ne autumn Sunday, while wedding guests dozed in their rooms and early birds hit the gym, I saw a gorilla and zoo keeper stroll on to the first tee of the Bernard Hunt course and 75 members in spandex set off on two wheels to Farleigh, just another day at Foxhills. Perhaps that's why my family is glad to still be here after 30 years. No two days are the same, and the constant involvement of our members make it a pleasure. I hope you enjoy this celebratory edition of The Fox. I think it perfectly illustrates the variety we might take for granted and if variety is the spice of life, then I declare Foxhills to be the vindaloo of clubs! I bumped into a member leaving the healthspa recently. I asked how he felt and without hesitation the reply came: "better than when I arrived." Having your mission statement quoted back to you is both unexpected and satisfying. It remains our guiding light, one that our new General Manager, Jason Adams, is keen to build upon. Inside you have a chance to hear from Jason and, more importantly, you'll see him walking the floor at the Club. I am grateful for all the contributions to this edition from members, colleagues and my family who offer their personal reflections on the last 30 years. The past is a comfortable and familiar place, the future is exciting. Between now and 2014 we will invest a further ÂŁ800,000 in improving the facilities and Jason is setting up a raft of training programmes to improve your enjoyment. Looking further ahead, the initial conversations with Runnymede Chief Planning Officer were very positive. Our ambitions have the potential to keep the Club at the top of the leaderboard. Rest assured that you and I will shape the Club's future, just as we did for the healthspa and Youth Club, as we have done for the last 30 years.

Meet our new Golf Captain Paul Suchley My main aim as 2013-14 Golf Captain is: To encourage members (and guests) to play as quickly as possible – 15 minutes a hole (14 if you stop at Halfway House) makes for four and a half hours for a Four Ball. We know that visitors and societies who don't know the courses well would struggle to achieve that target but members can set that as a regular playing goal. Earliest memories of Foxhills Pam Hayton, Director "I said: 'You’ve gotta be kidding?!' when Ian told me he’d bought Foxhills in 1983. His answer was simple and so true: “Honey, it can only go up.” He then allowed Marc to have a New Year’s party and said: “Son, just keep the walls standing!” it showed what grand plans he had, even in the early days.”

years is a lifetime. Each month I write birthday cards to my colleagues. Today was the turn of Jo, our Marketing Manager, who turned 30 in October. She's the same age to the month as my family's relationship with Foxhills. So when Jo was skipping around the playground, Dad was getting to grips with the exciting opportunity of hosting the Bernard Cribbins Charity Days, asking Bernard Hunt to establish a Foundation for gifted golfers and designing a course for beginners in front of the Manor House. Then, with the addition of 16 bedrooms, The Summerhouse Restaurant and the gym, as Jo dealt with adolescence, Foxhills was fast becoming like the resorts Dad had seen travelling in America's Sun Belt. As Jo left university and started her career, our Club grew into a community of several thousand members and 200 colleagues, occupying 200,000 square feet of buildings, raising hundreds of thousands annually for charities and hosting everything from the PGA to junior Judo, from Olympic athletes to Aqua Aerobics. I could list the highlights, but perhaps it's more interesting to list the surprises, the things I didn't seeing coming. Dad always wanted Foxhills to be a family Club, but we never foresaw that our largest category of members would be children, and that we'd have a Youth Club dedicated to

looking after over 1000 little members. We offer our family members and residents over 15 hours of free supervised activities per week, including after-school clubs, weekend clubs, pre-school rugby, football, gymnastics and swimming.
he Youth Club at Foxhills is always looking to increase and improve the activities for our junior members, so do make sure to check with the Youth Club reception for any additional activities and events including Bush Craft Day, Undersea Explorers and Karate.

