Make a Lasting Prevention Impression with MAGAZINE Nicotine is Addictive Nicotine kills. Worldwide, more than 8 million people a year die from tobacco use. Don’t become part of that number. The Death Count 8,000,000+ per year No matter how you use nicotine, these products will come back to bite you. If you use products with nicotine you’ll begin to crave nicotine, causing you to use it more often. Welcome to nicotine addiction! Nicotine attaches to special receptors in the brain, flooding the brain with chemicals like acetylcholine (energizes the body) and dopamine (makes you feel good.) Keep using nicotine and the brain gets used to the flood of chemicals. This is how your brain gets addicted. The brain is not fully developed until the age of 25. Start using nicotine before 25 and your brain literally grows up with a nicotine addiction. This can lead to mental illnesses and diseases such as depression and anxiety, and locks in nicotine addiction for life. The younger you start using nicotine, the harder it is to quit in the future. Nicotine products are terrible. • Smoking harms almost every organ in your body and causes heart disease, stroke, and • All the dangers of vaping are not known, but vaping gets you addicted to nicotine much quicker. • Smokeless tobacco has crazy levels of nicotine and leads to a fast addiction and nasty diseases. Offers a concise overview of heroin and opioids, focusing on their effects on the mind and body, addiction risks, and overdose signs. These drugs, including heroin and prescription opioids like oxycodone and fentanyl, can have a profound impact on teenagers and college-aged students. With their potent effects on the brain, these substances pose a heightened risk of dependence and addiction in this age group.

What Are Heroin & Opioids?
Impacts on Mind and Body
Recognizing Addiction
>>>>FORWARD FEED MAGAZINE<<<<+HEALTH+INFO+PROGRESS+ #FWDFEED>>>>>>>>> Heroin and other opioids have created a huge public health crisis. In the 1990s, pharmaceutical companies started promising the medical community that opioids were safe, and doctors began prescribing them more. Because of this, large numbers of people started to abuse/misuse them. This has led to countless overdoses and deaths. HEROIN & OPIOID
Out of Control What Are Opioids? Opioids are drugs that react to opioid receptors in the brain and reduce pain signals. The most popular illegal opioids are heroin and Fentanyl. The most commonly abused prescription medications include oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine. It’s important to know the signs of addiction so you know what to look for if you think someone is abusing drugs. These are some common signs Continued usage of the drug, even though they want to stop. • Constantly worrying about running out of drugs. Falling behind on bills because they’re spending too much money on drugs. Driving or doing other dangerous activities while they’re under the influence of drugs Focusing excessive energy and time on getting and using drugs, while ignoring responsibilities and healthier activities. Experiencing physical withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the drug. • Craving the drug regularly. This can be daily or several times during the day. Mixing it with alcohol and other drugs. Taking it in ways other than prescribed –snorting it or injecting it Increased tolerance - needing more of it to get the desired effect. • Missing school/work/family obligations because of drug use. Buying it illegally on the street. Taking too much at a time and running out before the refill. • Lying, cheating, or stealing just to gain access to the drug. Addiction can sometimes make people do bad things, but it doesn’t always make them a bad person—just a person that needs help.
Heroin & Opioids: The Deadliest High
ABUSE Is
When a person stops using opioids, they can experience withdrawal symptoms within as little as a few hours that can last for days. Many users feel so terrible during a withdrawal that they seek out more drugs just to feel halfway “normal” again.
Common withdrawal symptoms are: Severe flu-like symptoms Intense bone and muscle pain • Chills Insomnia Restlessness Abdominal cramping • Anxiety Irritability Diarrhea Sweating Withdrawal symptoms can lead to death when not urgently treated .
Relapse When a person stops using drugs for a period of time but then starts using them again, this is called a relapse. All addictive substances pose the risk for relapse, but those struggling with heroin and opioids have a higher chance of relapse. A relapse is a common part of recovery, but doesn’t always happen. If you know someone who relapses, it doesn’t mean they’ve ruined everything. They can get help again and stop using drugs before things get even worse. There are many different things someone can do to help prevent a relapse from occurring. If you have a friend or a family member who is struggling with addiction, it will be helpful for you to know what often leads to a relapse so you can try to help them. Preventing teens from vaping and life-long nicotine addiction is an important goal that can be achieved through education and open dialogue. Let’s Get Talking About Vaping... One of the most important things you can do as a parent to prevent teens from vaping is to sit them down and have a conversation about it. Before you begin, you should know the facts about vaping. Vaping has become incredibly common among teenagers in recent years, but what is it and is it Vaping is a new and largely unresearched way to consume nicotine, the addictive chemical found in tobacco. Vape juice, a liquid made of water, glycerine, flavorings, and different amounts of nicotine, is heated up by a battery device and inhaled. Popular vapes like Juul contain an equal level of nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. This makes it easier for teens to Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world and starting young can hook you for life. Teen vapers have a harder time quitting as their brain develops around the addiction. Statistics now show that teen vapers are also 4x more likely to start smoking cigarettes. There are many tobacco products, and some may even look very different from the ones you may know about. Can you recognize all the different forms of tobacco products? Look below to see the types of tobacco products and what they look like so you can stay away! 1. SMOKELESS TOBACCO CAUSES A PERSON TO BECOME REALLY SICK THE MORE THEY USE. IT CAN GIVE YOU ORAL CANCER, LUNG CANCER, HEART DISEASE, AND EVEN KILL YOU. REALLY GROSS FACTS ABOUT SMOKELESS TOBACCO Smokeless tobacco is known by many namesdip, chew, spit- but it is rarely called “safe.” Here are some nasty facts about smokeless tobacco. 3.SMOKELESS TOBACCO CONTAINS SO MUCH NICOTINE THAT MANY PEOPLE BECOME ADDICTED AFTER THE FIRST USE. 4. OVER HALF OF SMOKELESS TOBACCO USERS DEVELOP THICK, WHITE, SORE PATCHES IN THEIR MOUTH. 5. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN SMOKELESS TOBACCO, INCLUDING 28 KNOWN CANCER CAUSING CHEMICALS. 6. BAD BREATH, STAINED AND ROTTED TEETH, AND WHITE OR RED SORES ON THE MOUTH ARE ALL NASTY SIDE EFFECTS OF USING SMOKELESS TOBACCO THAT MAKE A USER LOOK AS BAD AS THEY FEEL. 2. SOMETIMES SOMELESS TOBACCO IS CALLED “SPIT” BECAUSE WHEN YOU PUT IT BETWEEN YOUR LIP AND GUM OR CHEEK, IT MAKES YOU HAVE TO SPIT OR DROOL DARK, SLIMY TOBACCO JUICE EVERY FEW MINUTES. They Said What? Here’s what the Tobacco Industry admitted about its effort to specifically recruit young users. In the past, the Tobacco Industry told the public that nicotine was not an addictive drug. However, studies show that nicotine is mind-altering, addictive and deadly. The Tobacco Industry lies about the dangers of nicotine products, especially to youth, but they could not hide the truth forever. Here are some excerpts of the Tobacco Industry admitting the truth about their products. “Don’t vape. Don’t use Juul. Don’t start using nicotine if you don’t have a preexisting relationship with nicotine...yes it is addictive.” -Kevin Burns, ex-Juul CEO “We were targeting kids...it was just company policy.” -Terence Sullivan, a sales rep for RJ Reynolds “Very few consumers are aware of the effects of nicotine, its addictive nature, and that nicotine is a poison.” signed by H.D. Steele “Serious efforts to learn to smoke occur between ages 12 and 13 in most cases.” -Imperial Tobacco Limited “Certainly Philip Morris should continue efforts for Marlboro in the youth market...” -1974 Philip Morris Document “Of course it’s addictive. That’s why you smoke the stuff.” -Ross Johnson, ex-Chief Executive of RJ Reynolds E-Cigarettes E-cigarettes, or vapes, are easily the most commonly used form of tobacco product by young people in the United States. They are battery powered tobacco products that simulate smoking by allowing the user to inhale flavored vapor containing nicotine. The sweet flavors may seem appealing, but the reality is that this vapor contains toxic chemicals and particles that damage the body. Vaping is not FDA approved, delivers up to 20 times as much nicotine, is easily addictive, harms young adult brain development, causes lung related illness, affects memory, concentration, attention, mood, and has even killed users. There are many types of e-cigarettes, and each looks very different-be on the lookout for some of these products! E-cigarettes are a new product and have not been around long enough to study the long-term side effects, but there is evidence of serious lung damage, cancer and death in people who have been vaping for even just a few years. They may not smell as stinky, but e-cigarettes are just as dangerous as cigarettes! 7 Quantity 100 500 1000 2500 5000+ MINIMAGS Plain 1.15 .95 .90 .88 .83 Personalized 1.20 1.00 .95 .93 .88 Revised and Updated Minimags! This is called addiction. Without nicotine, the addicted brain suffers withdrawal. Withdrawal is a lot like being sick, both mentally and physically. The body and brain react to the lack of nicotine as the brain tries to change back to its normal state. This process makes users depressed, frustrated, angry and irritable. They may have trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, headaches, fatigue and an increased appetite. It also leads to nausea, a sore throat, cramping and insomnia. Withdrawal leads the user to start craving tobacco so they can feel normal again.

