Houston gears up to host mega rally for Prime Minister Narendra Modi

By SESHADRI KUMAR Houstonians will host a community summit in honor of visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sept. 22. The mega event billed as “Howdy Modi!” is being organized by Texas India Forum, a not-for-profit organization. Well-known Indian community leader in Houston, Jugal Malani, has been named convenor of the “Howdy Modi” organizing committee. “We have seen a tremendous outpouring of support from the community for the Prime Minister’s visit. We are very grateful for the immediate cooperation that we are getting from organizations representing all parts of the Indian diaspora here,’’ Malani said. More than 400 Indian community organizations have signed up to be “Welcome Partners” and the organizers have extended the deadline for welcome partners sign up until Saturday. Attendance at the event will be free, but passes will required. Passes can be obtained only by registering at the website www. howdymodi.org. The costs of this event will be covered by donations from the general public. This will be Modi’s first visit to Houston as prime minister and that too after his landslide victory in the recent elections. When Modi was general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party several years ago, he visited Houston to participate in the ground breaking ceremony of the BAPS Temple in Stafford. A very large contingent of Modi supporters live in the Houston area and hundreds of volunteers have been helping in his election campaign in India from overseas. After Modi’s visit to New York in 2014 and Silicon Valley in 2016, the Indian American community in Houston has been clamoring for Modi’s visit. And that desire will now be fulfilled.

COMMUNITY Indo-American Oral History Project features Lalita and Surinder Trehan Although their immigrant journey didn’t quite start in Houston, Texas, the Trehans are long time Houstonians. They made their mark through innumerable contributions to society with the establishment of educational institutions both here and in India, as well as their active involvement in various charitable and religious organizations. Surinder Trehan who is from Jalandhar, Punjab in India lost his parents at a very young age, but was blessed with wonderful brothers and sisters who brought him up. Having completed his undergraduate degree in engineering, Surinder joined the family business in India but soon decided to pursue further studies in the US. On completing his Masters in Mechanical Engineering at

the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, he returned to India to attend to the family business. Lalita Trehan grew up in northern India and New Delhi with her brothers and sisters. As her father was a judge, she moved quite a lot with her family during her formative years. She graduated from Lady Irwin College, University of Delhi with an undergraduate degree in Home Science. Later, she completed her B.Ed. program in education. After the Trehans got married in 1966, they settled in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and started a family. After the birth of their two daughters, Surinder was keen to immigrate to the US. They moved to the US in 1974, first to Cleveland, Ohio, and then to Chicago. While Surinder worked as

an engineer, Lalita, always service minded, toyed with the idea of becoming a nurse. However, she soon realized that being around patients in pain unnerved her and she could not be instrumental in serving them. Her training in education and innate passion for children’s development came to her aid in directing her towards Montessori education, and serving children, our future citizens. She attended the Meca Seton Montessori Academy in Chicago for her pre-primary certification and after the birth of their son Dhruv - they made Houston their home in 1982. After completing her elementary level Montessori training, Lalita worked for a few years and honed her skills at different Montessori schools. She found a great

sense of satisfaction in working with young children and became a passionate advocate for the Montessori system of education. Soon, she started her own school, American Montessori School (today she owns and runs the flagship Sugar Creek Montessori School in Stafford). The school blossomed, each year a grade was added and Lalita’s name became synonymous with Montessori education across Houston. More branches were opened to cater to children in different neighborhoods and soon Lalita wanted to carry this wealth of knowledge to her home country, India. In 1995, the Trehans opened American Montessori Public School (AMPS) in Gurgaon, Haryana. The school, with a core foundation in the princi-

