Growing Up Jefferson Lions Club Swimming Pool

Come on In, the Water’s Fine

As summers go, this one was going pretty well. Of course, I only had the previous six I had lived with which to compare. And, honestly, I didn’t remember that much about the first few. But, life was good in Jefferson that June day. The weather was warm, the sky was clear, and the possibilities for enjoying summer seemed endless. As a soon to be seven year old, I knew that I had successfully navigated the rigors, trials and tribulations of first grade at the Big School on the hill. And, I had never once felt the need to repeat my hooky adventure from kindergarten. Of course, Bill Ford, my partner in the ill-fated escape, was in Mrs. Nellie Bender’s first grade classroom, and the luck of the draw had placed me in Mrs. Fannie Myers’. No matter. Summer was here at last and new adventures awaited.

However, as I stood on the hot, concrete edge of the pool, being urged by my swimming teacher to enter the water head first, I thought summer vacation’s glowing reputation might have been overblown. I mean, swimming teacher? Swimming lessons? Sounded a little bit too much like the classroom environment I had so recently left behind. And these weren’t individual lessons. There were probably at least a dozen six,

seven and eight year olds on that ledge, so peer pressure and potential embarrassment factored in this equation also. Plus, our mothers were there, observing and urging full participation, so there was no backing out. If you took swimming lessons, you will remember the drill—bend at the waist, head down, hands together pointed toward the water, and topple off. Easy. Sim-

Gerrit Wolsink Headlines Diamond Don’s 21st AHRMA Vintage Motocross

If this race is on your bucket list, start making plans now for Diamond Don’s 21st Annual AHRMA National Vintage Motocross September 6-10, at Diamond Don RV Park & Event Center located one mile from Jefferson. Diamond Don Rainey reaches his milestone 80th birthday and will be retiring in 2024, so this will be the last Diamond Don Extravaganza.

The weekend will be full of motocross legends racing, including several inductees to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. More than 1000 people attend this annual event from all over the world. It is the largest vintage motocross race in the country.

Gerrit Wolsink is traveling from his home in Netherlands to be the event legend. Wolsink was five-time United States 500 Grand Prix winner in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1979. Gerrit joined the Suzuki Grand prix team in 1973, as Roger DeCoster’s teammate. He also raced against Heikki Mikkola, four-time World Champion, and Brad Lackey. While he never won a World Championship, he came very close many times. The Flying Dutchman retired in 1979.

Here is your chance to visit with and race against some of your idols: Kevin Windham, Blake Wharton, John Short, Barry Higgins, Steve Wise, Brad Lackey, Trampas Parker

(local Louisiana boy), Trey Jorski, Guy Cooper. Legend Gerrit Wolsink will be on hand for some “bench racing”.

Diamond Don Rainey, event promoter, started racing in 1968. By 1973, Rainey was competing in AMA national events and raced in the first night race at the Houston Astrodome. He retired in his 30’s, but re-started the second round of his racing career in 1996 and races his motorcycles at vintage events around the country. Today, he still builds his own bikes and races in the AHRMA 70+ class on his 1974 Honda Elsinore or a Brad Lackey look-alike 400cc CZ.

The event starts off on Wednesday with a charity golf outing to Cypress Hills in Waskom. It’s a four-some scramble and all are welcome. Proceeds will benefit Mission 22, Foundation, which provides support to Veterans and their families through a compre-

Vendors and exhibitors will be present at the symposium and there will be ample time in the schedule for viewing. The program will include our traditional raffle of Civil War books and ephemera,

plus a silent auction.

ple. Not a chance. One by one, our dives turned into a stepping-off, arms flailing, heads up, feet reaching for purchase belly buster, that most dreaded of aquatic mishaps. Obviously, Jefferson produced no future Olympians that year, certainly not in this class anyway. Sputtering, gasping and choking on over-chlorinated, chemically unbalanced pool water was a tough way to start the day. And it did indeed teach us all a lesson to remember. While we overcame our fear of water, it instilled in us another fear—a fear of drowning. Most of us persevered, though, continued our lessons, practiced our newly-learned skills, and became swimmers.

The scene of this near-death experience was the Jefferson Lions Club Swimming Pool. It was located at the extreme west

end of West Whelan Street, one block west of Highway 59 North, also known as North Walcott Street. The site today is occupied by the Jefferson Independent School District’s Transportation Building and parking lot for its school bus fleet. The pool was constructed by the Work Projects Administration, or the previously named Works Progress Administration (WPA), sometime in the late 1930’s. It was originally part of a City Park Complex that ran from Tuttle Street to Ferris Street (now MLK), and from West Harrison Street north to the swimming pool. It included the old high school football field, a concrete tennis court, picnic tables and some playground equipment. Jefferson Elementary School occupies most of this area now. The picnic tables as well as the bath house were

constructed out of native iron ore rock, a hallmark of WPA projects in this area. An asphalt parking lot was located east of the pool for its patrons, and is probably the same asphalt apron in use today for parking the school buses.

The pool itself was bell-shaped, with the shallow end being the top of the bell to the south. The side walls then flared out continuously toward the northern, or deep, end. At its widest point, the deep end was probably 40 yards across and sixteen feet deep. From the steps in the shallow end to the northern end was approximately 60 yards. An unusual feature was a round,

concrete island in the middle which rose about one foot above the water and was twenty feet in diameter. It was an obvious attraction for sunbathers, but only for those who didn’t mind getting splashed by the “cannonballers” who made it their life’s work to splash sunbathers. Benches, some covered, were present for observers (mothers) on the sidewalk around the facility. In addition, there were two lifeguard stands, and two diving boards, one being a 3 foot board and the other 50 feet (really 10 feet, only looked 50 if you were on it). Unless you actually saw the pool, these dimensions may be hard to picture. What anyone

would agree on, however, was this pool was huge. It held approximately 450,000 gallons of water, and by comparison, a typical back yard pool capacity is about 25,000 gallons.