Nicotine is the drug found in cigarettes and other tobacco products that keeps you hooked. The more you smoke, the more dependent upon nicotine your body becomes. Nicotine dependence means that it’s difficult to stop smoking, even though it’s causing you harm. When you stop using tobacco, your body will experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. No matter how long you’ve smoked, quitting smoking is a great decision that can improve your overall health. Understanding Addiction Nicotine produces physical and mood-altering effects in your brain that are temporarily pleasing. These effects make you want to use tobacco and lead to dependence. Stopping tobacco use causes withdrawal symptoms, including irritability and anxiety. Many effective treatments for nicotine dependence are available to help you manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms and stop smoking for good. Take Control: The Time to Quit is Now! NICOTINE ADDICTION: BREAKING THE HABIT SIGNS OF NICOTINE DEPENDENCE For some people, even a tiny amount of tobacco use can lead to nicotine addiction. Signs of addiction include: You can’t stop smoking, even after one or more serious attempts. You keep smoking even after developing health problems, such as problems with your heart or lungs. MARIJUANA
be in the dark about “weed light” RESOURCES
Don’t
Many users become dizzy, have difficulty walking and have bloodshot eyes SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF USING MARIJUANA Users can have problems with memory, learning and problem solving after ingesting the drug only a few times. Abusers lose coordination and their senses of sight, hearing, touch, time and depth are distorted. Marijuana increases heart rate, causes anxiety and panic attacks and has also been linked to depression. “ LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF USING MARIJUANA The most common long-term effect of marijuana abuse is something called amotivational syndrome. Abusers lose interest in the future and stop caring about things that used to be important to them. They neglect school, chores, personal health, and relationships. It can take up to two years to regain a normal motivation level. Marijuana can cause a great deal of other damage over time, including: Increasing tolerance—the need for larger amounts to feel the same effects Permanent damage to thinking and reasoning ability Chronic bronchitis, frequent chest colds and pneumonia Increased risk of lung or oral cancer Weakened immune system Damage to the reproductive system and infertility in both sexes Miscarriage or brain damage to fetuses WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT MARIJUANA? Marijuana is a Schedule 1 Illicit Substance in the United States, meaning it is one of the most illegal drugs to use, possess, or sell. Exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke will cause a “contact high” and potentially show up in a drug test. In one study, 33% of arrested reckless drivers tested positive for marijuana. Marijuana is legal for recreational and medical use in several states for adults over the age of 21, and legal for medical use in many more states. Marijuana is used by 55 million adults in the United States, with 33% of them having a substance abuse disorder related to marijuana. PUT MARIJUANA OUT If someone offers you marijuana, the best thing to do is say, “No, thanks.” You don’t owe them any explanation. Say you’re just not interested and make a quick exit. Keep potheads and pot smoke out of your life. Your brain, your body and your goals are too important to be a burnout. STREET NAMES FOR MARIJUANA There are over 200 slang terms for marijuana, including: Pot, Weed, Herb, Kush, Mary Jane, Dope, Chronic, Bud, Sinsemilla, ganja, hashish and hash oil (stronger forms of marijuana). MARIJUANA AND THE MIND Marijuana’s effects can be unpredictable. The effects that abusers are seeking include relaxation, release and giddiness. However, this is not always the case. The chemical THC in marijuana mimics neurotransmitters that send messages between nerve cells, affecting the brain areas involved in pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, movement and time perception. This unnatural alteration in the brain’s usual activity can permanently disrupt brain function. This can make it unsafe for a person using marijuana to drive a car, operate heavy machinery, engage in sports or other potentially dangerous physical activities. Marijuana use often comes with many adverse effects. Many users become dizzy, have difficulty walking and have red, bloodshot eyes. Terrible thirst— “cotton mouth”—and hunger— “the munchies”—are typical. Some people fall asleep when they use marijuana. Others experience intense anxiety or paranoia. STONE COLD STUPID

