DJ brings unique station to lake area By Jeffrey Westbrook

A new sound has arrived at Smith Mountain Lake. James “Big Jim” Shively has moved closer to the lake from Rocky Mount, bringing his radio studio with him. Some local radio listeners may already be familiar with the DJ. His Outsider Radio at call sign WBJR – Big Jim Radio – has been streaming around the world via the internet for the past couple of years. He also hosts a syndicated radio show called Big Jim’s Big Jamz. Soon, Big Jim Radio also will be heard on the airwaves. He is in the process of acquiring and putting up a small, low power (part 15 AM transmitter) antenna as a community radio station, which will broadcast at AM 1610. What sets Shively’s station and his syndicated show apart from much of the rest of today’s broadcasts is its focus on “deep cuts” of music from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s (and to some extent, the 90s). “Our theme is mostly retro, not huge hits, but underrated songs,” Shively explained. He gives priority to songs that may not receive much airtime or notice but deserve it. “We play mixed genres, a lot of retro deep cuts from the 1960s up to the 90s: 60s and 70s rock, some classic hits, 70s funk, glam rock from the 80s, blues, a little bit of everything,” he added. Another unique feature of Shively’s broadcasts is the expansive playlists. Rather than playing the same limited number of songs repeatedly, he pulls from a vast storehouse of songs — he has amassed four terabytes of music. “There are a lot of iHeartRadio shows out there that play the same few songs over and over,” he said, adding that his

station is not like that. Shively got his start in radio first at WQMR in Rocky Mount, then at WROE Radio Free Roanoke, and later at WYTI in Rocky Mount. He wants to acknowledge these stations for helping him begin in the industry. “I want to give them all a big shoutout,” he stated. After four years of working with these stations, he bought the software to automate a radio program and launched his own show, and in 2018, he began broadcasting his station online. “The sound is as good as or better than a lot of FM stations because of the good quality software we use,” he said. Given these qualities, the online broadcasts — which run 24/7 — have gained a worldwide following. “We have listeners around the globe, but especially in the Smith Mountain Lake/Rocky Mount/Roanoke area,” he said. During the night in the U.S., the station gains an audience from overseas, from locations such as Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Spain and Portugal. “We play a lot of international bands, which may account for some of that global audience,” Shively said. The local DJ grew up in Ferrum before moving to Nashville, where he spent 20 years working in and around the music industry as a roadie, producer, session musician and band member. He went to school for producing albums. “As a roadie, I got to hang out with a lot of 80s rock stars,” he reminisced. He also played and toured as the bass player (and mandolin and guitar player) in the band Across Tundras and has re-

leased some solo work under the name Big Jim Shively. Looking ahead to the return of events and live music, Shively has plans for his mobile studio. “I want to get more involved once things settle down and get back to normal — in events around the lake — bring a booth, have battle of the bands, do more interviews. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot going on right now.” He recently purchased signage for his studio from the Moneta shop SML Signs & More, which he recommends as “better and cheaper than Vistaprint,” an online printing company. Big Jim’s Big Jamz can be heard on WQMR (101.3 FM) in Rock Mount and on Radio Free Roanoke, WROE (95.7 FM). Outsider Radio, a part of the Live365 online radio network, can be found on the internet at wbjrradio.weebly.com and wbjr.mystrikingly. com. The station can be heard on the Live365 app on smart TV or smart phones, as well. For questions or radio requests, call WBJR at (757) 524-1515 or email bigjimsbigjamz@gmail.com.

Lisa Floyd, one of the most recognizable artists in the Smith Mountain Lake area, has always had a passion for her work. Known as a fine and commercial artist. Floyd has been known around the area for painting interior murals for local businesses, churches, schools, etc. Although murals are her favorite style of art, she isn’t limited to what she can create. “I do anything you can do with art,” she said. Some of these include canvases, signs and portraits. Although she has created art her entire life, her career actually began when she was just 15. Floyd was born and raised in Silicon Valley, California, and right down the road from her home was a small deli. The owner was looking for someone to create the logo for his deli and asked Floyd if she would be interested, to which she agreed. It wasn’t long after that offers from other businesses came to Floyd to help create logos, signs, etc. This is when she realized she could make a living doing this. That winter, Floyd and her father were at a small ice-cream shop when they noticed an 80-year-old man named Gus painting on the ice-cream store windows for Christmas. She said her father told her she should go over and see if she could help him. Floyd agreed, and it was that little encounter that led her to help Gus paint windows at 10 different businesses during the Christmas season. Floyd credits Gus for helping her learn so much about window painting. Floyd then had the idea to go from one business to the next at strip malls and other locations see if they would like to have windows or signs painted for $25. “I was young and didn’t have a portfolio at the time,” Floyd said. “This is literally how I got my career started.” One of the businesses she actually painted windows for was McDonald’s, in which Floyd painted the 12 days of Christmas with the McDonald characters. Little did Floyd realize, that wouldn’t be the last time she would paint windows for a major corporation — far from it, actually. Floyd enjoyed it so much, she went to other major corporations to see if she could provide the same services. When Floyd got married and started a family in Florida back in 1988, that is when things took off for her art career, as she traveled around the state of Florida to paint windows and signs of other major corporations at their request. “I had every McDonald’s, every Wendy’s, every Burger King, every Taco Bell, and every Goodyear asking me to paint their windows,” Floyd said. Depending on the weather, Floyd and her family painted windows for 10 to 20 stores a day. Soon afterward, Floyd’s window painting for major corporations expanded from the state of Florida to the southeast and whole eastern half of the United States. Back in 2010, when Wendy’s decided to test out breakfast, the corporation contacted Floyd and told her they were interested in having her paint signs on their windows to advertise their breakfast. “They told me we got 350 stores for you to do in a nine-state area from Virginia and up north,” Floyd said.

