Le documentaire fait partie intégrante de l’ADN de France 5. Ainsi la grille y a consacré 3 832 heures en 2009. Notre désir d’accompagner le téléspectateur dans son ouverture sur le monde se traduit notamment par le décryptage des faits de société, de la géopolitique et des principales tendances du monde contemporain. Ainsi, parmi l’offre élargie, nous diffuserons de nombreux documentaires-événements et célébrerons les indépendances africaines grâce à une série ambitieuse de 4 x 90’ : Afrique(s), une autre histoire du XXe siècle. Cette année encore, France 5 innovera avec de nouveaux rendez-vous : l’un consacré aux faits de société à l’international ; l’autre aux sciences à travers notre quotidien, tels que les ados et le sommeil, ou le QI. Par ailleurs, nous retrouverons deux grandes séries — J’ai vu changer la Terre et Verdict —, mais aussi nos rendez-vous réguliers : Le Doc du dimanche, Empreintes, Superstructures, Le Doc sauvage, ainsi que les soirées dédiées à l’histoire, à la société, à l’économie, à la découverte, aux arts et à la culture. Sur le Web A l’occasion de la diffusion d’Afrique(s), le portail documentaires.france5.fr proposera une animation interactive. Elle sera composée de sept grandes thématiques qui jalonneront l’histoire africaine de 1885 à aujourd’hui : L’Afrique partagée ; L’Empire du silence ; Le Bal des indépendances ; Le Temps des dictatures ; L’Aurore des démocraties ; Vents nouveaux, vents contraires ; La Longue Marche vers l’unité. Cet espace sera aussi enrichi d’interviews inédites de grandes personnalités africaines, d’archives de l’INA, de cartes et de textes complémentaires.

AFRIQUE(S), UNE AUTRE HISTOIRE DU XXE SIÈCLE Trop longtemps, l’Afrique n’a eu ni visage, ni parole, ni mémoire. Sa seule histoire était celle qu’écrivaient à sa place ceux qui l’ont pillée : récits de peuples sauvages qu’il fallait éduquer, de dictatures écrasées de soleil, de catastrophes humanitaires. Comme si elle n’était pas assez adulte pour se raconter et révéler sa profonde identité. Cette série en quatre volets revient sur cent ans d’histoire du continent noir, à travers la voix de ceux qui, de près ou de loin, ont pris part à son réveil et l’ont fait entrer dans le XXIe siècle. En septembre 2010, la collection Empreintes entame sa quatrième saison. Initiée en 2007 par Philippe Vilamitjana, à l’époque directeur de l’antenne et des programmes de France 5, et portée depuis lors par Annick Cojean et Arnaud Ngatcha, respectivement directrice et responsable des documentaires de la collection, ce projet audiovisuel d’envergure poursuit, cette année encore, le même objectif : proposer au téléspectateur un tête-à-tête de 52 minutes avec des personnalités françaises ou francophones qui marquent notre époque. Catherine Deneuve, Annette Messager, Eva Joly, Sophie Marceau, Bernard

Arnault, Charles Aznavour, Carole Bouquet, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jacques Dutronc, Bertrand Tavernier, Edouard Glissant, Alexis Gruss, Erik Orsenna, René de Obaldia, Michel Onfray, Eddy Mitchell, Bernard Pivot ou encore Christian de Portzamparc ont accepté, pour cette saison 4, d’ouvrir leurs portes aux réalisateurs et aux réalisatrices qui les ont sollicités. PORTRAITS D’UN NOUVEAU MONDE Au tournant de ce XXIe siècle, l’histoire s’accélère, de nouvelles puissances émergent, le monde bouge. A quoi ressembleront nos sociétés demain ? Tout au long de l’année 2010, Portraits d’un nouveau monde, collection de vingt-quatre web-documentaires multi-auteurs (réalisateurs, photographes, journalistes…), incarnent ces changements à travers des histoires particulières d’hommes, de femmes ou de lieux. Inaugurée avec le premier volet, La Chine, en février, suivie par L’Emigration, l’aventure continue avec un troisième volet qui marque un tournant dans la collection. En juin, L’Urbanisation de la planète est à la une avec quatre nouveaux web-documen-

taires et le site s’enrichit de nouveaux scénarios interactifs, mais aussi de nouvelles interfaces de visionnage et de navigation, par mots-clés, par portraits… Autant de chemins et de regards croisés, toujours au service des contenus, enrichis eux aussi grâce à des liens avec Courrier international. Toutes ces nouveautés s’ajouteront à la palette multimédia qui dessine mois après mois Portraits d’un nouveau monde : un monde interactif dans lequel l’internaute peut naviguer, visionner, lire, cliquer, approfondir, partager son point de vue, selon sa sensibilité…

« Urbanisation, Maximum City » En exclusivité sur www.france5.fr/PNM à partir du 25 juin. En 2050, plus des deux tiers des humains vivront dans une ville… Cette urbanisation accroît la taille des mégalopoles, crée des ghettos de pauvres et de riches. Le Doc du dimanche Initié en janvier 2008, et présenté par la journaliste Claire Fournier, Le Doc du dimanche s’intéresse chaque semaine à la société française. Des difficultés de logement pour les étudiants à l’image touristique de la France à l’international, en passant par la surveillance de l’espace aérien par l’armée de l’air pour assurer notre défense, les avantages et inconvénients des maisons en kit

ou encore le transit animalier légal et illégal à l’aéroport de Roissy, ce rendez-vous hebdomadaire de 52 minutes, à l’écriture attrayante et dynamique, répond à la curiosité et aux préoccupations du public par le choix et la diversité des questions abordées.

Trente ans et plus si aFFInités Les péripéties urbaines d’hommes et de femmes confrontés à leurs rêves, leurs désillusions, leurs choix de vie ! Tous les trentenaires interrogés dans ce film sont à un tournant de leur existence : carrière, amour, réussite, maternité, sexe… Des scènes de vie concrètes et des confidences permettent de mettre en évidence les pannes qui font obstacle à leur épanouissement. Pannes de rencontre, de solidarité, de communication, d’ascenseur social… Les différents protagonistes sont à la fois témoins et acteurs. Entre engagement et

Serviteurs de Dieu, le monde secret du Vatican

Violences conjugales (En développement) En France, une femme meurt sous les coups de son conjoint tous les deux jours et demi. On estime que 20 % des homicides commis chaque année sont dus aux violences conjugales. Le risque pour une femme de se faire agresser est plus élevé dans son foyer que dans la rue. Face à ce fléau inacceptable qui touche toutes les catégories sociales, le gouvernement a décidé de renforcer la lutte contre les violences faites aux femmes et d’en faire une « grande cause nationale » en 2010. Pour prévenir et endiguer cette forme de maltraitance, il existe des solutions concrètes. L’objectif de ce documentaire est de dresser un état des lieux de la situation aujourd’hui, en montrant la complexité de mise en place des nouveaux dispositifs avec leurs limites, leurs faiblesses mais aussi leurs réussites.

Les Nouveaux Détectives Les détectives ont changé de visage : au-delà des adultères, leurs enquêtes s’étendent aujourd’hui aux conflits familiaux, aux prestations compensatoires, mais aussi à la fraude à l’assurance, au vol en entreprise ou à la surveillance préventive des employés… Parcours obligé pour exercer la profession : une formation universitaire obligatoire à Assas, l’agrément préfectoral et le contrôle par la Direction centrale du renseignement intérieur en attendant, peut-être, leur reconnaissance prochaine comme auxiliaires de justice. Sophie et Stéphanie découvrent le métier à l’université. Cours de filature et de psychologie du fraudeur sont au programme, puis elles intègrent un cabinet de détectives pour un stage. Cédric et Guillaume, plus aguerris, enquêtent déjà sur le terrain. En les suivant, le film révèle une profession à l’éthique très personnelle, qui permet de s’aventurer sur des terrains que la justice peine à atteindre. 52 min. Auteure-réalisatrice Carole Cheysson. Le Vatican est l’une des cités les plus anciennes et les plus mystérieuses de la planète. Pendant des siècles, cette ville-Etat a été l’objet de légendes innombrables, sans jamais trop en révéler sur ses secrets. Plus de 5 000 personnes y travaillent chaque jour, sous l’égide du pape, au sein d’une administration complexe qui oriente plus d’un milliard de catholiques dans le monde. Mais qui sont ces personnes qui gèrent le Vatican ? Pour la première fois, ce documentaire propose de partir à la rencontre des « serviteurs de Dieu ». Gardes du corps, cardinaux, secrétaires, photographes...

remplissent un grand nombre de fonctions, unis par une foi inébranlable et la conviction de travailler pour le bien suprême. Au travers de rencontres exceptionnelles et inédites, une plongée dans les arcanes de l’Eglise catholique au cœur d’une institution vieille de 2 000 ans.

