Giving Thanks 4S Ranch Style As the season has arrived for families to gather ‘round and spend time reflecting on what they have to be thankful for, Back At The Ranch thought it would be fun to check in with some of our community’s youngest residents to find out what comes to mind when they take a minute to think about what they have in their lives to be thankful for. With the help of Stone Ranch Elementary School’s Principal Cindy Venolia and First Grade Teacher Christina Adamson, local students were asked what they are thankful for this year. Their responses – serious, fun, enlightening – show that even the youngest among us have many reasons to give thanks. Page 12

3rd Annual Thank You Run Benefits Two Great Organizations The 3rd Annual Thank You Run on November 22 is a special walk/run, where not just a percentage, but all proceeds, after expenses, are shared between two non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations – the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation, (affiliated with the San Diego Foundation) and Helen’s Closet, (affiliated with the ALS Association of Greater San Diego). Local Sport Clips Supports Help Heroes Call Home Campaign Once again this year Sport Clips Haircuts in the 4S Ranch Village shopping center, at 16615 Dove Canyon Road, has joined more than 950 of the franchise’s locations across the country in launching its annual “Help A Hero” fundraising campaign to support the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) Operation Uplink™

For as far back as I can remember giving back has always been a part of my household. Even though growing up my family did not have much extra money – what with four young kids running around – my parents always made sure we found ways to recognize how good we had it and how we had a responsibility to help others. As a kid, I can remember being asked (forced, might be closer to the truth) to volunteer at various church functions, including handing out Christmas greens from the back of a freezing-cold garage all the while getting pricked by holly branches and smelling like pine. I never could quite grasp why we had to do that year after year, but in reflecting on that opportunity now I recognize what my parents were trying to instill in me and my brothers and sister – we all can find ways to give back and make a difference in our community. Today, my parents still model the importance of giving back. They are involved in their church’s Social Concerns committee which participates in the Interfaith Shelter, offers donuts on Sundays and provides meals to families at Thanksgiving, just to name a few examples of the group’s efforts. As their children, my siblings and I also give back to our communities in a variety of ways including coaching youth sports and volunteering at our kids’ schools. In this issue of Back At The Ranch, giving back and giving thanks take center stage. There are so many people in our local area who clearly understand the impor-

tance of getting involved and making a difference and illustrate that by their actions. In this issue we feature a few of them in the hopes their stories might continue to inspire us all to do more, especially at this special time of year. Form example, the local Sport Clips is helping to support the military once again this year. We also have the upcoming Thank You Run on Thanksgiving where everyone in the community can help two wonderful organizations. One local school is offering an Adopt-A-Family program for the holidays. I’m a big believer those actions, big or small, that allow us to focus on improving the lives of others can really mean the world to the recipient of our good work. It doesn’t have to be anything outrageous or grandiose to be transformational and impactful. It just needs to be sincere. Giving thanks also resonates most when it is genuine. Like the local school kids who share with us what they are thankful for, we have many people we need to say thank you to as well for all their great work in helping bring this community publication to you. Contributors like Katie Seidenwurm and her great gardening articles; June Zhou for helping us keep readers informed of the 4S Ranch Library’s activities and events; Theresa and Ray Shay for making extra efforts to make this such a great community; Debi Renken for her continued contributions; and to local school staff like Principal Cindy Venolia who share the good work of their students and teachers and, of course, all our great advertisers. Sincerely, thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

on your doorstep Girls Scouts of Rancho Bernardo & 4S Ranch Electronic Recycling While the Girls Scouts has certainly been associated with tasty cookie sales for years, the youth service organization does so much more than provide sugary sweets. For local girls in Troop 8343, being involved in Girls Scouts means giving back to the community and assisting fellow members. To that end Troop 8343 will be gathering used print cartridges and small electronics (cameras, phones) and recycling them in February for World Thinking Day on February 22. The money from the event will be donat- Elena, Revati, Kirstin and Marie ed to the SHARE Fund (Share her Annual Real Expenses) and will be used locally to help girls who can’t afford to For questions or more attend events or buy their uniforms, etc. julie_purdy@starkey.com

