Elected Officials Welcome SHRI NARENDRA MODI to Houston, Texas

It was an honor to meet Prime Minister Modi on my trip to India last year, and I look forward to his visit to Texas which will further build upon our strong economic and cultural partnership.

On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of Indian-Americans in Texas, and as co-chair of the Senate India Caucus, I welcome Prime Minister Modi to Houston. India continues to be a key security and economic partner of the United States, and I look forward to seeing that relationship strengthen with his visit to Texas.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit starts a new phase in India-U.S. relations

By SESHADRI KUMAR The participation of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the “Howdy Modi!” community summit in Houston may enter the record books for its sheer size as no other foreign dignitary other than the Pope would have been welcomed by 50,000 people nor has any head of state ever received such a vast reception in a foreign country. But the scope of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Houston is much larger than the size of the crowd as the visit has unprecedented significance with the potential to start a new phase in the India-U.S. relationship. The next major expectation is the meeting of Prime Minister Modi and President Donald Trump. The world already got a surprise treat, (not a sudden tweet) from President Trump, announcing his meeting with Modi. Trump is expected to visit Modi at the Howdy Modi! Rally in Houston on Sept. 22, according to reliable sources. Underscoring Prime Minister Modi’s standing relationship with President Trump, it is no surprise that he chose to share the stage with Modi, when hundred other heads of states are eager to have an audience with the U.S. President. Modi is visiting Houston directly and it is not a side

trip from his visit to New York. It is the other way round. The Prime Minister is landing directly in Houston to restore the city’s pride of place and in recognition of the energy capital’s enormous trade ties with India in the oil and gas sector. So far, all visiting Indian dignitaries have been paying attention to the IT sector on the west coast. Now, the focus is on the energy sector. The first official business of the prime minister after landing in Houston on the afternoon of Sept. 21 will be a very high level energy round table with a dozen top CEOs of U.S. oil companies. U.S. Energy giants like Exxon are eager to enter

“Howdy Modi! is like holding 100 Indian weddings”

The “Howdy Modi” summit has been organized with the support of more than 1,000 volunteers and 650 Texas-based Welcome Partner organizations. The event, titled “Shared Dreams, Bright Future”, focuses on the success of Indian-Americans and their contribution to the United States, as well as the strength of the US-India relationship. The event is on its way to a grand success thanks to the tremendous dedication of the volunteers and the financial contribution of the sponsors. The event has successfully moved from invitation, planning and registration to the climax. Enhancing the glorious event is the participation by President Donald Trump. It has been a massive effort, covering myriad areas with attention to detail. Imagine the sheer task of receiving more than 50,000 registrations, vetting each of the names and responding to each one with an entry pass. Though computers carry out the task, thousands of hours of volunteer work has gone behind the

scenes to accomplish it. Inviting 100 U.S. Senators and 425 Congressmen and women was another adventure. The stage performance will span 90 minutes and will involve multiple organizations and performers, all highlighting the community’s achievements and the talent and dedication of even the second and third generation Indian-Americans. It will be a colorful and wellplanned cultural extravaganza. Hundreds of performers have joined to present the main stage cultural program, “Woven”. If a fabulous wedding planning for 1,000 guests is a monumental task, the Howdy Modi! event surpasses the challenge of arranging 100 Indian weddings at the same time. And we hope, the guests will enjoy the momentous celebration, somewhat once in a lifetime event and return home with a sense of satisfaction, talking about the feast for long in the future.

