The Little Guy Allow me to introduce you to an outstanding family in our community this month. Even if you merely skim through other pages of this issue, I would encourage you to take a few moments to read our Meet Your Neighbor piece this month. It features a unique family living under exceptional circumstances. Writing about this family helped me take inventory of many of the more minor joys that make up the moments in my own life. It also helped me recall a time, not so long ago, when my children were small and how I dreamed and wondered about their growing processes and how somehow time went forward, fast. And in the midst of all the current signs of troubling times – the rising gasoline prices and the sinking housing market, I may have gotten temporarily lost and forgotten to take inventory of the little things. And speaking of little things, it’s almost itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny swimsuit time. We’re providing tips this month on some minor procedures that will help you feel more confident for the summer season from Déjà vu Med Spa. You’ll laugh a little as you sail through parenthood with Andy Ragone’s parenting article and, because it’s the best time of the year to be out on the course, we’re sure golfers will enjoy knowing that the Golf Club of Estrella

has been named one of the country’s best courses for play and it is situated within our own backyards. I suppose it comes each year with spring – my annual need to begin a “small” project before the summer heat sets in. This year, I’m tackling an indoor paint project. My home office will soon be adorned by the brilliance of a colorful new wall. These type of pick-me-up projects are ways that I keep my environment feeling fresh, so that I can feel creative. Please share with me some of the ways that you’re celebrating spring. Drop me a line at kim@myhometownestrella. com. Is there a feature story “budding” within your backyard or your neighborhood? I find it true that many “big” things are the result of bits and pieces of little things. Seemingly trivial information that forms a larger news story – small groups gathering together to take minor steps to help build a successful business, or the few dollars in cash to support a car wash that brings monetary value for local teen youth planning activities in the community – makes a BIG difference. It could be the smallest gesture that produces the most fulfilling results, and for that, and the ‘little guy,’ I am grateful.

on your doorstep Golf Club of Estrella…Voted One of the Best Courses You Can Play Troon Golf, the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing is pleased to announce that the Golf Club of Estrella has been named to the list of “Golfweeks’Best” courses in the state of Arizona for 2012. What features helped earn a “best course” rating for the Estrella Golf Club? General Manager, Tom Cortabitarte, said, “The rating of the state-by-state list is the product of extensive road tripping by Golfweek’s team of 700 raters. The number of courses in each state can vary based on course supply, population and level of play; this also includes daily-fee layouts and courses accessible via resorts. They’re rating the course conditions, course playability, overall amenities, service and staff performance.” The Golf Club of Estrella, located in the master-plan community of Estrella at 11800 S. Golf Club Drive in Goodyear, is an 18-hole facility designed by Jack Nicklaus II and opened in 1999. This spectacular desert course was ranked #18 of The Best Courses You Can Play in the state. The Golf Club of Estrella also offers a wide range of amenities and is a destination for corporate outings, charity tournaments and even a secluded paradise for wedding ceremonies. Among the many amenities at the golf club is the Estrella Golf Shop, which combines the finest golf apparel, equipment and accessories. You’ll find fashion names like Adidas, Callaway, Under Armour Golf and Greg Norman collections, to name a few. Ladies, you’ll appreciate the variety of fashion including Ashworth, Cutter & Buck, Nike, Under Armour Golf, and Sport Haley to choose from to fashion yourselves for the course. FootJoy and Nike golf shoes are also available at the golf shop. If you’ve got a favorite fashion item and can’t find it in the shop, special ordering is available. Golf Club of Estrella offers the latest in golf equipment with the newest clubs from Callaway, Titleist and PING. Not exactly sure what to get the golfer

on your list? Gift Cards are available for merchandise, rounds of golf or golf instruction. And if you’re looking for a place to unwind and satisfy your palate after a round of golf or on a Friday evening for happy hour, The Player’s Grill & Patio serves a wonderful menu beneath an Arizona sunset in a Southwest atmosphere. The Player’s Grill & Patio is currently open seven days per week from sunrise to sunset. If sipping your favorite cocktail while taking in a stunning view of our famous Arizona sunsets sounds enticing, we invite you to spend an evening on the Player’s Grill Patio. The patio, drenched in lit trees and surrounding fire pits is the perfect ending to a great day of golf, hectic day at the office and the place to share good times with family and friends. Did we mention that the Player’s Grill & Patio holds the only full liquor license in the Estrella community? For April, The Golf Club of Estrella is offering the following resident specials: $55 $110 $45