According to troop leader Julie Purdy, there are many, many girls in our communities who cannot participate fully in events due to costs so this is one of the ways to give back. Most people just throw away their print cartridges and don’t recycle them so it is good for both the girls and also the community. Troop 8343 has volunteered to help with the event and the girls will have a drop off box at 10936 La Alberca Avenue to collect the electronic items. Cartridges and small electronics can also be brought to the World Thinking Day Event on February 21. information, please contact Julie via email at

on your doorstep World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra to Perform at Del Norte High School Performing Arts Center The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, the most popular and sought after big band today, brings their legendary sound to the Del Norte High School Performing Arts Center for two performances Sunday, November 4. A matinee performance at 2pm will be followed by an evening performance at 6pm. The Orchestra’s namesake Glenn Miller was the famed bandleader of the Big Band swing era. Miller formed his orchestra in 1938. Striving to differentiate himself from the other big bands of the day, he developed a unique sound by having clarinet and tenor saxophone play a song’s melodic line in unison while three other saxophones provided backing harmony. He is fondly remembered for his iconic recordings of “In the Mood,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Moonlight Serenade,” and “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” and as well as many other wellknown standards which highlight this appealing approach. The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra was established by the Miller estate to honor and promote his legacy. The concerts will be held at the Del Norte High School Performing Arts Center, 16601 Nighthawk Lane. Proceeds benefit the Del Norte High School music program. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online through http://dnhsmusic.org. More information about the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra can be found at http://glennmillerorchestra.com. on your doorstep Adopt-A-Family Program Sponsored by Del Norte High School PTSA Del Norte High School PTSA is once again participating in the Palomar Council Adopt-A-Family Program. Palomar Council oversees all the PTAs in the Poway Unified School District. This program was started over 10 years ago and has helped over 500 families in need of some financial assistance during the holiday season. The families are identified by staff and the counseling department, then are contacted and asked to submit “wish lists. This year Del Norte High School will be adopting families from the 4S Ranch and Del Sur communities. Del Norte’s theme this year is “Nighthawks Can Make a Change. Change buckets will be available at the final home football game on November 2 for people to make donations to the program. These change buckets will also be available to make donations during pick-up during the final days of the fundraising period. A donation box will also be available in the school’s main office. If you would like to make a donation, please send checks (payable to Del Norte High School PTSA) or gift cards to discount department stores (Target, Walmart, etc.), gas stations and/or grocery stores and send them to: Del Norte High School 16601 Nighthawk Lane, San Diego, CA 92127 Attn: Adopt-A-Family If you have any questions regarding the program, please contact Jane McGuire, Adopt-A-Family Chair at Janemcguiresd@yahoo.com or Pam Roth, Student Services at Del Norte High School at PRoth@powayusd.com.

Candy Buy-Back Program at Moser Orthodontics Moser Orthodontics will help the community and our patients avoid injury to their teeth by buying back Halloween candy through the 5th Annual Candy BuyBack Event. Dr. Moser will give cash for candy paying a dollar for each pound of candy surrendered and donate the proceeds to your child’s school.  As California schools struggle with budget cut backs, Dr. Noel Moser is offering schools a way to raise money and at the same time save the students from excess sugar by giving them cash for candy – in a time when fundraising is not just important, but for many schools imperative. The collected candy will be donated to the troops and the San Diego Rescue Mission. Moser Orthodontics collected over 2,500 pounds of candy last year and has donated over $5,100 back to the schools over the last five years of the candy buy back.  Candy can be brought to the office – located at 14701 Via Bettona, Suite 205 – between Thursday, November 1 and Tuesday, November 6 from 9am to 4pm. For more information, call (858) 756-6878 or visit www. MoserOrthodontics.com

