and done that and can help them avoid learning these lessons the hard way.” Although, in hindsight, entrepreneurs would make different decisions about their businesses, they are also optimistic about what’s ahead. The majority of respondents saw their sales increase in 2014, and 82% expect increased revenues in 2015. The full results of the survey, along with a detailed analysis and infographic, are available on The Alternative Board website. Old Gus and His Pump: World-Class Service By Trent Leyshan

H

ow hard is it to find ‘good old-fashioned’ service these days? I mean the kind of service that makes you feel all ‘warm and fuzzy’ inside? The type of interaction between two people that creates such a meaningful experience for you—you just have to tell other people about it? We all love ‘great’ service. So why then it is so bloody hard to find? Great service is not that difficult to achieve. All it takes is some common sense and a willingness to make other people feel good. It’s that simple. In fact, it’s so easy anyone can do it and it takes very little effort. If you have ever attended one of my Naked Salesman programs, you will know that most of what I recommend can be adopted at zero cost and minimal effort. And that’s the beauty of it. This is not fluff—it’s the fundamental stuff that is easy to do but easier to forget. Particularly when you are time poor, stressed and under pressure. You don’t need to sell-upwards in your company to get it done. You don’t need to release big budgets to make it happen, it’s all up to you. You can apply this stuff tomorrow, if not right now, there is nothing stopping you.

Great service is not that difficult to achieve. All it takes is some common sense and a willingness to make other people feel good.

Let me give you an example of what I’m talking about: Not far from where I live is a petrol station run by an old man whom I call Gus. Gus is about 160 not out, has a long grey spindly beard, and shuffles in slow motion as he walks from the station office to the petrol pump. His petrol station is slightly rundown and doesn’t possess the flashy signage and features many of his nearby competitors display. Yet Gus has something other petrol stations in the area don’t: he’s got a constant line-up of customers. When you go to Gus’s petrol station, you may need to wait a few more minutes than you normally would at another petrol station. But you don’t mind because Gus takes his time and gives you good old-fashioned service. He shuffles over to your car, says g’day, and asks how your day is. He then proceeds to ask if you would like you car filled-up, pops the pump in your petrol tank and washes your windshield while you wait.

www.FranchiseBuyer.com.au

Marketing

Sometimes he will tell you that your tyres are low and, on demand, he pumps them up for you. Gus does all of this at his own time and expense. Gus is from the old school—he’s been around longer than most, so it’s clear he understands what makes people tick. Gus is not doing what he does to get a promotion, nor is it a cheeky publicity stunt to attract attention. He’s doing it because he loves it and it’s who he is. Clearly, all his customers love it too. I drive past three competing petrol stations on my way to see Gus. Both are closer and sell the same product. But I’m not interested in same-same. And I have never looked at the price. Gus could be ripping me off blind and I wouldn’t know—but I know he’s not. So long as Gus is on the pump I’ll happily line my car up and wait the extra few minutes for him. He’s that good and makes me feel that special! How many of your customers talk about you like this? If not, why not?

Gus is not doing what he does to get a promotion, nor is it a cheeky publicity stunt to attract attention. He’s doing it because he loves it and it’s who he is. Clearly, all his customers love it too.

Yes, business is tougher, more competitive, margins are narrowing, markets are broadening, we have less time, more stress, added demands and pressures, technology is evolving, things are getting smaller and faster … blah, blah, blah! This is the reality, so get over it. The winds of change have always blown and always will. Don’t use these winds as an excuse to give your customers average or poor service. You’re better than that! What is cool today is outmoded tomorrow. But one thing will always remain as a constant: People will always desire to be accepted, respected, appreciated and remembered. Never forget that, I guarantee if you don’t—your customers will never forget you. This is an excerpt from Trent’s book ‘The Naked Salesman’.

