Organizers in execution mode to welcome historic gathering to the “Howdy, Modi!” event

HOUSTON Volunteers for the Texas India Forum are in the final phase of planning to get ready for the massive crowd at the NRG Stadium for the “Howdy Modi” community summit on Sept 22 to welcome the visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There is excitement in the community to celebrate the success of Indian-Americans and make the event an occasion to remember. Positive energy permeated a recent meeting of community leaders as the event provided an opportunity to showcase

the unity of the diverse IndianAmerican community and their intent to celebrate the accomplishments of the community here in the US. The crowd turnout is expected to be the largest for any Indian Prime Minister to address in North America and the largest for a democratically elected foreign leader in America. More than 650 community organizations have signed up as Welcome Partners for the event. At a meeting of the leaders of those organizations over the weekend, it was stressed that

after successfully launching the event and then registering over 50,000 attendees, the effort has now entered the third and critical phase of execution. In expectation for this, the Texas India Forum will be providing free parking onsite at the stadium for all attendees. All registration for the event has closed, though a waitlist is still open. Applicants are being vetted and the first batch of confirmations for members of the Welcome Partners has been sent out. Other attendees will be notified next.

The event, titled “Shared Dreams, Bright Future”, will focus on the success of Indian-Americans and their contribution to United States, as well as the strength of the US-India relationship. Their voices will be heard loud and clear. At the community leaders meeting, Jugal Malani, chairperson of the event, said “the event is on its

way to a grand success thanks to the tremendous dedication of the volunteers and the financial contribution of the sponsors. The event has successfully moved from inviting PM Modi to come to Houston to planning and registration to now the execution phase. It has been a massive effort, covering myriad areas with attention to detail.” The cultural committee shared the ambitious plans for the cultural programs at the event. The stage performance will span 90 minutes and will involve multiple organizations and performers, all highlighting the community’s achievements and the talent and dedication of even the second and third generation Indian-Americans. There are plans to have celebrations of India on the concourses and outside the stadium gates as spectators enter the event. It will be a colorful and wellplanned cultural extravaganza. “It is our community’s event, where the attendees should feel at home at every turn. The event will mark a watershed in the history of IndianAmericans in the country,” said Gitesh Desai, spokesperson for the event. For more information, please visit www.howdymodi.org. The Texas India Forum, Inc. (TIF) is a not-for-profit organization that encourages cooperation between the United States and India, advancing the shared values of democracy, inclusive economic development, and mutual respect. TIF brings together Indian-American organizations and institutions to encourage collaboration within the region and expand opportunities for engagement with India.

Hindu Americans feel betrayed by leftist Democrats

By SESHADRI KUMAR The cozy relationship between Hindu Americans and the Democratic Party has come under severe strain. The open hostility of some Democratic Party leaders over India’s handling of the Kashmir issue and their support to Pakistani Muslims has caused consternation among Indian Americans in general and Hindu Democrats, in particular. Added to this volatile issue is the efforts of the Indian leftist organizations and Pakistani Muslim organizations in the U.S. orchestrating protest demonstrations against the muchpublicized visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Houston on Sept. 22. The latest episode which precipitated a crisis of confidence between Hindu Americans and Democratic Party leaders is a tweet by Indian American US. Rep. Ro Khanna from California. Khanna is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President. Khanna referred to an article in The Caravn magazine which attacked Presidential Candidate Tulsi Gabbard for her ties with Hindu groups in the U.S. and Hindu organizations in India. Khanna described the hit piece by Pieter Friedrich as an “important article.”“It’s the duty of every American politician of Hindu faith to stand for pluralism, reject Hindu-

mittee hosting Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Houston. Pakistani Muslims praised the organization “for standing up for human rights and doing the right thing” in withdrawing support to Modi’s event. The antagonism between the Indian community and the Pakistani community in Houston is not new, but that adverse relationship rarely spilled over in public forum. However, there is a section of Muslims from India, who under the banner of Indian Muslims of Association of Greater Houston, is cordial with Hindu groups and Indian PM Modi. Many leftists Indian organizations in the U.S. have been campaigning against India’s Hindu Nationalist Party and Modi for many years so much so the U.S. government denied visa to Modi, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat state. While the leftists and Democrats have been not friendly to Hindu political groups, local Hindu leaders supported the same Democrats. Some of those who supported Modi, India and its right wing party, opposed President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the U.S. Mostly the anit-Trump sentiments led a section of Hindus toward Democrats and this group may be called for convenience, “establishment” HinSee Page 5

