METAMORPHOSIS bitmap lock-up
The earliest insects in Earth’s history did not metamorphose; they hatched from eggs, essentially as miniature adults. Between 280 million and 300 million years ago, however, some insects began to mature a little differently— they hatched in forms that neither looked nor behaved like their adult versions...

DEATH OF CELLS After hatching from an egg as larva, frogs go through an elaborate metamorphosis that takes up to three months, during which the young differ in appearance and structure from the adult. This process includes the programmed death of cells, or apoptosis.

“It is almost banal to say so yet it needs to be stressed continually: all is creation, all is change, all is flux, all is metamorphosis.” —Henry MIller

In frog development, the eggs hatch and give rise to tadpoles, small aquatic larvae that have external gills. As the tadpole grows, internal gills and limbs form. Several significant changes occur during metamorphosis into the adult, including growth of a large mouth and tongue, loss of gills, formation of lungs, growth of the front legs, and resorption of the tail.

Complete metamorphosis, as shown in the diagram, involves 4 distinct stages of growth: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. As the creatures grow, its shape changes completely. During the pupal stage, the body undergoes a complete reorganization, transforming into the adult. This involves considerable destruction of larval tissues by lysosomes.

Complete metamorphosis is when there is no suggestion of the adult form in the larval stage, e.g., in the transformation from tadpole to frog or from larva to pupa to adult in bees and butterflies. When the successive larval stages resemble the adult (as in the grasshopper and the lobster), metamorphosis is called incomplete. 25
Metamorphosis is associated with adaptive changes in the way an organism interacts with its environment.

Many ancient myths end in a metamorphosis. As Apollo is chasing the nymph Daphne, she calls on her river-god father for help and he turns her into a laurel tree to save her. Out of anger and jealousy, the goddess Athena turns the marvelous weaver Arachne into a spider that will spin only beautiful webs.