ples of Montessori education, earned a coveted place among early childhood educational institutions in the city. Parents clamored for a seat for their child as the waiting lists grew longer. Now, after nearly 25 years, the school has 12 grades (all the way up to high school) and its educational standards have been maintained throughout the years. It’s no small feat to operate a business, particularly in India, which is such a complex society. But the Trehans have mastered the art, both at home and abroad. While Lalita is at the helm of education, planning and architecture, training programs for teachers, setting the syllabus, etc, Surinder, the business manager, navigates various governmental issues, red tape, and the whole management that entails any business. From 2010 to 2017, their eldest daughter Nidhi worked and managed AMPS in Gurgaon, learning the ropes of the educational enterprise in India and simultaneously re-connecting with the land of her birth. The Trehans have passed this passion to their son Dhruv, who, together with his wife Gauri, opened two of their own schools. Parallel to the growth of their business, the Trehans have many philanthropic initiatives. In India they support early education for underprivileged children in mobile schools, homes for the aged etc. The Trehans are blessed with two daughters, Dr. Nidhi Trehan, a political sociologist, based in Austin, Texas, and Stuti Trehan Patel, an associate District Judge in Fort Bend County; their son-in-law, Hiren Patel, a businessman; Dhruv, their son, and Gauri, their daughter-in-law. They are also blessed with four grandchildren, Dhilan, Priya, Ishaan and Amaya. The life of the Trehans indeed tells a model immigrant story of hard work, persistence, success and great contributions to the society they live in. The video interview of the Trehans, along with the transcription will be archived in the Houston Metropolitan Research Center of the Houston Public Library. The Indo-American Oral History project is an undertaking of the Foundation for India Studies Inc., a non-profit 501(c3) organization registered in Texas. Phase-I of the project is aimed at collecting 100 Oral histories of first generation Indian immigrants by the end of 2019. So far sixty interviews have been collected. Hectic activities precede Hindu Heritage Youth Camp Hindu Heritage Youth Camp 2019 takes place over two 5-day sessions, divided by age , at Camp Lantern Creek, 4045 N Farm to Market 1486, Montgomery, TX 77356. Camp directors Abhimanyu Aggarwal and Namita Pallod. Photo VIVEK SHUKLA By BHAVYA KETHIREDIIPALLI Between the laughter that erupts as a response to a game of “Steal the Butter” and the engaging dialogue that takes place regarding the importance of meditation that is revealed in Chapter 6 of the Bhagavad Gita, Sunday afternoons are a delight for counselors of the Hindu Heritage Youth Camp. Preparations for the longawaited “best five days of the year” are in full swing, and the eyes of every incoming counselor are bright with anticipation. As they spend weeks drafting, editing, and practicing education topics, it would be fair to question why a group of more than 60 young adults are inspired to dedicate their summer to igniting the spark of Hinduism in campers. Dhruv Gomber, a first year counselor, explains, “As a camper, I was constantly inspired by the willingness of my peers and the counselors’ will to teach and learn about Hinduism. Camp has allowed me to explore my identity as a Hindu; as I step into my role as a counselor, I can only hope to make that same impact on young Hindus.” Since its founding in 1984, The Hindu Heritage Youth Camp, commonly known as HHYC, has been a source of light in the Hindu-American community, both within the Greater Housto HHYC operates under Hindus of Greater Houston, which is the organization known for its annual Krishna Janmashta-

mi celebration, Hindu Youth Awards, and its aim to unite Hindus in the Houston community. Moreover, HHYC is completely non-profit, relying on only volunteers and donations to help it run efficiently. The camp aims to give young Hindus a deeper understanding of their cultural and religious traditions so that they can realize the applicability of Hindu teachings in their daily lives. Through a seasoned blend of techniques that focus the mind to make it apt for information, such as yoga and discussionbased education, and entertaining activities that allow the youth to exude their energy, HHYC taps into the desire within each camper to learn more about their Hindu roots. Every morning at HHYC, campers wake up at 6:30 AM for Shakha, which is a movement that was originally started during the British colonial rule in India to unite Hindus while building character and discipline. Thus, campers begin their days with the focused energy that arises from practicing yoga proceed to engage in physical exercises and games in order to engage all aspects of the body, mind and intellect and build community. As the day continues, campers head to ‘educations,’ which are hour-long, periods in which counselors explore a topic relating to Hinduism with campers. During educations, campers get to learn about different as-