tva, and speak for equal rights for Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhist[s] & Christians,” wrote Khanna on Twitter on August 29. “That is the vision of India my grandfather Amarnath Vidyalankar fought for. Vidyalankar (1901-1985), who was repeatedly jailed for participating in India’s struggle for independence, later served as a Member of Parliament in the Republic of India,” Khanna said in the tweet. Khanna’s tweet is seen as an example for “Biting the hand that feeds. In another episode, US Senator and Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, addressing the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America in Houston on Aug. 31, said India’s action in Kashmir was “unacceptable.” Sanders said he was deeply concerned about the situation in Kashmir and asked the US government to speak in favor of U.N. backed resolution. Soon after India withdrew the special status accorded to Kashmir, Muslim religious organizations staged a protest outside the Indian Consulate in Houston. Meanwhile, The Ismaili Jamathkana in Sugar Land, a part of the Aga Khan Council Southwestern U.S., withdrew its partnership with the com-

COMMUNITY Hindu Congress. Hindus Now, the same HAF is getFrom Page 3

dus. But, there have been Indians who have been Democrats, even before the Trump-era and they are not necessarily proestablishment Hindus. The role of Sri Kulkarni, a Democrat who owed his political ascendency to the establishment Hindus, is now drawing scrutiny. He is friendly with both Hindus and Muslims and he attends Pakistani programs and Hindus events. He has not openly criticized Pakistan or supported India on its stand on Kashmir. In fact, he criticized Congressman Pete Olson for calling Pakistan a terrorist state, during India’s Independence Day celebrations at India House in Houston last year. Indians, who are Republicans, find this dichotomy or contradiction among establishment Hindus inexplicable. A case in point. Last year World Hindu Congress was convened in Chicago. Leftists forced Democratic Party elected officials from attending the event. Tulsi Gabbard, a self-avowed Hindu, was forced to withdraw from attending the Congress. Even Hindu American Foundation, an organization funded by the so-called right-wing Hindu activists, did not openly associate itself with the World

ting its bitter pill, when its left-wing and Democratic supporters are piling up on Hindutva. The irony is that HAF strongly supports Kashmiri Hindus and supports government of India’s recent action. Rep. Brad Sherman (DCA), Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans and a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has filed H.Res. 408 “Resolution Condemning Pakistan-based Terrorism in India, Supporting the Rights of Kashmiri Pandits.” A section of Hindus has been annoyed by the establishment Hindus’ support to Democrats like Khanna and Kulkarni. This discord among Hindus has been simmering for some time. Now, the time has come for reckoning. The Hindu Democrats are now under pressure to revisit their policy of supporting Democrats who are not friendly to Hindu groups or Indian policies. The right will be right and the left will be left, whether it is Indian politics or American politics. The establishment Hindus sought to straddle this political divide so far. Can the Indian right be compatible with the left in the U.S.?