Lisa Floyd is one of Smith Mountain Lakes most recognizable artists. She is shown with her husband Dale.

From there, Floyd went state to state and Wendy’s to Wendy’s to paint signs on their windows, and she loved every minute of it, considering she had doing that type of work for 30 years. “That was my bread and butter,” Floyd said. After traveling through the entire eastern United States, Floyd and her family decided to settle down near Smith Mountain Lake. Her passion for art didn’t die at the lake; rather, it blew up. One of Floyd’s most recognizable pieces of work is the SML map, which shows the entire lake with businesses and other locations painted on it. To this day, it was one of her most challenging and favorite pieces of art that she has done. Her motivation to do it was, in a way, fate meant to be. Around the time Floyd and her family decided to settle down near SML was also when major corporations such as McDonald’s and Wendy’s stopped doing window paint. This left Floyd with much more time on her hands to do fine art. Then the SML map project began for her. “I saw somebody post on Facebook that they had saw a map of SML in a doctor’s office in Roanoke, and I thought to myself that the map is 16 years old, it no longer represents us, and someone needs to do a new one,” she said. That someone was Floyd herself. The project was a rigorous task, as it involved Floyd going to every visitor-related business around the lake and working with the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce to make sure she got every business that could be represented on the map. After months of working on the map, Floyd finished it, and what followed next still amazes her. Since its creation in 2018, about 2,300

Lake Life 2020 |

copies of the map have sold. Floyd also converted her map into a 1,000-piece puzzle, which has sold around 2,000 copies and has become more popular in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Floyd also said any business around the lake that sells SML merchandise carries the maps and puzzles on the shelves as well. She also noted she was humbled and ecstatic to see the map being embraced by the whole lake community. She feels it has helped unify the lake community by being proud of where they live and all it has to offer. While this may be her favorite project, Floyd has created other artwork around Franklin and Bedford counties. The most recognizable ones are the interior murals. These murals are Floyd’s favorite type of artwork, and she does them with her husband Dale Floyd’s help. The murals average one to three days to create and are in businesses, churches, schools, libraries and more. Floyd hopes to be able to do more exterior murals, as she believes it can be a major selling point for tourists. “There’re 50 murals of mine in restaurants, public spaces and homes that have my work, but it’s all inside,” Floyd said. “We could literally be a mural town right now if all of those were outside. People would come here just to see the murals.” Floyd also enjoys doing commissions for people to help create their visions and put them into art form. She noted that it’s always been a joy of hers to see people enjoy their vision come to life in a form of art.

Painting is still Floyd’s bread and butter, but it’s not from windows anymore. Instead it’s now regular house paintings around SML, which she takes referrals on. It’s another one of many art projects Floyd can do to help bring people’s thoughts to life, which brings her joy. “I like to be other people’s hands for their vision,” Floyd said. Contributed

Sports Spotlight: Spinner brought positive energy to SRHS baseball team By William Seidel

For the Staunton River High School (SRHS) baseball team, there was a lot of potential for a great season that featured the highest expectation a high school team can set: a state title. The Golden Eagles fell just short of the state tournament last year after a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Abingdon in the 3D baseball semifinal matchup. Then juniors Eddie Blake and Collin Bates combined to throw a one hitter against the Falcons, but two errors by the Golden Eagles in the first inning that led to the only run of the game being scored was enough to bury SRHS state tournament hopes. The Golden Eagles were returning five seniors and moving up a talented junior class, and they all will tell anyone that they had the pieces in place to make a run this year. One of those seniors who believed they had as a good a shot as anybody to win it all was Christian Spinner, who was expected to be a major contributor for the Golden Eagles. “I feel like we had a great shot at state this year,” Spinner said. “Everyone on the team had great talent, and everyone wanted to be there (practice and workouts). This season would’ve been great.” SRHS baseball coach Brian Divers was expecting big things from Spinner, who was on his second year playing varsity and was slated to play first-base this past year and hit in the heart of the lineup. “Christian was a player that was going to fit in at first base this year because he has really good hands and feet,” Divers said. “He had