Lone Star Continues to Grow — Now With a New Look

P

opular restaurant concept Lone Star Rib House recently opened another business in Cockburn, Western Australia. This one is a little different to the locations that have preceded it. Franchisor Graeme Diamond explains, “What we have brought to the market here is a concept for the brand into the future — so we’re really excited with the shop design, layout and look of the business. Coupled with the fact that this business is a part of the recently opened new extension of the Gateway Shopping Centre, it has all come together really well.” Having had a sustainable presence in Australia for some time, the Lone Star ‘Bigger Than Texas’, rib house relaxed dining concept is primed for measured but strong expansion in the coming period across the country. Graeme also reported, “3 weeks of bookings already in place in the opening week just proves to us what we already knew — that the brand, and the casual dining concept, along with a bit of theatre thrown in, is a great combination for a great business. As part of our local area marketing initiatives, we attracted over 1,000 Facebook ‘Likes’ around this business within the first 72 hours. This will form a key part to our social media-based marketing activities on-

site locally going forward.” With full training provided, and no experience necessary, along with assistance with finance to secure your business, Lone Star Rib House is focused on helping the right people get into the ‘right’ business for them. The Business for Sale Market in 2015 Co-Founder and CEO Steve Finn of Finn Franchise Brokers talked us through his thoughts on the market for franchise and business sales in 2015. By Glenn Walford

W

e took some time out recently to talk with Steve Finn, Co-Founder and CEO of the leading, national franchise brokerage firm in the country, about the current and predicted conditions for the sale and purchase of franchise businesses in 2015. According to Steve, “We had record franchise prospect enquiry numbers in January — and after 10 years in franchise sales, that’s a significant result. This is also on the back of our strongest ever year of franchise buyer enquiries made to our brokers for 2014.” Of particular interest to the franchise marketplace is knowing what people are interested in buying. At Franchise Buyer, we find that this is one of the most common questions we get asked. “The strong enquiry generators are still the major brands in the food sector, with coffee shops and cafes bringing in the most enquiries. Brands like Subway and Domino’s always generate a lot of interest with their high-profile and stable presence in the marketplace, among others.” Steve Finn also notes a trend that we also see happening at Franchise Buyer. “There is a growing interest in people enquiring about white-collar businesses in the professional services sectors such as mortgage broking and others.” As for that age-old marketplace question about whether we are in a buyers or sellers market? Steve’s view is that, “It’s still what we would consider a buyers market, however compared to previous years where that was firmly the case, the pendulum is swinging back further toward being more equal than it has for some time.

There is a growing interest in people enquiring about whitecollar businesses in the professional services sectors such as mortgage broking as an example. While we see a lot of buyer enquiry for existing franchises, we have found that our franchisor referral program where we work closely with franchisors to provide leads for new sites is working well, so we are seeing an increase in enquiry on brand new locations as well.” If you would like to talk with Finn Franchise Brokers about buying, selling or growing your brand, you can make contact with them on 1300 535 932.

Does Your Marketing Have the All-Important “Wow Factor”?

Australia’s leading business marketing expert, John Dwyer (yes, he’s the guy who got Jerry Seinfeld to be the face a small Australian building society), gives his views on the key things to make sure you are considering for successful marketing.

By John Dwyer

W

hat I’m about to reveal to you is a marketing formula that has been proven to work for “any” business type, yet less than 5% of Australian companies use this strategy. During 25 years of providing marketing advice to businesses A to Z, I’ve tried every trick in the book when it comes to putting advertising campaigns together to build sales. Understandably, during this time, I’ve seen what worked and what didn’t. Therefore, I put together a proven successful formula that works — and it doesn’t matter what your franchising business is — this formula can attract new clients “like bees to honey” in a very quick timeframe. I called it my “Wheel Of Wow” Client Attraction System and it comprises of five components. Let me run through each of those components and you can “visualise” how this system can work for

20

January 2015

1. Identify your most profitable target audience. Note I say “most profitable.” Too many businesses generalise when it comes to identifying their target audience and they say things like “all women” or “all teenagers.” Successful marketers appreciate that the most

important thing any business needs to do is identify its most profitable customers and then look for more people who look like them! “My building society client thought that anyone over 25 who was married or in a relationship” was the home loan target audience. When I convinced them that “people over 35 years of age buying their second or third home were the most profitable customers” (because they will be borrowing more and they are more likely to be loyal), the light came on and their entire marketing shifted toward that older demographic. Think about how this applies to your business.

