EDITORIAL 2010 saw gospel music in Ireland rise to yet another level. More music and events released, and new artists stepping onto the gospel scene. More so, there was a greater level of excellence and structure in how did went about things. We applaud the gospel choirs, bands and artists that have stepped up yet higher to present a thriving and active gospel sector.

In circumstances that we know are challenging, we see artists believe in their music enough to forge ahead, beat the odds and bring gospel music more into to the mainstream in Ireland.

Most of these artists are balancing the challenges of pursuing their music while working the ‘day job’ to make ends meet and invest in their music. Any support, whether through encouragement, helping out, going to gigs or financial assistance, makes a real difference to them.

2010 was a good year for gospel. From Gospo Remix’s energetic live concert; Tunde, Anton, Discovery’s new music all round to the major global gospel artists who ‘dropped by’ Ireland. These included Andrae Crouch, Israel Houghton, Fred Hammond and Adam Crabb of the southern gospel favourites the Crabb family.

This edition of Gospel Republic 2010 Review highlights some, not all, of those high moments on the gospel music scene in Ireland. We aim to acknowledge and celebrate them, and to inspire you.

2011 is setting off on a high note with the launch of the début compilation album of GOSPEL VOICES. And there is more coming throughout the year. So stay with us and enjoy this exciting journey!

The inaugural Gospel Rising Music Festival was held in Ennis, Co Clare in May 2010. The festival was a huge success with choirs travelling from all over Ireland to attend, to the delight of the festival organisers!

The weekend started with a bang on the Friday night.

Workshop participants were encouraged to get straight into the fun, forget all their inhibitions and embrace the energy of the weekend. And the energy just kept on going from there. Saturday workshops covered choral singing, working on soloist technique, participants danced it out in the choreography class and the band got a chance to jam.

This was all topped off on Saturday night with the festival gig where members of the London Community Gospel Choir, who were attending the festival to give workshops, hit the stage to show what they could do. Their performance was matched note for note by six of the Irish choirs attending the festival who sang their hearts out on stage, showing just how strong the Irish gospel music scene has become over the last ten years.

Sunday started with several of the choirs rising bright and early to sing at Sunday services across the town of Ennis, bringing the spirit of the festival to the community. The festival closed out with a workshop from Jack L with the Electric Gospel Choir.

“It went better than we could have hoped for.

Events were greatly supported and from the feedback we’re getting, people absolutely loved the gigs and workshops. It was great to be able to listen to other choirs and see all the various styles which different choirs incorporate in their songs and music, from Elvis style to ‘Happy Day’ stuff” Last year the festival attracted representatives from 15 gospel choirs from across the country, with eight full choirs performing over the weekend.

Gospel Rising 2011 takes place in Portlaoise over the weekend of May 6th-8th.

e got another ‘serving’ of MAD in 2010.

And once again, it was a brilliant experience. MAD 2010 took place last June 21st in Wicklow. This was the third MAD music festival - following on from MAD 2008 and MAD 2009 before that.

MAD 2010 returned some of the previous year’s line-up like L Z 7, the highly energetic, rock/hip hop rappers from the UK. Also returning was Shell Perris, former UK girl-band star; Irish group, Emmaus; and the Donking R breakdancers.

New to MAD were the household name gospel choir, Dublin Gospel Choir who brought their uplifting gospel sounds that had you singing, clapping and dancing along with them. Also new to MAD we had Godfrey Chimb, aka the Tone who sang his single, ‘Not on my own’ which he officially released last February.

Also on the 2010 line-up was Northern Ireland’s Rend Collective Experiment. The band started in 2004 as a group of 20 somethings trying yo figure out life, God and community. It has since grown into a well-respected group at home and beyond.

They have released songs like ‘You bled’ and ‘Faithful’, are really heartfelt , soulful songs that reach right at your core. Rend Collective Experiement is different from other Christian bands, the sound different and they are good.

A key highlight of the 8 hours of MAD 2010 was the powerful praise and worship, particularly with Worship Central Band and Y Friday. It was truly ‘praise for real people’ as it was described. by the organisers. You just didn’t want it to end.