While the threats posed by illegal drugs are dangerous enough, they are not the only substance abuse concern for parents. Along with legal prescription drugs, synthetic drugs (or “Legal Highs”) are often mistakenly viewed by teens as safe because they are not prohibited by law. These dangerous products appear on gas station cash counters and in head shops around the country, giving the impression that they are legal, danger-free alternatives to better-known drugs like marijuana, LSD, and other psychoactives. National, state, and local law enforcement agencies are scrambling to devise an effective response strategy to these products, but in the meantime it’s up to parents to educate themselves and their children about synthetic drugs. It could save your child’s life. What are Synthetic Drugs? Psychoactive drugs contain chemicals that travel through the bloodstream to the brain, triggering forms of hallucinations such as false smells and tastes, moods, and other forms of altered consciousness. Unscrupulous companies looking for a way to cash in on the addiction of drug users without technically breaking the law discovered ways to artificially combine, or “synthesize,” chemicals that would have the same effects as illegal drugs. Oddly enough, in some ways these synthetic creations are more dangerous than the drugs they copy, since there is little to no information on their potential dangers. In one case, users of a newly designed and unstudied synthetic drug developed lifelong symptoms similar to those of Parkinson’s disease after just one dose. WHAT MAKES IT SO UNSAFE?

As with any illegal drug, acetyl fentanyl is not checked for purity and there aren’t any standards for its production or ingredients. That means that it could be contaminated with other substances, it might be packaged as other drugs, or it could have a variety of potencies. All these variables make acetyl fentanyl a risky proposition.

Just by itself, acetyl fentanyl is five times more potent than heroin. And heroin is considered to be the most addictive and dangerous

As a new addition to the illicit drug market, acetyl fentanyl is proving to be quite an alarming substance. Derived from fentanyl, a pain relieving opioid commonly used to treat cancer patients and those with chronic pain, it is an extremely potent, man-made designer drug. And while it has only just started to infiltrate illicit markets, acetyl fentanyl has caused dozens of overdose deaths. Also know as desmethyl fentanyl, this drug was synthesized around the same time as fentanyl in the 1960s. It was never licensed for therapeutic use, but it was sold illegally although rarely. With the drug’s reemergence, healthcare professionals and law enforcement officers have quickly learned how deadly it is. © 2014 Education Specialty Publishing, LLC P.O. drug out there. If acetyl fentanyl is combined with other opioids, amphetamines, or cocaine, there is a very good chance for overdose. If it’s labeled as a different substance and sold to unsuspecting users, they may overdose. And when the potency of the drug varies from batch to batch, it’s already so strong that just a small error in dosing can cause an overdose. HOW IS IT USED? Acetyl fentanyl is either injected into the veins or taken in pill form. It’s frequently added to other opioids, including heroin, to make the “high” more intense. It can resemble heroin in consistency, packaging, and color, making it difficult for users to know what they’re getting. In pill form, acetyl fentanyl is often packaged to look like oxycodone, which may result in deadly consequences. Just by itself, acetyl fentanyl is five times more potent than heroin. Tranq is used by individuals looking for a cheap and easy high or to lengthen fentanyls euphoric effects, but the consequences of using this drug include significant harm and even death. The risks associated with this drug cannot be overstated.

WHY IT’S DANGEROUS

One of the main risks associated with tranq is the real potential for fatal overdose. The danger of combining xylazine and fentanyl lies in the fact that they both depress the respiratory system, making it difficult for the user to breathe. And because xylazine is a sedative, not

an opioid, it may not respond to standard opioid overdose reversal treatments, naloxone, often known as Narcan. Naloxone will address the fentanyl but may not not rouse a victim sedated with xylazine.

Rainbow Fentanyl

Pamphlet

Another risk to be aware of is that xylazine causes gruesome wounds and scaly, decaying skin tissue called eschar, which can become infected and lead to amputation. Users end up with patches of oozing rotting flesh, some suffering from fleas and maggots eating their rotten skin.

