THE ART OF LIVING WELL

The Society of the Four Arts proudly presents programs from its Campus on the Lake department guaranteed to enrich and elevate your daily existence.

The master class, “Conversations on Style” with Steven Stolman, premieres on December 2. Stolman is a designer and writer best known to Palm Beachers as the creator of the eponymous resortwear brand that, during its existence, featured a shop on Worth Avenue. For a little more than a decade, his label graced the wardrobes of stylish women and men alike, and was considered part and parcel to the Palm Beach look. Stolman has been a frequent presenter at The Four Arts, beginning with his appearance as Addison Mizner in “The Palm Beach Follies.” His engaging book talks and signings have delighted Four Arts audiences over the years.

“He is amusing, funny, and witty — a show in and of himself,” said Sofia Vollmer Maduro, The Four Arts’ director of programs. “We have the perfect presenter to lead a series of casual interviews on style.”

Stolman’s first book, Scalamandré: Haute Décor, featured tales from his three years as President of the home furnishing band, leading a broad expansion of products. He has made Palm Beach his primary residence since 2014 and is currently working on his seventh book along with countless articles for Town & Country magazine and consulting for interior designers and home furnishings manufacturers.

Stolman’s conversation on December 2 will feature Robert Carvaggi on “The Story of Swifty’s — The Iconic Social Saloon.” Caravaggi co-founded Swifty’s in New York in 1999, and its regulars included style icons Aerin Lauder, Martha Stewart, and Michael Kors. A Swifty’s Palm Beach opened at The Colony in December 2019, closed in March, and was scheduled to reopen again at the end of October. 14 Fall 2020 Folio

Jeffrey S. Morton, Ph.D.

American Foreign Policy

Dr. Jeffrey Morton returns to The Four Arts by popular demand following last season’s sold-out lecture series! Audiences have twice as many opportunities this season to hear the 2019 Florida Atlantic University Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Dr. Morton, a Professor of World Politics at FAU, has planned six presentations on global challenges that are rapidly changing. Not one of the topics is what it was a decade ago and each one’s future evolution will have enormous strategic implications for the United States and the international system.

“These are all topics specifically chosen due to their relevance and importance to the Palm Beach community,” said Sofia Vollmer Maduro, The Four Arts’ director of programs. “Even if you have seen

with Juliette de Marcellus

Dr. Morton speak on these topics before, they have all been fully updated to address today’s concerns.”

Dr. Morton received his Master’s degree from Rutgers University in 1991 and his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina in 1995. The author of three books, numerous journal articles and book chapters, Professor Morton has published on issues ranging from the legality of interventions and weapons of war to the United Nations, Israeli security and U.S. foreign policy, and has lectured nationally on matters relating to U.S. foreign policy.

Origins of Modernism in Art

Mondays at 11:30 a.m $25 per lecture

January 4: Cubism February 8: Futurism March 1: Abstraction

In the five years leading up to World War I, diverse groups of artists laid the foundations for the twentieth-century avant-garde. Three lectures will specifically deal with the origins and meanings of French Cubism, Italian Futurism and European abstraction, and with artists such as Picasso, Braque, Boccioni, Balla, Kupka, Kandinsky and Mondrian. Their revolution overturned a tradition 500 years long of “realism” (greater or less) in European art. The course concludes with Jackson Pollock, whose “Abstract Expressionism” made him not only the most renowned American painter of the 20th century but signaled the end of the abstract tradition that had begun with the pre-World War I avant-garde.

Philip Rylands is an art historian who for more than 37 years was responsible for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, immediately following the death of its founder. In 1986, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation purchased the U.S. Pavilion of the Venice Biennale, which has been operated by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection with the US Department of State since 1985. Dr. Rylands is President of the Society of the Four Arts.