pects of the Hindu way of life and also engage in thought-provoking dialogue about the subject matter with both their peers and the counselors that lead the discussion. In addition to educations, campers also get to discover Hinduism through arts and crafts, such as building miniature clay temples to understand the complexity of Hindu architecture throughout history or creating colorful images of prominent Hindu figures, thereby providing a creative outlet while maintaining an educational component. Once campers are finished learning explicitly for the day, they get to relax and enjoy a period of free recreation, where they can enjoy the outdoors and play any game that their hearts desire. Following the fun, campers and counselors gather to sing bhajans and perform aarti. In the evening of each night, the entire camp comes together for a special activity, such as HHYC’s famous dodgeball tournament or talent show. These activities are filled with energy, joy, and companionship, and the sweet memories they create build the HHYC community. Finally, the night ends with the classic combination of cookies and milk, and campers head off to bed. To prepare for the actionpacked days at camp, HHYC counselors meet every Sunday throughout the summer in order to plan educations; brainstorm activities; and practice yoga,

exercises, and games that are performed during camp. Through these meetings, counselors build an exceptional community, as they all work together to create the best possible experience for campers. The hard work that goes into preparing for camp is evident, as it always runs in the most organized and efficient of manners. Ranjan Veludandi, a secondyear counselor, says, “Camp would not be as great as it is without the discipline of its counselors. It’s hard for a project as hefty as HHYC to operate well without great diligence, and the counselors here definitely exemplify an amazing amount of commitment to the cause.” The harmonious mix of education and entertainment would not be possible without the dedication and guidance of HHYC’s directors, Namita Pallod and Abhimanyu Aggarwal. Namita is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and is currently working in Houston. After going to camp as a camper for 11 years, she became a counselor throughout her collegiate years. For the last three years, Namita has been leading HHYC as a director, and her valuable wisdom has allowed camp to grow into the structured yet fun-filled experience that it is today. Abhimanyu, a first-year director and recent University of Texas graduate only attended camp for one year, but he was instantly inspired by all that he was taught, and he envisioned

great potential for HHYC to make a greater impact in the Hindu community. As he gears up to step into his new role, he explains, ”Coming to camp every year as a counselor allowed me to make a tangible difference in the lives of young Hindus. I’ve always wanted to play a bigger role in camp because I strongly believes in HHYC’s mission. Camp is a really exciting experience, and I can’t wait to be a part of its growth.” Evidently, HHYC is a funfilled summer camp with a wonderful Hindu twist. Neha Afzalpurkar, a fouryear camper and third-year counselor, puts it best: “Camp has completely changed my life. I met both my best friends and my life-long mentors there. I feel lucky to be constantly surrounded by an amazing group of people with strong values, similar to mine.” Truly, there is no Hindu camp in the country that has integrated the millennia-old Hindu tradition with modern life in such an impactful manner, and Hindu community of Houston is definitely fortunate to have HHYC in its neighborhood. If you would like to make a donation to the Hindu Heritage Youth Camp or sponsor a meal for campers, please email houstonhhyc@gmail.com. For more information regarding HHYC, visit hinducamp.com. SEWA and Arya Samaj conduct workshop on Women’s emotional & mental health wellbeing