CARFENTANIL

Carfentanil is a variation of fentanyl and is considered the world’s most powerful commercial opioid. It is 100 times stronger than fentanyl and over 10,000 times stronger than morphine.

It is not intended for use in humans and is used to tranquilize large animals - like elephants. The drug is extremely powerful. Protective clothing and masks must be worn to handle the drug so none is inhaled, or touches the skin.

WAY_TO_GO

Carfentanil is so powerful that the effects on the body and brain begin very quickly. Overdose symptoms begin immediately after ingestion. If an overdose reversal treatment is not administered the effects are often fatal. Even if treated quickly, the strength of this drug usually requires numerous doses of Narcan to fully revive an overdose victim. Most people who were given Carfentanil did not realize what they had taken as it was mixed with more commonly abused drugs.

Street Names: Drop Dead, Serial Killer

Methods of Use: Injection, Inhalation, Ingestion, Skin Contact

Actions: Used as a tranquilizing agent for elephants and other large mammals. Carfentanil was used as a chemical weapon in Russia.

Warning Signs: Respiratory depression or arrest, drowsiness, disorientation, sedation, pinpoint pupils, clammy skin, blue lips or fingernails

TRAGEDIES

Carfentanil was linked to mass overdoses in 14 states. In Ohio, 35 overdoses were reported over just three days, six were fatal, ten were in just a nine hour time span. The lethal dose is as small as a grain of salt.

DOPE DEALER... OR PHARMACY?

Answer the following question:

Deadly drugs can be most easily purchased from:

a.) the sleazy guy who operates under the bridge after dark. b.) right over the counter at your neighborhood drug store, supermarket or convenience store.

If you answered “b,” you are correct. If you’ve gotten into the habit of heading for the drug store or the medicine cabinet in order to feel good, you’re probably already addicted. Even though those medications were purchased legally, they are just as dangerous as illegal drugs when abused.

This time-release oxycodone, prescribed for intense pain, compares the high risk of death, rapid addiction and severe withdrawal symptoms to its cousin, heroin.

LEGAL DOESN’T CANCEL LETHAL!

Today more young people than ever are buying their highs legally, right over the counter. The number of young people purchasing legal medications for “highs” has grown so large that the practice has been given its own code name: OTC

(Over The Counter) Drug Abuse.

OTC drugs are just as dangerous as prescribed and illegal drugs. Young people across the nation are becoming physically, psychologically and behaviorally addicted, and some are even dying because they think if it’s legal then it’s safe. They’re wrong.

Methamphetamine, most commonly just called meth for short, is a lab-made drug often found in powder form or as clear rock or crystal. It’s sometimes pressed into pill form to resemble other drugs in order to make it more appealing to unknowing users. Meth is a stimulant that acts on the brain and body to create an intense rush of energy. While meth is most often mass produced in “superlabs” by illegal drug manufacturers, it can also be made cheaply and easily in small batches using common chemicals like pseudoephedrine (a drug found in cold medication). Because it is inexpensive to produce and highly addictive, drug dealers can make high profits from selling meth, leading to a staggering increase in use around the country. In order to maximize profits, these drug manufacturers have begun mixing in other powerful drugs like Fentanyl into the meth they sell, creating an extremely deadly combination that can kill with just one use. Despite this danger, 2.5 million people reported using meth in the past 12 months. YOUR BRAIN ON METH Meth has a profound impact on brain functions by increasing the amount of dopamine. This natural chemical is involved in body movement, as well as the motivation and reinforcement of rewards. Because meth rapidly releases high levels of dopamine in the brain, the reward centers are stimulated. The brain associates reward with the drug, making the user want to repeat the experience. As the user continues to abuse meth, the brain and body become dependent on these higher dopamine levels to function, leading to addiction. WHAT IS METHAMPHETAMINE? Cocaine is a dangerous, highly addictive and illegal stimulant that can be found in the form of a fine white powder and is usually ingested by snorting through the nose. Cocaine can often be mixed with other dangerous substances in order to make it more potent. These so-called “fillers” can sometimes include drugs like Fentanyl, a dangerous opioid responsible for countless overdoses and deaths. Around 106,000 people died from overdose related deaths in the last year, and cocaine contributes to this number. WHAT IS CRACK? Crack and cocaine are effectively the same substance, just in a different form. Crack is named after the crackling sound it makes as it is heated and smoked. It is much more powerful than its powdered counterpart but its effects don’t last as long. The criminal charges associated with this form are also stronger. A user being caught with crack will be charged more heavily than a user caught with powdered cocaine. BRAIN CHANGES Cocaine produces changes within a person’s brain that encourage repeated use, eventually leading to addiction. Evidence shows that one in six people who use cocaine will develop a stimulant drug problem. That means, in addition to becoming addicted to cocaine, a person will seek out other drugs that effect the brain in a similar way. Cocaine can cause damage to the brain even after just a few uses. When the drug is used, it causes the brain to emit dopamine, a chemical the brain naturally produces that creates a pleasurable feeling. Because it effects the brain this way, one of the serious symptoms of cocaine comedown is depression. SHORT-TERM EFFECTS While users experience a short, extreme rush that results in a period of euphoria, this quickly fades, and they are left with symptoms such as Hyper-Activity Jumpiness Sleep Deprivation Increased Respiration Loss of Appetite Visual and Auditory Hallucinations Anxiety Erratic Behavior Nausea Hyperstimulation Increased Blood Pressure

