WOMEN IN ART

I took over the running of Hampstead’s Zebra One Gallery 15 years ago. I quickly set about putting my own stamp on it, turning it into one of the Capital’s leaders in the sale and dealings of art, from original works to prints and photography. The gallery has been there since 1976 and I’m proud to have been part of making it so very special. Being a woman in such a male dominated industry for so long was tough, and this is why I’m now doing what I’m doing with Women in Art – redressing the balance!

Women’s art is often overlooked and undervalued – and the statistics are bleak: in a recent study that looked at the prices of 5,000 paintings sold at auction globally, it was found that for every £1 a male artist earns for his work, a woman artist earns just 10p. A recent analysis of major US art museums found that just 13 per cent of artists featured were women. And according to the National Museum of Women in the Arts, 51 per cent of visual artists today are women, but when it comes to exhibitions and gallery representation, the numbers tell a different story. In London, 78 per cent of the galleries represent more men than women, while only five per cent represent an equal number of male and female artists.

Women in Art’s former MD Sue Ecclestone started it as a very local art prize, and it grew to become one of the biggest. It is so wonderful that we now have support from the likes of Dame Emma Thompson, as she is such an inspiration to women. The aim of Women in Art is to support, mentor and promote female artists, giving them a voice and a platform. We will be featuring information and resources for women artists, interviews with women artists, studio visits, articles on the history of women in art, and showcasing the work of up-and-coming talent with our partnering social media platform, Love London Gallery. We hope to inspire and empower not just our generation of female artists but the next generation, too. We also recognise that the lack of representation extends beyond gender, and we will strive to feature artists from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds as well.

Going forward, we’ll be looking for that unknown talent, whilst supporting each other, which is fabulous. We need to be focusing on new talent coming through, helping with mentoring, and with emerging exhibitions and prizes showcasing the unknowns… That’s how we can all really make a difference. SETTING THE STAGE

Georgia Tennant talks making Staged relevant in a post-pandemic world, the unnerving reality of discovering that people were copying her interior design choices, and staying true to herself while balancing parenthood and work

The first Covid lockdown was not a great time to be an actor, or in fact anything in the creative arts. With theatres locked and productions shut down, people were forced to push their creativity further to come up with new ways to earn a living and deliver to their audience – from documentaries shot on smartphones to remotely directed mini-dramas. It was in these first confusing pandemic days that Staged was conceived. Created by Simon Evans and Phin Glynn and featuring David Tennant and Michael Sheen and their partners Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg, the ‘is it scripted, isn’t it?’ (answer: it is, mostly) comedy saw the actors play fictionalised versions of themselves as they tried to rehearse a play over Zoom calls during lockdown. It was so successful that a second series was released a year later, ironically just as the then prime minister was announcing another lockdown. And now the third and final series is about to launch on the BBC, having premiered on BritBox late last year.

“It has always felt like a three-parter, this whole experience,” Georgia tells me when we sit down to talk about how the new series moves beyond lockdown. “But I think we definitely weren’t going to do it if we couldn’t come up with a concept that worked as well, because what you don’t want to do is have two really successful seasons and then have a sort of damp squib for your end. We would much prefer to have not done it and gone out on a high. There was quite a lot of thought about what that could be, and various ideas were batted around, and then one day we just landed upon this idea. And at that point, everyone just went: ‘Oh, that’s it. That’s the thing we have to do’. So, this series is about coming out the other side of a traumatic experience and figuring out who you are now.”

Interestingly, the lack of ideas wasn’t the only thing standing in the way of this third and final outing for Staged. “The first part was very easy, because everyone was stuck in their houses,” Georgia explains. “So, availability was, you know, it was there on a plate. Season two was slightly more tricky, but still people weren’t working in the way that they had been working prior to the pandemic. So, it was still quite easy, but actually, by the time we did the third one, people had gone back to their lives and so trying to get people in the same place, even the core six of us, it was really difficult to do, and we only really had a period of about three weeks in which to film it.” The availability issue was felt more acutely this time around because for the first time, certain scenes required everybody to be together physically. Though this was a happy problem to have, Georgia insists. “It was lovely to actually spend time in the room with the people that you have

spent so much time with for the last few years,” she tells me. “Because you get to know people very well, and yet you realise you don’t know them in 3D. Which is quite a weird concept!”

Times might have changed, but the latest series was largely shot and produced in the same way as the first two. “We’ve got a very small core creative crew and it’s still mostly on our iPhones and our computers,” Georgia explains. “We had two days where we got a man with an actual camera in, and that felt very weird because that’s not an experience we’ve ever had before. So, in order to make it comfortable, we got a friend of ours, who also happens to be a photographer and a cameraman, and so it still felt very in-house and very homemade, which I think is important.”

Though the storylines might be fictional, the sets have always been the couples’ own homes, I wonder how the Tennants felt about revealing theirs to viewers. “We tried not to show too much…” Georgia admits. “Michael and Anna were much more successful than us because they only ever showed a very small portion of their kitchen throughout the entire thing. I don’t know how they managed to do that; they were very clever. Maybe because we just have more people in the house [the couple live with their five children], and therefore we just had to use whatever room was available to us at that moment, we did end up showing more than, certainly I’d anticipated us showing. But actually, it’s been interesting, because there’s been a couple of people who have worked on the show who had never been to our house during the first two seasons, and then in the course of season three did come, and obviously it’s not what they thought it was. So, I think we managed, while seemingly showing quite a lot of it, in fact to not show the real essence of the house. There was one particular corner that we ended up showing quite a lot, and people started wallpapering their houses in the same way. I felt like, I can’t keep seeing that bit of my house on Twitter. It was starting to unnerve me, so I re-wallpapered…” she laughs. “Originally, we only had what we had to work with. We had no hair and make up, no costume. No set design, no lighting. So, it was very much like, how can we make this scene work, rather than what are we going to be happy showing?” She concludes.

I’m interested in how that lack of hair and make up made Georgia feel. “I loved it,” she exclaims. “I mean, you know, listen, one of my favourite parts of any filming job is in the make up chair, but there was something quite freeing about going: ‘There is nothing I can do about this situation’. At that point everyone was locked in their houses and presumably not looking their best, so you don’t want to be watching a TV show where somebody is, because that’s not going to be relatable or fun. So, I thought well,

this is the opportunity to not really care about any of that. Turns out I have very much continued that in my real life. Freeing, isn’t it?” She grins.

And how was it working with David again? “I really, really enjoy it. I mean, he’s the only person I ever really want to spend any time with, so the idea of getting to work with him….” she smiles. “I mean, I had the best time. I think maybe I didn’t know that I was going to. He’s such a great asset, he’s really supportive of me whilst in no way being patronising, which is all I look for really in a human being: nice and supportive. And yeah, it just felt like a very safe space, and I feel like it worked better than I thought it was going to. So, we certainly wouldn’t rule out working together again in the future.”

Georgia and David first met after appearing on Doctor Who together in a 2008 episode called The Doctor’s Daughter. Georgia’s father is Peter Davison – another former Doctor Who star. Her mother is actress Sandra Dickinson. “I was good friends with a girl at school whose dad also played the Doctor,” she reveals, when I ask whether her parents’ work influenced her decision to pursue a career in drama. “So, the idea that my dad had played the Doctor on the telly was not a unique thing. I sort of assumed that there were quite a lot of us who had that experience, because slightly oddly, one of my best friends had. I didn’t ever grow up thinking that what my parents did was unique, or particularly interesting, but I did go: ‘That looks fun’. And I liked doing drama at school. So, by the time I realised there were other options, I had kind of already decided what I was going to do. Although as I’ve got older, I have started to do other things as well, to kind of scratch some other itches that I have got. But they are all sort of creative, I suspect because I probably was always going to do this.”

