Move over, shelf elves! This easy-carve tomte is bound to become the prankster of the household. He has minimal features—making him wonderful project for beginner carvers—but still includes plenty of fun movement, thanks to a tall, curvy hat, round nose, and thick, wavy beard. Have fun with the design and make it your own, and then have fun moving him around the house for bit of mischievous merriment! Getting Started Transfer the pattern onto the blank using graphite paper and pencil, and then cut it out with band saw. Before you begin carving, make sure your tools are sharp. Plus, when you’re carving an avocado pit, there’s a lot of room for creativity and individual expression. Copy the pattern exactly, or add your own variations to the shape of the eyes, head, body, and wings. Gift this one-of-a-kind pendant to special someone—or keep it for yourself! Getting Started Prepare the blank. Remove the pit from the avocado. Let it rest for few days (see Tip at right). Peel off the thin layer of brown skin, and then find the seam that divides the pit in half. Separate the halves by inserting your blade between them and carefully twisting the knife. Once there is a gap, you can “open” the pit with your fingers. MATERIALS Avocado pit Sandpaper: 220-grit Finish, such as Danish oil Cotton cord, brown: 1/32” (1mm)-dia. Napkins or paper towels TOOLS Carving knife, such as X-Acto® The steel of your blade might react with the juice of the pit and leave dark strokes on the pit. This is fine. Also, it’s likely that you will see pit change to a darker color as it begins to oxidize. Do not be concerned—this is also a normal part of the process. !

1 88 3 HUMIDITY-LOVING PLANTS How to Propagate Cissus discolor What love about Cissus discolor is that it wants to grow and vine, so in no time you will have new vines sprouting, which mean more lush leaves. As one of the easiest to propagate, you can make these vines into new plants, which is always so rewarding. Propagate this plant from either stem cuttings in water or leaf cuttings in sphagnum moss. WATER PROPAGATION Place the stem cutting in a glass of rainwater, making sure that the node is submerged, and keep in a warm place that gets a lot of bright indirect light. Change the water once week. In approximately 3–5 weeks the roots should be long enough to transfer into your soil mixture. Cut a vine which has four leaves on it. Cut off the lowest leaf to expose the node (the point where leaves emerge from the stem). 2 – HUMIDITY-LOVING PLANTS 89 MOSS PROPAGATION Once they are all in the sphagnum moss, mist slightly to create a humid environment. Push down the cutting into the sphagnum moss; repeat this with all of your leaf cuttings, ensuring the stem is snug. Dip your leaf stem cutting in rooting hormone powder (see page 21). Cut the vine in between each leaf to create a leaf stem cutting. Take a long vine cutting with approximately 8–10 leaves. Prepare a large shallow container with damp sphagnum moss. After roots are established, it’s time to move your leaf cuttings into your potting mixture. Lightly moisten the soil and place the pot in bright indirect light. Place your container in a warm area with bright indirect light. You will not need to water your cuttings again throughout this period as sphagnum moss retains water. Within 5 weeks you will have roots growing from your cuttings and maybe a new vine forming. Place lid or cling lm over the propagation tray (if using cling film pierce a few holes for ventilation). This will keep the air inside the container nice and humid so the cuttings can root. 34 REALLY EASY INDOOR PLANTS 35 Another favourite, the yucca is definitely the go-to plant for new plant parents. It’s very easy to find and has become a popular house plant. Growing yucca in pots indoors is a fabulous way to bring the outdoors inside in a large way, adding a focal point to the room. Native to the Caribbean, the high deserts of south-western United States and Mexico, yucca plants are striking and low maintenance. They are slow so will not outgrow their pot quickly and will not need repotting for many years. Also, an added bonus is that they are drought tolerant, so if you forget to water or go away for a short break they will be ne. They are relatively inexpensive and often come in a large pot, perfect for displaying as a oor plant. YUCCA POSITION Your yucca will thrive in full sunlight. Placing it in the brightest location indoors is the best position. Near a south-, east- or west-facing window would be perfect. WATERING Yucca plants are prone to overwatering. Be