Free parking at NRG Stadium for Howdy Modi event
Filling the giant NRG stadium to capacity, an estimate 50,000 Indian Americans will celebrate the tremendous success of Indian-Americans in the US and the deepening US-India ties at “Howdy Modi” community summit on Sept. 22 with the visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The turnout is expected to be the largest for any Indian Prime Minister in North America and the largest for a democratically elected foreign leader in America. In anticipation, the Texas India Forum will be providing free parking onsite at the stadium for all attendees. In addition to free parking, buses will be provided to transport attendees from vari-

ous locations around the greater Houston area. New registrants are now on a waiting list for the event, although registration for university students will be open till August 29th.
The event, titled “Shared Dreams, Bright Future”, will showcase the strength and clout of the IndianAmerican community, dubbed as “model” immigrants in the US as they are considered by policy experts to be the most
highly educated and successful community in America. “The Indian-Americans are not simply just an educated and wealthy community today but have fast become an organized, powerful voting bloc with a uni-
fied voice, with national political and policy aspirations. The impact of the community today is palpable in American politics and business,” said Gitesh Desai, spokesperson for the event. According to Pew Research, median annual household income for Indian Americans in 2010 was $88,000, much higher than for all Asian Americans ($66,000) and all U.S. households ($49,800). Indian-Americans also form the second largest group of physicians after non-Hispanic whites (3.9%) according to the 1990 survey of Pew Research. “The Indian-American community has arrived,” according to Devesh Kapur, the director of the Center for the Advanced Study of India at the University of Pennsylvania. “There’s a part of it which is about Modi, the rock-star politician. But it’s also a signal by the community to the politicians here in the U.S. to take them seriously,” according to his interview to Time magazine. “The economic impact of Indian-Americans has grown considerably in the last few decades as they have become a major force in technology and innovation, financial services, banking, oil & gas, energy, chemicals, and pipelines. In addition to being leading business leaders and job creators, Indian Americans are also playing vital roles in medicine, philanthropy, arts, media, education, and space. The rise of IndianAmericans today is intricately woven into the rise of America,” said Desai. And this is what will be celebrated at the “Howdy Modi” event which reflects an extraordinary strong community involvement with more than 1000 volunteers and 650 Welcome Partner organizations from across the United States. “It is a testament for their passion for India, their success in the United States, the power of the community to come together, and their contribution and hopes for the US-India bond to continue to prosper in future,” said Rishi Bhutada, spokesperson for the event. In addition to free parking, buses will be provided to transport attendees from various locations around the greater Houston area. Impugned Indian American charity hits back; Article paints Tulsi Gabbard as RSS stooge
By SESHADRI KUMAR Pieter Friedrich is an activist and journalist. The August Issue of “The Caravan” magazine published from India, carried a cover story by Pieter Friedrich titled “All in the Family: The American Sangh’s affair with Tulsi Gabbard.” It was an elaborate hit piece on Tulsi Gabbard’s presidential bid, devoting about 25 pages to describe various Hindus who are associated with various Hindu organizations in the U.S. and painting Gabbard as a nominee of the right wing Hindu nationalists. These Hindu activists in their capacity as American nationals exercise their right to politicians and political parties of their choice. Moreover, Gabbard is a self-avowed practitioner of Hindu religion and she took her oath of office on the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita. For decades leftists have been attacking Hindu groups in the U.S. equating them with Hindu right wing extremists as they do with the Republicans in the U.S. It is ironical that the leftist-activists did not find fault when the same right wing Hindus contributed to President Barack Obama’s campaign or
other Democratic Party candidates. This article is a compilation of attacks on the Hindu groups over the last two decades. No impropriety, illegality or unethical behavior has been established by the author, other than repeating the allegations made elsewhere. To be fair to The Caravan magazine, the article had a disclaimer at the end: “The writer has participated in protests and organizing for civil rights and minority causes in the United States, including with South Asian organizations opposing the Hindutva.” So much for the credibility and integrity of the author and article. Interestingly, the article elicited some critical response from readers on the magazine’s website www.caravanmagazine.in One person wrote: “Pieter perhaps still thinks that it is 1920, and we are little brown Indians who will get impressed with his European name and suck up the drivel that he has written, while nodding our heads solemnly.” One Dhruba Sen wrote: This author is a vicious anti Hindu religious bigot and masquerades as an Indian / Hindu ex-