Single Player 2 for 1 Special Twilight Rate after 2pm

It’s no wonder that the Golf Club of Estrella gets a spectacular rating from GolfWeek magazine, and community members of Estrella. It’s a great place to play a round, relax with friends or celebrate special occasions. “The outstanding playing conditions on our course are a direct result of the efforts of Paul Schieffer, our Golf Course Superintendent, and his team. He’s a hands-on leader and sets a great example for all to follow,” said Cortabitarte. The Golf Club of Estrella, 623 386-2600, www.estrellagolf.com

on your doorstep Centennial Trail Ground Breaking At Estrella Mountain Regional Park On the chilly morning of Arizona’s Centennial birthday, three outstanding West Valley agencies united for a Centennial trail groundbreaking ceremony at the Estrella Mountain Regional Park’s Nature Center. The purpose of the ceremony was the introduction of a new trail, The Centennial Trail, which will meander at the base of the Estrella Mountains, within the Estrella Mountain Regional Park, offering cultural enhancement and education for children of all ages. The agencies in partnership with the development of the Centennial Trail are the Three Rivers Historical Society, the West Valley Arts Council and the Maricopa County Department of Parks and Recreation. Representatives and dignitaries including the Mayor of Goodyear, Georgia Lord; the Mayor of Litchfiled Park, Thomas Schoaf; Supervisor of District 5, Mary Rose Wilcox and Chairman of the Three Rivers Historical Society, Ed Buonvecchio were among the speakers at the kickoff event. Mr. Buonvecchio, who is credited with the idea of creating this educational access to nature, spoke about the partnerships created within the Southwest Valley to create a trail with artistic features, beautiful scenery and interactive educational nodes for everyone to enjoy in an “outdoor museum” setting, among the backdrop of the Estrella Mountains. The Centennial trail is a half-mile, unique educational and historic track that is being constructed to enhance the culture of the area for residents and tourists who wish to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. It is anticipated

that the first phase of the trail, which includes construction of the path and completion of a minimum of five nodes, will be completed at the end of December 2012. More about the sponsoring organizations: The Three Rivers Historical Society, named for the three rivers that converge in the area, the Salt, The Agua Fria, and the Gila, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and nurturing cultural history and artifacts of the southwest valley. The Historical Society serves the communities of Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park and Tolleson. The Maricopa County Regional Parks offer visitors the best of the Sonoran Desert, with approximately 120,000 acres of hiking and barrierfree trails, including horseback riding trails. Maricopa County is home to one of the largest regional park systems in the U.S. The West Valley Arts Council encourages audiences and education of the arts throughout the West Valley. It serves thirteen cities in the greater Phoenix metropolitan region. The West Valley Arts Council continues to create “high quality of life” for West Valley residents through its programming, events and advocacy. The Centennial Trail is located within the Estrella Mountain Regional Park, 14805 W. Vineyard Ave., Goodyear, AZ. For more information call 623-932-3811.

