MATRIX RODS HAVE RECEIVED EXCELLENT REVIEWS BY ALL WHO HAVE USED THEM. THE RANGE COVERS A WIDE VARIETY OF MATCH AND GENERAL FISHING STYLES AND HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR BOTH UK AND EUROPEAN ANGLERS. There are currently six ranges in the Matrix rod range. The established Carpmaster range has been designed for the latest match carp fishing methods and covers everything from short range feeder work to long range Method feeder fishing, and also ‘commercial water’ float methods. The Horizon range is designed for long range feeder fishing, primarily on large European waters where distance casting is essential, and is now regarded as one of the best ranges available for extreme performance. The Ultron range covers a broad spectrum of float and feeder methods and offers excellent value for money, whilst the Reflex float rods have superbly refined actions more suitable for traditional stick float and waggler fishing. New for 2013 is the exceptional value Carbo-Flex feeder range which offers versatile performance across a wide rage of feeder methods and the Reflex Bolo rods designed for Bolognese fishing across Europe. Finally there are two pole ranges. The Finesse is a flagship match anglers pole designed for International competition fishing where length limits of 13 metres are imposed. The Power X range offers outstanding power and value making it suitable for carp fishing in the UK and on ‘Carpadromes’ in Europe. See pages 52 - 55 for Rods

SEATBOXES & BOX ACCESSORY INTRODUCTION Matrix Snag-Free box accessories are designed to fit on 25mm round legs found on most seat boxes including the Matrix Superbox 1 and Matrix SB range. All feature a unique non-marking ‘Snag Free’ knuckle that reduces the chance of line getting wrapped around the hand wheel or the knuckle.

THE MATRIX SEATBOX RANGE NOW FEATURES TWO SEATBOX DESIGNS, THE ESTABLISHED SUPERBOX 1 AND THE NEW SB RANGE. BOTH USE THE SAME TOP UNITS, 25MM LEGS AND ARE BUILT TO OUR EXCLUSIVE DESIGN.

T

he Matrix Seatbox range consists of two styles, the established premium Superbox 1 and the new SB range. Both of these are designed exclusively by Matrix and are not available from any other company. The drawer units on both boxes are common and regarded by many as the best available. The aluminium legs are 25mm in diameter to conform to the most popular size used across Europe, and provide excellent stability. With its understated black ‘stealth-like’ finish, Snag-Free fittings and brilliant drawer units, the Matrix Superbox 1 has been a huge success since its launch. The premium quality Superbox 1 not only looks visually stunning, it performs superbly too and has received high acclaim from angling journalists and satisfied customers. The new Matrix SB Seatbox range has been designed to complement the established Superbox 1. Offering outstanding value for money, combined with a high quality ‘modular’ system, which uses the Matrix Superbox 1 Drawer and Tray Units, their are four options within the range offering excellent value. These options can then be added to, creating the perfect seatbox solution depending on personal preference. The ‘H’ Frame, Footplate and 25mm legs are made from lightweight aluminium and are sold separately for anglers wanting to build their own seatbox system. To complement the Seatboxes is a high quality range of Snag Free accessories which are designed to fit 25mm diameter legs. These have the exclusive Matrix Snag Free fitting which reduces the chance of line getting caught on the tightening wheels.

POLE ELASTIC SET-UPS

Pole Elastics Which Is best?

SOLID OR HOLLOW - WHICH IS BEST? IT’S A QUESTION THAT ALWAYS GETS ANGLERS TALKING SO PERHAPS TWO OF BRITAIN’S TOP ANGLERS CAN SHED SOME LIGHT ON WHICH IS BEST!

W

arren Martin and Les Thompson are top match anglers who just happened to win Britain’s most prestigious and richest matches last year - the £25,000 Fish ‘O’ Mania and the £50,000 Match This final. Both won catching carp on the pole so they are more than qualified to give their opinion on pole elastic set-ups. So which is best?

ELASTIC SET-UPS - WHO USES WHAT Warren’s Elastics

Les’s Elastics

MATRIX SOLID ELASTIC

MATRIX HOLLOW ELASTIC

Small Carp and F1’s Size 8 (1.27mm)

Silver Fish (on carp lakes) Size 8 (Yellow)

Normal Match Carp Size 10 or 12 (1.44/1.60mm) Bagging and Margin fishing Size 16 (2.00mm)

Conclusion

This is where the confusion starts. Warren prefers solid elastics and Les always uses hollow elastics. To complicate things even further Warren uses a normal Winder Bung with his top kits fully elasticated, whilst Les uses a Pull Bung so he can adjust the elastic tension whilst playing the fish.

Warren’s Way

For Warren his elastic set-ups are all about control. They are simple and he knows what they are going to do, how they are going to react and what pressure he can apply. For him solid elastics give him more control than hollow elastics.

Les’s Way

For Les hollow elastic gives him the initial softness he likes, especially when fishing up in the water on a short line. The addition of a Pull Bung enables him to tighten the elastic once he has unshipped which means he can land fish quickly, even on a soft elastic set-up.

Small Carp and F1’s Size 10 (Orange) Normal Match Carp Size 12 (Red)

Confusion

Above: Les Thompson on his way to the £50,000 Match This title. Les caught mostly F1’s with the odd better carp mixed in and used an Orange elastic throughout. Left: Warren with his winners catch to win the £25,000 Fish ‘O’ Mania final. As you can see his catch was a mixture of carp and barbel with some larger bonus carp. He used a size 12 solid elastic.

Based on Warren’s and Les’s set-ups there is no ‘best’ way to elasticate your poles for carp fishing, it is very much a case of personal choice. Warren prefers solid elastic because he feels it gives him more control and he doesn’t use a Pull Bung, so it’s probably fair to say he’s a bit ‘old school’ in his approach. That doesn’t mean he’s not right up with the best modern match anglers as his results and success in the Fish ‘O’ Mania final prove. On the other hand Les is an F1 specialist, as those who know him will testify. His gear is refined to perfection and the stretch of hollow elastic is perfect when catching F1’s and also when fishing up in the water. The use of a Pull Bung compensates for his soft elastic approach and helps him land fish quickly once in netting range. So, if you use solid elastics and are happy, then why change? On the other hand if hollow is your choice, that’s fine too. At least you know even the best can’t agree! See page 61 for Pole Elastics

HELPING CATCH MORE FISH! Congratulations to Matrix anglers Warren Martin and Les Thompson on winning two of the most prestigious match fishing titles in the UK. Warren powered his way to first spot in the dramatic televised final of Fish ‘O’ Mania and just weeks later Les destroyed a high quality line up in the £50k Match This final at Larford.