Here are a few reasons for the same: Tulsi Gabbard is a left leaning politician in her fiscal, economic, social and foreign policy views. What ideological motive of the right wing and right leaning conservative “American Sangh” is served by backing a candidate often considered even to the left of Bernie Sanders? “Some Hindus and Hindu groups may have supported Gabbard on ethnic grounds since she is a rare candidate from that community/religion
to run for U.S. president. IDRF President Dr. Vinod Prakash from North Bethesda, MD, wrote a letter to the editor of The Caravan on Aug. 15. Dr. Vinod Prakash said in his letter: “ I write to protest the inclusion of my personal information, and biased, outdated and false information about the organization I head – India Development and Relief Fund, Inc., USA (IDRF) – in the article by Pieter Friedrich published in the August 2019 issue. Your reporter did not contact us to either inquire about the nature and intent of IDRF work or for clarification about my own life – information that he might have found useful for objective and unbiased reporting. Also, your reporter has not bothered to inform the readers of the nearly four decades of dedicated effort that my wife and I have made in raising funds for the betterment of the marginalized in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. We have extended aid and support to all without discriminating on the basis of religion, gender or caste. The information your reporter presents about IDRF is nearly two decades old, and is based solely on the smear campaign against us led by avowed Left/ Marxist anti-Hindu forces who have made it their agenda to diminish, if not destroy the reputation and work of people like me and organizations like IDRF. To the best of my knowledge, there was no investigation launched by the United States Justice Department as claimed by your reporter. In fact, the US corporations, including Cisco and Oracle, resumed their gift-matching programs with IDRF soon after. In 2003, in response to the allegations, a team of six Indian-American academicians conducted a thorough investigation and published their report, “IDRF: Let the Facts Speak”, concluding that the allegations against IDRF by the Left/Marxist activists were false and malicious. “ Moreover, the Government of India investigated the allegations mentioned in the 2002 Sabrang Communication report, and issued a letter dated August
30, 2003 addressed to the Ambassador of India to the United States, Lalit Mansingh , saying, “We have got the credentials and bonafides of this organization (IDRF) verified and found them to be sound. Also, the work carried out by them and their associates in India has been put to test and have to place on record that we have not found anything objectionable/dubious in their activities. As such request to you to inform all concerned accordingly”. “Unlike the unverifiable antecedents and qualifications of your reporter, our work is done in the glare of the public eye, and information about our organization is audited by professionals and presented to the public every year (please refer www.idrf.org). We are proud to share that IDRF has been awarded “4 out of 4 stars” for six consecutive years by Charity Navigator, the premier evaluator of nonprofits in the United States, as IDRF demonstrates strong financial health, commitment to transparency and accountability. IDRF’s commitment to financial transparency has also led it to be recognized as a “Platinum-level recipient” by Guide Star -- the world’s largest source of information on nonprofit organizations in the United States. In recognition of IDRF’s outstanding contributions, independent reviews from donors, volunteers, and beneficiary-NGOs, another evaluating agency – Great Nonprofits -- has placed IDRF in the “Top-Rated Charity with 5 stars” category. As a result, more than 75 businesses and corporations allow their employees to contribute to IDRF and double their employee contributions for our development programs. “Your reporter does not seem to be interested in knowing the facts and the complete truth about IDRF. The report published in Caravan is therefore a glaring example of malicious journalism, driven by agendas that not only mislead the readers but will also make the world an even more conflicted place.” Vijay Pallod, a Houstonian, who is quoted in the article, says: “I am disappointed with Pieter’s recent article where he has written wrong information about the IDRF. During my interview he did not ask for any clarification about the IDRF, but covered the old allegations.”

