Think Local I know you’ll agree with me when I say that there are endless distinctive reasons we’ve chosen to live in this spectacular community, a place that we each call home. Communities like ours are far and few between, take a look out there – really. Where else can you live on intertwining streets, where local small business owners are also your neighbors? It’s not in every community that you’ll find such a unique variety of organized social events, spirited and academically excelling schools, focused volunteer committees, even deliberated surveys with encouraged responses – yours. The Estrella lifestyle is certainly unique. Isn’t it great to reside in a neighborhood that still receives community building information through a resourceful community newspaper, My Hometown Estrella, each and every month? Estrella is wealthy with great people and great resources; many of those resources are the small business owners living right next door. By choosing to buy and utilize the services of those local businesses, we are choosing to maintain that sustainable, small-town investment which defines our abundant living space; it’s a large part of what makes Estrella such a great place to live. This month My Hometown Estrella is highlighting

the efforts of local businesses and their services. Small business owners have contributed messages about their services, sharing the ways that they are locally involved, in an effort to help us all maintain, preserve, embellish and utilize their services without breaking the bank. We know that times are tough out there, so we’ve addressed the issue with some tips to encourage small business survival during trying times. In addition, we’re celebrating the fact that summer temperatures are lowering slightly, with an invitation to the season’s final dive-in movie at the Starpointe Resident’s Club pool, along with an article of accolades about resident athletes, an introduction of a new chef, and a personal invitation to a birthday celebration. The way I see it, when your business, your cause, or your intention is geared toward making an impact on what really matters, you’re sure to make a positive influence on others – you can’t go wrong. Because, as a business or individual, putting your best foot forward and doing the right thing for everyone involved helps put us all in touch with the right people, the best solutions. Keep the great community resources circulating. Keep putting your best foot forward!

“I learned how to deal with every kind of person and built a good foundation for future jobs.” Sierra Wilferd

Several Estrella Foothills High School students (aka, The Yellow Brigade) were employed at The Starpointe Café this summer, bringing poolside service to resident swimmers during recent months at the Waterpark. The Starpointe Café owners, Chef Michael and Norma Cunningham have enjoyed working with, learning from and teaching the student-employees during the summer months. “They were a source of daily inspiration and fun,” recall the Cunninghams.

“Working at Starpointe Café has allowed me to cultivate the skills that I obtained through Chef Cunningham AKA “Magic Mike” showing a young chef a magician’s tricks in the kitchen on how to give food its magical deliciousness.” Luis Viniegra

Dining Review The Player’s Grill at Golf Club of Estrella You’re in for a pleasant surprise! First Impression: I’ll admit it, I was a bit skeptical. My reservation for two was set for 5:30pm, on a scorching July Arizona evening. I knew that the extreme weather conditions would mean that my dining experience at The Player’s Grill meant indulging on unfamiliar entrées indoors, within the compact dining space which overlooked the walk-up counter and tiny kitchen at the Golf Club of Estrella. In my mind, the indoor eating space was designed to accommodate hot and thirsty mid-day golfers with cold brews accompanied by deep-fried lunches. But, to my surprise, this evening’s setting took on a new and comfortable transformation from the moment of arrival. A first name greeting was ‘step one’ to the novel and newly-enhanced first impression. The palate-pleasing experience proceeded to become increasingly desirable, beginning with the attentiveness of our knowledgeable server Danae.

The Meal: Upon being seated, our server guided us through the evening’s dining experience with focus from start to finish. Tonight’s fare featured the new community celebrity chef, Chris Dangerfield’s, homemade creations. We began with a hummus and pita appetizer and a glass of wine from the full-service bar. The pita was warm and soft and paired nicely with the smooth hummus. Following the satisfying appetizer was a fresh spring mix salad with a base of homemade ranch dressing swirled beneath the bed of greens. The top of the salad was drizzled with a decorative line