Is it a career she would recommend? “I would say it’s a wonderful job when people let you do it,” she nods. “But be prepared for there to be large swathes of time where people don’t let you do it, and therefore have other things to fall back on. But also, have people around to support you, because you have to be pretty hardened to rejection. You have to be pretty confident in yourself as a person when people are constantly telling you that you’re not right. ‘You don’t look right’. ‘This one’s not for you’. ‘Maybe the next one’. So have things in your life that make you feel confident outside of your work, I would say.”

On that note, are there any particularly toe-curling audition experiences she’d like to share? “Oh my God! I’ve put those stories in some box on a shelf in my brain never to be opened again,” she laughs. “I’ve had awful, awful auditions. I had one that was so bad, I knew I was wrong for it, and I should have left before I’d gone into the room. I just remember fixating on the director’s shoes throughout this audition, and thinking, this person’s shoes are so much cooler than I have ever been, I shouldn’t be in this room – and as I looked up halfway through reading this scene, I stopped and he went ‘You want to leave, don’t you?’, and I went, ‘Yes’, and he said, ‘It was really nice to meet you.’ I was like, this is so awful, this is only going to end with me humiliating myself. That was the only time I have walked out of a meeting midway through, but I’m really glad I did. There’s something to be said for self-tapes!”

Like many actors, as she has gained experience, Georgia has started to take on other creative roles, in particular acting as a producer on a number of projects including Staged. I wonder which of the roles she prefers. “I really like the fact that I’ve got both of them, because I think one gives you absolutely no control, and one gives you quite a lot of control,” she tells me. “And to be able to do both of those things and still create art at the end

of it is a privilege. Producing wasn’t something that I thought I was going to be good at when I was younger, and it wasn’t until I had worked with a lot of producers that I sort of thought, no, I suppose there’s a bit of me that could do that. And then I met the right person who wanted to give me a shot at it. I feel like I have earned the producing a bit more; it is not necessarily something you are born good at. I feel like I’ve learned quite a lot doing that. I have also started writing quite a lot, which again, I think is a similar thing. It’s a sort of skill that I’m not naturally wonderful at, and I’ve had to work hard to get better.”

Is there anything particular Georgia is writing currently?

“I am developing a comedy about… I don’t think I should say what it’s about, I might get in trouble,” she laughs. “I’m developing a comedy with Relish TV at the moment, and I’m having a lovely time. I’m writing with my friend Daisy Aitkens. I produced her first film, You, Me and Him and she is one of my best mates. So, I get to work with my best mate, which is a dream.”

Georgia also tells me that she is about to begin filming for season two of The Horne Section. Series one was, she tells me, a lot of fun, so this is something she is very much looking forward to. “They are a group of best mates from school,” she explains. “And that’s absolutely how it feels. And you know, it doesn’t feel like they were the cool kids at school. It feels like they were the sort of slightly nerdy, arty ones. The ones that you actually, ultimately want to be friends with. To be able to kind of hang out with them for six weeks and be part of that gang – yeah, that’s pretty cool.”

With writing and acting and everything else, I wonder how on earth she manages to be such a hands-on parent to so many kids. “I do my best; that is all I can do,” she shrugs. “I mean, there are days where I’m like ‘I’ve got this, I’m totally nailing it’. And then the next day, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve had so many children! What am I doing? Who am I? I can’t do this. They hate me!’. It’s just about remembering the days where you don’t feel like that, and sort of going ‘Probably, on the whole, I’m doing okay’. But there’s definitely no magic answer to the ‘How do you have it all?’ question. The answer is you just try your best and hope in that process that you don’t lose yourself, I think.”

arrangements for bridesmaids, groomsmen and the core bridal party. But there are no hard and fast rules – this is your day. “Fresh flowers can be expensive, but it is possible to be budget conscious. Focus on some key areas; flowers don’t need to be everywhere,” Michal suggests. Categorising each element as either a ‘must have’ or a ‘nice to have’ will be helpful in making these decisions.

And what of the flowers themselves? “We find that roses, peonies and dahlia are ever popular; we like to arrange them in an English country garden style with lots of foliage and fillers, not just blooms,” Anoma tells us. “We try to encourage wedding flowers in other colours but white is still very on trend.” Michal agrees that roses, a traditional symbol of love, are a classic for weddings, thanks to their colours and scent, but he has some more unusual suggestions. “I love butterfly ranunculus because it’s very light, textured, and long-lasting, with a porcelain finish. And sweet peas give a sense of fun, with soft undertones and a subtle fragrance.” Both florists agree that choosing something seasonal is a good idea where possible –the flowers will almost certainly look better and cost less.

Spending a fortune frantically covering up your silvery strands? Stop right now – grey might just be one of 2023’s hottest hair colours, top stylist Michael Douglas tells us. “Grey and silver hair has been one of the most talked-about colour trends of the past year, with more people wanting to embrace their natural greys, and even more people wanting to fake it till they make it with the help of hair dyes and tints,” he reveals.

Those embracing the trend and showing us just how stylish silver can be include celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis, Dawn French and Helen Mirren, and you don’t have to look far on social media to find thousands of other women who are choosing to go grey gracefully, too – many of them having made the decision not to go back to regular dye jobs post pandemic (you could call that a silver lining).

Once such influencer is Silvina Neder, who moved to London in her late forties, and started working such long hours that she struggled to dedicate the time to her previous hair colouring regime. “My hair grew out, and I found that I really liked it, because it was a beautiful silvery white colour, and super healthy looking,” she recalls. Perhaps equally surprising was the reaction she received from colleagues and friends, who told her how much they liked the new look, too. “I love that in London you are totally free to wear what you want, be who you want, look how you want,” she says. Inspired by this free-spirited approach to personal appearance, Silvina decided to properly embrace her natural colour, going for a dramatic chop to enhance the new shade. She started to document the journey through her Instagram account (@silvinaneder) a year later. She now has more than 18,000 followers and has forged a successful career as a silverhaired model. “I had always wondered why men with grey hair, like George Clooney, were seen as handsome, whereas women were seen as old. Why? People look old because of their clothing, attitude, posture… not their hair! Embracing my greys means saying to the world, I am this age, and I am loving it. I am lucky to be where I am,” she exclaims.

Her positivity is infectious, so it is perhaps unsurprising that her Instagram account has amassed quite so many followers. She recalls the start of the pandemic, when her followers jumped by around 6,000 in a single month. “People couldn’t go to their hairdressers, and they started to think about maybe embracing their natural colour. I got so many messages at that time saying, ‘Thank you for giving me the courage to go grey’, or ‘Thank you for showing me that it is possible to look good with grey hair’.

It was so rewarding being in a position to encourage women to embrace natural ageing and appreciate their natural beauty.”

She is so passionate about this that she has developed her own haircare line, targeted specifically at grey hair. She describes trying endless products over the course of her grey journey and being unable to find anything that worked well for her.

“I spent a lot of money, but I couldn’t find any products I liked; I tried them all, but nothing was able to hydrate my hair, or stop it from looking brassy. Women would ask me, ‘Silvina, what do you use?’ But I didn’t feel I could recommend anything. So, I started researching, looking into creating my own products.”