mindful when watering as they do not like to sit in water. Always use a pot with good drainage holes. Water regularly in the summer months, allowing the soil to dry out between watering. Water once every few weeks in the winter months. It’s better to underwater rather than overwater. SOIL MIX Native to hot climates, yuccas grow in sandy soil, so the main requirement is a welldraining mix. When repotting, use a regular potting compost and mix with coarse sand and perlite to help with drainage. Yucca plants do not require a highly fertile soil. FEEDING Feed once a month during the growing season. Use a liquid fertilizer and dilute to half the strength recommended on the product label. An overfed yucca can result in leaf burn; using half-strength fertilizer helps prevent salt and mineral build-up in the soil. HUMIDITY Yuccas are adaptable to the ever-changing indoor environment. However, misting during the winter months when the central heating is likely to be on (causing dry air) will help prevent browning leaf edges. PESTS Common pests are aphids, mealybugs and scale. To get rid of them, simply shower the whole plant with a strong stream of water (perhaps easier outside or in the bath); once dry, spray it with an organic neem oil solution. Pay attention to the undersides of the leaves too! QUICK CARE TIPS • Lower leaves will always droop and die back rst. Trim any yellow, crispy dead leaves back to near the trunk. • Do not overwater or allow the yucca to sit in water. • Place in the brightest lit area in the home. • Use a sturdy ceramic or terracotta pot. The canes do get heavy so this will give it a solid base to ensure it doesn’t topple over. • Mildly toxic to cats and dogs.

14 Growing Your Own Tea Garden herbs on drying screen (an old, clean window screen is a good DIY option). Simply place a muslin cloth over the screen, line the screen with a single layer of herbs, and leave the herbs to dry. Depending on the moisture content, herbs can take several hours or several days to dry. Herbs are dried when they crumble easily. Oven-drying: Choose the lowest heat setting possible—less than 180°F (82°C) is ideal because if the temperature is too high, the herbs will bake, not dry. Place a single layer of herbs on a cookie sheet and place it in the oven. Leave the oven door open a crack to allow air to circulate. Check the herbs every fifteen minutes. Low-moisture herbs, such as oregano, marjoram, and rosemary, will require less time than other herbs that have higher moisture content. Expect oven-drying herbs to take at least forty-five minutes; some will take much longer. Let herbs cool before handling them. Dehydrating: Food dehydrators are excellent for drying herbs. While it’s best to follow the instructions in the operating manual, as general rule of thumb, preheat the dehydrator to 115°F (46°C) (higher if you live in a humid climate). Place herbs on trays in single layer, making note of which herbs are on which trays; it can be hard to tell dried herbs apart. Set the timer. Expect it to take at least one hour—but potentially much longer—for the herbs to fully dry. Check them every fifteen minutes to monitor their progress. After you remove the herbs from the dehydrator, allow them to cool before handling. Three Tips for a Great Cup of Tea Harvest early: To seal in the flavor, cut herbs first thing in the morning Use a sharp pair of shears to clip the leaves after the dew has dried but before the sun gets too hot; the heat draws out the natural oils that give herbs their flavor Instead of letting herbs grow wild, harvest them often Snipping a few sprigs or a handful of leaves serves as an informal pruning Harvesting herbs before they start to flower keeps the energy in the leaves, which helps preserve their fresh flavors Dry herbs naturally: You can keep sipping the flavors of your labor all winter long by drying fresh herbs harvested in the summer Lay the leaves on a towel in the hot sun until they turn crispy The leaves must be dry enough to crumble; if there is any moisture left in them, they will get moldy Once the leaves are dried, store them in glass jars in a cool, dry place Have fun: Growing the ingredients for tea is all about experimentation Start with a few favorites; sample new plants; mix and match like mad scientist and see what happens Not all DIY blends will be a hit, but some flavor combinations might lead to surprisingly tasty teas Air-drying is a classic and almost foolproof method of preserving your harvest Morning is the best time to harvest herbs Make your oven into an herb dryer Air-drying herbs