Participants will create beautiful oceaninspired, one-of-a-kind shell objects that can be a treasured keepsake or fabulous gift. Robin Grubman has been working with shells for the past 21 years. She was previously a proprietor of The Reef Boutique on Worth Avenue and now a vendor at Circa Who. She will be sharing her talents and techniques in mastering the art of shelling.

Personalities, Events and Artists of the 18th Century

Meet historical figures such as Peter the Great and Captain Cook and philosophers such as Voltaire and John Locke. Study the birth of science and learn about leading figures in the arts such as composers Bach and Handel, artists including Gainsborough and Mme. Vigée-Lebrun, and the first novelists. History’s changing movements, such as those leading to the French Revolution, will underlie the sessions.

The Evolution of the Symphony Orchestra

Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. December 15; January 19; February 9; March 16; April 13 $100 for series

This class focuses on the first decades of the 19th century and the composers responsible for the development of its musical styles. We will analyze symphonic works from Mendelssohn to Tchaikovsky, as well as the great piano and violin concertos. We also will outline the influence of Nationalism and the creation of the Tone Poem.

Juliette de Marcellus is a pianist, prize-winning music critic and lecturer. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London and with professor Leonie Gombrich at Oxford.

Ariane Csonka Comstock enriches the experience of opera with extensive background material in literature, stage and costume design, language, history, and politics. She will illustrate performances with DVDs, videos, and recordings of charismatic stars past and present, and will lead discussions of current productions around the world. Opera buffs and beginners alike are welcome!

Freeform Expression in Charcoal, Pastels, and Acrylic Inks

This class will emphasize freeform expression of personal styles within the context of time-honored principles and techniques with respect to shapes, light, shadows, and media. Yelitza Károlyi received instruction from Ronnie Landfield and Max Ginsburg at The Art Students League of New York.

Intermediate Bridge with Bill Greenspan

These classes are appropriate for individuals who have a minimum of three years of bridge playing experience. A thorough understanding of Jacoby transfer bids, Stayman, Takeout doubles, Blackwood and Gerber is a prerequisite. Bill Greenspan began playing bridge while in college. He played in numerous regional and sectional tournaments achieving the rank of life master at age 27.

Color Theory and The Power of Planning

This watercolor class will inspire beginners and provide a review and challenge for the advanced student. By participating you learn to “see” and experience some of the different aspects of color theory and of painting light on objects, helping you develop your creativity. By exploring different design concepts, you will experience and understand the power of planning. Sue Archer belongs to Watercolor USA Honor Society, and is a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society. Her award-winning paintings have been exhibited in national, regional, and state competitions and hang in numerous corporate and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and South America.

The History of the Grands Châteaux of the Loire Valley and Île-de-France

In this series, Russell Kelley will link architecture with history. Trace the evolution of the French château from the earliest stone donjons and châteaux forts of the Middle Ages, through the magnificent Renaissance châteaux built by the Valois kings in the Loire Valley upon their return from the Italian Wars, and on to the châteaux de plaisance built by the Bourbon kings and queens and their court in and around Paris in the French Baroque/Classical style. Kelley will conclude with the Château du Louvre, whose history spans eight centuries. Kelley is the author of The Making of Paris: The Story of How Paris Evolved from a Fishing Village into the World’s Most Beautiful City (Lyons Press, 2021), and Vice President of the Alliance Française Miami Metro. He has lived in France for nearly 30 years and has visited every château featured in this series many times since his first visit to the Loire Valley 50 years ago.

K.I.S.S. (Keep it Simple Supper) Party

Shelley Gubelmann, Palm Beacher and Trustee at The Four Arts, demonstrates how to give a fluster and stress free, casual and enjoyably easy supper for about eight friends. In this session, Shelley will do a demonstration of 2-2-2: Two easy starters, two simple main courses and two ridiculously easily put together desserts. At the end of the demonstration, participants will be able to sample the delicious goodies they have seen being made. Go home ready to impress your friends with your ability to entertain in a relaxed and stylish way.

Lady Diana Cooper: “The Most Beloved Woman in England”

The era from World War I through The Jazz Age and just beyond World War II in England and France was a time of explosive creativity in the arts, world political upheaval, and enormous technological advances that changed everyday life. Lady Diana Manners Cooper (1892-1986), the British aristocrat, stage and film actress, designer, author, volunteer nurse, and famously glamorous social figure was at the center of it all. Art historian Lacy Davisson will discuss Cooper and her circle of English aristocrats and intellectuals including: The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Cecil Beaton, Winston Churchill, D.H. Lawrence, Sergei Diaghilev, Evelyn Waugh, Virginia Woolf, Nancy Mitford, and D.W. Griffith.

Still Life Painting

Breath light into your still life with a more thoughtful approach. Combine vision and knowledge to paint extraordinary compositions. Learn how to think about painting “light” instead of objects. Jeff Legg’s thought process will be revealed through setting up a concept and executing it by going directly to paint in this multi-day workshop. Daily demonstrations and commentary throughout the process will provide the opportunity to understand his painting methodology. There will be open discussion of material choices, prop selection, paint application, values, color palette and lighting. One-on-one critiques will be provided with special attention to individual needs. Beginner to advanced students are welcome.