India Fest 2019
India Culture Center of Houston, with affiliated organizations, celebrated India’s 73rd Independence Day on Aug. 18 at the Stafford Center on Cash Road in Stafford. Billed as India Fest, the event drew a wide audience from the mainstream as well as the Indian American community, celebrating the spirit of India’s independence. There were 60 vendor booths, attracting visitors, while a variety of cultural programs kept the audience engaged. The formal program included scholarship awards to three winners, in memory of three past presidents of ICC - Keshubhai Patel, Dr. Satish Jhingran, and Harshad Patel. Karan Patel, the first Indian American to be drafted to a Major League Baseball team, Chicago White Sox was specially recognized. Patel’s parents and grandmother accepted the memento on behalf of the 22-year-old cricket and baseball player from Fort Bend County, ICC board member Ajit Patel prepared a special exhibit of Modi’s portrait and also crafted a welcome arch to announce the impending visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Houston on Sept. 22. This special exhibit of the life-size portrait of Modi quickly became a much photographed selfie spot. ICC President Nisha Mirani savored the successful event and attributed it to “co-ordination, cooperation & collaboration.” She congratulated Pramod Bengani for chairing the I Fest 2019 celebration, stating that “we received positive comments from the community” and added her appreciation for Nimish Sheth and Sapna Shah’s efforts in coordinating with local dance schools to showcase India’s vibrant culture in the cultural segment. The Kahoot Live Quiz, coordinated by Santosh and Hemantbhai contributed to the overwhelming success of the show, she said. Mirani made a special mention of Eesha Dhairyawan and Arjun Singhal who sang the Indian and American National Anthems respectively. The formal program was emceed by Neera Patel. Stafford Mayor Leonard Scarcella presented a proclamation honoring ICC’s India Fest celebrating India’s Independence Day. Ek Sham Desh Ke Nam - a musical segment was well received by the audience. Harmony Group with Rex D’Souza and Shilpi Paul, who performed for two and a half hours with their talented musicians, energized the crowd to dance at the patriotic songs. Darshak Thakkar, sound engineer, provided able support for the musical evening while photographer Navin Mediwala took the pictures.

Blissful chanting of Maha Rudram at Meenakshi Temple
By M.K.Sriram This is the eleventh consecutive year that Sri Meenakshi Temple has conducted the divine and powerful Sri Rudra Japam and Homam for the benefit of the entire Houston community. Hundreds of devotees participated in this two day festival. More than 50 ‘ritwiks’ from different parts of Houston and some from as far away as Dallas, chanted this sacred Vedic mantra over three sessions on Saturday Aug. 17th and Sunday Aug. 18th at the Main temple. The event started on Saturday, Aug. 17th at 9 am. The preliminary pujas started with Vigneshwara puja, Punyahavachanam (purification) and Kalasa stapanam (invocation). This year, the Kalasam was filled with the holy waters of Lake Manasarovar at the foothills of the Kailash Mountain in Tibet, which had been specially brought by devotees who travelled there in June 2019. Next, the all-powerful Mahanyasam chanting was led by the priests to invoke Lord Rudra in every part of their body and mind. For the next 3 hours, the ritwiks chanted Sri Rudram, eleven times, each time followed by an anuvakam of Chamakam. Hundreds of devotees were held in a trance while the Vedic mantra was chanted in unison. The whole atmosphere was filled with the strength and power of Sri Rudram. The second session started at 5 pm, with the continuation of the Rudram chanting. The
priests and ritwiks performed this divine prayer with utter concentration and devotion, and the temple resonated with the mantra. The evening session concluded with Rudra Trishati archana, a spectacular arathi and upacharam. Devotees and ritwiks gathered again on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 18th to continue the chanting of Sri Rudram, the greatest Vedic offering to Lord Shiva. Goddess Meenakshi being the Veda Matha was surely smiling with happiness upon hearing the Veda ghosham in the temple. The Rudra Homam was then performed with meticulous detail with the priests making the
