Estonia Fresh from celebrating 100 years of independence from Russia in 2018, Estonia continues to flourish since its release from Soviet rule. The usual grey associated with cities that spent time behind the iron curtain is nowhere to be seen, superseded by colourful buildings and a thriving art scene that give the country its own unique identity. The charming cities are typically compact and void of too many tourists, a major reason to buck the trend and explore Estonia.

Perhaps a bigger draw for adventurous travellers is the chance to go off grid and get out into the wild. A low population density and large number of natural habitats combine to create some excellent opportunities for fans of extreme activities. However, if you like things at a slower pace, there’s plenty of time to simply admire the beautiful wildlife and nature all around you. Just keep in mind, if Estonian folklore is anything to go by, you might not be alone in the forests.
