Want To Know What Happy Looks Like? Happiness is…. It looks like a many things for a variety of people in our neighborhoods recently and we’re covering their exultant stories within these pages. June seems to be a month for celebration in the Estrella community. Our cover story reveals a father, whose involvement and commitment to creating a fun and safe environment for children to play sports, ultimately earned his family the trip of a lifetime. Read about the Kamaratas, as they pack their bags in route to London for the 2012 summer Olympic Games. We’re also celebrating new steps with local artist, Debra Goley, as she spreads her wings into the L.A. art scene, by branching out this summer at an artist’s reception where her work will be on display. Check out her Marilyn Monroe mixed media piece, along with an acrylic painting, titled “Ribbon Dance.” Need another reason to put a smile on your face? Local resident business owners, the Risanos, are celebrating the second year anniversary of opening Oasis Bagels on June 29. That’s right, it’s been two years of bringing east coast bagels and signature sandwiches to a favorite local eatery in our neighborhood. These are just a few of the happiness projects cultivating in our community this summer. It might be the first month that we temporarily tuck ourselves indoors as the temperatures begin to soar, but there are plenty of events and activities stirring beneath

the sunlight and the stars in June. Don’t miss the firstever ‘dive-in’ movie night at the Starpointe Waterpark on June 29, and kids, if you want to spend some time with dad, how about some Father’s Day Fishing, compliments of our social committee on June 16? Pay tribute to the lessons of love and life instilled by dad on June 17. Would you have taken the chances without his encouragement? Did he always make sure to point you in a positive direction? Maybe he picked you up both literally and figuratively as you stumbled through life’s obstacles. The smallest gesture of something special on the grill or an afternoon spent looking at old photos together, accompanied by some words of loving reassurance will let dad know how much you care. Most important is that you’re present and involved. Give it a try. You’ll be doubling the happiness by participating in the connection. What does happy look like for you? Is it kicking the soccer ball around with the kids? Walking in the moonlight, or planning a special mini-getaway? It’s a universal theme for summertime and everyone’s invited to dig in. I welcome your story submissions and ideas about happy things you’re involved in this summer. Send me an email at kim@myhometownestrella.com Happy…..it looks a lot like you!

on your doorstep The Kamarata Family Named Torch Bearers in 2012 Summer Olympics The Kamaratas are packing their bags and heading to London, England, escaping the desert heat to carry the flame! London is getting prepared for the 2012 Summer Olympics and so is Estrella’s very own Kamarata family! It’s true, the Kamaratas will be carrying the Olympic torch in the town of Wallingford, Oxforshire in this summer’s host country on Tuesday, July 10, prior to the opening ceremonies, and it’s all being made possible by Dale Kamarata’s employer, The Coca Cola Company. The Olympic torch relay began just last month, on May 18, and is a symbolic Olympic ceremonial event, where people from all walks of life come together in tradition of the Olympic Games. Dale, Minnie, Tyler, Travis and Tessa have a lot of research and planning to do now that school’s let out for summer vacation. Together, they’ll collect their passports and scour the web, seeking places to tour when visiting England. All of this excitement began for the Kamaratas just over a year ago, when Dale, a Supply Chain Manager for Coca Cola, was nominated by a co-worker in a company contest, in search of a Torch Bearer for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The sole requirement for entry nominees was to choose someone who gives back to their community. As the person who brought the community together by founding Estrella Youth Sports in 2006 as a means of providing a safe and fun environment connecting families through sporting activities locally, the Executive Director of EYS and Coca-Cola Company employee was a shoo-in. The chosen family went, unknowingly, through a lengthy paper process for about 12 months, with only Dale being aware of the possibility of being chosen a winner. During the selection process, Dale was not allowed to disclose the secret of entitlement for this extra-special task to anyone, including his own wife and children. Finally, during the family’s spring break trip to San Diego, California in March, Dale announced the great news, after merely hinting to his wife and kids for several months that ‘something big’ was going to be pronounced soon. “They literally jumped for joy,” remembers Dale. “It was so cute, when I told my family that we would carry the torch in London for the Olympics my youngest, Tessa, told me that we were going to make a torch and practice running with it.” When asked what he was most looking forward to, in regards to carrying that torch, “The overwhelming sense of pride for my country, my family and the many faces of Estrella Youth Sports, that I am sure will overtake me the moment the Olympic flame is handed to me,” said the proud father