of balsamic vinaigrette glaze. The combination of new level of quality to the dishes he prepares for his sweet and creamy accents gave a flawless taste and Arizona dinner guests. presentation. A review of the menu by Danae, revealed the evening’s entrées, including specially-featured Pork tenderloin, stuffed with roasted red peppers and mozzarella cheese, with a tomato rosemary brown butter sauce, served with Garlic herb angel hair pasta and freshly grilled vegetables, which I ordered. The tenderloin melted in my mouth and the presentation, exceptional! On the side was a bed of artfully twisted and lightly seasoned pasta accompanied by colorful, grilled, vegetables. It was as if Chef Dangerfield delivered the ambiance of his former up-state New York restaurant to our table with each freshly prepared course. For dessert, we treated ourselves to homemade vanilla bean ice cream, which was topped with fresh raspberries and blueberries. It was the perfect treat for cooling off on that hot summer’s evening. After a remarkable pleasurable dining experience, I highly encourage you to treat yourself, even your special guests, to an exceptional evening of delicious food at The Player’s Grill at the Golf Club of Estrella.

The Chef: Chef, Chris Dangerfield, has joined the culinary staff at the Golf Club of Estrella. He is new to the area after residing in up-state New York where he owned and operated a small, up-scale restaurant. Chris also worked in Napa Valley for Domain Chandron and with Michael Charello from the Food Network. Without a doubt, he has brought a

Additional Menu options included:

• Chicken and Shrimp Sauté with Feta, Tomato, Greek Olives, And Marjoram Sauce • Seared Beef Tenderloin Medallions with Potato, Parmesan Gratin and a Fresh Basil Cabernet Sauce • Roasted Filet of Atlantic Salmon with Pico de Gallo and Key Lime Sauce • Sautéed Chicken Scallopine with Garlic Herb Angel Hair Pasta and Jalapeno Skyy Vodka Sauce • Chicken Caesar Salad - Fresh Romaine with Parmesan, Croutons, Mixed with our Caesar Dressing topped With a Grilled Chicken Breast • Ahi Tuna- Seared Ahi Tuna seared in a Garlic Oil with a Fresh Tomato Basil Sauce and Herb • Angel Hair Pasta Desserts • Decadent Chocolate Cake decorated with Chocolate and Strawberry Sauces topped with Whipped Cream • Tangy Key Lime Pie decorated with Wild Berry Puree and Whipped Cream • New York Style Cheese Cake with Chocolate and Strawberry Sauces topped with Whipped Cream Prices ranged from $10.75 to $16.25.

Comments from Management: Golf Club of Estrella’s Food and Beverage Manager, Brad Groll, is pleased to announce the addition of Chef Dangerfield to his culinary staff, stating, “We have been working on several different menus and have found one that seems to have something for everyone. Responses from our guests have been very positive over the past few months. Chef Chris Dangerfield has brought a new level of quality and an eye for detail to all of the creations he prepares. If you’re looking for a nice relaxing evening, come up and give us a try. Enjoy a bottle of wine or cocktail, a wonderful meal and a beautiful sunset.” For reservations call 623-9253148.

school news Westar Elementary School Reaches Out Submitted by: Melisa Olsen, Westar Elementary School Secretary Summer fun, vacations, and activities are winding down for most families in the Estrella community, despite the continued high temperatures. Vacations have ended, memories have been made, and the much anticipated, but often too long, family visits have come to a close and families are starting to get back into a routine. Students have returned to school, eager to participate in another year of learning and classroom adventures. The students and staff at Westar Elementary School recognize that there are those in our own community, as well as in surrounding communities, that spend these long, and very hot, summer months simply engaged in the continued struggle to provide shelter, food, and clothing for their families. According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, Arizona scores among the worst in poverty levels which have continued to worsen over the past several years.

Mrs. Carrie Hill’s class sorted the collected food into categories each month. The class analyzed the data from the collections – perfecting tally marks and tables – and made bar graphs and pie charts that they compared and extracted all kinds of information from. Mrs. Hill’s class also had the opportunity to work on public speaking and communication skills through this outreach by going into other classrooms to share food collection results and encourage further campus participation. The student’s responses to the activity were tremendously positive! T: “ We got to help people who needed food and we learned how to sort it out.” E: “ We learned to help other people and it helped our counting. We made pie charts.” S: “ I learned that team work is the best reward. I learned how to graph, and how to sort.”