offerings to the Fire with the chanting of Sri Rudram. The final part of the Homam was the Vasodhara which was performed to the chant of the Chamakam. This was followed by Purnahuthi. The priests then led a procession with the holy kalasams on their heads, around the deities in the Main temple. An elaborate Abhishekam was performed for Lord Sundareswara that was witnessed by over 400 devotees. The curtains were drawn briefly for Alankaram, and when they opened up again, Lord Sundareswara, in His most majestic form, gave darshan to the devotees. The devotees were engulfed by the power of the Lord. The
final Arathi and Upacharam were very remarkable. While the abhishekam with waters from Manasarovar was in progress, the heavens miraculously opened up and the rains poured. Kailasa Nathan’s divine presence and blessings were most definitely felt. A wide variety of prasadams (offerings) were lovingly prepared by the devotees in their homes. More than 400 people had a sumptuous lunch. All in all, this was a most divine and blissful event that was well organized and conducted by the Temple under the leadership of the Chairman of the Board Dr. Padmini Nathan, the Religious Activity Committee led by
Sheila Sriram, Priests Manicka Bhattar, Kalyana Sundaram, Balaji and Parameshwaran ably supported by other priests, silpis (artisans) and staff of the temple. The event coordinator Sri Muthukumar and other volunteers put in countless hours of work and coordination. The Shankaracharya of Kanchi personally blessed this event and sent prasadams to be distributed to the devotees. Many devotees and ritwiks could not help wondering if this was actually happening in the US, or in India. The prayer “Om Namo Bhagavathe Rudraya” still reverberates in their hearts.

Janmashtami celebrated at Sri Govindaji Gaudiya Math
On August 23rd, Sri Govindaji Gaudiya Matha, located in Northwest part of Houston celebrated Sri Krishna Janmashtami, the Divine Appearance Day of Lord Sri Krishna. The festivities started a week earlier with Srimad Bhagavat Katha saptah (7 days of discourses on Srimad Bhagavatam) on August 17th. The saptah was organized as part of the worldwide celebrations in preparation for the Centennial year (2021) of His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Goswami Maharaja. Srila Narayana Maharaja is the founder of International Pure Bhakti Yoga Society, a global Gaudiya Vaishnava religious organization that the Houston Gaudiya Math is part of. Of the several Centennial initiatives planned, one is organizing Bhagavat Katha Saptahs in 108 cities worldwide. The katha in Houston was conducted by His Holiness Sri Bhaktivedanta Siddhanti Maharaja. He spoke about the fifty transcendental qualities of Lord Sri Krishna by providing many pastimes and examples from Srimad Bhagavatam. On the day of Janmashtami, devotees started by attending Mangal Aarti at 5:30 a.m. Everyone was enchanted by the oncea-year special adhivaas darshan of the Deities of Sri Radha Govindaji, Sri Gaur Nitai and Sri Sita Rama Laxman Hanuman in beige and white cotton dhotis and saris. After the Mangal Aarti, the Deities were dressed in a beautiful new dress that had just arrived from Vrindavan. The Deities on the altar, decorated with colorful flowers, looked transcendentally resplendent in Their red and blue new dress. It was hard to take once eyes off from Their pristine beauty. Throughout the day the devotees were engaged in chanting of Hare Krishna mahamantra, singing bhajans and performing various services in preparation for the main celebration in the evening. Dozens of ladies worked in the kitchen for hours preparing prasadam for everyone who would visit the Temple. The entire Temple was beautifully decorated with colorful lights and flowers to welcome the Lord on His Divine Appearance Day. And through the day people kept streaming into the Temple to take darshans of Their Lordships. The main program started in the evening at 6:30 p.m. with chanting of Mangalacharan and prayers to the spiritual masters. The main attraction of the evening was the world famous bhajan group, ‘The Kirtaniyas’. Sandhya (evening) Aarti was performed at 7 p.m. with Vijay Krishna prabhu from the Kirtaniyas leading the singing. Over 500 devotees gathered in the large Temple room sang and danced with great devotion. After the aarti, Vishnu prabhu explained about the Centennial celebrations and then Srila Bhaktivedanta Siddhanti Maharaja spoke about Lord Krishna’s quality of loving reciprocation with His devotees. He said that Krishna recognizes even a small service done to Him and reciprocates by ensuring that His devotees are always protected. Later he also explained the deep esoteric secrets behind the appearance of Sri Krishna in Mathura as well as in Gokula. The Kirtaniyas performed ecstatic kirtan for several