Bev’s Burner

Some’s Hot, Some’s Not! Beverly Karen Carter

The “Star” invites its readers to share stories about Bev that will be placed on her “Burner” space as we begin to reach closure and deal with her passing. Please send your story (suitable for printing, of course) to editor@fortbendstar.com

Bev was always MADD No, not a typo. Bev Carter was indeed always MADD! Those of us at the S.E. Texas Regional Offices of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are saddened and have a genuine loss in the passing of Bev. There was more than once that Bev would actually call me and “get onto

me” because it had been a while since I had anything in the paper about MADD and the things we do in Ft. Bend County for the victims, and their families, of this violent crime. She would always ask, “Dave, are we still the “drunk driving capitol of the U.S.?” I still have to tell her “yes”. Bev made sure that the "F.B. Southwest Star" always stood up for the victims of drunk driving, and was

very instrumental in getting information and education to our Ft. Bend residents about the programs we have… especially to eliminate underage drinking. At our last staff meeting, the MADD staff shared a moment of silence as we reflected on the extreme appreciation we have for this lady that championed those who need it most. On a personal note: Bev honored us when she attended a Jazz party at our home when we first moved to Sugar Land four years ago. We became instant friends. Laughing as we stood in my kitchen. I recall riding with her, quite the adventure in itself, to go look at homes that were empty that could hold foster children. I recall conversations about God, and more specifically church, because she knew I attended First United Methodist in Missouri City. One of the nicest compliments she gave me was that I was not like a “regular” Christian. I recall her calling me late one evening when her daughter had died, and was honored to have designed and delivered the personal family flowers for Sherry’s memorial service. I will miss my friend, my champion, my Southern “butt kicker”….my Bev. Dave Anderson Mothers Against Drunk Driving S.E. Texas

A tribute to Bev

It’s hard to believe that Bev is gone on to her eternal rest. She would always have kind encouraging words for me. I don’t know how Fort Bend will replace such a maverick who would hold accountability to public servants without hesitation. She would check on me from time to time and often remind me to stop working so hard and try to join her as a guest at local events. One who cared to share a gift, Besides many wouldn’t consider it so, However as a public servant,

she was someone you’d have to get to know, Why? Because she constantly reminded public servants, that “whom much is given, much is expected”, She definitely left a legacy to Ft. Bend County, Often, I’d be afraid for her and thought someone may hire a Bounty, No, she wanted to awaken us and get everyone stirred up, It was simply not to simmer but to brew and perk up the very best in us Now we all have something that makes us unique,

Bev could not help that her treasure was not just for her to keep, She was genuine and told you like it was, One who never ran from controversy, It was the message she wanted us to take seriously Everyone can keep their letters of complaints, And even stationaries as Bev has gone to her eternal rest, She’s done the best she can do on this side, Now Bev has gone on beyond life’s test Author unknown

Greer’s background in marketing helps her consistently position her listings for the quickest sale possible. “My job is to make sure that the seller's home is one of the ten homes that prospective homebuyers choose to see in a day.” says Greer. “We work hard to showcase homes in the best manner possible. All of our sellers receive professional home staging services, professional photography, home warranties and a dedicated transaction coordinator to guide them from contract to closing. These special touches combine to reduce the amount of time our listings are on the market. In 2012, the median number of days on the market was 52, while our group averaged only 13 days.” The Sugar Land office of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene is located at 2323 Town Center Drive, Sugar Land. Man drowns after car plunges into lake By LeaAnne Klentzman

As Sunday evening wound to a close Fulshear police were called to a lake in the Cross Creek subdivision after a car plunged into the water. Fulshear Police Chief Kenny Seymour said Fulshear patrol units received the call about a car in the pond about 9:15 Sunday evening. Fulshear police and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s units all converged on the scene at the intersection of S. Fry and Cross Creek Bend. Seymour said officers from both agencies were on the scene inside of 2 minutes. When those officers arrived they found a resident in the water trying to rescue the occupant of the vehicle. Seymour said, “Officers with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office swam out to the submerged vehicle and attempted to locate the driver but due to the distance and the depth, they were unsuccessful in finding anyone.” According to witnesses, Ortiz-Rodriguez’s vehicle was driving westbound on S. Fry at a high rate of speed, said Seymour. He went on to explain that the vehicle failed to stop at the intersection, jumped the curb, and entered the lake. Witness also told law enforcement officers that they saw the occupant out of the truck “splashing around” before he went underneath the water. Shortly after 11 pm, members of the Richmond Fire Department’s Dive Team located the submerged body of Juan Ortiz- Rodriguez (22) of Houston, said Seymour.