The bath house, or pavilion, which ran east and west and was nearly the same width as the pool, lay at the extreme north end of the pool. It had a central lobby, under roof, accessed from the outside through arched openings. It also housed a concession area for equipment rental (masks, swim fins, inner tubes, and beach balls), admissions and refreshments. Baskets could also be rented and stored here for clothes, purses, or anything else that would fit in a basket, I suppose. There were also two large dressing rooms in the bath house,

with stalls, showers with cold water only, and bathroom facilities. The boys’ dressing room was on the west side, and the girls’ on the east side.

If you were a fellow pool attendee, I know the description of it probably isn’t necessary. But, for those of you who weren’t as fortunate, I thought I needed to attempt one. If for nothing else, just to let you how very fortunate we kids of the 1950’s and 60’s were to have it. From Splash Day (usually the first Saturday after the end of school) to” shut down” around Labor Day, we swam and played. Well, except on Mondays and stormy days when the pool was closed. It opened at 1PM and closed at 6PM, and kids were lined up waiting for the gates to open. Oh, we still attended the Strand Theater, just not quite

as much in the summer. On a hot, East Texas summer day before most homes and businesses were air-conditioned, cool water was quite an attraction. For an admission price of twenty-five cents or a family season ticket purchased for ten dollars, water fun was an attraction that was too good to pass up. One final addition to the Jefferson community social scene was the Miss Jefferson Pageant, sponsored by the Jefferson Lions Club. Each summer, the Lions would erect a walkway from the west bank to the island for the contestants to present themselves to the judges. They worked on that access just like a company of Seabees establishing a beachhead. For the purposes of my story, it would have been terrific if I had witnessed that walkway collapsing and dumping someone in the pool. But, it never happened. They had too much pride in their work, and the access always held. A little later in our young lives, however, we noticed an additional attraction appearing at the pool of which we had previously been unaware and gave even more value to the price of admission.

Two distinct versions of memories come to mind when I summon my recollections of the Jefferson Lions Club Swimming Pool. I have those very early ones, learning

how to swim and dive off the edge, being instructed by Sue Watson and Kay Butler. Kay and her husband Roy were managers of the pool then. My friends and I would attend at that time looking forward to the games of dodge ball and swimming pool baseball. Or maybe we’d lie out and talk about the Milwaukee Braves or the New York Yankees, or our Little League baseball game from the night before. Everybody knew you had to rest on game day, so no one swam on Thursday afternoons during the season. The later memories start about the time we entered Junior High School and that additional attraction I mentioned was girls, more specifically girls in swim suits. As Lewis Grizzard said, “there was enough skin there to upholster a Greyhound bus.” Well, that’s a little bit of an exaggeration of what we saw; after all, this was mid-twentieth century America and Jefferson, and modesty was the norm. Nevertheless, it was an exposure we did not see at school or church. And we noticed. And we liked it. And nothing was ever the same again. My next door neighbors, Harry and Earline McDonald, had become pool managers by that time, and that familiarity along with my Senior Lifesaving certificate, enabled me to work

as a lifeguard for two glorious summers after I graduated high school. The tan was only one of the benefits of the job, as lifeguards were in a prime position to welcome visiting girl cousins and newcomers to Jefferson. We were sort of an unofficial Welcome Wagon. We did take the job seriously, however, and we were responsible. As far as I know, there was never a fatality at the Lions Club Pool, certainly not the two years I worked there.

The Jefferson Lions Club Swimming Pool closed for the last time around 1970, a victim of rising maintenance and repair costs and declining attendance. The bath house was torn down and the pool filled in. My last time to attend the pool as a swimmer was the last time I turned in my life-

guard whistle in 1967, although I will admit to visiting that parking lot a few times before and after that for an unconnected nighttime activity. The pool served its purpose though. It kept us occupied for hours on end during the day and it exercised our bodies as well as providing a sort of social networking. But that later version of memories I mentioned didn’t end at sunset. There was no school the next day in the summer, so no homework. The Simmons sisters didn’t allow talking at the “show”, so we needed more. We needed to grow and socialize. Our legal ability to drive when we were fourteen gave us more freedom and that required an accessible outlet. And in Jefferson, at least, that outlet was named Dairy Queen.

hensive approach of outreach, events, and programs promoting long-term wellness.

On Thursday morning, riders can participate in 3rd Annual Dual Sport Adventure Ride through the back roads of Piney Woods. All street legal modern dual sport bikes are welcome. The 2nd Annual Jack Thompson Memorial Tiddler Ride will take off Thursday afternoon, for 100cc and 125cc Tiddler Bikes. Proceeds from these two events will benefit Jefferson Adopt-A-Cop to help law enforcement officers in Marion County pay for required equipment that is not paid for by their employer.

Vintage cross country and trials are on Friday and include the Huffman Memorial Modern Trials Support Class. Saturday features vintage racing with post-vintage on

Sunday. You will want to race or watch the 100cc/200cc Revenge Races on Saturday and Sunday during intermission sponsored by BA Motorsports and Northwest Maico CZ.

The XR200 race will be the coolest to watch. Come see international champ, Trampas Parker, race against his son Ricky, and brother Heith. They usually end up placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd for a Parker family trifecta. But with Kevin Windham, Brandon Glenn, Blake Wharton, and John Short on the line, anything can happen. Trampas made history as the first American to win two World Motocross Championships, in 1989 and 1991.