pag e 4 : my h o m e tow n

and Estrella community enthusiast. “I am looking forward to representing my country, my family, Coca-Cola Refreshments and the families of Estrella Youth Sports,” he added. Community involvement has definitely always been a part of Dale’s life. As he reflected on his purpose for being continually committed to community, he said, “I look back at all my parents did in the community as I was growing up and I feel as though I am following in their footsteps. I am inspired to ‘pay it forward’ like my parents did in an effort to inspire today’s children to become actively involved in the community through youth sports.” Dale gives the following piece of advice to others seeking ways to make a positive difference: “Find something you and your family are truly passionate about, put yourself out there and just do it! So many people ask me how I find the time. I explain when it is based on passion and love, finding time is not an obstacle.” In addition, the 2012 Summer Olympic Torch-Bearer recapped, “This honor has nothing to do with me. It is possible because of the conduit of people involved in EYS, parents, kids, volunteers, even grandparents. It is only with their support and dedication that I am able to receive this incredible opportunity.” So, as the Kamarata family suit themselves in the white jogging-suits embellished with gold and recall the values that have provided them this opportunity, they will become part of an outstanding tradition and an experience they’re not likely to soon forget. History of the Torch-Bearer: In Greek mythology, the original “torch-bearer” was Prometheus, the Titan who took fire from the gods to give it to humankind. Fire was thought to be a tiny spark of the sun which brought outstanding physical appearance to mankind. In early teachings, the act of ‘carrying the torch’ is symbolic of man’s awareness of his own ‘divine spark.’ Among the many families, businesses and volunteers that the Kamaratas would like to thank: Bill Hinzmann and family: Co-Director of EYS Baseball, Jeremie Waterfield and family: Co-Director of EYS Baseball, Mike Dooley and family: EYS Baseball volunteer, Mike Cross and Family: EYS Baseball volunteer, duVal Goley and family: Director of EYS Soccer, Lance Kastel and family: Director of EYS Flag Football, Ken and Donna Beuthin: Board Members and all around incredible volunteers, Joe and Amie Bruyer and family: Board Members and all around incredible volunteers, Dr. Andy Rogers, Mr. Dave Bogart, Mrs. Sharon Marine and the Liberty School District, Mr. Derek Fahleson and the Buckeye Union School District, Pastor Mike Perkinson and Estrella Mountain Community Church, Scott Palmateer: EYS Sponsor (owner of Tropical Smoothie Café in Goodyear), Bernard Goodman: EYS Sponsor (owner of Estrella Family Medical), Karina Linville: EYS Sponsor (Sales Manager of Sagicor Life Insurance Company), Dr. Joel Rolfe: EYS Sponsor (Mountain Ranch Dentistry), Matt Nicodemus: EYS Sponsor (Consider it Finished Painting), Chris O’Connell: EYS Sponsor (Executive Director of Desert Valley Pediatrics), Lee Harding: EYS Sponsor (Owner of Kidz Connextion Dental Centers).

on your doorstep Oasis Bagels Is Celebrating Second-Year Anniversary Oasis Bagels- “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” As the door swung open for the first time on that hot summer day, June 29, 2010, the immediate goal seemed to be met, a customer arrived! Carol Risano recalls being hopeful that the absence of air conditioning wouldn’t be too noticeable and that the 95 degree in-door temperature was sufficient, as she banged on the non-working credit card machine. And who needed two working cash registers? With a few quick-fixes and an additional air-conditioning unit, plus a wonderful community-employed staff (several who have been with the team, since they opened), the staff, together, quickly grew into a working family. Besides the east-coast handmade bagels, Oasis has attempted to cater to the needs of the community by adding items such as Gluten Free bagels, lowcarb wraps, mixed salad greens, steel cut oatmeal and gelato. It’s hard to believe that June 29 marks the two-year anniversary of the Grand Opening of Oasis Bagels in the Estrella Ranch Marketplace. The Risano family has made their dream business come true! Oasis Bagels has become a household name and neighborhood destination, but not without some obstacles that tested those dreams, some of them hilarious, from opening day and throughout the “new-business-survival-of-the-finest” inaugural year.