La Justice face à l’enfant

Les Misérables

Il y a quelques années, la justice pour enfants était plus douce. L’excuse de minorité jouait directement en leur faveur. Aujourd’hui, la priorité est à la répression. Le moindre incident qui implique un jeune est monté en épingle et la justice veut se montrer exemplaire dans la punition. Comme si, désormais, nous passions de l’enfant « en danger » à l’enfant « dangereux ». La réforme de la justice pénale pour mineurs, qui devrait être votée bientôt par le Parlement, va sans doute confirmer ce tournant majeur. Les ados sont-ils devenus plus dangereux qu’avant ? Seraient-ils moins sensibles à l’autorité ? La délinquance juvénile est-elle réellement en augmentation ? Autant de questions qui se posent à l’heure où l’on parle de l’explosion de la violence à l’école, de gardes à vue de mineurs de 14 ans… Le film suit des jeunes impliqués dans des crimes ou délits, depuis leur mise en cause jusqu’à leur jugement au tribunal de Valenciennes où se croisent parents, enfants, avocats, éducateurs et psychologues.

Il y a cent cinquante ans, Victor Hugo stigmatisait avec justesse la misère de son temps dans son œuvre majeure, Les Misérables. La société actuelle est-elle si différente ? Les marchands de sommeil du début du XXIe siècle ne sont-ils pas les Thénardier d’aujourd’hui ? Adrian, le petit Roumain de la porte Dorée, qui glane quelques sous en nettoyant à la va-vite les pare-brise des voitures, n’a-t-il pas l’air de Gavroche ? Et certains policiers zélés, tel Javert, ne traquent-ils pas les laissés-pourcompte du monde moderne avec un acharnement inadéquat ? Ce documentaire s’inspire de la démarche d’Hugo mais dans le sens inverse. L’écrivain, avant de s’atteler à son roman, avait longuement enquêté sur les misères de son époque. Le réalisateur de ce film part, lui, à la recherche de ses personnages.

Deux documentaires pour découvrir l’incroyable aventure de la TNT, de son début à la bascule actuelle du pays vers une diffusion numérique. Le projet de loi instaurant la TNT a constitué une véritable révolution dans le domaine de la télévision en multipliant l’offre pour les téléspectateurs et en favorisant une concentration économique et capitalistique des différents opérateurs. Mais au-delà, l’arrivée de la TNT a déclenché une guerre sans merci entre les chaînes

privées et publiques, plus particulièrement TF1, qui a, dans un premier temps, raté ce virage. Témoignages des différents acteurs à l’appui, c’est ce grand chamboulement du paysage audiovisuel que racontent ces deux films conçus et montés comme un thriller économique. 2 x 52 min. La Salle des profs : cris et chuchotements

Le malaise enseignant est un thème récurrent. Tantôt on incrimine les réformes successives qui ont rendu les programmes, les finalités et les valeurs de l’enseignement illisibles, tantôt on déplore l’inadéquation des contenus et l’impréparation des enseignants face à des publics scolaires difficiles, tantôt on se plaint du manque de considération dont les enseignants pâtissent. Sans bureaux, ces derniers se retrouvent obligatoirement dans un espace collectif qu’est la salle des profs. Plaque tournante entre l’extérieur et la classe, ce lieu est la chambre

Les Français et le Rire De Louis de Funès à Kad Merad, de Fernand Raynaud à Coluche, de Jacqueline Maillan à Florence Foresti, ou de Guy Bedos à Gad Elmaleh, le rire et l’humour sont des marqueurs incontestables de l’identité française contemporaine. De quoi rit-on ? Qu’est-ce qui fait la spécificité de l’humour français ? En quoi le rire en dit-il davantage sur le pays que bien des débats stériles ? C’est ce que ce film explore en confrontant les Français d’aujourd’hui à leur humour national tel qu’il évolue depuis les débuts de la Ve République.

Un demi-siècle qui correspond à des mutations profondes de la société. Thème par thème, ce documentaire montre comment, de De Gaulle à Sarkozy, le rire a accompagné ou précédé ces bouleversements. Des humoristes décryptent, en parallèle et de façon légère, ces différents visages de l’identité française du rire.

Gardes à vue à l’hôpital

Fabrice, champion trapéziste

A Paris, les urgences médico-judiciaires (UMJ) de l’Hôtel-Dieu constituent un service unique en France, où la médecine, la justice et la police cohabitent pour servir l’intérêt général et assurer au mieux le bon fonctionnement de l’institution. Au premier étage, dans la salle Cusco, les praticiens accueillent des victimes et des prévenus placés en garde à vue. Ils agissent sur réquisition du procureur et se trouvent régulièrement confrontés aux policiers et aux avocats. Face aux rouages d’une justice qui se déroule parfois dans l’urgence, la compassion des médecins tranche souvent avec la rigueur d’un juge ou avec l’opiniâtreté du policier investi dans son enquête. Le film trace les contours d’un incroyable carrefour de vies, où les intérêts de chacun divergent. L’histoire est racontée du point de vue de ces médecins qui sont au service de la justice, sans jamais contrevenir au serment d’Hippocrate.

Fabrice Champion, un voltigeur de la compagnie des Arts Sauts, internationalement reconnue et primée, est devenu tétraplégique à la suite d’un accident qui a brisé sa colonne vertébrale, mais pas sa volonté. Bien décidé à se battre contre le handicap, il suit périodiquement à Moscou un programme de rééducation mis au point par un médecin, lui-même ancien artiste de cirque. Ce combat éprouvant ne lui a pas fait oublier sa passion pour le trapèze. Depuis octobre 2010, il enseigne l’acrobatie dans les deux centres nationaux des arts du cirque. Il passe ses journées avec les jeunes artistes de demain, que sa vitalité ne cesse d’impressionner. Rencontre avec un jeune homme qui ne s’avoue jamais vaincu.

Panama -Fort-de-France Autopsie d’un crash

Le 16 août 2005, un avion de la compagnie colombienne West Caribbean Airways reliant le Panama à Fort-de-France s’écrase dans les montagnes du Venezuela. C’est la plus grande catastrophe aérienne qui ait frappé la France : 152 passagers martiniquais et les six membres de l’équipage y ont perdu la vie. Le président Jacques Chirac décide d’ériger le drame au rang de deuil national. Une première pour une catastrophe aérienne. Après plus de trois ans d’une attente interminable pour les familles des victimes, l’enquête arrive à son terme et le dossier doit être remis entre les mains de la justice. La vérité sur les circonstances exactes du drame demeure à ce jour encore très confidentielle et confinée au milieu des enquêteurs. Ce film, mêlant témoignages et scènes de reconstitution, se propose de révéler l’incroyable scénario qui a conduit à cette catastrophe.

Bandes à part La question des bandes demeure d’actualité. Des affrontements particulièrement violents et des incidents débordant parfois au sein des établissements scolaires se succèdent entre les cités d’Evry, Grigny, Gagny ou Villiers-le-Bel. Le phénomène, qui s’est amplifié à la fin de l’année 2008, touche également la capitale. Selon le ministère de l’Intérieur, la France compte aujourd’hui 222 bandes, dont 79 % en région parisienne. Quelle est donc cette jeunesse qui se rassemble et fait peur ? Qu’est-ce qu’une bande aujourd’hui ? Les bandes rivales existent-elles vraiment ?

Mes questions sur... Dans cette collection documentaire, Serge Moati remet en question ses propres préjugés et certitudes. Pour en finir avec les clichés sur des sujets qui touchent l’ensemble de la société, il s’immisce dans un milieu ou une communauté qui lui sont étrangers. Sans parti pris ni arrière-pensée. Entre interviews, rencontres et reportages, Serge Moati déambule au gré de ses interrogations et lance de nouveaux débats. Dans ses prochains films, il interpelle les téléspectateurs sur deux thèmes majeurs : la psychiatrie en prison et le troisième sexe.

Comment a-t-on réussi à les répertorier et sur quels critères ? Qu’est-ce qui pousse les adolescents à s’y intégrer ? Dans un contexte social et politique surmédiatisé, ce documentaire propose une enquête au sein de ces groupes de jeunes et analyse les rapports qu’ils entretiennent avec leur environnement.