hours and many times everyone stood up and started to dance enchanted by the enlivening kirtan. Malini Dasi from the Kirtaniyas group performed an exquisite Bharat Natyam dance on Jayadeva Gosami’s Mangal-Gitam. Also, there were dance performances by Vedic Sunday School children. Around 11 p.m, a grand abhishek was performed of the vijayvigraha Deities of Sri Sri Radha Govindaji and Yahoda Gopal. Several devotees had brought their Laddu Gopal deities also and abhishek was performed for Them as well. After abhishek the Deities were taken inside closed curtains for dressing and offering of Bhoga while devotees continued to chant ecstatically eagerly waiting for the Lord’s Appearance at midnight. Sharp at 12 a.m. the curtains opened with blowing of the conchshells and the temple room packed with hundreds of devotees burst into a rapturous chanting of the Holy Names. After welcoming the Lord with the final ecstatic kirtan that nobody really wanted to stop, everyone broke their fast with caranamritam and partook of the sumptuous feast. Over 2,000 Houstonians visited the Temple and enthralled by the divine experience everyone is already looking forward to another ecstatic Janmashtami celebration next year as well as the Radhashtami celebration on September 6th at 6:30 p.m. Sri Govindaji Gaudiya Matha temple is located at 16628 Kieth Harrow Blvd, Houston, TX 77084. India’s independence day should be Oct. 21, not Aug. 15, says ex-army general
By SESHADRI KUMAR Independence day of India is not Aug. 15, but Oct. 21, 1943 when Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose formed a provisional government in Singapore and fought to get Indian independence with the help of Indian National Army and River Saraswati is not a mythological river. These unorthodox statements were the crux of two lectures delivered by Major Gen. (retd.) G. D. Bakshi in Houston on Aug. 18. He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal for commanding a battalion in the Kargil War. Later, he was awarded the Sena Medal for distinguished service in commanding a battalion during counter-terrorism drives. He First, he addressed a meeting of the Hindu Memorial Day on the topic “Who Really Got India Its Freedom?” He has authored the book “Bose: An Indian samurai.” Bakshi, a decorated Indian Army veteran, author and public speaker, said that the Gandhi led Indian National Congress was the principal freedom movement for India’s liberation from British colonialism. is a common myth. Bakshi followed by a speech from Gen G.D. Bakshi on Saraswati Civilization. It is the oldest living civilization on the face of the planet and Saraswati River is not a myth, Bakshi said. Carbon dating has shown the ruins of Harappa and Birhana to be over 9500 years old. In Rig Veda, 72 slokas refer to Saraswati river. In 1970, US Landsat satellite transmitted 100s of pictures of the dry Saraswati River bed, he said. India’s own Remote Sensing Satellite indicated that River Sraswati was 4,600 km long and 6 to 8 kms wide. What sets the Indic civilization apart is the origin of Indic civilization on the banks of River Saraswati. Also it is Vedic civilization. The National Council on
Education Research and Training should revise history text books and delete the Aryan invasion theory and confirm River Saraswati as the cradle of Indian Civilization, according to Bakshi. The Triveni Sangam is made of three rivers; Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Among these, the river Saraswati is invisible. It is said that this river flows underground and joins the above two rivers from below. Their point of confluence is at Allahabad, which is a sacred place for Hindus. Satellite photographs have now shows us the whole dried out course of the Sarasvati river. And 60 to 80% of the Indus valley sites were not on the Indus but the dried out course of the Sarasvati river that is the cradle river of the Indic civilization. Deep in the western Rajasthan desert, not far from border with Pakistan, in Jaislamer an extraordinary program is underway. Giant drilling rigs probe deep into the dry, arid earth pulling out undisturbed layers of soil and sediment for scientists to study and test. Water engineers are exploring the region’s ancient riverbeds for what they call groundwater . The level of cultural continuity is amazing. True to the patriotic roots inherent in Arya Samaj, the event was prefaced by flag hoisting to mark the 73rd Independence Day of India. It was a delight to see and hear little children of the Vedic Sanskriti School rendering patriotic songs unmindful of the hot sun. According to classical