Estrella Book Club Summer Book Series Join the Estrella Book Club, as they discuss a variety of good reads this summer. The group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 10am at the Starpointe Residents Club. The summer line up book series: June - Benjamin Franklin: An American Life by Walter Isaacson This bestselling novel by Walter Isaacson helps bring Franklin to life as you read about the founding father who winks at us. An ambitious urban entrepreneur who rose up the social ladder, from an aproned shopkeeper to dining with kings helped define both his own time and ours. July -A Change in Altitude by Anita Shreve Set in Kenya, the novel is more than a cliffhanger: you could call it a glacier-dropper. August - Sacre` Bleu: A Comedy of Art by Christopher Moore Sacre` Bleu, the immortal Moore takes on the Great French Masters. This part mystery, part history, part love story and wholly hilarious journey, takes you elsewhere as a young baker-painter joins the dapper Henri Toulouse-Lautrec on a quest to unravel the mystery behind the supposed “suicide” of Vincent van Gogh.

pag e 6 : my h om e tow n

What started as a simple idea to bring a touch of authenticity from New Jersey has grown into a real-life dream, with the help and support of the Risano family, staff, friends and the community. If there’s a place similar to the local pub “Cheers” in Boston, where everybody knows your name, it’s Oasis Bagels in Estrella. In celebration of this special second-year anniversary, the Risano family invites you to participate in a special drawing on anniversary day for one dozen free bagels and another for a free lunch combo. Drop by and put your entry in for the drawing. You need not be present to win.

Estrella Youth Sports Announces New Playing Fields New playing fields are currently underway in our community. Watch for ‘growing grass’ and field construction near Estrella Mountain Church this summer. The new fields are the result of a generous donation to Estrella Youth Sports from Jason and Shelley Vargas. Estrella Youth Sports and the Vargas families are in the process of building two multi-purpose fields and a basketball court for children ranging from the age of 2 ½ years old to second grade. Jason Vargas is a professional baseball player for the Seattle Mariners. He, along with his wife, Shelley, and their two beautiful children – Joshua and Elizabeth – call Estrella home. Jason and Shelley have been a huge part of the fabric of EYS for many years and we are truly blessed to have them in our community. Estrella Youth Sports is a nonprofit organization, provides more than 1,000 children between the ages 3 years to 13 years the opportunity to develop active lifestyles. EYS creates a safe and fun environment for families by connecting them through youth baseball, basketball, and soccer and flag football programs.

HOA Independence Day Parade - Saturday, June 30 Get out your flags, crepe paper, garland, and anything red, white, & blue! It’s time to decorate your strollers, wagons, and yourselves! We will celebrate Independence Day as we ride bikes, golf carts, or walk in Estella’s Annual Star Spangled Independence Day Parade! Gather your neighbors, local club or group and your friends, and create a mini float to show your pride! Coaches, this could be a great team-building event for your team. Have them work together to create a float and then display it at the parade. This year we are shaking things up a little and holding Estrella’s Annual Star Spangled Independence Day Parade in the evening to avoid the heat of the day. We will be meeting at the Eastside parking lot of Starpointe Saturday, June 30 at 6:30pm. The Goodyear Fire Department (barring no emergencies) has been invited to display a fire truck and will have personnel on site to showcase all the bells and whistles to these high tech machines. The Goodyear Police department will also be displaying a number of patrol vehicles at this event. The flag will be presented by local Boy Scout Troop Pack 360. Even though the parade is being held in the evening, it will still be hot outside so dress appropriately. Water, lemonade, and otter pops will be provided to parade participants. After the short parade passes by the information center and past a portion of North Lake, we will cool off at the Star Splash Dive in while watching the Muppet Movie! Residents participating in the parade will receive free entrance into the poolside movie. If you are not able to participate in the parade but still want to enjoy the Star Splash Dive In, you can purchase your tickets at the Starpointe Front Desk for $2 for adults and $1 for children age 3-16. The pool will close Saturday, June 30 at 6:30pm, and every-

pag e 10 : my h om e tow n

one will be asked to exit the pool area in order to prepare for the movie. The pool will reopen at 7:30pm to event ticket holders and parade participants only. There will be games and prizes to be won before the event so be ready to have some pool bash fun. Games will include the popular Watermelon Relay, Splash Dancing and a Sponge Toss. Although coolers are not allowed in the pool area during the movie, water, sodas, snacks, and candy will be available for purchase by the volunteers of the Estrella Social Committee and the Estrella Teen Club. Log on to www.LifeinEstrella.com to get more information, or to see pictures of last year’s parade. Start constructing those mini floats and don’t miss out on the fun!

