lthough many events surrounding Smith Mountain Lake were canceled due to concerns over COVID-19, including the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival, there was one large event that was able to pull it off. Smith Mountain Lake Pirate Days, one of the area’s most anticipated events of the year, was still held the third weekend in July, giving many local residents something exciting to do after a dry spell of activities. One of Pirate Days’ highlights was on Saturday, July 18, when pirates featuring Star City Scallywags and The Loose Cannon Company sailed the lake near Crazy Horse Marina. The morning consisted of live music and locals with their own boats and jet skis relaxing, riding around the lake or battling the Virginia Dare cruise ship. The Virginia Dare cruise ship took part in Pirate Days as a ship that “battled” with the Star City Scallywags, The Loose Cannon Company, and locals who came out to join the event. The Virginia Dare, which left the Virginia Dare Marina in Moneta at 11 a.m., met its match, as the locals who took part constantly sprayed and showered the cruise ship with water despite being sprayed from afar or having biodegradable water balloons thrown at them from Virginia Dare pirates. Some pirates stood on the land away from the action and fired replica cannons and guns.

Another highlight of Pirate Days was the 2020 Pirate Ball on that Friday at Mango’s Bar & Grill, which featured live music and pirate attire for a custom contest. This year marked the third time the pirate ball was featured for Pirate Days since it came into existence back in 2011, and it is widely considered one of the most anticipated events of Pirate Days. This year also featured limited seating due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as social distancing was required at the event. Even with COVID-19 pandemic restrictions of 50 percent capacity, the 2020 Pirate Ball was still a huge success. Mango’s was already at full capacity for the Pirate Ball in less than an hour, and many people had to stand on the decks above the restaurant to watch and enjoy the concert. Those who wanted to get in had to be over 21 and purchase tickets ahead of time. Many visitors gathered at the Bar & Grill dressed in pirate outfits, enjoying live music from the band Out of Spite — all while being spaced out, in contrast to shoulder-to-shoulder gatherings at other concerts. Having to be seated at tables and practice social distancing, many visitors enjoyed ice-cold beverages, cheered on the band, and chatted it up with their friends as they took advantage of celebrating any way they can. Other events included a pirate trivia that was held Thursday, July 16, in the bar at Jake’s Place in Moneta starting at 6 p.m., followed by

In addition to the Pirate’s Ball held that Friday, there was live music by Scott Joshaway at Jake’s Place at 7 p.m. On Saturday of that weekend, while pirate battles were held during the day, Jake’s Place had a DJ and plank walking at noon and live music by Barefoot West at 7 p.m. Drifter’s restaurant in Moneta offered live music by DDT’s. On that Sunday, a Paddle Sports Poker Run was held at Crazy Horse Marina at 9 a.m. to cap off the Pirate Days festivities. The Pirate Days schedule was coordinated by P.J. Nagel, owner of Capt. Party in Roanoke. William Seidel/Lake Life

Notes From The River

By Glenn Ayers

RUFUS AND WIFE It’s hard to believe as many years have passed since Rufus Kasey was buried. Time sort of stops when the legends die. Lynn Martin, Boyce and Betty Ashwell and I braved the elements that January day to be at his graveside ceremony. We were the only white folks there, save the American Legionnaires of his honor guard. That was rather surprising since Kasey was so unusual, wellknown and admired by all. And not only was his own persona out of the ordinary, but so were many of those close to him, particularly his wife, Louise, who preceded his passing in 1997. It made that section of the White House community the colorful region it was, though Rufus was always linchpin to the action. He was a man of many talents and vocations. He operated a business that involved used parts and repairs as well as a tow truck and varying paraphernalia for collecting and moving his inventory. In short, it was a junkyard. Moreover, it was an important one for the whole community. There’s hardly a farmer, auto mechanic or sawmiller in the entire River area who hasn’t used Rufus Kasey’s service at one time or another. If NAPA didn’t have it or one of the local garages, the word was, “Try Rufus Kasey.” “He was a good one,” said Herbert Plymale, a sawmiller on Ayers Road. “He saved me many a time.” Kasey and his wife lived in the center of this machine age emporium, located on the Smith Mountain Lake Parkway. Mrs. Kasey shared 50 years with Rufus, producing seven children, who in turn delivered 38 grand- and great-grandchildren. They had one vocation in common. Both were school bus drivers. In this, Louise Kasey had the edge. Rufus had the short route near home (in order to tend to his enterprises), while Mrs. K. worked in the school cafeteria between running her routes. She was a cook of some renown. It was her driving, however, for which she’s remembered.