worked really hard the last couple of years and paid his dues. He had a really good offseason, and his preseason was going really well. We were looking for him to bat in the middle of the lineup and drive in runs for us.” For Spinner, he started playing T-ball at the age of 5 and started playing travel ball at the age of 10 until he was 12. Spinner then decided to stick with playing baseball for the middle and high school teams. Though he didn’t see much playing time during high school, Spinner was not someone who was going to give up. Instead he decided to put his head down and continue to work harder at his craft on the field and in the batter’s box. In the process of improving his skills, Spinner made sure he was there to contribute to the team anyway he could and to always support his teammates. His hard work didn’t go unnoticed, especially this year — just ask his now former teammates about how hard he worked. “Christian busted his butt off in the offseason this year. He was a vacuum in the infield this year, and at the plate, he was hitting the ball very consistently,” said Blake, who played varsity all four years at SRHS and will be continuing his baseball career at Concord University. He also mentioned that Spinner was a teammate any player loves to be around, stating that he was always very supportive and positive all the time. Bates, another teammate, said that Spinner was a lot better than what his playing time showed, and the reason for that was the depth and experience that the baseball team had at the positions that Spinner normally played, but he still made the best out of it. Bates also noted that Spinner is the type of player that every team needs and gave examples. “Every time I went up to bat, he’d hype me up and just get me ready to bat. If we were having a bad game, he’d get us all up again and helped us get back into the game just from the energy he brought,” Bates said. He mentioned how Spinner was the type who kept the team loosened up by joking around a lot but made sure the team was serious and ready to work when needed. Bates said that Spinner was going to play a lot this year and knows he would have been a key piece to their success. “He would’ve been one of the key players this year,” Bates said. “He was one of the guys we needed on the team.” Divers acknowledged that not a lot of players have that mindset if they don’t see a lot of playing time, but that’s what makes Spinner the type of player he wants on his team. “I love players like Christian,” Divers said. “We could

SEVEN

have lost him a few years ago because he wasn’t getting the playing time, but he stuck with it, worked hard, supported his team, and continued to get better. Christian was the type of player that every team needs. He has been a team-first guy for a long time.” For Spinner, quitting wasn’t even an option, as he loved to play the game of baseball too much to just give it up that easily. Instead, he made sure to go to almost every workout and training session that he could. If that meant staying in the batting cages longer than usual, he did it; if that meant taking in a few more ground balls than usual in the infield, he did it; if that meant staying longer in the weight room or conditioning longer than usual, he did it. Plain and simple, whatever Spinner had to do to make himself better, he did it without hesitation. He had the mentality of first-one-there and last-one-to-leave. He wanted to make sure he was going to be a major contributor for his team. Spinner put a lot of responsibility on himself to improve, but he also depended a lot on his now former head coach to help him take those next steps. He credits Divers a lot for how far he has come as a player, mentioning that he just has that factor as a coach to get the best out of his players. “Coach Divers was definitely the best coach I’ve had the opportunity to play for. He was a man of many talents,” Spinner said. “I’m glad I’ll be able to see him around the community still even if I’m not on the ball field with him.” Even though Spinner wasn’t able to put the results of his hard work in the offseason on the field for the regular season, he has no regrets about the time and dedication he put into making himself a better player. That said, it still doesn’t make it any easier that the pandemic forced him and his teammates to lose their last year playing together. “Not being about to play my senior year with the guys I grew up with kind of hurt,” he said. “I’ve known most of them my whole life, and knowing I wouldn’t be able to play my last year with my brothers hurt bad.” With his baseball career over, Spinner will now move forward with his life while attending college at Virginia Western Community College and majoring in engineering with hopes of becoming an engineer. Divers will tell anyone that Spinner’s willingness to be a team-first player, working hard, sticking with it despite the struggles, and caring about the success of his team rather than himself is going to translate well into the real world. “Those are traits that don’t just make you a good player but also make you a good man,” Divers said. “Christian will be successful in whatever path he chooses.”

Sports Spotlight: SRHS seniors Eanes, Brown look to be heavy contributors for the Golden Eagles on both sides of the ball By William Seidel

The Staunton River High School football team will return many key pieces this season to try to get the program back on the right track. There are two key pieces that the Golden Eagles will depend on to make that happen, and those two are Linebacker/Fullback Jayson Eanes and Tailback/Safety Aidan Brown. Head Coach Shaun Leonard mentioned that Eanes and Brown are two players who have great instincts and are always making plays around the ball. “They’re ’’re re smart,” he said. “They “They put themselves in successsuccessful situations every game by doing their homework, doing the film study, paying attention in practice. They don’t’’tt just pracpractice to practice — they are practicing so they can get better.” Their attention to detail has paid off dividends for both of them during the 2019 season. For Eanes, he racked up 128 total tackles, including 96 solo and 64 assisted. He also had 11.5 tackles for loss and one pass break up. On offense, Eanes had 87 carries for 354 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Those numbers don’t really come as a surprise to his senior teammate, who noted Eanes’ main strength is his physicality. “He’s very aggressive on both sides of the ball, and he’s not hesitant to fill a hole on defense; he always sticks his head in there really quick,” said Brown. “The amount of tackles he had last year kind of speaks for that on its own. What I think separates him from the rest is he watches film off the field,

which obviously translates over to the game.” Eanes had the impressive stats on defense, but Brown has been the brightest spot on offense for the Golden Eagles the past couple of seasons, rushing for 540 yards on 87 carries and four touchdowns to go along with it. He also caught nine passes for 76 yards. On defense at the safety position, Brown tallied 27 tackles with 19 solo and 16 assisted. He also had an interception to go along with it. Eanes said that his senior teammate is one that the team relies heavily on the defensive side. “Aidan is one of the leaders. His leadership is outstanding on this team,” Eanes said. “The way he is dedicated to watching film, the way he always knows his assignments on offense and defense, he just goes out there and gets the job done.” It wasn’t just their head coach who praised their work ethic and dedication in the film room; both offensive coordinator Joshua Smallwood and defensive coordinator Hunter Sheperd had lots of positives to say about their two-star players. Smallwood mentioned that Brown is a key utility player for the Golden Eagles, saying they can line him up anywhere on the field and he’ll still be able to contribute. He also said that Brown is a “very powerful” back that can catch the football, run the football, run people over, run by them, or make a move on them.