HOA bulletin board Palm trees

In April 2012, the Design Review Committee unanimously approved additions to the plant list for the Desert Vista Landscape Character Zone to include palm trees for backyard landscape only. The varieties of palm trees that are now allowed are Mexican Fan Palms (Washingtomnia robusta), Queen Palms (Syagrus romanzoffiana), Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis), Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera), and California Fan Palm (Washingtontonia filifera). Before making any additions or changes to your backyard, you are required to fill out a modification application for approval. Applications can be found online at lifeinestrella.com. Upcoming ECA Board of Directors Election The Estrella Community Association (ECA) will be electing two residents to the Board of Directors. The Nominating Committee is seeking residents wishing to serve on the Board. Please consider dedicating your time and experience as a member of the Association. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please complete the application online at www. lifeinestrella.com located in the Document Library or stop by the Community Services Office. The Nominating Committee will present a slate of candidates to the Board on June 28, 2012. The election will occur in September with results announced at the Annual Meeting. Serving as a Board Member is a unique and rewarding way to serve your community.

Can We Work Out A Payment Plan? Our office is receiving an increasing number of calls and walk in traffic from owners who are delinquent in their Estrella assessment payments. Many have stories of losing their jobs or having their hours cut back. Paying your bills on time may not be as easy as it was in the past. Initial late notices are sent as soon as your account is delinquent. Residents’ access to the community amenities, including Starpointe Resident Club, is suspended if your account is more than 30 days delinquent. Some owners wait until they receive notice that a lien has been placed on their property by the Association or intent to do the same. Several months have passed before their account reaches this point, though they do not make the attempt to contact our office sooner. Those of you who are delinquent in your payments need to know that the sooner you contact us,

the better it will be for everyone. Maybe you don’t really have a plan to pay back what you owe. You know that it will be difficult to pay your quarterly dues all at once. Anyone who is delinquent in their assessments is encouraged to contact either the CCMC Corporate office at 480-921-7500 or the Estrella Site Office at 623-386-1112 as soon as possible. Please make an appointment to come in and discuss your account or at least make a phone call to get the ball rolling. Payments can be made on line at www.ccmcnet.com. This is in no way an amnesty program. If you owe the money, we expect you to pay. It is easier to make payment arrangements and keep late/collection fees from being charged to your account. We look forward to hearing from those of you, sooner than later, who need a little help.

Did You Know? Did you know that community associations have their own set of laws and regulations? Did you know that these laws and regulations are not the same as the ones that apply to municipalities? We know this can be confusing. The following facts about Arizona law should help clarify the issue. Fact #1: The Planned Community Statute 33-1804 – Open Meetings - states that “After the period of Declarant control an agenda shall be available to owners attending the meeting. “ In other words, agendas will be available to participants when they arrive for the meeting. This takes into consideration that board and committee members are typically volunteers with busy lives, who cannot always prepare their agendas in advance. Your management team wants homeowners to be informed and involved in community life. For this reason, we typically distribute a special notice to homeowners when important subjects – outside the realm of ordinary business – will be discussed. This notice may or may not include the complete meeting agenda. When we do receive agendas in advance, they are posted on www.lifeinestrella.com . Fact #2: The Planned Community Statute 33 – Open Meetings – also addresses provisions for providing pag e 12 : my h o m e tow n

advanced notice of meetings. “After the period of Declarant control, notice to members of meeting of the board of directors shall be given at least forty –eight hours in advance of the meeting.” This provision also pertains to committee meeting. Again, our committee and board meetings occur on set dates each month. Those dates are posted in the calendar inside our community newspaper. Fact #3: The state statutes that apply to homeowner associations are different from the state statutes that apply to public municipalities such as cities, counties and states. This includes those pertaining to providing agendas and meeting notices. Remember, Estrella Associations are all private, not for-profit corporations. They are not government entities. We hope this helps to clarify this complicated matter. If you have any questions, or need further clarification, please contact your community manager, Lisa Lundskow at llundskow@ccmcnet. com, or operations manager, Debbie Harper at dharper@ccmcnet.com .