SIX

| 13

Anyone who ever rode with her, including me, would attest, she could flat out drive a bus. A retired teacher I know, remembers her driving the school forensics team to a meet in Rustburg. His story went like this: “We came around one of those blind curves on Route 24. Suddenly there was a logging truck turned sideways, right smack in the middle of the road. Any other driver would have slammed on the brakes and slid into it. Louise just veered hard right, grabbed another gear and went around straddling ditch and bank as slick as Dale Earnhardt would have. My heart thumped all the way to Rustburg!” There are too many tales, twists and anecdotes in the Kasey saga to trace in less than a bound volume. Rufus Kasey began life in 1918. “He had a hard raisin’,” related Lynn Martin who employed him on his farm until he was drafted for WWII. Kasey once reflected on this in a 1998 interview: “I went to school as long as I could, to keep from workin’ all the time at home.” He attended the old segregated Oak Grove School on the Stone Mountain Road near where the white, Mt. Pleasant Academy then operated. “Them white boys’d beat up on me ‘bout ev’ry day, but it was better’n workin’ at home,” he said. Indeed, he persevered through all seven grades offered. He knew that being black, there was no chance for a secondary education in those River days. He tried anyway. “I went back the next year. I knew I’d finished, but I knew if I went home, they’d put me t’work. Teacher said, ‘Rufus, you know you done finished all yo’ lessons here.’ So, I had’ta go,” he said. Kasey had two extraordinary gifts. One was conversational charisma. There were few matters in the whole River neighborhood he didn’t know first-hand, and he had an amusing repartee to recount them. If he began talking with you, you began to notice that a crowd was gathering around to listen. Another talent he had was playing the banjo. He was good enough in the claw-hammer style to be invited yearly to the Ferrum Folk Festival. A folklore collector once offered him $20 to play 20 minutes. Kasey replied, “No, but I’ll play an hour for $100.” Always the businessman. Kasey was not without some minor political clout. No less than a state senator pressured the highway department to alter the eyesore he deemed the junkyard to be. All that was done was to erect a no parking sign where Rufus had parked his school bus and other less reputable vehicles. Still, he managed to squeeze the bus in between it and his driveway. The sign was a modern version: a “P” with a slash through it. Someone asked down at the store what a “slashed P meant?” “T’ain’t no slashed P, some joker answered. It’s a double-R. Means ‘Reserved for Rufus’.” It still stands — sort of a memorial to Rufus Kasey, and Louise, too, if you think about it.

SMALL BUSINESS

Virginia Dare Cruises & Marina chugging along By William Seidel

S

ince March, businesses around Smith Mountain Lake have felt the negative impact from the coronavirus, though some have managed to stay open and push through the pandemic. One of those businesses is Virginia Dare Cruises & Marina, located at 3619 Airport Road in Moneta, and owned by Garret Meyer and Darrin Main. They are locally famous for their cruise ship, which people can dine on and enjoy a two-hour cruise. With the restrictions, the Virginia Dare and Portside Grill and Bar hasn’t been able to run at full capacity, but Meyer and Main wants everyone to know that the pandemic isn’t going to stop their business. Virginia Dare takes off on a scheduled cruise.

“Garret and I, along with our family and friends, we decided to just take the Dare out for a cruise,” Main said in July. “We went down to the bridge and we went up to some places where she hasn’t been in a long time, just so people can see that we’re still here.” As far as operations go, nothing has been cut. People can still have their choice of reserving a spot on the Virginia Dare ship for a cruise, they can enjoy a nice meal at the Portside Grill and Bar, and people driving their boats can still reserve slips to park their boats and fill up with mid-grade non-ethanol gas at business gas stations. The Virginia Dare cruise reservation prices are still the same price at $25. Food cruises are still at $40, which allows residents to go on a cruise but have an all-you-can-eat type of meal. The cruise, which normally goes all the way down to the

lake dam and back, has been taking an alternative route this summer and has been taking residents up to the bridge to let tourists and citizens know that they’re business has not shut down. The Portside Grill and Bar, which is placed on a port that’s out and above the water, features a select list of food choices, but Meyer said to the food is top notch. “We don’t have a wide menu, but what we do, we do very well,” he said. Examples of the menu that Meyer gave were fresh half pound angus burgers, wings, Cuban sandwiches, philly-cheese steaks and hot dogs. He also noted that two popular food choices are their wings and Cuban sandwiches, in which they go through about 2,500 wings and 80 Cuban sandwiches a day. Main also commented on how popular the wings are. He said that in the beginning of the shutdown, back when they were

doing just take out, the wings were always selling out. “We ended up having times where as soon as we open up, people decided to get five buckets of wings to take on their boat and take off,” he said. “Within the first 10 minutes of opening up, we were done; all the wings were gone.” To combat the high demand, Meyer and Main decided to buy another grill, specifically for wings only. Both have also said that even though restrictions have eased up, takeout is still an option and will probably remain an option even after the panpan demic ends. Meyer also said that in the near future, they will put up some fences along the grass area, which contains tables and chairs for those that want to enjoy a beverage and relax. They will also feature outdoor activities, such as corn hole. In addition, the Virginia Dare cruise ship participates in lake

events. At the Pirate Days event held the third weekend in July, the cruise ship “battled” the Star City Scallywags, The Loose Cannon Company, and other local boats. These pirates sprayed the Virginia Dare cruise ship with water but were met with water guns and biodegradable water balloons by cruise ship pirates. Although business for Virginia Dare Cruises and Marina has been different this summer, both Meyer and Main are still having their business run full force and following protocol to ensure the safety and well-being of both the staff and residents. Meyer also said that for those who have never been to their business or been on the lake in general, the Virginia Dare is one of the easiest ways to tour on the lake. “There’s no easier way to see this lake, especially those that have never been,” he said.

SML Discovery Shop sells donations for a cause By William Seidel

I

t had been a while since the Smith Mountain Lake Discovery Shop held an outdoor sale. It wasn’t until July that the shop was able to — the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Why was this important to them? The shop located on 400 Scruggs Road, Suite 500, in Moneta is ran by volunteers only, and all the items for sale in the shop are donated by community members. Some of the items that are donated are furniture, accessories, art, collectibles, garden equipment and jewelries. They do this to support a cause dear to their hearts. Proceeds from selling the donated items are sent to the local American Cancer Society. The funds donated to the ACS helps with research, education, advocacy, direct services to patients, etc. Linda Detrick, one of the volunteers of the SML Discovery Shop, was grateful the outdoor sale went “very well” and couldn’t be happier with the results. She also said she was very grateful that everyone followed protocol by wearing face masks and staying six feet apart from each other. Detrick emphasized that the SML Discovery Shop could use more volunteers and strongly encourages everyone who is interested to contact the store via email or by phone call. There are two floors featured at the shop. The top floor is accessible from the front of the building and features donations of gently used goods. The bottom floor, known as the Annex, has products that come in brand new from High Point Market. When the pandemic started, SML Discovery Shop closed its doors and stayed that way until June 6. They are only in business for two days a week, as both

shops are open on Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Detrick said that up until now, they were taking donations on both days they were open but will now only take donations on Wednesday. She also said if someone were to donate, they just need to go to the storage area where the backyard sale took place, and the volunteers will help take care of it. If one were to donate a big piece of furniture, dining room set or large item in general, Detrick said to call ahead of time before coming. William Seidel/Lake Life