the Indian market. Saudi Aramco has already committed to a $60 billion investment in India. In the one trillion dollar energy market, India buys about $100 billion worth of energy products from the U.S. Hence, the focus and attention on the Houston oil industry and it is occurring not a day sooner. The Prime Minister is also expected to remotely inaugurate two significant Indian projects in Houston, the Eternal Gandhi Museum and the Gujarati Samaj of Houston’s new building. Meanwhile, the Texas India Forum has been meticulously planning and executing a very challenging task of holding a public reception at NRG Stadium, a venue nearly three times the size of the Madison Square Garden in New York. The sheer logistics of getting about 52,000 names entered and entry passes delivered via email is a stupendous accomplishment. During the NRG event, Prime Minister Modi is expected to have a luncheon with the Congressmen and Senators as at least 50 of them have already confirmed. Simultaneously, the Prime Minister is expected to attend a private reception of all partner organizations, volunteers and other invited VIPs at NRG Stadium before he departs for New York by 4.30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Modi welcomes Trump via tweet

Statement by the Press Secretary from The White House

On Sunday, September 22, 2019, President Donald J. Trump will travel to Houston, Texas, and Wapakoneta, Ohio, to underscore the important partnerships between the United States and India, and Australia. In Houston, President Trump will participate in an event with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. The event, “Howdy, Modi! Shared Dreams, Bright Futures,” is expected to draw tens of thousands of people. It will be a great opportunity to emphasize the strong ties between the people of the United States and India, to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the —JUGAL MALANI world’s oldest and largest Chair, Howdy Modi! democracies, and to discuss Organizing Committee ways to deepen their energy

and trade relationship. President Trump will then travel to Wapakoneta, Ohio, where he will be joined by Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia for a tour of a new, Australian-owned manufacturing facility. This visit will demonstrate the strong trade and investment relationship between the United States and Australia and President Trump’s successful efforts to restore the United States as the world’s leading destination for foreign direct investment.

Houston’s legendary dance teachers Supradipta Datta, Padmini Chari, Lavanya Rajagopalan, (Rear) Indrani Parthasarathy, Rathna Kuamr and Sunanda Nair at the rehearsals for the welcome for Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Howdy Modi! rally. Attendees to “Howdy, Modi!” will be in for a once in a lifetime cultural program at the start of the event on Sunday, September 22 at NRG Stadium in Houston. They will get to see “Woven: The Indian-American Story”, a 90 minute cultural program that is a celebration of Indian-Americans and their contributions to the cultural, intellectual, and social landscape of the United States. The over 50,000 attendees and those watching at home will experience the vibrant expressions of a people empowered by their identity and driven to enrich the communities around them. The program will start at 10 a.m before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the stadium. Presented by the Texas India

Forum, “Woven” is a 90-minute music, dance, and multimedia show featuring close to 400 artists and community members from Texas and across the nation. There are 27 groups performing in a seamless live and multimedia experience that will showcase the diversity in the Indian-American community. Two original songs have been written for the program, which will trace the journey of IndianAmerican youth learning their roots to understanding how to put that together with the contemporary world. “A challenge that many second and third generation Indian-Americans go through is navigating the complexity of having a hyphenated identity as an Indian and an American. “Woven” showcases the multiplicity of Indian-American

experience. Our hope is that each person sees themselves in at least one form of expression and recognizes that whatever mix of Indian and American they are, it is just right,” said Heena Patel, CEO of MELA Arts Connect and co-producer of the program. The show will also shine a light on unsung heroes in the Indian-American community who have undertaken selfless acts benefiting the broader American community without

any need of recognition. From the classical and folk traditions passed on in basements across America to the creative exchange between Eastern and Western arts and ideas, Woven illuminates the stories of generations of IndianAmericans and snapshots of home, and builds on the theme of “Shared Dreams, Bright Futures” that is the foundation of the event. “We really look forward to presenting this unique and

interesting cultural show at the event, which will tell the story of our community in a way that’s never really been done before. We want all the attendees and those watching from home to connect with a program that shows the Indian-American community and understand what drives our community to be part of the larger American experience,” said Gitesh Desai, spokesperson for the event.

