Feature Story Lunar New Year by DANIEL ROMERO
L
unar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, stands as the most significant celebration in China and among Chinese communities worldwide. Ever wondered how to wish someone a "Happy New Year" in Chinese? Well, it depends on who you're talking to. In China, where Mandarin is the official language, one would extend wishes with "Gong xi fa cai," literally translating to "wishing you to be prosperous in the coming year." However, in many overseas Chinese communities where Cantonese is prevalent, the greeting shifts to "Gung hay fat choy," conveying "wishing you great happiness and prosperity." The festivity spans two weeks and is marked by family reunions, feasts, fireworks, and vibrant parties and parades. Steeped in over 3,000 years of history, Chinese New Year marks the commencement of a new year in the Chinese lunisolar calendar. This ancient calendar combines lunar and solar elements, with months commencing on each new moon. The new year initiates on the new moon closest to the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, typically falling between January 21 and February 20. While China adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1912, the late 20th century saw the re-introduction of the holiday as the "Spring Festival." Lunar New Year, though lacking a set program, associates specific rituals and festivities with particular days. Delve into some highlights below and explore the significance of sumptuous foods

linked to the celebration in the Questions tab. Preceding the official commencement of the holiday, Chinese households undergo a thorough cleaning, symbolizing the removal of the previous year's bad luck. The days leading up to Chinese New Year witness vibrant red decorations adorning businesses and homes—a tradition symbolizing joy and good fortune. The Lunar New Year celebrations kick off with the traditional "reunion dinner," where families gather to express hopes for the upcoming year. Throughout the festival, common celebrations include parties, firecrackers, and the renowned lion dance. The initial days may see younger family members receiving red envelopes filled with money, known as hong bao (Mandarin) or lai see (Cantonese), traditionally given to unmarried adults and children. The third day tends to be quieter and more somber, with superstitions cautioning against visiting friends or family. Instead, this day is reserved for honoring deceased relatives. The seventh day often recognizes renri, celebrating the creation of human beings, while the ninth day marks the birthday of the Jade Emperor in Taoist belief. The enchanting Lantern Festival brings the Lunar New Year to a close, featuring paper lanterns guiding the way for lion dances, parades, and festivals. These lanterns, symbolizing the first full moon after the Lunar New Year, are associated with guiding lost souls' homes and were crafted by monks to honor Buddha.

in chocolate sales. It is not surprising that chocolate, with its reputation as an aphrodisiac, is a favorite gift on Valentine’s Day. Celebrating love and romance, one legend says the holiday is named for a martyred Roman priest who secretly performed marriage ceremonies in defiance of Emperor Claudius 11 who believed unmarried men made better soldiers. Modern science tells us that chocolate is a natural mood booster. At the time of the Mayans, Cacao beans were valuable in Central America and were used as currency. Four beans bought a pumpkin and ten a rabbit. Columbus was the first European to taste chocolate, on his fourth and last voyage to the New World in 1502. He was not impressed but eventually others were. Once available only to royalty, chocolate eventually found its way into middle-class houses. Billat-Savarin recommended it as a cure for lethargy and even hangovers. “People who habitually drink chocolate enjoy unvarying health and are least attacked by a host of little illnesses which can destroy the true joy of living.” Consumed for the mildly stimulating effect of its caffeine, as well as its taste, it was served in liquid form until the art of solidifying it was perfected in the 19th century. Americans on average eat almost twelve pounds a year, but the United States ranks only eighth in the world. Switzerland leads with more than twenty pounds per person. Chocolate has around ten grams of fat per ounce, but of a kind that does not add to cholesterol. For those in need of a further excuse to eat chocolate, dark chocolate has fifteen times the antioxidants found in broccoli.
alentine’s Day makes me think of romance but most of all chocolates. As of 2024, the global chocolate industry is worth $127.9 billion USD. Many people overlook the power of global chocolate consumption, but from boosting your mood to making the perfect gift, chocolate plays a key role in all our lives. With the ever-expanding interest in specialty chocolates, it is not surprising that the world chocolate industry is projected to continue growing by billions each year. So, for those wondering whether to support your local chocolate maker, check out these statistics. 1. The most popular time of day to eat chocolate is in the evening. 2. Annual global chocolate consumption in 2022 was roughly 7.5 million tons. 3. Online chocolate shopping now accounts for 40% of consumer behavior. 4. In 2021, sales of premium chocolates grew 23% over the three years prior. 5. 49% of Americans prefer milk chocolate. 6. Americans spend an average of $144.90 on chocolate, per capita. 7. Three of the five biggest chocolate manufacturers in the world are American. 8. Chocolate accounts for 59% of all candy sales in the US, as of 2018. 9. In the US, milk chocolate only needs to contain 10% cacao paste. 10. Europe is the largest chocolate market, with $45 billion