Recovery from Cocaine Abuse or Addiction If you are reading this brochure then you or someone you know probably believes that you are suffering from cocaine abuse. Cocaine is a very powerful drug with a high potential for abuse. It’s one of the most habit forming illicit drugs. It’s not glamorous and it’s not good for you. For every rush there is a drop, and every minute spent on top will be met with two on bottom. Complicating the lure of cocaine is its low social stigma. The perception of cocaine’s effects dovetail with American values of industriousness and drive: It’s an upper that ‘helps you work more’. It’s the drug of choice of fashionable glitterati, executives, millionaires and celebrities. But even they end up dead or in rehab. Don’t be fooled by the abuser’s façade: cocaine is by no means harmless. Detecting Cocaine Dependency Cocaine addiction can also be called cocaine dependency This is because the sufferer’s body and mind are reliant upon cocaine. Here are some questions that might help to clarify if one is cocaine dependent. Have I given up things that enjoyed in order to use cocaine? • Have I chosen cocaine over a friend or loved one? Does cocaine interfere with my work or finances? Do find it difficult to turn down an offer of cocaine? Do need cocaine to have a good or even acceptable day? • Do get angry or depressed when I am denied cocaine? Do constantly seek, use or think about cocaine? • Do suffer from paranoia, depression, an intense craving for more cocaine, exhaustion, anxiety, mood swings, irritability, fatigue, depression or insomnia when stop using cocaine suddenly? Someone who could answer yes to any of the first four questions may be dependent upon cocaine. Someone who could answer yes to the second four questions is addicted to cocaine. If you answer yes to any of those eight questions, please seek help
COCAINE cessation RECOVERY COCAINE & CRACK WHAT IS COCAINE? Cocaine is purified extract derived from the leaves of the Erythroxylon coca bush. This extract is chemically processed to produce powdered cocaine and crack cocaine. HOW DOES IT WORK? Cocaine interferes with the neurotransmitters the brain, preventing them from binding to other neurons. As result, these chemicals build up in the brain and cause feeling of euphoria what users refer to as the “high.” HOW IS IT USED? STATISTICS Powdered cocaine may be: Inhaled (snorted) through the nose. Dissolved in water and injected. Rubbed onto mucous tissues. Crack and the fumes are inhaled. Over 1.1 Americans abuse or are dependent on cocaine. Cocaine is involved in 450,000 to 550,000 emergency department visits every year. Overdoses about 5,000 deaths every year in the U.S. Cocaine users 25 times likely to experience sudden death when they combine the drug with alcohol. WHAT IS CRACK? Crack is a highly addictive illegal stimulant, processed from powdered cocaine into white or off-white “rocks” (which is why it is sometimes called “crack rock”). It can be smoked or mixed with other drugs. Crack is typically smoked from a glass pipe, which a person uses to heat the “rocks” and inhale the vapor. The drug gained notoriety during the so-called “crack epidemic” of the late 1980s and early 1990s when it became widespread in cities across the United States. Since it was easy to produce, dealers could sell it cheaply at first, knowing that as people became quickly addicted to it, users would begin to pay more and more to get their fix. The use of crack has steadily grown since its introduction due to its portability, relatively low cost, and quick effects. It’s highly potent, incredibly dangerous, and can leave a person seriously addicted after just one use. QUICK HIGHS, INTENSE LOWS Because it is inhaled directly into the lungs, and quickly reaches the brain, crack produces an almost immediate euphoric high described as “feeling invincible.” The high is short-lived, however, lasting only about 10-15 minutes. After it subsides, users experience a severe crash that long outlasts the high itself, with feelings of depression, anxiety and intense craving for more of the drug. In order to experience the intense high again, as well as to avoid the pain of coming down, users increasingly require more crack on a regular basis. Users soon begin to experience sleeplessness, as well as paranoia, agitation and anger – even when they aren’t high. Nearly 39 million people in the U.S. have used cocaine in their lifetime. Of this number, more than 1.9 million people have used the drug in the past month. YOU’RE NOT YOU WHEN YOU’RE HIGH At today’s dance clubs, all-night parties, and raves, more and more people are being exposed to club drugs. Club drugs are drugs that alter a person’s mood, awareness and behavior. A lot of people think club drugs are harmless, but they can cause serious mental and physical problems—and, sometimes, even death. There are plenty of reasons to stay away from club drugs. Most club drugs are made in illegal, makeshift labs. This makes it nearly impossible to tell exactly what they are made of. Most of the time, club drugs are not “pure” and contain harmful chemicals or other dangerous drugs. Club drugs can affect you very quickly in a negative way. You might not even know that something is wrong until it is too late. Many people combine club drugs with alcohol and other moodaltering substances, which creates an even greater risk for both mental and physical harm. IT COSTS MORE THAN MONEY… Club drugs are also addictive. GHB, rohypnol, and methamphetamine rewire a user’s brain and make it hard to stop using. It causes users to feel as though they can’t feel normal without the drug or like they have to take more and more to feel the same effect. Similarly, users of LSD, ketamine and MDMA experience withdrawal symptoms such as sleepiness, loss of appetite, depression and paranoia. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? When you use club drugs, you are at risk of experiencing potential date-rape situations. Club drugs affect the senses, memory, coordination, and judgement as well as cause loss of muscle/motor control and blurred vision. Many users of club drugs often also suffer memory loss. All of this makes it easy for people to take advantage The truth is that club drugs are illegal, harmful substances. Make healthy, informed decisions about your life. Don’t give in to peer pressure, think for yourself and know the facts about the dangers of club drugs. Club drugs negatively impact your brain, body and relationships. Don’t be another statistic. HOW HARMFUL CAN SOMETHING BE… ...with a wonderful name like “Ecstasy?” Read on and find out! Ecstasy is made of the illegal substance methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA, which combines a powerful stimulant with a hallucinogen. The stimulant in Ecstasy is similar to methamphetamine and causes permanent damage to the brain. It forces the chemical serotonin, which controls moods and pain, to be released in huge, unusual amounts. This causes the neurons in your body that store serotonin to be deformed or destroyed, harming your body and brain. When Ecstasy wears off, the brain experiences a sudden lack of serotonin, which makes it hard to sleep, learn or remember. It also causes other nasty symptoms such as dehydration, nausea and paranoia. Ecstasy causes the body to release the chemical dopamine in large amounts as well. After Ecstasy leaves the body, the lack of dopamine can cause users to feel depressed and cranky. Ecstasy also causes hallucinations (imagined experiences that seem real). Having a hallucination is like leaving the real world, which can be terrifying. A user may hear voices, see things, or feel things
SOMEONE
ECSTASY? People who use Ecstasy are told that it will make them feel relaxed, excited or overjoyed. People may be told that they will feel closer to others, be in a better mood, or even that music will sound better. You may be told it will bring fun to your life, but it won’t. Ecstasy causes a type of depression where the user experiences an “out of control” feeling. The “high” feeling may last 6 hours, but the negative aftereffects may last 24 hours or more and are not worth the risk or harm. WHAT ARE THE STREET NAMES FOR ECSTASY? E, Love Drug, XTC, Rolls, Adam, Hug Drug, White Doves, New Yorkers, Clarity, Lover’s Speed. WHAT DOES ECSTASY LOOK LIKE? Ecstasy can come in a capsule or powder but it more often comes as a tablet. Tablets can be any color. Ecstasy tablets vary in strength and sometimes have a symbol on them. WHY WOULD
USE
is hyponatremia, a lack of balance between water and sodium in the body. Both of these conditions may result in painful side effects and possible death. LONG-TERM EFFECTS If a person continues to use Molly, it becomes harder to achieve a high. As the body builds up tolerance to the drug, users must take more and more to get the same effect. This cycle of higher dosages and increasing tolerance leads to addiction. Longterm addiction to any dangerous substance is devastating and ruins people’s lives. MDMA causes long-lasting damage to the brain’s serotonin system, which regulates the processing of information and emotions. Using this drug, even a few times, may result in permanent damage to one’s ability to learn, pay attention and remember. Users also suffer from difficulty sleeping and ongoing depression. LEGAL STATUS Molly is a Schedule drug. That means that it is absolutely illegal to sell, distribute, buy ingest, or even own it. It’s in the same legal category as heroin and LSD. No matter what you think about its safety or effects, If the psychological effects of using Molly don’t sound that bad to you, remember that a false sense of well-being can easily be your worst enemy. It causes you to overlook dangers that you would normally do your best to avoid, leading to injury to yourself and others. As with many other drugs, one of Molly’s greatest threats is what it can cause you to do while high on it. OvERDOSE Every drug carries the possibility of overdose. Because production is unregulated, you never really know if you are taking the amount of Molly that you planned on. If the dosage is too high, you will suffer extreme hallucinations, heart trouble, organ failure, and possibly immediate death. ONGOING CONSEqUENCES Users come down from a Molly high after about six hours, but the problems don’t stop there. After taking Molly, a user faces a high risk of hyperthermia, a dangerous increase in the body’s temperature. Another well-known effect
you risk serious fines, treatment program requirements, and even jail time by having anything to do with Molly. It’s just not worth the damage that a drug conviction would do to your future. FALSE hYpE One of the most dangerous things about Molly is the fact that so many people misrepresent its dangers. Well-known music stars include references to “Molly” in their songs, and by contrasting it with contaminated ecstasy, users try to convince young people that they have their safety in mind. Don’t be taken in by any claim that an illegal drug is safe—you can be 100% sure that it carries serious legal, health, and addiction consequences that will stretch far into the future... That is, if it does not kill you first. IMMEDIATE EFFECTS When a user introduces Molly to his or her system, its effects begin within 45 minutes. The drug causes the brain to artificially produce serotonin and dopamine, which alter consciousness, perception of surroundings, and mood. It is common for users to report having a false sense of calm, lowered anxiety levels, and a skewed view of the world around them. Molly also causes the user’s body to overact, causing high blood pressure, sweating, insomnia, and some very negative effects like nausea and uncontrollable teethgrinding. ongoing depression permanent damage If the dosage is too high, you will suffer extreme hallucinations, heart trouble, organ failure, and possibly immediate death. WHAT ARE HALLUCINOGENS?