2. Create a wow! You don’t want to sell on “price” — the simple fact is that “price discounting” is unsustainable. Therefore, just as McDonald’s successfully has taken our eyes off the price of the Happy Meal for decades because of the free plastic toy, you need to do the same for your product or service. It’s all about “value-adding,” not joining the crazy world of “price discounting.”

Wheel Of Wow Client Attraction System: a proven successful formula that works — and it doesn’t matter what your franchising business is — this formula can attract new clients ‘like bees to honey’ in a very quick timeframe. 3. Use “problem/solution” in your messaging. Panadol and Nurofen have got it right — they show a typical prospect with the headache, and then 15 minutes after taking the tablet, white doves and heavenly music appear because the headache is gone. So, therefore, think about your prospects and how you can identify their problem or frustration and then how you can provide the solution. It’s all about the “pain to pleasure” persuasion tactic. Smart insurance companies show a graphic of a home burning down or being burgled when they’re selling home and content insurance. Jenny Craig does a wonderful job of “problem/ solution marketing” and demonstrates the wizardry of the company’s recipe program by using “before and after” case studies. Think about on how you can do the same.

Seinfeld Marketing Guy Delivers Miracle Sales Increases for Aussie Businesses! February 13 Gold Coast seminar to show business owners how to attract new clients in 2015. Jerry Seinfeld gets hundreds of requests from businesses around the world, asking him to endorse their products. He says no to 99% of them. One exception was a proposal from Australian marketing guru, John Dwyer, who shocked the marketing world when he coaxed Jerry Seinfeld out of retirement to be the spokesman for one of his clients, the Greater Building Society. This was a coup of gigantic proportions.

“Wow Client Attraction Formula” Works For Any Industry! Dwyer is a marketing maverick – his “thinking” is refreshingly unconventional and very different from most advertising agencies. It’s based on “emotional direct-response” techniques – both online and offline. Dwyer says, “When you’ve done as much marketing for all sorts of businesses as I have, you learn what works and what doesn’t. And as a result of years of testing ideas, I have created a Client Attraction System that enjoys incredible sales results.” Owners of both large and small businesses have heralded Dwyer’s Wow Client Attraction Formula as ingenious and it has been proven to work across more than 50 industries.

Butcher Makes An Extra $1 Million From One Of Dwyer’s Wow Ideas! And the campaign delivered whopping dividends to the building society, with its home loan market share tripling in just 24 months. Even Seinfeld himself said Dwyer “was the cleverest marketing person he had ever worked with.” Now THAT’S an endorsement of the highest order! Dwyer is an “in-demand” business marketing coach and speaker, who has an extraordinary record of massively increasing sales for both big and small businesses. He is a much sought-after keynote speaker for industry and company conventions. His business is aptly called The Institute Of Wow and he holds world records for the avalanche sales increases he has delivered to clients like Channel 9 (world ratings record), KFC, News Ltd., Westfield, the NRL and Madura Tea – just to name a few. And he’s revealing his “wow marketing system” to business owners at his 1 day Gold Coast Seminar on Friday 13th February, 2015. His clients refer to him as “The Business Whisperer”, as his advice has transformed many businesses virtually overnight. One Sydney tourism business saw annual sales skyrocket from $10m to $14m with just one of his “outside the box” ideas.

07 55 919 566. At this event, Dwyer will also be showing business owners how to create a website that “sells”. Dwyer says, “About 90% of business websites are woeful, they are simply information centres and have none of the persuasive direct-response inclusions that turn visitors into buyers. At my event I’ll be demonstrating how easy it is to fix your website and turn it into a 24/7 sales machine.” The event will cover both “B to B” and “Business to Consumer” marketing ideas.