Krishna Janmashtami at ISKCON of Houston

Krishna Janmashtami- Lord Krishna’s Appearance Day was celebrated at ISKCON of Houston on Friday, August 23rd with a grand celebration marked with special guests, spiritually charged sacred sounds and packed cultural performances. Thousands crowded into the temple to take part in this auspicious celebration. Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who appeared over 5,000 years ago enacted many pastimes to satisfy the hearts of His devotees and reestablish the principles of righteousness. As this day is one of the most celebrated festivals for Vaishnavas, it is celebrated worldwide as a testament of love, life, happiness and devotion to the Supreme Lord, Krishna. Widely acknowledged as the Hindu Christmas, Janmashtami is observed by fasts and feasts, sacred chants and personal prayers and above all, the glorification of His holy name in the form of musical mantra meditation, kirtan. This year, ISKCON of Houston was joined by Hindus of Greater Houston to elevate the festival and bring about a more wholesome experience for all the attendees. Working together for many months, both organizations saw their hard work pay off as more than 6,000 people experienced a cultural revolution of the heart as they took part in the programs in the temple, saw the various cultural performances in Gauranga Hall and milled about the various tents, eating scrumptious meals by Govinda’s, Houston’s prime vegetarian restaurant, and swinging and bathing Lord Krishna (in His baby form, known as Baal Gopal). This year was made especially wonderful with the presence of the Consul General of India, Dr. Anupam Ray, who took part in every aspect of the celebration from the temple room to the Gauranga Hall stage. After being honored by ISKCON of Houston’s temple president, Dr. Ray appreciated the program and the efforts of both organizations to establish and spread the culture and richness of India’s heritage. As one of the only days in the year where Darshan, or viewing of the deities, is open all day, people were able to see the beautifully decorated Lords, Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava, take part in Kirtan and hear enlightening discourses by HH Rtadhvaja Swami and HG Syamasundara Das. The biggest birthday party of the year culminated in a spiritually charged and inspiring midnight aarti and Kirtan as devotees welcomed their Lords into their hearts. The celebrations continued in ISKCON of Houston’s auditorium, Gauranga Hall, with cultural presentations by the local talent. These performances included dances, vocal and instrumental concerts. Many of Houston’s elite dance and music schools as well as ISKCON of Houston’s very own Sunday School took part in the cultural program with various artistes presenting Kathak, Odissi, Bharatnatyam, vocal and Mrdanga performances. One of the highlights of the evening were the special contests put together by Hindus of Greater Houston and Goswami Academy. The Costume Contest saw more than 125 children of various ages dressed up as characters from Krishna Lila to the delight of many festival goers. The coloring contest conducted by Goswami Academy – saw 70+ children with creative and unique artwork depicting the various stories of the sacred epic, Srimad Bhagavatham. The festival at ISKCON Houston included a scrumptious feast - a perfect ending to a perfect Friday evening! Krishna Kannaiya Lal ki jay! For more information on the temple and the Sunday Feasts, Goswami Academy, Sunday School and other various programs, please visit www.iskconhouston.org or come see us: ISKCON of Houston 1320 W 34th St., Houston TX 77018 or call 713.686. The situation remains fluid in the Kashmir Valley a month since the revocation of the State’s special status on Tuesday. The functioning of government offices, business centres and markets remained dismal even if a few indicators showed signs of normalcy. A stark indicator of the situation is the failure of the Passport office to deliver over 2,000 passports in Kashmir and its inability to receive fresh applications since the August 5 decision of the Centre. The attendance in essential government services like the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, the Public Heath Engineering and the Power Development Department “is yet to cross 50%”, according to official figures. J&K government spokesman Rohit Kansal said, “The attendance is a gradual improvement.” The government, however, takes credit for ensuring that all major hospitals were functioning normally despite unrest on the streets. According to official figures, a toal of 49,000 surgeries, including 200 major surgeries and 2,000 cases of deliveries, were handled in the past four weeks. The attendance of students may be negligible but the registration of students for upcoming Class 10 and Class 12 examination has picked up in all high schools in the Valley. Many schools have decided to keep open administration blocks for two hours, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. “We may not be able to complete the whole syllabus of students this year but the forms are being filled without any compromise. We are hopeful that the state board will draft questionnaire taking into consideration the truncated session this year,” said a principal. The biggest challenge for the government is posed by a near total spontaneous shutdown of markets and the absence of public transport. According to the Kashmir Valley Transporters Association figures, around 50,000 public transport vehicles remain grounded in the Valley since August 5. The inter-State train services also remain suspended. Several markets open early in the morning but shut by 9 a.m. to observe a shutdown. “Shutdown is a peaceful means to register our anger over the government’s move to snatch our special rights,” a shopkeeper at Polo View market said. Around 26,000 telephone lines, mainly used by government officials and offices in the Valley, may be restored but the mobile telephony, the nerve of communication, remain suspended across 10 districts of Kashmir valley, except partial restoration on an experimental basis in Handwara and Kupwara areas. The emergency numbers to dial police, fire services and ambulances also remain out of reach. The internet and telephone lines to the Press Enclave, where most newspapers offices function, remain cut off too. “Due to unprecedented communication blockade, it has crippled and overwhelmingly disabled them from reporting the ground situation,” said Kashmir Press Club vice president Moazam Muhammad. He said hundreds of local and outstation journalists, are forced to stand in queues waiting to file their assignments at the makeshift Media Facilitation Centre in Srinagar. Amit Shah’s assurance For the first time since the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked on August 5, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on September 3 that “only government land would be used to establish industries, hospitals and educational institutions”. He told a delegation from Jammu and Kashmir, comprising sarpanches (village heads) and members of civil society groups, that “nobody’s land would be taken away”. The village heads, who were elected last year, demanded security, with some of them from south Kashmir still living in hotels in Srinagar under police protection as they have not been able to go back to their villages. Participating in the debate in the Rajya Sabha on August 5, Mr. Shah had said no industry could be set up and tourism could not develop in the State because of restrictions on land purchase due to Articles 370 and 35A. Mr. Shah had moved two Bills to revoke the special status under Article 370 and bifurcate and downgrade the State into two Union Territories. After the revocation of special status, residents from the Kashmir Valley and Jammu have expressed concerns and demanded protection of their land, culture and traditions. Mr. Shah also assured the delegation that communication services, including Internet, would be restored in the Valley in the next 20-25 days. He promised to begin recruitment for government jobs at the earliest and said the government would ensure merit-based recruitment of at least five aspirants from each village. He reiterated that the statehood would be restored as soon as the situation warranted, and asked the representatives not to believe any rumors.