SALVIA

Salvia is a plant that looks somewhat like mint and is native to southern Mexico. It is known for being the most potent naturally occurring hallucinogen, although its effects hit hard and fast but fade quickly. It can be ground up and smoked or made into a type of tea. It’s described as being similar to LSD in its effects.

Some other names include Maria Pastora, Sally-D, or diviner’s sage.

PCP

HALLUCINOGENS

the size of a grain of salt can cause hallucinogenic effects. Often LSD is sold on blotter paper, paper cut into tiny stamps in small tablets. Some common street names are acid, blotter acid, mellow yellow, or window panes.

PSILOCYBIN MUSHROOMS

Psilocybin are small brown hallucinogenic mushrooms found in the Americas and parts of Europe. These mushrooms often grow in manure. They are typically dried before being sold. Street names include magic mushrooms, shrooms, or simply mushrooms.

PEYOTE

Peyote is a cactus native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. The heads or “buttons” of the cactus are eaten, and are extremely bitter. Most people feel nauseated before they feel the hallucinogenic effects. Other names are green/black button, peyoto, or simply cactus.

Phencyclidine, or PCP, was tested in the 1950s as an anesthetic, but the mental affects were too upsetting to patients. Today it has no legitimate uses. PCP is both a hallucinogen and a stimulant, causing an intense, sped-up feeling. PCP may be a white, tan, or brown powder or a gummy blob. It is sold in capsules, powder, or liquid. Other names include angel dust, embalming fluid, or rocket fuel.

WHAT IS ALCOHOL?

Alcohol is a drug that contains the chemical ethanol, or ethyl alcohol. This chemical is produced through the fermentation (the breakdown of sugars without oxygen) of fruits such as grapes and apples, as well grains and starches such as potatoes and cereals. Examples of alcohols include:

Beer and malt liquor

Liquor (whiskey, vodka, etc.)

“Wine coolers”—fruit-flavored drinks

HOW DOES ALCOHOL WORK BIOLOGICALLY?

Alcohol is a depressant. It slows the function of the brain, numbs pain, makes the drinker sleepy, releases the brain’s

“feel-good” chemical dopamine and increases the level of opioid peptides. This results in a euphoric, happy state of mind that reduces anxiety. As a person drinks more, the central nervous system slows down dangerously. Over time, alcohol causes neuroadaptation — permanent changes in the brain that significantly harms a person.

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF DRINKING

• Slower reactions and poor coordination

• Heavy sweating

• Blurry or double vision

• Nausea and vomiting

• Lowered reasoning ability

• Doing or saying things you regret

• Lower heart rate

• Slowed breathing

• Anxiety, restlessness

• Mental confusion, memory loss

• Coma

• Death

LONG-TERM HEALTH CONSEQUENCES OF USING ALCOHOL

Long-term use of alcohol can wreck a person’s health. Alcohol can and will kill anyone who drinks too much or for too long.

Every effect of alcohol is more damaging in teenagers than it is in adults. This is because the brain does not stop developing until the mid-twenties, making younger people more likely to experience brain alteration.

In addition, most alcohol-related diseases progress more rapidly in women than in men. Heavy or long-term drinking causes irreversible, often fatal damage to the body including:

• Liver diseases

• Heart disease and stroke

• Brain cell death

• Cancer of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, breast, pancreas, liver, colon and rectum

• Decreased bone density

• Damage to eyes and skin

These individuals must drink more and more every day to experience the same effects they once felt. It is a true, severe addiction complete with painful withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, hallucinations and convulsions. The scariest part? It can happen

CENTER
Alcohol is the most commonly abused drug in the United States...don’t be another statistic. “ “ • Malnutrition and gastric illnesses • Sexual problems in men and women Alcohol will stunt your growth. It slows the rapid bone growth that occurs in young bodies and causes decreased bone density. Alcohol harms the liver so the body cannot absorb the calcium it needs to make your bones strong. In addition, women who are pregnant must not drink any alcohol, as it can be passed to the baby through the umbilical cord and seriously harm the child’s growth. Alcohol use during pregnancy is the #1 cause of nonhereditary mental retardation and causes lifelong hyperactive behavior, deformities and learning disabilities. ALCOHOLISM Alcohol is addictive. People who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age 21. 15.1 million American adults have an alcohol abuse problem. Alcoholism is a real and serious problem that worsens over time. Alcoholics continue to drink in spite of the real problems alcohol causes in their lives because they are mentally, emotionally, and physically dependent
to anyone. LEGAL CONSEQUENCES OF DRINKING ALCOHOL It is no wonder that alcohol is illegal for people under 21. It is a dangerous drug, the most abused substance in America and one of the most common addictions in the world. It is illegal for anyone to drive under the influence of alcohol because of the way it impairs the senses. For minors, penalties for buying, possessing or drinking alcohol include: • Juvenile detention • Probation • Fines up to several thousand dollars depending on the state and charge • Losing your driver’s license • Jail time • Mandatory alcohol rehabilitation AVOID ALCOHOL Alcohol causes more disease, destruction and death for teenagers than all illegal drugs combined. It is a highly addictive and dangerous substance that may seem fun, but has destroyed the lives of many. The smartest and healthiest choice to make is to choose not to drink alcohol. Alcohol Use is Epidemic use of marijuana, cocaine, and other illegal drugs has decreased, alcohol abuse by young people extremely high. About half of junior and senior high school students have used alcohol. More one-third report drinking alcohol weekly. Some are binge drinkers who report consuming fifteen or alcoholic drinks per week. These young drinkers are at high risk of becoming addicted to alcohol other drugs. Young People Drink Alcohol pressure is the most significant reason young people consume alcohol. The age at which peer is applied is younger than ever. Many seventh graders are subjected to the pressure to drink Some young people drink for the same reason adults do - to feel good. The Washington reported, twenty-five percent of young people who drink said they do so to get high, thirty-one reported drinking alone, and forty-one percent said they drink when they’re upset because it them feel better. Those who use alcohol alone or drink to counter bad feelings run a high risk of becoming alcoholics. Players: Parents parents say they’re relieved that their children use alcohol instead drugs. This a dangerous and harmful misconception. Changing attitudes and providing parents with the facts about alcohol drugs are the first steps in drug prevention. Concerned parents play a major role in educating children about drinking, drugs and must be realized that the fight against drugs begins at home clear rules, healthy values and a good example of drug-free living.