on your doorstep Danceology – Putting Its Best Foot Forward and 4S areas. “Many of our dance rooms have interesting themes that are appropriate for various age groups,” shared Shana Witkin, Danceology spokesperson. “We offer a very family-friendly environment with positive and quality instruction.” At a time when dance shows have secured a place on network and cable television with shows like Dancing With the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, America’s Best Dance Crew and even Dance Moms, it may be safe to say that the art of dance has never been more in the spotlight. As these shows illustrate, dance can be hard work and require lots of dedication. But dance is also supposed to be fun. At Danceology in 4S Ranch, that last part is at the focus of the approach to teaching the finer points of dance to people of all ages. The Danceology Performing Arts Campus is located in the 4S Ranch Industrial Park, 10750 Thornmint Road, Suite 102, and boasts a 14,000 square foot facility with seven studio rooms and more than 100 non-competitive classes in all genres and levels of dance. The staff consists of over 15 teachers specializing in different dance styles. Many are dancing professionally in the industry such as Megan McBride (tap) who is on Gregg Russell’s company “Tap Sounds Underground” and Kayla Kalbfleisch (contemporary) who is a member of Travis Wall’s company “Shaping Sound” and has been a featured dancer on the X Factor and in the Oxygen Network’s show All the Right Moves. For the younger folks, Danceology’s Tots & Pre School Program headed by Julia Pearson offers an extensive amount of classes for dancers ages 2-4 years and 5-7 years. Danceology happily hosts fun and active birthday parties on site. In addition, Megan McBride is starting North County Dance Teams – two teams comprised of dancers from middle schools in the Peñasquitos

Danceology also maintains a very strong link with the local community. The local dance studio supports local school sports teams, provides charitable gift basket donations to nonprofit events throughout the community and actively participates in Bells of Freedom gift drive for military families. One of the most popular interactions Danceology’s has with local residents is through the annual holiday show. This year, Danceology’s Holiday Showcase is scheduled for Saturday, December 15 at Ranch Bernardo High

School’s Performing Arts Center. The show incorporates multiple levels of dance. The first two shows (10am and 1 pm) include roughly 50 tiny tot dancers ages 3-8 in the first half, while the second half is a Nutcracker that incorporates dancers of all ages. The 4pm show is solely a Nutcracker Extravaganza featuring 90 dancers. Tickets cost $6 (3-11 years) and $12 (12 years and older). The Holiday Showcase, the giving back to the community, the wide range of classes, the quality instruction and the competitive teams demonstrate Danceology’s commitment to being a great place for recreational dancers as well as those looking to take their career in dance to the next level. But having fun will always be part of the equation, as well. “We want our kids at Danceology to have a smile coming in and smile going out,” Witkin said. meet your neighbor The Jones Family – Nate, Lindsay, Sienna, Sawyer and Hudson If the number one job of parents is to help develop smart, respectful and confident children, then Lindsay and Nate Jones are well on their way to being outstanding parents. The local 4S Ranch couple has three delightful kids – Sienna, 4.5, Sawyer, 2.5 and Hudson, 15 months. While young, Lindsay and Nate have introduced their two daughters to lots of community activities including swimming and dance, but it is the lessons learned at home that shown through right away as I met the family recently. As I rang the doorbell and then was invited into their home, Sienna and Sawyer both greeted me along with their father. I made my way inside and quickly Sawyer informed me, with a very polite tone, that I needed to take off my shoes as the carpet is still relatively new. The Jones’ middle child proceeded to show me where to place my shoes and then guided me into the dining room area where I would conduct the interview with Nate as Lindsay kept an eye on the children eating lunch. At one point during my conversation with Nate, a local loan officer with U.S. Bank, Sawyer returned to be sure that I hadn’t left yet. Nate, who grew up in Seattle, met Lindsay (a product of the Rancho Bernardo area) in college at Azusa Pacific as they both were marketing majors. After college, the two returned to the North County San Diego area to be close to Lindsay’s family and were married in July of 2005. The couple arrived in 4S Ranch in late 2005 and couldn’t be happier with the community and the neighborhood.

“We love 4S Ranch,” Nate said. “There are a lot of community activities and you can walk anywhere. For the kids, the local parks are incredible and having them nearby is huge for us. As the kids get older, Lindsay and I are looking forward to being involved more with the community through their school activities and spending Saturdays at the fields. I grew up with my dad coaching me and I look forward to doing that with my kids.” Both Sienna and Sawyer take dance classes at nearby Danceology and have been involved in gymnastics at Rock ‘n Tumble. They’ve taken swimming lessons at the local pool in 4S Ranch and have even tried soccer – a sport Nate grew up playing. The girls aren’t the only ones active in the Jones household. Lindsay leads a workout program at Pure Barre 4S Ranch and Nate plays golf as much as he can. There is no doubt 4S has been the ideal community for Nate and Lindsay to start a family and to impart valuable life lessons. “I like that this community is not crowded,” Lindsay said. “It has everything we need, but not with too many people coming in and out.” When the time came to conclude the interview and say goodbye, both Sawyer and her sister Sienna saw me off with a big hug and wide smiles. Even their brother Hudson made his way over to say goodbye. As I left the Jones family, I could not help but be struck by how nice, polite and confident these young children had been with me and how these strong, budding social skills will serve them well as they get older. Yes, Nate and Lindsay are certainly doing something right.