COMMUNITY Voice of Specially Abled People, US based non profit gets Special Status with the UN

By MANU SHAH A Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was conferred on Voice of Specially Abled People (VOSAP). The US based non-profit, which received this rare honor in August, is one of four NGOs working in India in the disability sector to have received this status. It marks a huge step forward for the organization which empowers Specially Abled people by pushing for

greater accessibility in public places, economic opportunities, inclusion, and their right to live a life of equality and dignity. Some of the privileges this status brings are opportunities to consult with member states and the UN system, access to UN’s offices in New York, Geneva and Vienna and the use of their facilities. It also enables ECOSOC to tap VOSAP for its expertise. For VOSAP’s Founder T:6”

Pranav Desai who calls this a “milestone achievement,” the cause is very personal. At the age of 4, Desai was stricken with polio and lost the use of both his legs. Tested by daily challenges from climbing stairs (the family lived on the 4th floor for 10 years) to convincing educational institutions to admit him, he credits his parents for never treating him differently from his siblings nor making any particular concessions for

him. This matter-of-fact “acceptance of reality” and his own innate drive, he retrospects, allowed him to believe in himself and make a mark in the mainstream world. Desai’s Engineering and MBA degrees coupled with his expertise in SAP software brought him to the US in 1999. He is currently VP at Nippon Telegraphs and Telephones Data and based out of Los Angeles. Citing his own life as an example, he points to his cane and braces which help him walk, he drives his own car and as Head of Sales travels extensively. He is thankful for these opportunities and his singular goal is to help others achieve the same. VOSAP, the Ahmedabad native explains, is a global team of 8000 plus volunteers who have come together to help Specially Abled people rise above their disabilities. His wife, Usha is a cofounder and the couple’s efforts has already made a significant impact in India with its “Accessible India” campaign. Sharing a unique perspective, Desai says that each of us is “temporarily abled.” One mishap, one misstep or the inevitable process of aging can make us disabled. He emphasizes the importance of coming together to uplift the millions of people whose needs and aspirations are largely ignored due to their disability. The organization’s volunteers reach out to corporations, religious organizations, social and political leaders to “sensitize” them, foster conversations about disability and bring about a greater acceptance for them. Sewing machines, wheel chairs and hearing aids are distributed on a monthly basis, made possible by fundraisers and generous donors. Sparsh Shah, the singing prodigy who was born with the Brittle Bones Disease, is VOSAP’s articulate Youth Ambassador. According to WHO’s statistics, 15% of the world’s population suffers from some disability but India’s figures are dubious due to social stigma, lack of benefits and its vague definition. Some estimates put the number at seven crores. Additionally, special facilities are scarce to non-existent. However, this seems to be changing. When the Modi government came to power in 2014, Desai met the Prime Minister in a one-on-one meeting to work on a comprehensive new law for people with disabilities. When the proposals were presented to Modi after 2 years, it was approved by him in six hours, passed through both the Houses of Parliament and went to the President for his signature all “within 30 days.” The law provides for greater awareness of disability, revised building codes, 4% reservation for public sector jobs, insurance and reimbursed training. Desai is also an Advisor to the Department of Empowerment of People with Disability in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Desai has also created an App (VOSAP) which allows volunteers to photograph a building’s accessibility. The App updates this information using GPS and helps people in wheelchairs find places they can visit based on accessibility ratings and comments. A motivational speaker, Pranav wants to use his voice for the Specially Abled in every part of the world. Be the change maker in your community, he urges, be compassionate and most importantly, be accepting of those with disabilities. Meghana Muralidharan, danced like a pro