Autisme, l’espoir

Ce film retrace l’histoire d’une transformation : celle d’Aymeric, diagnostiqué autiste sévère à l’âge de 3 ans et qui, aujourd’hui, à 9 ans, est scolarisé en CE2. Au travers du portrait du petit garçon, dont on observe l’évolution spectaculaire grâce à cinq années d’archives filmées, la réalisatrice Natacha Calastrémé met en exergue les différentes thérapies comportementales, souvent encore méconnues, qui permettent aujourd’hui d’aider ces enfants à s’exprimer, à communiquer, à apprendre à lire et à écrire. Un formidable espoir pour tous ceux que l’autisme touche.

Chaque film est consacré à une affaire. De l’ouverture du procès jusqu’au verdict, en passant par le rappel des faits, les témoignages ou encore les plaidoiries et les réquisitoires, il suit l’exacte chronologie de l’audience judiciaire, dévoilant la justice telle qu’elle se pratique et telle qu’elle est vécue. Chaque volet donne la parole à tous les protagonistes — avocats, magistrats, prévenus, parties civiles — et place le téléspectateur au cœur du jugement.

Chaque année en France, des crimes demeurent non élucidés, faute de preuves ou parce que l’enquête a pris une mauvaise direction. Des affaires que les familles refusent de voir classer. Le marché de la mort est un énorme business. Pourtant, on pourrait le croire en déclin avec l’augmentation des crémations et le recul de la mortalité. Mais les entreprises résistent bien et parfois innovent en surfant sur l’air du temps (développement durable, écologie…). Le secteur reste donc très rentable, générant de confortables profits. Cependant, il conserve une très mauvaise réputation. Plus les gens meurent, plus il y a d’argent à gagner. L’image du croque-

mort qui fait son beurre sur le malheur des autres est encore bien présente dans la tête des gens. Ce film se propose de décrypter le marché des pompes funèbres qui, par sa nature, ne ressemble à aucun autre.

Le Peuple des ordures

Miroir de la santé d’une économie nationale, le secteur de l’automobile est aussi celui de l’évolution des conditions de travail et de vie des ouvriers. En France, PSA Sochaux est l’un des derniers emblèmes de cette France ouvrière. L’usine compte aujourd’hui 12 500 salariés contre 40 000 en 1979. L’activité actuelle tourne principalement autour du montage. Le reste est sous-traité, alors qu’il y a encore une vingtaine d’années les voitures y étaient fabriquées de A à Z. Ils ont entre trente et quarante ans d’usine et ont vu évoluer les méthodes de production, de management, d’embauche et leurs conditions de travail dans les dernières décennies. En donnant la parole à ces ouvriers et en mettant en perspective celle de la direction de PSA, le film retrace l’évolution des modes de production et leur incidence dans les ateliers.

Selon les estimations, plusieurs millions de personnes dans le monde vivent au milieu des ordures. La moitié est des enfants. Ils sont les symptômes visibles d’une crise sociale grave, abyssale… Pour dresser ce triste constat, le film mène une enquête dans trois pays : l’Inde, où l’industrialisation galopante a totalement évacué la question du traitement des détritus ; le Ghana, devenu une poubelle pour les déchets électroniques de l’Occident, et le Nicaragua, où la mobilisation des habitants a obligé les autorités à agir. En suivant longuement plusieurs familles, ce documentaire propose une immersion dans le quotidien du « peuple des ordures ».

Services publics, une question de métier Cette collection propose une enquête sur trois services publics dans la tourmente : la santé, la police et l’école. Aujourd’hui, soigner, ce n’est plus seulement combattre la maladie : les patients veulent être informés et considérés. Le métier de gardien de la paix a changé lui aussi. L’obsession du chiffre s’est peu à peu faite au détriment de l’action durable sur le terrain. Dans les écoles, à l’heure où la compétitivité s’intensifie, enseigner dans les petites classes pose une nouvelle question : comment faire pour que tous les élèves apprennent à apprendre ? Une gigantesque bataille planétaire est en train de se dérouler. L’enjeu : les millions d’hectares de terres fertiles de la planète. Ces surfaces appartiennent souvent à des pays en voie de développement qui ne voient dans la vente ou la location de leurs terres rien d’autre qu’une perspective d’argent facile. Les acquéreurs sont des Etats en quête de superficies cultivables disponibles pour assurer leur sécurité alimentaire. Leurs demandes enflamment un marché dont s’est déjà emparé le monde de la spéculation. Mais la terre n’est pas un bien comme un autre. Souvent nourricière, parfois sacrée, toujours indispensable à la vie de milliards de paysans à travers le monde, elle occupe dans notre histoire une place singulière. Orange douce ou amère ? France Télécom : le temps de l’après…

L’Or de la discorde En un an, le cours de l’once d’or a bondi de 30 %. Mais si la demande d’or augmente, l’offre, elle, est très faible. En effet, tous les grands gisements aurifères s’épuisent. Dans la province indonésienne de Sulawesi du Nord, à trente kilomètres de la capitale Manado, se trouve une mine d’or sur le point d’être exploitée. La résistance s’organise parmi les villageois pour contrer cette « nouvelle ruée vers l’or » qui va bouleverser leur vie sans leur apporter le moindre bénéfice et menace aussi directement la biodiversité de ce lieu unique, situé au cœur de l’un des parcs nationaux marins les plus spectaculaires au monde. Ce film fait découvrir comment, par effet papillon, la fièvre de l’or à la Bourse peut avoir des répercussions à l’autre bout du monde et ainsi influer sur le quotidien des habitants des pays du Sud.

L’accumulation des suicides chez France Télécom a bouleversé les Français. Elle a souligné l’inhumanité des méthodes de management appliquées dans l’ex-entreprise publique pour l’adapter aux contraintes de la productivité et ainsi obtenir les résultats financiers exigés par ses actionnaires. Soucieuse de son image à la veille de sa mutation en « Orange », qui interviendra le 1er janvier 2011, France Télécom vient de remanier son équipe dirigeante et de promettre une meilleure prise en compte du facteur humain. Mais alors que le travail est partout soumis à la priorité du profit, une grande entreprise peut-elle redonner toute sa place à l’humain sans remise en cause de sa propre existence ?

En 1928, le Hollandais Henri Deterding, patron de la Royal Dutch Shell, réunit dans son château d’Achnacarry les présidents des six compagnies pétrolières : Standard Oil of New Jersey, Texaco, Anglo-Persian Oil Company, Gulf, Chevron et Mobil. Afin d’exploiter « fraternellement et le plus profitablement » les réserves mondiales de pétrole, les convives concluent alors l’accord d’Achnacarry, dit aussi « des sept sœurs ». Il va sceller la prospérité de leurs sociétés. Soixante-dix ans plus tard, ces sept compagnies figurent toujours parmi les dix plus puissantes... Mêlant interviews de spécialistes, images d’aujourd’hui, archives et reconstitutions, cette série montre comment le contrôle du pétrole a modelé les relations entre les Etats et nourri de multiples conflits.

Pas un ordinateur, pas un fil électrique, pas un composant électronique sans cuivre. La bataille pour son contrôle est gagnée par Glencore, leader du commerce de matières premières. En Zambie, au cœur de la « copperbelt », on comprend comment et avec quels appuis la multinationale a fait main basse sur le minerai et contribué à la destruction de l’environnement par les pluies acides et des pollutions multiples. Mais Glencore est dans le collimateur du juge Eva Joly et d’une dizaine d’ONG. Pillage des ressources, méthodes mafieuses, prêts de la Banque européenne d’investissement… Les mineurs de Zambie et les activistes européens sauront-ils faire plier le géant mondial, bien à l’abri dans son paradis fiscal, Zoug, le petit canton suisse où tout se trame ?