“He’s very versatile,” Smallwood said. “There’s not a skill position on offensive side that we wouldn’t feel uncomfortable putting him at. We can plug and play him anywhere.” As for Eanes, Smallwood said he’s a downhill, north and south

runner, who is not afraid to square his shoulders and run into opposing defenders to fight for extra yardage. He mentioned that Eanes is dangerous when he gets into the next level of the defense because of how hard he runs and his ability to fight through tackles.

“He’s a hard-nosed football player, and he is going to get some yards after contact that other players may not,” Smallwood said. On the defensive side, Sheperd said that Brown is his “eyes on the field” in regard to spotting mistakes and allowing him to fix them on the sidelines. He also said that Brown is the “brains on the field” and is by far one of the smartest players they have on the team and understands the game very well. Sheperd noted that Brown studies film almost as much as the coaches do and is relentless in the weight room. “He does all the little things right, which makes him a good competitor,” Sheperd said. When it comes to Eanes, Sheperd said when they look at the film, they always see him around the ball almost all the time. He said Eanes is the anchor to the defense and is one of the more instinctive guys they have on the team. Sheperd also mentioned some other attributes that make him a great linebacker for the Golden Eagles.

“He’s big, he’s aggressive, he’s athletic, he’s not afraid to plug the holes, and he does a great job at finding the ball on the field,” Sheperd said. “He just has a natural feel for the game at the linebacker spot.” Eanes and Brown will look to use their playmaking skills to help propel the Golden Eagles to their first winning season in a couple of years. Both have said that with the talent coming back and the chemistry this team has built, they expect to see success if they are able to play this season. Brown noted that the last two seasons have been rough, but this team believes they are going to take a big step forward and have a winning season. “I think that’s not an outrageous statement at all,” he said. “We have the ability to beat a lot of teams, especially now that we have a good team chemistry.” Eanes said the adversary the team has faced the past two seasons

Lake Life 2020 |

has sparked something in this senior class and the team in general that they want to go out and prove what they are capable of. “We’re fired up,” Eanes said. “The leadership of the senior class this offseason from the senior class has been amazing.” As for their plans outside of high school, Eanes will be looking to continue his football career and majoring in marketing but is undecided on where he will go play for the next four years. Right now, he has offers from Bethany College, Averett University, Ferrum College, Lawrence Technological College, Christopher Newport University and Hampden-Sydney College. For Brown, he wants to continue his baseball career and major in pre-physical therapy but is undecided as well on where he will attend college. Colleges that are interested in Brown right now are Concord University, Bridgewater College, University of Lynchburg, Salisbury University, Marymount University, and Hampden-

Sydney College. For both of them, that’s the least of their concerns as they only want to get back on the football field and have one last go around as teammates. Having played football since they were 6 years old, both have stated it’s hard to wait it out, but they are hoping they will play their senior season. “I’ve been waiting for my senior year because it’s the most important year,” Eanes said. “It’s just saddening that it could easily be taken away from us.” If these seniors do get the opportunity to put the pads on one more time as Golden Eagles, Brown said that no matter what team is on the schedule, whether it be William Byrd, Franklin County, Lord Botetourt, Northside or anybody else, this team will come out with a desire to fight. “Expect us to be playing with a chip on our shoulder,” Brown said.

Sports Spotlight: On and off the gridiron, Kirtley and Jones lead by example By William Seidel

For the Staunton River High School football team, the 2020 football season features a lot of promise. With at least eight starters returning on both offense and defense, the Golden Eagles and their seniors, especially, have their eyes set on some big goals this year. However, like every other high school in Virginia, the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented all teams from working out together in the spring and practicing during the summer; and like every other high school team, SRHS football had to adjust on the fly. There have been two seniors specifically for the Golden Eagles who the coaching staff knew they could depend on to get the team to buy in and stay motivated — Quarterback/Linebacker Jacob Kirtley and Tight End/Defensive End Jamelle Jones. “When all of this happened, I knew that they were two that the staff and I would lean on,” said SRHS Head Football Coach Shaun Leonard. He also said that Kirtley and Jones are exactly what you look for in your seniors to lead. For Kirtley, Leonard said he is a true role model as a student in the classroom and on the field as a player. Both of those statements are true, as Kirtley currently holds a 3.5 GPA and has been a fouryear player on varsity for the Golden Eagles. “Jacob is our leader by example,” Leonard said. “He’s a special kid to have around.” For Jones, Leonard said he leads by his work ethic and his determination to get better. An example of this is how Jones, who was an offensive lineman throughout middle school and the first two years of high school, transformed his body after the 2018 season and switched positions to tight end. Leonard credits that to his relentless motor and

