Brief

The project tries to resolve the ‘tradition’ in Hamam and Caravanserai both as the building programme and the spatial character. It re-discovers the spatial quality and functional necessity of these two programme by looking at their details by zooming in and the spatial organization of the programme by zooming out.It builds itself by reinterpreting the outputs of the process of ‘resolving the programme’. As Hamam and Caravanserai have a strong and mostly repetitive representa- tion in our subconscious, how these programmes exists in today’s world? -translation-differentiation-reinterpretation-

WATERSCAPES putting a drop of ink in a jar of water, taking a photo of an exact moment, drawing it on paper, first with ink and brush, then with pin pen,

spatiality of water? spatiality of ink? and the spaces born out of them, coming together.

“The hands want to see, the eyes want to caress.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

HAMAM Throughout history, the action of cleansing, bathing, meeting with water was linked to a process of; finding a safe place to undress, detecting a decent source of water, making sure the heat is acquarible. Whether the act is in wilderness or in a city, these essential processes of “the act” stayed the same, but culture of it differed. This differentiations was due to climate, geography, socio-economy, architectural character, know-hows, local materials, socio-cultural layers, religion. All these differentiations reflected the character of each “bathing building”; ‘ turkish hamam’, ‘roman bath’, ‘finnish sauna’ or ‘russian banya’ etc.

Although these cultures created different spatial qualities for “cleaning self”, in essence, each buildings programmatic was shaped around “making self clean, being clean, becoming clean”, not just physically, but also mentally. Most of the time the effect of “making one clean and clear mentally” is unintended aspects of these buildings. Although the spatial quality is relatively bad in some cases, a building programme that builds itself around “water and heat” could be enough to achieve the mental clarity that leads to relaxation, in such a tactile environment, where we are, in a way, ‘vulnarable’. Our sense begins to emerge and communicate with the eye much more, rather letting “the eye” doing all the job in terms of communicating with outter world.

Fragments of Hamam What are the fragments of a “Hamam” that brings “water and heat” in the core that makes it such a tactile environment and how are the spaces shaped around it?

FINIKE Finike, the ancient Phoenix or Phoinix, Phineka, is a city on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. It is neighbour to Kas and Kemer, two of southern cities that is famous for tourism. Although it is surrounded by worldy famous touristic cities, it is relatively “undeveloped”. Although “the undevelopment” is minus points in terms of the capitalist world, it is an extraordinary case to reinterpret a southern city in Turkey, with lots of unique qualities, project new normals to the area, in contrary to what tourism in Kas and Kemer centers; money, luxury and imitation.

Finike is situated in a mountainous region where clear waters carried by valleys from ice cold mountain tops, to a plate where the orange trees are growing and greenhouses are situated . The fertile plate is appreciated by locals. And lots of small businesses emerged from the area that market the goods they collect from the fertile soil of Finike.

The Lycian Way The Lycian Way is a trail which used to connect ancient cities of Lycia. With over 500 km length it is one of the longest trail in southwestern Turkey; starting from Hisaronu, near Fethiye, to Konyaaltı from Antalya. Along the trail there are ancient ruins, blue bays, and so on. Nonetheless this trail has an interruption in Finike. The trail is not marked here or famous here. So could a piece of architecture create an attraction here for trekkers, nature lovers or “alternative tourists”.

neo-CARAVANSERAI The Lycian way was walked for 1000s of years, the nature that surrounds it mostly stayed the same and still it is being walked by 100s of locals and tourists everyear. Considering the touristic events around the southern coast of Turkey, this creates a strong alternative for tourism in Antalya region. Before the typical luxury hotel tourism take over Finike, it is possible to reflect new ways of cooperating with dynamics of the region, accomadating “alternative” tourist profiles, creating different architectural scenerios. And along with Hamam complex, an hostel like, modest accommadation should be a great fit for trekkers walk the long roads, and has multiple stations along the road where they take a breathe before keep on walking.

“Walking can provoke these excesses: surfeits of fatigue that make the mind wander, abundances of beauty that turn the soul over, excesses of drunkenness on the peaks, the high passes (where the body explodes). Walking ends by awakening this rebellious, archaic part of us: our appetites become rough and uncompromising, our impulses inspired. Because walking puts us on the vertical axis of life: swept along by the torrent that rushes just beneath us.” -Frederic Gros, A Philisophy of Walking

The unique texture and topography of Finike makes it hard to settle on the slopes but nonetheless city also grows to the rocky slopes. The overall city texture and building character continues without differing on the slopes, as it is in the flat seaside region. Only lots of stairs add to the spatial experience, and they are unique to Finike. This methodology tries to investigate possible ways of locating the building on a slope by different techniques; carving it or without interfering it, or superposing these building techniques.

INITIAL SKETCHES

Looking over Mediterranean and Taurus, accommadation does not have to be a closed.

The project site has a solid rock ground which displays a great texture when exposed, digged.