is a natural way to preserve Using food dehydrator can be an efficient way to dry herbs Don’t be afraid to mix different teas and herbs together You might hit upon a real winner! Preserving the Harvest 15 18 Growing Your Own Tea Garden Recipes 19 CALENDULA SUN TEA This old-fashioned process for “brewing” tea harkens back to simpler time. Add little honey to balance out the sometimes spicy flavor of the calendula flowers. Makes 3 to 4 servings. PEPPERMINT RASPBERRY TEA The sweetness of the raspberries balances the cool “bite” of the peppermint in this refreshing tea. Over ice, peppermint raspberry tea is great thirst quencher, but the minty tea with a hint of sweetness can also be enjoyed hot. Makes to 4 servings. cup (240ml) fresh calendula flowers cups (960ml) cold water Honey to taste handful fresh peppermint leaves handful fresh raspberries 4 cups (960ml) water Fill a 2-quart (1.9-liter) jar with the fresh flowers and cold water; seal with an airtight lid. Choose a sunny day and leave the jar on a windowsill for at least eight hours. Strain the flowers and pour the liquid over ice. Bring a kettle of water to a boil. Pour boiling water over the peppermint leaves and raspberries. Leave the brew to steep overnight. To drink, strain the leaves and berries and reheat, or pour the tea over cup of ice.

LIVING SUCCULENT WREATH Beginner- Intermediate Wreaths are the perfect statement piece to decorate and liven up your front door or wall for any season. Although wreaths can look complicated, they are actually quite simple to create. Making your own wreath gives you the flexibility to use the color palate you want and let your inner creativity shine through. Wreaths can be customized for different holidays by choosing succulents and embellishments that compliment the season. For example, decorate your wreath with a large gold or red ribbon for the holidays or with leaves and berries for the fall. Use red and pink varieties of plants or heart-shaped wreath base for Valentine’s day and pastel colors for spring. Wreaths can also be used as a unique and interesting table decoration when laid flat and placed around candles or other centerpiece décor. These also make an excellent gift that will delight for months to come. SUCCULENTS USED Eleven 2 inch succulents Sixteen cuttings of smaller “filler” succulents with ½ inch stems Note: For this project we used both cuttings and rooted succulents. The wreath shown showcases several varieties of colorful Echeveria Graptopetalum, large Kiwi Aeonium and a cluster of Sempervivum ‘hens and chicks’ in 2-4 inch sizes. Filler succulents to accent the larger plants included Crassula ovata (‘baby jade’), Crassula rupestris, Sedum confusum and Sedum reflexum. MATERIALS NEEDED Large bag of Sphagnum moss (a lb. bag would be more then enough!) Large bowl or bucket of water 13-inch wire wreath frame Natural twine- available to purchase in 120 ft. spools Floral pins (often called “greening pins”) pack of 50 Chopstick, screwdriver or pencil to create holes Rooting powder (optional) Hot glue gun or tacky glue (optional) Decorative holiday ribbon, wreath hanger (optional) Note: To make this project easier you can also purchase pre-formed sphagnum wreath form, instead of crafting your own. Simply soak the moss form in water for 10 minutes before beginning and skip to step 8. Living Succulent wreath 1. Gather your succulents and cuttings as outlined in the materials used. You’ll want a few larger plants, around 4 inches in diameter, to act as visual focal points. As noted in the introduction, let your cuttings harden for day or so before using. Remove soil from rooted plants by gently massaging away the dirt. 4. Squeeze out excess water from the moss and place it around your wreath base. Use both of your hands to firmly squeeze the moss onto the wreath, around its shape. Fill large bowl with water and soak several handfuls of sphagnum moss for about 10 minutes. The moss will expand to 5 times its size when soaked in water. You can always add more moss to the water if you need it. 5. Once you’ve molded your wreath use twine to secure the moss by wrapping it around the entire wreath leaving about fingers’ worth of space between each interval. Use your scissors to cut about 120 inches of twine. Start by tying the twine firmly off on one end and then proceeding to wrap it around your wreath base. Keep in mind that moss is messy and will fall off as you do this. If you lose too much moss in the process of securing it, simply add more and keep going. Lay your wreath base flat with the curved side facing up.