willingness to put the work in. “Jamelle is one of the hardest working kids that we have had,” Leonard said. “Coaches will see kids on the field and think, ‘Man they can be something special as long as they put the work in.’ That is something we have never had to worry about with Jamelle.” Speaking of putting the work in, the two seniors have definitely put their work in this offseason back in spring and this summer. Kirtley’s older brother, Sam Kirtley, who plays football and wrestles at Bluefield College, has given his brother multiple workout plans to keep himself in shape. After he is done with his workout for the day, Kirtley comes up to SRHS to run a mile or two on the track and then does agility drills on the field. Jones has been working out with his father since schools were shut down from the pandemic. At first, he lifted weights at his house until the gyms opened back up, and he has gone there since. Jones said he’s in the gym five and sometimes six days a week just trying to get stronger and keep himself in shape. He also comes with Kirtley to the football field to do some agility drills. Both Jones and Kirtley have also challenged their teammates to not slack off while they’ve been away from each other. Jones specifically mentioned that coaches can’t do much since they aren’t with them right now and they have more responsibilities as players to make sure they’re staying in shape and getting stronger. “Most of the lifting and running is mostly on us at this point,” Jones said as Kirtley looked toward him nodding. “All of us have had to take actions within ourselves to get out to the field to run or go to the gym and lift weights. We can’t rely on the coaches to bring us up here and make

us do it. You got to want it.” Kirtley followed Jones comments by saying they have been vocal and communicating with their teammates to make sure they are doing their part. They also let them know they’re there for them if they need to reach out. “We’ll reach out to see if they’re doing their workouts and if they

need anything. If they need help, they can always ask us questions. We want to help them as much as we can,” Kirtley said. The spring season is the time when football programs begin lifting with the eighth graders that are planning to play at the high school level. The pandemic had put a halt on that, but Jones was already on top of it by making sure the eighth graders were still engaged and

focus with the rest of the team doing their workouts. It was actually quite easy for him to check up on them. Jones’ younger brother, JaMarkus Murphy, will be a freshman at SRHS and has been working out with his older brother throughout the offseason. Jones also has made sure his brother checks in on the other freshman to ensure they’re doing their workouts as well. “I got him checking in on them making sure they’re working out, running and all of that,” Jones said. Both Kirtley and Jones remember when they were eighth graders moving up and mentioned star players such as Grayson Overstreet, T.J. Tester and others taking them under their wing to make sure their transition from middle school to high school was a smooth one. Now they want to have that same type of impact. “They helped me get in, get to lifting, and all that,” Jones said. “I knew I could always shoot them a call if I needed to, and I try and do that for these guys — let them know that if they need me, they can reach out, and I’ll be there for them.” For these two, they have been playing football since they were 5 years old, so it’s safe to say that the game means a lot to them. It’s been hard to process for them that the possibility of their last career high school game was their final game of their junior year against Northside. Neither believed back then that it could’ve been their final time putting on the pads for SRHS. What makes it harder is knowing the expectations they have for their senior season. Kirtley mentioned the number of starters coming back was a big reason why they have high expectations but also said everyone has been working hard at their respective positions, and they’ve been able to grow and play together as a team. “We know how to motivate and help each other,” Kirtley said. “We work together good; we complement each other.” Jones followed up Kirtley’s comments by saying he has high expectations because he knows what everybody on the team can do and what they’re capable of. A successful season is the ideal way to go out for these seniors, who have been through a lot. Most notably, they have gone through several different head coaches in three years.

Their freshman year saw head coach Chuck Poston step down after eight seasons; their sophomore year saw head coach Jeremy Haymore resign after the first two games of the season (replaced by Brian Divers, who was the team’s interim football coach for the rest of the season); and their junior year was under Leonard. If their senior season were to happen this year, it will be the first time this senior class has had the same head coach for consecutive seasons in their high school career. Leonard noted that it takes a special group to stick with a program that has faced turmoil like that, and he made it abundantly clear that the seniors will be honored this year because they deserve it. “They’ve been through a bunch of stuff through their years at Staunton River, and this (pandemic and football season being delayed) has just added on to it,” Leonard said. “We will find a way to honor and celebrate these guys.” As for their plans outside of high school, Kirtley said he hasn’t decided on a school yet, but he plans to major in mechanical engineering. Jones is undecided as well but is looking to continue his football career in college and holds two offers so far from University of Pugent Sound and Heidelberg University. He plans to major in athletic training/sports management. That may be their future plans, but for right now, all they want is one more opportunity to play the game they love. “I’m praying we have a football season this year,” Kirtley said. “I just wish I can be on that field again.” “I love football and I love fighting with my teammates on the field even more,” Jones said. “I just want to play with them again; I just want to play with them one more time. If I can get one more game, it would make my life.”

Sports Spotlight: Ferguson, Whittaker hope to serve it up one more time By William Seidel

It’s the backend of August, and usually at this point, fall athletes are gearing up for the start of the season. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fall athletes are forced to play the waiting game to see if the model 3 plan voted on by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) will follow through. For seniors, it’s something they never envisioned happening to them at this point last year, and, honestly, who can blame them? For two seniors specifically at Staunton River High School (SRHS), Jaelynn Ferguson and Gracie Whittaker, the thought of not being able to play their final year of volleyball is a possibility they can’t fathom. “That will be a really tough thing for us to hear,” Ferguson said as Whittaker looked on nodding with agreement. “It would break my heart; I would be devastated.” Both Ferguson, who plays outside hitter, and Whittaker, who plays inside and outside hitter, are the only two seniors on the volleyball team and have played varsity for the Golden Eagles since they were freshman. Although the Golden Eagles will be somewhat young and inexperienced, the senior duo still believes their final year has the potential to be great. It will come with its challenges, however. The SRHS volleyball team lost six seniors from last year and only three of the now juniors played varsity last year. Teams that usually see a major loss in experience would have the offseason and workouts together to build the chemistry and gel together as a group. However, the COV COVID-19 pandemic prevented offseason workouts from happening. This has led Ferguson and Whittaker to embrace the mindset of stepping up their leadership role as seniors during the summer and when workouts open back up.