A l’heure où le monde s’interroge sur les réponses à apporter aux changements climatiques, les autorités brésiliennes annoncent une réduction de 45 % du processus de déforestation de la forêt amazonienne. C’est l’objectif le plus audacieux de ces vingt dernières années et le résultat des nouvelles politiques de contrôle et de surveillance mises en place depuis deux ans par le gouvernement. Il se prépare, ces temps-ci, une petite révolution en bord de Seine. Le musée du Louvre s’apprête à accueillir, pour la première fois en plus d’un siècle, un nouveau département : celui des Arts de l’Islam. Ainsi, treize siècles d’histoire, trois continents et quelques milliers d’œuvres entreront bientôt au cœur du plus grand musée du monde. Pour l’occasion, il faudra recouvrir une cour, construire un bâtiment, repenser la circulation des visiteurs... Au milieu du tourbillon que représente un tel chantier, le film s’attache au « poste de pilotage » auprès des conservateurs : là où tous les problèmes convergent et où la plupart des décisions se prennent. Tout en proposant un voyage à travers une civilisation majeure, tolérante, curieuse, érudite et terriblement méconnue.

L’Occupation sans relâche

C’était une autre époque : pas de service de la communication ou de Groupe de sécurité de la présidence de la République (GSPR) avec portables et oreillettes, voire de tireurs d’élite sur les toits, comme aujourd’hui. Charles de Gaulle régnait seul au palais de l’Elysée entouré de ses quatre gardes du corps — choisis par André Malraux ! — chargés de sa sécurité à Paris, mais surtout lors de ses déplacements. Ce film propose de revivre avec eux dix ans au côté de Charles de Gaulle à la tête de l’Etat français. Un regard intime au travers des témoignages et des archives des deux « gorilles » survivants, Roger Tessier et René Auvray, ainsi que ceux des journalistes et photographes qui devaient négocier avec eux les autorisations lors de chaque événement.

Quel fut le comportement des artistes français les plus connus — Maurice Chevalier, Sacha Guitry, Charles Trenet, Danielle Darrieux… — sous l’Occupation ? Le film restitue une image complexe et kaléidoscopique où l’on découvre que la plupart des acteurs de la vie culturelle de l’époque sont à l’image des Français : ni plus ni moins de collaborateurs, ni plus ni moins de résistants. Le documentaire s’appuie sur des recherches historiques récentes (La Vie culturelle sous Vichy, de Jean-Pierre Rioux notamment). Le film où la « petite histoire » rejoint « la grande » montre que, en ces temps difficiles, les Français se bousculaient aux portes des théâtres, des music-halls et des cinémas. A base de documents sombres, drôles, tragiques ou romanesques, il explore la complexité humaine où la frivolité côtoie la gravité.

Le Serment des ancêtres

Après le séisme en Haïti, une équipe de pompiers français retrouve sous les décombres du palais présidentiel de la capitale le tableau Le Serment des ancêtres. Cette œuvre représente la rencontre historique, en novembre 1802, du général noir Jean-Jacques Dessalines avec le chef des mulâtres de Saint-Domingue, Alexandre Pétion. Les deux hommes scellent une alliance pour chasser les troupes françaises de l’île. Peint en 1822 par le métis Guillaume Guillon-Lethière, le tableau est devenu un symbole de l’indépendance de Haïti. Le Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France est chargé de restaurer le tableau abîmé. A travers sa restauration, le film revient ainsi sur l’histoire douloureuse des relations franco-haïtiennes. Il s’intéresse aussi à la place que peut tenir la culture dans la reconstruction du pays, en allant à la rencontre des écrivains : Dany Laferrière, Frankétienne…

Portrait d’un cinéaste. Passionné par les rapports sociaux, Sautet sera toujours le cinéaste de la cinquantaine, incarné à l’écran par ses doubles masculins, Michel Piccoli et Yves Montand, réunis dans ce film.

L’Afro-Américain JeanMichel Basquiat (1960-1988) a débuté à New York comme graffeur. Pionnier de l’art contemporain, ce héros romantique apportera un renouveau au cœur d’une société en perte de vitesse, symbole du passage de témoin entre deux époques, et ouvrira une porte vers l’Afrique et le reste de la planète. Sa collaboration étroite avec Andy Warhol

participera à cette relecture de l’ancien monde. En se servant de tous les moyens d’expression, de toutes les cultures, pour enfanter une autre approche, sa démarche dépasse l’axe de la pensée dominante. Le film s’appuie également sur le témoignage de nombreux proches. Une exposition consacrée à Jean-Michel Basquiat se tiendra au musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris du 15 octobre 2010 au 30 janvier 2011.

Piet Mondrian Ce film retrace la vie et l’œuvre de Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), peintre néerlandais et pionnier de l’abstraction pure, qui a largement influencé l’art du XXe siècle. Grande figure de l’avant-garde, Mondrian, d’abord marqué par le mouvement cubiste, invente un langage universel à partir de formes inédites et de couleurs primaires. Son œuvre singulière est restée assez mal comprise, bien que son esthétique géométrique et colorée ait largement été diffusée, particulièrement dans la mode (Yves Saint Laurent) ou la publicité (L’Oréal). Retracer sa trajectoire artistique et humaine, notamment à travers ses différentes phases — figuration, expressionnisme, fauvisme, pointillisme, cubisme — permet de comprendre pourquoi et comment ces influences ont mené Mondrian à l’abstraction géométrique, si caractéristique de son style.

Claude Monet à Giverny, la Maison d’Alice

Pour les enfants du monde entier, les jouets sont les outils du rêve et de l’éveil, essentiels à leur développement et à leur épanouissement. Tout au long du XXe siècle, on retrouve de grands classiques, tels que les jeux de cour de récréation (billes, marelle, corde à sauter…), les soldats, les poupées ou les petites voitures. Mais, régulièrement, de nouveaux jouets se distinguent et marquent leur époque : Meccano, Lego, Dinky et Corgi Toys, Télécran, Barbie, G.I. Joe, Playmobil et autres Transformers sont devenus de véritables références de la culture populaire. A la fois ludique et nostalgique, ce film raconte l’aventure de ces « jouets cultes », passionnante tant pour le récit de leur création — une idée forte, combinée à une innovation technique et une démarche industrielle originale — que pour leur capacité à « capter » leur époque.

De 1883 à sa mort en 1926, Claude Monet a vécu à Giverny avec Alice, sa seconde femme. Exactement la moitié de sa vie. Dans sa maison de Normandie, il développe une aventure picturale inédite : la pratique de la série, notamment à travers les « Meules », les « Peupliers », les « Cathédrales » et enfin les « Nymphéas », qui occupa l’artiste quelque vingt-cinq ans. A Giverny, Monet fonde aussi une nouvelle famille. Veuf, deux enfants, il s’y installe avec Alice Hoschedé — six enfants —, qu’il épouse en 1892. A l’écart des rumeurs de la capitale, il a trouvé ses marques et porté la peinture au plus haut d’une aventure prospective qui devait éclairer le XXe siècle. Avec la voix de Marie-Christine Barrault qui incarne Alice, le film réalisé par son arrière-petit-fils s’appuie sur la correspondance de son aïeule avec sa fille et relate la vie de cette maisonnée organisée autour du quotidien de l’artiste. 52 min. Vigneron à Chinon, dans la Loire, Nicolas veut élaborer un vin haut de gamme et le vendre dans le monde entier. Anne est pâtissière à Porto-Vecchio, en Corse, et fabrique des macarons. Elle aimerait ouvrir sa boutique. Cyrille est producteur de truffes, en Bourgogne, et rêve d’augmenter sa production. Lucie et Cécile sont agricultrices dans les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Dans l’Amérique conservatrice des années 1950, entre guerre froide, maccarthysme et ségrégation raciale, un petit groupe de poètes dont la figure emblématique s’appelle Jack Kerouac donne naissance à un formidable mouvement qui va profondément bouleverser la culture et la société américaine : la beat generation. Mais comment a-t-elle, de Jack Kerouac à Bob Dylan en passant par les beatniks, les hippies, la mode vestimentaire et les mœurs, marqué la société française et ses principaux acteurs ? Comment a-t-elle fini par influencer la jeunesse française qui s’est retrouvée dans les rues en mai 68 ? Et quel héritage la beat generation nous a-t-elle laissé aujourd’hui ? C’est l’histoire que nous raconte ce film porté par de grands témoins : Karl Lagerfeld, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Jérôme Savary, Elisabeth Guigou, Agnès Varda...

Selon le célébrissime Docteur Knock, « les gens bien portants sont des malades qui s’ignorent ». Nous avons tous quelque chose qui cloche de temps à autre : la rate qui se dilate, le foie qui n’est pas droit... Et pourtant, un film comique ou un sketch nous permettent de rire des épreuves les plus déplaisantes. Tourner en dérision ce qui nous handicape dans la vie, c’est le parti pris de certains artistes, parfois taxés de méchanceté. N’est-ce pas au contraire le moyen de positiver une situation qu’on nomme « tragédie » un peu trop souvent ? Ce documentaire, léger et divertissant, est composé d’extraits comiques et d’interviews de personnalités concernées. Tout comme un bon vaccin, le rire est un médicament qui s’inspire de la maladie !