All that was in the Big Top, where the main music activity was. With all the other activities and the vast space and great weather, MAD had so many options for fun, entertainment and ministry whichever age group you were in or preferences you had.

gospel fusion July 2010. The very first Gospel Fusion took place at St Mark’s Church on Pearse Street, Dublin. Walking into the building, one immediately started looking around to spot familiar faces. Spot the singers and musicians you met at most gospel events because they support other.

The mood was light, fun and very much relaxed. Then the concert started. There about ten serate performers over the evening. Anton Cullen, Joseph Fitzgerald, Kim Taylor, John Broderick and St Mark’s new Fusion Gospel Choir were among them. They gave a beautiful musical selection of classical, blues, jazz and gospel music. the Fusion Gospel Choir sang the old time favourite ‘O Happy Day’, ‘Soon and very soon’, ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘I want Jesus to walk with me’. Paul Sundarland gave a powerful rendition of ‘I can only imagine’, while Rachel Byrne and John Broderick’s operatic presentation of the classic song, ‘The Prayer’ was just stunning.

In a nutshell, Gospel Fusion was ‘music talent unleashed’.

They were simply excellent and so gifted by any standard.

All the participants are members of St Mark’s, but not all of them involved in the church music group. These, Gospel Fusion gave the opportunity to use their gifts.

Food for thought - there must be a good number of musically gifted people in the church. In most traditional churches, the only avenue for them to use their gift is in the church choir. Worth exploring other ways one could use their gifts to reach and impact lives with and beyond the traditional avenues - which are great but not the only means.

HITTING THE CHARTS

UK Christian rap group, LZ7 singing at Victory Centre last June ahead of their appearance at MAD 2010.

The band had a great year in 2010 with their single This Little Light making No 26 on the UK Singles Chart and No 4 on the UK Indie chart. They also won three trophies at the Louder Than Music Awards - Best British Album, Best British Artist and Song of the Year for This Little Light.

Ennis, in particular the Glor Theatre, was a hub for gospel events in the earlier part of 2010. In April, just before the Gospel Rising in May, Glor Theatre held the Afro-Irish Music Concert, described as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;an extravaganza of African and Irish Gospel musicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The concert, organised by Foundation Ministries Ireland, featured Debsandy, Camara, Ennis Gospel Choir, Rev Chinwe, Fabrice and the Foundation Ministries Youth, among others.

At the Centre, LZ7 told the young people about their Shine Your Light campaign.

The campaign, they say, is all about inspiring young people to let their light shine by making â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;goodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fashionable again.

GOSPO REMIX LIVE

Gospo Remix’s live concert last August was energetic! The lads, and ladies, were on fire!

Sustaining a steadily high level of energy from start to finish.

YN pulled the gang together once again to put on a great night of music, and this time with a live band. Gospo Remix fans know the guys always put on a good music event, but they were better than they have ever been.

They performed favourites from Gospo Remix 2008 and 2009 including ‘A Very Big God O’, ‘You are the Pillar’, ‘Here I am to Worship’, ‘Lord I lift Your Name’ and of course, ‘Wamilele’.

YN is making his mark on the Irish gospel scene, and though we did not see a follow on Gospo Remix 2010, watch that space, we are sure he has a lot more to bring - there will be a lot more coming from him.

broadcasting live Bringing Good News to Ireland’s Airwaves Spirit Radio, Ireland’s first national Christian radio station went live on January 27th, 2011 in Dublin. The long-awaited national Christian radio station will initially be available in Dublin (89.9), Cork (88.7), Limerick (89.8), Galway (89.5) and Waterford (90.1) on FM. It will however go live all over Ireland on AM by July 2012.

Spirit Radio, which has previously only been available online, will continue to play the best of contemporary Christian music alongside a mix of mainstream, positive chart music.

Presenters will highlight reports that show the relevance of Christian faith today, getting Christian voices speaking on current affairs and issues of the day and highlighting how faith in God does make a real difference. It will cover lively discussions with thought provoking stories, from the humorous to the heart warming, but above all, uplifting.