Meet Dr Sharon Silberstein, the founder of a Hampstead-based clinic that is changing the lives of mothers and babies

Tell us about your clinic?

At Dr Silberstein Clinic we specialise in infant feeding and tongue tie assessments and treatments, but we also offer other services for ante- and postnatal parents, such as postnatal gynaecological checks, paediatric and women’s health osteopathy, speech and language therapy and more. We also have many items for sale to cover the needs for postnatal mums and their babies, such as a various breast pumps and nipple shields.

Why did you want to work with women, specifically helping them with breast-feeding?

Before I had children I started specialising in Obstetrics and Gynaecology; I was always drawn to working with mothers and babies. After having my own four children, I noticed how little knowledge and evidence-based care there was available amongst health care professionals and how many mixed messages mums received about feeding their babies. I wanted to do something to put this right.

What are the best bits of your job?

The moment I live for in my day is when I help a mum to feed without pain. Similarly, it is very rewarding to help relieve engorgement, allowing mums to walk out of my practice without any pain. It is magical when a baby who hasn’t been able to breastfeed latches on for the first time with my help. Better still is when mums get in contact a year or more after they have seen me and tell me that they are still breastfeeding because I was able to help them. There is also great joy in helping mums to breastfeed their children when they have not given birth to them –those who may have adopted a baby or have used a surrogate mother.

What’s one piece of advice you can give to new or expectant mums?

The best advice I can give mums is that the more knowledge they have about breastfeeding before having a baby, the easier they will find it. As part of my work, I see mums for antenatal breastfeeding sessions, where we talk about what is normal, what is expected and what is outside of the norm. Many mums do not have support from their own mums or families, and they are given bad advice – to feed their babies less frequently, to let baby cry themselves to sleep, or to carry them less. I believe that mums should have access to evidence-based information, especially around infant feeding. Finding an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) will be the best investment any mum could make in those early days.

What’s next?

I am hoping to grow my clinic, offering more services and providing more small, friendly groups, and I am bringing even more professionals to the clinic who can offer their services to my clients.

Richard Corrigan’s Virginia Park Lodge Lobster Cocktail

To celebrate this month’s opening of The Portrait, the celebrated chef shares a recipe for summer soirées

The National Portrait Gallery will finally reopen its doors at the end of this month, following a three-year closure and a £35.5 million redevelopment project, and it will be marking this new era with a stylish rebrand: ‘a fresh visual identity to better reflect its role as a gallery that is of people, for people, telling the story of Britain’s past, present and future through portraits.’

The programme for its first year includes Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm (28 June – 1 October), an exhibition of never-before-seen photography from the Beatles legend; and David Hockney: Drawing from Life (2 November 2023 – 21 January 2024), the celebrated exhibition that was cut short when the gallery was closed by the pandemic in 2020.

And it’s not just the art that promises something a little special – a variety of exciting new hospitality partnerships will see delicious food and drink being served in uniquely designed spaces. Audrey Green by Daisy Green Collection will offer speciality coffees plus delicious cakes and light lunches from a ground floor café that will also be accessible from the street, and brunches and exhibition themed afternoon teas from the vaults of the gallery. This space will transform into a buzzing bar come the evening.

Meanwhile celebrated chef Richard Corrigan will be at the helm of The Portrait, a destination restaurant and bar set across the top floor of the gallery within an intimate space offering panoramic views that take in Trafalgar Square

and the Houses of Parliament. The menus will showcase Richard’s classic culinary ethos and focus on British and Irish ingredients. He tells us: “I’ve long been a lover of the National Portrait Gallery and the exquisite art that hangs here. Any chef would give their right arm to cook in such a historic building, so for me to be opening a restaurant, under the same roof as all this world class art, well, it’s truly a privilege.”

Here, he treats us to a taste of what diners might be tucking into when the restaurant opens its doors. “Nothing screams summer more than fresh seafood, and this luxury take on a classic shellfish cocktail is the perfect garden party appetiser to prepare ahead of time, so you can spend time with your guests and a glass of crisp wine in the sunshine,” he says.

INGREDIENTS

1 whole lobster (600g approx) 1 head crunchy lettuce 1 cucumber 1 lemon

For the cocktail sauce

200g mayonnaise (preferably homemade) 1 tbsp horseradish cream 1 tbsp ketchup 1 tbsp sherry 1 tsp Worcestershire saucee ½ tsp Tabasco

METHOD

1. Bring a large pot of heavily salted water to a simmer and gently place the lobster into it.

2. Simmer for 10 minutes and immediately remove into ice cold water.

3. Remove the tail and claws from the lobster.

4. Extract the meat from the tail by firmly pressing with your hand until the shell cracks, allowing easy removal.

5. Crack the claws and use a pick to remove any remaining lobster meat.

6. Mix all ingredients for the cocktail sauce together until combined.

7. Shred lettuce, peel and de-seed the cucumber and slice into chunks.

8. Assemble the lettuce and cucumber in serving dishes, slice the lobster and place on top.

There has been much discussion between my partner and I about whether to take our dog, Boomer, on holiday with us. We love the idea of an adventure as a three, but there is undeniable appeal in the thought of a couple of days of lie-ins and mud free clothing… In the end, the puppy eyes win, Boomer’s tail whipping with excitement as he manages to wrangle himself on yet another staycation.

We are spending a few days in Bath, on the banks of the River Avon. Famous for its Roman baths, Georgian architecture and World Heritage status, the city is also known for its creative, laid-back attitude, diverse cultural offering and foodie scene. Small enough to explore on foot, there is nonetheless more than enough to keep us busy.

The downsides to being a dog parent are few, though having a four-legged friend in tow often means having to forgo certain luxuries. Luckily for us, not this time; we are staying at The Francis, a delightful Grade I listed, dog-friendly boutique hotel. Part of the Sutton Hotel Collection, the handsome hotel has 98 thoughtfully designed bedrooms spread over seven 18th century limestone-clad Regency townhouses right on the edge of Queen Square Lawn, one of the prettiest Georgian garden squares in the heart of the city.

The hotel is named after Solomon Francis, who began hosting paying guests in one of the townhouses back in 1858. The air raids of the Second World War led to significant bomb damage, though you’d be hard pressed to guess, so meticulous was the subsequent restoration. The Georgian splendour has been given a modern twist, with bold, maximalist interiors schemes that embrace the original features and antique furnishings.

The greeting is warm and sincere – it is clear that dogs are loved here, not merely tolerated. After the obligatory treats and cuddles, we are led upstairs to our room on the second floor. Passing between the different townhouses in the corridors, blue plaques on the walls indicate distinguished past residents – notably John Wood the Elder, the architect responsible for the creation of Queen Square.

Our room overlooks the peaceful square. Elegant and charming, it is decorated in a palette of cool blues and greys, with bold nautical stripes in the en suite. It is a good size, with a sumptuous looking bed and comfortable seating area.

Boomer has been treated to his own doggie comfort package, which includes a super soft bed and blanket. He is clearly in his element, so we decide to leave him to make himself at home in the room while we steal a sunny hour on the hotel’s open-air terrace – a mini oasis in the heart of the city, it is the perfect spot for an al fresco drink.

As the warm sun dips below the buildings and the light fades from the sky, with stomachs beginning to rumble, we make our way inside to Boho Marché, the hotel’s French-Moroccan restaurant.