“I definitely am putting a lot of pressure on myself,” Whittaker said. “I feel like I’m responsible for us getting together, being able to have fun, telling my teammates what they can work on and how to fix it.” “Gracie and I have been on varsity since our freshman year, so we worked really hard to bring ourselves up into this position,” Ferguson said in response to Whittaker’s comments. “We’re trying to keep the energy up and keep everybody in a positive attitude. So we do put a lot on ourselves, just so we can have that teamwork and bonding to a point that we haven’t been able to have the past seasons.” Their former teammate, Hollie Creasey, doesn’t have any doubt they can be true leaders that the volleyball team needs. “I believe they will both do great bringing the team together. They both were like sisters to me when playing with them; they are both responsible and mature,” Creasey said. “I believe that being on varsity since freshman year, they know the role and what to expect to become a team leader and how to earn the spot of captain. They both are very bright and intelligent girls as well.” SRHS Volleyball Head Coach Sharon Blake also is confident in her two seniors, stating they each add something different to the chemistry of the team. She said that they are both hard-working athletes and have modeled that in practice, in games and even when supporting on the bench. Speaking of hard work, both have been busting their tails the whole off-season. They have trained under former SRHS teacher and Northside Volleyball Coach Tom Houser to keep their skills as sharp as they can. They also

attended volleyball clinics during the summer such as The Spectrum, HOV Beach Volleyball and others. As for staying in shape, Ferguson has been training and lifting with her father, who had been a strength coach at Virginia Tech. For Whittaker, she has been doing a lot of basketball workouts in the summer, which has helped her keep in shape. That type of work ethic is something Blake likes to see out of her seniors, which makes her more confident in them. “Gracie and Jae have the personalities and dedication to model the commitment it takes to get the team together,” she said. For both Ferguson and Whittaker, Blake has meant everything to

Notes From The River

By Glenn Ayers

Hammett’s Run Blanche left the farm as a young teenager in late summer, 1945, right after the War ended. When she returned for a visit in 1969, she had young teenagers of her own. I recall her happily saying, “I’m so glad so much is the same. Earl goes on, and, even the mailman’s the same!” Indeed. From our earliest days at the River until I had left, returned, and been back myself 10 years, William Hammett Saunders was our mail carrier. It was always just “Hammett.” I learned the “William” from his tombstone. I can still hear Vicey saying, “Hammett’s run,” as she looked out the kitchen window. That meant get the mail, though Rich was usually sitting at the mailbox waiting for him. Saunders delivered all the mail for “Route 1, Moneta” in our Road days from an old Ford pickup. He was the only mail carrier working out of the Moneta Post Office, and “Route 1” the only route in the days of which I speak. His delivery area

them on and off the court. Whittaker noted that Blake is someone who not only helps them with volleyball but helps them with anything they may be having problems with, whether school related, home related, etc. “She’s just a mom at school,” Whittaker said. “It’s really nice to have her to talk to if you’re having a bad day at school or just anything that might be bothering you.” Ferguson agreed with Whittaker and also pointed out how she always tries to push her players and bring out the best in them. “Oh, she’s competitive; she always wants to win and wants to see us competing at our best,” Ferguson said. “She’s a great coach that

was humongous, stretching into Franklin County. With the number of postal patrons on his former route today, Hammett might need a week to make one round. As it was, he made the round daily, delivering and collecting mail, selling stamps and bringing oversized packages to your house as well as letters needing certification signatures. Still he had time to farm with his brother, Clyde Saunders (his substitute), at their side-by-side homes in the Fancy Grove neighborhood. Blanche would truly have been incredulous had she known that Hammett carried the mail about as long before 1945 as he did afterward. He entered the Army in 1918, went to Camp Lee, but saw no overseas duty owing to the Armistice. Shortly after coming home, he joined the postal service. He was in his early 20s when he started, meeting his wife, Virginia. Leaving notes in the mailboxes of the homes where she boarded as a school teacher was part of his courtship. While not truly part of the “Pony Express,” he did ride a horse at first, shielding himself from the elements with an umbrella. According to family stories, he often had to stop in homes to dry off or thaw out. Later he rode in a “jumper,” a small gig behind the horse. Then the Machine Age caught up with the Moneta P.O. Hammett acquired a Model-T Ford. Today’s postal carriers face much stress to be sure, but think of what Hammett faced. Just keeping a horse fit, or a vehicle running, was his responsibility alone. In the early days, there was no backup, often not even a telephone to use. That Ford pickup we remember had to last at least from 1941-45, as there were no new vehicles to purchase “for the duration.” It had to run six days per week, 52 weeks per year. Also, there were the road conditions. Ayers Road, #737 — in those days — was graveled only as far as Pitman Harris. In very wet weather, Earl had to hitch the team to pull our car

