The Gray Clinic, Bishop Street Clinic and Pharmacy, Falls Highway Clinic, and both Pediatrics Clinics were all absorbed into the new Medical Campus to streamline operations and promote a collaborative healthcare environment. Grace Health’s Women’s Clinic is still open at 1019 Cumberland Falls Hwy. in Corbin, and other regional clinics can be found in the Pineville, London, Manchester, and Hyden communities. “Access is a pillar of Grace Health, and the Medical Campus represents that commitment,” said COO Jeff Campbell. “With availability in the evening and Saturday, the Medical Campus extends access for children and adults of all ages, and our pharmacy services ensure that patients have access to much needed resources at their convenience. This is an exciting time for both Grace Health and the community that we serve.” Beginning with a single clinic in the Gray community of Knox County in 2008, Grace Health has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 16 years. Now servicing more than 40,000 patients across a six-county service area, that growth is still taking place with the establishment of the new Medical Campus facility. Through it all, the ultimate goal remains the same… “The mission of Grace Health is to show the love and share the truth of Jesus Christ to Southeastern Kentucky through access to compassionate, high-quality, primary healthcare for the whole person,” explained CMO Kelly Evans. “Our mission statement is more than just words. We are striving daily to fulfill it in order to meet the needs of our patients and community in all of the services that we provide.”

We’re dedicated to caring for our patients, building relationships, and providing quality dental services for the whole family. With each smile, we’re contributing to a healthier community—one dental visit at a time!” -Dr. Kayla Fields, DMD Welcome Dr. Gibson… Dr. Keith Gibson, a long-time Corbin dentist, joined the medical campus in early January. Dr. Gibson has over three decades of experience. Upon joining Grace Health, he shared, “I am excited to be working with Grace Health Dental and look forward to serving the people of Southeastern Kentucky with high-quality dental care. Most importantly, though, I am honored to be able to use the gifts God has given me to share the love of Jesus Christ with my patients.” BEHAVIORAL HEALTH— “We take great pride in serving southeastern Kentucky with dedicated Behavioral Health providers. person. This vision, shared by me and the entire Grace Health team, has driven our commitment to enhancing Behavioral Health services. In the past year alone, we have successfully added 20 skilled Behavioral Health care providers and support coordinators to our team. The most recent addition was Jody Del Toro, PMHNP, our second psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) at the Medical Campus. We eagerly anticipate further growth and remain dedicated to expanding access to Behavioral Health services for our community in the future.” -Brooke Nipper, LPCC

PEDIATRICS— “As pediatric providers, we are delighted to offer comprehensive pediatric care at this new facility. By incorporating the accessibility of lab and X-ray services into our collective 127 years of pediatric experience, we have become a ‘onestop shop.’ We are committed to delivering the same superior and consistent care you have come to expect, and we sincerely appreciate the trust you have placed in us to care for your children. We hope you share our excitement about the new building!” -Dr. Christina Butler, MD, FAAP

A familiar face… Diana Stanley, LPCC-S, joined Grace Health in July 2023 as their first pediatric behavioral health counselor. For many years, she served as a school-based therapist in Whitley County. She now sees patients between the ages 4-17 at the Medical Campus.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH— “At Grace Health Community Programs, we aspire to be more than just a healthcare provider; we are a movement dedicated to enhancing the lives of everyone in Southeastern Kentucky. We firmly believe that health encompasses not only physical well-being but also social and emotional connections. Hence, we make it our mission to reach out to as many people as possible, regardless of their life stage—whether they are in school, at work, or attending the local fair.”

PHARMACY— “At the Grace Health Medical Campus Pharmacy, our mission is to demonstrate the love of Jesus and compassionately take care of every individual that comes into our pharmacy. We strive daily to meet the needs of each patient, firmly believing that cost should never serve as a barrier to healthcare or medication. The resources our pharmacy provides to help those facing financial hardships have benefited numerous patients. Having personally witnessed the positive impact of this assistance on patient outcomes and overall health, I can attest to its significance.” -Kayla Prewitt, PharmD

We eagerly anticipate further growth and remain dedicated to expanding access to Behavioral Health services for our community in the future.

CHAMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT The OTG Way: Owner talks overcoming adversity and building a successful brand

M

ike Caffrey, owner and operator of Old Town Grill in London, Corbin and Tazewell, Tenn., has a lifetime of experience in the restaurant business. “I’ve been doing this for 39 years,” Caffrey said recently. “I started when I was 15-years-old when I walked to the Shoney’s® down the street from where I lived and got a dishwashing job.” Caffrey worked his way up from that job in the dish room, eventually becoming a divisional director for Shoney’s® with eight different locations under his command. He also spent time with Longhorn Steakhouse®, and he owned five Reno’s Roadhouse® locations before he and his business partner, Brian Carpenter, eventually founded Old Town Grill in the mid-2000s. “OTG started in Tazewell in 2004,” Caffrey explained. “In 2011, we had the opportunity to purchase the London location. We spent a lot of time in those two restaurants honing our craft and developing the brand. We have had a lot of success.” Thanks to that success, Caffrey and company were able to open a third location, in Corbin, in the Story and photos by Trevor Sherman

fall of 2015. “Corbin has been great for us,” Caffrey said. “We have built a very loyal customer base there.” Offering their award-winning burgers, steaks, seafood, specialty sandwiches and everything in between, the OTG family has worked hard over the past twenty years to earn a reputation as “the place to be.” The road hasn’t always been an easy one, though. Caffrey’s son, Michael, tragically passed away in early 2023. It was a tough blow in more ways than one. “He was my best friend,” Caffrey said of his son. “My plan was to turn the restaurants over to him and his brother, Matthew. Mikey had been with me since day one, though. He opened the restaurants with me, and helped develop many of the items on the menu. He was a very vital piece to this business.” Describing the loss as “devastating,” Caffrey said that, while it has been a difficult journey, time has brought the family to a point where they can now spend less energy grieving Michael’s passing and

