2022 YEARBOOK

GRADUATING CLASS 2022

Principal's Note

To the Graduating Class of 2022

Congratulations on the wonderful year we have enjoyed together. It has been a real pleasure watching you grow and develop as learners and leaders within our school and the community.

My lasting memory of our 2022 graduates will be the positive comments about the group that have been shared with me by almost every person that has had interactions with them. People such as bus drivers, camp staff, visiting guests, staff from other schools and of course the Comet Bay staff. This is a real credit to each student as an individual, but also how they support each other as a group. I am confident that this will rub off on our next group of leaders.

There have been many highlights across the year. These include our camp to the Swan Valley, visit to Parliament House, our colour explosion, sporting activities, cooking, working with your buddy class, overcoming learning challenges in the classroom and creating new friendships and strengthening others.

While some of you have been part of Comet Bay for your entire school life, with others more recently joining us, you all have contributed to making this a very special year and this a very successful group within our school.

I encourage you to reflect on not only this year, but all your eight years of schooling and those people who have supported you on this journey; your teachers, assistants, coaches, friends and your parents. You are over half way through your educational journey, don’t wish it away, but enjoy all the experiences that are on offer and all the challenges that lie ahead.

I hope that you will look back fondly on your time at Comet Bay. I am excited about your futures and wish you all the best in becoming the person you dream to be.

COMET BAY PRIMARY SCHOOL 2022

Message from the P&C

On behalf of the Comet Bay Primary School P&C, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding graduates of 2022 and wish you all good luck in your upcoming high school journey in 2023.

Every year we are fortunate enough to have many outstanding Year 6 students contribute to the Comet Bay way and the class of 2022 certainly upheld this standard. All of your assistance in being mentors for your peers and upcoming students has been of valuable input in growing together at Comet Bay. These values and life lessons at Comet Bay Primary School should see you well in your next step of education.

Many of you have taken on extra roles this year and we acknowledge your hard work and dedication in roles such as Student Councillors, Environmental Ambassadors, House and Arts Captains, your contributions have been appreciated. For those who assisted in other ways such as Breakfast Club, Sports Carnivals, Playground duties and Buddy classes, your extra care was noted and we thank you for taking the time to help out.

Thank you to our parents, families, friends and followers for the understanding and compassion shown towards our school, staff and students whilst we battled another start to the year with the pandemic, forever changing rules, and guidelines! Your resilience has been outstanding and we now have a more relaxed feel towards the end of the year.

The P&C would also like to thank all parents, families, friends and helpers who have kindly donated their time to volunteer at school events during their graduating child’s time at Comet Bay. Many hands make light work and without the help of our volunteers many events would not be possible.

The P&C have had a very busy year with events such as raffles, car boot sale, cookie dough, colour explosion, disco and more! 2022 was the start of Friday Coffee’s supported by ‘The Pastry Place’ with a donation of sales going back to the school.

Thank you to our P&C Members and attendees in 2022. Your input at meetings, donations, suggestions and voluntary time is always appreciated. We could not give back to the school without the constant support of our wonderful P&C members who are always willing to go above and beyond to help such a large school.

So, to the graduating class of 2022, we wish you all the best. As you move on to the excitement of High School, remember the values you have learnt at Comet Bay to get you through the new challenges. Remember to always look ahead, work hard and have fun! Keep those smiling happy faces that we have grown to love seeing every day as you enjoyed your last year at Comet Bay Primary. We hope that you enjoy and reflect upon this Year Book that has been gifted to you as a kind donation from the P&C.

Thank you from your P&C 2022

Notes from the Teachers

Lea Tolofua – Teacher LA11

This year of 2022 has been a true pleasure, Filled with good memories for us all to treasure, Because of you people I leave this year better then when I started,

You are all kind, thoughtful, funny, smart and definitely warm hearted.

I loved seeing you all grow from small year fives into big year sixes,

And many of you have developed some ‘interesting’ characteristics, Parliament House was fun, but camp was a blast, Where you flew, you climbed, fears you surpassed. You have made me so proud to be your teacher, And I hope in your distant memories I might be a feature, Please go into the world and be your true selves, Pat the dogs, ride the swells, Make yourselves happy, take care of each other, You are perfect the way you are – there will never be another.

Julia Happel – Teacher LA12

Dear LA12, congratulations on graduating primary school and being a wonderful class to teach. I’m so proud to see you all start your next journey to high school. I feel like such a lucky teacher to be able to come to school each day and thoroughly enjoy my job. This is because I got to spend my days with all of you, so thank you.

LA12, you worked hard this year academically and I have seen growth and progress in each and every one of you.

From completing your assignments, to tests or everyday work, you all persevered and achieved goals. Keep up this strong work ethic in high school, it will get you far in your education.