Kids Club The Kids Club host a huge range of children's activities and professional sports coaching throughout the year at our Club. This includes 15 hours of free supervised activities exclusively for our members and residents. This consists of pre-school, after-school and weekend clubs. Junior Tennis A comprehensive junior programme starting from 3 years old based on a traffic light system of 3 stages – red, orange and green which run in line with the school term. Alongside this, we offer holiday camp tennis courses. Appropriate court sizes and equipment allows each player to learn the game in a way that is suitable to their physical size, emotional maturity and skill level. Ages range from 3 to 16. Complimentary junior match play provides a chance to compete and improve their LTA rating. We have teams competing in various competitions from mini tennis to national club league. Richard is a Surrey Futures County Coach and assists with the coaching of the Surrey Ladies First Team while Greg is a leading Surrey Futures County Coach, the Assistant Head Coach for Surrey Ladies First Team and is the Surrey County Coach Coordinator. Both are passionate about the game and teaching Junior Golf. JOLF is a highly effective Junior Golf coaching programme developing a much broader range of skills such as on-course play, putting, chipping and driving and the fundamental movement skills required in golf and other sports. As the golfers are teeing off, spa guests are deep in relaxation and visitors are enjoying delicious lunches in The Manor House, there is a small corner of Foxhills that is bursting with energy and creativity. Situated in the Youth Club, our Nursery is so much more than a safe and convenient place for our younger members and guests to play while parents visit the gym.
The Team Anne Hanshaw and her lovely team ensure that every day is filled with fun and varied activities to keep the little ones engaged and entertained. From painting and sticking, biscuit and cake decorating, a walk on the trim trail or an indoor obstacle course, the children are always busy being creative and learning through play.
Did You Know? Every six weeks a theme is chosen and carried through the activities at the Foxhills Nursery. As this magazine goes to print, autumn and Bonfire night are providing inspiration for the children to paint fabulous pictures bursting with colour and search for beautiful leaves to make a collage. Most mornings the children will enjoy ‘music and movement’ followed by role play, dressing up, story time or cooking.
Home From Home Whether they are regular visitors or making a one off visit, every child is greeted with a smile and is immediately made to feel at home. The day’s activities are tailored to the number and age of children that are visiting, so from 12 weeks to seven years old, they are certain to have a great time and, if all the excitement gets the better of them, there’s always a comfy sofa, plenty of books and abundance of cuddles to wind down and relax. The Aegon GB Pro-Series $25,000 event is in its fourth year, with the previous three years proving a great breeding ground for players on their way up through the rankings n 2010 up-and-coming Laura Robson, who was 16 years old, reached the Quarter-Final where she was defeated by Timea Babos in a titanic 6-3 3-6 7-6(3) marathon match. The 2011 winner was 20 year old Johanna Konta who, although born in Australia, now plays for Great Britain. In the 2011 final Konta was leading Laura Robson 6-4 1-1 when the latter unfortunately had to retire due to injury. Laura’s passage to this year’s Wimbledon 4th round was widely reported, while 2012 saw Johanna's Wimbledon debut and is now the British number 3 behind Laura and Heather Watson. In 2012 top seed Sarah Gronert from Germany ranked 165 in the world and won the title in a highly entertaining final. While the 2013 tournament saw top seed Marta Sirotkina from Russia return to

Despite the British/Russian pair losing the first set 6-4, they went on to capture the title by winning the 2nd set 6-1, and then going on win the match tie-break 10-7. It's all change for tennis at Foxhills! Not only did 2013 see the courts refurbished in a bright and modern blue (to great member response) but the tennis Head Tennis team has been Pro Pippa revamped too. Steve Joyce joins Head Pro Pippa Britton's team. Speaking of her new colleague, Pippa says: "Steve brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the courts at Foxhills. He's a very welcome addition to the team and has had a brilliant first season." The tennis New Tennis team are also Pro Steve delighted to announce the return of a familiar face to Foxhills. New coach Andy Boyle worked here from 2008 to 2009 as Pippa's assistant and has returned to the Club to work with the adult teams, clinics and junior programme. Andy says: 'I'm extremely happy to be back at Foxhills and look forward to making lessons fun and interesting. I have a passion to help members achieve their desired goals, whether simply New Tennis for enjoyment or to Coach Andy compete."

Creating a consistently high quality golf experience across all areas of the Club requires a massive collective team effort, which is one of the reasons Foxhills is on the up, Steve Newell reports other Nature possesses some pretty mad skills, to use the modern vernacular, but she can only do so much. It required the vision and the skills of original architect, the illustrious Fred Hawtree and his design team, to mould this beautiful landscape of heather and pine forest into the two Foxhills courses we know and love. Nowadays, a new team is at the helm and they all share a common goal, to make Foxhills a golfing experience par excellence. When Director of Golf Alasdair Hay joined in 2011 he wasted no time in formulating a plan to resurrect ‘the spirit of the golf club’ and embark on a mission to improve the overall membership experience. Given the tough economic climate, and the challenge of consistently delivering more while costs remain under the spotlight, Alasdair is proud of what his team has been able to deliver and feels optimistic for what the future will bring.