Ortiz-Rodriguez was taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will determine the cause of death. Chief Seymour said, “The

City of Fulshear would like to express its condolences to the victim’s family and commend the citizens and deputies who selflessly responded to the incident.”

For more than 20 years, Fort Bend County Social Services has hosted the “Walk with Pride Shoe Program” in collaboration with various contributors including charitable organizations, private businesses, and individuals in the community. Each year before school begins, children of low income families can register to receive a free pair of shoes from select Payless Shoe stores. Each eligible child receives a new pair of shoes they can be proud of on the first day of school. Last year 1,100 children received a new pair of shoes. While the agency would like to help every child in need, the number of children it can help depends on the amount of funding received. Donations are being accepted at this time until August 7, 2013. destroyed? Instead of addressing our country’s alarming issues, last week’s Congressional generic update was quickly glazed over. Congressman Olson told us that no Republican voted for Obamacare—but no mention of defunding it; that the Obamacare train wreck is coming; that our immigration system is broken and that “I hope we’ll do something by September” on immigration—like Obama wants. We were told repeatedly that “I have a great place in Washington…and I get to brag.” Olson’s miscalculated vote against the Justin Amash Amendment (stop NSA data collection/spying) was justified simply because he was in Washington during 9/11—the same bill that the Honorable Ted Poe opposed because it grossly violates our 4th Amendment. We were told that Congress has already “wacked off 95%” of its discretionary spending, which now tells us what Congress will do—a big nothing! It won’t matter that 23M are unemployed; our economy is

worse than after WWII and spending is out of control; that our Vets’ medical needs are not met; that the NSA didn’t catch NY City’s subway plotter, terrorist David Headley, Fort Hood’s or Boston’s terrorists, the shoe, underwear or the NY Times Square bombers. Instead, Congress is focused on turning the moon landing site into a historical park; will raise the debt ceiling and spend more $$$$; the House will not defund Obamacare and will push another version of amnesty while Alejandro Mayorkas, Obama’s nominee, is now under investigation for his alleged intervention to obtain VISAs for foreign investors and we won’t know who will replace Big Sis until September; illegals will be put ahead of the 4M legal applicants already waiting in line. Are we still confused why this Congress is at a historic 10% approval rating and has been labeled the “Do-Nothing Congress”? For comments, contact Barbara J. Carlson at Barbara@ FortBendBusinessJournal.com.

How to Manage a Fast Heartbeat

Tachycardia is the medical term for a condition where the heart beats much faster than normal. A normal heart can beat anywhere from 60-100 beats per minute. In tachycardia, the heart rate is increased due to an increased stimulation of electrical activity within the heart’s conduction system. People who have a faster heart rate may experience dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, or a sudden sensation in the chest known as a heart palpitation. Tachycardia can be caused by a heart abnormality, drinking excessive alcohol, smoking, fever, or an overactive thyroid gland. To help manage tachycardia, most people will take a prescribed antiarrhythmic medication. While there are four classes of anti-arrhythmic medications, most people will either take a calcium channel blocker such as diltiazem (Cardizem) or a beta blocker such as metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol). These medications help reduce the heart rate. Since the risk of ablood clot is very high in people with certain types of tachycardia, many people may also be on a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin) ordabigatran (Pradaxa). Coumadin users may need periodical blood tests and maintain a consistent diet with regards to food rich in vitamin K. If severe, a pacemaker may be surgically implanted under the skin.

