Installing solar panels on the roof of your home is one of the ways you can reduce your carbon footprint. The panels harness the power of the sun and produce clean energy for your home. Energy from the sun’s rays are abundant here year-round – after all, we live in the Sunshine State! It can feel like an overwhelming project to take on, so here’s some basic information.
What do you need to go solar?
Must own your roof and/or get permission from your HOA Have a newer roof (under 10 years old) Have an estimate of yearly electricity usage (check utility bills)
Benefits of going solar
It increases the value of your home, estimates say by around 4% They pay for themselves over time by reducing or eliminating your power bill Stabilizes your energy costs and insulates you from utility rate increases Long life span (most panels are guaranteed for 25-30 years) If you include batteries as part of your system, it provides backup power during outages caused by storms There are federal tax credits to help cover the cost of the system
Going Solar in the News
In April, Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed a net metering bill that had passed the Florida legislature which would have reduced the credit received from power utilities for sending excess electricity back to the grid It was a big win for the solar industry in FL and for individual homeowners New federal legislation also increased the tax credit for going solar and other green home improvements The tax credit is now 30% of the total cost of the installation and this has been extended for the next 10 years
Rev. Rex is in the process of having solar panels installed at his home. If you have questions or are wondering if solar panels are right for you, please reach out to him at rexc@fpcnaples.org.