With this in mind, our staff and students are again planning to work together during this school year to reach out to those in need by sponsoring a yearlong food drive to benefit the Agua Fria Food & Clothing Bank. Located in central Avondale and run with the help from over 75 volunteers, the Agua Fria Food & Clothing bank serves the poor and needy in Southwest Maricopa County. In 2010 they were able to assist over 45,000 people! Westar Elementary was excited to be a part of helping those in need by donating over 5,000 food items during the 20112012 school year – over 1600 pounds of food!

If you haven’t already done so, take a moment today and consider how you might reach out to those who might be less fortunate. Sometimes it’s easy to default into thinking that there are others out there taking care of things and that our help isn’t needed. The truth is that there are several organizations here in the West Valley committed to reaching out to those hurting or in need. However, if we work together, each one doing his or her part, we will have the greatest opportunity to impact our surrounding communities and we’ll all be better because of it!

This program, using the pillars of character from Character Counts and Victory with Honor, will help students learn about traits that we hope they possess and exhibit in their daily lives. Throughout the year, each Honor Pillar will be focused on for approximately four weeks. During that time, school-wide announcements and curriculum within classrooms will be used to teach students the meanings of each character trait. Posters and street signs in the hallways will remind students of the pillars. There will be dress up days where students and staff are encouraged to dress in the color of the pillar being focused on at that time. And, Pride of the Pack awards will recognize individuals that exhibit the traits of Pack Pride. We encourage parents and members of the community to ask students about the Honor Pillars and share experiences where exhibiting those traits has helped them in life.

September

The Honor Pillars, with their associated color and a reminder of their meaning, are: Trustworthiness – Blue – True Blue Respect – Yellow – The Golden Rule Responsibility – Green – Go Green Fairness – Orange – Share an Orange (to be fair) Caring – Red – Have a Heart Citizenship – Purple – The Color of Royalty

Submitted by: Principal, Sharon Marine News from the Media Center: Estrella Mountain Elementary School is celebrating the 2012 Olympic Games with the “Go for Gold! Olympic Reading Program”. Our students are logging in their nightly reading minutes to work their way up the medal podium to earn bronze, silver or gold medals of their own. Please come out and support our student readers at our All Star Readers Book Fair which will be held in our school library September 10 & 11 from 7:30am to 5:00pm, September 12 & 13 from 7:30am to 7:00pm and September 14 from 7:30am to 1:00pm. Stay tuned for information on Preschool Story Time starting soon. News from academics: Estrella Mountain is very excited to have earned an “A” rating from Arizona Department of Education. This grade is a compilation of total students passing AIMS, total growth of all students, and growth of the bottom 25 percent of students. We are also proud to have the second highest passing scores in reading and writing as a school in the entire southwest valley. Our passing scores for science and math were among the top scores also. As you can see, the staff worked extremely hard last year to give each child a quality education. News from the Arts: Our third grade students will be given the opportunity to participate in a residency with Ballet Arizona. Ballet Arizona will have a free performance in Estrella Mountain Ranch on Saturday, September 22. In conjunction with the performance, Ballet Arizona is reaching out to schedule a free 3-week Class Act residency at Estrella Mountain Elementary School with our third grade students after school. A professional ballet dancer from the company will work with students. (They find that third grade students are very receptive to ballet and creative movement.) The third graders will be introduced to ballet concepts and choreography. The students will then perform a short dance on stage during Ballet Under the Stars.