Speaking about the launch, Rob Clarke, CEO of Spirit Radio said, “Today, across the nation, men and women are facing real and sometimes overwhelming challenges. Spirit Radio will reach into homes, cars and offices bringing a message of hope and direction. It will help people take steps to begin or renew their relationship with God. Spirit will help people discover fresh meaning and purpose.”

And here at Gospel Republic we are counting trust that the station will play gospel music from Ireland as well.

bring us together ‘Bring Us Together’ was the theme of what is planned to be an annual concert that will, as the theme states, bring together musicians from various churches in concert. The 2010 concert was organised by United Forward in Christ and Victory Centre.

There was a variety of artists and churches participating, like the young Christ Co-Worker ladies whose had their harmonies so beautifully blended they hadn’t a note out of place! Kate Madoo also ministered at the concert and led worship. She featured a mix of music styles, including some ragga/reggae beats that are rarely heard in this part of town.

New gospel band, The Proof gave a performance to remember, including their own version of ‘When love comes to town’, complete with guitar solos by Brian Leviste, who is without doubt one of the best Christian guitarists in Ireland.

GOSPEL LEGEND IN DUBLIN

ANDRAE CROUCH Thanks to Gospel Music Ireland who brought Andrae Crouch, a multi-grammy award winner and gospel legend and pioneer, to Ireland. Andrae ministered in a joint concert which featured himself and Israel Houghton as key headline musicians.

A gospel singer, musician, producer and minister, Andrae is a pioneer of contemporary gospel music.

Having grown up at the time when gospel music was greatly rooted in long-standing traditions, Andrae is credited for playing a big part in revolutionalising Christian music into today’s comtemporary music that we have today.

He has received seven Grammy Awards and at least five Dove Awards. Well known gospel and Christian musicians and singers like Cece and Bebe Winans, Israel Houghton count him as a strong influencer. He also worked with Michael Jackson on some of his music including ‘Man in the Mirror’.

Andrae told the June concert audience that he had had the opportunity to pray the prayer of commitment with Michael Jackson before he passed away.

His main hit songs and much loved favourites include, ‘Through it all’, ‘The blood shall never lose its power’ and ‘To God be the glory’ which are still sang today.

From the participation at the concert, one could see that there were many in the audience who have followed his music over the years and new his songs.

een-Line Ireland was founded by Maureen Bolger following the tragic death by suicide of her son Darren. Following Darren’s death Maureen Bolger was shocked to discover the lack of services available to young people. Teenagers expressed to Maureen they felt they were in between, too old for one helpline and too old for another.

Teen-line Ireland is a Free - phone National Helpline for young

people who may be feeling lonely, worried, stressed out or suicidal. We are based in Tallaght and we need the following volunteers urgently to cope with the demand of calls we receive every day.

Helpline Volunteers – Potential volunteers must be 21 years and over, full training provided, maximum 9 hours per month volunteering at night time only.

Fundraising Volunteers – We are looking for young vibrant people

(18 years and over)to plan and run dynamic fundraising events to raise much needed funds for Teen-line Ireland. Volunteers will meet approximately once a month and the timings will be flexible subject to your availability.

GOSPEL VOICES 2011 features a uniquely diverse array of gospel artists from various cultural backgrounds. They have incorporated their own into the music resulting in a rich blend of sounds and rhythms to what is gospel music in Ireland.

Fred Hammond, another major actor on the global gospel music scene whose travels over 2010 brought him to Ireland.

Fred Hammond was guest artist at the RCCG annual Holy Ghost Service. He ministered in music to a congregation of about 20,000 people who attended the service in Citywest, Dublin.

XTIAN’S GOT TALENT SHOW At the ‘younger’ end of the 2010 service, the youth had their own activities. One being a talent show - Xtians Got Talent. One after another young people came out and performed before their peers and a panel of judges.

Gospel Republic did not get to see the final outcome but it was amazing how gifted these young people are musically, and great to see that they were getting the opportunity and had the boldness to try their talents, stretch themselves and be innovative.

