Del Sur Student WINS GRAND PRIZE for Nationwide Terraycle Contest Ashlyn Howell a 3rd grade student at Del Sur Elementary entered a nationwide contest sponsored by TerraCycle and Elmer’s that challenged people to design a product using discarded Elmer’s packaging and/or classroom waste. Ashlyn came up with the idea of a classroom “Hall Pass” using old Elmer’s glue bottles, glue stick containers, and empty watercolor paint trays. Page 6
Dr. Rich Newman, Principal of MRES, Is Moving On Dr. Newman is leaving Monterey Ridge but thankfully, not the Poway School District. He has long been a “future thinker” and honestly his positive (boundless) energy, educational experience and creative instincts will best serve the district as a whole rather than focus all his ideas on one school. To say he will be sorely missed is an understatement, but the district did a very good thing when they selected him for the job.

I’m going to get right to the point. The time has come for me to say goodbye. Yup, this is my last issue. No more Editor’s Corner, no more cover stories, no more Business Spotlights. I’m hittin’ the skids, movin’ on, embracing change. Where am I going you may be wondering? That’s the funny part, I don’t know. I have some ideas, but nothing concrete yet. What I do know is that it is time to face new challenges. As Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” I need to take some shots at finding a new path. Remember, once I wrote about “The Road Less Traveled” by Robert Frost? I’m at that crossroads again and I need to take the less conventional path. I need to leave the comfort of the trusted and familiar and travel down the new and unknown. It’s who I am. Ask my friends, I can’t even walk the dog on the same trail two days in a row. I’ve been with my pals at Back At The Ranch for over 5 years now. The fact that I stayed for 5 years is a testament to how much I have enjoyed working for this organization. I’d like to thank Tim Minjares and Karen Smith for giving me the opportunity to become the Editor of Back At The Ranch. We met 5 short years ago and I agreed to work “on probation” for 3 months while we all “evaluated” each other. It would appear that we all passed with flying colors. Anyway, thanks so much Tim and Karen, you have been incredible mentors, supporters and friends. You have given me absolute trust and allowed me to work autonomously. I worked in my pajamas and set my own hours. I met amazing, inspirational people and I learned something new every time I put a new issue together. Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me such an indelible experience. And you, my lovely 4S Ranch, Del Sur, Rancho Santa Fe Valley, and surrounding area readers.............I simply have no words for the tremendous support you
have shown me over the years. You’ve been an incredible audience, always filled with positive feedback. Having said that, you have also been an inspiration to me. From bringing the community together to help a homeless mother and her two kids get back on their feet, to traveling across the globe to provide mosquito nets for poor villages susceptible to malaria, you have left me speechless and shown me the power that humankind has to effect change in this world. You’ve made me proud to live in this community the abundance of goodness and sincerely kind people that live in this community is mindboggling! There is no such thing as impossible in this area! Finally, I want to thank all the individuals - who are too numerous to name - for supplying me with all the great info that ultimately ends up in print. Info such as what’s going on at the 4S Library to what leagues are coming up at the Boys & Girls Club to the latest insider scoop on who’s moving into our shopping centers. You all know who you are, thank you, thank you. I’ve very much enjoyed working with all of you and I hope you’ll continue to share the info with Back At The Ranch. Yes, it’s a good situation I leave behind, but I’m looking forward to the future. For the next several months, Mike Minjares, of Fountain Media Group (our community newspaper’s publisher), will continue to provide you with all the latest neighborhood news until a viable solution is attained. on your doorstep Del Sur Student WINS GRAND PRIZE for Nationwide Terraycle Contest Ashlyn Howell a 3rd grade student at Del Sur Elementary entered a nationwide contest sponsored by TerraCycle and Elmer’s that challenged people to design a product using discarded Elmer’s packaging and/or classroom waste. Ashlyn came up with the idea of a classroom “Hall Pass” using old Elmer’s glue bottles, glue stick containers, and empty watercolor paint trays. The judges liked Ashlyn’s idea so much she was selected as one of 4 finalists and ultimately, on April 23 she was announced as the GRAND PRIZE WINNER! TerraCyle was founded in 2001 by a 20-year old Princeton University Freshman. It is now one of the fastest growing green companies in the world. TerraCycle’s purpose is to eliminate the idea of waste. They do this by creating national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste. Anyone can sign up to be part of these systems by participating in programs called Brigades, and start sending them waste. You can learn more about Terracycle, and Brigades, by visiting www.terracycle.net. Mom, Pam Howell, volunteers quite a bit at Del Sur Elementary and has started several “Brigades” at the school. After watching lots of kids walk to and from different parts of the school with paper notes in their hands,
