“Your boss has given you this factory. What do you think?” is a project developed in 2015 by Jacopo Miliani. For a few weeks, Miliani chatted with users of several gay social networks impersonating the film script of Teorema (Theorem, Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1968) to engage in conversation. This book reproduces the exchanges taking place during this experiment, following the order of the script. The script was used in its entirety without any cuts or adaptations and each line was quoted individually. In the book, we can read the responses which these quotes triggered. Whilst general information about each user is included, such as location and/or age, their anonymity is preserved. Inversely, Miliani has used his personal and presumably preexisting profiles to engage with these online communities. Teorema stands out as a particular piece in Pasolini’s body of work. Firstly envisioned as a theatre play, it was later developed as a book published in February 1968 and as a film, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September of the same year. Both forms were produced in parallel, working as deeply related and yet autonomous entities: neither the film was the base for the book nor did the book follow the libro2.indd 4-5

film’s guidelines, instead both developed from the original idea. In Pasolini’s words, printed in the first edition of the publication: “Teorema was born as if on a gilded background painted with the right hand while the left hand was working in a large wall fresco”1. Both the book and the film tell the story of an affluent Milanese household: father, mother, sister, brother and their servant. A short telegram announces an unexpected visit: “I arrive tomorrow” (Arrivo domani). The visitor, whose name we never know, quietly and steadily seduces everyone and uncovers repressed layers of each individual’s personality. After developing intimate connections with all characters, the visitor announces his unforeseen departure, which leaves the family in a void they were not aware of prior to this visit. Their different reactions to the young man’s absence - from promiscuous behaviour, to martyrdom, psychologically driven paralysis, reclusion in a bare land and nihilistic art production - mark the implosion of a family through a series of cathartic explosions. What is Miliani’s aim in quoting such narrative in contemporary online gay chat communities? A direct connection might be found through sex. It is through sexual contact that the visitor bonds with the household members and uncovers their hidden fears which are resolved momentarily. Gay online chatrooms are commonly used as a means to encounter sexual partners. 1

At the same time, and perhaps more importantly in this context, chatrooms are also channels where to experiment with identity, probing different characters that, in direct or subtle ways, connect with the user’s own personality. Masquerade is a strong topic in Teorema, as the characters conceal secrets and forms of being from each other. The visitor himself is under a mysterious guise as no detail from his past life is ever given nor are we made aware of why he arrives or departs, where he comes from or where he is going. Still on the topic of masking, it is also worth mentioning that Miliani’s gesture of quoting Teorema echoes the constant citations of art history, Marxism, the Bible, or Dostojevski contained in the film as well as in the book. This creates a play of references which illustrates Pasolini’s personal beliefs wrapped under his selection and appropriation method. Both Miliani’s project and Teorema present a dialectics between individuality and the collective. Whereas in Teorema the conflict is between the oppressing gravity of the family institution and its members, in the online chats there is a similar friction between dominant forms of representation and each members’ individuality, whose dynamics are being tested at each interaction. In this sense Miliani’s use of Teorema’s script might be seen as a means to disrupt business as usual. As a matter of fact, it is not often that political conversations happen in such contexts even though these virtual spaces could be easily deemed highly political territories. By inserting Teorema’s phrases in such a decontextualized manner, Miliani is probing and 02/11/15 15:09
monitoring the readiness of the users to discuss topics which are usually absent from these chats. Not only does he explore how open people might be to engage in discourse production, but he also tests the limits and boundaries of what he perceives as a “normalisation of the gay scene, whereby even anonymous sex has a set of rules which are hardly changeable”. The responses range from: surprise, lack of interest, humour, disregard for the content in the continuation of sexual pursuit, subverting what is being told or no response at all. In a way Miliani is acting as the visitor in Teorema but, instead of promoting love (through sex) as a tool for change, like the character did in a paradoxical echo of the 60s countercultural ideals as well as of the christian preaching of Jesus, he removes sex and seduction from the equation. Thus, he creates a hybrid and novel space out of confrontation, a new context which is full of potential due to its contextual foreignness: the fact that he is not introducing his project or mentioning that he is using Pasolini’s words produces an unclear scenario that counteracts the usual small talk dictated by mere sexual interest in the other. Sex, as Teorema points out, is also a path to knowledge: the characters connect with their own selves through and as a consequence of having sex with the visitor. Likewise, online dates allow a number of people with different backgrounds to get to ‘know’ each other. The ability to surpass boundaries related to geography, wealth or education, is arguably one of the most vital and political potentials of chatrooms in general. In a similar way to what gay bars and clubs used to be, and, to some extent still are, the online gay scene is a space of libro2.indd 8-9
soft boundaries and mixing. However, it progressively is getting more and more fragmented as it tries to cater for specific target groups. Perhaps Miliani’s aim is precisely to underline such potential, usually less visible and underused, reframed in a way that echoes how neoliberal economics transforms everything into a commodity: web browsing becomes a series of ‘shop window purchases’. Miliani’s gesture aims at subverting this order of things and at making visible the oppression embedded in a one-sided use of such platforms, which hold many more varied possibilities. He is not opposed to or judgmental about the use of online platforms for purely sexual motives, but he points out that the full potential of such spaces is limited by singular normative forms of usage. In a way, the recurrent barren landscapes in the film Teorema echo the single and harsh aim of finding sex inside a virtual social network, but they could also be related to Miliani’s book representing, for the reader/ spectator, an abstract field still open to be constructed or redeveloped. There is a wide number of possibilities which, like the visitor, might or might not arrive tomorrow.