CHAPTER 8 COMMERCIAL CONSIDERATIONS This next section of the book deals with various aspects of the commercial rabbitry. By this we mean everything from the small rabbit farmer raising just enough surplus animals to sell as breeders, or as meat to support their own food-raising costs, to the 1,000-kit-amonth full-scale rabbit agricultural operation. While the previous sections of this book are applicable to both the hobby and commercial rabbit raiser, these final chapters will deal more with how to run a profitable agricultural enterprise. We will discuss venues for the marketing of meat rabbits, the laws and regulations that you may encounter in the United States while engaging in rabbit commerce, and how to determine your prices. For our international readers, while we cannot include all the government regulations you might face, the process for going about moving to a commercial operation is the same everywhere. There are three questions that you must answer for your own particular area before you consider any commercial operation: Calculating the distance and availability of possible markets 2. Ascertaining the laws governing live rabbit sales, meat sales, and meat processing in your state. Determining the availability of rabbit meat processors or packers who meet your state’s regulations if on-farm processing is not allowed in your locale. (If on-farm processing is allowed, you must work out how it is regulated and inspected.) 132  A Practical Guide to Rabbit Ranching “Going Commercial” and Regulations  133 We will deal with how to go about wading through these three initial questions in this chapter to determine if “going commercial” is viable option for you, and then in the following chapters we will introduce specific marketing techniques for the various outlets for your kits and the cost analysis needed to set your rabbit prices to realize a profit. MARKET OUTLETS LIVE RABBITS By far, one of the easiest ways to sell your rabbits is through contract with live meat rabbit buyer. Your State Department of Agriculture may be able to tell you if there are any meat packers that operate in your area who might buy your rabbits live. Some of these meat processors may even be willing to send “rabbit runner” to a set point where several farmers bring their animals—so don’t count out rabbit processors that are distant until you contact them. The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) and other rabbit groups may also have a list of processors—some of which may buy live meat rabbits directly. (While you are researching this, find out if the processor requires any particular husbandry protocols while you raise them.) These are not the only live rabbit buyers out there, however. Sometimes other farmers with established markets cannot raise enough rabbits to meet their market demands and may be willing to buy your live rabbits to process along with their own. Check if other farms in your state are selling rabbit, and contact them to see if they need an additional rabbit grower to provide for their customers. Another option is selling at livestock sale barns. Many of these livestock markets will sell live rabbits for you at auction—just like they do with cattle, sheep, or goats (usually on days that they do other small animals, such as chickens). You can also sell live rabbits from a booth at some flea market or farmer’s market venues. It should be noted, however, that fewer and fewer Americans are willing to slaughter animals for food, but at the same time many immigrant populations are very happy to find an available source of meat animals and disdain frozen prepackaged meat. You need to look at the demographics of these local markets before you count on them as an outlet. Selling quality breeding stock to other rabbit raisers is also an outlet for live rabbits. Not every animal should be used for breeding, and you will still need an outlet for the rest of your crop. 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) programs are another potential source of live rabbit buyers. Because of the lower cost of purchase and housing and the fact that there are few restrictions for rabbits in most communities, rabbits can be a very rewarding tool for teaching youth about sound and sustainable farm practices. If you like kids and are willing to volunteer some of your time teaching, you may develop a profitable and very rewarding relationship with your local school chapters. This may be but a portion of your rabbit market outlet, but it can be used as an educational tool to increase the overall demand for rabbit meat in your area. MARKET OUTLETS RABBIT MEAT Though specific marketing ideas will be presented in the following chapter, you must evaluate the potential for rabbit meat sales before you buy your first rabbit especially if you are thinking about a larger-scale operation. Rabbit meat can be marketed directly to the public through farmer markets. This will of course require you to be available for most weekends throughout the normal growing season at least. Some markets in larger cities are even open every day. You need to visit your local markets and inquire about booth space costs and availability, electricity for freezers, and market regulations. Then you need to observe the traffic flow. Find out if there is an immigrant population that might be looking for rabbit. Discover if there is trend toward antibioticfree, naturally raised, meats in the upscale buyers. Determine if there are other sellers that might be competition or already attracting people at the market. Talk to these vendors if possible and find out what kind of sales volume they might have in day. Rabbit meat can also be marketed through restaurants. The “chain store” type establishments that have the same menu throughout the country are not usually an option. Look for a farm-to-table operation or an upscale, high-end business that offers exotic cuisine. Buffet-style venues may be interested in doing “Rabbit Tuesday” or some such marketing ploy to bring in The biggest bottleneck in the growth of the U.S. meat rabbit industry is a lack of federally inspected processing facilities. If you are not lucky enough to have a meat processor who will buy your rabbits on contract, you can sell them at many livestock auction barns. Breeding stock sales can be a lucrative part of your business. Rabbit meat can be sold direct to the public on a farm or at farmer’s markets, through restaurants and food stores, or even through the Internet.