she realized there was a need to standardize a system that did not include paper. Ashlyn and her mom came up with the idea of using all the creative supplies (lots of Elmer’s glue bottles and sticks) that get used up rather quickly in Ashlyn’s 3rd grade classroom. Here’s Ashlyn’s (with a little help from Mom) description of how she made her “Hall Pass”: I glued two empty watercolor paint trays together (hot glued with Mom’s help), to form the back. I then glued empty glue sticks onto the bottom tray to form pegs. Next, I printed signs (where you might need to go in the school) onto paper, cut, and glued them to our empty glue bottles. I used old scraps of ribbon to tie around the neck of the glue bottle, so it could hang on the peg, and another between the handles on the paint tray, so it can hang on the wall in our class. Now, every time someone needs to go to the office, our teacher doesn’t have to write a note (wasting paper), we simply take the glue bottle! I added stickers to personalize Ms. Schofield’s Hall Pass system, but you can decorate it any way you want to for your school or teacher. The community as a whole is proud to have Del Norte High School. A mere three years old, the doors opened in August of 2009 with a whopping 750 students. Roughly 275 of them were sophomores and the balance freshmen. The school has stretched, grown, added classes, added faculty, and most definitely added students. Today the school has a total student body of 1,559 students. Basically the school has doubled in three years and has become one of the most popular high schools both in and out of the Poway School District. The students at Del Norte have much to be proud of. This past year the school achieved an API score of 864 - the highest in the district for high schools! Academically we have high achievers, but please don’t faint when I say “it’s not all about the academics.” The students at DN have established well over 40 clubs. These clubs have directly impacted the culture of the school allowing kids opportunities to engage in areas they are most interested and provide outlets for them to socialize and be leaders. Typically athletics at a new school struggle because of the lack of upper classmen but despite the odds, Del Norte came through with 10 league championships and 1 CIF Championship. That means 11 banners are able to hang in the pag e 6 : ba ck a t th e ra n ch
gym, 11 reminders that the future is bright for Del Norte High School athletics. Yes indeed there have been a lot of great moments over the past three years. One that Principal Greg Mizel will never forget is the night Del Norte played its first varsity football game against Rancho Bernardo High School. The stands were beyond packed. The band was playing, planes were flying overhead, parachuters were jumping and the crowd was roaring. The first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie firing up the crowd even more. Del Norte got killed that night but no one cared. It was an exciting, emotionally charged evening that brought not only the kids together, but the community as well and it set the tone for what was and is to come. Greg Mizel is thankful that the seniors at this school have been risk takers. Thankful that they were willing to leave wonderful, established high schools to come take a chance on a young upstart and be part of something new and different. They have helped shape what promises to be a highly respected and recognized high school. “I couldn’t have imagined the ride we’ve gotten over the last three years. Even on my worst day I am still thankful for everything about this school and I’m so excited that my grandkids will be able to look at the school someday and say ‘that’s where Grandpa was the principal!’” Every step made over the last few years has been sprinkled with “moments” but On June 7, 2012, 244 Seniors will stand tall and proud, ready to achieve probably the most special moment in the history of the school: they will graduate as the first senior class of Del Norte High School. • Required dress for men: Dress shirt and tie; dress slacks; dark dress shoes. Flip-flops or tennis shoes are not acceptable. • Graduating seniors may not carry cell phones, cameras, flowers, beach balls, or articles of any kind into the ceremony. • No adornments are allowed on the graduation gown or cap (i.e. leis, scarves, etc.) • Evidence indicating possession, consumption, or use of any intoxicating agents will result in immediate removal from the graduation ceremony, as will the use of any type of fireworks or explosives. • Pranks, vandalism, or being on campus outside of normal school hours are a violation of school rules. Any participants in such acts may be suspended from school, required to pay restitution for damages, and prohibited from participating in senior activities including the graduation ceremony. Dress in cool, comfortable street close for practice; beach attire is not permitted. Students MUST attend Graduation Practice to participate in the Graduation Ceremony. 