people in your neighborhood Dr. Fred “Skydog” Emerling and his wife, Frances Lippmann A telephone call to Dr. “Skydog” was returned to me with enthusiasm earlier this spring. When I asked him what made this particular day special, he quickly responded that his biking adventure into the Estrella mountain trails had revealed a beautiful Saguaro cactus blossom, the fact that the Phoenix Coyotes had just won “possibly the best hockey game of all time,” defeating the Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs and the anticipation of window coverings arriving soon, for his new Canta Mia home, excited him! And his enthusiasm excited me. I quickly noted that the Emerling interview would reveal a wealth of interesting information. Truth be told, I learned quite a lot of information that day, about a variety of subjects from two outstanding, wise, friendly individuals who have named their new residence “Casa Saguaro” in the Canta Mia community. The couple’s uniqueness spills right over into “Casa Saguaro” which includes a room called the “Dogz Den,” wall art, made of the official University of Alabama and University of Arizona symbols (Fred received his Ph.D. in School Psychology from the U of A) and 15 different brightly colored walls, which Fred says make his home look like a Mexican restaurant, radiating a vibrant energy that seems to bring it to life. Their love of animals, particularly dogs, is where the latter part of Fred’s nickname derives. The beginning ‘sky’, you guessed it, skydiving – he revealed the tattoo as proof of the experience. Visiting with Dr. Fred “Skydog” and his wife Frances was like opening the home page of my computer and tapping into a few quick searches of

news, weather, history and geography. These two have been everywhere, yet chosen this community for its optimal dry, warm weather, which is surrounded by mountains and filled with clean air. A place to kayak, mountain bike and road bike, I’m told, sealed the deal for their newest home in Arizona. Both new residents are from Fresno, California, where Frances works in admissions, as the Accounts Manager in the Registrar office and Fred is employed as a Counselor at Fresno City College, where the pair met. In just the past year, Fred (enjoying semi-retirement) has traveled to 13 countries and nine states, Frances following along when she can get time away from her current full-time position. Both just returned from an African safari, bringing home hundreds of photographs and a wealth of knowledge back with them. Next on the travel agenda, after interior decorating and landscape projects at the new home are complete, is a tour of the Civil War Battle Sites this summer, along with a bike tour from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh. Greece, Singapore, London, Israel and China are among other destinations of these world travelers. Yet both quickly chose Western North America as their favorite place to inhabit because of the freedom, clean air, drinkable water, paved roadways, opportunity and lifestyle offered right here. And that appreciation is just one of the qualities that make Fred and Frances great people to know in this community.

Launch Your “Summertime” Investment Strategy Now that summer is officially here, you may be looking forward to vacations, barbecues, ballgames and other events of the season. But even while you’re engaged in these activities, you can’t forget about other aspects of your life – such as your plans to achieve your long-term financial goals. However, your summer activities can actually provide you with some valuable lessons on managing your investment strategy. Here are a few possibilities: • Plan your trip. If you’re taking a long road trip this summer, you’ll need to choose your vehicle, map out your route, determine how far you want to go each day and be quite certain of your destination. And, essentially, the same is true for your investment strategy. You need to choose the right investment vehicles, familiarize yourself with your ultimate goals (such as a comfortable retirement) and chart your progress along the way. • Try to avoid getting burned. If you’re going to spend a lot of time outdoors this summer, you may need to apply some sunscreen. But you don’t have to be exposed to the sun to get “burned” – it can happen in the investment world, too. However, you can help prevent this

from happening. How? By building a diversified portfolio. If most of your money is tied up in just one type of investment, and that asset class falls victim to a downturn, your portfolio could take big hit. But while some investments are moving down, others may be moving up, so it makes sense to spread your money among a range of vehicles appropriate for your risk tolerance, investment goals and time horizon. Of course, diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee a profit or protect against loss, but it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. • Keep yourself “hydrated.” When you’re outside on hot days, you can lose a lot of fluids, so you need to drink plenty of liquids to remain hydrated. As an investor, you also need a reasonable amount of liquidity. In the severe market downturn of 2008 and early 2009, many investors found they had insufficient amounts of the type of liquid investments – cash and cash equivalents – that held up better than other, more aggressive vehicles. Furthermore, if you are relatively illiquid, you may have to dip into your longer-term investments to pay for short-term emergency needs. Try to always keep an adequate level of liquidity in your holdings.