feature Local Sport Clips Supports Help Heroes Call Home Campaign The values of giving back and giving thanks lie at the heart of any great community. The idea of helping to improve the lives of others while being grateful for all we enjoy is one everyone can rally behind and support. In 4S Ranch, individuals, organizations and business have all found ways to do exactly this. Once again this year Sport Clips Haircuts in the 4S Ranch Village shopping center, at 16615 Dove Canyon Road, has joined more than 950 of the franchise’s locations across the country in launching its annual “Help A Hero” fundraising campaign to support the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) Operation Uplink™. Sport Clips’ goal is to raise $500,000 in its sixth year of donating to the program, which offers free call days to deployed and hospitalized U.S. service members. The campaign will continue through Veterans Day, November 11, when $1 from every haircut service will go to Operation Uplink. “As a local business owner, I’m proud to join this effort to support our nation’s heroes – many of whom are on their third or fourth deployment or fighting to recover from war injuries in hospitals,” says Terry Klinker, Sport Clips owner. “The free calls Help A Hero sponsors will help keep these service members and their families – many of whom are right here

in San Diego – connected monthly.” Klinker’s stores will also raise funds through a variety of different ways, including in-store donations, softball tournaments, concession sales at Qualcomm and parking lot events. They will also offer free haircuts to any active-duty servicemen on Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11. All retired military will receive a 20 percent discount with proof of BE A HERO BY their past military service. HELPING ONE. “There is still a great demand for the Operation ASK YOUR STYLIST FOR DETAILS. Uplink program despite the drawdown in troops. The brave men and women who’ve been hospitalized or who are still serving in harm’s way need and deserve the connection home,” says VFW National Commander John Hamilton. “Our commitment to troops doesn’t diminish with a drawdown and we’re very grateful to have Sport Clips on our side to share in our commitment.” To date, Sport Clips and its clients have donated more than $1.3 million dollars to Operation Uplink, making almost 2 million phone calls home possible for U.S. service members. Sport Clips is now the VFW’s largest “Free Call Day” sponsor. To find out more, visit Sport Clips at 16615 Dove Canyon Road (next to Fresh & Easy) in the 4S Ranch Village or go to www. sportclips.com/events-promotions/help-a-hero.html.

feature 3rd Annual Thank You Run Benefits Two Great Organizations The 3rd Annual Thank You Run is a special walk/run, where not just a percentage, but all proceeds, after expenses, are shared between two non-profit 501(c) (3) organizations – the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation, (affiliated with the San Diego Foundation) and Helen’s Closet, (affiliated with the ALS Association of Greater San Diego). Thursday,November 22 –Thanksgiving Day – join neighbors and community friends for a 5K, 10K or Kids 1K Fun Run at 4S Ranch Community Park, 16118 4S Ranch Parkway. The 5K begins at 7:30am with the 10K getting underway at 7:45 and the Kids 1K Fun Run at 9am. For local resident and businesswoman Theresa Shay, the event and the organizations being supported hold very personal significance. While Shay sits on the Board of Directors for the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Foundation, she started, along with her siblings, Helen’s Closet after her mother Helen Mok lost her battle with ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” Shay serves as the CEO of the organization. “My mom was the most giving person we knew,” Shay shared. “Whenever she found good deals on items, she would buy them and store them in her closet. Then, when someone was in need, she would give them something from the closet. The gifts went to everyone. Helen’s Closet is a way for us to help keep my mom’s memory alive while assisting others with ALS. The Thank You Run is a great way to get the family together and support the community.” According to Shay, Helen’s Closet.org is committed to continuing Helen’s legacy by providing wheel chairs, ramps or other “comfort items” free of charge to persons suffering from ALS. ALS robs people of their ability to walk, talk and ultimately breathe. The cause or a cure for ALS has not been identified. The 4SRanch~Del Sur Community Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life and meeting emerging needs in 4SRanch and Del Sur by increasing responsible and effective philanthropy; build-