1:15 Graduation Check In Seniors arrive and report to the correct gender locker rooms for check in, with your cap & gown in hand. Gates to the school will be locked. Seniors may enter through the stadium entrance only. Parking will be at a premium, and graduates will be required to turn in their keys until after the ceremony. NO beach balls or other items that will distract attention from other graduates will be allowed. Diploma Pick Up Immediately following the ceremony, until one hour after, students may pick up their diplomas in the breezeway under the library. Diplomas not picked up June 7 will be available during normal registrar office hours
Senior Trip to Disneyland Permission slips & money due no later than May 11 Students will be leaving the school on chartered buses at 8:50 SHARP. Students will be in Disneyland all day, and will report back to the bus at 8:50 SHARP. Students will return to Del Norte by 11:00 pm

on your doorstep Dr. Rich Newman, Principal of MRES, Is Moving On Dr. Newman is leaving Monterey Ridge but thankfully, not the Poway School District. He has long been a “future thinker” and honestly his positive (boundless) energy, educational experience and creative instincts will best serve the district as a whole rather than focus all his ideas on one school. To say he will be sorely missed is an understatement, but the district did a very good thing when they selected him for the job. So where is he going? He will become the new Director of Learning Support Services. The position was newly created by Superintendent John Collins and is part of the districts initiative: “changing the way we do school.” This position will enable Dr. Newman to focus on something he loves best - figuring out new ways to teach kids utilizing the tools of the future. In other words, using technology to better prepare our kids for the future. As Dr. Newman states “some of the jobs these kids will hold don’t even exist yet! Rather than be ‘outside’ the box thinkers, let’s be ‘new’ box thinkers.” Dr. Newman is tasked with providing kids with skills that will not only prepare them for college but for the marketplace. How can we take kids out of what has become a stagnant learning environment - sitting in chairs, taking notes while teachers teach at them? It’s the same scenario that has been in place for years. It’s a monumental task, for sure, trying to change century old methods of teaching, but Dr. Newman is up for it. In fact, in order to better conceptualize his mission, he took on teaching a math class. He utilized multi-dimensional methods of learning - compass learning, Khan Academy video learning, him working with the kids, kids working
on their own and more. Students moved at their own pace, but were fully vested in what they were doing because of all the many different facets that were bringing the information to them. It created a more interesting learning environment. The venture was quite successful and proved to him he was headed in the right direction. Dr. Newman described to me one very cool way he realized how important it was to allow kids to learn within their technology culture. Never having been a fan of video games, one day he came home to find his son playing a video game. He asked his son to finish up the game and do something else. When his son responded with “okay but just let me get to the next level, I know what I have to do to get there” a light bulb went off in his head. His son was so excited about the game because it was his personal challenge. The video game provided him with goals, taught him the skills he needed to achieve his goals, provided immediate feedback and his achievements were driven by his own motivation. Brilliant! Face it people, technology is not just running up ahead, its sprinting up ahead. Even in the face of all the budget cuts, the Poway School District continues to excel in innovative, higher level thinking. The district is always eager to present our kids with an education that will provide them with real world relevance. It’s why the Poway School District is continually ranked as one of the best and it’s why this latest endeavor will help our kids be part of the future, not just run to keep up. Dr. Newman said he felt pure excitement when he was told he got the job. He said it was his dream job and that he wants to “take education to the next level.” He’s looking forward to the road ahead because he feels he can make a difference. I believe he can too. Del Norte Grad Nite Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Fundraiser Raises $11,000 The first annual Del Norte PTSA Nighthawk Parents’ Nite out Cinco de Mayo Casino Fiesta on May 4 was a huge Success! We are so happy that our first parent event turned out so well. We would like to thank all our nighthawk parents, about 150 attending - fantastic! The live and silent auction went very well as did the basket raffles, 50/50 and balloon bust - a personal