Les Tribulations du trésor de Priam Le musée Pouchkine, à Moscou, renferme le mythique « trésor de Troie », retrouvé par Heinrich Schliemann en 1874, après des siècles de disparition... Or, l’exposition en Russie de cette œuvre d’art antique est contestée. Car Schliemann avait vendu le « trésor » au musée de Berlin. En 1993, Boris Eltsine avoua que l’Armée rouge, à la fin de la guerre, avait volé ces pièces, qui resteront cachées pendant cinquante ans. Immédiatement, l’Allemagne réclame le retour de la collection à Berlin. Mais un autre propriétaire se fait connaître : la Turquie, au motif que Schliemann avait fait sortir ces pièces illégalement de l’Empire ottoman ; puis les Grecs, en tant que descendants et donc héritiers des Troyens. Le 22 novembre 1982, Oliver Stone achève l’écriture de Scarface, porté à l’écran un an plus tard par Brian De Palma. Deux générations d’adolescents ont voué un culte à Tony Montana, interprété par Al Pacino. Dans les banlieues, aucun film n’a déclenché autant de ferveur. Un phénomène très ancré dans la « culture » des cités. Aujourd’hui, Scarface est aussi un prisme qui permet de mieux comprendre les jeunes générations des banlieues et le regard qu’elles portent sur la société française. Alors que le cliché immigration-violence reste très présent dans l’inconscient collectif, ce film propose de comprendre pourquoi et comment Tony Montana, l’anti-héros immigré, est devenu le modèle référent ambigu d’un pan entier de notre société, à travers les témoignages de Jamel, Bertrand Tavernier, Abdel Raouf Dafri…

Des cheveux pour montrer qu’on est dans le vent, pour faire naître une certaine confusion des genres entre hommes et femmes, pour dire sa révolte ou pour lancer des révolutions, pour exprimer ce que l’on souhaite représenter, une mode, une position sociale : depuis une cinquantaine d’années, les cheveux ont pris la parole et le pouvoir. Ce documentaire retranscrit la personnalité de cette femme qui a su marquer son époque tel un caméléon dans une jungle et transgresser les règles d’un monde régi par l’apparence. Baptisée « le mannequin qui parle », elle a séduit au-delà du monde de la mode, par son naturel, son humour et son piquant. Jean-Jacques Orgeval et Larry Newitt sont les géologues chargés de mesurer la position exacte du pôle Nord magnétique, vers lequel pointent toutes les boussoles du monde. En trente ans, ce dernier s’est déplacé de près de 2 000 kilomètres ! Au cours d’une mission sur la banquise, les chercheurs ont découvert que sa vitesse de déplacement s’était accélérée de façon spectaculaire. Pourquoi le pôle bouge-t-il si vite ? Grâce au paléomagnétisme, on sait que le pôle magnétique s’inverse de façon cyclique, en moyenne tous les 250 000 ans. Mais le dernier retournement remonte à 780 000 ans… Sommes-nous à la veille de ce grand événement de l’inversion des pôles ? Quelles seraient alors les conséquences pour l’homme ? Cette enquête nous conduit au pôle Nord, en France, au Danemark et au Canada. De nombreux scientifiques travaillant sur le sujet apportent leur éclairage.

Avec les techniques de biométrie qui permettent d’observer, de mesurer, de recueillir, d’analyser, de comparer, c’est le corps humain tout entier qui devient notre pièce d’identité, un « corps identité ». Quelles sont ces données, que nous livrons parfois à notre insu ? Quelles sont ces techniques qui permettent de les capter ? Sont-elles vraiment fiables ? Notre corps « transparent », ainsi scruté à tout instant, est-il encore celui d’un

Le QI : histoire d’une imposture Que mesure réellement le QI ? Qui l’a inventé ? Pourquoi et comment a-t-il été détourné de son objet ? Ces deux lettres sont toutes-puissantes et, quel que soit le pays où l’on se trouve, personne n’y échappe. Elles surfent sur les angoisses des gens et dissimulent également des idéologies aux relents inquiétants. Ceux qui veulent faire croire que le QI est inné cherchent avant tout à prouver que les pauvres sont « génétiquement pauvres » et que, dès la naissance, « tout est joué ». Il y a quinze ans, le Congrès américain, à majorité républicaine, coupait dans les budgets sociaux en vertu d’études

scientifiques sur le caractère inné de la pauvreté. Aujourd’hui, le mystère de l’intelligence humaine revient sur le devant de la scène à cause des partisans de la course aux gènes de « la violence » ou de « l’homosexualité » qui détermineraient le futur de chaque individu. Il y a soixante-cinq millions d’années, les dinosaures ovipares dominaient déjà la planète depuis plus de 100 millions d’années. Les mammifères étaient réduits à se faire tout petits. Mais un jour, une météorite change la donne : l’onde de choc laisse le champ à une lutte à trois entre reptiles, oiseaux et mammifères. Ces derniers s’émancipent et évoluent ; placentaires, moins spécialisés que leurs concurrents, ils savent s’adapter à tous les environnements. Et de leur rang émergera l’homme… Cette adaptation en 2 x 52 minutes d’une production de la NHK parcourt le monde à la recherche des traces de cette lutte et la raconte grâce à des reconstitutions en animation CGI. 2 x 52 min. Aujourd’hui, l’Arctique est une étendue gelée, presque déserte. Il y a soixante-dix millions d’années, c’était un tout autre endroit, avec une végétation luxuriante et des mois d’été beaucoup plus chauds. De nombreuses espèces de dinosaures y vivaient. Quand le soleil commence à décliner, les grands troupeaux d’Edmontosaurus comprennent qu’un long hiver approche. Pour survivre, ils décident de parcourir des milliers de kilomètres à la recherche de chaleur et de nourriture. Ce film nous fait revivre l’épopée d’un jeune Edmontosaurus au cours de sa première migration. Lhamo a été recueillie dans le plus grand monastère pour femmes bouddhistes en Himalaya. En la plaçant dans le couvent de Kopan, le seul au monde où les nonnes reçoivent les mêmes enseignements que les moines pour prétendre au titre suprême de docteur en philosophie, son père et sa

(Saison 2) Victoria, Marie-Ange, Eve, Josiane, Cathy, Esther et Laura sont de retour, toujours aussi indépendantes, dominantes et plus que jamais infidèles… Alors que la sécheresse domine la savane, Laura la lionne, Victoria la guéparde, Esther l’éléphante et toutes les autres sont mises à rude épreuve. Découvert en Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée par l’explorateur britannique A. S. Meek en 1906, l’ornithoptère Alexandra est le plus grand papillon de la planète. Son espace d’origine constitue son seul et unique biotope, or tout le monde semble vouloir se l’arracher. Aujourd’hui, en effet, 70 % de son territoire a été déboisé. L’Alexandra se trouve piégé au centre des intérêts des compagnies forestières, qui pressent les tribus de leur céder ces terres, et des exploitants d’huile de palme, désireux d’étendre leurs cultures. A la tête du PNGOPRA, un centre de recherche scientifique, David Mitchell part analyser le comportement et le mode de vie du papillon afin d’assurer un programme de protection efficace.

Sous le signe de la tortue En un siècle, les exigences économiques de l’homme ont modifié de façon irréversible les écosystèmes de la planète. La tortue marine représente à elle seule l’ampleur du désastre annoncé. Le réchauffement des océans entraîne une diminution des stocks de son alimentation à base de corail, d’algues et de méduses ; les plages sur lesquelles elle pond ses œufs disparaissent sous l’effet de l’augmentation du niveau de la mer ; dans quelques décennies, elle aura de plus en plus de difficultés à se nourrir et se reproduire. A cette situation alarmante s’ajoute le

problème du braconnage et de la pêche illégale. Dans les pays de la zone sud-ouest de l’océan Indien (Réunion, Afrique du Sud, Comores, Seychelles et Madagascar), des habitants se mobilisent pour sauver les tortues. Sous la forme d’un road-movie, ce documentaire révèle ces nombreuses initiatives locales, porteuses d’espoir.

une véritable enquête pour traquer les origines d’un groupe d’animaux bien distinct, dans une région précise du monde, afin de nous dévoiler les mystères de l’évolution.