Meghana Muralidharan; with guest of honor Soorya Krishnamurthy Meghana Muralidharan, a student of Sunanda’s Performing Arts Center, gave a three-hour solo Bharatanatyam Arangetram performance at the Bayou Theatre UH Clearlake, on Aug. 17. She has been learning the traditional art form of Bharatanatyam, for the last 12 years from Dr. Smt. Sunanda Nair Founder/Director of SPARC in Houston. The accompanying orchestra featured talented artists, Sunanda Nair on nattuvangam, Murali Parthasarathy (vocal), Venkatesan Vedakrishnaram (Mridangam) and Sunil Bhaskar (Violin) and Kalakshetra Mukundan. The audience responded enthusiastically to Meghana’s performance as she displayed her mastery of the nine traditional Arangetram pieces. The program started with a traditional prayer song by Meghana invoking the blessings of Lord Ganesha. Meghana made her entrance with “Bhaja Manasa”, a devotional offering to Ganesha, followed by “Kali Kavithuvam” expressing the powers of Goddess Parvathi, which was followed by “Swami Naan Unthan Adimai” - a varnam that puts the dancer’s skill to test, depicted the devotee’s sentiments pleading against the rejection by Lord Shiva. Post Intermission, Meghana resumed with a padam- “Tha thai endraduvaar” an item bringing out the exquisite dance movements of Lord Shiva, followed by “Keshadi Padam” a popular song dedicated to Lord Krishna which was followed by a Keerthanam

“Maamava Sada Janani” which admires the divine beauty of Parvathi. A folk dance Kavadi Chintu “Valli Kanavan Perai” where Valli reveals her love for Lord Muruga was followed by a Thillana, an elaborate sequence of dance movements followed by Mangalam concluded the arangetram to a prolonged standing ovation from the audience. The guest of honor, Soorya Krishnamoorthy, founder of Soorya Movement, expressing his happiness, said: “I thought that this would be one of the usual arangetams, I frequently attend. But Meghana corrected my thoughts by her almost chiseled perfection in dance. She has all the features and qualities of a good dancer. She is fortunate to have a sensitive and loving guru, Sunanda Nair. Usually gurus who are active on stage as a dancer, do not create good dancers. Here I saw the Guru in tears of happiness and pride when the disciple excelled, to her satisfaction,” Expressing their appreciation, Andy and Gail Spears had this to say “It was an honor to see such a high level of professional presentation of cultural dance and music presented in such grand artful style. We wish great things for her in all her hard work and dedication, as shown in the breath of her performance and stamina in a full 3-hour professional grade production. Meghana is so impressive a dancer with so much breath of dance styles and mastery of artistic movements and stamina. We

were very taken to her delivery all the way through the various performances. I would also like to commend you on bringing in your special guest and incorporating them into the performance as his words touched us as he spoke directly to Meghana. Thanks again for inviting us to such an enriching and heartwarming experience

to truly understand and share your cultural key values conveyed in her traditional dance”. Rajesh Gopinath a friend and a rasika remarked “An excellent arangetram witnessed so far in Houston. Meghana your joyous verve, detailed and exuberant body movements, excellent display of dexterity in footwork, fine flow of costumes in radiant colors were a feast for the eyes. All the dance items were executed with grace and depth of feeling, moving the audience to experience rasa (aesthetic flavor), bhava (emotion), and abhinaya (expression). The striking aspects of your arangetram were your perfect posture, tremendous stamina, dynamic jumps, strong footwork, evocative facial expressions and a great stage presence, plus the presence of a highly accomplished and fabulous live orchestra. Meghana’s dedication and hard work are an inspiration to all and her commitment to the arts is a foundation for her future success. Both Guru and