favorite. We ate plenty of the healthy Mexican food - yummy - thank you Simple Nutrition, the Fioroni Family. We had some amazing desserts donated by Savvy Interiors (Susan Wintersteen) and Cut Cakes ( Jill Reilly) and great casino games provided by Event Designs Entertainment - Lisa Kivel. Rosy Floral Design donated most of the flower centerpieces, adding to our ambience. A huge thank you to our amazing Casino Night Volunteers - Wow! Volunteers are so valued because without them none of this would be possible! They worked so hard for weeks. meet your neighbor The Bennett Family Owners Of The New Flippin’ Pizza Restaurant Jason, Carrie, Ethan and Grant Bennett are the happy owners of the new neighborhood pizza joint, Flippin’ Pizza. Ethan, 4 and Grant, barely a year old don’t really understand the concept of owning a business, but they’ll get there, you just wait. Right now Ethan has his eyes more on playing at the park and Grant, well, hanging out in Mama Carrie’s arms is pretty cool. Carrie and Jason met in college, at Cal State San Marcos. Carrie, a former CSO - Child Support Officer for the county of San Diego stays at home to take care of her two growing boys. Besides watching the boys, she enjoys working out and is a huge supporter of the “Body Back” program. Jason is a former Marine. He was a Huey Crew Chief where he basically got to shoot guns out of a helicopter. As much fun as that may sound, after five years and four months it was time to move on so he got out and went straight to college. The universe was watching over him because not only did he meet Carrie, he also fell into an opportunity that has shaped his destiny. Patrick Farley, the founder of Flippin’ Pizza came to CSSM looking for an intern. It was a paid internship but as luck would have it, Jason was the only person to apply. Needless to say he got the job and clearly it was meant to be because eight months later he was asking to own his own franchise and roughly seven months after that he was the proud owner of the Flippin’ Pizza Restaurant in Encinitas.

Meanwhile, Jason and Carrie had been living in Carmel Mountain Ranch but had actively been looking around for a more “convenient” place to live – something more central to both their jobs. They fell in love with 4S Ranch, found a house and in January of 2011 they made the move. Believe it or not, they had simultaneously been on the prowl to find a new venue for another Flippin’ Pizza. The Encinitas store had proven to be a successful venture and this area really did not have a strong pizza presence, soooooo, why not! Everything came together and this past April the 4S Ranch Flippin’ Pizza opened its doors for business. And what a business it has been! Following the Grand Opening on May 5, where they gave out free slices of pizza, there has been an uninterrupted flow of pizza patrons! It’s been so busy that the wait has, at times, been as long as 45 minutes! Even so, customers are quite pleased with the taste and have repeatedly thanked Jason for providing real New York pizza! The kids love watching the dough being flipped in the air and salad lovers have access to custom chopped salads. Since the store is overflowing with “newness,” Jason is currently the head pizza flipper and primary chef. He spends many hours at the store both serving customers and training new employees. While he continues to work out the bugs and create a smooth flow of operations, he’s doing his best to keep customers happy. Jason is looking to hire more budding pizza flippers, as he puts it, “I’ll hire people with a great attitude and I’ll train them for aptitude.” Flippin’ Pizza has already integrated themselves in the community by agreeing to be one of the sponsors of the Annual Stone Ranch Fun. They have also scheduled their first “Dine Out Nite” with Sunset Hills Elementary this month. They are so committed to helping community schools and organizations that they donate 50 percent of the proceeds back! They see it as a community building program. So, what do they enjoy doing when they are not running the family pizza store or chasing little boys around? 3rd Annual DSES Foundation Golf Tournament It will be here before your know it so mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Del Sur Elementary School Golf Fundraiser. The event takes place on September 21, 2012. Please join us for another fun-filled day of golf and dinner banquet at the beautiful Rancho Bernardo Inn. In addition to the scramble format golf tournament, The Rancho Bernardo Inn has also offered our non-golfers a package at their luxurious spa where the school will get a portion of the proceeds. The event is planned for Friday afternoon through Friday evening and we are in the process of arranging a babysitting service to begin immediately following the end of the school day. The service will be available for an hourly fee until about 9 pm which should allow plenty of time for everyone to enjoy a great day and a wonderful dinner following the event. The dinner banquet will have a fantastic menu and there will be a cash bar for both golfers and non-golfers to enjoy. The Annual Stone Ranch Fun Run Raised Over 14K!!!