Safeguard Your Kids from Prescription Drug Abuse “In 2009, 16 million Americans age 12 and older had taken a prescription pain reliever, tranquilizer, stimulant, or sedative for nonmedical purposes at least once in the year prior to being surveyed. Source: National Survey on Drug Use and Health (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration Web Site). The NIDA-funded 2010 Monitoring the Future Study showed that 2.7% of 8th graders, 7.7% of 10th graders, and 8.0% of 12th graders had abused Vicodin and 2.1% of 8th graders, 4.6% of 10th graders, and 5.1% of 12th graders had abused OxyContin for nonmedical purposes at least once in the year prior to being surveyed.” Source: Monitoring the Future (University of Michigan Web Site). Prescription drug abuse is simply defined as any use of a prescription by someone other than the person for whom the drug was prescribed. The good news is that most 12th graders are not using any of these drugs. The bad news: if they wanted to use a prescription drug or an over-thecounter drug, it would be incredibly easy to do. At the top of the list of drugs being abused today are Opioids (pain pills: OxyContin, Vicodin, codeine, morphine,etc.). Number two are Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants (given for sleep or anxiety problems), with number three being Stimulants (for ADHD, narcolepsy, or obesity). Though all of these carry risks for our kids, the popular opiates can quickly lead down a frightening road to heroin addiction. NIDA also reports that Rx drugs have become the drug of choice for 8th graders who chose to experiment with substances. What makes opioids so attractive to young people is the misperception that anything given by a doctor is safe. They are also accessible due to the widespread adult use of pain relievers – such that a curious youth can find it in their parents’ medicine cabinet, a grandparent’s, or a friend’s house. Kids who wouldn’t dare go looking for marijuana or cocaine will risk looking through the medicine cabinets of friends or family. The “high” is also deceptively manageable – at first. In early use, a teen can experiment with the pills without drawing attention. No tell-tale odors on his breath, no stumbling around or giggle fits or “munchies” will give it away. One young man I know who is in recovery for heroin addiction (but started with pain pills) said, “The thing I liked most about it was that I could function just fine. I could go to work, talk to people, and seem totally fine…for a while.” Nobody knew until he began disappearing several times daily to use, spending increasing amounts of time and money on his new love. Doctors prescribe pain medication for temporary relief from significant pain. They are effective in imitating, and boosting the natural brain chemistry that relieves pain and alerts us to pleasure. The surge (or “rush”) of dopamine that is released in the brain by drug use activates the neurons. The drug use is repeated because our brain is designed to tell us “do it again” when we enjoy something like a meal, a compliment, a funny joke, or a gesture of love. For a while brain cells can still send messages and transmit dopamine. As addiction happens, the brain eventually shuts some of these cells down in order to keep them from dying. This is why the habitual user “needs” higher quantities of the drug to get that same “rush” effect he felt the first time. Our amazing brains are designed for survival! When the user tries to quit the drug, his brain is left to fend for itself with some of those neurons still shut off. The brain’s natural pain relievers are no longer working. After all, why should they respond to pain, when the drug was doing all the work? Liken it to asking your son, who has

a broken leg, to mow the lawn with a Troy-bilt push-mower after years of watching Dad do it with the riding Husqvarna. Quitting is painful, and for most users, physically intolerable. Addiction, at that point, is not a choice – it has become a physical struggle. When the brain is “hi-jacked” by outside chemicals, willpower alone won’t be enough to recover. Treatment can work, though it takes time for the brain to restore itself to anything near its earlier state of functioning. Even then, recovering addicts must be attentive to their environment to prevent relapse. Lethal overdose is more common after a period of sobriety, because users take in high amounts without realizing their body had begun to heal and could no longer survive earlier levels of toxicity. I recently asked a recovering friend, “What do you want parents to know about pain pills?” His responses: “If a doctor prescribes pain medication, research it. If there is any history of addiction (including alcoholism) in your family, tell your doctor. Say, ‘Please don’t give me any opiates.’ Ask for non-narcotics…there are many alternatives available. “I don’t care how smart or athletic or well-behaved your kids are, if there are pain medicines in your house, keep those things away from them. Lock them up, literally. Padlock, safe…don’t even give them a chance. “Build a good relationship with your kids so they won’t hesitate to talk to you if they need help.” If an adult has a problem with medication, “You have to be humble…admit that it’s a problem so someone can help you.” To finish on a hopeful note, here are a few ideas for naturally activating the brain’s pleasure center this summer: 1. Ride a water slide.