Clicker Training for Rabbits, Hamsters, and Other Small Pets The Clicker Lifestyle 20 21 they are not good climbers. They are also quite clumsy when jumping and can injure themselves easily, which is why you should avoid climbing exercises and only attempt low jumps with guinea pig. Rats are sharp rodents. They learn quickly and love learning, so they are ideal pets for clicker training. The various hurdles must be adapted to the size and condition of the respective animal. Clickers for All Animals Generally, all animals can be trained using a clicker. The basic principle of conditioning to the clicker is always the same. Clickers have been used successfully for long time to train animals actors for movies and TV—not just dogs, cats, and horses but cows, donkeys, chickens, ravens, owls, and many other animals. Equally, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, and other small mammals can also have fun with clickers. However, because of their size— that is, their small size—and the risk of running away, training is little more difficult with hamsters and mice than it is with larger rodents and rabbits. Despite a trainer’s best efforts, there are some animals who just do not like clicker training. One of my rabbits, for example, never understood why wanted him to jump over hurdle when there were so many other exciting things to explore in the room. The following are important points that you should consider during clicker training depending on the type of pet you have. Rabbits Rabbits are very sensitive to stress and can be frightened easily. Due to their anatomy (especially their strong hind legs), rabbits are great jumpers and are therefore particularly good at clearing hurdles and doing similar types of exercises. Rabbits are not good climbers. Do not include exercises such as climbing ladder, a rope, or another object in your rabbit’s training plan. Guinea Pigs Guinea pigs are very well suited to clicker training due to their calm nature. They are good tempered and tolerant, but it is very important that you watch for the smallest signs of stress, so as not to overwhelm your guinea pig during clicker training. Guinea pigs have rather chubby bodies with short legs. Contrary to what you might think at first glance, they can run very quickly! However, Proceed with Care flight animals and scare very easily. Unknown sounds, like clicking, as well as hectic movements, can initially scare them. Therefore, avoid anything that could scare your pet and use a clicker with volume control if necessary. If your small pet continues to be scared of the clicker, please do not be upset, but accept that clicker training is not the best course of action for your pet. Clicker training is a team activity, and one of the partners doesn’t feel comfortable with it, you should look for another way to spend time with your furry friend. Luckily, it’s rare to find an animal who is unwilling to train, and usually nothing stands in the way of playful instruction with a pet. AHA Rabbits Are Not Rodents Contrary to popular belief, rabbits do not belong to the rodent family. Their behavior and postures are quite similar to those of rodents, but they are part of the hare family (Leporidae). AHA Clicker Training for Rabbits, Hamsters, and Other Small Pets Using the Target Stick 44 45 Stage 2: Reaching for the Target Stick 1Hold the target stick farther away but still close enough that your pet You did it! The first steps of targetstick training are success. Following the target stick up an incline is a popular expansion on targeting. The Right Perspective Eyes on either side of their heads allow rodents and rabbits to see well in all directions, but they can’t see very far into the distance. In addition, rabbits do not see in full color and can only distinguish red and green. If your animal doesn’t follow the target stick, he may just not have seen it properly. Tap the ground lightly with the target stick to get your pet’s attention. This trick worked well with my guinea pig Oliver. Tip A Firm Foundation Before you start target-stick training, also called targeting your animal should be 100% conditioned to the sound of the clicker. Otherwise, it will be difficult for him to understand what you want from him. AHA 3Reward your pet with a jackpot the first time he walks to touch the target stick. 