“The feedback that I’ve received this summer from members and visitors indicates to me that the golf courses are the best they’ve been for something like 20 years,” says Alasdair, “and to hear those kind of comments is very gratifying. It’s a massive team effort, but I’d have to make special mention to the greenkeeping staff. They’ve been exceptionally good. They’ve worked hard, but they want to do even more and they’re champing at the bit – that kind of enthusiasm is infectious. They should be truly proud of what they’ve achieved.” The course work has been extensive, but Alasdair draws attention to the tree management programme instigated in 2012, which has successfully optimised light penetration and air movement in areas of close proximity to tees and greens. “The work on the walk-on, walk-off areas between the greens and tees has been very effective,” says Alasdair. “The teeing areas are a more long-term project and require a degree more work, but that’s something we’ll focus on over the winter months. There’s still much to do, as there is on any golf course around the country, but we’re on the right track.” Alasdair also singles out new General Manager Jason Adams in a positive light. “He absolutely understands the importance of golf
in the business and that’s encouraging from my perspective in terms of the improvements we want to try to deliver for our members.” 2013 – a year of success and sadness Among the many highlights of this year was Foxhills once again hosting the Southern PGA Championship, featuring several former European Tour players, all of whom were seriously impressed with the presentation of the golf course, many suggesting that it was a match for some of the venues they played on the European Tour. “I’d agree with that,” says Alasdair, himself a former European Tour Pro, “the course was stunning.” Sentiment was equally positive during the following day’s Pro-Am for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation. The weather wasn’t very kind that day, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits. Evidently the day was a lot of fun and in excess of £35,000 was raised for Seve’s charity. It was a great night at the Club too. Indeed, Alasdair has noticed what he sees as a definite uplift in the day-to-day buzz of the Club. “Member participation and camaraderie seems better than ever,” believes Alasdair. “The spirit of the Club seems strong again.”

“Golf retail is a challenging environment for sure,” says Head Professional Paul Creamer, “but we feel like we’re winning. We have a great team here and we really listen to our customers and try to understand exactly what they want. The customer has so many more options than, say, 20 years ago and you have to earn their support. You have to compete on price and deliver great customer service, which I believe we are doing on a consistent basis.” You also need good stock and that’s something that Paul feels is one of the strengths of the Foxhills Pro Shop. “We have the quality brands such as Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren, but where I think we’re winning is in offering bespoke, something a bit different, not just the standard clothing from their product range. It’s all about trying to separate the Pro Shop from our competitors and offer great quality and choice.” Paul and his team also pride themselves on sourcing the very latest equipment from the likes of TaylorMade and Callaway. “When a member buys from us, they can also use their account cards and get discounts on the retail price,” adds Paul. They will also benefit from expert advice, both from a technical and physical standpoint. That’s where the lines between retail and golf coaching converge rather neatly. It’s where the Pro Shop beats the internet hands down. Indeed, the enthusiasm and expertise of the coaching team at Foxhills is something else that Bernard Hunt would no doubt have applauded. Here too is a team working hard to deliver great service for its members, led by Greg Brodie, one of the most highly qualified coaches in the business. He is head coach of the Surrey Ladies County Team and recently completed a post-graduate degree in sports coaching, currently one of only 11 teaching pros in Europe to do so. “I think in the past we’ve maybe struggled a bit to convey to our members exactly what we can offer,” says Greg. “It’s important we do something about that, because the coaching set-up that we have here at Foxhills is very special. To be honest, we feel that the members are really missing out.” He’s got a point! Yes, Greg teaches top amateurs and professionals, but his expertise would help club golfers of all standards. The whole coaching team is there for the benefit of the Club’s members. “We feel a bit under-utilized sometimes,” says
Paul Casey and Anthony Wall both started their golf careers at Foxhills through the Club’s superb scholarship programme and the search is in full swing to find future tour stars. The programme, run by Foxhills professionals Greg Brodie and Richard Daly, is in essence an elite squad of young players that are nurtured, coached and encouraged in all aspects of their golf games. “The ultimate aim is a scratch or plus-handicap,” comments Richard. He goes on to add, “We take very much an holistic approach, which reflects the way golf coaching has changed in recent years. It means these youngsters benefit from coaching in all areas of the game, both physical and mental. It also extends to fitness and nutrition, which are obviously massively important in terms of maximising what natural talent a player possesses.” Judging from the golf being played by the Foundation's current crop of members, currently made up of 13 boys and one girl – with two more coming on board as we go to print – it is clear that this
all-encompassing approach is working. “We’re reluctant to single out individual players, because all of the kids have done amazingly well and we’re so pleased with them,” comments Richard, “but I’d have to shine a light on Amber Chana who has played her way into this year’s England development squad. Lorenzo Horwitz who won the Surrey Under-13s Championship and has reduced his handicap this year from 13 to five. Then there’s Lewis Hinton who was runner-up in the Surrey Under-14s and slashed his handicap from 10 to five. Also, Aatam Syed who plays off three and he’s only 13 years old. He’s a sensational player and won the US Kids Golf European Championship for his age group. Feedback from members has allowed the healthspa team to see that in the summer months the Spa Garden is hugely popular with those looking to benefit from the wellbeing facilities and treatments on offer, while also making the most of the fresh Surrey air and sunshine. However, as an outdoor space, the garden has been left somewhat deserted as the chillier weather draws in. This is something former Spa Manager and newly-appointed Spa & Leisure Director Charlene Phipp is eager to change. As part of a drive to draw a distinction between the healthspa’s seasonal offering: spring/summer and autumn/winter, Charlene and the healthspa team are working towards introducing the new Foxhills Winter Spa Garden – offering members a cosy and relaxing outdoor space. >