onsider the plight of our feathered friends, each weighing less than two nickels, as they endure the harshness of winter. Recognizing February as a particularly challenging month for birds, John Porter, Illinois’ 10th District Congressman, initiated National Bird Feeding Month in 1994. This month serves as a call to action, urging people in cold regions with limited natural resources to provide food, water, and shelter for wild birds. Bird feeding has evolved into one of the most popular hobbies among Americans, with approximately 59 million enthusiasts, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey results. This hobby not only supplies essential resources to birds but also offers additional environmental benefits. The beauty of bird feeding lies in its simplicity and affordability – a basic bird feeder and a bag of seeds are all you need to begin. However, for many, interest deepens as they familiarize themselves with the diverse bird species in their vicinity. Looking to actively participate this month? Here are some suggestions: Purchase a Feeder: Whether it's your first or an addition to your collection, a new bird feeder will delight your feathered friends. Perky-Pet® offers a variety of options, from window feeders to squirrel-resistant feeders. Provide a Water Source: Water is as crucial as food, especially when natural sources freeze in February. Use a waterer (change it regularly or bring it indoors at night) or add a heater to a birdbath

contemporary element to the traditional celebrations, blending historical reflection with consumer enthusiasm. In recent years, there has been a growing trend of using Presidents’ Day as a day of service. Community service initiatives and volunteer projects are organized across the country, encouraging citizens to give back to their communities in the spirit of the leaders being honored. This shift reflects a desire to connect the holiday with the values of public service and civic re-
s the United States commemorates Presidents’ Day on February 19, 2024, citizens nationwide unite to honor the legacies of the country’s past leaders. Celebrated on the third Monday of February each year, this federal holiday pays tribute to the birthdays of George Washington, the first President of the United States, and Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President. Presidents’ Day extends beyond being just a day off for many; it serves as an occasion for reflection on the enduring principles that have shaped the nation, thanks to these visionary leaders. Originally established in 1885 to honor George Washington’s birthday, Presidents’ Day later evolved to include recognition of Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday also falls in February. Over the years, the observance has grown to celebrate all U.S. presidents, acknowledging their pivotal roles in shaping the nation’s history and guiding it through various challenges. Americans mark Presidents’ Day with diverse celebrations and activities, from small towns to bustling cities, including parades, historical reenactments, and educational events. These gatherings offer citizens a valuable opportunity to connect with their nation’s history. Presidents’ Day has also become synonymous with retail sales and special deals. Consumers can seize discounts on various items, from home appliances to clothing, as retailers capitalize on the long weekend to attract shoppers. This modern twist adds a

Schools often incorporate lessons about the nation’s presidents, fostering a deeper understanding of their roles in American history. Museums and historical sites also play a crucial role in educating the public about the impact of presidential leadership on the nation’s development. As the nation observes Presidents’ Day in 2024, it is a time to reflect on the leadership, vision, and sacrifices of those who have held the highest office in the land. Whether through historical reenactments, community service, or educational initiatives, Americans from all walks of life come together to celebrate the enduring ideals that continue to shape the United States. Presidents’ Day serves as a reminder that, despite the challenges and changes over the years, the legacy of leadership remains a cornerstone of the nation’s identity.

s I sit here in our apartment's living room, basking in the first sight of the sun this year, I'm reminded of such moments in Houston and Sweetgrass. Surprisingly, even with the sun casting its warm glow on our complex of 12 buildings, I can spot fog lingering just a block away. Chongqing, often referred to as the city of fog, experiences over 200 days of fog. While Dave found himself enveloped in fog last Saturday, I took the opportunity to explore a sun-kissed "old city" nestled by the rivers — Shibati. Shibati is over 3000 years old, with its roots tracing back 800 years to the Song Dynasty. This area once served as a pivotal economic and strategic center for Chongqing, with its streets interwoven among the structures that have stood for eight centuries. The name Shibati translates to 18, symbolizing the 18 sets of steps descending from the top of the street to the well near the river. Due to the constraints of my knees, I opted for the convenience of the escalator whenever possible. In the early 1900s, Shibati played a crucial role as a strategic war defense area. The conflicts between the Japanese and Chinese forces, the feuding Communist groups, and World War II wreaked havoc on the region, necessitating a complete reconstruction. Unlike many post-World War II cities that embraced modern architecture, the decision was made to restore Shibati to its historical roots. Today, while the structures retain their traditional charm, businesses thrive with modernity. The escalators are seamlessly integrated to preserve the essence of old China. Skepticism about Shibati's authenticity, especially after visiting buildings from 1307 and 1410 that still stand, quickly dissipated as I immersed myself in the genuine flavor of the ancient city. s sub-freezing temperatures approach, it's essential to be well-prepared. Here's a quick checklist to help you stay warm and secure during the chilly days:

•
Battery-powered flashlights and/or lanterns with extra batteries Battery-powered radio External cell phone batteries Drinking water Non-perishable food items (including supplies for your pets) First-aid kit Extra blankets and/or sleeping bags Layered clothing (more effective than single large coats) Prescription drugs Portable lithium battery power station (if available) Entertainment items (books, board games, cards, etc.) Ensure your vehicle's fuel tank is full Contact information for multiple preferred contractors (e.g., plumber)
Tips for Outside the Home • • • • • • • • •

• •
Chimney inspection and cleaning Check batteries on smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and thermostats Seal cracks or openings to prevent pests from seeking shelter indoors Seal around windows and doors; close blinds/curtains Open cabinets to allow circulation around pipes Allow a slow trickle of water through the faucets Locate the home’s main water shut-off valve If unable to prevent pipes from freezing, or if you'll be away for an extended period, consider draining your water pipes Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature, day and night, no lower than 55 degrees, even if the home will be unoccupied
• • • • • • •
Bring your pets indoors Never attempt to thaw a pipe with an open flame; consider using a hair dryer with caution as a heat source If pipes burst, immediately shut off the water supply Never operate a generator, camp stove, charcoal grill, gasoline, or propane heater indoors Avoid heating a home using a stovetop or oven Keep generators outside at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and vents Space heaters are a leading cause of home heating fires and deaths Unless it's an emergency, stay off the roads Check on your neighbors

That's Entertainment That’s a wrap! Once again, That’s Entertainment completes a year of providing 26 wonderful cultural arts events to our Del Web resident members. A recap of our year: • January 2023 at Jones Hall with a tribute to Elton John and Billy Joel, followed a few weeks later by Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. • February brought us to the Harlem Dance Company, then the Best of Broadway. • March off to the ballet Romeo and Juliet, the Brahms Dvorak symphony, and a week later the music of Cole Porter. A change of pace as we delighted in a delicious dinner, then the performance by Texas Hill at Dosey Doe • April we were mesmerized by the Opera Tosca, then a lighter touch with The Play That Goes Wrong! • May brought us to one of our favorites, Patsy Cline at Dosey Doe. Then the music of Dolly Parton and back to the symphony for Tchaikovsky. • June we couldn’t resist the Texas Tenors at the Grand Opera in Galveston! We moved on to the theatre for Servants of Two Masters. • July brought the music of Bobby Darrin then we moved on to barrels of laughter with Present Laughter. • August, we brought it back home to the Lakehouse as Cyrus presented a film he produced, “Rembrandt”. We finished off the month enjoying the play Always Patsy Cline; one of our all-time favorites. • September brought us to an experience like no other. MOMIX! • October, another all-time favorite, Forever Plaid. An impressive symphony written by none other than Duke Ellington entranced us! • November, a once of lifetime concert by the Vienna Boys Choir. Off to the Museum of Fine Arts for a splendid exhibit from the Arm and Hammer Collection. And how we could stay seated while we listened to the music of the Divas! •
December, we capped off the year with Texas Carol. And the highlight of our year, the Holiday Party at the Lakehouse. A delicious dinner catered by Cilli followed by an amazing performance by Margaret Epps and Ron Ellis. The year was bittersweet as we said goodbye to our Treasurer Hilda Pena as she moved to another community. We thank her for her great years of service. Nancy Bravman and Michelle Chavez finished their term, we appreciate all their hard work. We welcome new Board Members, Kay Steinkamp, Susan Brancheau and Shirley Keeney. For information about our club, contact Cyrus Bharucha at bharuchacy@gmail.com or Valerie Kavalewitz, veliak@ yahoo.com.