VIEWS All of the people, all of the time The historic weekend of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Houston (‘Howdy Modi’Sept. 22), has been made more historic by the White House announcement of President Trump joining Mr. Modi in that visit. It is difficult to underestimate its impact. This is the first time ever that an American President has joined a visiting Indian Prime Minister meeting with Indian diaspora. History is being made. History is not only for the history books and history buffs. It provides multi-faceted, larger context to every person, every event. It seems Mr. Modi’s visit to Houston will end up bringing a much larger context few could have imagined. We need history to grow, to grow with a sense of history, a sense of belonging. Prime Minister Modi certainly has given that sense of belonging to Indians all over the world. The Prime Minister made history by his abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir. Things are being misrepresented in the Indian media about J&K and Article 370. Such misrepresentation can cause misguided strife, as in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) since the abrogation of Article 370. The one-time Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Abdullah is a footnote in the history books. Sher-e-Bharat Modi is here. His deeds will outlive him by centuries. During a session of the UN General Assembly on Friday, the 13th of September, Maleeha Lodhi, Pakistan’s envoy, referring to India’s August 5 abrogation of Article 370 ending J&K’s special status, called it an action ‘in flagrant violation of multiple UNSC resolutions’. That’s Pakistan distorting history as usual. To be ignored as usual. But some Indians in & outside India, need a truth serum about J&K. Exhibit A: The ‘rotten tomatoes’ (IH – Aug. 18) winner P. Chidambaram & a horde of ‘dislike-minded’ voices from Congresspersons to Communists & all hues in between committing political blasphemy. It’s an affliction called ‘politicitis’. No cure. As for the ‘multiple resolutions’, actually it is the same resolution multi-quoted, every time the J&K issue comes up at the UN. When India was partitioned in 1947, (‘Pakistan or civil war’ per Jinnah), it was on the principle of large adjoining areas of Muslim majority becoming Pakistan. That’s how West Pakistan & East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) were born. Hyderabad had a Muslim majority with a Muslim King, the Nizam of Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) who pretended to need time to decide while in secret talks with Pakistan. But Hyderabad smack in the middle of India. The then Home Minister, Iron Man Vallabhbhai Patel nipped a future problem in the bud and

ordered an overnight military action neutralizing the Nizam, keeping Hyderabad in India. Jammu & Kashmir was the only (princely) state that bordered both countries. Jammu had Hindu majority while Kashmir was majority Muslim. But the King of J&K was Raja Hari Singh, a Hindu. He too was waffling to make up his three minds – India, Pakistan or independence. Word was that he originally tried to maintain his independence by playing off India and Pakistan. Too late for Pakistani patience, Pakistani army (dressed as ‘freedom fighters’) crossed their border into Kashmir. According to one version, Raja Hari Singh called India’s Prime Minister Pandit Nehru and said, “Help!” Nehru said he can’t help because ‘you’re not part of India’. Raja Hari Singh said, “Then make me part of India,” and that’s how the instrument of accession came about with Article 370.” Another version says, Pandit Nehru was ready to send troops but the Governor-General of India, Lord Mountbatten, advised the Maharaja to join India before India could send its troops. Considering the situation, the Maharaja signed the Instrument of Accession to India, thanks to Pak aggression that led to the first Indo-Pak war. Nehru sent Indian troops. Pak’s ‘troops’ were pushed back by the advancing Indian army. The British were mad & spread their madness to their ‘master’, America who spread the virus to its Western alliance countries. A Security Council meeting was convened; India & Pak were asked to cease fire. That’s how the now famous LoC (Line of Control) was born. And the oftmisrepresented Resolution of the Security Council of August 13, 1948 was passed. We’ll get to that resolution presently. Growing up in the sixties and seventies in Mumbai, every time a Pak dictator was in trouble with his people, he sent trouble (read infiltrators) to the Indian part of J&K leading to skirmishes, threatening wars & twice actual wars – the 1965 Raan of Kutch war (under our beloved PM Shastriji) & 1971 war of Bangladesh independence (Indian PM Indira Gandhi). The skirmishes & wars were followed by skirmishes at the UN Security Council, were supported by all the deaf & blind countries in the Western world. Deaf because they just could hear what India was saying. Blind because they (obviously) couldn’t read the terms of the agreement. Thankfully every time the (same) Security Council resolution August 13 UNSC resolution to hold plebiscite, in the name of plebiscite - was vetoed by Russia. That is what every Indian grew up reading. And why in the name of truth were the Western countries supporting Pakistani repeatedly for decades.

