Starting your college career: Prepare and place at the right level Students new to Houston Community College are required to take the new Texas Success Initiative (TSI) assessment test. The TSI Assessment determines new students' preparation level for reading, writing and math, and places them in the most appropriate level of courses based on their college readiness. Preparing for the TSI Assessment test is critical to make sure students are placed in the appropriate level. If they do not take the time to prepare, they could be placed in a lower level than necessary, which will result in having to take more required courses and costing additional tuition and fees. The pre-assessment activity, test preparation and practices can be found at hccs.edu/tsi. HCC wants to ensure that our students successfully complete their courses and their education goals. A key aspect of this success is starting out at the correct level. TSI Assessment results will determine whether students begin at college level, are placed into developmental education, or begin in adult/basic education. Not all new students are required to take the TSI Assessment test. For additional information, including exemptions, new students need to visit hccs.edu/tsi or one of HCC's Enrollment Services Centers. The TSI Assessment is a statelegislated placement test required by public Texas colleges and universities prior to enrollment.
