With the vast majority of Europe accessible within a three-hour flight from the UK, contrasts of cities, lakes, mountains and historical sites are closer than you may think. A weekend at a beer festival with friends, a romantic city break, a family jaunt in the mountains or a relaxation retreat, opportunities are endless. Whilst we have an understanding that everyone has a budget, it is common that some travellers sacrifice convenience for cost. Although cheaper when making a reservation, that three hour shared coach journey isn’t as appealing when you arrive. This is something that Fred.\ Holidays considers carefully when crafting holiday experiences. After all, value is more important than price. Within this brochure you will find a selection of tailor-made holidays all of which can be adapted to your preferred requirements. In addition to this we have featured a selection of Escorted Holidays which will give you that additional in depth holiday experience.

Financial Security For your peace of mind – In addition to being a part of one of the UK’s most established travel companies, Fred.\ Holidays is ABTA and ATOL bonded ensuring that you are financially protected in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Italy

Further south, destinations such as Florence, Rome, Pisa and Naples all delight in different ways, whether it be iconic sights, delicious food or striking vistas that will stay with you forever.

Desirable destinations can be found all over Italy’s ‘boot’, giving you so much choice when it comes to deciding where to go. Do you stay in the north and relax amongst the scenic lakes? Do you head to one of the major cities for a historic city break? Do you follow your stomach and venture into the gourmet surroundings of Tuscany or Puglia? Or do you cross the Tyrrhenian Sea to soak up the sun on the beaches of Sicily and Sardinia? One thing is for sure, this beautiful country is somewhere to which you can return time and time again. As well as the serene surroundings of Lake Garda and Lake Como in the north, this part of the country is also home to Alpine ski resorts, the chic city of Milan and the romantic setting of Venice.

As mentioned before, beach breaks are also a key reason to travel to Italy. Fantastic beaches can be found in Liguria, Abruzzo and Puglia, but perhaps the best examples are on the islands. A short ferry to Elba, Ischia, Sicily or Sardinia will take you to glorious white sands and also help you find some of the country’s hidden gems.

Venice

Milan Turin

You don’t have to go to the big cities to enjoy these things, though. The famous fishing villages of the Cinque Terre are known for providing an insight into slow-paced Italian life, whilst also offering picture-postcard scenery that tourists flock to see. Likewise, the towns and villages found along the Amalfi Coast are very easy on the eye and are also in touching distance of major sights like Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Popular City Breaks One of the best reasons to enjoy a city break is to experience a city’s culture, enjoy local cuisines, and to escape everyday life. Some of our most popular Italian city break destinations include:

Amalfi Coast

Rome

Featured on postcards and Pinterest boards all over the world, the Amalfi Coast is home to a collection of towns and villages that ooze charm and romance. From Positano to Ravello, colourful houses, quaint harbours and glorious beaches sit in front of a striking backdrop of lemon trees, vineyards and rugged peaks. Plus, if you can tear yourself away from the views, the food here is also a delight.

With the largest concentration of Roman monuments in the world, Rome is definitely a place for history buffs. That’s not the only reason to travel to this part of Italy, though, as there are also numerous art galleries to explore and romantic streets through which to wander.

Florence The capital of Tuscany is one of the most beautiful cities in the country and a delicious destination for true foodies. The locals have immense pride in the culinary history here, so whether you choose to dine in a traditional trattoria or from one of the modern food trucks, a mix of locally sourced ingredients and unmistakable passion will be felt in every bite.

Milan As a world leader in the fashion industry, Milan conjures up images of beautiful models strutting on catwalks and high-end designer shops offering the perfect excuse for some retail therapy. The 21st century blends effortlessly with the Renaissance, as Italy’s second-largest city has reshaped its skyline with the addition of some breathtaking modern architecture. There are even plans for it to become Europe’s Silicon Valley with the like of Google, Microsoft and Apple creating permanent homes for themselves.

Naples Positioned at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, you may begin to think that the best things to do in Naples involves travelling out of the city. However, whilst these are all great day trips, you can discover so much without going anywhere. Start at the archaeology museum, where you’ll find many artefacts uncovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum, before touring Castel dell’Ovo. Don’t forget to try an authentic Margherita pizza and to feel the buzz on the lively city streets. 6

Venice One of the most romantic cities in the world is also one of the most unique. Its canals, bridges and islands create a setting like no other and one which attracts visitors from all over the world to see for themselves. Whilst the water creates Venice’s magical image, it is the elaborate palaces and churches lining its banks that demand all of the attention.

Verona The most famous couple in the history of literature first crossed paths (and stars) in Verona and we’re sure you’ll fall in love with this enchanting city just as quickly. Art and architecture exist in abundance, as does the kind of food and wine that will dance on your tongue – all in touching distance of Lake Garda. In short, come for Romeo and Juliet but dig deeper and there are plenty of reasons to stay.

As tailor-made travel specialists we can create your perfect city break based around your preferred departure date, airport, destination and duration. Simply contact us today with your requirements and let us create your personalised city break.

Lakes of Italy If you want to see the charming side of Italy whilst enjoying a relaxing break, the lakes in the north of the country are perfect. Lake Como and Lake Garda are arguably the most well-known spots, but there are many others that offer a secluded stay within breathtaking surroundings. As well as the charming towns and villages that can be found on each shore, the lakes can be a welcome break from the scorching temperatures elsewhere in Italy. Protected by the Alps and with breezes coming off the water, the climate here is a lot more comfortable.

Popular Locations Bellagio, Lake Como This stunning town has been eulogised by writers such as Shelley and Mark Twain. It features delicious delis, luxury hotels and the Romanesque church of San Giacomo.

Sirmione, Lake Garda Built on a peninsula that juts into the lake, it is home to the dramatic Rocca Scaligera, a castle complete with drawbridge and moat.

Isola Bella, Lake Maggiore This small patch of land off the shores of Stresa is dominated by a Baroque palace with magnificent gardens.

Sacro Monte di San Francesco, Lake Orta In the town of Orta, this religious route takes you to 21 chapels that feature frescoes relating to St. Francis of Assisi. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers spectacular views of the lake.

As tailor-made travel specialists we can create your perfect lake stay based around your preferred departure date, airport, destination and duration. Simply contact us today with your requirements and let us create your personalised lake stay. Contact your travel agent, call 0800 988 3369 or email sales@fredholidays.co.uk