Volunteer…A Gift to the Community. Raise your hand We have all heard it; Estrella is a great community in which to live. It takes a tremendous amount of time and levels of talent to put on the many 100+ events that our community offers for all ages. There is no other community like this. Really! By you raising your hand to volunteer, for at least one event twice a year, would make our already exciting Estrella so much grander. Volunteering will bring us closer to our extended neighborhood; will give us a warm and fuzzy feeling, will lift our hearts and spirits and that is just the beginning. Volunteering is truly a ‘gift’ that anyone can do. It does not matter if you check people in, refill the water bucket, greet guests with a smile, organize an event and/or make a few phone calls, all of these are needed and Estrella needs you. Look over our busy calendar of events, groups and meetings to see what Estrella keeps offering for all of us. Make a difference. Raise your hand and give Estrella a little of your time. Give your ‘Gift’ to Estrella and ‘Volunteer’.

Estrella Yacht Club The Yacht Club is a very cool amenity for Estrella residents. We offer paddleboats, kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, and both catamaran and mono-hulled sailboats. These vessels are gratis for Estrella residents. In addition, Cap’n Salty will teach you how to sail a boat. Classes are offered the second Saturday of every month, barring inclement weather. Since March 2012, a total of 87 residents have taken the class, and were able to put the lessons learned to task on the water afterwards. We also offer basic boating safety instruction for Estrella youth so that they will feel more at ease on the water. Feel free to drop the kids off. Cap’n Salty will have them sailing in no time! Several improvements have been made to the Yacht Club in the last few months, including a flat panel TV and sound system, new color scheme and an undeniable island vibe. The Yacht Club is just plain fun! New projects are ongoing…stop by to check it out. The Yacht Club has averaged 150 users per month thus far for 2012. We would love to increase those numbers.

on your doorstep Dust Off Your Ride Submitted by Carl Deierling, VP & Acting President of the Estrella Car Club

Estrella Mountain Car Club is coming out of the summer doldrums with a meeting at Starpointe on Saturday, September 8 at 9am. Their monthly car show will be on Saturday, September 22 at the Safeway Parking lot starting at 8am. All car enthusiasts are encouraged to come to the meeting. And you don’t need to be a member to dust off your car and show it off at the car show. We’d love to see your “ride.” Following this event we will continue down to the ballpark, where a Junior Olympics Softball Championship will be held and our cars will be displayed in a prominent position in front of the ballpark. This 10am to 8pm charity event at the ballpark will be a gala affair with dignitaries and a fireworks closing and all are invited to come, even if you don’t have a car to show.

Youth Group at Estrella Mountain Church Creates “The 5th Quarter” Are you a high school student, looking for entertainment on Friday evenings after home varsity football games? The Student Leadership Team for OneLife Youth Group at Estrella Mountain Church hears the urgent requests from teens regarding the need for ‘something to do’ following Friday night home games at the high school. The 5th Quarter is a fun and safe alternative to after parties that many teens currently attend. This safe spot for students to gather will take place at the home of a participating resident and will be announced by OneLife Youth Group students through handouts at school and through information on the emcaz.org website. Students in attendance can expect fun activities such as swimming, music and dancing, s’mores by the firepit and more. This student-driven opportunity is brought to the community by members of the OneLife Youth Group, who are eager to share the prospect of providing a safe and entertaining party alternative in a drug and alcohol free environment. Nate Evanko, Pastoral Intern of Student Ministries at Estrella Mountain Church said, “We recognize that teens have lots of things that they do after these football games that are not healthy, leading them down a path that can be highly destructive.” For more information on September locations for The 5th Quarter, contact Nate at 623-693-6415 or visit www.emcaz.org/5thquarter and follow the OneLife Youth Group informational page. You may also find OneLife Youth Group on FaceBook.

Area Home Builder Offers To Lease Your Home Submitted by: Martha Moyer Wagoner, Martha@MasterPlannedCommunications.com

The real estate market is showing strong signs of recovering, but some people may still be in a position where they need to buy a little more time in recouping some of their home’s value. CantaMia has a solution. Buy a new home at CantaMia in Estrella and the builder will arrange for the lease-back of your existing homes for up to six years, if the home owner buys a new home in the gated, active adult community. The program ensures a monthly rent payment, even if there isn’t a tenant. “Some folks are tired of waiting to start the next chapter in their life and enjoying an active lifestyle. This program offers an amazing solution to their dilemma,” said Gary Sorrels, CantaMia sales manager. CantaMia is an award-winning gated, green and solar active adult community, located at the southern end of Estrella. For more information: www. CantaMia.com