knows when to encourage us and keeping the energy high on the court.” Whether or not they will get one final season to play under Blake is yet to be seen, but their head coach has promised no matter what happens, they will honor their two seniors this year. “As a parent of a 2020 graduated athlete, I get it. I’ve felt the disappointment and seen the uncertainty first hand through my own child’s eyes,” Blake said. “No matter the outcome or decision for high school sports this year, we will honor our seniors. They’ve worked too hard to have it all disappear.” Although the school year just started, both Ferguson and Whit-

from there to the farm, about a mile. Hammett had much more than a mile of that to face. In heavy snow, he plowed through with chains as far and as long as he could. Snowplows were nearly unheard of. In the blizzard of 1958, when drifts blocked the road for days, Earl reported Hammett was the last and first person he, Vicey, ’Lonza and Mamie saw for 10 days. Then there were daily nuisances — mainly dogs, but now and then, his patrons. Probably, the dogs were a little problem once he became automated, but it’s even money they pestered him on horseback and in the jumper. His customers could be a bigger pain. The worst was one his niece told me about. A particular man on his route seldom unloaded his mailbox. One day, Hammett had to take an oversized package to the house. Since he was going, he emptied the box, taking it with him. The recipient was sitting on the porch with a shotgun across his lap. He informed Hammett in surly fashion not to come any closer; just leave the mail at the gate. So much for postal accommodation. Several times a day, I drive through the farm and emerge at the old mailbox on Ayers Road. I must stop, as many more vehicles pass in one day than in a month of the Road days. When I glance to the left, I still expect to see an old Ford pickup, driven by a man in a sun helmet with a Mona Lisa smile. He came for so long, he’s bound to come again. When it happens, I, too, will be able to say: “Hammett’s run.”

taker have an idea on what their plans are after high school. For Ferguson, she plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in engineering. Whittaker plans to attend Virginia Western Community College and then transfer to Liberty University to major in education. All the two can do now is to continue with workouts when school starts back up and just hope for the best. One thing is for certain, though: If the season is played, those two won’t take a practice or game for granted. “It’s definitely sad now thinking about it that we may never play again,” Ferguson said. “Volleyball really has been a big part of my life. I’m just not ready for it to be over.”

Practice makes perfect for Moneta musician By A.J. O’Leary

Tate Tuck, 17, of Moneta, has been playing guitar since he was nine.

Lake Life 2020 |

Everyone knows the phrase “practice makes perfect,” but few embody it like Tate Tuck. Tuck, a laid-back 17-year-old from Moneta, plays guitar and sings regularly at venues throughout South Central Virginia and parts of North Carolina. Most days Tuck plays two or three hours, and on days with gigs, sometimes up to six.

“A bunch of my guitar teachers would say, ‘If you’re not loving what you’re doing, why are you doing it?’ So that’s kind of the way I’ve looked at it.” Tuck said. “I just like playing.” Tuck first started when he was 9, and said he just kept playing since then. At first glance, Tuck looks a year or two younger than his age, but to watch him perform is to witness the craft of a seasoned performer. Tuck said he first performed at an open-mic about two years ago, even though he was terrified, because of a deal he made with his mom. “She kind of bribed me,” Tuck said. “She said, ‘If you get up there and play, I’ll let you get a tattoo.’ So that’s how I was able to do it.” Tuck now sports the phrase “Tuck it” on his upper arm and has had the performing bug ever since. For two years now, Tuck said he has been playing at bars, breweries and other music venues, honing

his performance into a three-hour set including country and rock songs and the occasional wild card like Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff,” or “Gin and Juice,” by Snoop Dogg. “I like listening to anything. I mean my playlist goes from Luke Bryan to Lil Baby, Kendrick Lamar, Shawn Mendes, Halsey — anything like that,” Tuck said. Although Tuck said he sometimes performs alone, he prefers to play with other musicians. He said Fred Pucci, a bass player he met at an open-mic who he often performs with, sometimes gets mistaken for his uncle after performances. Despite his youth, Tuck said he’s written around 20 or 30 songs. He said it will take some time before he’s able to perform his own songs in public, however. “It’s just another level of confidence I have to build up to be able to do it,” Tuck said. Tuck said he thinks music has helped him to grow as a person, and with two years under his belt as a performer already, he wants to continue growing as an artist. “I’d like to be able to take it to the next level, be able to go to Nashville or wherever it might be. I just want to be able to take it to that next spot,” Tuck said.

New Burnt Chimney Elementary principal welcomed Former principal is now district director of operations By Jeffrey Westbrook

This year as students at Burnt Chimney Elementary School returned to school, a new principal welcomed them back. Allison Garland has been appointed the new principal following Jason Guilliams’ move to the Franklin County Public Schools (FCPS) office as director of operations. Garland is no stranger to FCPS; she grew up in the county and graduated from Franklin County High School. She has spent the last 12 years working in the district, starting out with nine years of service as counselor at Dudley Elementary School, followed by a year as family liaison at Rocky Mount Elementary School, and completed a two-year tour at the middle school as dean of students. The new principal earned her undergraduate degree from Christopher Newport University and her master’s degree from the University of Montana. While Garland agreed that “it is not super common” for administrators to emerge from the ranks of the counselors, she noted that it does happen. She also pointed out that as a school counselor, she had experience teaching all the students in a school across all grade levels. “I’ve always been interested in curriculum and instruction,” she added. In many ways, her background as a counselor has provided Garland with important preparation for her new role. “I have experience in working with students with special needs, working with families as a support professional, building relationships and helping students being successful,” she explained. Also, as a counselor, she had experience working with all the students and teachers in a school, much like she will need to do in her new role. In explaining her philosophy of successful schools, the new principal stated: “Schools should be a refuge, a safe space for all students. They should experience love, be challenged and have opportunities to be successful. School should be a place where kids want to be. I also believe that we must set high expectations, and students will rise to the occasion.” As principal she sees it as her role to give all the people in the school community the opportunity and support they need, and all students can be successful. She seeks to “help students believe in themselves and give them the tools they need.” She also explained her role in helping teachers: being a team leader, encouraging everyone to work together and supporting each other. She sees herself as an instructional leader who must stay current on best practices, instructional strategies and new ways to present information to students. She plans to be visible, positive and supporting.