It is 8pm on a Sunday, but the restaurant is buzzing – this is clearly a popular spot. Large, dimly-lit paper lampshades hang from the ceiling, bold floral wallpaper adorns the pinkhued, crumbling stone walls, and a beautiful tangle of leafy green plants blooms over the bar, giving the space a very bohemian vibe.

With an emphasis on hand-sourced produce, Boho Marché offers an eclectic twist on gourmet dining. The starters are perfect for sharing, a highlight being the homemade Barbari bread and smoky hummus. For mains, no detail has been left unconsidered: the tagine is complemented by the most delicate Middle Eastern flavours, and tender sirloin steak is paired perfectly with a vibrant chimichurri. We end the evening with a couple of cocktails in the hotel’s welcoming No.10 bar, but not before popping up to invite Boomer down to join us. Though back in the room, we discover he has eschewed his dog bed and is curled up tightly in the comfort of our freshly laundered sheets, so sleepy that he barely notices us creep back out.

Breakfast the next morning is as delicious as dinner, and sets us up for a joyful morning spent discovering Bath’s beautiful history. While we could happily have spent another day or two exploring the boutiques and heading out to walk in the hills on the edges of the city, we have to head back to London after lunch, but The Francis Hotel’s charm is such that we suspect we’ll be back very soon.

From its privileged position in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, Palazzo Cheto provides the ultimate luxury getaway in one of Italy’s most coveted areas

It’s early morning in Tuscany, central Italy; the air is fresh, and the world feels newborn. Across a sea of sunflowers, in the distance, the small medieval town of Siena emerges through the morning haze, tiny as a toy town. I am staying at Palazzo Cheto, a luxurious private villa set in the middle of the rolling Tuscan countryside – it is an astonishing place to wake up.

For as long as I can remember, Tuscany has been on my travel bucket list, so, when the opportunity to visit cropped up, I needed little persuasion. Though it feels a world away from London, our journey could not have been easier –a two-hour flight to Pisa, where a private transfer waited to whisk us off on our exquisite Tuscan adventure. The Palazzo is a couple of hours south of Pisa, but the scenery is breath-taking, with winding roads revealing sunkissed historic towns

at every turn. I gaze out of the window in wonder, unable to believe my luck.

On arrival at Palazzo Cheto we are wowed by the beautiful sight of the property’s ancient olive groves silhouetted in the slowly fading daylight. The villa, a former 13th century monastery hewn from local stone blends in perfectly with its surroundings; the traditional dwelling sits in a ravishing spot amongst leafy landscaped gardens. Dark copper edged windows and doors are framed by traditional wooden shutters, and whether at the front or the back of house, all promise jawdropping views of this bucolic bliss.

The villa’s owner, Ennio Polito is here to greet us, and shows us across a cobbled courtyard and through the thick wooden front doors. Inside, an arched stone corridor lined with paintings and characterful antique furnishings leads to the

inner stone courtyard. In the welcoming kitchen we are introduced to the property’s in-house chef Christina and her husband Antonio, who will be looking after us like members of the family during our stay. Eating well is one of the big comforts here, and perhaps one of the surprises, too. No matter how familiar you think you are with authentic Italian food, Christina is sure to serve up some delicious dish you’ve never heard of.

A long marble topped island lies at the heart of the kitchen, which is complete with crackling fire, hanging copper pots, and baskets brimming over with foraged mushrooms and other fresh fruits. Continuing our tour of the house we pass through the dining room and into the spacious living room, which is equipped with a large open fireplace, soft slouchy furnishings, and a pool table.

The villa has been extensively and sensitively renovated to provide luxurious accommodation which is spread over two floors and across two buildings. Exposed rustic wooden ceilings contrast with Mediterranean coloured walls, terracotta tiled floors with sleek marble surfaces. From the main living areas through to each of the individually decorated and air-conditioned bedrooms, the aesthetic is homely and welcoming. There’s enough space to sleep 18, with bedrooms located between the two buildings – seven up the twisting stone staircases in the main villa and two in the guest house, which offer the same luxurious accommodation, but with the benefit of a little more seclusion. Just a short walk from the main house, down a winding pathway, this is also where you’ll find the villa’s gym and sauna. The apartment style living space of the guest house opens onto a large, paved terrace that affords unparalleled views of the Tuscan countryside.

Out back, immaculate gardens lead down to a swimming pool that is heated by solar power. There’s arguably no better place to while away a warm summer’s afternoon, snoozing in one of the gently swaying hammocks or bobbing around in the pool, which is perfectly framed by flowers, chattering wildlife, and cypress trees.

The vast garden is worth a visit in its own right; Ennio offers guests tranquil guided nature walks through the wooded estate surrounding the villa, foraging for truffles, and picking porcini mushrooms to be prepared and enjoyed later, farm-to-table style. To complement these, and the other fresh, seasonal ingredients showcased on Christina’s menu, are delicious organic wines, all supplied by local producers. Palazzo Cheto is all about inclusiveness and guests are encouraged to get involved with as much or as little of the estate’s day-to-day running as they wish.

The shaded gazebo in the garden offers al fresco dining with views across acres of greenery. It is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down while sipping on a glass or two of the finest Italian wine. Or to enjoy a pizza al fresco, fresh out of the stone oven, while marvelling at the bright starry skies, unmarred by light pollution.

We soon discover that time spent at Palazzo Cheto offers an opportunity to reconnect with what’s important. To slow down and to enjoy the beauty of nature with the people you love. And because the owners are committed to the villa’s green status, working with what the natural world has given them and supporting local producers, guests can relax in the knowledge that their impact on the planet has been considered.

When your child starts school in Reception aged four or five it can feel overwhelming. It marks a new chapter in a family’s life as your child embarks on their formal education and the path to a fantastic future, but it can feel sad as the close bond with your child loosens a little more as they grow and go out into the world.

“There are some simple things families can do to prepare,” says Nadia, “that will make the experience positive and help your child settle into their new environment quickly.”

Keep talking

Your child will take their cues from you, so talking calmly, positively and realistically about school will be a huge help. Let them know that school will be different from nursery, there will probably be more children there, they will see older children, maybe siblings, and new adults too.

Make it familiar

“Try to integrate school into your routine and make it as familiar as possible before you even start,” suggests Nadia. “Point it out as you go past

and practise the school run and do plan ahead. Do you have transport options you can explore – does walking or scooting work for your family, is there a place to leave your scooter?” The aim is to iron out any issues before the start of school and reduce any anxiety and stress around the new routine.

Build independence

Practise those skills that young children will need to get ready for school and during the day; can they use cutlery and put on their coat? Socks can be tricky, and can they put their shoes on the right way? Help your child identify those feelings that mean they are thirsty, hungry or need the loo and let them know that it is OK to ask for help. Make sure your child knows what they will wear every day and practice getting dressed in the new clothes. “Be sure to name everything! It is such a simple thing that goes a really long way to help children look after their belongings and reduces their anxiety in case anything goes astray during the school day,” explains Nadia.

The big day

“It is completely natural to feel emotional on the first day of school and in my experience, it is almost always the parents that feel it most,” says Nadia. “Keep your goodbye brief and reassuring and leave your child with a smile. At the end of the day

Starting school is exhausting for young children as they play and learn and practise new social skills, so, plan for plenty of downtime at the end of the day in the first few weeks and let your child unwind. “Often, parents find that children do not share a great deal about their day, but they will be processing everything and may need extra cuddles and reassurance at the end of a busy day,” says Nadia.