4Gradually increase the distance between the target stick and the animal. At first, he needs to take only step or two to touch the stick and get the reward, but later he must cover more distance. Some small animals initially have problems following the target stick around. To make the exercise easier for your pet, start by guiding him in only one direction, e.g., along the length of the wall. If your pet runs this route confidently, you can add one curve, then several curves, and then progress to guiding him around the entire training area. Introduction to Obstacle Courses Once your animal has learned to follow the target stick well, start guiding him over various obstacles, like bridges and seesaws. You can use the different obstacles to build a small playground for your pet. Remember to always match the training course to your animal’s natural physical abilities so that your pet does not get hurt. In chapter 5, some of the obstaclecourse exercises, including the seesaw and the tunnel, are explained in more detail. The procedure for setting up these obstacles can be applied to everything you want to include in your small pet’s playground. can touch it without walking toward the target stick. 2If your little training partner stretches for the target stick and nudges the ball, click and reward. 3Repeat this exercise until it is consistent. Then move on to stage 3. Stage 3: Walking toward the Target Stick 1Hold the target stick in front of your small pet so that he must stretch to touch the ball. Click and reward your animal when he touches the target stick. 2Next, hold the target stick the same way as in step 1 but far enough away that your pet must take a step forward to be able to touch it. If your training partner hesitates at first, give him some encouragement in a soft voice.

Finding That Perfect PuppyThe New Complete Dog Book26 27 That breeder cares for his or her litter and the breed in general is a good indicator of their devotion to dogs. Poodle dam with her brood (left); quintet of related Kuvaszok. to rescue. It is not unusual to find some of the top show breeders devoting hours to helping a member of their canine clan who may have fallen on hard times. Some will drive all night to rescue dog who somehow wound up in a shelter. They love dogs, and they love their breed, sometimes to a point that might seem odd to a newcomer to this world. So, how can you know whether or not someone offering you puppy is a responsible breeder? The following is checklist of green lights, qualities that suggest you are in the hands of someone worthy of that description. We also present red flags that will suggest you should look elsewhere for your new family member. Green Light: The breeder is affiliated with the AKC, may be an AKC Breeder of Merit program participant, and may be connected to the AKC parent club for the breed. A parent club is an AKC-affiliated national organization of fanciers and enthusiasts who work together for the improvement of a breed. Sometimes, there will be two or more national clubs devoted to specific breed, but only one will be designated the AKC parent club. This club will clearly identify itself as the AKC parent club on its website. AKC parent clubs maintain code of ethics, set of principles and practices that ensure the breeder has considered the best pedigree and genetic information before producing a litter, and that the dogs are raised in healthy environment. Parent clubs will offer a list of member breeders on their websites. Many of the best breeders will be involved in other clubs as well, for obedience, agility, and performance. Red Flag: A breeder, unaffiliated with any club or organization, who offers no background on the puppy’s parents or grandparents. Responsible breeders will know, in detail, about several generations of great dogs who went into creating this latest litter. And they will be happy to discuss it all, sometimes in more detail than you can absorb. Green Light: The breeder eagerly opens his or her home to you. By visiting, you’ll get an idea of how the puppy is being raised, and what the mother is like in both looks and temperament. Meeting the other dogs in the home, which may or may not include the dad, will give you a sense of the breeder’s line, that unique set of physical and mental characteristics nurtured WHAT IS A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER? Dog breeding is both science and art. A breeder must know all about canine genetics and anatomy nutrition, and psychology, both canine and human. He or she must know how to read pedigree in order to choose sires and dams who will produce beautiful puppies, healthy and sound in both body and mind. The breeder must know the history of the breed, what role these dogs have played through the years, and how that role may be changing in the modern world. He or she must have what is known as “an eye for dog,” an ability to see which dogs in a litter have the physical attributes to be great example