Last Fast Ride - The Life, Love and Death of a Punk Goddess

DlR: Sonali Gu lati India 72 min

What do parents say when they find out their child is gay? What if they never get the chance to respond? Eleven years after her mother's death, award-winning lesbian filmmaker Sonali Gulati returns to her home town of New Delhi, India, to clean out her house and make peace with the parent she never came out to. In her meditative and personal new documentary, I Am, Gulati interviewed twenty-one Indian families over the course of five years to unravel the intricacies and diffi culties of coming out in India. From Balli, who was kidnapped and threatened by her girlfriend's family, to Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, the first openly gay royal, who had a nervous breakdown before publicly coming out to the press, the dangerous pressures of a homophobic society are undeniable in Gulati's interviews. However, bright spots on the horizon dawn: Piali and her girlfriend walk the dog with Piali's mother, Rituparna finds acceptance in her chosen family, and Aditya marries his partner with his parents' sweet and spiritual blessing: "The seal of God is stamped on every creation." Bay Area punk provocateur Marian Anderson was about more than performing topless and lesbian sex onstage. She was more than powerful vocals and lyrics that would knock you down faster than a Gilman St. mosh-pit. She was more than court cases, censorship and some nefarious business with a banana. Marian Anderson was a visionary musician who spent her life creating art and trying to exorcize her demons through the music of her bands The Insaints, Five Fingers and The Thrill Killers. This is her story. Featuring interviews and archival footage, the film highlights revelations about Anderson's painful past, her career as a sex worker, which started at age 13, her part-time job as a dominatrix, her musical ambi tions and legal problems, and her descent into drug addiction and mental illness. The true heart of the film is revealed as it covers the later part of her life, when she moves to los Angeles and falls in love with Danielle Santos Bernal. Theirs was a volatile relation ship but seemingly Marian's only true love - aside from her music. Never fully able to conquer her drug addiction or mental illness, Marian left behind a legacy of intense music and a life lived hard. Narrated by pop culture icon Henry Rollins, featur ing interviews with punk rock royalty such as Tim Armstrong of Rancid, Dexter Holland of The Offspring, Becky Wreck of lunachicks, Texas Terri, Daniel deleon, Greg langston, Fate Fatal, Ginger Coyote, and more.

In 1968, a Japanese detective film was released called it went on to become a cult classic. The main character was an enchanting screen pres ence who captured the hearts of the Japanese public: Akihiro Miwa. A legendary entertainer and a pioneer of gay activism, Miwa was born Akihiro Maruyama. As a young singer, Miwa popularized androgyny as a fashion statement, fusing the masculine and the feminine into a signal of a new generation of aesthetics. This evolved into performing as a woman and living off-stage as a man. With glitter, wit, evening gowns, and enchanting storytelling, Miwa looks back over his 50-year career and his fascinating life in music, film and television (Miwa was a friend and lover of author Yukio Mishima). At the time of the documentary, Miwa is selling out performances of his one-man show "L'Amour." Having sold millions of records and drawing amazing crowds to theatres, Miwa continues to fight for gay rights, among other issues. This documentary by Pascal-Alex Vincent (Give Me Your Hand, Frameline33) reveals the life story of this wonderful performer and societal critic who has an eye for identifying hypocrisy. Miwa remains incredibly popular in a country where contra dictions permeate life. Black Lizard