Vedic system, the occasion was Vedarambha Sansakara and Vedopadesham. Traditionally when a child was taken by the parents to the Acharya of a Gurukula, the first lesson of the Gayatri Mantra was called Vedarambha. The ceremony began with the auspicious Havan and special chanting of the Gayatri Mantra, followed by Vedopadesham – the blessings of the Vedic wisdom by Acharya Harish Chandra. There was an elaborate system of education in human society, in which education is the exclusive privilege for humans. Vedic Sanskriti School’s aim is to make a child ‘a good human being’ whatever be the profession, and motivate them to become a Devata. The spiritual principles are conveyed convincingly to become a part of the evidencebased science as opposed to
faith-based religions. The uncompromisingly rational approach of Arya Samaj even with regard to spirituality won a large number of hearts. Many young parents see the advantage in imparting it to their children. This was attested by the experiences shared by the children and parents. The remarks made by Dr. Shraddha Mukherjee based on her firsthand experience as a volunteer teacher echoed much of what was felt by the fraternity of the Sanskriti School. Soumil Goyal, a 13-year-old has been attending the Sanskriti School for four years and spoke extempore in chaste Hindi sharing a multitude of treasures he has unearthed in the school. The Sanskriti School, an integral part of Arya Samaj Greater Houston, functions as an interwoven close-knit family nurtured by its director Dr. Kavita Vachaknavee. Its weekly session on Sunday morning covers Naitik Shiksha (moral instruction), Hindi conversation and a subject chosen by the child from an array of electives such as Music, Dance, Tabla, Yoga, Arts, Instrumental, and Hindi Read & Write. Two new electives were announced starting this year: Leadership Skills and Public Speaking. New parents heard a quick overview of the Sanskriti School and the Arya Yuva Mandal (AYM), the umbrella body of Arya Samaj Houston

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI Gandhi backs resolution on war recruiting
Days passed. The mill owners were adamant. The strikers were getting impatient for they were faced with starvation. Their discipline became weak. Gandhi feared that some workers would break their pledge and go back to work. That would be a great moral defeat. One morning he called the workers and said, “Unless the strikers rally and continue the strike till a settlement is reached, I will not touch any food.” The workers were shocked. “Not you, but we shall fast,” they said. “Please forgive us for our lapse; we shall remain faithful to our pledge.” Gandhi did not want anybody else to fast. His fast was not against the mill owners, but against the lack of coordination and unity among the workers. The fast lasted only three days. It influenced the mill owners so much that they came to an agreement with the workers. Hardly was the mill workers’ strike over, when Gandhi had to plunge into the Kheda satyagraha struggle. The Kheda district of Gujarat was on the verge of a severe famine. Crop yield had been so low that the cultivators, especially the poor farmers, were unable to pay the revenue. But the government insisted that the yield had not been so bad and that the cultivators should pay the tax. Gandhi saw the injustice advised the farmers to offer satyagraha by not paying their taxes. Leaders, like Vallabhbhai Patel, Shankarlal Banker, Mahadev Desai and others took an active part in this struggle. There had been signs that the campaign might fizzle out, but after four months’ struggle there was an honorable settlement. The government asked rich farmers to pay and granted relief to poor farmers. The Kheda satyagraha marked the beginning of an awakening among the peasants of Gujarat, the beginning of their true political education. In addition it gave to the educated public workers the chance to establish contact with the actual life of the peasants. During this time the war had entered a critical phase. Britain and France were in a difficult position. In the spring of 1917 Germvy had inflicted crushing defeats on both the British and French troops in France. Russia's war effort had broken down and the Revolution was threatening its Government. Though America had entered the war, no American troops had yet reached the battle-front. The Viceroy of India, Lord Chelmsford, invited various Indian leaders to attend a War Conference. Gandhi was also invited. He accepted the invitation and went to Delhi. Gandhi was not happy that leaders like Tilak or the Ali brothers had