of a breed. The breeder must have solid background in training and dog behavior, the knowhow to size up litter and say which puppy has the mental and emotional makeup to someday become natural show dog, an agility champ, or a great pet. It’s impossible to pick this up overnight. Decades of dedication and experience, learning what works and doesn’t, go into dog breeding. Some of the breeders you meet may have whelped their first litters before you were born. And, if you are going to a new breeder, that person will likely have mentor, more experienced breeder who has shared knowledge with the newcomer. The best breeders will be intensely involved in the dog world. You will see them at shows and dog-sport events. They are passionate about their breed and its welfare, from the Best in Show ring Contact the Parent Club All AKC-affiliated national breed clubs, known as parent clubs, maintain lists of member-breeders, people who are active in the club, intensely involved with the breed, and adhere to a strict ethics code, established by the clubs. You can find these breeders by going to the AKC website (akc.org), finding your breed of interest, and then clicking on the link to the national parent club. If you are new to breed, read through all the information on the site. Another place to look for a breeder is the AKC website. (akc.org) The Bull Terrier is known for its egg-shaped head, which this dam has clearly passed along to her offspring. A good breeder will proudly welcome you into his or her home to meet the litter. Here’s sleepy gang of Australian Cattle Dog pups. Finding That Perfect Puppy 31 Kennel Club. Look carefully at the application because some alternative registries choose names that are very similar to the AKC, but they are not the real thing. Green Light: There is lifelong return policy. Good breeders care about their dogs for as long as they live and will want them back if you can no longer care for them. There are many stories about breeders opening their homes to elderly dogs, which they sold years ago as puppies, because the owners have fallen on hard times, become ill, or died. Red Flag: The breeder makes it clear that all sales are final. Green Light: The breeder allows you to see the puppies playing together loose and with the other dogs in the house so you can get a sense of how they all get along. Red Flag: You are only permitted to see one or two puppies at a time, which may be clue that the dogs have temperament issues. Green Light: The puppies and all dogs in the house look healthy, clean, and well fed. The breeder should offer you proof of vaccinations, wormings, and reports from any veterinary visits and exams. Red Flag: Puppies who are lethargic or seem unhealthy in any way, and breeder who cannot answer questions about vaccinations or general health issues such as heartworm, puppy coughs, Green Light: The breeder asks you a lot of questions about what kinds of activities you hope to do with your dog. Using his or her years of experience, the breeder will choose puppy who has the greatest potential to excel in those Red Flag: A breeder who says that a puppy will definitely become show dog. Although a pup may have show potential, there is no way to say for sure whether those qualities will still be there in the adult dog. Green Light: You like the breeder. This is intangible and, sometimes, great dog people have prickly personalities, but you need to feel as if you trust this person and have rapport. When you a buy puppy, you are also forging link to the breeder. This person will become mentor, guiding you through those difficult puppy days and early training. In the best cases, you’ll want to share your dog’s life journey with the person responsible for bringing him into the world. There will be great times ahead—graduation from puppy class, passing CGC, that first agility trial, or a blue ribbon. A good breeder will delight in all of these accomplishments with you, cheering like a proud grandparent at every victory and laughing with glee at every funny picture. That is one of the incredible bonuses of buying puppy from an AKC breeder. You become part of a huge network, a family, of people who, like you, love dogs more than anything on earth. A good breeder has an obvious rapport with his or her pups. This litter of Irish Water Spaniel puppies is happily playing “follow the breeder.” Healthy puppies should be alert and playful. The breeder should allow you to watch the puppies interacting with their littermates, as are this duo of Pulik and trio of Australian Shepherds. The experience of choosing a puppy from the right breeder should be rewarding and enjoyable.