INDIA HERALD • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2019 • PAGE 7

Upon migrating to America, it was hard not to notice that the so-called independent US news media from Washington Post to New York Times to Los Angeles Times & every other Times in every state was also deaf & blind to the UN resolution. This time I knew they were not dumb having read about Watergate & the Anderson Papers. When in 1980s, terrorism by terroristan began in J&K, the Western world was deaf & blind again. ‘Both-sidism’ of the biased kind. Before we get to the August 13, 1948 resolution, let’s talk about comedian Hasan Minhaj & his parents – a good example of misinformation – deliberate or otherwise. Minhaj makes the familiar noises about India, Modi & minorities. He complains that no one from the BJP would agree to sit down for an interview but Congress MP Shashi Tharoor did. Tharoor would talk to Miss Piggy to stay in the public eye. Meanwhile on the streets of San Francisco, parents of Hasan Minhaj joined protesters on Aug. 17 saying, “We just want our UN sanctioned Right to self-determination.” The rest of the Western world that agreed with them till 9/11, was/is blind anymore. Now they read the notso-fine print of the resolution. About the resolution, frustration (with the US & its allies in the UN Security Council) made yours truly write to the then Indian Ambassador Naresh Chandra on February 4, 1998 asking for a copy of the resolution that Pakistan & the Western world kept throwing in India’s face repeatedly. Indian Embassy’s political Minister Mr. Amitava Tripathi responded with a letter of February 11, 1948. And I quote: “I

have been asked by Ambassador Naresh Chandra……to enclose a copy of the relevant UN Security Council Resolution of August 13, 1948, clearly spelling out the preconditions that have to be met before a plebiscite could be held in Jammu & Kashmir. You will notice that as per part II (A) (1) of the Resolution, the Government of Pakistan was required to withdraw all its troops from the State since the presence of such troops constituted a material change in the situation as earlier represented by the Government of Pakistan before the Security Council. As per part II (A) (2) of the same Resolution, the Government of Pakistan was required to use its best endeavor to ensure the withdrawal from the State of Jammu & Kashmir of tribesmen & Pakistani nationals not normally resident therein who had entered the State for the purpose of fighting. As per part II (B) (1) of the Resolution only after the Pakistani troops and tribesmen etc. had been withdrawn from the State, would the Government of India be required to withdraw the bulk of its forces (not all) and in stages to be agreed upon the UN Commission for India and Pakistan. To this day Pakistan has not fulfilled its part of the bargain, and therefore, the Government of India is no longer bound by the Resolution which is now 50 years old…..” Mr. Tripathi enclosed a copy of that resolution. It confirms everything he wrote. The resolution is now seventy-one years since the Aug. 13 UN resolution. Pakistan would not have had chutzpah, the nerve to ask for the right to that UN Resolution without the deaf & blind? By what logic did

America, Britain (not so great any more) & other deaf & blind countries support plebiscite for over seven decades forcing India to depend on Soviet veto to ward off this nonsensical insistence on a UN resolution that is selfexplanatory & is now long outdated, dead & (should have been) buried? And this ‘UN sanctioned Right to self-determination’ is what Minhaj’s parents were protesting for. They are Indians. So is their ‘15-minutes’ fame’ son & his reportedly Hindu wife, Beena Patel. In the thirty plus years spent in India, I didn’t meet one Indian Muslim friend, acquaintance or colleague supporting India in Kashmir. Three wars between India & Pakistan and not one Muslim saying India is right & Pakistan is wrong. The one Muslim close friend I had, really close, too didn’t think Kashmir should be part of India. When told about this history of Kashmir & the subsequent UN resolution, he was genuinely surprised & shook his head about the Imams in his mosque misleading them. It defies the principle of separation of Church & State. Yet the general Indian populace has been historically good about their relations with Muslims around them, as it should be. That is India’s post-independence history. Bending backwards for secularism. (Shah Bano case.) The 71-year ‘history’ of misrepresentation of the Aug. 13 1948 UN resolution proves that “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.” Abraham Lincoln. ASIE hosts silver jubilee gala