not been invited to the conference, so he was un- willing to attend. only one sentence: “With a full sense of my responsibility I beg to support the resolution.” Gandhi had supported going to war! Many of his friends were taken aback. Some said, “You are a votary of ahimsa, how can you ask us to take up arms?” Others said, “What good has the government done to India to deserve our cooperation?” Even some of his best friends could not understand how he could reconcile his war effort with his campaign for ahimsa. But Gandhi stuck to the belief he held at that time that “absolutely unconditional and wholehearted cooperation with the government by the educated Indians will bring India within sight of our goal of Swaraj as nothing else will.” Gandhi had made his decision and he now set out to implement it. The response to recruit went was not in any way encouraging, but Gandhi was determined to carry out his mission. He held meetings. He issued leaflets asking people to enlist in the forces. His steady work began to bear fruit. Many men were recruited and he hoped to get a bigger response as soon as the first batch had been sent. Gandhi nearly ruined his health during the recruiting campaign. He worked very hard. He could not take his food at regular times, nor could he take enough nourishment to keep up his energy. He had an attack of dysentery. He refused to take medicine and his condition became worse and worse. Friends tried their best to advise him but he was beyond all advice. He passed restless days and nights and he himself felt at times that he was near death's door. It took him a long time to regain his health, but before then news came that the war (World War I) was over. Germany had been completely defeated. Friends and doctors advised him to go away for a change and recover his health. He went to Matheran, but the place did not suit him. He went to Poona, where a doctor was consulted. He advised him to take milk to rebuild his body, and prescribed some medicine. Gandhi took the medicine but he would not agree to
take milk, for he had given up milk years before. But Kasturbai said, “You gave up cow’s milk and buffalo’s milk. You cannot object to taking goat’s milk.” The doctor agreed. “If you will take goat's milk it will be good enough,” he said and Gandhi agreed to take goat’s milk. Gandhi returned to Ahmedabad. He was recouping his health there when he read in the papers the Rowlatt Committee’s report which had just been published. The committee recommended that for the maintenance of peace, the government could arrest any person without a warrant and detain him for any length of time without any trial or right to appeal. Thus, the law was a direct attack on the ordinary civil liberties of the people and a clear indication of the autocratic and barbarous tendencies of the British rule in India. These recommendations startled Gandhi. He described them as “unjust, subversive of the principles of liberty and justice, and destructive of the elementary rights of individuals.” Friends approached him for guidance. “Something must be done,” he said to them. “If the proposed measures are passed into law, we ought to offer satyagraha.” Gandhi lamented the fact that he was in poor health; otherwise he would have given battle against the amendments alone. From his sick-bed he wrote articles for the Indian papers explaining that the proposed bill was an act of tyranny which no self-respecting people could submit to it. The only possible step against the government’s proposal, Gandhi thought, would be to launch a satyagraha movement in right earnest. A meeting of some of the leaders was called at the ashram and a satyagraha pledge was drafted. It was signed by everybody present. Gandhi did not believe that the existing institutions could handle such a noble weapon, so a separate institution named Satyagraha Sabha was formed with headquarters in Bombay. There were agitations everywhere against the Rowlatt Committee’s report. But the government was determined to implement the Rowlatt recommendations and in 1919, the Rowlatt Bill was introduced. When the bill was debated in India’s Legislative Chamber, Gandhi attended as a visitor. — To be continued.

Potato pancakes
Ingredients: 1/4 cup flour, 1 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg powder, 2 eggs, beaten; 1 onion, grated, 3 tsp. chopped cilantro, 2 lb potatoes, Butter, pepper
add cumin When it splutters add onion, garlic, ginger and green chillies, fry till onions are light brown. Add potatoes, turmeric and salt. Mix and fry for 2-3 minutes. Add coriander leaves and remove from fire.