NOTICE OF RECEIPT OF APPLICATION AND INTENT TO OBTAIN WATER QUALITY PERMIT RENEWAL PERMIT NO. WQ0011046001 APPLICATION. Quail Valley Utility District, 3134 Cartwright Road, Missouri City, Texas 77459, has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to renew Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) Permit No. WQ0011046001 (EPA I.D. No. TX0035220) to authorize the discharge of treated wastewater at a volume not to exceed an annual average flow of 4,000,000 gallons per day. The domestic wastewater treatment facility is located at 2939 Blue Lakes Lane, Missouri City, in Fort Bend County, Texas 77459. The discharge route is from the plant site to Stafford Run; thence to Upper Oyster Creek. TCEQ received this application on May 30, 2013. The permit application is available for viewing and copying at the Quail Valley Utility District Office, 3134 Cartwright Road, Missouri City, Texas. This link to an electronic map of the site or facility’s general location is provided as a public courtesy and not part of the application or notice. For exact location, refer to application. h t t p : / / w w w. t c e q . t e x a s . g o v / a s s e t s / p u b l i c / h b 6 1 0 / i n d e x . h t m l ? l a t = 2 9 . 5 7 1 1 0 9 & l n g = 95.552817&zoom=13&type=r ADDITIONAL NOTICE. TCEQ’s Executive Director has determined the application is administratively complete and will conduct a technical review of the application. After technical review of the application is complete, the Executive Director may prepare a draft permit and will issue a preliminary decision on the application. Notice of the Application and Preliminary Decision will be published and mailed to those who are on the county-wide mailing list and to those who are on the mailing list for this application. That notice will contain the deadline for submitting public comments. PUBLIC COMMENT / PUBLIC MEETING. You may submit public comments or request a public meeting on this application. The purpose of a public meeting is to provide the opportunity to submit comments or to ask questions about the application. TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing. OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant and material, or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments, and the Executive Director’s decision on the application, will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision and for requesting a contested case hearing. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in state district court. TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; and, the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose.

FOR ADULT DISABLED MALE 3:00pm - 7:00pm • Mon. ~ Fri. 2 yrs. exper. with trach and feeding tube references & work history required background check required

Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. The Commission will only grant a contested case hearing on disputed issues of fact that are relevant and material to the Commission’s decision on the application. Further, the Commission will only grant a hearing on issues that were raised in timely filed comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. TCEQ may act on an application to renew a permit for discharge of wastewater without providing an opportunity for a contested case hearing if certain criteria are met. MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below. AGENCY CONTACTS AND INFORMATION. All written public comments and requests must be submitted to the Office of the Chief Clerk, MC 105, TCEQ, P.O. Box 13087, Austin, TX 78711-3087 or electronically at www.tceq.texas.gov/about/comments.html. If you need more information about this permit application or the permitting process, please call TCEQ Public Education Program, Toll Free, at 1-800-6874040. Si desea información en Español, puede llamar al 1-800-687-4040. General information about TCEQ can be found at our web site at www.tceq.texas.gov. See, #one woman says the other woman spat on her. But when police investigated, Other woman says in reality One woman is really who did the spitting, or so the story goes. But the bigger question is – spitting? What the heck are they thinking? Spitting? Are they spitting near the food? Now there is something that needs to be investigated!!! Ain’t police work grand? BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS FLIP FLOPPING

When it comes to footwear that adversely affects the feet, flip-flops are high on the list. For many people, flip-flops are the footwear of choice. Unfortunately, flip-flops offer no structural or heel support. Wearing flip-flops can negatively affect the positioning of the feet when making contact with the ground, potentially causing pain to the back, hips, and knees. Flip-flops bend and do not offer appropriate support. Friction that occurs when the straps rub against the upper foot can result in blisters. Sharp objects can puncture through the thin rubber soles and injure the foot. Anyone with diabetes or poor circulation in their feet should shun flip-flops and opt for sandals with heel cups and arch supports. What type of shoes do you wear? We treat patients of all ages for all kinds of podiatric problems, from minor to major to the prevention of both. Any toe and/or foot problems that cause discomfort when walking should be given prompt professional attention. Our goal is for you to be able to walk, run, and live pain-free! If you would like an appointment to address your aching feet, please give us a call at 281-980-3668. Our state of the art office is located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment. HINT: If you wear flip-flops, be sure to thoroughly wash your feet after you take them off.