Shishya’s hard work fetched the distinguishable feathers in the cap. You are an inspiration and motivation for the younger generation.” Rajamani Ganesh another friend and rasika added “Meghana, the way she performed on stage was nothing shy of a professional dancer. Expressive eyes, perfect posture including aramandi and mudras, tremendous stamina, strong footwork and the way she communicated the story by engaging the audience through her expressions to name a few. “Meghana’s hard work under guru Dr. Smt. Sunanda Nair’s guidance was evident throughout the performance. The accompaniment from the visiting orchestra further elevated Meghana’s recital to a mesmerizing performance. The parents Bindhu and Murali along with Meghana’s little sister Maanasa’s support was evident through the entire presentation. Meghana will be a role model for many aspiring dancers.”

COMMUNITY Adhi Gopal’s debut concert presents movie melodies in traditional Carnatic genre By THARA NARASIMHAN The influence of Carnatic Classical music and Ragas on cinema has been deep rooted and many popular songs from the Carnatic traditions were also introduced into film music for a very long time. The recent Carnatic Vocal Concert presented by Adhi Gopal at Bayou Theater, Houston in the presence of August audience was remarkable. It was interestingly a faithful presentation of Carnatic music recital of popular compositions that were melodies founded from classical movies. The ingenuity of the teacher Smt. Rajarajeshwary Bhat to introduce delightfully the space of deep classicism of the Carnatic music and faithfully adhere to its musical tradition of the concert was remarkable. The recital comprised a repertoire of 14 familiar songs enhanced with variable tempo along with added Swaras and Brigas. Smt. Rajarajeshwary Bhat and Kruthi Bhat had nurtured Adhi Gopal’s skills with rigorous training and strict emphasis on undeviating conformity and uncompromising quality. The outstanding accompaniments that included Stalwarts Vittal Ramamurthy on the Violin, B Sivaraman on the Mridangam and N. Guruprasad on the Ghatam made it an uplifting concert and encouraging to the young music enthusiast. Adhi Gopal with meticulous training and his candid efforts to faithfully practice, rendered the concert really well. Jayasurya Dileep accompanied him on the tanpura. The concert commenced with popular number “Vatapi Ganapathim Bhajeham” in Hamsadhwani Raga. This was followed by a composition of famous Carnatic musicologist, GN Balasubramaniam “Saraswathy Namosthute “ in Raga Saraswathy. GNB was also a film artist and active on the silver screen popularizing film songs that were later adapted for Carnatic concerts once they became a hit among moviegoers. From a very young age Adhi was attracted to music and connected himself with it earnestly wanting to learn more as he grew up. The song selections were made to sing the glory of all the Deities at Sri Meenakshi temple, Pearland where he grew up as a child. Listed as the first song of the Pancharathna kriti of Saint Thyagaraja ”Jagath-Ananda Karaka”, meaning Bestower of Happiness in the world. Adhi handled this carefully, followed by Arunachala Kavi’s “Ramanukku Mannan Mudi”, Shiva Siva Enaradha in Pantuvarali. The famous song of the waves “Alai Payuthe Kanna” glorifying Lord Krishna, that carried the message “Waves are flowing, Krishna, my mind is fluttering like waves, listening to the pretty joyful music of your flute” was well presented by the entire team of musicians. Compositions of various composers were presented in Ragas Madhuvanti, Kapi, Revati and Madhyamavati. The Carnatic “Kutcheri” ended with Thillana of Dr.M.Balamuralikrishna and Mangalam in Sowrashtra. US Congressman Randy Weber , who was the chief guest, was impressed with the scintillating music of Vidwan Vittal Ramamurthy’s Violin, the outstanding Thani Avarthanam of Ghatam (Clay Pot) by Vidwan Gurucharan and Mridangam maestro B.Sivaraman. Dr. Gopal and Mala Gopal thanked one and all who made the event possible. Adhi raised funds for three organizations Tamilnadu Foundation, Tamil Studies Chair in U of H, Ududavum Karangal and Houston Youth Music Association (HYMA). The concert Emcees were Akhilan Gopal and Kushal Kadakia. The welcome with live Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of music, art, wisdom, and learning was remarkably presented bestowing Her devesh pathak cpa OL AD 11-2-15.pdf 4 11/2/15 12:07 PM Blessings for all who attended the concert.