9. Play Frisbee.

2. Listen to upbeat music.

10. Revive an old piece of furniture.

3. Take a friend out for dessert. 4. Have a little dark chocolate. 5. Play volleyball at the park.

11. Teach a kid to catch. 12. Let a kid teach you to roller skate. Or play a game he likes.

6. Brush a horse. Or a dog.

13. Download a silly song, and sing along.

7. Bake some bread and don’t apologize for the carbs.

14. Go fishing.

8. Smile. Then go smile at someone else. Repeat.

15. Buy someone flowers.

Tips for Summer Home Maintenance

Taking Care of Business this summer, includes making sure our kids are safe and protected, along with maintaining our homes and financial investments. Local Estrella businesses provided the following tips for summer maintenance.

Looking For Ways to Make Your Home Look New?

I’m sure you’ve heard it once or twice, “Estrella has hard waterâ€?. Well it’s true and the result of our hard water causes our home’s plumbing to become corroded, weak and or damaged. A common problem area is the supply hose that’s typically located at the back of your toilet. This hose and the supply valve that connects it to your home’s plumbing can deteriorate and begin to leak. Next time you’re in your bathroom, take a second to look behind your toilet to ensure you don’t have a leak. If you have a leak, you’ll need to replace the supply hose or valve or maybe more. Here’s a quick and easy test to do – reach behind your toilet and give your shut off valve a few turns, it should turn easily. If it will not turn easily, you should replace it before you have an emergency on your hands! If you are uncertain what needs to be replaced, simply call Handyman Xtreme @ 602-773-1973, they’re happy to help.

Check out your grout! Many homeowners enjoy the versatility and ease of tile floors, however step back, look down – is your grout dingy? Food stains and everyday foot traffic (especially if your children ‘forget’ to remove their shoes at the door) cause the grout to become dirty, dingy and discolored. It’s time for that dingy tile grout to go! For many stains, simple ingredients such as vinegar and baking soda can do the trick. A toothbrush, with a little elbow grease, can bring your grout back to life; however, you may need to use some special solvents to restore your grout’s beauty. As you clean, you may uncover areas that need patching. Depending on the size of the patch needed, you can repair it yourself or give the professionals at Handyman Xtreme a call for help.

business spotlight Desert Interiors by Jill “I have any eye to make suggestions on how to get the most dramatic change in a home, within budget. My favorite small changes are adding knobs/pulls to cabinetry, always having high quality sheets and a down filled duvet on a bed (makes any room feel more like a high end hotel). Ikea has the best down insert for 29.99 Queen size!!”…. Jill Bartee, Design Specialist at Desert Interiors by Jill. Whether you’re trying to obtain some simple style updates for the semi-tired living spaces in your existing home, or confused with decorating provisions for a newly purchased house, obtaining a refreshing makeover can be easy and enjoyable with help from local design specialist, Jill Bartee. Maybe you’ve come across the smoking deal of a foreclosure purchase, but afraid of the interior which currently resembles bare-boned skeletal white walls and ‘mediocre beige’ flooring. Let’s face it, it’s tough to get excited about calling the unflattering your home. Jill Bartee of Desert Interiors by Jill brings her experience and creativity to the aid of homeowners needing assistance with making decisions to suit their needs, based on their individual resources. “I work within the client’s budget to get the maximum result. It’s not about the money spent. It’s about making sure my clients feel like they got more for their dollar by using my services than they would have by struggling with trial and error purchases on their own. I believe I’ve proven this true in all cases,” says the local design specialist. “Decorating allows me to be creative and fulfill my passion of putting things together by building on one detail at a time. I can make suggestions

on what to do or not to make the most of what you have, what to change or not change,” says the owner of Desert Interiors by Jill. Jill’s design services stem from a lengthy passion of hers to help others create personal, welcoming places to relax and call home. She grew up touring model homes with her mom, who was in the real estate business for 18 years. “I love helping people select things that will make their homes personal and a wonderful place to relax. I also worked as a designer for new homes for six years and loved it! I love seeing a home all come together,” she added. Jill has been an Estrella resident since early 2007, following her parents to Arizona, after a lifetime in Northern California. A series of life-changing events in Goodyear, which included the birth of her son and losing her grandmother and father made the adjustment period tricky. One of the things she missed about her life in California was her work in the home design business. She decided it was time to nourish her appetite for helping people personalize their homes and joined the team at Elite Blinds and Shutters, enabling her to readily access window coverings into her personal design business. She has found Goodyear, specifically Estrella, a wonderful place to make new friendships and establish that business. You can take a look at some of Jill’s projects, read testimonials and learn more about Jill’s business by visiting her website at www.desertinteriorsbyjill.com or by contacting her directly at 623.986.0320 or desertinteriorsbyjill@hotmail.com for a complimentary consultation.