Indians & Reds Donate $30,732 to local Youth Charities The City of Goodyear announced recently that the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds presented checks for $15,366 each to Goodyear-based charities Arizona In ACTION and Homeless Youth Connection from funds collected at the teams’ Spring Training exhibition charity game that occurred on March 5, 2012 at Goodyear Ballpark. The checks totaling $30,732 were presented to Arizona In ACTION’s Executive Director Jen Barber and Homeless Youth Connection’s Chairman & Founder Larry Cervarich recently at Goodyear Ballpark. The collective funds were raised from concession, merchandise, parking and ticket revenue at the March 5 game. “The Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds continue to be great community partners through their local charitable efforts,” said Nathan Torres, Goodyear’s Interim Parks & Recreation Director and General Manager of Goodyear Ballpark. “This is one small example of how both organizations continue to support many programs within our community.” Administrative Assistant, Sheryl Driscoll of Homeless Youth Connection shared that Homeless Youth Connection was selected to be the beneficiary of the Cleveland Indians & Cincinnati Reds Charity Game Day, which took place early in the spring. The organization had received proceeds of the Team Shop for one month the previous spring training season, prompting the attention of Ryan Lantz, AZ Operations Manager for the Cleveland Indians. “Mr. Lantz has since joined our Board of Directors and brought the game day to Homeless Youth Connection this season,” said Driscoll. Plans for the Proceeds? Homeless Youth Connection’s goal is to open and operate a transitional living facility in the West Valley. This facility would provide safe, emergency housing to homeless West Valley teens and would allow the Homeless Youth organization the ability to bring current programs to a centralized location. Currently offered are Life Skills classes, mentors, job search assistance, medical care, mental health counseling and tutoring. “With our own facility, we could bring all of these great programs to a single capacity,” stated Driscoll. Equally excited about being a recipient of this monetary award is Executive Director of Arizona In ACTION, Jennifer Barber. She said this was the second year that Arizona In ACTION has been a recipient of the Reds’ backing and that funds will be utilized to help maximize current programs like Lids on Arizona Kids, Turning Thoughts into ACTION, Arizona in ACTION Move-A-Thon, as well as instructional nutrition programs in West Valley schools. Jennifer Barber concluded, “Arizona in ACTION is incredibly grateful to the Reds, Indians, and the Goodyear Ballpark for all of their support. Our organization is founded on the premise of collaboration. And it’s this type of collaboration that makes a difference in helping Arizona residents of all ages to live healthier lifestyles!”

Three Rivers Historical Society Resumes Meetings The Three Rivers Historical Society resumes their monthly meetings September 18 at 3pm at the Goodyear Civic Center, 190 N. Litchfield Road, Suite 117. Each month we have a guest speaker who tells their story of the early days in the west valley. We continue to feature excellent speakers that are entertaining. You don’t have to be an “older timer” or even a member to come and enjoy our program, all are welcome. Our community cookbook, “A Taste of History” sold out in the first three months and we have received a new shipment of the popular cookbooks. Call Sally Kiko at 623-386-1397 for your copy. Prices are $15 each, or 2 for $24. The proceeds from the cookbook help fund the Centennial Trail at Estrella Park. my hometown: page 11

Chef, Chris Dangerfield Meet the newest member of the culinary team at The Player’s Grill at the Golf Club of Estrella, Chef Extraordinaire, Chris Dangerfield. Along with the Golf Club of Estrella’s food and beverage manager, Brad Groll, Chris is bringing a new level of dining elegance to Estrella, as well as a variety of ideas for the restaurant’s growth. Chris, his wife and their three boys moved to Arizona from upstate New York just less than one year ago to escape the cold winters of The Empire State, successfully completing the endurance of their first long-hot Arizona summer. While living in New York, Chris and his family owned a small up-scale restaurant, which accommodated forty tables of dining room seating, accompanied by many of the stresses of owning and running a business. Thus, in search of a better lifestyle for himself and his family, Chris has landed locally in a place where he can share his exquisite cooking skills with our community and bask in Arizona’s abundant sunshine. Currently, Chris is working closely with the food and beverage management team at the Golf Club of Estrella, sampling menu options to suit a variety of taste interests from dining customers. (See a list of menu items featured at the Player’s Grill on Friday and Saturday evenings in our Dining Review article this month.)

