Metal Fabricating Industry Do More with Less: CNC Carbide Saws are designed for the market’s demand

HYDMECH’s new carbide saws are the latest example of this manufacturer proactively designing around market demand. “Our heavy-duty carbide saw line offers more precise, reliable cutting tools for skilled manufacturers and workers to put to good use across America and around the world,” says HYDMECH’s VP of Sales and Marketing Rick Arcaro. Just one of the new HYDMECH CNC Carbide Cold Saws can do the work of five conventional band saws, without sacrificing quality – designed for the customer’s demand for precision cutting tools that are reliable, highly productive, and have superior tool life. The carbide saws come in different sizes, including 65mm, 80mm, 100mm, 125mm, 150mm and 175mm, all packaged with standard bar loaders, chip removal and mist lubrication. “For those manufacturers cutting high volume in automated cells – this machine is a must-have,” says Tony Caggiano, Regional Sales ...continued on page 2...

Turn Down the Heat! CONSIDER THESE TYPES OF CHILLERS TO CONTROL EMPLOYEE AND MACHINE TEMP IN HOT WEATHER

Heat can equally affect the health of employees and equipment, both of which can reduce productivity and be costly. According to the Arrhenius Equation, an electronic device can operate for 32 years at 113° F and will last four years at 176° F. If you are experiencing issues with overheating, refer to your machine manual - often simple preventative maintenance measures can help control machine temperature. Once those options are exhausted, consider one of the following types of chillers as a next level effort: 1. EVAPORATIVE COOLERS (swamp or desert coolers) are an efficient means of cooling an industrial facility, but work better in low humidity (below 60%). A fan inside of the device draws in air over a cooling pad. The cooling pad is kept wet by a pump and water tank inside the system. As the air makes its way through the pad, it’s cooled by the evaporation of the water. In low humidity these add moisture to the air and can drop the temperature up to 20 degrees. They tend to be more cost-effective, energy efficient and environmentally friendly over other cooling options. In areas where humidity is high, they’re not effective as they make the air more humid. 2. AIR CONDITIONING works well in humid climates because it dehumidifies and cools the air. Chemical compounds called refrigerants are used to reduce the air temperature. Fans pull in warm air, which passes over coils that contain refrigerants. These chemicals are extremely susceptible to evaporation and turn to gas when air passes over them. They then absorb heat from the air and lower its temperature. A compressor subjects the refrigerant gas to high pressure, which converts it back to a liquid. The excess heat created through that process is pumped outside. Air conditioning works well for small areas, but for large areas an extremely powerful AC unit is necessary. Many industrial facilities use a larger, central cooling system and portable air conditioners are frequently used as spot coolers near equipment that gets partially hot.

3. CHILLERS are popular in industrial facilities to remove heat from water/liquid through vapor-compression or an absorption-refrigeration cycle. The chiller is used to cool liquid that is then pumped into an air conditioner’s coil system. Chillers can be used on their own to cool and dehumidify air. Air is pushed through the chilled water to cool an indoor space or pumped directly to a piece of machinery to prevent overheated. a. Vapor-compression chillers (mechanical) are powered by an electric motor, gas turbine or other similar technology. b. Absorption chillers require little electricity and rely on a heat source such as steam or combustion. They do take up more space and operate less efficiently. When using water-cooled chillers a cooling tower is often required. 4. COOLING TOWERS are used to remove waste heat from machinery and industrial processes as opposed to constantly pumping in cool water. Cylindrical structures with pipes pump heated water from another industrial process to the cooling tower while an electric fan brings air into the system. When the air and water come into contact, some of the water evaporates and then cools the rest of the water. The air becomes hot and is released outdoors. Cooling towers can be either be open- or closed-circuit systems. 1. Natural draft cooling towers take advantage of the natural process of convection to move air throughout the system. Warms, humid air naturally rises will cooler air falls into the tower, creating a constant flow. 2. Mechanical draft cooling towers, however, use fans or other machinery to circulate air. These types of cooling towers are more effective but also require more electricity to operate. Mechanical draft towers can also be subdivided into two different types depending on which way air and water move through the system. a. With cross flow towers, air moves horizontally while the water moves downward. b. Counterflow towers, which tend to be more energy efficient, air moves upward while water moves downward.

COMPETITIVE EDGE

In 1949 Nick Tepavchevich and his wife Gloria decided to take a big step and become partners in business making handrails for homes. World War II was over and families were expanding with the returning GI’s, so it was a great time to address the expanding housing market’s need for handrails. In the 70’s Nick’s two boys, Tom and Nick Jr., joined the business as the start of the second generation and ran it through the 80’s. They wanted to grow the sales from ornamental iron into stairs and rails which ultimately consisted of fire escapes for multi-family structures. They also wanted to start to engage in some light structural steel fabrication. In 2001 Tom Tepavchevich’s son Tom Jr. entered the firm FABTECH 2018

learning the business from the ground up. He learned early on that the required skill level they needed in their shop was becoming increasingly difficult to find. This challenge increased as they continued to specialize in more complicated work, such as spiral staircases. At this point they were manually laying out and using magnetic base drills for fabrication. Tom Jr. decided they needed to invest in a level of automation that could eliminate his dependence on manual layout and improve their hole making productivity - a CNC drill line needed to be apart of their future. In view of their limited shop space they decided that the only viable solution would be a single spindle traveling column CNC drill line, as it required half the space of a traditional drill line. After extensive research Tom purchased a FICEP EXCALIBUR 12 CNC DRILL LINE. His principal decisionmaking factors were based on:

• Low investment cost versus high productivity • Ability to scribe all surfaces with information provided from the 3D model to eliminate manual layout • Automatic tool changer ...continued on page 5... visionaries to learn what’s new and what’s next in manufacturing. Since this was their first CNC equipment, the shop did not have fabricators with experience in this technology. The employee that Tom selected to train on the machine found its operation easy to understand and he adapted to the technology quickly. Looking back on the purchase - Tom says the greatest advantages of the FICEP Excalibur are in its accuracy and its ability to eliminate manual layout. Currently their fabricators are importing CNC programs directly into the Excalibur 12 from the CAD files furnished by their outside detailers. In addition to the hole location data, they are bringing in all the labor saving scribing information, eliminating manual programming and even performing automatic layout (on stair stringers, for example) which encompasses a major part of their business. The human element is eliminated as the required detail can easily be located and welded to the stair stringer.

THE FICEP EXCALIBUR 12 PERFORMS THE STAIR STRINGER LAYOUT AS PART OF THE DOWNLOADED PROGRAM

In addition to automating layout and typical bolt holes they have found the milling capability of the Excalibur to be a real game changer. Typically they are using their FICEP Excalibur 12 to also generate slots in structural steel members as required. The milling capability of the FICEP Excalibur 12 also adds significantly to its versatility for the generation of mechanical openings for example.

Thank you to the contributors of MachinistMemes.com for this meme.

Tom states even though our principal business is in the area of “miscellaneous structural steel”, the company has been able to land jobs such as an 8-story building (see image below) with the productivity of the FICEP Excalibur 12.

“Bottom line - the FICEP Excalibur has enabled us to do the same volume of a few years ago with less that half the shop labor. This is the type of cost reduction that we needed to continue to grow our business, offer our clients great pricing, performance and expand our market”.