Healing Strides unveil new logo and tagline By William Seidel

H

ealing Strides, a nonprofit organization located at 672 Naff Road in Boones Mill that helps people through personal challenges, including mental health, has a new logo and tagline. Both were revealed at a ribbon-cutting event July 28 that was held by the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce. The old logo, which featured a little girl on a horse, was replaced with an individual hugging a horse. The old tagline that read “changing lives, one stride at a time” has been updated to the new tagline, which is “horses inspiring hope.” Carol Young, who has been with Healing Strides since 2008 and is now the CEO of the organization, said the new logo and tagline just fit in more with their vision, which now features mental health. “This encompassed everything,” she said referring to the new tagline. Healing Strides was rebranded last fall, but due to rescheduling and then being temporarily shut down from the COVID-19 pandemic, it wasn’t until recently when they were able to hold a celebration event. For those unfamiliar with Healing Strides, Young said it’s a place where children and adults can come in a safe and supportive environment that supports those with personal challenges, such as mental health for example. “That’s what our mission statement says: is that we support people with personal challenges,” Young said. She said that now is a time, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when everyone has their own personal challenges and is thankful that Healing Strides is back open to help the community. She noted that lots of safety protocols have been put in place to allow people to come safely and noted that since it’s outside, they also get to practice social distancing. Healing Strides will still have a display of the old logo near the entrance. Young said the reason it will remain there despite the change is because it’s part of their history. She also noted it’s up there in memory of Lawrence Barger. William Seidel/Lake Life

Mango’s Bar & Grill strives to be a vacation destination By William Seidel

O

ne of the most popular locations at Smith Mountain Lake to enjoy a meal and drinks with live music is Mango’s Bar & Grill. Located at the Bridgewater Plaza at 16430 Booker T. Washington Highway in Moneta, the seasonal restaurant opens on the first of March and closes the week before Christmas. It is known for its locally popular American grilled food and live concerts every Friday and Saturday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. On any given weekend, Mango’s could easily fill up its outdoor dining patio with 300-600 people, and there’s a reason for that. Mango’s General Manager Jason Hodnett stressed that customer service is a top priority at Mango’s and they are always finding ways to help make the customer experience at their restaurant an enjoyable one. “We want to make sure they have a positive experience, especially those that are on vacation, so they next time they come back for vacation, they’ll decide to eat at Mango’s again,” Hodnett said. One of the most notable live concerts held each year takes place in July during Pirate Days at the Pirate Ball. The band that performed at the ball was Out of Spite. Only guests who were 21 or older were allowed at the ball, as alcoholic beverages were served, and they could only get in by purchasing tickets ahead of time. New this year was limited seating to adhere to COVID-19 safety measures. Regardless of protocols, concert-goers were not going to let the pandemic stop them from celebrating one of the most anticipated events of Smith Mountain Lake. Many locals came out to Mango’s and filled all of the available seating. While practicing social distancing, concert-goers were eager to

chat with one another, as they were seen laughing, cheering the band and enjoying themselves. That’s the type of environment that Mango’s brings every weekend — a weekend where anybody can escape the problems of the outside world. atmosphere overtakes any stress or worry that you may have been feeling prior. It’s not just weekends where you can have a stress-free evening, though, as Mango’s features karaoke on Thursday nights and hosts other local events. One such activity is the Lyrics on the Lake Open

This year, it also will give part of the money raised to artists and technicians in need who have donated their time, talents and equipment to Lyrics on the Lake.

The Open Mic Competition had a different format in 2020 due to the pandemic. It normally starts in early May and goes through the middle of June, which leads up to the Lyrics on the Lake Songwriters Festival, but that festival was ultimately canceled. Mango’s still wanted to contribute to Children’s Miracle Network despite the setback, so the Open Mic Competition was held later in the year starting in June and extended. “What we decided to do to still help raise money for Children’s Miracle Network was that we extended it, so instead of doing one eight-week competition, we’re doing two seven-week competitions and that will go into September this year,” Hodnett said during the competition. “The way that we do it is that there is a six-week individual competition and the winner from all six weeks compete in a finale.” Due to a weather cancelation, the first Lyrics on the Lake Open Mic Competition only had five finalists who competed Aug. 5 for the grand prize. Originally, the grand winner would be offered a trip to Nashville with some studio time and the option to work with some of the professional songwriters. Because of all the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, a $250 cash prize was awarded to each grand prize winner. The two winners from the competitions also have an opportunity to play in next year’s Lyrics on the Lake Songwriters Festival and the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival. The champion or the first competition was Annalyse Hasty of Hardy a 14-year-old girl who turned out to be a crowd favorite and the favorite of an anonymous guest judge who has toured with popu-

Sports Spotlight:

Dudley is excited to continue her basketball career at Ferrum By William Seidel

F

or graduated Franklin County High School (FCHS) softball senior and upcoming Ferrum College Women’s Basketball player Brogan Dudley, losing her senior year for spring sports af affected her a little more differently than most seniors.During basketball season, she suffered a torn ACL the day after Christmas, which resulted in her having surgery in January. With a recovery of about nine months, Dudley knew that her basketball and softball career at FCHS were over. What hit hard for her was knowing she was able to play some of her senior year for basketball but she wasn’t going to get the opportunity to play one more year of softball before hanging up the cleats for good. “I knew I would not be playing softball and had lots of time to let that sink in,” Dudley said. The pain of losing the rest of her senior year in basketball and her entire senior softball season hurt because it goes a lot deeper for Dudley. When it comes to playing basketball and softball, it was lifestyle almost for her. She started playing both sports at the age of 5. For softball, Dudley played in the rec league starting out and then moved up to travel ball. She did both of these regularly from the fourth grade up until the sixth grade. Dudley stopped doing travel ball after making the middle school teams for both basketball and softball. For basketball, it’s almost the same story. Starting at age 5, Dudley played rec up until middle school when she made the basketball team. She also played a few tournaments for a travel team as well. Having played both sports for such a long time, it might be hard to choose which one is the preferred favorite. It was a close decision, but in the end, basketball won out for Dudley. “When choosing between the two sports, it came down to I just love basketball more,” she said. “The pace of the game, the speed on the court, and the constant movement wins out over softball for me.” Dudley noted that when she was in middle school playing basketball, she spent the off-season in the gym with the Franklin County coaches and older players. “We were in the gym every day in the off-season, and I got a lot of experience playing with the

Basketball varsity girls as a younger player,” she said. She continued to do that every year. If anybody can see the dedication Dudley has for basketball, it won’t come as a surprise to see basketball winning out as her favorite sport. Her former head basketball coach, Melvin Patterson, believes Dudley dedication to the sport will lead her to lots of success at Ferrum. “I believe success is determined by a player’s dedication and determination,” he said. “Commitment is everything, in terms of success. Brogan is a player that’s committed, and willing to ‘work’ to be the best. She understands that success comes with a dedication to prac-

tice, weight room and conditioning.” Patterson, who finished his first-season as head coach for the girls’ team, said Dudley has the “go” in her that every coach looks for, and her effort, energy and enthusiasm is a trait of all successful players. He also noted that some of the strengths of Dudley playing on the court were playing intense defense, boxing out or diving on the floor William Seidel/Lake Life

for 50/50 balls, and pushing the ball out in transition with court vision to facilitate or finish at the rim. These characteristics lead Patterson to believe that Dudley will be successful and will help lead the women’s basketball program at Ferrum. Another reason Patterson believes Dudley will be successful is due to the leadership of her new coach, Bryan Harvey, who will be entering his 16th year running the program. Patterson said that coaching plays a vital role in success, and Dudley will be playing under an “outstanding” coach in Harvey. “Coach Harvey has followed her progress for quite some time. With his knowledge of basketball, he will ensure Brogan is successful in helping the program continue to succeed,” he said. Dudley noted that although she only played under Patterson for half a season, he and his coaching staff still left a lasting impact on her. “I will miss Coach Patterson and my other coaches, Coach Gill, and Coach Flournoy. These coaches came in my senior year and really had a lot of faith in me and my position on the team. They gave me new confidence to think I could play basketball at the next level,” she said. “Unfortunately, I could not play for them the entire season. But thanks to their support, I will be able to join the team at Ferrum, and I am looking forward to beginning working with Coach Harvey.” Why Ferrum, though? It wasn’t a hard choice for Dudley. Having attended basketball camps at Ferrum since she was little, Dudley was very familiar with the campus. She also said that visiting other colleges through student tours and basketball camps only helped solidify her decision, as none compared to the feeling of being at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference school. Dudley plans to major in Health and Human Performance and become a Health and Physical Education teacher. It’s important to note that just because Dudley prefers basketball and will be playing the sport in college doesn’t diminish her love for softball. “I love playing softball,” she said. “Being

outside and in the dirt, hearing the snap of the ball in the glove, is what I love to do every spring.” Yes, she loved playing the game, but she also was a very important piece to the team. Just ask her former head softball coach, Bryan Forbes. “Brogan is a very good softball player. Her strengths are the ability to track and cover large areas of the outfield. As a hitter her best asset was her ability to be able to lay down any type of bunt she was asked to do. Brogan also was a great baserunner who could steal a base or two during a game,” he said. Forbes also believes that Dudley will have success at Ferrum due to her willingness to put the team before herself and accept any role to help the team win. Dudley expressed gratitude to her now former coach and all the other softball coaches she played under, saying they helped push her to become better as a player and a person, which helped prepare her for the

next level. “I will miss Coach Forbes, and I will also miss all of my other softball coaches, Coach Dalton, Coach Lisa Forbes, and Coach Guilliams. Each one of them has helped me prepare for the next level in sports even though I am not playing softball,” she said. “Just having high expectations of us players and holding us accountable for our play and actions on and off the field as a student athlete helps you get ready for next level sports.” Both Patterson and Forbes have expressed how much they are going to miss her coaching Dudley, but they are excited to see her at the next level. “Brogan will be truly missed. She was a great leader and mentor to our program, and with her personality and passion for basketball, I believe she will be a program charger for the Panthers,” said Patterson. “As a player and person, I will always remember Brogan’s contagious smile and witty comebacks,” said Forbes. “I am very proud to say I got to coach Brogan Dudley.”