By SESHADRI KUMAR • The American Society of Indian Engineers and Architects (ASIE) which began in 1994 with a handful of members has grown into an organization of repute, celebrating its Silver Jubilee on Sept. 12 at the Omni Hotel in Houston. Today, the Society stands on a firm footing and commands respect from other professional organizations, said ASIE President Showri Nandagiri. “Over the past twenty five years, the continuous encouragement of engineers and architects of the Houston area has helped ASIE achieve its goals. I salute their efforts and sincerely applaud their desire to see this organization grow,” Nandagiri said. ASIE is a platform for engineers and architects to develop camaraderie and fellowship, and in the process offer assistance to members who seek growth in their career path. When the organization was created, there were far fewer people of Indian ethnicity in the workforce. The platform that ASIE created provided a backdrop

which helped young engineers and architects envision their own levels of success. Once ASIE was able to establish itself, it sought students of Indian origin pursuing engineering and architectural careers in local universities, to provide needy and deserving students with financial assistance. The current board, early in the year, set an ambitious goal to award $ 25,000 to students in honor of its 25th year of existence, Nandagiri said. LyondellBasell CEO Bhavesh Patel was the chief guest of the evening. Patel, who came to the US when he was 10 years old, did not narrate the customary rags to riches tale, but spoke about what made him achieve what he wanted in his career. There is no short cut to success and one needs to build a strong foundation so that you can withstand turbulences in your career, he told the audience. In his advice to young aspiring professionals, Patel stated that they should not simply dream of becoming a CEO in 10 or 15 years, but live by the See ASIE, Page 10

DANCE DEBUT. Amritha Thiruvengadam, daughter of Dr. Vijaya and Dr. Thiruvengadam, gave her Rangapravesam on Aug 17 at the San Jacinto college auditorium. A student of Dawson High School, Pearland, Amritha learnt dance from Dr. Rathna Kumar, Director of Anjali School for Performing Arts and from Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan at the Silambam School of Dance. As Amritha’s slender figure swirled around the stage with ease and grace, she demonstrated that dance is a poetic form of expression as well. See Page 11.

remarked how his parents taught all his three sisters Bharathanatyam and he remembered all of them danced for the song “Chinanjiru Kiliyae.” He also congratulated Amritha for full-filling a generation’s expectation for an arangetram completion. All the songs for the dance program were well chosen by Amritha’s mother Dr. Vijaya Thiruvengadam and had been choreographed specially for Amritha by her guru, Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan. Amritha gave a thank you speech in which she highlighted her respect and adoration to all her teachers for their support and guidance in making her a good dancer. She thanked each and every one who helped her in her dance journey, her parents for their unconditional support and her friends who always encouraged her. Her parents thanked each and every one of their friends and volunteers for their unflinching support and help in making their dream come true with ease. “Language is the Roadmap of a Culture”! Amritha’s parents had set their heart on establishing the Houston Tamil Studies Chair (HTSC) in the University of Houston and provided their best support for this noble cause. It was Amritha’s desire to donate all the proceedings received to HTSC. I would like to acknowledge this piece of information with pride and pleasure that I taught Tamil to Amritha for many years. It gives me immense joy to see that I imparted Tamil Culture along with our language to Amritha. Amritha stole the hearts of every one who attended the event through her dance. Her uncle Dr. S.V. Raman, bestowed a title “Kutti Vayjayanthimala” to Amritha.