An outdoor pool is a dream for most homeowners, but in the Capital, where space is at a premium, it is perhaps the ultimate luxury. Where the best in architecture and landscaping meet, there’s inspiration aplenty in these recently realised projects

Whether you plump for a pool that’s minimalist and ultra-modern, or one that respectfully stays within the bounds of your period property’s aesthetic, an outdoor pool can be visually stunning. Today’s most innovative designs include infinity pools that seemingly blend into the horizon, and sleek indoor/outdoor pools with garden access that can be enjoyed year-round. But before you take the plunge on the design front, it’s worth thinking about functionality. As with any major addition or large-scale home renovation, day-to-day lifestyle is key.

There’s always going to be restrictions on space, too, no matter how long or wide your garden is, so consider how much of your lawn you’re willing to give up, and whether you’ll do a larger pool justice with regular use. For one fitness-oriented Octagon Bespoke customer, only a professional-standard pool would do.

“A recent request from a client has been for a 50m Olympic swimming pool,” reveals director Laurence Holder. “Consisting of a few lanes for perfecting each stroke, this is an ideal practical fitness option, should you have the space. This recent Bespoke instruction also included a zinc plunge pool at one end, mainly for the health benefits associated with the cold water. Inspired by a hotel in the Alps, the client returned from a trip with full knowledge of the impact of cold plunges and immediately added this to their leisure must-haves.”

For us less sporty types, and for family households in particular, a fun, splash about pool is the dream. You’ll need to work carefully with your design team on the best position and placement of your outdoor pool, taking into account your garden’s aspect and which areas enjoy the most uninterrupted sunshine in the summer months; do you want an entertainmentfocused pool you can dip in and out of, one that

sits within a dedicated patio area complete with an outdoor dining set-up? Or would you rather a tranquil, mixed height swimming pool come water feature that’s tucked away from the main property and blends beautifully with tall planting and its adjoining landscape?

Whichever aesthetic you go for, your pool’s surround is all-important. The Grade II listed medieval property below has been given a chic outdoor update. Designed by David Loy of Your Garden Design, the pool is complete with pale stone patio tiles that both complement the historic building and sympathetically connect the entire outside space. “The swimming pool,

barbecue and bar area have been given a cool, contemporary look with our Buscot limestone in an etched finish, says Hamish Smith, creative director of luxury stone company Artisans of Devizes. “As well as designing the pool surround and pathways, David has also beautifully landscaped the entire garden with carefully selected flowers and shrubs to complement the traditional charm of this characterful home.”

Andy Carr, design and commercial director at Guncast offers expert advice on what we need to consider when envisaging our outdoor pool –and how we can make it a reality. “It is important to think about how you plan to use the pool,” he says. “Would you prefer the idea of leaving the house to head to your outdoor oasis at the end of the garden, or rather have facilities as part of your open-plan living space that are easy to dip into every day?”

Once you’ve decided on your outdoor pool’s design, its placement, and importantly, its functionality, it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty. But this is no small project, and it would be easy to feel overwhelmed at the sight of diggers ripping up your previously manicured lawn. This is why you should seek out a design team with a comprehensive approach, great communication, and experience in delivering dreamy outdoor pools of all shapes and sizes. Andy explains the process: “After the design is finalised, installing the pool itself usually takes about three to four months, but this of course depends on specification, materials and size. Hilton Carter

Anyone familiar with biophilic design will know Hilton Carter’s work. The interior stylist’s 2020 book, Wild Interiors inspired us all to go over to the green side with 12 beautifully presented plant-filled properties. His new book, Living Wild, explores the multiple ways we can style our home with plants – and cultivate happiness along the way. Just published, and similarly filled with lush inspiration, the hardback features his own house, a 1914-built American colonial in Baltimore, Maryland. Hilton shares the property with his wife Fiona, daughter Holland, the family dog Charlie – and naturally, a truckload of houseplants.

Before we step inside, I’m intrigued to know what life’s like in Baltimore, what’s on Hilton’s doorstep? “For me Baltimore is HOME,” he enthuses. “It’s where I was born and raised. While I’ve lived in Los Angeles and New Orleans, Baltimore is life for me. It has an amazing culture, vibe, and the people are down to earth. My favourite spots around town to scratch my creative itch are Baltimore Photo Space, Good Neighbor, Rawlings Conservatory and Clavel Mezcaleria.” I wonder what drew him to this five-bed abode in particular. “It was all about light,” he reveals. “Where the house sat in relation to where the light would come in. Character is everything. We loved the silhouette of our home. It’s amazing to see photos from when it was first built and how it looks now. There aren’t many changes to the exterior. It had great bones but because it was built over 100 years ago, the interior needed to be renovated. We also wanted a home that was surrounded by greenery but was still located in the city. What we didn’t want was something in a busy or heavy traffic area, or that didn’t feel safe.”

While not entirely new, the concept of biophilia sparked the public consciousness in recent times. Integrating natural elements into the built environment to foster a deep connection with nature appealed to so many homemakers, especially with suffocating lockdowns to navigate. Social media, too, played its part with dedicated “houseplant parents” outdoing each other on Instagram with abundantly leafy living rooms to show off. But far from being a fleeting trend, for the giftedly green-fingered, like Hilton, it has become a way of life. “The process of plant care is therapeutic but just being around natural elements can make us feel more calm, creative, and alive,” the stylist says. “We all seek that connection with nature, so seeing wood grain, green foliage, stone, etc, brings us back to what’s important: happiness and the living things around us. I think people are starting to understand the power and benefits of adding plants, so they are looking at it with the same thoughtfulness that they use when bringing décor into the home.”

I’m keen to discover how it all started for Hilton. “My collection is a mix of tropicals and desert plants,” he explains. “It all started for me in 2014 with a fiddle leaf fig I named Frank. I now have over 350 plants in my collection.”

Hilton describes his interiors style as Modern Lush. “It’s a touch of modern design, Scandinavian with Mexican tones, and then styled with greenery,”

he says. Naturally, the houseplants bring a calming, laid-back vibe, but Hilton’s furniture choices do exactly that, too, with a palette of calming neutrals and layers of texturally rich natural materials, from grainy wood, to tufted wool, to buttery tan leather – the more timeworn the better:

“I love the leather accent chairs in the sunroom,” he says. “They are just so comfortable and the more wear they get the better they become. To know me is to know I love anything with patina. That’s a sign of a life lived! I also love mixing materials, so give me all the textures and modern designs. I like when you can bring something unexpected into the mix and make a statement. When it comes to lighting, the cactus lamp in the sunroom is clutch! It’s the perfect piece of decor to surround with the plants – its hard materials next to the soft foliage of the plants.” The sunroom is the perfect indoor/outdoor space. Hilton tells me it’s his favourite spot in the house because of this seamless connection to the garden. “It has the most natural light of any room in the home and the accordion door that can fold back to extend the sunroom onto the deck is just so nice.”

Large-scale contemporary artworks bring a splash of colour to the property’s bright white walls, and one of Hilton’s favourite pieces sits above the cool stone dining table. “It’s by artist Jose Mertz and it just has so much energy and life to it,” he says. “It always feels like it’s in constant motion, as if the brush strokes are still being applied daily.” Indeed, there’s energy and life in every corner of this house, and it’s impossible not to walk away with a sense of wellbeing and a connectedness to nature. This is a property that invites you to breathe.