Soccer was a saving grace for FCHS graduate Escobar By William Seidel

F

or a lot of student athletes, sports can be their saving grace. To add context to that statement, sports can help kids do well in school, help them stay out of trouble and teach them valuable life lessons. A prime example of this is Franklin County High School (FCHS) graduate and former boys’ soccer player Christian Escobar. Playing soccer since he was little, Escobar said the game was like a “calling” to him and it all just felt natural. “Whenever a game started, it felt like I was at home, like as if it was meant for me to be on the field with a ball at my feet,” he said. Escobar noted that he did play other sports growing up, such as football and wrestling, but as he got older, he focused on soccer. He noted that soccer has always been his favorite sport, and he credits watching his family play as to why he became so fond of the sport. Starting out playing in the rec league, Escobar noted he faced some hurdles with him being a “chunky” kid at the time, but that didn’t stop him from working hard and enjoying the game at a young age. He then joined a travel team called the Franklin County Stars, and William Seidel/Lake Life

Franklin County High School soccer player Christian Escobar graduated and will pursue a working career as a plumber and hopes to one day starts his own plumbing company.

throughout the years, he was slimming down, and his skills were becoming better. Escobar knew he had improved, but it wasn’t until his sophomore year when he realized his hard work had started to pay off. His sophomore year is when FCHS Boys Soccer Head Coach Bradley Lang decided to move Escobar up and join the varsity ranks as an underclassman. However, Escobar didn’t meet Lang’s grade policy, which resulted in him not being able to play his sophomore year, but he could still practice with the team. It was at that moment Escobar found the motivation to try much harder in the classroom. Lang’s wife, Slone Lang, who is a teacher for Franklin County Public Schools, decided that she wanted to help Escobar improve in the classroom. Throughout high school, she helped him outside of class to get the required school work done in order for him to be eligible to play. It wasn’t just school work that Escobar was determined to improve on. Throughout practice his sophomore year, he gave 100 percent effort each practice, always striving to improve and learn. Yes, Escobar’s plate was really full. Getting caught up in his school work, striving to improve his soccer skills for the next year, and working outside of school. In hindsight, not many high school teens can go through that workload, but Escobar didn’t care. During that time, he just put his head down and worked to get back to where he loved to be, which was on the soccer field. That’s when it all paid off for Escobar the next year. His junior year, not only did Escobar become eligible to play, but Coach Lang penciled him as a starter. “That might be the highlight of my soccer career,” he said. “I just thought to myself it was just amazing what hard work can accomplish.” Lang was happy and proud of Escobar for achieving in the classroom, but he also was happy that Escobar was out on the field playing his favorite sport. He noted that Escobar was the most physically strong soccer player he has had in a while, and when that is combined with his work ethic, willingness to learn, and doing what needs to be done to improve, it made him that much more valuable to the team. Escobar’s work ethic is what caught Lang’s attention during his time coaching him. “Christian’s work ethic will allow him to be successful in anything he desires to do,” he said. So, what does Escobar plan to do? Well, he plans to go straight into work. Escobar mentioned that he has picked up a passion for

LakeLife L akeLife

plumbing and said that he has always liked hands-on work. He also said that it was a great trade to get into because it will keep him busy, which is what he loves, and he hopes to one day own his own plumbing business. Although Escobar’s soccer career is over, he will forever be grateful for all the sport did for him. He said had it not been for soccer growing up, he probably was going to be on the streets doing irresponsible things, but soccer saved him from that lifestyle. Instead, it pushed him and kept his head on straight. It was the main reason he tried harder in the classroom. True, Escobar had to put in the work and dedication to his studies, but he will be the first to tell you that Lang and his wife were the reason he was able to do it in the first place. “To be honest, both Coach Lang and his wife, Mrs. Lang, were the main reason I graduated,” he said. “I’ll never forget what they done for me; they always pushed me to be better and to stay on top of my school work. I know I wouldn’t be here without them.” Escobar also said that Lang was “a lot like a father figure” who taught him right from wrong, and he and his wife have taught him so much, such as being respectful and kind. For Lang specifically, he has a lot of great memories with Escobar. However, there is one memory in particular that he will never forget. “I remember in a game, he pulled off a move I have never seen him do before, and it caused him to beat his defender badly,” Lang said. “I asked him about it when he came off, and he told me he had been watching YouTube. I will never forget that comment.” Though that might be his favorite memory of Escobar, Lang will tell anyone his proudest moment was seeing him succeed at everything he put his mind to as a student-athlete. “Christian has always wanted to be successful in the classroom, and with a little help he was able to do meet his goals. As an educator and coach, having a student reach their dreams is the best compliment you can receive,” he said. Lang also added that Escobar was the only senior captain on this year’s team, and with his help, they had a good chance to be very successful this year. He believed in Escobar, more than anybody could imagine, and that’s why Lang will always remember the impact his now former player had on him. “I am a better coach and person for knowing him,” he said. “I will miss him greatly.”

The majority of the south shore of the lake lies in Franklin County while a small portion, including access to the dam, lies in Pittsylvania County. Bedford County makes up the northern half of the lake with the Roanoke River as the dividing line. The lake has become a popular recreation spot and has also experienced significant development in the last decade. It is the largest lake contained entirely within the Commonwealth of Virginia. ~ Wikipedia

Lee, Divers reflect on what could’ve been for FCHS boy’s lacrosse By William Seidel

T

he Franklin County High School (FCHS) boy’s lacrosse team was going to field eight seniors this past spring, but only half of them had playing experience. That’s right — only four lacrosse players had game-time experience. One of these seniors was Dalton Lee, who started playing lacrosse in eighth grade. This was going to be Lee’s third and final year playing lacrosse after taking a two-year break, but this final rodeo was going to be special for one particular reason for Lee. That reason was his best friend and now FCHS graduate, Ethan Divers. Growing up as best friends since they were young, Lee and Divers have never played on the same sports team. That was ready to change this past spring until the COVID-19 pandemic