Les Maîtres des insectes Pour les Indiens Kayapos du Brésil, le projet de construction du barrage Belo Monte, au cœur de l’Amazonie, est perçu comme une déclaration de guerre. Les Kayapos se préparent à une nouvelle rencontre avec les responsables de la construction du barrage. Quelques mois plus tôt, une réunion similaire avait tourné à la confrontation. Seuls les hommes les plus valeureux feront donc le voyage pour y participer. C’est le moment pour les anciens de demander aux jeunes hommes du village de rassembler leurs forces et de se préparer au combat contre « ceux qui détruisent la forêt ». S’ils veulent accompagner les guerriers, les novices devront au préalable aller chercher la « force véritable » au fond de la forêt. Cette force, c’est celle d’Amyu, la guêpe tueuse. Petit renard polaire, grosse chaleur

Elles sont animales ou végétales, prolifèrent de manière opportuniste hors de leur milieu naturel et modifient irrémédiablement les écosystèmes qu’elles colonisent. Cette série a pour objectif de porter un regard global et de faire la lumière sur le phénomène des espèces invasives, qui s’est considérablement accru avec la mondialisation. Scientifiques, politiques, militants associatifs, simples citoyens, acteurs du monde économique ou de la santé, dressent un panorama de la situation, tout en présentant leurs méthodes de travail. Aussi crucial que celui du réchauffement climatique, ce problème est paradoxalement très peu porté à la connaissance du grand public.

Depuis 400 000 ans, le renard polaire vit dans les régions arctiques de l’hémisphère Nord. Ce champion de l’adaptation est capable de supporter le manque de nourriture et des températures pouvant descendre jusqu’à - 70 °C. Mais le réchauffement climatique permet désormais à son cousin du Sud, le renard roux, d’envahir son territoire. Plus gros et plus vorace, il mange ses proies, tue ses jeunes et occupe ses terriers. Paradoxe : le renard polaire aurait été autrefois un renard roux qui se serait adapté au froid au fil des millénaires ! Tourné en Islande, dans le Grand Nord canadien et en France (Bourgogne), ce film met en images le combat quotidien de ce petit animal pour survivre dans un environnement qui change trop vite.

J’irai dormir… Antoine de Maximy pourrait ressembler à n’importe quel routard s’il n’avait pas trois caméras en permanence sur lui. France 5 met à l’honneur le singulier globe-trotteur en diffusant le long-métrage J’irai dormir à Hollywood. De New York à Miami, en passant par La Nouvelle-Orléans ou encore Las Vegas, l’infatigable voyageur filmeur prend la route à pied, en stop, en taxi, en bus, à vélo et même en corbillard ! Aux quatre coins du monde, des milliers de personnes s’aventurent sur des routes terrestres ou fluviales périlleuses. Parce que ces voies représentent l’unique accès à un village ou le point névralgique entre deux villes commerçantes, les chauffeurs doivent braver tous les dangers : coulées de boue, météo capricieuse, falaises vertigineuses… A coups d’images saisissantes, cette série, qui s’étoffe de quatre épisodes inédits, rend compte de l’enfer de ces pistes. Rendez-vous sur le fleuve Congo où, chaque année, des centaines de passagers périssent ; à Java où un volcan, cracheur de soufre, fait pourtant vivre de nombreuses familles ; sur l’île de Luzon, aux Philippines, au cœur de la « Cordillera Valley », véritable tronçon de la mort entre la vallée et les montagnes de Sagada ; enfin, au Panama, sur la route du Darien, où les paseros, porteurs d’hommes, restent le seul moyen de transport…

En 1785, le comte de La Pérouse est chargé par Louis XVI de mener une prestigieuse expédition maritime autour du monde. Après trois ans de navigation, La Boussole et L’Astrolabe, les deux frégates de l’opération, disparaissent dans le Pacifique Sud. En 1999, à l’encontre de toutes les théories avancées jusqu’alors par les historiens, les archéologues mettent au jour sur l’île de Vanikoro les traces d’un camp de survivants. En 2009, une nouvelle campagne de fouilles est lancée. Pour l’Association Salomon et Alain Conan, c’est la huitième en trente années de recherches, et, comme l’exige l’accord passé avec les autorités des îles Salomon, ils n’ont cette fois encore que vingt-huit jours pour aboutir ! Les enjeux de cette dernière expédition ? Tenter par tous les moyens de trouver le moindre indice et la moindre trace prouvant le passage des Français dans l’île.

Les Momies perdues de Papouasie

Jeune Bédouin de 13 ans, Tamer est brillant, drôle et très attaché à son chameau. Il est aussi fan de télévision, de jeux vidéo, de danse et de « rap-littérature ». Il rêve de devenir astronaute et de faire entrer la culture moderne dans l’univers bédouin. Ange Line, quant à elle, est une ado de 12 ans, vive et débrouillarde, qui habite en Arctique. Elle a une passion pour les rennes et passe l’été à préparer la cérémonie avec sa tribu : les Sami. Adepte des films d’horreur et de heavy metal, elle souhaite devenir coiffeuse styliste. Ces deux adolescents qu’a priori tout sépare vont se rencontrer sur Facebook. A travers leurs regards se révèlent les dilemmes de deux peuples souvent tiraillés, attachés aux traditions et fascinés par le monde moderne.

Au cœur de la jungle de Papouasie-NouvelleGuinée, la tribu des Angas possède une collection de momies étranges et fascinantes, uniques en leur genre. L’arrivée des missionnaires, au milieu du XXe siècle, a rendu ces pratiques de momification interdites : les rites sont devenus confidentiels, les momies ont été cachées. Ullah Lohman, jeune photographe allemande, a partagé le quotidien des Angas de nombreuses années. Elle connaît leur secret et s’est fixé pour mission de préserver ces trésors aujourd’hui fragilisés. Comprendre leur mystère et leur extraordinaire longévité, tel est l’objectif d’un laboratoire scientifique monté sur place et doté d’une technologie de pointe.

des autres animaux reste notre capacité à résoudre nos problèmes en nous entraidant et en communiquant les uns avec les autres. Terre des hommes nous emmène dans les régions les plus inhospitalières du monde et nous montre comment les hommes ont pu s’y adapter.

Lamalera, l’utime combat

Chez les Toubou, peuple nomade subsaharien, hommes et femmes ont des rôles clairement définis. Aux hommes, le troupeau de chameaux ; aux femmes, les enfants, la cuisine ou l’élevage des petits animaux. Mais toujours sous la houlette de leur mari… Seule exception : la saison des dattes, unique moment de répit où elles peuvent enfin sortir de leur carcan ancestral et échapper à l’emprise des hommes. Au marché de Nguigmi, situé à la frontière du Tchad et du Niger, elles seules ont la responsabilité de la récolte, du transport et de la vente de ces fruits. Elles partent ainsi chaque été durant quatre mois et parcourent 1 500 kilomètres. Symbole d’indépendance, cette activité rend fierté et confiance à toutes ces femmes. Mais pour Domagali, Hanne, Wazouma ou Eta, elle prend une signification bien différente…

Sur une île perdue à l’est de l’archipel indonésien, le village de Lamalera survit depuis des siècles grâce à la chasse à la baleine au harpon. Chaque matin, les hommes poussent à l’eau de lourdes embarcations utilisées pour poursuivre les cétacés, les « tenas ». Depuis deux ans, la plupart des tenas sont munis de petits moteurs hors-bord. Cette avancée technique permet aux habitants de Lamalera d’améliorer considérablement leurs conditions de vie et de vendre beaucoup plus de viande qu’autrefois sur les marchés. Les anciens craignent que les organisations de protection de la vie marine pointent du doigt cette évolution de leur méthode de pêche. Mais si l’on veut réussir à protéger la vie marine locale, ne faudrait-il pas commencer par élever le niveau de vie des harponneurs de baleines ?