ing a community endowment for the benefit of the region; providing funds annually to community organizations and causes, and giving the community a vehicle for legacy planning and gifts that will benefit 4SRanch~Del Sur now and forever. Memberships in the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation are the framework for charitable grants that are given to organizations and schools that demonstrate a need and an ability to utilize the funds in an effective way. One hundred percent of all donations goes for charitable purposes in solely the 4S~Del Sur communities. The donations are 100 percent tax deductible. The grants celebration this year awarded $20,000 to technology programs at five local organizations. The programs include the Interactive Video Center at Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego ($7,500), Bloggie Lives to Enhance the Monthly Video Broadcast Production at Del Sur Elementary School ($1,000), Mobile Learning Solutions at Monterey Ridge Elementary ($2,450), CHOICE / ASB Technology Collaboration at Oak Valley Middle School ($3,000), Compass Learning Advanced Student Libraries at Stone Ranch Elementary School ($2,000), Installation of a Promethean Board at Stone Ranch Elementary School ($550)and the Apple iPod Touch Learning Lab, also at Stone Ranch Elementary School ($3,500). This also marked the first distribution of grants from the Matt McLaughlin Live Here, Give Here Matching Program. The late Matt McLaughlin of Rancho Bernardo left a generous legacy gift to The San Diego Foundation for use by the Affiliate Foundations in North County. Thanks to the creation of the matching program, all 4SCF membership generated grantmaking funds (half of each yearly donation) will be matched, dollar for dollar, for at least three years. The Live Here, Give Here match doubled this year’s grants, from $10,000 to $20,000. To become a member contact membership chair, Tanny Joyce, tjoyce@apex-ps.com or Trudy Armstrong at trudy@sdfoundation.org; visit www.4sranchcommunityfoundation.org or call Trudy at (619) 764-8602. By participating in the Thank You Run, you support the local community through the 4S Ranch~Del Sur Community Foundation, while also assisting in helping terminally ill ALS patients as they struggle against this incurable disease. To register or for more details on the event, go online to www.ThankYouRun.com.

school news Del Norte High School – The Flock: Spirit Incarnate By Uday Su r e sh

The verdict is in. Del Norte High School is no longer the fledgling motley crew without spirit that it once was. A new era in Del Norte history has recently unfolded, bringing with it the fruits of four years worth of labor. The newfound aura of hope that inundates the friendly blue and green halls of this nascent school can be largely attributed to the assimilation of school spirit in the form of a promising group deemed “the Flock.” A force to be reckoned with, the Flock has gained respectable following on campus, and as senior Trevor Renken explains, “You may have heard of RB’s ‘Stable,’ or Westview’s ‘Black Hole.’ In essence the Flock is the same idea; it is representative of our student section.” School spirit is no longer a joking matter; the jeers of “Del Norte Middle School” are poised to be perennially relinquished from the visitor side of the school stands. The Flock does not stand alone. Behind the new powerhouse on campus lies clubs of the same caliber – including Nighthawk Nation – who foster the collection and celebration of Nighthawk spirit. It seems the youth of Del Norte are anything but disaffected, building a sense of nonhierarchical continuity that has enveloped all four grade levels. On a typical Friday night under the bright lights, one can find freshmen with seniors in the spirit sections, adorning the same blue and green body paint with the verisimilitude of a master and apprentice.

On the topic of game day, spirit senior Bri Boretto said, “On the first game when everyone got together and filled up our roped-off student section it was the most rewarding feeling to see people be that supportive of our school. I think the name ‘The Flock,’ specifically, has added this engaging, competitive side to it that has even gotten other schools to give their student section a name.” Seniors pass on the Nighthawk pride, giving back to the school the spirit that the school once instilled within them. Organizations on campus that serve as large impetuses for the influence of the Flock, like the Del Norte Network, have made it a point to include underclassmen in all aspects of Del Norte Spirit. In reference to the beloved Nighthawk, upperclassmen are encouraged to respond to underclassmen by “taking them under your wing” and effectively provide an opportunity to adopt the Del Norte spirit-centric disposition. The Flock has quickly been adopted as the center of Del Norte’s student body. In the words of Renken, “Quite simply, the Flock is everywhere, spreading the Nighthawk spirit.” The Flock can be found at Del Norte events all around campus, and go all-out for every Friday football game. school news Stone Ranch Elementary Fall Festival