I wonder how Hilton would describe the new book, and how it might inspire readers to go green, too. “Living Wild is everything plants and design. It’s as if I’ve shared my diary for how I go about plant styling and how I think about applying colour, texture and shape, so that a space can truly come to life. While readers will need to have an understanding of plant care first, before they can participate in the fun of styling with plants, once they have that down, I hope through the spaces and tips that I share in the book, they can be inspired to live, wild!”

As we celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June, one north London Pre-Prep School shares its powerful approach to developing the next generation of sustainable thinkers

“Environmental studies should not be limited to the curriculum but should permeate extracurricular and enrichment activities too,” says the Head of NBH Pre-Prep School.

“We go beyond the books at North Bridge House Pre-Prep and root children’s education in the environment itself, preparing our children to become not just global citizens, but agents of change,” says Michelle Blaber, Head of North Bridge House Pre-Prep School in Hampstead.

To position sustainability at the centre of children’s thinking, NBH Pre-Prep has not only embedded environmental studies into the Early Years and Key Stage 1 curriculum, but into the children’s whole school experience – from STEM to Gardening Club, Forest School to fundraising.

“Children are immersed in a rich and varied academic and extra-curricular programme –complete with subject specialist teaching – from the outset of their education, and in taking this same holistic approach to entrenching environmental studies in the early years, we are connecting our young people with the world around them and encouraging life-based learning in every aspect of their academic and personal growth,” explains Michelle.

Environmental education allows children to apply their learning to the real world, engaging them in their studies and sparking a genuine curiosity for knowledge. It has been proven to enhance critical and creative thinking skills, thus boosting overall academic attainment, and NBH Pre-Prep children continue to exceed the national average for English and maths by 25 per cent and 30 per cent respectively, by the time they complete Year 2.

From Reception, NBH children are immersed in a wealth of outdoor learning opportunities which build their affinity with the natural world and promote their physical and mental wellbeing, addressing some of the commonplace issues we see in children today – such as obesity, attention deficit and mental health disorders – at the same time as opening their eyes to the climate crisis.

At Gardening Club, children have received their Level One Certificate of Achievement in the Royal Horticultural School Gardening Awards and are now working towards their Level Two award, learning about the life cycles of insects as they go and understanding how the changing of the climate affects the growing season. From thinking about sustainable food consumption and growing their own produce, to using a wormery to recycle waste from the school kitchen and produce a rich compost in which to grow their vegetables, the children are developing and practicing lifelong sustainable habits.

“The aim is for sustainable thinking to become second nature for our children and to inform their day-to-day decision making, problem-solving and creativity,” says Michelle, the Head of School.

NBH Pre-Prep has further embedded Forest School into the curriculum, making this child-centred learning experience not just an educational day out but a key tool in helping to develop concepts learnt in the classroom.

With over 17 years combined experience in interior design and high-end home renovation, this design duo offers clients a holistic, one-stop design and build service – and it is refreshingly affordable

How did you meet, and how did Aflux Designs come about?

S: It was a chance meeting on a night out, actually. We became friends when we realised we had a lot in common. It was friendship first, which explains our great partnership in the professional field.

A: At the time, Sara worked for a luxury high-end designer, and I was working for a property developer as a project manager. I thought there wasn’t really anything in the affordable luxury market – hence the name, AF-LUX. The mission statement was, and will always be, to offer a bespoke service that is fair, giving the client the best look for what they can afford. We started collaborating and doing projects for a few of my friends’ clients. We quickly cemented the brand, brought in builders (who we still work with), and it’s grown to become the amazing company it is today. My accounting and functional approach, paired with Sara’s creativity and luxury expertise, means our clients are getting the best of both worlds.

How would you sum up your design ethos?

S: Affordable luxury. We offer a bespoke service and provide a one-stop-shop for our clients, guiding them through their project from start to finish. It’s a very personal profession and client relationships are key.

A: Not only do we want to create a beautiful home, but we want to create something timeless in both look and function.

What can residential clients expect from an Aflux design?

S: Clients can expect transparency and trust. They are trusting us with their money and their home, so there is no ‘wrong’ answer when it comes to their wish list. We always try to manage expectations, but it’s also our responsibility to never say no to a challenge!

How do you work with clients to achieve their dream home?

A: The first step is that we work on a macro level – to understand their design inspiration, before moving onto their budget and timeline. With this in mind, we then work on top level plans, take them to showrooms, create design concepts and mood boards. It’s very important to really agree the overall design direction and ensure we are within or near their budget at an early stage. Then comes the fun part! We work on the detailed drawings, confirm suppliers and timelines, and turn it into reality. This is where the real hard work begins as it involves project management, dealing with suppliers and ensuring everything goes to plan. The main aim at this point is to deliver what we originally designed, with minimal variation in cost, time and most importantly, stress!

Can you tell me about the role of sustainability at Aflux Designs?

A: When designing plans and sourcing furniture, we aim to look for recyclable materials and pieces that the client won’t need to replace later. When choosing suppliers, we look for those that focus on sustainable practices and have good environmental records. We try to introduce more efficient heating methods and always focus on installing insulation where we can. Being as environmentally conscious as we can be in our design process is always on our list, subject to the budget, of course.

Can you describe some of your favourite projects so far?

A: We worked on some beautiful, brightly coloured houses in Notting Hill, which enabled us to be really creative in a tight space – with the final result being one of our best. We designed a bachelor pad on Harley Street, where we focused on contemporary and minimalist design, and we worked on a family cottage, which was a completely different challenge for us, and it meant being able to work in the countryside during the summer months.

What’s next for Aflux?

A: We have an amazing house refurbishment in Primose Hill with an extension that includes some great architectural design. We can’t wait to see the finished project as we’ve included so many different finishes in the space, from wood to concrete and plastering. It’s going to be stunning. We have also just taken on a large house in Chiswick, which will be our biggest project to date.

S: But size isn’t everything. I’m particularly excited about a studio space we’re working on in an art deco building in Sloane Square. We’re enjoying creating a multi-functional space and seeing how we can add touches of 1920s décor to this project. aflux.co.uk

Talented teachers who are highly experienced in their particular artistic field lead stimulating and engaging lessons, inspiring the children to explore their ‘real selves’ through a broad and creative arts curriculum.

The drama programme is at the core of the syllabus, with children exploring the power of role-play and performance from the age of 2 ½, when the children begin to attend weekly drama lessons, giving them licence to perform. Being in character and role-playing helps the children to build confidence and focus.

“Our yearly schedule of shows, plays and musicals showcase the best our little actors can deliver, our children are taught to be appreciative audience members, learning to be respectful and mindful of what it is like to be in role, delivering a part in a play or musical. This collective understanding of the norms of audience participation is a valuable skill to develop and in turn is vital in supporting our young actors to become confident performers,” Donal explains.

The yearly calendar includes an array of shows from the nursery production of Jack and the Beanstalk for the Christmas Nativity to the Shakespeare production at the artsdepot and the summer gala musical performed at Jacksons Lane Arts Centre.

The music and singing programme complements the drama offering with a commitment from SASGS to teach all children the violin as part of the music curriculum.

Termly piano, strings, drums and singing concerts are opportunities to celebrate the achievements of the school’s young musicians, but more than that, these occasions provide everybody with opportunities to perform.