Chris first began dabbling with his interest in the food industry while working in a German restaurant in New York. His love of cooking was fuelled when living with an aunt, who owned a vineyard, in Napa Valley, California. In America’s most famous wine region, Chris worked for Domain Chandon, pairing amazing dishes with excellent wine choices and later worked alongside Michael Chairello from the Food Network. Accolades for Estrella’s newest chef include his gold medal, which he earned in New York’s annual Cornucopia Competition – a working opportunity for chefs to come together and spend a day competing in accordance to American Culinary Federation standards. A few objectives that the new culinary expert is working on to improve the dining experience for customers at the Golf Club of Estrella include gradual changes to move the kitchen outdoors during cooler months, with utilization of the outdoor grilling station, white table cloths and incorporating mussels and clams into menu options. “I’m working on things in baby steps, in hopes of bringing the level of dining up to the standards that the residents of Estrella will appreciate,” he said. Staple items you’re sure to find in Chef Dangerfield’s kitchen: “Definitely a chef ’s knife. This knife can do everything from dicing and slicing to creating decorative and artful accent foods,” says Chris. “Olive oil and onions are two other necessities. Onions can be transformed into sweet or savory additions to compliment a designer dish,” he added. Chef Dangerfield invites you to come into The Player’s Grill for dining on a Friday or Saturday evening. You’ll experience a meal that you won’t soon forget!

Treasured Tips from Local Business Owners: Sizzle with Shellac Nails Fashi o n Esse n t ial s f ro m Glo r ia St eph en s, Na il Te chni c i a n, “ T h e Ro s e H a i r S t u d i o”

What’s the hottest trend for beautiful fingernails this fall? SHELLAC! Maybe you’ve heard about the durability and endless color combinations this, more-natural-than-acrylic, product provides to help you achieve beautiful nails? Gloria Stephens, a nine-year resident of Estrella, formerly from Orange County, is a veteran Nail Technician at “The Rose Hair Studio,” located on Pebble Creek Parkway in Goodyear. She specializes in natural nail care and is excited about helping clients achieve beautiful hands and nails with this healthy alternative to acrylic nails. Unlike acrylics, that cause damage to the underlying nail and breed fungus and mold, Shellac is applied like a polish. Shellac has virtually no drying time, and holds its shimmer and luster for at least two weeks. What career woman or busy mother wouldn’t want instant, healthier, ready-to-go, beautiful nails? In a season that’s all about color, it’s beneficial for your fingernails to be both healthy and beautiful. Visit Gloria at The Rose Hair Studio, located at 2333 N. Pebblecreek Parkway, Suite A101 in Goodyear. (See The Rose Hair Studio ad for details on Aveda and other natural products). Gloria can be reached at 623-374-4688.

Are You in Hot Water? Sub mi tt ed by K u rt H a n k e , H a n dym a n Xtr e me

Cold showers feel great after a day spent relaxing by the pool, but what if you can’t get your shower to give you hot water? It’s time to ask yourself the important question – “Have I flushed my hot water heater regularly?” If your answer is ‘No,’ chances are you might find yourself visiting a home improvement store in the very near future to purchase a new water heater!

You see, over time, sediment and minerals build up on the inside of the water heater. It’s this buildup that reduces the water heater’s efficiency and lifespan. We suggest flushing your water heater at least once a year. Here in Arizona due to the extreme hardness of our water, it is actually recommended that you flush it every 6 months. Remember to use caution and read the instructions posted directly on the appliance before you take on this task, however. Draining it incorrectly can cause personal injury and damage to the tank. Considering a tankless water heater? Have a safe and happy September from Handyman Xtreme!