Successful Golf Scramble Raises $15,000 for Del Sur Elementary School Programs

On Friday, October 19, more than 1,000 Stone Ranch Elementary students and their families attended the school’s annual Fall Festival. Children of all ages participated in carnival games, a rock climbing wall, a photo booth and a cakewalk. The festival also featured a delicious Hamburger Factory dinner, an incredible bake sale and the Stone Ranch Foundation raffle. “It is the best carnival I have ever seen,” said Mackenzie (pictured with classmate) as she attempted to roll her ball into the goal at the Hockey Puk booth! This year’s festival brought smiles to many of the children’s faces at Stone Ranch. The annual Fall Festival is put on by SRES parent volunteers and PTA members. It is a wonderful demonstration of giving back to our 4S Ranch students and the community.

On Friday, September 21, 103 golfers participated in the Del Sur Educational Foundation’s Third Annual “Fore the Kids Golf Scramble,” raising $15,000 for Del Sur Elementary School. The event, which took place at Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort & Spa located in San Diego, generates additional funding for school Impact Teachers, as well as science programs. This year’s festivities included the golf scramble, a lunch buffet catered by L&L Hawaiian Barbeque, a dinner banquet and silent auction. Winners from this year’s tournament included the KB Homes team, as well as Mr. Joe Aboud. Non-golfing Foundation supporters were also able to participate by purchasing designated spa packages offered by the Inn’s award-winning spa. “Del Sur Elementary is a top-notch school within a wonderful community, and events like this both support the school and bring friends, families and local businesses together,” said Shelley Federhart, president of the Del Sur Educational Foundation. “It’s a great day!” Money raised from tickets purchased for the scramble, as well as the designated spa packages and silent auction items, benefit Del Sur Elementary School; specifically Impact Teachers, who improve the teacher-student ratio and provide students with an even greater learning environment. Funds also support the school’s Engineering is Elementary program, which promotes engineering and technological literacy among children. The event was generously sponsored by Master Your Sports, Anne Schrieber and Bob Hartung of Coldwell Banker, Standard Pacific Homes, Shea Homes, California West Communities, KB Homes, and Black Mountain Ranch, developer of Del Sur. Nike and Callaway Golf donated many items for the raffle and silent auction. Later this year, the Foundation will launch its “Make an Impact” campaign. Landscaping to Attract Birds

As fall approaches, I notice birds in my yard more than any other time of year; perhaps because there are less flowers and foliage to demand my attention. The fall is a good time to focus on the birds in our yards. They animate the landscape with their movements and songs. What can we do in the garden to attract birds? Feeders are an obvious tool to use to offer food to them, but there are other ways to invite them to our yards to stay. Birds, like all creatures, need food, water and shelter. Their food Grape Vine (Vitis) sources are fruits, seeds, nectar (for hummingbirds) worms and grubs. Feeders can help, but birds only get about 25 percent of their food from feeders, the rest is from their habitat. Water in the garden can be provided in ponds, water features as well as store-bought or natural bird baths. Different birds like different depths of water for bathing and drinking. To accommodate this, stones can be placed in water bodies to allow birds to test the depths before going in. Some birds also like running or dripping water. Besides food and water, birds need shelter to hide and nest. Cover can be created by thick foliage and overhanging branches.

In general, birds like messy places. If you have a well-groomed garden, consider leaving an area unkempt. Leave this area full of foliage including dead branches. The insects that burrow in the fallen limbs are food for hungry birds, such as Chicadees, Woodpeckers, and Nuthatches. Be aware, that these messy places may attract other wildlife too, such as squirrels and rodents. For that reason, it’s best to keep this area away from the house. Birds also prefer landscape areas that are transition areas, known as “edges. For instance, birds will likely rest in the area between the messy area and the lawn. Here, birds can dig for worms in the lawn and hide in the foliage of the messy area. Back to the food for the birds – plants that bear fruit that remain on the plant into the winter are great food sources. An example of a species that

has berries all year is Viburnum. This popular plant species has hundreds of varieties that bear berries in black, white, red, yellow, or blue. Another fruiting plant that birds love is Vitis (grape). I have heard of gardeners planting this vine thinking that they will eat the grapes themselves only to find that the birds have eaten them first. The grape vine is a lovely landscape plant that has beautiful fall color as well.