The school’s violinists lead the Wednesday assembly, lending an orchestral feel to the morning events. There is an open invitation to parents to attend the tri-weekly morning assemblies which begin with whole-school singing. An array of folk, traditional, contemporary and spiritual song choices ensure that the children are confident to sing in many genres. “Everything from Katy Perry classics and West End musical numbers from Matilda and The Lion King, to Ode to Joy by Beethoven and traditional canons such as Dona Nobis Pacem are well known to the children,” Donal reveals.

‘Open mic’ opportunities occur at lunch time, with musicians awaiting the invitation to perform to the lunchtime audiences. These fringe-like impromptu concerts further encourage the children to trust in their self-belief that they are capable, and that their musical or vocal offering will be gratefully received while children eat lunch.

Dance is actively encouraged at the school. Irish and Scottish folk dance are offered to the children. Bollywood dance steps have been learnt also, alongside the formal ballet programme delivered by The Chelsea Ballet School.

“At St. Anthony’s the arts are thriving, the children have been immersed in a 360-degree

arts programme leaving no area neglected in their journey through school. To see this in action we welcome families to join our assemblies on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8.40am. One of the key aims of a KAS education is to give young people a lifelong love of learning, and that starts in Reception. The cleverly designed curriculum inspires children through a combination of play and structured learning and is delivered by passionate teachers. We peeked behind the doors of a Reception class to find out what a typical day looks like.

9AM REGISTRATION AND CLASS TIME . Classrooms and outdoor areas are set up with activities linked to children’s phonics, maths or ‘enquiry’ topics. Student Max showed us the model of a town and a school which linked to their ‘community’ topic telling us: “I love class time because I can choose what I’m interested in and want to play with.” Teacher Nina explained: “Learning at this stage is all about continuous provision and the application of key concepts through play, so the children are free to choose which activities they want to interact with as they all support the learning goals.”

Reception students share a wooded playground with Year 1 and break time is an opportunity to get outside and make the most of the trees, climbing frames, sandpit and other fresh-air activities, with fruit and healthy snacks to fuel the fun. Wellies are a must as rain never stops play!

10.45AM PHONICS TIME . Reception teacher Emma explains: “Once we’ve learned a sound in phonics the children move on to guided reading with a teacher, phonics games or group phonics activities. Using the ‘Read, Write, Inc’ system, we build their phonemic awareness gradually over the year.”

11.45AM LUNCH AND PLAY . Children can choose between a freshly cooked or packed lunch, and they eat together with their teachers in the Main Hall.

How long have you been head?

Since 2019, so this is my fourth year at the school.

What attracted you to Notting Hill Prep?

The fact that it’s an accredited Thinking School (now advanced accredited!) and truly tries to balance the joy of childhood with academic rigour. Academic success and happiness do not have to be mutually exclusive.

How would you sum up the school in a sentence?

An exceptional learning environment in which children feel safe to learn, embrace challenge and express themselves.

What makes it different?

The bond of respect and trust between the pupils and staff, for one. A former pupil also came up with the phrase that “NHP stands for No Happier Place”. Staff and parents do say that NHP has a different feel to it compared to other local prep schools, but it’s difficult to explain what the difference is. You can just feel it.

How would you describe the atmosphere?

Safe, friendly and an exciting place to learn and to work. The kindness that permeates the whole building is palpable.

What about your personal educational ethos?

I believe that when children feel safe and happy, they will thrive. Our role as educators is to give children time to grow into themselves, to allow them to make mistakes from which they will learn and to prepare them for life’s challenges.

How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side?

We make sure that we give them equal importance. Collaboration, character development, communication, creativity, resilience and teamwork are skills for life and should be taught in the same way as academic subjects. Pupils are encouraged to share and demonstrate their extracurricular achievements, and to draw on them in the classroom.

How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils?

At NHP, we believe that every child has the right to come to school each day feeling safe and happy. It’s why we place great importance on pastoral care. There is a comprehensive wellbeing

programme, which timetables pastoral activities into the school day to safeguard the children’s mental health. We also have a dedicated wellbeing team, which includes an in-house school counsellor and visiting counsellor.

We equip children to protect their own mental health, too. The strategies we promote include mindfulness techniques, drop-in counselling sessions, self-care and mood journals. Pupils can also voice any concerns through the school council.

Through these initiatives, we aim to help pupils understand themselves and their emotions, capitalise on their unique talents and keep themselves healthy. We also help them to make sense of the society in which they live and become valuable and valued members of their community.

What lessons have you learnt about educating children during a pandemic?

The importance of a school community, that nothing replaces face-to-face contact with friends and family, and that we can think creatively and flexibly when presented with unimaginable scenarios.

MOVING ON UP

Starting senior school can be daunting for parents and children alike. Lindsey Hughes, Headmistress at Channing School, shares her tips for successfully managing the transition

The much-anticipated moment is finally here: your child has a place at senior school and will soon be embarking on their sevenyear secondary school journey. Moving up to secondary school is exciting, but we know it can also be daunting for your child and a time of change for you, too. At Channing we are always there to support our students as they settle into their new environment, and I am sure the same is true wherever your child goes to school. It is particularly important that parents are involved, and I would urge you to get in touch if you think there is anything your child’s new school needs to know or if you have any questions or concerns.

The joy for us, just as much as for you, is watching our new pupils flourish as they grow through our Senior School. As they set out on this journey there is plenty to look forward to and I have no doubt that they will grasp all the opportunities that their new lives have to offer. But how can you help?

With extra-curricular activities and friends, encourage your child to choose a range of school

clubs to try – they can always decide on their favourites at a later date. Encourage them to continue hobbies outside of school but don’t let their schedule become overloaded. Keep a sensible school-home balance – good advice for all of us! Keep most social engagements for the weekends. Join the Parents’ Association and get to know other parents and staff, which will make you feel just as much a part of the school community as your child does.

At home, try to ensure your child eats a healthy breakfast (or attends Breakfast Club at school if they have to leave home early). Create a calm workspace where they can study without interruption. Support them but don’t do their work for them. Help them to organise themselves. Agree routines in advance, such as packing their bag the night before, getting up early and agreeing the time to leave home for school. Encourage good reading habits daily and monitor appropriate use of technology. We recommend that computers and phones leave your child’s bedroom at night, and this will be

easier to enforce when they hit puberty if they have been doing so since the start of secondary school! Try to establish an hour’s down time before bed in order to get a good night’s sleep.

You could practise the journey to school during the summer, so that they are confident to go it alone when the time comes, and once they’ve started don’t forget to keep the school up to date with relevant information and contact details. Last but by no means least, name all of their possessions, it will help avoid the unnecessary cost and stress of having to replace things when they are invariably misplaced.

If you are calm and positive about this exciting new stage in your child’s life, they will be too!

WHO’S AFRAID OF THE BIG AI?

AI could change the face of education: explore, don’t ignore say the experts at Edufuturists

Recent leaps forward in artificial intelligence, particularly the chatbot ChatGPT, have led to some scary headlines and predictions of a Terminator-style future. But in the education sector, AI technologies have the power to transform how teachers teach and pupils learn. We asked Ben Whitaker and Steve Hope of Edufuturists, which explores the future of education through podcasts, essays and events, to tell us more.