54 | Lake Life 2020 | SIX

put a damper on it. For both of them, the loss of that opportunity still stings. “I was really excited because Ethan and I have never played on a team before. We have a good connection, and I thought that would have worked well on the field,” Lee said. Divers had the same response, stating that it was going to be “extremely special” to finally be able to play with his best friend. He also said that even though he had very limited experience playing lacrosse, he could tell that it was already his favorite sport and wished that he had started playing at a much younger age. “Ethan and I have lots of fun together, but we also try to encourage and support each other,” Lee added. “He doubted his skills, so we spent time working together outside of the regular practice time.” Before lacrosse, Lee was committed to baseball and started playing the sport when he was four years old. He fondly remembers playing the game a lot and going to see Major League Baseball games with his family at Camden Yards and Yankee Stadium. Although baseball was special to Lee, he knew his time was limited playing it. “I had a good arm and was typically one of the fastest kids on

the team. But I wasn’t a great hitter, so I knew I wouldn’t make the middle school team,” Lee said. Around that same time is when he became friends in middle school with some boys who were already playing lacrosse, and they invited him to join. The first day Lee stepped on the field for his first day of practice is when he immediately fell in love with the sport. He loved it so much that he spent a lot of time working on his lacrosse stick skills to try and improve during his free time. He also noted that even when his family went on vacation at the beach, he still took his lacrosse sticks with him and practiced. Lee played his eighth-grade year and freshman year, but due to personal reasons, he wasn’t able to play his sophomore and junior year. Realizing this was his final year to play his favorite sport, he worked harder than before to make up for the two years he didn’t play so he could get back on the team. For Divers, it’s a much different situation. To start out, he only played one sport since he was a child, and that was sandlot football. He started playing sandlot football at age seven and continued playing for five years. He never played another sport after that and choose

Lake Life 2020 |

to work outside of school. However, his athletic potential was too promising to not try out for another sport, let alone play. In a better-late-than-never situation, Divers decided he wanted to give sports one last try before moving on into adulthood and thought it was best to play a sport in which he could fully display his athletic abilities and play with his best friend. Similar to Lee, he fell in love with the sport immediately. He continued to practice his stick skills from there, determined to get up to respectable speed before the season started and to learn all the important details of his position. Divers was known to be one of the fastest players on the lacrosse team and having “very good” agility. If there is any doubt about that, FCHS Boy’s Lacrosse Coach Tyler Poage stated that he was looking forward to using Divers as a defensive midfielder with his ability to cover the field with his speed and matchup one-on-one with the opposing player. All that was lacking was his stick skills, but Poage didn’t see that as a problem, as Divers was a quick learner. “Ethan could have been a great midfielder for us. Lacrosse is somewhat unique in that it requires the athleticism of a field sport while also having a strong skill component with the stick skills,” Poage said. “I was looking forward to working with Ethan on the skill component while he absolutely would hold his own with his footwork,” he added. As far as his plans for Lee, Poage said he was looking forward to using him as a true midfielder, mentioning that although he was absent for two years, Lee was still “ahead of the curve” and was looking forward to working with him as he handled the responsibilities of both offense and defense as a midfielder. Both Lee and Divers had to work hard to get on the team, and their head coach saw great work ethic and determination in both of them, so that very well could have translated to success on the field for them personally and the team as a whole. Lee and Divers will tell anyone that they believed their first and only season together was going to be one to remember. They both said it was a tough pill to swallow not knowing how their senior year of playing lacrosse could’ve been after having early success in practice and scrimmages. “It was extremely disappointing, because our team was looking good,” Lee said. “We had some work to do, but all the guys were excited to be playing together, and we were committed to ending our high school time on a positive note.” “It was a very disappointing that we weren’t able to continue our season this year,” Divers added. “Our team was looking very promising.” Lee and Divers have grown up and spent a lot of time together, but

now they both will be taking different career paths. For Lee, he plans to take a few classes at Virginia Western Community College and then transfer to Virginia Tech to study mechanical engineering. For Divers, he doesn’t plan to go to college as of right now or go into the work field. Instead, he has decided he will enlist in the United States Army. He has been doing Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) for three years at FCHS to help him prepare. Although Lee and Divers will go separate ways in life for their careers, both have said they will always be in contact and still remain close friends regardless of where they are in life.

Sports Spotlight:

Blake, Bates, Mayhew believe they had a great shot at winning state title By William Seidel

“D

on’t talk the talk unless you can walk the walk” — or support what you say not by words but through actions. That was the motto from the Staunton River High School (SRHS) baseball team, which was coming off a 16-7 record last year and was returning key players while moving up a now talented junior class. It was a year of high expectations for the team, which was not to be taken lightly. The expectations this year was not just to win at the district or regional level but to win the state tournament. These goals weren’t expected from the fans or the coaches but from the seniors themselves. All five seniors on the 2020 SRHS baseball team felt that their last year playing together was going to be the year for them to go all the way. Of these five graduates, three of them will continue their careers at the collegiate level. Those three are pitcher/infielder Eddie Blake, infielder/pitcher Collin Bates and infielder/pitcher Jared Mayhew. “The reason why we felt very confident about our chances of winning state this year is because we as a team were all very dedicated,” Blake said. “The whole team got along, everyone had a role, and they did not argue or complain about their position on the team. Personally, we would have won state this year, no doubt about it.” His two former teammates felt the same way. “There was definitely a lot of talk about that. Everyone was doing the little things right, and we had been playing together for a long time, which really helped. I personally believe we

would’ve had a really good shot at the state tournament this year if we would’ve had the chance to play,” Mayhew said. Bates noted that the path was going to be daunting, but he liked his team’s chances of going all the way because of how committed they were. “With our talent we had on the team and our defensive talents, we did have a huge shot of winning it all, but it’s never easy. I will say that our team this year had outstanding dedication and work ethic. Every day we had conditioning; almost everyone would be there unless they were playing basketball or football. Every time we stepped on the field, we gave it everything we had simply because we wanted to be the best and wanted to win,” Bates said. When it comes to all three, baseball was their lifestyle, and even that might be an understatement. Blake first started when he was 5 years old playing T-ball, then moved to little league, and then got more serious about the game of baseball when he joined a travel team at 9 years old. He has been playing travel ball ever since. When he got to the high school level, Blake was moved up to junior varsity as an eighth grader and then moved up again and played varsity all four years of high school. Blake also earned himself a spot on the second-team Region 3D as a pitcher and first-team Blue Ridge District as a second baseman after his junior year. The summer before his senior year, he was offered to play baseball at Concord University, and