Reflecting on the year we have had puts a smile on my face. Some of my favourite memories include making you all complete the impossible April Fool’s Day word search, your enthusiasm for our class novel and our personalised letter from Mr Mark McGowan.

Some of the proudest moments of the year was seeing the strong, understanding and accepting friendships you have formed with one another. You were consistently kind to each other and supported each other throughout the year. This is also a reflection on your amazing families and how well they have done raising you.

I feel honoured to be your year 6 teacher, thank you for a fabulous year LA12 and I look forward to hearing about your future endeavours in the coming years. Good luck for high school!

Kelsey Fitzpatrick – Teacher LA13

What an incredible year LA13 has had. All the stars aligned for me when I was asked to take on this beautiful class half way through their graduating year. Although I’ve only had the privilege of being your teacher for half of the year, I am so grateful that I got even this short amount of time with you. There have been so many memories made inside and outside the classroom that I know will live on with you forever. Whether it be the friendships you’ve made, the lessons you’ve learnt or the challenges you’ve overcome, I know each student has made an impression on all the teachers and students at Comet Bay.

16 COMET BAY PRIMARY SCHOOL 2022

They tell you when you study to become a teacher that you will never forget your very first class. I can tell you with absolute certainty that this is true. Every student has left a mark on me that I will never forget, you are kind, creative and of course comedic. This class has left me with a significant amount of standout memories. All of which include either interesting and intelligent responses, warm heartfelt words or sharp aching laughter. Never have I met such a humorous and witty group of students with a determination to make me laugh. I will dearly miss our after lunch joke telling as it always brought me such joy, even when the jokes were absolutely dreadful. I encourage you to take this joy into high school and to share it with all the new friends you may encounter. I know you will make all of us proud in your exciting years to come. I leave LA13 with the final and simple message that both myself and Mrs Herd have always employed. Be kind.

As the saying goes “Time flies when you are having fun” and this is true as 2022 has gone in a flash. It is lovely to look back on the year and the fond memories we have created. LA14 have surprised me with their optimistic and positive view on learning and life. They have brought so much energy to everything they have done. From their creative rapping, intense maths sessions, bonding at camp and innovative designs in technology, the students have continued to impress me. You have enjoyed the little things in life, developed long lasting friendships and opened your minds to all the possibilities the world has waiting for you. You have done your families proud and have grown in to independent and responsible students whose fearlessness will take them far. Thank you for a wonderful start to year 6 and continuing the lovely dynamics throughout the year. It is with absolute appreciation that I would like to say thank you for being an incredible and thoughtful group of students. You have accomplished so many personal goals and faced challenges with enthusiasm and perseverance. Reflect on all you have done and learnt along the way. You do not know what the future holds however you have developed the tools to succeed in achieving your dreams.

2022 has brought creativity to the next level in our Art room at Comet Bay. The Year 6 students have found success through a wide variety of creative art projects. Progressing and pushing themselves by reflecting on their own work against the success criteria throughout each art project has allowed each individual student to keep focused and create artwork of an excellent standard.

It was wonderful to see students experimenting, enhancing, extending themselves and encouraging others to create beautiful artwork they were clearly proud

of including the bright Australian Pop Art posters inspired by Mulga. We experimented with blending reality, imagination and technique to produce a “moment in time” drawing based on Shaun Tan illustrations. The huge term 3 project was a big undertaking. Not only did we investigate famous artists, large life like paper maché heads of these artists were formed and painted. Three replicate artworks and a realistic portrait of the artist were produced in small groups to a very high standard. Finishing off the year with textured landscapes preparing them for success in high school next year.

The purposes, motivations, intentions, and inspirations behind art are endless. I hope we have challenged you to creatively bring together reality, imagination, medium, and technique to produce something that will make the audience feel like they are part of that story. The Arts teach creativity and innovation in a changing world, from designing cars, sketching out a new idea, designing a new product to putting a proposal together.

I truly wish happiness to all our Year 6 students in their future years and I encourage them to continue to take risks and experiment with a variety of art mediums, increasing the breadth of their learning experiences they have had here at Comet Bay.

Ibu Tiffany Yeap - Indonesian Teacher

Dear Graduating Class of 2022

Where has the time gone? It seems like yesterday you were in your first Indonesian lesson, learning and saying your first Indonesian word!

#Year 2 #Shy #Cute #Little #Anxiety #Energetic #Happy #Wide-eyed learners

I have been extremely lucky and privileged to have shared five years of primary school with you. I have seen you grow from nervous, tentative and loving Year 2 students learning a new language and culture for the very first time, to becoming the confident, caring, beautiful and motivated young people that you are now. It has been a wonderful journey.

‘Terima kasih’ (Thank you) for your commitment and endeavours for all that you have brought during your learning journey of Indonesian over these years, I am so incredibly proud of you.

