Disc Golf Comes To Alvin
Lighted disc golf course opens in Alvin Story by Joshua Truksa City and county officials joined dozens of disc golf enthusiasts from across the Houston area Jan. 8 to celebrate the opening of the much anticipated first fully lighted disc golf course in the entire country at Briscoe Park. “It’s the only course in the country designed with lights and we’re really, really excited to have that as an amenity,” Alvin Parks & Recreation Director Dan Kelinske said. Kelinske revealed at the opening ceremony that the course will receive a recognition award from the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) Parks and Natural Areas Committee. “We started this, believe it or not, about three years ago,” Councilman Gabe Adame said, before thanking his fellow councilmen and particularly City Manager Junru Roland. “It was his idea and he was really helping them champion the funding of this project through the use of our HOT tax money,” Adame said, referring to the hotel occupancy tax (HOT) revenue that was used to fund the project. By law, HOT revenue can only be used for furthering recreation and attractions. “I got to really tip my hat to the parks board for their vision Anthony Perkins takes a shot at the first tournament at Alvin’s for this over here at Briscoe Park,” Adame said, referring to new disc golf course Jan. 11.