“Teachers are amazing humans and go above and beyond; my role is to support them in what they’re already good at doing,” Garland remarked. While taking one’s first step into the role of principal may seem a challenge at the best of times, Garland is undauntedly plunging in during the year of the coronavirus. Amid these unprecedented circumstances, Garland pointed out that making the school a safe and welcoming environment is a top priority. “The students should feel welcome here,” she said. Balancing safety and a measure of normalcy also has become important. “We need to make it safe but not very different than it was before,” she remarked. “We need to maintain high levels of instruction: lots of details, guidelines, instruction.” Her goal is to “help staff stay organized and detailed in communicating with students,” communication being critical to achieving these objectives. “We’re prioritizing the health and safety of every student,” she added. The school division is using the Canvas online learning instruction system during this new era of hybrid online and in-person instruction. It enables students to access their lessons whether at home or in school. “It has involved a lot of teacher training and helping people be prepared,” she noted. In this unusual school year, striving to make the most of in-person schooling while maximizing instruction online as needed appears to be the new standard. While the faculty at Burnt Chimney Elementary School have prepared to facilitate the logistics of online instruction, they were eager for in-person interaction.

“My staff cannot wait to have students in the building,” remarked Garland before school started. They cannot wait to give them air high-fives and air hugs. They want to check and make sure their kids are doing well. School provides not just teaching, but food and caring adults to talk to. Whenever there’s a need, we try to fill that for the student and family. Teachers worry when they can’t do that.” She also noted that the teachers were eager to begin teaching the students in person again and were concerned that it has been since March that they were last able to provide in-person help in reading and math. Concerning her predecessor, Garland stated, “Jason Guilliams was an amazing principal. The community thought a lot of him. He will be missed.”

Lake Life 2020 | Franklin County Public Schools/Contributed

Jason Guilliams, former principal at Burnt Chimney Elementary, took on the job of director of operations for Franklin County Public Schools this summer.

And what happened to Guilliams? In midJune, he took up the role of director of operations for FCPS. In that position, he heads up the district’s divisions of Transportation, Maintenance, School Safety and Food Services. “We have good people in each of those divisions and a supervisor over each,” he remarked. Guilliams explained that he had not planned on the transition. “The opportunity came up,” he said. “Something like this never happens when you plan it to. It worked out for me. It all happened so quickly.” And just as with Garland, Guilliams makes his entry into this new role amidst the added challenges of coronavirus-related regulations. “A lot of COVID protocols fall under this umbrella (of the director of operations),” he said. As overseer of these four divisions, he has been “dealing a lot with getting schools ready to come back to school.” He has been setting up to follow the new protocols for daily health screenings and making sure that schools have the health equipment and other materials they need fall under his purview. Transportation logistics have provided a challenge, making sure there are enough drivers and scheduling the bus routes. “With over 7,000 students in the division, that has taken a majority of my time this summer,” he noted. Guilliams speaks highly of Burnt Chimney Elementary School and his time there. “I spent three years there as the principal and was previously there for eight years as a teacher,” he said. “I loved my time there. It’s a great school, great community, with good staff, parents and kids. They’re in good hands with Ms. Garland; she’s going to do a great job.”

Celebrating Our One Year Anniversary! Thank you for your business!

We continue to pray for the safety of our patients and community.

Call our office today to schedule your complimentary hearing evaluation. SOUNDZ LYNCHBURG

T

he Bible says “He that hath EAR, let them HEAR.” Timothy Bratton, H.I.S has been helping that come to fruition for people for over twenty years. Now, he and his wife Veronica are looking forward to their third year in Lynchburg as the new owners of the Soundz Lynchburg location. Tim and Veronica are committed to continuing the mission of helping people hear and understand their loved ones with the best technology, for the best price, and with the best service.

Fairway Village at Westlake 13335-A Booker T. Washington Hwy. Hardy, VA 24101 Tim knows first hand the importance of your loved ones hearing and understanding you. His own mother and sister each have profound hearing loss. He spent several years with his mother smiling and pretending she heard and understood the family. This is one of the reasons he chose hearing as a profession, he wanted to help his family. Tim treats all of his patients as he would want his mother treated. Our best advertisement has been our happy patients.

After having been a Liberty University student in the late 70’s it has been a profound experience for Tim to be back in Lynchburg and seeing Jerry’s vision being fulfilled. Tim recalls the days of singing “I want that mountain” and now he gets to see the Rise of LU Athletics to FBS status.

540-912-0128

Most importantly, Tim and Veronica give all the glory for Soundz’s success to Jesus. When you do business HIS way you are doing it the right way.