Community Tree Replacement Project 2012 The EJC Landscape Committee, CCMC Management Team and Four Peaks, our landscape contractor, have gotten a jump start on Earth Day 2012. CCMC and Four Peaks distributed and planted 534 trees in December of 2011. CCMC and the Landscape Committee formulated a methodology for the tree planting to be accomplished in March of 2012 and the fourth quarter of 2012. The Landscape Committee feels that the Community will benefit from understanding what the methodology is. The March (approximately 260 trees) and fourth quarter (approximately 260 trees) planting will continue to enhance major arterial roadways and begin to address neighborhoods. The arterial planting will benefit current homeowners, new residents, perspective homeowners and guests. The trees to be planted are; Palo Verde, Mesquite, and Ironwood. This limited palette is necessary due to adverse soil and water conditions on Estrella Mt. Ranch. The Committee traveled the major arterial roads in order to identify approximate placement of these trees. They have identified where the new trees should be planted to fill in and enhance spacing between trees. They have taken great care to consider mature plant canopy and surrounding plant species. CCMC Management and the Landscape Committee will also kick off their spring plant (shrub) replacement project. Their objective for the spring planting would be to further enhance the marquee entrance areas. There are two planting cycles planned for this year – one for the first quarter and one for the fourth quarter. The committee has a $10,000 budget for each cycle for a total of $20,000 for the year. The Landscape Committee, CCMC and Four Peaks hope that you will enjoy the ongoing plant additions to our community. The greening of Estrella, within our physical limitations, is our highest priority which the residents of Estrella also indicated in the community survey from last year as a high priority.

The Three Rivers Historical Society is seeking volunteers who would like to commit murderous treachery on the invasive Salt Cedar at the Centennial Trail site at the Estrella Mountain Regional Park Visitor Center. They have started to clear the site, but need your help. Volunteers are needed every Saturday, until the path is created where the trail will be located. The volunteers will begin by gathering the limbs of dead and dying salt cedar. Posse members with saws and lopers can cut off small diameter trees. Rakers will be needed to rake small branches and organic matter to the center of clearing, revealing bare ground. Volunteers interested should bring protective equipment such as gloves, sunscreen, hat, water bottle (water and toilet facilities are located close to the visitor center), dusk mask and choice of tools such as shovel, rake, wheel barrow, lopers, or saw. How do the Night benefiting Westar Elementary everyday things that bring modern day conveniences April 27 - Early Bird Reading, really work? It would Kindergarten and 1st Grade seem that we all engage in Classrooms 7:45 to 8:15am scientific thought at some level throughout each day. Sometimes, we just might not recognize it as scientific thought or calculation, or take our thinking to the next level and investigate things. Albert Einstein once said, “Scientists investigate that which already is; Engineers create that which has never been.’’ It is precisely these principles of engineering creativity that first grade teachers at Westar Elementary School sparked within their classrooms throughout the month of March. First grade classes worked through a unit focused on principles of engineering. They identified, observed and explored the ever-present shapes within our environment and worked with those shapes in meaningful ways to create and build various structures. Some of the hands-on lessons that aided in the exploration of engineering principles included creation of blueprints for the student’s “dream home,” along with actual construction of their “dream home” out of various recyclable materials. In another lesson, they used only everyday food items to build structures that they tested for durability. Other lessons allowed them to build cubes out of raw spaghetti and marshmallows, and “bridges” with cups and paper to test the incorporation of triangles and folds to aid in strength and stability. Exciting scientific explorations occur every day at Westar Elementary School! Take some time today to observe and interact with your surroundings scientifically. Consider and explore why the things around you work the way they do. If you have children at home, be intentional about creating opportunities to explore how things work. Build and create structures out of things that you might normally put in a recycle bin. Ask questions that provoke thinking about the environment. In these ways and more you will be fostering appreciation and understanding of the scientific field of engineering.

Estrella Foothills High School Culinary Arts Program Promotes Community Building Whether the future Chefs in Lisa DeCota’s Culinary Arts classes are catering an event at Canta Mia or cooking up a special demonstration for a tasting at the Starpointe Resident’s Club, there’s one thing for sure – they’re creating community. And thanks to a unique culinary program offered by their school, students are able to gain real world experience and complete necessary service hours for employment in their future. Recently, as part of their curriculum, students applied for mock positions through “Interview Day” and went through the process of being interviewed for a possible internship through employment at the Starpointe Café. The recent community experience has helped prepare students for the state FCCLA conference, which took place in March.