JUNE 2012 MARACAY HOMES

BUILDER OF THE MONTH

Purchasing a home is often the biggest financial decision people make in life, and today’s buyer is educated and hungry for more choices and value pricing. Maracay Homes, builder of more than 7,000 homes in Arizona over the last 20 years, kept this in mind when developing Medina at Estrella. Starting from the mid $170,000s, the Medina neighborhood presents six Flex Design® floor plans offering an assortment of interchangeable features. Buyers can personalize their homes with amenities tailored to their specific needs. New owners can choose from alternate kitchen designs, a super master bedroom suite, expanded closets and a fireplace entertainment center. If a den is preferred instead of a spare bedroom, it’s no problem! For the eco-minded homebuyer, every new Medina at Estrella home includes LivingSmart® solutions. These green-friendly features offer energy conservation options such as: landscape sprinklers that shut off in the rain, motion sensor lighting fixtures and low flow faucets and bathroom fixtures to reduce water usage. All Maracay Homes also include solar-ready components that meet Arizona utility specifications. Floor plans range from 1,818 to 2,996 square feet with three to five bedrooms and up to 3.5 baths. Three-car garages are standard in most plans. For additional information, please contact Phil Benson at Maracay Homes’ Medina at Estrella sales office (623) 327-2341 or visit www.estrella.com

STUDENTS RECEIVE HISTORY LESSON AT ESTRELLA’S HISTORY MUSEUM The Estrella Mountain Elementary School’s fourth grade students ended the school year with a field trip to the Estrella Information Center last month. The Information Center is home to The Estrella Museum, chronicling history for the City of Goodyear, the surrounding Sonoran Desert Valley and Estrella. The history museum actually serves as an incubator for the Sonoran Desert Valley Historical Society as an extension of the existing Three Rivers Historical Society. Students walked from the school to the center with their teachers and parent chaperones. Everyone had a great time exploring the exhibits which include history panels depicting life from the early days with the arrival of the Hohokam Native Americans to present day, unique artifacts from the area and a topography table showing the layout of the Estrella community. The trip was not all fun and games, the students studied the exhibits to find answers to fill-in-the-blank questionnaires. The fourth graders learn about Arizona history throughout the school year, and the Information Center excursion was a great way to bring history closer to home by providing an opportunity for them to learn more about their very own city and community. For your own history lesson, you are welcome to explore the museum at the Estrella Information Center too! Hours of Operation: Thursday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. If you are interested in a private group tour give us a call at (623) 386-1000.

RESIDENTS STAY COOL AT ESTRELLA Arizona summers can be intense, but Estrella residents have plenty of options to beat the heat and enjoy a variety of water activities…right here in the desert! With two lakes spanning more than 72 acres, life seems to happen lakeside with the fun and fitness provided by the North and South Lakes at Estrella. Both lakes are stocked for catch and release fishing with equipment available from the Yacht Club at North Lake. Be sure to check the Life In Estrella website for a schedule of the many fun community events held at North Lake, such as: Movie Night and the Concert in the Park series at the Lakeside Amphitheater. South Lake is a great place to watch the sunset, or hit the beach for a barbecue and game of volleyball at the park. For boating adventures, head to the Estrella Yacht Club for complimentary rentals of kayaks, canoes, paddle boats and sail boats...yes, sail boats! Unlike any other community in the greater Phoenix area, Estrella offers residents the unique experience of sailing in the desert. The Yacht Club even hosts sailing lessons the second Saturday of each month covering topics that include: basic seamanship, boat care, wind concept and more. A boating safety class is available at Starpointe on the third Saturday of each month for beginners.

If lounging poolside is more your style, head over to Starpointe and enjoy the 225,000 gallon pool and StarSplash Water Park. The park features two large waterslides and a kid’s splash pad – complete with a water dump bucket and two small slides. Those looking for a less playful swim can take advantage of the 25-foot lap pool. Aqua-Tots are once again holding swim lessons at Estrella for children six months and older. Classes will run through September. Registration and more information is available at Starpointe.