Marijuana is usually smoked, but some users mix marijuana into foods or use it to brew tea. The chemical in marijuana is THC. It changes the way the brain works. It gets in the way of learning. It destroys energy and wrecks emotions. Marijuana also contains other poisons and cancer-causing chemicals. The chemicals are stored in the user’s fat cells. Many marijuana users think the drug is not harmful. That is because they are too “stoned” and “loaded” to know the truth. Marijuana users develop tolerance. This means they need more and more marijuana to get high. Eventually, marijuana users experience “burnout.” They become lazy and they lose interest in life. Marijuana is smoked in cigarettes (known as “joints” or “nails”). It also smoked in pipes and “bongs.” It can also be used in tea and foods. Street names for marijuana include Pot, Herb, Weed, Boom, Mary Jane, Gangster, Chronic, and Bud. Stronger forms of marijuana are called Sinsemilla, Ganja, Hashish, and Hash Oil. Short-term effects of using marijuana include trouble with thinking and problem solving, changed senses of sight, hearing, and touch, increased heart rate, panic attacks, and coughing. Long-term effects of using marijuana include “burnout,” many colds, lung and mouth cancer, inability to have children, and permanent damage to thinking skills. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES CDC HEALTHY SCHOOLS INITIATIVE https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/ YOU CAN SAY NO It’s natural to want to fit in and to be “part of the crowd.” This may be easy for some people, while for others it takes more effort. Being “part of the crowd” isn’t always a good thing, though. Sometimes, when the crowd is doing something you know is wrong, you may feel pressure to join in. Others might try to convince you to drink alcohol, try drugs, tobacco or have sex, even if you don’t want to do any of those things. The good news is that you have the right to refuse to do those things! WHEN TO SAY NO Sometimes it can be hard to tell if “no” is the right answer, especially when you’re around lots of people and you want to feel included. This is when you have to be true to yourself and determine if the situation is really one you want to be part of. Does something about it make you uneasy or uncomfortable? If so, chances are that the right answer to whatever you’re being asked to do is “no.” PRACTICE YOUR REFUSAL SKILLS Saying “no” to your friends can be hard sometimes but knowing how to assert yourself can help you take control in difficult situations and avoid getting in trouble. Knowing what to say can help give you confidence to be yourself without fear of losing your friends. Remember: if they’re really your friends, they’ll respect your choices. It might not always be easy but surrounding yourself with friends who make good decisions will help you make good decisions, too. Don’t let someone talk you into doing something you don’t want to do.

HOSTING The statistics are startling and clear. By senior year, three out of every four high school students have consumed alcohol. Fifty percent of 12th graders and 20% of 8th graders have admitted to being drunk at least once. Underage drinking is a factor in 41% of teen automobile accidents and 32% of all teen driving deaths. Under-age drinking is the number one killer of young people and is directly linked to an estimated 5,000 deaths of people under 21 each year, as well as thou sands of other injuries. Teenagers naturally go to parties; parents naturally worry about their children’s safety. Some parents, in an attempt to control the situation, allow teens to hold underage drinking parties in their homes. This is called “Social Hosting” and in an increasing number of cities and states around the country, it’s illegal. Most states have a social hosting law which defines the legal consequences. Social Hosting is providing and/or serving alcohol to a young person who is under the minimum age of 21. Social hosting can take place in a party-like atmosphere or by any adult providing alcohol to teenagers and their peers for them to drink. It can even extend to parents and homeowners who are not on the premises and/or did not provide the alcohol.
Hosting parties for underage drinkers sends the message to teens that it’s okay to break the law. The mistaken idea is that you are providing a safe environment in which teens can drink, when actually there is no such thing as safe underage drinking. There is no way to predict how teens will behave while drinking. Injuries, assault, rape or alcohol poisoning may occur on your property, and you can be held criminally liable. to the pressure to drink alcohol. Some young people drink for the same reason adults do - to feel good. The Washington Post reported twenty-five percent of young people who drink said they do so to get high, thirty-one percent reported drinking alone, and forty-one percent said they drink when they’re upset because it made them feel better. Those who use alcohol alone or drink to counter bad feelings run a high risk of becoming alcoholics.

Key Players: Parents

Some parents say they’re relieved that their children use alcohol instead of other drugs. This a dangerous and harmful misconception. Changing passive attitudes and providing parents with the facts about alcohol and drugs are the first steps in drug prevention. Concerned parents must play a major role in educating children about drinking, drugs and driving. It must be realized that the fight against drugs begins at home with clear rules, healthy values and a good example of drug-free living.

In most states, it is illegal to sniff or be high from sniffing. It is also illegal to sell products to a minor for sniffing purposes. Check the laws in your state and inform your child. Inhalant users can be court-ordered to under-go treatment. Is Your Child Abusing Inhalants? Over 600 common products can be used as inhalants. Many are easily available to children, including gasoline, glue, paint, polishes, window cleaners, lighter fluid, correction fluid, felt tip markers and aerosols containing hair spray, deodorant, whipped cream, and air freshener. How Do Inhalants Affect The Body? Inhalants are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, affecting the brain, lungs, liver and kidneys. The resulting “high” can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. What Is Inhalant Abuse? Inhalant abuse is the act of sniffing or inhaling a substance in order to experience mind-altering effects. Fumes or vapors may be inhaled (code words: “bagging”, “huffing”) directly from containers, from inside plastic bags placed over the head, or from cloth or clothing saturated with the substance. Youth at Risk While the abuse of most drugs has declined over the last decade, the abuse of inhalants has increased. At least SEVEN MILLION CHILDREN between the ages of 5 and 17 have abused inhalants. Twenty-one percent of all 8th graders have experimented with some type of inhalant. Of these, 61% had used by grade 6. inhalant abuse seems to peak at age 13, but use of inhalants has been found in children as young as FIVE YEARS OLD. Death can occur when a user breathes too deeply and inhales enough chemical fumes to pass out. This may lead to asphyxiation and/or cardiac arrest. If the user inhales a substance out of a plastic bag, there is danger of death by suffocation. There is also a high rate of suicide and violent death among inhalant abusers.