It has been noticed by many that Bob the goose was not in attendance at last month’s Cocktails and Conversations at Starpointe. It is with a heavy heart that we announce to the Estrella Community that our beloved goose has been relocated. Bob “made the scene” at the Yacht Club about 3 months ago. No one really knows where he came from, but it appeared as though he was domesticated, had clipped wings, and was a hit with the ladies. Over the last 90 days, droves of people have happened upon the boat dock to visit Bob. Unfortunately, that has also put Bob in a direct path with danger. Between the fish hooks, coyotes, humans and pets around the lake, Bob was living a risky life. On Tuesday, March 13th, Bob was bitten by a leashed dog on the head/neck area. In an attempt to provide care, a resident that is known to foster animals was contacted to coordinate a new home for Bob. We are happy to report that he is recovering well at his new location outside of Estrella, and enjoying his new life in a safe, fenced area with other water fowl. We will keep in touch with Bob’s new caretaker, and will continue to provide updates to Estrella residents.

people in your neighborhood The Pond Family-Steve, Clara, Madison and A.J. At first glance the Pond family is just like your family or that of your best friends; they’re ambitious, they’re outstanding citizens, they’re young and attractive, they work hard and love to stay active and all four of them participate in healthy, energetic lifestyles that are so common for families often featured in My Hometown Estrella. Yet, there is something unnoticeable, yet profound, that Steve and Clara’s family copes with every day. Hemophilia. Little A.J. is the first child from Clara’s family of five brothers and a sister to have the disorder since Clara’s father. The Ponds first learned that A.J. had “Severe Hemophilia A” when Clara was eight months pregnant. Clara is a carrier because her father had the disease. Hemophilia A is a deficiency of clotting Factor VIII. It is a hereditary disorder in which the clotting ability of the blood is impared and excessive bleeding results. Uncontrolled internal bleeding can result in pain, swelling, and permanent damage, especially to joints and muscles. It is caused by an inherited recessive trait with the defective gene located on the Xchromosome, with females’ offspring being the carriers (in this case, Clara). Fifty percent of male offspring from a carrier will have the disease. Despite knowing that their son would have a 50-50 chance of having hemophilia, Steve and Clara faced the chances and have chosen to allow A.J. to live as normally as possible. “Steve and I do not hold him back, but we take precautions that any parent should. He always wears a helmet when riding his bike or scooter. When he falls, we take proper first-aid steps. And we monitor a bruise or cut for hours and sometimes days to make sure that prolonged bleeding, especially in the joints, does not occur,” said Clara, who works as a guidance counselor at Desert Edge High School. Madison, A.J.’s older sister, is described by her parents as the best older sister any brother could ask for. She understands that her brother receives factor. Not completely understanding why, she supports the procedure and process by holding A.J.’s feet as he undergoes 20 minute “factoring” sessions every other day. The process involves administering factor through a port, which the Pond’s refer to as “A.J.’s button.” He has received the factor treat-

ments since he was just four months old. Steve added, “Although the process may be intimidating, A.J. is a great sport and has accepted the family assistance of the procedure as part of what we do for our little man.” A.J. is looking forward to attending pre-school locally this fall. And although he will never be able to play contact sports, his parents are focusing on steering him towards things he loves to do, like swimming, baseball and bike riding. The Pond family has lived in Estrella for seven years. They rejoice in the fact that A.J. lives in a completely different time-period than Clara’s father did 50 years ago, with clearer understanding of Hemophilia A. “A.J. has become a blessing. It is not a curse, just something that has become an aspect of our lives,” said his parents. “Modern medicine has blessed A.J. with the ability to be a normal, everyday, playful, little boy,” said Steve, a high-school Science Teacher at Millennium High School. Steve also is active in coaching, weight lifting and participating with Clara in the Estrella Adult Sports league. It was that small-town, community feel, safety and the great school systems that brought the Pond family, like you and I, to Estrella. Learn how you can support the Arizona Hemophilia Association through benefit events, like My Nana’s Salsa Challenge taking place this month in Tempe, AZ. Tips From Our Contributors: What are a few ways we might get ourselves physically ready for warmer weather? Su b mitte d by By ro n Gr aham , Ma rk eti n g Di r ecto r , D é jà Vu M e d Spa