We have enjoyed looking through the beautiful artwork entries that are hanging on the office walls. Thank you for sharing your artistic talent with the Stone Ranch community. If you have not already picked up your child’s artwork, please do so before school ends in the hallway just outside of the office.
Stone Ranch had an amazingly successful Fun Run on May 9! The school raised more than $14K! The majority of these funds will go to pay for the 8K Rizzo copier, and will also help fund programs for the school such as assemblies and art. Emily Owsley (pictured) co-chaired the event, and spent countless volunteer hours ensuring the day went smoothly for the teachers and students. For the first year ever businesses were invited to sponsor the event. Over $2K in donations came in from Wendy’s, Velocity, 4S Eyecare, Dr. Li Orthodontics, and Flippin’ Pizza. Way to run Stone Ranch!!

Tablet Pilot News Awhile back we shared with you that we had launched a first-of-itskind tablet pilot with T-Mobile. In partnership with T-Mobile, we received 50 tablets (three different types) and 10 hotspots all with 4G service. I am thrilled to share that the launch of our pilot was extremely successful and T-Mobile has now graciously agreed to grant us all the equipment free of charge. We know that having a piece of technology does not mean that we can all use it effectively. To that end, we designed a TLC (Teaching and Learning Cooperative) to define our learning and to ensure that there was the proper support, training and professional development to enhance our learning. The goal of our pilot was to begin to see how mobile learning can enhance teaching and learning in the classroom. We continue to be very excited about this new partnership, the potential that it has to truly shift the way instruction occurs in the classroom, and the possibilities that lie ahead.

school news Oak Valley Middle School Eighth Grade Speech Finalist Shares Her Speech Every year the 8th grade students are required to write a speech describing their time as a “middle schooler” and what the three years have meant to them. I’m proud to say that although my daughter’s speech was not ultimately selected to be read at graduation, she was one of 12 finalists that made it to the end. She has graciously consented to allowing me to print her speech. Congrats to all the kids for writing such wonderful speeches - I heard from the teacher that this was one of the most difficult years to select a winner! – Debi Renken
Karli Renken - 8th Grade Speech Life is like a book. Every day, every week, every month we start a new chapter. There are different versions, sections, and sequels. Some parts may be dry and slow, some so unbelievably exciting that you just can’t put the book down, some bring tears, and some bring laughter that lasts for days. But in the end you’re always glad you read it. Middle school has been a number one bestselling novel. Filled with all the elements of a great book: drama and humor, friendships and surprises, problems and solutions, and let’s not forget romance. It has been all over the place; a true adventure. But that’s what makes a good story, right? The first chapter in the book of life, Edition 2: Middle School. We all started out as small, immature 6th graders, unsure about what was ahead of us, but hungry to know. We walked in on the first day with butterflies in our stomach, nervous, uncertain, and a little frightened, but in the days to come we got comfortable with our surroundings, started new friendships, and we met amazing teachers. This was the exposition of our books. We found out what the setting was, who the characters were, and discovered a little bit of conflict. We completed the beginning of the tale, but our story was still incomplete. We still had two more years of the plot: rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. In 7th grade we reached the point in our stories where the plot thickened. We no longer had to worry about meeting new friends or being the smallest at school, but there were subplots along the way. Whether in school, or out, we have all faced them. Drama, keeping grades up, or maybe parents divorcing. But these things did not make us put down our stories, they just made us want to read more and