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI Anti-Rowlatt stir & Jalianwala Bagh carnage A separate institution named Satyagraha Sabha was formed with headquarters in Bombay. There were agitations everywhere against the Rowlatt Committee’s report. But the government was determined to implement the Rowlatt recommendations and in 1919, the Rowlatt Bill was introduced. When the bill was debated in India’s Legislative Chamber, Gandhi attended as a visitor. Now read on. In spite of the well entrenched opposition from nationalists, the Rowlatt bill became law. At this time, Gandhi got an invitation from activists in Madras to visit the city. He went there, though still weak, along with Mahadev Desai. That was Gandhi’s first meeting with another stalwart of India’s freedom struggle, C. Rajagopalachari. A small conference of leaders was held and Gandhi explained to them the implications of the Rowalatt act. While these talks were being held news was received that the Rowlatt Bill had been published as an act. It was also in Madras that Gandhi first conceived the idea of an all-India hartaal (strike) as the beginning of the satyagraha movement. The leaders at once took up the suggestion and gave much publicity to the forthcoming action. The date was first fixed for March 30, 1919, but was later changed to April 6. The masses had received only short notice for the hartaal, but it turned out to be most successful. That was the first great awakening of India in her struggle towards independence. Gandhi left Madras and went to Bombay to join in the hartaal there on April 6. Meanwhile in Delhi, Lahore, and Amritsar, the hartaal had been observed on March 30. In Delhi the police did not allow free movement to the demonstrators and firing by police caused a number of casualties. Gandhi was requested to go to Delhi and he replied that he would do so after the hartaal in Bombay on April 6. In Bombay the hartaal was a great success. Not a wheel turned in any factory. Not one shop was open. All over India the hartaal was observed. Gandhi had asked the people again and again to be peaceful and not to be provoked to violence by the Government’s actions. In spite of this, violence broke out in many places. There were disturbances in Ahmedabad and also in the Punjab and he decided to go to these places to propagate nonviolence. On the way to the Punjab he was arrested at a wayside station called Palwal and sent back to Bombay. The news of his arrest inflamed the entire population of Bombay. There was an enormous crowd awaiting his arrival there. When he reached Bombay he was set free. The crowd was getting impatient. “Only you can control the crowds,” said a friend to Gandhi.

Sponsored by Houston Arts Alliance in honor Mahatma Gandhi Sesquicentennial Houston celebrations.

Mahatma Gandhi Week is being observed in Houston from September 27 to October 3, 2004. Various activities are being planned, including essay competitions for children, lectures, exhibitions, seminars, etc. This will be done in collaboration with several Houston area Indian and American cultural and religious organizations. For more information, call Atul Kothari at 713-785-3900 or visit www.mahatmagandhi library.org “Come, I shall take you to the spot.” The crowd greeted Gandhi with frenzied joy. A huge procession started but the police barred its progress. A company of mounted police was ordered to charge the crowds. Piercing screams and cries from women and children filled the air as the horsemen plunged forward with lowered lances. People ran to escape the fury of the police. Gandhi was shocked by the police brutality. He went and met the Commissioner. The official was boiling with rage. “We, the police, know better than you the effect of your preaching on the people. If we had not taken drastic measures the situation would have gone out of our hands. I have no doubt about your intentions, but the people do not understand them. They only follow their natural instincts.” “The people are not violent by nature; they are peaceful,” said Gandhi. “You wanted to go to the Punjab,” said the Commissioner. “Do you know what is happening in Ahmedabad, the Punjab, and Delhi? You are responsible for all these disturbances.” Gandhi was pained to hear of the disturbances and said that he would certainly take the responsibility upon himself if he was convinced that it was his. Gandhi went to Ahmedabad. On the way he learned in detail about the happenings there. Ahmedabad was under martial law. A police officer was waiting for him at the railway station to escort him to the Commissioner. This commissioner too was in a rage. Gandhi expressed his regret for the disturbances and promised complete cooperation in restoring peace. Gandhi then asked for permission to hold a public meeting on the grounds of the Sabarmati

