What Causes Torsades de pointes?

Torsades de pointes (TdP) is a type of arrhythmia that can be life-threatening. Persons with long QT syndrome (LQTS) are at an increased risk of developing TdP. The QT interval is measured on an electrocardiogram (ECG). Torsades de pointes means “twisting of the points”, which refers to the appearance on the ECG during the condition. Long QT syndrome can be caused by genetics, certain types of medications, or low magnesium or low potassium levels. Antiarrhythmic medications (such as quinidine), macrolide antibiotics (such as azithromycin [Zithromax] and clarithromycin [Biaxin]), and certain antipsychotic medications (such as haloperidol [Haldol]) can lead to an increased risk of developing LQTS. Taking multiple medications that prolong the QT interval should be avoided. Signs and symptoms of LQTS may include fainting or seizures. If TdP occurs, any medication that may be causing the condition should be stopped. If low magnesium or potassium is the cause, treat ment should be aimed at restoring normal levels. For persons who are diagnosed with LQTS because of a genetic cause, a beta blocker such as propranolol (Inderal) may be prescribed. A pacemaker may be needed to prevent abnormal heart rhythms.

morning. It is great to work and live in a community that can come together for a wonderful cause that will benefit the children in our community. We are also proud to once again partner with the local exchange and rotary clubs to provide this community offering and plan to do so again in 2012,” said Leena Taneja, Director of Physician Relations and Marketing. Organizers of Santa’s Gift Exchange 2011 are anticipating an increase of qualifying families due to recent economic downturns. Santa’s Gift Exchange will provide toys and clothing to more than 3,500 economically disadvantaged children in Fort Bend County. “A special thank you to the 350 plus people who attended the free flu shot clinic and Santa’s Exchange event, as more children will now get the presents they deserve,” said Kaelyn Stolhand, Marketing Coordinator at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “We are thrilled that Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has once again collaborated with Santa’s Exchange for this very worthwhile project. The outpouring of support and toys from the community through this effort was truly awe inspiring. Through this joint effort, we are well on our way to collecting toys for the underprivileged Fort Bend children that without Santa’s Exchange would not be able to celebrate the holidays,” said Steve Griffith, President of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land. The toy drive will continue through December 14th and Methodist Sugar Land Hospital will remain a site for donations. Please drop off new, unwrapped toys or clothing items to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Main or Sweetwater lobbies. FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS TOE TENDONITIS

Repetitive use can cause the tendons of the big toes to become inflamed. This condition is referred to as tendonitis. There are a number of ways that one can develop this debilitating condition. Athletes such as runners or football players who push off hard surfaces can develop toe tendonitis. In other cases, the big toes may be bent back toward the shin, causing the tendons and ligaments to tear and become strained. Applying ice to the affected areas every few hours may help reduce inflammation, and taking ibuprofen may also promote faster healing. Shoes should be checked for proper fit and support. If you are experiencing pain in your big toes that inhibits you from moving freely, see your podiatrist. We know it’s next to impossible to ignore the pain caused foot conditions or injuries, especially when every step places weight and pressure on the affected area. Don’t wait for the pain and the problems to disappear. Most likely they won’t, and you’ll be left with a worse condition than when the problem was still new and relatively minor. Complete podiatric care is available at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. PH: 281-980-3668. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment.. HINT: Swelling of the big toe joint can limit one’s range of motion.