Teacher Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan who did the nattuvangam along with her student Vennila Satheesh added so much beauty to the event. Venilla’s own jathi compilation was an excellent addition to the nattuvangam. A remarkable aspect of this accompaniment is that all the artists were young local artists, who grew up in the United States. Chief Guest Dr. Rathna Kumar praised Amritha for her dedication and perseverance to learn the skills of dancing. Dr. Lavanya presented the graduation certificate to Amritha and was very appreciative of Amritha’s hard work. In his speech, Amritha’s brother ShriRam Thiruvengadam, praised his sister for all her hard work and in his own humorous way expressed his “Tom & Jerry” sibling affection on his sister’s big day. Amritha’s friend Shruthi Natarajan, gave a beautiful congratulatory note to her friend and displayed her sisterly affection to Amritha. RICHMOND: Falguni Pathak, the unparalleled ‘Dandiya Queen’, a singer and performing artist from India, is all set to rock the Dandiya Dhoom 2019 event to be held on Friday, September 20, at George Ranch Historical Park at 8 p.m. Falguni’s music is based on traditional musical forms from the Indian state of Gujarat. Since her professional and private debut in 1998, she has developed into an artist with a large fan following across India and beyond. Her debut album was released in 1998, and was the first of many more to come. She has also recorded numerous songs that have been featured in Bollywood movies. Most of the themes in her songs are about love. She has performed in many shows, many of which have run all night! Some of her popular songs are “Chudi jo khanki haath mein”, “Maine payal hai chhankai”, “Meri chunar udd udd jaye”, “Ayi pardesh se pariyon ki rani” and “Sawaan Mein”. The American Society of Indian Engineers and Architects (ASIE) which began in 1994 with a handful of members has grown into an organization of repute, celebrating its silver jubilee. Today the society is standing on a firm footing and commands respect from other professional organizations, says ASIE President Showri Nandagiri. Lyndoll Basel CEO Bhavesh Patel, the chief guest, came to the U.S. when he was 10. He did not tell the customary rags to riches tale, but spoke about what made him achieve what he wanted in his career. There is no short cut to success, build a strong foundation so that you can withstand turbulences in the career, he told the audience. To the young aspiring professionals, Patel said they should not simply drream of becoming a CEO in 10 or 15 years, but live by the principle of what you contribute and what you can learn from the job. STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI Visit, programs of Prince of Wales are boycotted During the latter part of 1920 Gandhi advocated a triple boycott. He wanted an absolute boycott of the Government and all government institutions, including schools, colleges, and courts. If the people were free of these they could easily have their own schools, colleges, and courts, and the power of the British would collapse at once. There was much laughter and ridicule from the moderates and the supporters of British rule. But Gandhi paid no attention. Now read on: Gandhi's activities made the British government panicky. They issued a warning that anyone who overstepped the bounds of law would be arrested and imprisoned. Gandhi thought that this warning was a victory for the campaign. He issued instructions which the people were to follow if he were arrested. On December 26, the Congress session was held in Nagpur. Though there were signs of opposition to Gandhi’s policies, his resolution was passed with an overwhelming majority. The adoption of the new program at Nagpur was the signal to start the mass movement. Gandhi felt that the complete boycott of all government organizations would give a chance to the Congress to set up a parallel organization, a State within a State which would lead India to Swaraj. The Duke of Connaught was sent to India in 1921 to try to pacify the Indians. He came to open the four legislatures in the country which had been introduced as a result of the reforms announced by the King. His coming and going passed off without any material change in the attitude of Indians towards Britain. Gandhi travelled far and wide, propagating the ideals of nonviolence and noncooperation. Day by day the Indians were getting more and more excited over carrying out Gandhi's program. Many students left their institutions, many officers resigned their posts. The boycott movement gained momentum. As the people's morale grew, the morale of the government went down. Repression started. Gandhi advised the people to have patience, and he insisted on nonviolence. He saw the weaknesses of Indians and he urged them to improve. He wanted social reforms and constructive work to be intensively followed. It was announced that the Prince of Wales was to visit India. Functions were arranged at many places to enable him to meet his loyal subjects. Gandhi was indignant when he read the announcement in the newspapers. “Do the British think we are children?” he said. “Do they believe that parades for the Prince will make us forget atrocities in the Punjab or the perpetual delay in granting us Home Rule?” On Gandhi’s advice the Congress declared that all parades, receptions, and celebrations in honor of the Prince were to be strictly boycotted. “We have no

Sponsored by Houston Arts Alliance in honor of Mahatma Gandhi Sesquicentennial Houston celebrations.