Sign Company Doubles Sales In A Month! Trond Smith of Adphence Signage implemented Dwyer’s system and says, “Within just a month, my sales had doubled. Not only did his system create more leads, but it also increased my conversion rate from 25% to nearly 80%.”

4. Fix your website and be different online! No longer is your Director of First Impression your front desk assistant — it is now your website. And most businesses’ websites are woeful — they’ve been put together by “tech-heads” who don’t have an ounce of marketing skills or sales knowledge. The website designer might be a reasonable artist and you may have a website that’s pretty — but that counts for nothing. You need your website designed by someone who understands marketing, not a graphic artist. It needs all the direct response components you can muster — from benefit-driven headlines to video testimonials. Your website needs the following at the very least: • A compelling “benefits headline” that evokes and intrigues • Persuasive copy that highlights the problem/ solution scenario • A welcome video that quickly explains the benefits that your product/service provides • A data capture facility such as a FREE report or video download — the idea being to grab the contact details of all visitors • Video testimonials from the clients saying how wonderful your products/services are If you don’t have these components, you’ve got an information-based website “that is never going to convert.” 5. Build repetitive trade. When was the last time you went to a restaurant and

they asked for your contact details? The answer is probably “never!” There were 100,000 people at the AFL Grand Finals and over 80,000 at the NRL Grand Finals, yet neither of these sporting bodies knows who was there! The ticketing agencies do, but not the sporting body. Can you imagine how much money was left on the table? Imagine how many caps, T-shirts and other memorabilia could be marketed to that massive supporters’ list if they knew how to contact them!

Think about any business that you deal with and I bet 95% of them never ask the contact details. ... start collecting client data and then exploit this by offering benefits for their loyalty. Think about any business that you deal with and I bet 95% of them never ask the contact details. I can walk into Bunning’s, McDonald’s, Woolworths and Dreamworld tomorrow and they’ll never know who I was! Crazy, crazy stuff. So the first thing you need to do is start collecting client data and then exploit this by offering benefits for their loyalty. It’s as simple as that — many cafés have been doing it with their Coffee Card for many years, where you get a stamp for every coffee and then after you save 9 stamps, you get a free coffee. Hopefully, this “Wheel Of Wow” formula is of value to you. If you like more of these “direct-response” wow factor marketing advice, just visit www.theinstituteofwow.com or phone 07 55-919-566.

Options To Finance Your Business Purchase James Scurr of Cashflow It® takes us through the options of obtaining finance for your business purchase. By James Scurr

S

tarting any business or franchise poses great challenges to every entrepreneur. The total amount of money that you need to put into your franchise is a major consideration and depends on the nature of your enterprise. During the start-up stages, your cash flows are often expended quicker than you plan as unexpected costs arise. However, you can find the business finance needed for your newly established franchise. There are many types of business finance available for your franchise, and it can be tailor-made for your specific needs. Debt Finance One option is debt finance from banks and financial institutions. These loans come with a payment obligation schedule and a fixed interest rate depending on your chosen terms (either short-term or long-term payments). An established relationship with your bank is advantageous before attempting to secure a loan for your franchise. Debt finance usually requires personal collateral as security, such as your home. Grants Another finance option is through grants, especially if you are establishing a technology-oriented franchise. Grant opportunities given by governments or by private investors are highly competitive because they are giving you free money. These grants correspond with strict guidelines, though, and can have ongoing obligations on you depending on the type of grant.