DUBLIN INTERNATIONAL GOSPEL MUSIC FESTIVAL

New gospel music festival in tow Ireland’s only multicultural newspaper, Metro Eireann, held the first of what will be an annual gospel music festival - the Dublin International Gospel Music Festival - last September at the Convention Centre, Dublin.

The inaugural festival had a line-up mostly of gospel artists, bands and choirs, but also included other acts who incorporated a gospel theme to their music on the night.

The Dublin Gospel Choir, Discovery Gospel Choir and RCCG Praise Team where the three choirs involved, which performing quite different style of choir songs. YN’s Gospo Remix were a highlight on the night, as well as gospel singer, Alva. The MC, ‘Funny man’ Fabu D, rose to the challenge of dishing out jokes to a culturally diverse audience, which he did remarkably well.

Prior to the concert there were workshops on singing, voice training, digital music production, the history of gospel music, as well as on issues around faith, race and integration from a music perspective.

Through the festival, Metro Eireann aimed to bring together a diverse community through music. From the diversity of the performers on stage, the music and the audience, they achieved their goal.

CRABB REVIVAL IN DUBLIN

Last September, Dublin got a taste of sound southern gospel with Adam Crabb, of the award-winning Crabb Family Band, who brought the Crabb Revival into town.

When the Crabb family decided to disband in 2007 after 12 years of ministry, Adam, together with other band members and siblings, decided to keep the legacy going, and set up a new band. They have gone on to make their own mark on the gospel music in the US and beyond. The concert in Dublin was part of their Crabb Revival tour that had them ministering across the US and Europe.

In Dublin they gave a powerful evening of powerful music, ministry and worship. Each of the band members is really good. The music was great, vocals, harmonies and the musicians. But beyond their musical excellence, the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s focus was obvious from the onset - hearts for God and for Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s people.

They are ministers to the core, worshippers. Over and over they made that point - to them it was about God, and about souls, ministering to the hurting and those who need the love of God. Adam said the high point of any concert they had was seeing people give their lives to God, seeing gettng people healed and free.

he Allen-taylor brothers, Adeniyi and Seyi, put on another Oba Nla Concert in 2010. On the theme â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;180 hours in Lagosâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, the concert showcased gospel music set in African culture.

Technical, from the setting of the venue, the artists and most of the songs and music play, for those three or so hours, we were in Lagos.

Over 500 people attended Oba Nla, mostly Africans but there audience had a good number of Irish, Chinese, Polish and people other nationalities.

There were 10 artistes performing. Firstly Adeniyi, who is also the visionary behind Oba Nla. He played songs from his 2010 album, ‘So Good’. He played a number of well -known songs on the saxophone with the audience singing along.

Other singers were the Children of Soweto, taking us out of Lagos into South Africa.

Discovery Gospel Choir, with a blend of culture in their music, including a song in Yoruba, a Nigerian language.

Tunde Esho and his two backing vocals ‘went mad’ with his hit ‘Go Mad’ - MAD meaning ‘Make a Difference. Still they did some crazy dancing, and why not.

They were two artists in from the UK, Jahmain and worship leader Wola Awolola. Wola led an intense session of worship, testifying to God who heard his cry and saved his son from death. The worship was great before that testimony, but afterwards, it went ‘through the roof’.

Other artists were Youths 4 Yahweh, the African Gospel Choir, Shaday, and Billy Gbadamosi.

The organisers say the concert was a great way for non Africans to get to know God more through African music and culture, and for the Africans to get to hear great African rhythms, which is scarce in Ireland.

For all gospel music lovers, the concert was soul lifting and gave them the opportunity to meet likeminded people, talk , share ideas and enjoy God’s presence together.

Gospel Rising Music Festival 2011 Friday May 6 - Sunday May 8, Portlaoise Gospel Rising in 2011 will take place in Portlaoise over the weekend of May 6-8 2011.

The spirit of fun, as always, will be kept to the fore, and we aim to produce an atmosphere where people will learn something new and further their development as gospel music performers.