Ashram. The officer liked the idea. At the meeting Gandhi announced with great sorrow the suspension of civil disobedience. He said he would fast for three days as a penance and he appealed to all the people to fast for one day. He asked those who were guilty of violence to confess their guilt. He expressed his regret at having started civil disobedience too early without giving sufficient training to the people. “I have made a Himalayan miscalculation,” he said. Many people jeered at Gandhi for saying that. Many of his friends and followers were furious at his stopping satyagraha. Gandhi then started teaching people the true meaning of satyagraha and how it should be conducted. Through writing and speeches he wanted to drive home to the people the essence of his new creed. In the Punjab the situation was very critical. It was true that there were disturbances on the part of the people, but the measures adopted by the Government to check the disturbances were too severe. The leaders were trying to keep the people peaceful, but the stem measures of repression taken by the authorities had few parallels in history. In Amritsar the people were not allowed to move about freely. A proclamation was issued forbidding all gatherings and meetings. Only a few had the chance to know about the proclamation, however, because it was not announced widely, and it was made only in English. It was announced that a meeting was to be held in a garden called Jallianwala Bagh, to protest against the Government's actions. General Dyer took no measures to prevent the meeting. He reached the place soon after the meeting began and he took with him armored cars and troops. Without giving any warning he ordered, “Fire till the bullets are finished.” The garden was surrounded by walls and buildings and had only one exit. At the first shot the exit was jammed and there was no hope of escape for the crowd. There were between eight and ten thousand people attending the meeting. The soldiers fired 1600 rounds into that unarmed mass of people. Once a park, Jallianwala Bagh was now a scene of the most brutal massacre of hundreds. — To be continued

Pressure cook with the turmeric powder, salt and 3 cups of water for 4 to 5 whistles or until the dal is cooked. Heat the ghee in a pan, add onion, cloves, cinnamon and red chillies and sauté till onion turns golden. Add the ginger-garlic paste, green chillies and chilli powder and sauté for 2 mts. Add this to the cooked dal and boil for 4 to 5 mts. Serve hot, garnished with cilantro and the ginger strips. Time 40 mins. Serves 4 to 6.

Hariyali Rice

Ingredients: 1-1/2 cups rice, 1-1/2 cups chopped cilantro; 4 peppercorns, 1-inch piece cinnamon,

4 cloves, 4 green cardamoms, 2 onions, sliced; 2 tbsp oil, salt. For the garnish: 1/4 cup onion slices, browned. Method: Wash and soak the rice for about 10 mts. Drain and

keep aside. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker and add the peppercorns, cinnamon, cloves, green cardamom and onions and saute till the onions turn translucent. Add the rice and saute for a few mts. Add 3 cups of hot water and salt and pressure cook till the rice is tender. Remove from the fire and add the chopped coriander. Mix well using a fork so the rice grains do not break. Garnish with the browned onion slices and serve hot. Time 25 mins. Serves 4.

Masala Chawli

Ingredients: 1/3 cup chawli beans (lobhia or black eyed beans), 1/2 cup onions, finely chopped; 2 tomatoes, puréed; 1/4 tsp dry (kasuri) methi leaves, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 2 tbsp oil, salt. Grind to a paste 3/4 cup mint leaves, 1 tsp grated ginger, 2 to 3 green chillies, 1/4 tsp lemon juice. Method: Clean, wash and soak the chawli beans for at least 2 hours. Pressure cook the chawli beans with water till they are cooked. Drain and keep aside. Heat the oil in a pan, add the onions and sauté till they turn golden brown. Add the puréed tomatoes, kasuri methi, turmeric powder and salt and cook over a slow flame till the oil has separated from the gravy. Add the cooked chawli and ½ cup of water and simmer for 4 to 5 mts. Add the prepared paste and mix well and cook for another 2 to 3 mts. Serve hot. Time 40 mins. Serves 3 to 4. Lobhia beans are called "Chawli" in Hindi and that is where this dish gets its name. Chawli beans are served in a gravy that is flavoured with tomatoes, mint and kasuri methi.