Kerala potato stew
Method: Sift flour, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Make a wall and add eggs, onion and cilantro, stir until well mixed. Grate potatoes, strain all liquid off. Add this mixture to batter and beat with a wooden spoon. Melt 2 oz of butter and drop tablespoons of batter into the heated pan, flatten lightly. Fry over moderate heat until golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper and keep hot until served.
Achaar Aloo Ingredients: 1 lb baby potatoes, 1-1/2 cup sliced onion, 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste, 1 tbsp coriander powder, 1/2 cup yogurt, 4 tbsp oil, 10-15 long yellow or green chillies or as per taste, salt. Powder the following together, 1 tsp fenugreek (methi) seeds, 1 tsp kalonji (onion seeds), 1-1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 2 tsp mustard seeds. Method: Boil and peel the potatoes. Mix with curds, gingergarlic paste and salt. Keep aside for a half hour. Slit the chillies. Heat oil in a kadai and fry onions till light brown. Add the chillies and the potatoes and cook till the liquid dries up. Continue to cook till potatoes are well roasted. Add the masala powder. Fry for 1 minute. Add ½ cup hot water and simmer for 5 minutes and remove from fire. *Powdering such small quantity in a mixer may not be possible. So, powder about four times the given amount and store the remaining for use later.
Jeera Aloo
Ingredients: 1 lb potatoes, 1 med. onion, 4 cloves garlic, 1-inch piece of ginger, 3-4 green chillies, 4 tbsp oil, 1 tbsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, a fistful of chopped cilantro. Method: Boil, peel and cut potatoes into 2 cm cubes. Peel the onion and cut into quarters and slice each portion thinly. Slice garlic and ginger into thin strips. Slice chillies into thin rounds. Heat oil,
Ingredients: 1 lb potatoes, 1 med. coconut, 6 to 8 green chillies, slit; 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1 tsp grated ginger, salt. Method: Boil, peel and lightly crush the potatoes. (Some of them will be mashed and some will remain as small pieces). Grate the coconut and extract 1 cup thick milk and 2 cups of thin milk. Combine green chillies, onion and ginger with thin milk. Heat until boiling, reduce the flame and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Add potatoes and salt, simmer for 2 more minutes. Add the thick coconut milk and just as it begins to boil, switch off the flame. Serves 4
Kashmiri Dum Aloo
Ingredients: 1 lb baby potatoes, 1/2 tsp garam masala, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp chilli powder, 1-inch ginger, minced; 1 tsp dry ginger powder, salt, oil to fry. For Seasoning: 5 tbsp oil, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 3 cloves, 3 green chillies, chopped; a pinch of hing, chopped cilantro to garnish. Method: Boil and peel the potatoes, prick all over with a fork and deep fry in hot oil till brown. Add garam masala, chilli powder, fresh and dry ginger, sugar and salt. Mix well and keep aside. Heat oil for seasoning in a kadai, add the seasoning ingredients, fry for few seconds, add the potatoes. Add ½ cup of water, and simmer till dry.
Peas and potato
Ingredients: 1/2 lb potatoes, 1 cup cooked green peas, 3 tbsp oil, 4 cloves, 2 small pieces of cinnamon, 1/2 cup chopped onions, 6 green chillies, or to taste, slit; 1/ 2 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes, 2 tbsp besan, salt, fistful of chopped cilantro. Method: Boil, peel and cut potatoes into 2 cm cubes. Heat oil, add cloves and cinnamon. After few seconds, add onion and green chillies. Fry till onions are light brown. Add turmeric powder and tomatoes. Cover and simmer till the tomatoes are soft. Add 1 ½ cups of water, potatoes, peas and salt. Mix besan with ½ cup water and add to the bhaji. Allow to boil, lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Sprinkle coriander leaves on top. Serve hot with puri/chapathi.