Answer: Tackle a few small personal issues to build swimsuit season confidence. Even those of us who live in the Valley of the Sun can get spring fever because we are so spoiled by the bright blue skies and the warm, sometimes hot weather. So if you are experiencing spring fever or just need a change in your daily routine, I suggest that you focus on stress relief, correcting the controllable problems in your life that cause stress and get ready for a fantastic summer. Solving recurring personal issues can relieve stress. For example, hot wax treatment for eyebrows; nose and/or ear hair is the TLC necessary for our male readers who deal with the public. How about a UV-free tanning session for that just-back-from-thebeach look, without the harmful UV consequences? Ladies, if you’re tired of shaving, how about laser hair removal to permanently remove unwanted hair with no dark stubble lurking under the skin’s surface? Your skin will look refreshed with a facial, maybe a microdermabrasion, Botox or wrinkle filler for a pre-summer pick up? Are you stressed about your weight? Our physician-managed Weight Loss Program offers a program and prescription specifically selected for you. Clients reduce 10 to 20 pounds per month. What is your goal? Déjà vu Med Spa can help. Déjà Vu Med Spa is owned and operated by local medical professionals. Our website will provide additional information. Call Deja Vu with questions (623-242-9910) or to make an appointment. Most consultations are free. Visit www.dejavumedspa.com

What is an important ‘Fix-It’ item to tackle this month? Su bmitte d by Ku rt Hanke, Handyman Xtreme

Answer: It’s Time to Stop Money From Escaping From Under Your Doors! Gaps from worn out weather stripping can be costing you hundreds of dollars in heating and cooling bills every year, not to mention providing an opening for nasty desert critters like scorpions. Do this quick test: Close one of your outside doors on a sheet of paper. If the paper pulls out fairly easily and doesn’t tear, you’re likely losing energy and need to replace the weather stripping and caulking around your doors. Remember to check all outside doors, such as: overhead garage door(s) front door, back door, garage side door, and garage door leading into your home. If you discover that you have some doors that fail the paper test, replace your weather stripping and/or caulking immediately! As always, Handyman Xtreme is happy to help you with all your home repair needs. Call 602-773-1973 for Jobs Done Right!

Sailing Through Parenthood “What’s our wind speed?

“Hmmmm, I’d say about 5-10 mph blowing in from the South and the East.â€? “That’ll do.â€? The Hobie was yar‌ of course, it had to be because I had no idea how to sail it. I’d been sailing before, but to be honest it had been 25 years since I’d been in a sailboat – and I capsized that one. Fast forward to this past Sunday, and Vee stole a questioning look my way, as if to ask, “Do you know how to sail?â€? I shrugged in protest. “What’s the problem? Piece of cake.â€? Vee rolled her eyes while checking her clothing to see if they could get wet and eyeing the water to see how cold it was. We climbed aboard and shoved off (along with “ahoy matey,â€? that about exhausts my sailing vocabulary), and once I assessed our rudder system and how the sail worked, we were on our way. It didn’t take long to get the feel of things again, and with the winds dying down, we were going nowhere fast. Maddi and Sidney were trying out a kayak while Megan hopped on board our boat. As we neared the lake’s middle, the winds died down. We were facing our first doldrum with a couple of kayaking sharks approaching. We had nowhere to go, and, as if on cue, the girls started splashing. Vee made a few unenforceable threats, while I decided it was time to retaliate.

“Fire! A direct hit nailing Maddi right in the torso area. The shirt was wet, but she was undeterred. She would strike again. As both girls made their second approach, the wind kicked up again and we were out of there.

Besides splashing around and having fun, we also had something quite unexpected take place. When the winds died down and kayaks lost interest, we found ourselves taking in Arizona’s warm winter sun and engaging in a fun conversation with Meg. With nowhere to go and nothing else to do but just hang out on the lake, Megan felt like that would be a safe time and place to catch Vee and me up with life stuff. We got a lot covered. She had a lot to say. What’s funny is that during the course of any given day we may approach our kids and ask, “Hey, what’s up? The response often comes off as a dullish, “nothing or the ever so enlightening, “stuff. But you get your kid alone while doing what he or she seems to enjoy, and watch them talk your ears off. It’s simple, inexpensive, and quite rewarding for any parent who wants to connect with his kid. Whether you head off to the lake or have a picnic on the grassy knoll near North Lake on a Sunday afternoon, just hanging out with the kids will make a great relationship builder.