What’s your take on the furore about developments in AI? Should we be worried? No one likes change, and disruption is necessary for change to happen. For it to be positive, though,

we have to get the right minds around the table, asking the right questions. That’s things like, “What do we want this tech to do and how can we get there efficiently, not just quickly?” And: “Where’s the data stored and how is it used?” Asking the wrong questions about AI, or only asking “how can we stop it?”, just makes it scarier.

To what extent are AI technologies already contributing to education in the UK? Schools have been using AI to support new learning pathways and make teachers more efficient for some time. In that sense, it’s been doing two jobs – making teachers’ lives easier so they’ll hopefully join and stay in the profession,

and prepping pupils for the future by making their learning more personalised and relevant. For us, the biggest issue isn’t exams or Ofsted – it’s the “one size fits all” idea. Technologies like intelligent tutoring systems can personalise a pupil’s learning to help them succeed.

What about big AI “fails” like the A-level grading scandal in 2020?

We absolutely need to learn from the mistakes these technologies make, including the biases of the people creating them. That means acknowledging the issues, making the technology represent more diverse voices and having the right regulatory frameworks.

That said, we also need to ask if it’s a bigger risk to maintain the status quo. Ofqual itself admits that GCSE and A level results are accurate within a grade, so a B could actually be an A or a C. That’s potentially catastrophic for an A-level student trying to get into university. It also means that 250,000 GCSE English grades were wrong last year. Multiply that across all the different subjects and it’s millions of inaccurate grades.

What does the future of education look like, in your view?

Some trends are hard to foresee. But we like to talk about Martini Education – Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Google and Microsoft already have tools that can translate a live lesson into multiple languages in real time, for example. So education can be global as well as virtual. In the future, analytics could also tell us when a pupil is ready to progress – not the grade they get in an exam. We’ll probably need physical buildings to bring people together, though. Pupils can learn remotely, but they’ll need a hybrid model that also allows them to connect and be supported face to face.

What advice would you give to parents who are worried about AI technologies in schools, or just want to understand them better? We’d suggest three things:

1. Explore, don’t ignore. If your child uses ChatGPT to write an essay, don’t tell her to write it herself; turn it into a learning experience instead. Ask her if the essay reads like it’s been written by a child. If it doesn’t, how could she “correct the machine”?

2. Be curious. If you want your children to be fascinated and enjoy life-long learning, you need to adopt the same mindset. So take advantage of all the free stuff out there, like our newsletter and podcasts. Educate yourself!

3. Ask the right questions. You don’t only need to know whether your child’s school is using AI technologies. You also need to know that it’s preparing children holistically for the real world. How is it helping them to develop curiosity, critical thinking and compassion, not just to pass exams?

Living the DREAM

As much as we love living in London, we cannot deny the giddy prospect of buying a second home abroad. Whether we’re looking for a handy holiday home to keep returning to, a peaceful retirement spot, or a smart investment property that just so happens to come with sangrias and sandy beaches, a place in the sun really is the dream. But with all sorts of barriers to overcome, from language to the legal stuff, it can be difficult to know where to start. Luckily, we have homegrown property experts on hand to guide us.

“In the past, hopping backwards and forwards between the UK and a bolthole in the sun was a popular way of life, thanks to the rise of budget airlines,” says Savills’ Jelena Cvjetkovic, a London-

based director within the global residential team. “Today’s buyers are dividing their time more evenly as the climate crisis and new working patterns signal a move beyond short-stay trips away. The latest survey of our global residential agents shows that the concept of hybrid living, with owners spending longer in their second homes and turning them into true secondary residences, appears to be a real lifestyle shift in the wake of the pandemic rather than a passing trend. Post-Brexit, the length of time UK citizens can spend in the EU without a visa is limited to 90 days in 180 but even so, many are staying for longer than they would have done before, conscious of their carbon footprint and because they can now work from anywhere. If you are searching in Europe, be aware of the restrictions and plan to make it work for you.”

Jelena advises that good prep is key. If we’re well informed about the area we want to move to before we begin our property search, that can significantly fast-forward the decisionmaking process. “This is particularly relevant in constrained markets like Lake Como, for example, where supply is limited. So if you want to steal a march on the competition, the earlier you do your research, and the quicker you can act, the better.”

Rosy Khalastchy, head of Beauchamp Estates St. John’s Wood, believes that settling on a location abroad is often the easy part. “Finding the ideal property is perhaps more challenging, taking into account budget and location,” she says. “But before putting in that offer and mentally moving in and planning future summer and winter breaks, there are some very practical considerations to be made. It’s important to think about access: what’s the

travel time and cost to reach your bolthole? Would it be practical to use it for long weekends, or does travel time mean it’s only for longer periods? My advice is do your research, get to know the immediate area, and talk to some local residents. Think about amenities, too: where is your nearest train station, post office, supermarket and importantly, A&E department?” It’s all too easy to get caught up in the laid-back lifestyle a holiday home promises, but it’s important not to engage holiday mode just yet, as there are some vital practical points to take into account before you can fully relax, security being a major one. Whether you plan to leave your property empty for long periods, or you’re thinking about renting it out when you’re back in London, you will need long-distance peace of mind. “Protecting your home while not there is all important,” says Rosy. “Alarms and remote video cameras can help, as will knowing your neighbours.”

I joined the Hamptons team in 2014 in their Preston Bennett branch in Stanmore to break into the prime market and become the leading agent in the area, and over the past 10 years I’ve handled the sales of some of the most expensive houses in that area. Following the exciting takeover and acquisition of Preston Bennett by Hamptons in 2014, I saw my office grow from strength to strength. Hamptons massively invested in technology, their people, and the brand refresh a couple of years ago, which helped to elevate our local offices and compete with some of the larger agents in the area.

I now find myself taking on a new challenge at Hamptons as I head up offices on Heath Street in Hampstead and Haverstock Hill in Belsize Park. I’m heading back to an area that I’ve lived and worked in for many years; an area that I love and am passionate about. These two offices are set within one of the most salubrious, architecturally beautiful, and wealthy areas of London – we cover from Camden Town and St. John’s Wood in the south to Highgate and Hampstead Garden Suburb in the north. I have an incredible team working for me, with years of experience and extensive knowledge of the local area and the market. Every member of the team brings great skill and empathy to the job allowing me to be part of a very well-oiled machine! Being part of the Hamptons team is incredibly important to me, not least because the company is heavily involved in numerous projects that allow experts within the business to reach out to people

considering their next property move. We have just launched our first-ever podcast series, hosted by radio and TV presenter Anita Rani, and we returned to the Chelsea Flower Show last month with our Hamptons Mediterranean Garden, following last year’s gold win. The company’s impressive ongoing support to raise money and awareness for its charity partner Mind, and its continued commitment to work towards becoming a more sustainable company and protect the planet we call home make me proud to call myself a member of the Hamptons family.

Over the years, I’ve seen numerous cycles and changing trends in the property market, but I don’t think there’s ever been a decade like the past 10 years. If you take into account Brexit, stamp duty hikes, heavy taxation on overseas buyers, the pandemic and numerous lockdowns, it has been quite the rollercoaster. For the London market, the last quarter of 2022 was challenging, but the first quarter of this year has seen a slight upward curve. The market in north west London specifically has seen a continued shortage of stock but demand has remained consistent. It’s a very price sensitive market and sellers are keen to hold off until the price is right. The prime market in London is less impacted by current economic uncertainties –higher value properties seem to be outperforming as they tend to be purchased by cash buyers who are not impacted by increasing interest rates. hamptons.co.uk