There are many memorable moments that we have shared, these are a few of them off the top of my head. Indonesian excursion to the Consulate of Indonesia in Perth, lunch at an Indonesian restaurant, Indonesian breakfasts, visiting teachers from Indonesia, Batik making, playing traditional Indonesian games – ‘makan krupuk’, pencil in the bottle, learning about the topic ‘Keluarga’ (Family) and you all laughed at saying the words ‘sepupu’

and ‘adik’. All in all, they’re memories that I am sure you will all treasure and remember forever.

‘Selamat’ (Congratulations), ‘Semoga Sukses’ (Good luck) and ‘Sampai jumpa’ (Goodbye).

Jahmala Rowden - Senior Phys Ed Teacher

Wow, what a lovely year it has been! I have been extremely fortunate to experience my first year as the Senior Physical Education Teacher with the most wonderful group of Year 6 students.

This year I have enjoyed teaching the Year 6 students a range of skills, drills, and modified games. Students have been able to demonstrate their versatility in multiple sports such as: tennis, flag belt rugby, basketball, athletics

and cricket. They have also displayed Attentive Listening, Mutual Respect and Appreciations No Put Downs while following instructions during Phys Ed lessons.

My personal highlights of activities this year would have to be; over the river game in rugby, king of the court in tennis, knock out in basketball and of course the fan favourite battle damage!

The Year 6 students have participated in multiple house carnivals, with many representing our school at an interschool level. As always, the competition is fierce, but the enjoyment factor was always the aim. Watching our students striving for their personal best while representing our school proudly – both in terms of performance and behaviour.

Pamela Mackney-Walker - Senior Science Teacher

“One of the capabilities most amazing of the human being is the capacity to generate new ideas.”

Wow! The end of the 2022 school year! A time to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of our wonderful graduating class. Let me start by saying that I have really enjoyed teaching you this year and I want to thank you all for exploring the world with me.

As you are all aware, I’m a scientist by training, so my advice to you is this: as you go through life, try to think like a scientist. I don’t mean that you have to be a scientist, although I personally think this is a great thing to do, but it’s not the essential part of science. Science isn’t about facts that you learn in school, it’s a habit of mind, an approach to dealing with the world. The most important thing in science isn’t the bottle ecosystem we created in class or how to create an electrical circuit. The most important thing in science is the moment when somebody looks at the world and says “Huh. I wonder why that happened?”

Science isn’t a body of facts, science is a process for figuring out how the world works: if you see something interesting, come up with an idea of why that might happen, and test your idea to see if you’re right. Figure out why things happen the way they do, and then use that knowledge to explain new things, or to do things that you couldn’t do before.

So, when I tell you to think like a scientist, what I’m saying is to use that process, which is something anybody can do. You don’t need to be good at math or take special classes--you just need to observe the world around you, ask questions, and look for answers.

So, think like a scientist. Ask questions of yourself, and of other people and look for real answers--don’t accept “that’s just the way things are.” Push a little and find the real reasons why things are the way they are. And when you find those answers, use them to make the world a better place. When you see something that doesn’t seem to work as well as it should, find out why, and what you can do to improve it. When you see something in the world that seems unfair or unjust, don’t just shrug and accept it, look for answers, and work to make it better. You, my amazing graduating students are all scientists of the future. Keep exploring!

Swan Valley Camp

Blue skies and amazing weather greeted our students for our Year 6 camp to the Swan Valley Adventure Camp, 90 minutes north, on the banks of the Swan River. For our nearly 100 students, our accommodation for the next 2 nights was 3 magnificent buildings dating back to the 1920’s, with two of these being two storeys.

No one was ever going to be left hungry as the dining facilities were first class, with good quality food and the availability for seconds (and thirds in some cases). A cooked breakfast each morning set our campers up each day followed by morning and afternoon tea, as well as a cooked lunch.

Each day our campers rotated through a series of activities, with each one providing students with a different challenge. The commando course, which led them through tunnels, over obstacles, swinging over water and up and down hills, proved very popular with our students. The flying fox also provided many highlights with students overcoming the initial fear of ‘letting go’ to embracing the feeling of flying, with some going upside down or holding a partner’s hand.

The canoeing activity was enjoyed by all, even those who ended up falling out of their canoes and taking their partners with them (special mention Mrs Di Giovanni).

Our canoeists particularly liked the game of tag ‘world domination’.

Staff were very impressed with the skill our students showed during the archery sessions and the team work that was displayed during the team building games. Other activities our students took part in were the high ropes course, orienteering, the blackout zone plus games in the hall.

Our Student Councillors took control in the evenings to run some fun and memorable games in the hall. These students planned, prepared and hosted the games which were well received by their fellow campers. A movie each night was followed by a little bit of supper, which left our campers nice and tired and quick to go to sleep each evening.

Camp provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to make new connections with other students and for our staff to see their students in a different environment. Well done to all our campers for making this a very memorable experience.