Les Travailleurs du diable

Les mines d’argent de Potosi, ville située dans l’une des régions les plus pauvres de Bolivie, tuent sans discontinuer depuis plus de quatre siècles. A plus de 4 000 mètres d’altitude, des mineurs s’engouffrent chaque jour dans les profondeurs de la montagne, avec l’espoir de faire fortune. Asphyxiés à petit feu par la poussière et menacés en permanence par le risque d’éboulement, ils creusent la roche la peur au ventre, dans une atmosphère harassante et des conditions de travail infernales... Mais nul ne s’y aventure sans l’autorisation du diable El Tio, qui règne sur les entrailles de la terre et détient le secret des filons que tous ces mineurs recherchent fièvreusement au péril de leur vie. © Serge Guiraud / Anako Productions

L’Île

Les Indiens Yawalapiti du Xingu constituent l’une des tribus les plus étonnantes d’Amazonie brésilienne. Cette communauté autochtone est aujourd’hui désireuse de se réapproprier son image et de participer à la sauvegarde de sa culture. Elle s’est ainsi mobilisée autour de ses anciens pour l’écriture et le tournage d’un documentaire consacré au rite fondateur du Kuarup. Ce rituel funéraire s’étend depuis la mort d’un membre important de la communauté jusqu’à sa veillée finale qui voit revenir la joie du soleil. Voici le premier documentaire intégralement réalisé par les Indiens Yawalapiti.

Montrer les problématiques Nord-Sud et les enjeux du développement durable, tel est le propos de cette série. Entrepreneur social de renommée internationale, Tristan Lecomte, 36 ans, est un pionnier du commerce équitable en France. Depuis quinze ans, il parcourt le monde, développe des réseaux d’échanges avec des organisations de petits producteurs, tout en mettant son savoir-faire et son expérience à leur service. Chaque film traite d’un produit exemplaire des déséquilibres NordSud, comme le riz, le sucre, le cacao... Partant d’un des points chauds de la planète, là où les inégalités sont les plus criantes, Tristan mène l’enquête. D’un continent à l’autre, il met en lumière les dysfonctionnements du système des échanges mondialisés et s’attache à montrer que d’autres voies plus équilibrées peuvent servir de modèle.

Au large des Shetland, Foula, l’île écossaise la plus isolée du Royaume-Uni, tente d’échapper au destin tragique de Saint-Kilda, évacué totalement en 1930. Ses vingt-six habitants survivent en s’adaptant à la fois aux rigueurs d’un autre âge et en innovant dans les domaines de l’économie solidaire et de l’écologie high-tech. Ce documentaire les filme dans leur quotidien, au rythme des saisons, et brosse le portrait d’un petit théâtre de l’extrême, mêlant l’expression subjective de la réalité de Foula et l’évocation poétique de l’histoire de Saint-Kilda.

editorial Documentaries are built into France 5’s DNA, so the schedule devoted 3,832 hours of programming to them in 2009. We achieve our aim of feeding viewers’ curiosity about the world by providing them with programmes that help them unravel the meaning of social trends, geopolitics and the major developments taking place in today’s world. Our extended programming will include a large number of landmark documentaries and will be celebrating African independence with an ambitious series of four 90-minute programmes entitled Africa(s), an alternative history of the twentieth century. This season’s programmes highlight issues ranging from student housing problems to France’s international image as a tourist destination via defensive monitoring of air space by the Air Force, the pros and cons of self-assembly houses, and legal and illegal transportation of animals at Roissy Airport. Filmed in a lively, up-beat style, the series tackles a wide range of topics chosen for their interest and relevance to viewers.

some can choose their jobs, others have to take what they can get; for some, work is fulfilling, for others soul-destroying. Today, the effects of globalization, financial crises and environmental disasters are prompting society to question the rewards work brings and the amount of space it takes up in our lives. Might we be at a historic turning-point? Domestic violence p20 (in development) Every two and a half days a woman dies at the hands of her spouse or partner in France. It is estimated that twenty per cent of all homicides committed each year are attributable to domestic violence. Women are more at risk of being attacked in their own households than in the street. In the face of this unacceptable scourge that affects all social categories, the French government has decided to step up the fight against violence perpetrated on women and make it a major national cause in 2010. There are concrete ways to prevent and curb this form of abuse. This film aims to provide an overview of the current situation by highlighting the difficulties involved in implementing the new measures against domestic violence, which have limitations and shortcomings but are proving effective in some cases.

The new detectives p20 The face of today’s detectives has changed. They are branching out from tracking down adulterous spouses into areas such as family conflicts and compensatory allowances. They even investigate insurance fraud, workplace theft and preventive employee surveillance. The new detectives are required to earn a degree from Assas, Paris University’s school of law and economics, and must be approved by the prefecture and checked by the Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence, which reports to the Interior Ministry. They might eventually be recognized as representatives of the law. This documentary follows two student detectives and two graduates with a little experience under their belts: Sophie and Stéphanie, who are taking courses in shadowing and in the psychology of fraudsters and looking forward to an internship in a detective firm, and Cédric and Guillaume, more seasoned investigators who are already working in the field. The reform of criminal justice for minors that should be passed by the French parliament in the near future will no doubt bear out this major turning point. Patients in custody p26 The medico-legal emergency department of the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Paris is the only such department in France, where medicine co-exists with the courts and the police for the sake of the public interest and to keep the hospital running properly. On the first floor, in the Cusco ward, physicians care for both victims and prisoners held in police custody, at the demand of the prosecutor. They are routinely confronted with police officers and lawyers. When they are faced with the urgency of the machinery of justice, their compassion often contrasts with the judge’s severity or the relentlessness of policemen absorbed in an investigation. This film outlines an incredible crossroads where individuals’ lives intersect and their interests diverge. Fabrice, the trapeze champion p26 Fabrice Champion, an acrobat who performed with the internationally renowned prize-winning company Les Arts Sauts, became quadriplegic when his spinal column was fractured in an accident. Determined to fight his disability, Fabrice travelled to Moscow periodically for a physiotherapy programme developed by a doctor who was himself a former circus artist. The ordeal did nothing to dim his love of the trapeze. Since October 2010, Fabrice has been teaching acrobatics in France’s two national centres for circus arts. Inquest into a plane crash: What really happened on the Panama-Martinique flight p28 On 16 August 2005, a plane owned by Colombia’s West Caribbean Airways crashed in the mountains of Venezuela whilst travelling from Panama to Martinique. The 152 passengers, all French nationals, and the six Colombian crew members all lost their lives. It was the highest death-toll France had ever experienced in an aviation accident. French President Jacques Chirac declared national mourning − the first time this had ever happened for an aeroplane crash.

Three years later − after a wait that seemed interminable to the victims’ families − the investigation is over and the case is in the hands of the legal system. Strict confidentiality has been maintained: as yet, only the investigators know the precise circumstances of the tragedy. Dolto’s way p31 Founded by Françoise Dolto in 1979, La Maison Verte (The Green House) offers a genuine alternative to current mental health policies, which tend either to stigmatize children’s behavioural problems or to treat them as medical conditions. Dolto’s Maison Verte is a day care facility where educators and psycho-analysts work with children under four and their parents or other carers to facilitate social development and prevent problems developing later on. The aim is for children to progress towards independence in the presence of people they feel safe with, prior to the separation that occurs when they start going to a crèche or nursery school. The film documents the everyday life of the Maison Verte as if it were a person, with the opening of the doors, the arrival of staff and children, the events that take place in the course of the day, laughter, tears and the relief of being allowed to say things. 52 min. And now psychotropic drugs for cats and dogs are all the rage. One laboratory has spotted a lucrative niche worth billions of dollars and is marketing medications manufactured specially for pets. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs and the like can calm aggressive behaviour, reduce separation anxiety, and alleviate obesity as well as mental decline due to old age. The dancing boys of Afghanistan p39 They call them bacha bereesh, literally “beardless boys”. They are boys as young as ten who have been picked up off the streets of Afghanistan, lured by promises of a new life. But the boys are chosen for their height and good looks and the men who promise to lift them out of poverty force them to dance and sing for men, often dressed up as girls. The pretty boys are offered money in exchange for their sexual favours and end up as sex slaves to powerful Afghan men. Bought and sold by wealthy masters grown rich from war, most of them meet a violent fate, beaten, raped and displayed like cattle. In this documentary, the camera follows three boy dancers. Assembly line blues p46 The car manufacturing sector reflects both the health of a national economy and changes in employees’ working and living conditions. France’s PSA Sochaux is one of the last bastions of the French working class. These days, the factory’s activities revolve around assembly − the rest is subcontracted out, whereas only 20 years ago, every step of the manufacturing process was carried out there. The plant now employs 12,500 workers, compared to 40,000 in 1979. In this film, we hear from people who have worked there for 30 or 40 years. They have witnessed the changes in production, management and recruitment processes − and their own working conditions − in the last few decades. These secret forces set up in NATO countries in France, Italy, Germany and Belgium in particular perpetrated bloody acts with the help of small far-right groups such as the French secret army organization OAS and the Italian Masonic lodge Propaganda Due, or P2. The antide Gaulle phase of the Algerian War, the Bologna train station massacre (1980), the Munich bombing (1980), and the series of attacks in Brabant (1982−1985) were allegedly the work of the stay-behind forces. In the wake of the earthquake that hit Haiti, the painting Le Serment des ancêtres (Oath of the Ancestors) was found buried