Staunton River High School baseball player Eddie Blake will continue his baseball career at Concord University.

62 | Lake Life 2020 | SIX

Blake decided that the Division II school was where he wanted to play his next four years of baseball. He signed his National Letter of Intent to Concord this past November. “Concord just felt right, personally. They were very interested in me, and they had what I wanted academically, plus their baseball program is very talented. It was a win-win situation both academically and sportswise,” he said. Looking at Blake’s pitching numbers, he put up impressive stats against stellar competition. Throwing 31.1 innings, Blake recorded 29 strikeouts and had an earned run average of 2.46, according to Concord University’s athletic site. His now former Head Coach Brian Divers said that Blake’s versatility and his drive to win is what he believed made him valuable to his team. Divers also believes that will help his former player succeed at Concord University. “Eddie is a real competitive athlete. He is very driven to be the best he can be and to give his team the best chance,” Divers said. “Eddie had played multiple positions over the years for us, which in my opinion, adds to his value. As a team, we could put him in multiple places to put us in a good position each game,” he included.

For Bates, just like Blake, he started playing T-ball at age 5 and played little league until he was in the third grade. Bates then started to play travel ball and has continued playing it since. Once Bates got to the high school level his freshman year, it only took a couple of games before he got promoted to the varsity level as a freshman after the original starter had injured his knee. He had stayed in that position until his junior year, and that’s when he got the chance to become a pitcher. He originally was a pitcher when he played in middle school but didn’t have the strength or velocity for the high school level. That changed when he grew taller and became stronger from conditioning. Bates found a passion for pitching so much, that he decided that’s where he wanted to continue to play. Bates was recruited by Concord, Ferrum and Lynchburg. He ultimately decided to stay close to home and continue his career at Ferrum College. “My junior year is when they started talking to me and wanted me to come for a visit to see the campus and talk about the baseball program. So I went, and I loved everything about Ferrum. I liked the campus, the coaches and the way they ran their program. It just kind of felt right,” Bates said.

Staunton River High School baseball player Collin Bates will continue his baseball career at Ferrum College.

William Seidel/Lake Life

Lake Life 2020 |

Divers believes that Bates’ mindset to not get rattled and always help the team will help him see success at Ferrum. “Collin is the type of player that gives you the same results every day. It doesn’t matter whether it was at practice or a game, Collin would come every day with the same attitude and effort. Collin doesn’t show a lot of emotion and doesn’t get too high or low. That always to me was one of my favorite things about Collin: nothing bothered him,” Divers said. He also mentioned that he could ask Bates to do anything or play any position, and he was going to do it without asking any questions. By playing multiple positions and playing them well, Bates earned first-team Region 3D as a utility player and first-team Blue Ridge District as a pitcher after his junior year. Mayhew, also like Blake and Bates, started playing T-ball when he was 5 years old and continued with little league until he was 10 years old. At the age of 11 is when Mayhew decided to play travel ball with a local team. When he turned 13, he moved to another travel team called Velocity and then at the age of 14 played a summer season with the Virginia Reds from Danville. He later finished his traveling career with the Invaders baseball club.

SIX

| 63

Mayhew didn’t play on the varsity level until he became a junior, but don’t let that fool you. He was one of more lethal bats in the whole lineup during his time on varsity, batting over .400 with 26 runs batted in. Mayhew then got the attention of multiple colleges but decided he wanted to take his skills to Mary Baldwin University. “I chose Mary Baldwin because they conveyed that I would be a key player and have many opportunities to succeed even during my first year playing. I had several other colleges looking at me, but Mary Baldwin offered the best opportunity and felt like the best fit for me,” Mayhew said. Divers said that Mayhew is kind of the “quiet” type and was always in a good mood during practices and games. He also said that Mayhew was all in on any position he wanted to place him in. “He just loves the game of baseball and loves to improve. Jared has been a versatile player for us as well. Playing third, catcher and pitcher, it didn’t matter what line up spot we had him in; he was all in,” Divers said. “Jared has a calm to him under the bright lights. His ability to stay calm in big moments pay dividends for us during his career.”

Staunton River High School baseball player Jared Mayhew will continue his baseball career at Mary Baldwin University.