see how everything resolved itself. It’s these parts of middle school that made us stronger. They made us who we are today. After finishing the middle of our story, we got to the best part: the conclusion. Where everything just seems to fall into place like pieces of a puzzle. There may have been struggles at first, but it has worked out as we are now off to high school. As we grew and matured our responsibilities increased as well. These responsibilities caused some struggles throughout the year. Between grades, friends, and family, it was overwhelming sometimes. The pressure of getting ready for high school didn’t help ether. But all that’s behind us now because we finished, we are done. Finishing any book is an achievement. No matter how thick or thin, you always feel good about yourself when you finish. And not only have we achieved finishing the book, but we have accomplished many things throughout our stories that are each unique and special. As George Bernard Shaw once said, “life isn’t about finding yourself, life is about creating yourself.” Over the past 3 years, a beautiful individual has blossomed inside each of us. We have been through troubles, and days where nothing feels right. But when a book gets boring you can’t simply discard it and give up, you have to turn the page. In life turning the page is what makes us stronger. Throughout our days at Oak Valley we have overcome obstacles and become better, stronger people. We have forged fabulous friendships that will last lifetimes, and met stupendous teachers that will never be forgotten. Congratulations everyone, we have finished the exciting, the heartbreaking, the inspiring tale of middle school. But as exciting as this tale has been; are you ready for the sequel?
Teen Writers’ Camp The San Marcos Writing Project, in partnership with the Poway Unified School District, is sponsoring a two-week writers’ camp for students entering grades 6 – 10. The camp, which will be held here at Oak Valley, will run from June 18 through June 29. Today’s real estate market is a far cry from what it was five or six years ago. Back then, houses were selling as quickly as signs went up and they were selling for top dollar! The market was booming and the American dream was bursting at its seams – home ownership was pervasive. I’m not saying selling houses was easy during those times, but let’s just say there were a lot more real estate agents/brokers in the biz. As we are all very much aware, that booming market all but ground to a complete halt in 2008. Prices dropped, the economy slopped and well, realtors were dropping like flies. Sue Otto withstood the torrential downpour, not because she got lucky but because, plain and simple, she knows what she’s doing. More on that in a bit. Sue Otto is pretty much a household name in this community. Not only does she live and work here, she is thoroughly involved in the community. She’s such a huge supporter of baseball and softball that down at the community park she has a field named after her! She supports the schools. She used to be on the Oak Valley Foundation board (her son is no longer at OVMS) and has served on many committees to organize school fundraisers. Sue also regularly contributes to 4S Ranch events such as Easter Egg Hunts, Santa’s Tea’s and she has sponsored numerous golf tournament fundraisers. Sue has lived in 4S Ranch with her family since 2003. Her daughter Madeline is in the third grade at Stone Ranch and her son Elijah is a freshman at Del Norte. Coming up in October she’ll be starring in an event of her own................her wedding! She and fiancé, Scott (a Real Estate Attorney) met at a Padres game and they have decided to bring both families, Sue, Scott, Madeline, Elijah, and Jack and Courtney (Scott’s kids), together in Sue’s current home in 4S Ranch. Congrats Sue and Scott. Sue attended the University of Colorado, Boulder, graduated with a

degree in International Affairs /Entrepreneurship and attended SDSU where she earned her Master’s Degree in Marketing. Out in the “real world,” she worked in the high tech industry and co-founded a software company called Digigami, Inc. in 1994. She really enjoyed the sales and marketing part of running the company and although she has an enormous amount of respect for the high tech industry, it eventually became clear that it really didn’t suit her. Raised in a family of real estate professionals, she was surrounded by the biz in every aspect of her life.