If You Have A Family, You Have A Reason

A common misconception with estate planning is that it only applies to wealthy people. While it is important for people with wealth to help minimize taxes and preserve their wealth, it is equally, if not more, important for anyone that has a family. If you pass away without having a Last Will and Testament, the government will determine who will inherit your assets through intestacy laws and if you leave minor children the government will also choose who will become their guardian through a guardianship proceeding. Creating a Last Will Ž and Testament puts you in charge of your assets and your children. This is increasingly important since many people live together as families and It’s convenient, one-stop, one-agent shopping with American are not legally married. as the beneficiary. In addition to the protection that life insurance offers, a trust allows you to choose a successor trustee that will help a surviving spouse manage the life insurance proceeds. This protects your surviving spouse from the neighbor convincing them that it is in their best interest to invest the inheritance in a video game or whatever the “investment may be. If both parents died at the same time or left children behind, the trustee would manage the money for the benefit of the children until they reach an age of your choosing. The children would have access to the money for their education, health and support, but if they wanted money for another reason they would have to convince the trustee. We all know people who have passed away suddenly and unexpected. While it is unfortunate to see someone pass away, it is even more difficult when they leave a family behind that is not provided for or that ends up in a legal battle to settle an estate and determine guardians of minor children. While it is not always pleasant to talk about, a little planning now can make a world of difference.

business spotlight Sonal Strasser, LMT Do you dream of reducing stress from your stiffened neck or localized pain in your lower back after strenuous exercise or long periods of time on the computer at work? Does a 30-minute drive, after a busy day, seem too inconvenient? Licensed Massage Therapist, Sonal Strasser, brings Therapeutic Massage to our doorstep. Sonal recently opened her business in the Estrella Community, where she lives with her husband, Skip, and son, Samir. Born in Bombay, India and raised in Saginaw, Michigan, this mother, wife and business owner recalls her own experiences of feeling whole through therapeutic massage procedures she has received over the past 20 years. Today, Sonal continues to receive massages on a routine basis. Her inspiring therapists have incorporated knowledge of client necessity, coupled with skill, to help individuals become healed with a new feeling of wholeness upon completion of therapeutic bodywork. It is Sonal’s desire to offer that same customized service to her own clients. “Every person that comes to me gets a massage that is designed just for them,” says Sonal. “Whether it’s chronic neck and shoulder pain or simply a need for relaxation, I’ve had many testimonials of positive results.” The local Massage Therapist grounds herself before each session, removing all of her thoughts, with continual focus on the assessment of her client’s specific needs. “I’m constantly listening to what my client’s body is telling me in order to evaluate areas of concern.” Sonal’s methods of delivering a completely customized Swedish mas-

sage session, individually designed, incorporate a variety of optional techniques that might include the energy work of Reiki, Foot Reflexology, Trigger Point Therapy, Aromatherapy, Sports Massage, Stretching Techniques and Deep Tissue Massage as some of her optional methods of tailoring an individual massage. “I love helping people feel better,” added Sonal. “I’m constantly researching and always fascinated by learning different modalities and concepts of massage.” Currently, Sonal is partnering with Hands for Heroes – a project that is striving to provide massages to one million active-duty veterans nationwide. Sonal belongs to the Associate Bodywork and Massage Professionals Group and is a member of the Estrella Business Networking Group. You can learn more about special promotions, view testimonials and review a list of answers to frequently asked questions by viewing her website: www.Sonal. MassageTherapy.com or by calling 623-256-4018. The benefits of massage can greatly reduce chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation and blood-pressure, increase joint flexibility and reduce mental and physical stress; all while creating a sense of wellbeing. Chances are, you’re probably taking care of everything and everyone else that you feel is important in your life, isn’t it time to take care of you? Sonal is currently offering a new client special of $50 for a 60-minute massage and $75 for a 90-minute massage.