If Goodyear is your home-away-from-home, that probably means you are not here 100 percent of the time. Unfortunately, the weather does not care if you are in town or not. If you are away when a windstorm or flood hits, how will you know if your home is safe? Regardless of whether it’s a blown down tree or a shorted fuse, you’ll want to know how your home will be affected. And, if you are not there, who will take care of the damage and prevent further damage from occurring? Goodyear HomeWatch, a local, insured and respected home watch service company has just introduced new storm recovery services, so you can sleep well, wherever you are. Small-Business Survival Tips During a Tough Economy Owning your own business can be both rewarding and challenging. Some days it’s survival of the fittest in this ‘beastly jungle’ of an economy. Whether you own a small business for the purpose of earning a living, or as a means of supplemental income, it’s important to stay current on the tips and trends that will allow you to continue to stay afloat, enabling you to produce the goods and services that are essential to your customers, especially in tough times. The good news is that people, even in a downed economy, are still buying goods and services – maybe not at levels of indulgence from the past, but they are still spending. Nowadays, the best resource material for maintaining a small business may very well be a survival guide. Although we don’t have a magical formula to ensure business success, My Hometown Estrella has collected a variety of tips, to aid small business owners in triumphing over tough times, in order to walk with you on your journey through that jungle out there.

Looking to Start A New Business During Tough Times? Consider the Following 12 Small-Home Business Ideas that can Thrive During Tough Times: 1. Food Service – Customize your product to chalk up record sales. Small indulgences such as specially-made cookies or chocolates can be enjoyed at a customer’s home. 2. Financial Advisor – Retirees and small-business owners alike could benefit from management advice when it comes to their shrinking retirement or investment funds. 3. Home Staging – Sellers need help gaining appeal to increase the value of their homes now, more than ever.

• Survival, regardless of economic climate, means surrounding yourself with people you can trust. Often these people are your best resource for a completed project, precise and honest bookkeeping (you can’t trim your budget unless you know exactly where your dollars are being spent), or key business partnership.

4. Auto Repair/Maintenance – People skip luxuries, like purchasing new cars in a tough economy. Consider the purchase of a franchise or troubled shop, with potential, at a bargain price.

• Cut back with precision. If you cut too deeply, by completely eliminating advertising, you’re eliminating prospects and decreasing revenue. Instead, think about eliminating extras like coffee, t-shirts and pens, which are comfy for your customer’s but costly to you. Consider changing business lunches to potluck staff meetings, where everyone contributes to a themed planning session.

6. Virtual Assistant – Part-time administrative support via email, can save money for many employers, while helping a recent college graduate gain experience, and compensation, while searching for employment.

• Get cheap help. Think about hiring an intern or two. They’re eager to learn and can gain experience by working with your business at a reduced hourly rate. This allows you to concentrate more on the fundamentals of your business. • Make a deal. Talk to other small businesses and decide to work together on promotional deals or events within your combined businesses.

5. “Green” Home Business – Everyone is turning green. Offer environmentally friendly products to businesses and individuals.

7. Eldercare – Errands and caretaking with an adult care-related business are in demand, despite economic forecasts. 8. Online video production – Commission-based opportunities are available in the area of creators and producers. 9. Cosmetic & Small Indulgence Sales – Lipstick helps put a ‘best face forward’ for a small amount of cash. 10. Buy into a home-based franchise – Childcare and education services are always in demand.

• Barter. Real Estate companies might collaborate well with a home cleaning or carpet repair service, while a tax preparer might trade services for office or ink cartridge supplies.

11. Direct Sales – Everything from vitamins to jewelry sales could be an alternative income for someone who has just been laid off from their job.

• Join a business networking group. This is a great way to learn from other smart business people. Dues and fees for joining are tax deductible for your business and the opportunity should provide promotion leads as well as referrals.

12. Home-based Tutoring Business – Even in a recession, education and learning are high on a parent’s priority list. In addition, adults looking for work may need assistance brushing up on skills in a tightened job market.