William Seidel/Lake Life

64 | Lake Life 2020 | SIX

One of those big moments for Mayhew came against their biggest rival William Byrd High School, where he hit a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory. Blake, Bates and Mayhew said that of all their memories playing at SRHS, that one might be their favorite. Divers has a lot of praise for his three former players and will be quick to give them the credit for the team’s success, but for them personally, their former head coach meant everything to them on and off the field, and they will tell anyone that he is one of the main reasons why they are the players they are now. “Oh, buddy, I am definitely going to miss him,” Blake said. “I am going to miss the exceptionally long stories he had told, the rough practices, winning games with him as my coach. Coach Divers was a very big piece of my career, and I am very grateful to have had him as my coach and mentor throughout my high school career.” “I will miss Coach Divers extremely; he has helped me tremendously through my career,” Bates said. “He always pushed me and my teammates to be the best we can be on and off the field. If any of us did anything disrespectful, we would run. We could be doing everything perfect on the field and baseballwise, but if we said anything or we did anything that made us immature, then we would run. He always taught us to be a good baseball player but be an even better person.” “Coach Divers has had a huge impact on my baseball career,” Mayhew said. “More importantly than baseball, he taught me many life lessons through baseball that have helped shape me into the man I am today. He has always been a person that I can reach out to for help or advice whenever it is needed.” For Divers personally, these three brought everything he wanted in his baseball program: examples like attitude and effort. “These three players have exemplified that over the years they have been involved in our program. I think with any team, you have to have good chemistry, and these three guys allowed us to have great chemis-

try, and that for sure has added to our success,” Divers said. “All three have great work ethic and would stay after practice for extra batting practice, ground balls and helping teammates work on their game.” Although Divers isn’t one who likes to speculate on whether the team could have won the state tournament, he believes they had a lot of pieces to the puzzle and they could have had a “very successful” season.

As for the three graduates’ plans outside of high school and what they will pursue in college, Blake will study sports medicine and hopes to become a chiropractor; Bates will study criminal justice with hopes to pursue the law enforcement field and become a police officer and then move up to become a detective; and Mayhew will study education and hopes to become a special education teacher.

‘Roger the Wonder Cat’ makes book series By William Seidel

A

Moneta woman’s short story about her pet cat Roger has hit the shelves in a literal sense. Titled “Roger the Wonder Cat,” it is among 101 tales of cats in the book series “Chicken Soup for the Soul.” Valerie Archual, the author of the tale, isn’t new to seeing her work published. She published her first children’s book, “Tom Tom and Rose,” back in 2016 and followed it with another children’s book called “Carter’s Star City Trolley Ride,” published in 2019. As for the book series Chicken Soup for the Soul, Archual was featured in two publications titled “The Wonder of Christmas” and “Life Lessons from the Cat” before her latest entry in “The Magic of Cats.” Her latest story about Roger in this series is bound to tug at the heartstrings for readers who come across it. In a broad description of the tale, Archual and Roger met at a local library event called “Caturday” which is a monthly children’s reading event that is partnered with the local animal shelter. At this event, cats are brought to the library, and

children at the library read out loud to the animals to help improve their reading skills. It was at this event where Archual met Roger and instantly formed a bond. Prior, Archual was in the process of finding her other cat, Tom Tom, a new companion to replace the former one who passed away. Needless to say, Archual ended up taking Roger home, but he quickly fell ill to a rare disease known as cytauxzoonosis which is a protozoal organism that is life threaten-

ing and, in most cases, fatal. Roger ended up surviving and was known at the local animal hospital as “Roger the Wonder Cat.” “He’s really a miracle,” Archual said. A copy of the book can be found on Amazon, and signed copies can be found on Archual’s website valeriearchual.com for $15. A portion of Archual’s royalties from sales will be donated to the Bedford Animal Hospital to help pets with medical care, etc., until they are adopted.

We are pleased to announce that beginning September 1st, 2020 we are expanding our hours to five days a week, Monday-Friday! We are ready for all things autumn! Beautiful colors, football, and the sounds of wind blowing the leaves. Timothy Bratton, HIS and wife Veronica are looking forward to helping you hear and understand the announcers on television, your phone calls, and your loved ones again. Tim and Veronica know firsthand the importance of hearing since both of their mothers have hearing loss as well as Tim. They understand how important it is to the whole family to be able to communicate and the frustration when there is a bump in the communication due to hearing loss.

We continue to pray for the safety of our patients and community.

Call our office today to schedule your complimentary hearing evaluation. SOUNDZ LYNCHBURG

T

he Bible says “He that hath EAR, let them HEAR.” Timothy Bratton, H.I.S has been helping that come to fruition for people for over twenty years. Now, he and his wife Veronica are looking forward to their third year in Lynchburg as the new owners of the Soundz Lynchburg location. Tim and Veronica are committed to continuing the mission of helping people hear and understand their loved ones with the best technology, for the best price, and with the best service.

Fairway Village at Westlake 13335-A Booker T. Washington Hwy. Hardy, VA 24101 Tim knows first hand the importance of your loved ones hearing and understanding you. His own mother and sister each have profound hearing loss. He spent several years with his mother smiling and pretending she heard and understood the family. This is one of the reasons he chose hearing as a profession, he wanted to help his family. Tim treats all of his patients as he would want his mother treated. Our best advertisement has been our happy patients.

After having been a Liberty University student in the late 70’s it has been a profound experience for Tim to be back in Lynchburg and seeing Jerry’s vision being fulfilled. Tim recalls the days of singing “I want that mountain” and now he gets to see the Rise of LU Athletics to FBS status.

540-912-0128

Most importantly, Tim and Veronica give all the glory for Soundz’s success to Jesus. When you do business HIS way you are doing it the right way.

Publishing 10 Issues in 2020! I have been so pleased with the results from my advertising in the Lake Life Magazine. I am able to connect to the Smith Mountain Lake community and surrounding areas through a respected medium. The Lake Life Magazine offers something of interest for every reader. The cover is always attractive and reflects the beauty of the lake. The content, paired with a distribution area and high level of circulation, makes it a wonderful place to grow and promote my Real Estate business.

Lake Life Magazine combines all the best things about SML - the lake, the community, and the local businesses. It’s always been a phenomenal vehicle for telling your story to those who are local, as well as, the large number of tourists and guests that visit our beautiful community each year. Fabulous publication that is large enough to be relevant but small enough to cherish our roots!