Native plants are an obvious choice to attract local birds. There is a trend to plant natives in residential settings as they are naturally adapted to our climate and region. The birds will follow. An example is the Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) which is a large deciduous shrub. Some refer to it as “Christmas Berry. It is an evergreen shrub that will reach 6’-8’ tall and can serve as a background plant at the edge of your yard. Birds will flock to eat the small red berries all winter long. Another native plant that attracts birds is the Manzanita (Arctostaphylos). This plant comes in a variety of forms, from small tree to shrub to creeping groundcover. Kinnikinnick (Arctostophylus uva ursi) is a common ground cover reaching 15 tall. This evergreen plant has red berries that the birds will devour. In addition to attracting typical birds, Manzanitas will attract hummingbirds. The fall-blooming Manzanitas are one of the few nectar sources for hummingbirds in the flower-scarce fall. Some birds like the seeds that they retrieve from flower buds. Some seedloving birds are Sparrows, Chickadees, and Finches. Some perennials that have attractive seeds are Sunflowers (Helianthus), Cosmos, Black-Eyed Susans (Rudbeckia), and Yarrow (Achelliea). In the garden when flowers are wilting and drying out, refrain from trimming them off immediately as their seed pods will attract birds. There are a number of websites that offer list upon list of plants that attract birds. www.mastergardenerssandiego.org, www.birds.cornell.edu, www. laspilitas.com/bird.htm. This fall take some time to plant a few bird-loving plants in your yard so that you can enjoy the bustle that the birds create in our outdoor environment. The birds will thank you for it.

business highlight Rancho Bernardo Inn At a time when most of our attention seems to turn to all things shiny and new, it’s nice to know that there is still strong appeal in the familiar and traditional. Homes and businesses with character and a long-standing presence add much needed perspective to our newer communities. These mature organizations show us value in sticking to tried-and-true approaches to interacting with the community and riding out the highs and lows of the inevitable economic swings. As it prepares to celebrate its 50th year next year, Rancho Bernardo Inn continues to be a wonderful place to stay, eat or play for local residents and visitors alike. The well-kept grounds, beautiful fountains, warm and welcoming guest rooms, friendly staff, the serene setting for its spa and, of course, the fantastic golf course make this nearby spot one of North County’s best getaways without having to go far at all. “We are a family-owned business and a major part of the local area,” said John Gates, General Manager for Rancho Bernardo Inn. “We were one of the first businesses to open in Rancho Bernardo and even today most of our clients are local residents.” The Rancho Bernardo Inn works hard to maintain that appeal for its local client-base. In addition to the amenities one might expect to see at a quality resort, Rancho Bernardo Inn also prides itself on offering events and activities that bring families back year after year. With the October Halloween event now done, the staff are hard at work preparing for “December Days

& Nights.” The event runs Thursday, December 20 through Sunday, December 23 and features live storytelling, a lifesized gingerbread house, live petting zoo, a light show and interactions with Santa. This community-centered activity has been going on for about 20 years now and has grown over time. According to Gates, many local families have made a visit to December Days & Nights a part of their annual holiday celebrations. For years, locals have also enjoyed the chance to dine on outstanding cuisine at Rancho Bernardo Inn’s El Bizcocho restaurant. The popular dining spot is currently undergoing a $2.5 million renovation, but will re-open soon as AVANT to dish up a wide variety of mouth-watering delights. The resort does continue to offer live music every Thursday through Sunday with many musical styles featured as well as a local artists series with artwork displayed in the coffee and gift shop. A trip to the Rancho Bernardo Inn would not be complete without a visit to the San Diego Luxury Day Spa. The “Made Fresh Daily” treatments feature carefully selected organic and natural ingredients designed to pamper the skin and refresh the senses. Spa specials and packages are available for guests or visitors. Rancho Bernardo Inn also offers a “Resort Club” for frequent patrons. Members can enjoy use of the facilities, discounts on services and interesting and fun quarterly events. Packages with local businesses such as Bernardo Winery and Stone Brewing Company add to the choices available at this not-so-hidden local gem. Yes, there certainly is value to be found in experience, especially when that experience is based on years and years of doing it right. And Rancho Bernardo Inn has been doing it right for almost 50 years now. Rancho Bernardo Inn is located at 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive in San Diego and