24

January 2015

Equity Finance This option is simply taking funds in exchange for a share in the ownership of your franchise. Equity finance generally does not involve you taking on debt or re-paying the money for a specific period. The downside of equity finance is that you do not have full control of your business. The “additional” investors mean you won’t have 100% ownership of your small business. Equipment Finance Franchise equipment finance is another option available to would-be franchisees trying to secure their new small business. Equipment finance is a great way to acquire the equipment needed in your franchise. Typically you won’t need to put up assets like your home as collateral because the equipment funder will use the equipment itself as security. Equipment finance also gives you numerous flexible options around choosing terms, payouts, ownership or even returning your equipment. Do your research and learn from other franchisees, so that you will be guided on what is best for your particular franchise’s success and growth. Cashflow It® Cashflow It® is a specialist franchise equipment finance company and the only equipment-funder focused solely on the Australian franchise industry. Franchising

Women in Franchising in Australia By Annaliza Lopez

I

n the past years, all over the world as well as in Australia, a remarkable increase in the number of women involved in the franchising industry has been observed. Significantly more franchisors are recruiting women franchisees in their business. Women have established themselves in the fields of health and fitness (including spa and massage therapy), beauty and personal care (including hair care), senior or home care, retail food & beverages (including coffee and frozen yogurt), children’s services, pet services, advertising and printing, laundry and maintenance, to name a few. Why then women choose, and get attracted to, franchising? Also, why are more and more women are recruited as franchisees? One reason is that women are believed to have an ideal skill set to run a franchised business. In general, women prefer to work in a pleasant work culture and environment. By nature, women have the ability to prioritise and are detail oriented, organised, good listeners and unbelievable multi-taskers — characteristics that are essential to start and grow a franchise. Women can easily attract and build a support network of loyal customers because they are the ones most likely involved in the community and even in the marketplace. Most women manage their household, so they are considered financially responsible. When it comes to staff management, women are more intuitive than men; this is sometimes an important factor in employee evaluation and commendation. A challenge for many women in franchising, though, is running a business while raising a family, and creating a sort of work-family balance by having flexible working arrangements. The flexibility of franchising, in that you are able to choose the business that best suits you and your lifestyle and commitments, is a key factor in attracting more women to the sector. Indeed, franchising is an excellent option for experienced, ambitious and business-minded women who desire to also create a balance between work and life outside it.

Finding women franchisees as role models succeeding in franchising in Australia is not difficult at all. We wanted to highlight the achievements of four outstanding women franchisees that have been awarded the Franchise Woman of the Year by the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) for the consecutive years of 2011 to 2014. In particular, we focused on the specific area of franchising these women achievers got themselves involved into, and what they have contributed to the franchise industry in the country as a whole.

Exciting Year Ahead for Expos

A

fter three successful Franchising & Business Opportunities Expos last year in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, organiser Specialised Events is preparing for another bumper year in 2015. Registrations have opened for the Sydney show, which will be held on 27–29 March at the Royal Hall of Industries at Moore Park. “It promises to be a very exciting event with even more exhibitors than last year,” says Exhibition Manager Fiona Stacey. “Visitors and exhibitors all love the venue; it is so convenient and offers excellent access by car or public transport.” As always, a wide range of industries will be represented at the Sydney Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo, including renowned brands such as The Coffee Club, La Porchetta, Minuteman Press, Endota Spa and Poolwerx. Stacey adds that the Melbourne show in August 2014 wrapped up a huge year. “We were thrilled with the crowds of visitors who genuinely found it useful to meet face-to-face with representatives from companies they were interested in and to dig deeper into why franchising is such a successful business model,” she says. “Many walked away with clear ideas of businesses they would like to invest in, and it’s so

exciting to see someone’s dream become reality.” Stacey says she sees many visitors who find that meeting exhibitors at the Expo is far more valuable than limiting their research to websites and email. “I think it’s really worthwhile to look through the list of exhibitors first and do some preliminary research; maybe even set up some appointments at the show. Then you can make the most of your time on the day. The entry cost is discounted if you pre-register online, and there is an abundance of information available on every aspect of being your own boss,” she adds. “It’s really time to stop dreaming and start doing.” Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo 2015: SYDNEY: 27–29 March at Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park BRISBANE: 18–19 July at Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, South Bank MELBOURNE: 21–23 August at Melbourne Exhibition Centre, South Wharf For more information, go to www.franchisingexpo.com.au.