Mahatma Gandhi Week is being observed in Houston from September 27 to October 3, 2004. Various activities are being planned, including essay competitions for children, lectures, exhibitions, seminars, etc. This will be done in collaboration with several Houston area Indian and American cultural and religious organizations. For more information, call Atul Kothari at 713-785-3900 or visit www.mahatmagandhi library.org grudge against His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales,” said Gandhi, “but our ideas are against him as a symbol of oppression. We can show the world that such noncooperation is just the reverse of the European doctrine of the sword. Let us act in accordance with the holy prophets of old. Noncooperation without violence is the battle of the brave.” Fearing that there would be disorder when the Prince of Wales visited various places, the government began severe acts of suppression. Thousands of people were arrested. The Indian people were so agitated that in city after city bonfires burned and the bonfires were made with foreign cloth, especially British cloth. On November 17, 1921, the Prince of Wales landed in Bombay. Loyal stooges of Britain went to greet the royal visitor. Those who were observing nonviolent noncooperation did not molest them. However, passion suddenly blazed out. Religious and political hatreds fanned the flames. Riots started, many were killed, much property was destroyed. There was panic in the city. Gandhi was in Bombay, and he rushed to the scene of disorder to stop the rioting. Order was finally restored. “Every man has the right to his religion and his own political opinion. Satyagraha will never succeed until man understands that,” Gandhi announced bitterly. In other cities the boycott of the Prince’s visit was peaceful. As the unfortunate Prince of Wales visited city after city, he- was greeted with empty streets. Not a shop was open. The people remained behind closed doors and drawn curtains. This infuriated the British and they called upon the government of India to act. Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal, and other leaders

were arrested and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment. Yet the determined courage of the people did not abate. They were ready to suffer any penalty for the cause of Home Rule. Demands had been made to Gandhi that he should start a mass movement for the attainment of Swaraj. Gandhi decided to act. Preparations were made to start satyagraha in Bardoli. But Gandhi had to stop the campaign suddenly because of what had happened ill Bombay and other places. In Chauri Chaura, near Gorakhpur in U.P., some policemen fired on a crowd which was holding a demonstration against the government. This annoyed the demonstrators so much that they became very violent. They chased the police. The police took refuge in the city hall. The angry mob surrounded the hall and set it on fire. Some policemen were burned to death. Others, trying to escape, were killed by the furious mob outside. Gandhi was very upset. He thought that it was clear that the people were still not prepared for satyagraha. He stopped the intended satyagraha at Bardoli. His co-workers did not agree with him, but he was adamant. He wanted his followers to start constructive programs. Many Indians were sorry for Gandhi's action. They thought that Swaraj was now within their reach and the movement should therefore continue. The Government was playing a waiting game. Instead of thanking Gandhi for stopping the mass movement, they arrested him on charges of sedition and sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment. He was removed to Yeravda Central Jail in Poona. In prison Gandhi settled down to a regime of spinning, writing, and meditation. The people were disappointed and the government tightened its hold. Almost all the leaders were put in jail. Then, in 1924, Gandhi fell ill. He was suffering from appendicitis and was in great pain. The government was alarmed. What would happen if Gandhi died in prison? An urgent operation was arranged, and Gandhi agreed. The operation was successful, but his recovery was very slow. The government thought it best to release him, so he was set free. He went to Juhu, near Bombay, for recovery. — To be continued