My vision for the area is members snuggled up under blankets sipping hot chocolate and reading a good book.” The Spa Garden Hut is set to contribute to the new seasonal calendar by dividing its menu between warming food and drink such as mulled wine, hot chocolate, soup and jacket potatoes in the colder months and its usual summer offering of refreshing drinks and antipasti. Plans for treatments also reflect the season, with the aim being to offer warming booster demonstrations in the garden to make full use of the wonderful space available for Foxhills members to enjoy. The Spa Garden’s future is a work in progress and Charlene says: “As ever, we welcome feedback and look forward to hearing members’ views on our plans for the Spa Garden. On the Run The Foxhills Running Club offers members and residents the chance to get out into the stunning surrounding countryside and improve their fitness with people of a similar ability. Led by fellow members Richard Talbot and Carole Pitkin, the Club meets every Sunday and is split up into two groups to run local loops of 3-4 miles or 6-7 miles, depending on confidence. With the focus being on off-road running wherever
possible, the Club allows members to get that all-important exercise and fresh air in the scenic Surrey surroundings with the added benefit of being able to share support and advice with Club members of similar fitness. • Inspired to boost your fitness? Free Wheeling The Cycling Club has been going for just under a year and is proving a hit with members. Meeting every Sunday morning, cyclists are split into two or three groups based on ability, and ride across routes of 25-35 miles through the beautiful Surrey countryside. Leisure Manager Dean Tooby leads the development group and says that the Club is perfect for those with less experience on wheels looking to hone their skills: “The Cycling Club is great fun and also offers

he year ahead is looking like one of truly superb fine dining and intriguing new developments at The Manor. The team were overjoyed to have been awarded that much sought-after AA Rosette in February 2013, an award which Executive Chef David Hanlon and Food & Beverage Manager Christy Childs were eager to see return to the Club after 12 years of absence. David says: "A Rosette is a massive deal, we were all so happy and very emotional when we found out we had received it – there were champagne corks popping in the kitchen that day." Never ones to rest on their laurels though, The Manor kitchen and front of house team were straight back to work, exploring ways they could chase that highly desirable second Rosette for the restaurant. The first few months of 2014 will see the kitchen undergoing major redevelopment, reopening in early March with new interactive features. As part of their shared appetite to look to the future of food, David and Christy have also been taking on apprentices. Jake and Dan joined David in the kitchen and Lucy has been working front of house. All three, as David and Christy say, have been doing very well and have shown a huge amount of enthusiasm. David adds: "We see these opportunities as a really important way to give back to the industry. I was given a chance as a trainee and I really want to do the same for the restaurant staff of the future." The new year will also see the expansion of the range on offer by the Foxhills Smokehouse. The Club's own smoked salmon is enjoyed by members and residents, both in the restaurant and beautifully wrapped as a perfect gift. David is now keen to develop the Foxhills smoked and cured offering further to include hams, cheeses and a variety of fish and also offer members and residents master classes on how best to use smoked produce in their own cooking. Look out too for the new Mozzo Coffee range which has been rolled out across the resort having recently proven a hit with members at the Halfway Houses. Mozzo Coffee are also offering Club staff special training and the opportunity to become fully trained baristas. Keeping it fresh is what food at Foxhills is all about, and it looks like 2014 is going to be a delicious year. Look out at the Club for the latest news on the kitchen refurbishment.