Winter 2024 — Strictly Business 11

instead find joy in celebrating his life and accomplishments. “He’s not here, but in a way, it’s like he still is,” Caffrey said. Moving forward, Caffrey said that OTG plans to continue growing, and continue focusing on new and exciting ways that the restaurant group can serve the members of its three individual communities. You will see OTG at local festivals, such as NIBROC in downtown Corbin and the Chicken Festival in London. They continue to stay busy with catering jobs, and they are proud to present special events throughout the year like cornhole tournaments and chicken wing eating competitions. One major event each summer is the OTG Challenge, which takes place at the London restaurant. It is a talent competition where singers have the opportunity to showcase their talents, gain valuable exposure, and win some cash in the process. Now in its tenth year of existence, Caffrey is proud to say that many former contestants have gone on to make their mark in the music world by releasing popular songs online.

“At the end of the day, we serve food,” Caffrey said. “But we also want to broaden that by creating events that make people want to come here. It’s extra work, and it’s hard work, but it is also worth it in the end.” Caffrey credits his early years in the corporate restaurant world with helping to prepare him for the many hats that he must now wear every day as an independent business owner. However, nothing could have prepared him, or any other small business owner for that matter, for the trials of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. “Things are not the same post-COVID as they were pre-COVID,” Caffrey said. “There is much more carryout business now. The world has changed.” Caffrey recalled the difficult days of government-mandated shutdowns, and the steps that he and his business partner took to ensure that employees would be taken care of. Looking back, he now considers much of the hardship to have been a blessing in disguise. “We were very aggressive in pushing our curbside and to-go services,” Caffrey said of the early days of the pandemic. “It ended up paying huge dividends for us, as all of that has kind of morphed into things like Uber Eats, Door Dash and our own online ordering service. We have used those things to grow our business, so in hindsight, it actually made us better.” “As an independent restaurant, nobody is going to come in here and rescue us,” Caffrey con-

Lifelong passion to start business fulfilled with Martin’s Sports Apparel

ports. Some people love them, some people get crazy over them and some people just like to use them as a temporary escape. Regardless of the varying level of sports fans that exist, there’s one thing that many of them have in common: they like to rep their favorite team on their clothing. Martin’s Sports Apparel has been helping people in the region do just that for nearly eight years. After working for almost four decades at a local business, Terry Joe Martin was looking for something to do when he entered retirement. According to Martin, making custom apparel was something he’d dabbled in while still working his 9 to 5 job, but he never

really had the time to put more energy toward it. And while it was something he had just done in his spare time before, Martin said it was a “lifelong passion” and “a dream” of his to start a business such as Martin’s Sports Apparel. Martin also described himself as a “people person,” as he enjoys having the opportunity to meet new people. For those reasons, once the opportunity to do so was available to him, he went headlong into the venture. “I started out very small, but I’ve managed to grow every year,” said Martin. “I felt like there was a need to offer our schools and our church groups a better price than what they had

If you’re in search of trophies or plaques, Martin’s Sports Apparel has a diverse selection of those as well, which can all also be customized. Martin operates Martin’s Sports Apparel out of his home, which he has done since starting the business. And while the business has continued to thrive as the types of orders Martin often fulfills has ballooned, he says its not only still feasible to keep doing at his home, but its also what he feels is best for his customers. “With today’s technology, I don’t need to carry a ton of inventory. Most items I can get within one or two days of ordering them, so I don’t need a lot of storage space to stock inventory,” said Martin. “That’s one reason why my prices are so good and why I feel I can save customers a considerable amount of money. Obviously, since I don’t have the overhead of a brick-and-mortar business, I am able to offer very competitive prices on the products that I handle,” said Martin. “In reducing my overhead, I’m able to pass those savings on to the customers.” Right now, Martin doesn’t formally have any employees, doing a large amount of the work himself and with help from his wife and son. However, Martin noted that his business has expanded to the point where he is seriously considering bringing on some employees to help manage the workload. With Martin’s Sports Apparel seeing year-over-year growth since its inception, Martin is hopeful that he can continue to sustain that success as he keeps looking to expand the business. That desire is both for the community that he serves and his business itself, which he hopes will carry on for many more years to come, even after he decides to possibly step away from it.

“I can’t continue to do it forever. I know that. But I have an incentive to grow the business. My son is a school teacher and some day he’ll be retiring. If I can continue to grow the business, it’ll be good business to pass on to him,” said Martin. Martin’s Sports Apparel works with a wide customer base, including schools, churches, non-profit groups, businesses and individuals. Martin said he typically does bulk orders that have a larger volume of items, but that he often takes orders for just one or two things at a time also. Customers will get the best price per item when ordering in large quantities, however. Anyone interested in learning more about the products Martin’s Sports Apparel carries or information regarding orders and pricing, contact Martin at 606.524.6266. Martin said both calls and text messages are welcome.

Kulisek said that a lot of energy and resources have gone into upgrading the hotel in recent years, including new flooring, fresh coats of paint, updated lighting and new furniture in the rooms. One unique change has been the replacing of the wall art inside all guest rooms. Instead of prints that you might find at any other hotel facility, you will instead find artistic photos of various points of interest in our local area. More updates are planned for the near future, Kulisek explained, including new windows that are

Phipps said that she hopes to see the area off of Exit 29 continue to grow and develop, as it will bring more new people into North Corbin. As a handicap accessible facility with 91 rooms, including several impressive suites, she said that the Corbin Baymont Inn and Suites team looks forward to continuing to serve visitors with their special brand of local hospitality for many more years to come.
