Located in the foothills of Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze, Garmisch-Partenkirchen will move you with its unspoilt nature, vibrancy and Bavarian traditions. The area is famous for its breath-taking scenery, snow-covered mountains and crisp mountain air. Walk along the streets, stroll down the alleyways and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes; with every moment you’ll discover a little more of the variety that Garmisch-Partenkirchen has to offer. Historical sights, beautiful walks, art and culture and an ideal spot to visit local towns such as Oberammergau.

Berchtesgaden

k a g e f ro

The beautiful town of Berchtesgaden, with its houses decorated by murals, is dominated by the majestic Watzmann Mountains. Bavaria’s kings chose the land at the foot of Mount Watzmann as their summer residence and what they once enjoyed exclusively is now available for everyone. Another notable peak is the Kehlstein mountain with its Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), offering spectacular views of the area. Hiking, golf, tennis, summer sledding, ice-skating, cross-country and downhill skiing are all available in Berchtesgaden. One of the most picturesque lakes in the region can be found at Schönau am Königsee.

Places to see

Things to do

Partnach Gorge: The river Partnach flows through a narrow, mile-long gap between high limestone cliffs.

Grassl Schnapps Distillery: Take a tour of Germany’s oldest distillery and taste a sample of the clear tasty Schnapps distilled from the Gentian flower.

Werdenfels Castle: Accused witches were held, tried and executed at the turn of the 16th century. The castle became an object of superstitious horror and was abandoned in the 17th century.

Things to do Castle Werdenfels Walking Trail: Follow the 4km trail alongside the castle ruins and enjoy an exciting trip through history. If you get hungry on the way, stop at the Berggasthof Pflegersee or the Werdenfelser Hütte for a delicious meal. Take the cable car to the top of the mountain and enjoy the stunning views. If you’re feeling brave, venture out onto the viewing platform. Take an excursion to nearby Oberammergau and Ettal - both only a bus ride away. The monastery brews its own beer and schnapps but as the brewers are not allowed to taste alcohol this is done by experience and a great sense of smell!

Royal Castle: Visit the former summer residence of the Bavarian royal family. Obersalzberg Documentation Centre: A permanent exhibition of the Institute of Contemporary History at Obersalzberg. It was commissioned by the Free State of Bavaria and explores the use of the Obersalzberg mountain retreat by the Nazi party. Mount Jenner cable car: Travel up to the highest gateway of the Berchtesgaden National Park where you will find over a dozen hiking trails with the most stunning views over the German Alps. Salt Mines: Berchtesgaden was once a major producer of the ‘white gold’ and now you can visit the salt mines. The highlights include the crossing of a 100m-long illuminated lake and the special train taking you into the depths of the mine.

Where to eat and drink Bräu Stüble: A traditional restaurant that brews its own beer and offers a great atmosphere.