in the rubble of the capital’s Presidential Palace by a team of French fire fighters. The 1822 painting by mixed-race artist Guillaume Guillon-Lethière depicts the historic meeting between the black General Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Alexandre Pétion, the chief of the mulattos of Santo Domingo, in November 1802, when the two men took an oath to drive the French troops out of the island. The Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France is restoring the damaged work. Through an account of the restoration of a work regarded as the symbol of Haiti’s independence, this film tells the painful history of Franco-Haitian relations and, using interviews with writers such as Dany Laferrière and Frankétienne, examines the role culture can have in the reconstruction of the country. 52 min. A film and its era : Once upon a time there were Vincent, François, Paul and the Others p62 This is the portrait of a film that is the portrait of three middle-aged friends. Surrounded by their wives and friends, these men in their fifties are swept up in the turmoil of the end of the 30 years of prosperity that followed World War II. The distraught friends stick together to avoid solitude, while their wives cope with their demoralized mood by taking charge of their own lives and making choices. This portrait of an era was made during the 1974 French presidential campaign which swept Giscard to power, and the political, social and economic divisions of the time run like undercurrents throughout the film. Jean-Michel Basquiat p63 This documentary about Afro-American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960−1988) is both a biopic and a saunter around Basquiat’s stamping-ground of New York. The film interweaves a diary-style chronicle of Basquiat’s public and private life with copious interviews with people who were close to him. Basquiat began his career with pioneering graffiti art work in the streets of New York. He was to become a Romantic hero of contemporary art, giving a muchneeded jolt to a flagging society, acting as a bridge between two eras and opening a door onto Africa and the rest of the world. His fresh take on the Old World stemmed in part from his collaboration with Andy Warhol. He worked outside the dominant conceptual framework, using all available means of expression and raiding cultures to forge a new approach. Claude Monet at Alice’s in Giverny p64 Claude Monet lived at Giverny with his second wife, Alice, from 1883 until his death in 1926 − exactly half of his life. It was there, in his house in Normandy, that he developed the unique pictorial adventure of working in series. His series paintings of haystacks, poplar trees, cathedrals and water lilies occupied him for 25 years. It was also at Giverny that Monet, a widower with two children, married Alice Hoschedé, who had settled there with him along with her six children, in 1892. Far from the noise and bustle of the capital, Monet found his bearings and raised painting to new heights that would illuminate the twentieth century. This film made by Monet’s great-grandson draws from the artist’s correspondence with his daughter. In the voice of Alice, played by

But Russia’s right to display this ancient art collection is contested, for Schliemann had sold the treasure to the Museum of Berlin. In 1993, Boris Yeltsin admitted that the Red Army had plundered the artefacts at the end of the war and that they had remained hidden for 50 years. Germany immediately demanded that the collection be returned to Berlin. But then another owner stepped forward. Turkey claimed the treasure on the grounds that Schliemann had removed the pieces illegally from the Ottoman Empire − followed by the Greeks, who identified themselves as the rightful owners, being the descendants and thus the heirs of the Trojans. When a large meteor struck the Earth around 75 million years ago, oviparous dinosaurs had ruled the roost for over 100 million years. Only very small mammals managed to survive. The meteor’s repercussions cleared the field for a battle for supremacy between reptiles, birds and mammals. Mammals evolved and became more important; as placental animals that were less specialized than their competitors, they were able to adapt to all kinds of habitats. Some eventually evolved into hominids. These two 52-minute films, adapted from an NHK production, tell the story using animated CGI reconstructions and take us all over the world in search of physical evidence of this struggle.

Three years later, the expedition’s two frigates, the Boussole and the Astrolabe, disappeared in the South Pacific. In 1999, contrary to all the theories that had been put forward by historians, archaeologists discovered the traces of a survivors’ camp on the island of Vanikoro. A new dig got under way in 2009. For the Solomon Islands Association and its founder Alain Conan, it was the eighth excavation in 30 years and, as stipulated in the agreement signed with the islands’ authorities, they were once again allotted only 28 days for their search. The lost mummies of Papua New Guinea p94 (working title) The Anga tribe, who live deep in the jungle of Papua New Guinea, have the distinction of possessing a collection of strange, fascinating mummies unlike any others. When missionaries arrived in the mid-twentieth century, they banned the practice of mummification: only a handful of tribespeople carried on with the ritual and the mummies were hidden. Ullah Lohman, a young German photographer, has lived alongside the Anga for a number of years. She knows their secret and has set herself the task of preserving these now fragile treasures. A high-tech science lab has been set up in situ to find out how the Angas’ technique works and why the mummies have lasted so long.

Desert winds, women of rock p96 Amongst the sub-Saharan Tubu nomads, gender roles are sharply defined. The men look after the camels, whilst the women take care of children, do the cooking and raise smaller livestock, under their husbands’ supervision. The yearly date harvest is their only respite from this constricted ancestral lifestyle, in which men always have the upper hand. The women are solely responsible for harvesting and transporting the fruit to be sold on N’Guigmi market, on the border between Chad and Nigeria. Each summer, they set off on a 1,500-kilometre round trip that takes them four months. The date caravan is a symbol of economic independence, and all the women who make the journey derive a sense of pride and self-confidence from it, but it also takes on a private meaning for each of them, according to their circumstances. Lamalera, the last combat p96 On a remote island east of the Indonesian archipelago lies the village of Lamalera, where for centuries inhabitants have ensured their survival by hunting whales with harpoons. Every morning the men push heavy boats called tenas that are used for whale hunting out into the water. For two years now the tenas have been equipped with small outboard motors, a technical development that has enabled the villagers to improve their living conditions considerably and sell much more meat on the markets. Elders fear that organizations for the protection of marine life will point fingers at them for changing their fishing methods. Vanuatu Kannibal magic tour p97 The people of Tanna, an island in Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, have come up with an incongruous idea for a tourist attraction —the Kannibal tour. Paramount, the chief, and the island’s tour operator, both of them “man Tanna“, present and take part in this unusual entertainment for New Caledonian and Australian tourists. Kuarup, the joy of the sun p98 The Yawalapiti Indians of the Xingu River basin make up one of the most astonishing tribes in Brazilian Amazonia. Desirous of reasserting its image and doing its part to preserve its culture, this indigenous community marshalled its forces around its elders to write and film a documentary devoted to the Kuarup funeral rite, a ceremony central to their culture that lasts from the moment an important member of the community passes away until the final wake, culminating in the joyous return of the sun. The mines of hell p99 The silver mines of Potosi, a city in one of the poorest regions of Bolivia, have been killing people continuously for more than four centuries. Every day, miners descend from an altitude of over 4,000 metres above sea level into the depths of the mountain in the hope of making their fortunes. Gradually choked by the dust, under constant threat of a rockfall, they hew at the rock with fear in their bellies, in conditions of extreme stress and physical hardship. 52 min. This series sets out to present issues pertaining to North−South trade and the hidden side of globalization. Tristan Lecomte, 36, an internationally known social entrepreneur, is a pioneer of fair trade in France. For fifteen years he has been travelling around the world developing trade networks with organizations of small producers while putting his expertise and experience at their service. Each film deals with a product that exemplifies North−South imbalances, such as rice, sugar or cocoa. In each programme, Tristan embarks on his investigation in one of the hot spots on the planet, where inequalities are the most glaring. From continent to continent, he highlights the ways in which global trade isn’t working and makes a point of showing that other, more balanced channels can serve as models.

Foula, off the coast of the Shetland Islands, is the most isolated of the Scottish islands. It is doing its utmost to avert the tragic fate of the island of St. Kilda, which was completely evacuated in 1930. Its 26 inhabitants survive partly by adapting to the harsh conditions of a bygone age and partly by experimenting with social enterprises and green technologies. Interweaving a subjective expression of the reality of life on Foula with a poetic evocation of the history of St. Kilda, this documentary shows the islanders leading their day-to-day lives in tune with the rhythm of the seasons and paints the picture of a small theatre of the extreme.