Tara... the new OK Corral? THE FORT BEND

STHRSPOTTER By Elsa Maxey

Sugar Land, please...Stafford, please...Missouri City, please…

Fort Bend a little bit "Canadian style" could go a long way Forget being "Gangum style!" As ethnically diverse as is Fort Bend County, not unlike many of the populated places in Canada along the

coast bordering the U.S., Fort Bend County would really benefit from the polite personality experienced here. This FortBendSTARSpotter

Daniela Freeman and her mom Elsa Malakoff Maxey.

is being sent from Vancouver and the beauty of this area is highly complimented by the gentle people exchange in this community. Obviously this helps the tourist industry since so many people flock over to enjoy the beauty in a friendly place albeit the weather could have something to do with it, too. The real reason for being here is to celebrate my daughter's wedding that took place in a not so well known island in Canada called Cortes Island three ferries away from Vancouver. This week's "star" is my daughter, Daniela, married to Canadian Derek Freeman and they are about to make their home in Fort Bend. She attended some Fort Bend ISD schools, graduated from St. Agnes Academy and more recently from the University of Houston. Our Fort Bend kids seem to really want to stay here. This is particularly evident in Missouri City's Quail Valley, which has up to three same family generations living there, and for realtors that's bound to be a selling point. So lets really get our act even better tweaked with some more politeness and shine up this part of the Lone Star state's star... with the kind of sweetness the mere name of Sugar Land, central to Fort Bend, brings to mind. It may turn out that other areas may want to be "Fort Bend style!"

another. In that case two young men were driving on Pickett Drive in the Tara subdivision when they were stopped by three subjects in a white Explorer at the intersection of Pickett and Lee. Two of the occupants of the Explorer got out; one wielding

a pistol. “The first two turned their vehicle around and returned to a house on Jeb Stuart where they entered one of their homes,” explained Bob Haenel. He went on to say that as the white Explorer rolled up to the home on Jeb Stuart, three young black males got out of the vehicle and began shooting hand guns into

the air and into the ground. One of the males whom had returned to his Jeb Stuart residence stepped out of the house with a shotgun. No further information was available on any of the three cases. It appears Tara might just slip into a war zone like the plantation it was named for.

Fort Bend Subways more dangerous than New York SUBWAY, continued from page 1

missing one of his front teeth. There is no store video, and no one in the area saw anything. In each of the cases the store has been robbed by men with guns demanding access to the safe; then ordering the staff to the cooler or back office for

a prescribed amount of time before calling police. None of the cases have resulted in much bounty according to authorities. Neither have any of the cases appeared to warrant a closer police presence in the area; nor has the commercial district installed surveillance cameras for the safety of the

shopping public. To date the robberies have never resulted in physical injuries. Some of the robberies have been committed by a single individual and others by a duo. Anyone with information on any of these cases is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.

Christmas in July preparations are underway for Candlelight Tours It may only July, but the Fort Bend Museum Docents are busily preparing for the annual Candlelight Tours, which for many is the kickoff to Christmas festivities. “Each year, the docents decorate the 1883 historic home of the Moore family for almost 100 years. Every year’s theme is different; this year the docents will present “Life in the Moore Home” to highlight events in the home, community, nation, and world during various periods between the 1890’s and the mid-20th century,” said John Baker, co-vice president, Fort Bend County Museum Docents. Candlelight tours for the public will be held December 6 from 6 PM to 8 PM and on December 7, from 2 PM

to 8 PM. Tickets, available at the door, are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $3 for children. Group tours are available by reservation December 6, 9 AM to 11 AM and 1 PM till 3 PM. Call 281-341-6478 to schedule your group.

The docents are volunteers who support the mission of the Fort Bend County Museum Association, which is “to preserve the history of Fort Bend County and the surrounding area. The Association strives to inspire and educate the public for the purpose of

strengthening awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage for future generations.” The Fort Bend County Museum Association has preserved and interpreted Fort Bend County and Texas history since 1967. For more information, please visit www.fortbendmuseum.org