By SAKSHEE JAIN In the midst of the scribbling, stretching, and sharing, it was easy to determine that all 60 women present at the “Women’s Emotional and Mental Health Wellbeing” gained valuable insights into what it meant to be a woman and how to better their lives. Organized by SEWA International and Arya Samaj, the forum comprised a plethora of successful psychiatrists and psychologists, who shared heartfelt stories and gave meaningful advice to the women on a range of topics including post-pregnancy, depression and anxiety, and being a positive person. Sushma Mahajan welcomed the attendees and offered an outline about the programs conducted at the Arya Samaj while Nikhil Jain elaborated on the causes that SEWA promotes. He highlighted how this event falls under SEWA’s “Family Services” program. The women’s mental health forum included Dr. Renu Thapar, Dr. Christina Treece, Dr. Seema Thekdi and Bhawna Luthra, all respected medical professionals or therapists. Dr. Treece opened up the discussion by sharing common illnesses she notices in women post-pregnancy, including the ‘baby blues’, postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. Describing the negative effects of depression during and post pregnancy, Treece urged women to seek support and get adequate nutrition and sleep. She explained that anxiety was common in almost 80% of the women, and if one ever felt hopeless or exhausted, they should seek help immediately. Panelist Dr. Thekdi spoke about another common mental illness she observes in women in the ages of 30-55. Not solely applicable to this age group, Dr. Thekdi explained that “midlife crisis” as well as anxiety greatly affects women. Adding on to Dr. Treece, Dr.Thekdi explained what depression is and how it can stem from disappointment with life, an existential crisis, or just being the ‘sandwich generation.’ Following her was Dr. Renu Thapar, who discussed solutions to a majority of mental illnesses and the midlife crisis. Dr. Thapar’s message included the minimal at home activities one could do to be an overall happy person. She told the audience that they should be positive, or find the positive in every situation, eat right, exercise, and most important, be open to talking about yourself. Panelist Bhawna Luthra introduced herself by asking everyone to stretch their bodies and introduce themselves to the people around them. She then described a case study in which she explained the importance of a strong support system and family. Mrs. Luthra also emphasized the importance of loving people around you, but more importantly, loving yourself. She clarified that the point of her ‘getting to know the people around you’ exercise was to show the audience that you are not alone; there are women exactly like you and know what you are feeling. A Q&A session allowed the audience to clarify or add something to the discussion. It ranged from their personal experiences and difficulties to just clarifying places they could look for if they needed help. This is where it felt that the group became more intimate, that these women didn’t feel like individuals but truly became a family. At this time it wasn’t hearing about a case study, but empathizing with real people. Meera Kapur concluded the program with the vote of thanks to the attendees and presenters. This was followed by refreshments which permitted the gathering to interact with one another and share their stories in a homely setting. This was the 2nd workshop in this series and provided women a platform of understanding their role in this extremely fast-paced society as well as how to maintain their societal expectations. It taught them that feeling low is normal, but scouting for guidance, when needed, is even more important. For more information or to volunteer with Sewa, please email ws-houston@sewausa.org or contact All discourses will be in English. Indian American women involved in smuggling aliens into the US lands in federal prison

By SESHADRI KUMAR Indian American women involved in smuggling aliens into the US lands in federal prison A Texas border town bail bonds company operator and motel owner who ran a scheme to help immigrants from India enter U.S. illegally has been sentenced to 3 years in federal prison. Hema Patel, 51, who was convicted for her role in smuggling hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States, was also ordered to forfeit her Texas residence, two hotels, $7.2 million in bail bonds, $400,000 in cash and 11 gold bars, among other assets, according to a news release from the the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) , which investigated the case. On June 7, 2018, Patel pleaded guilty to alien smuggling for financial gain by fraudulently bonding illegal aliens from immigration custody and causing their release into the United States. U.S. District Judge Denis Hurley in Central Islip, sentenced Hema Patel on July 17. “For her personal financial gain, defendant Hema Patel arranged to have hundreds of aliens smuggled into the United

States, completely by-passing the visa application and eligibility requirements,” Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York said. Patel’s company, Hema Immigration Bonding Services, was located in Raymondville, Texas. She operated the scheme from April 2015 to October 2016, officials said. Patel and her co-conspirators paid middlemen, or “coyotes,” to arrange the logistics of the aliens’ travel, either a northern route through Canada, or a southern route through Mexico. When the aliens were stopped and taken into custody by law enforcement officers at the U.S. border, they called Patel. Patel then prepared fraudulent bond documents on their behalf, including documents listing fictitious names and addresses indicating where and with whom the aliens would reside while their cases were pending. These documents and the bail bonds were then filed in United States Immigration Courts, and the aliens were released into the community. Patel used two of her hotels in Texas to temporarily harbor some of the aliens.

On Nov. 17, 2016, law enforcement agents executed a search warrant at Patel’s Texas residence, seizing thousands of fraudulent alien bonding records. On Nov. 30, 2017, Patel’s co-defendant Chandresh Kumar Patel (not related to Hema Patel) pleaded guilty to smuggling aliens for financial gain for his role in the scheme as an alien trafficker and financial broker. At the time of his arrest, law enforcement agents recovered $80,000 from his Queens residence. On October 5, 2018, Chandresh Kumar Patel was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. The prosecutor said people whose bond was provided by similar bonding companies to Patel’s did not appear for further hearings. “In a classic example of how criminal networks exploit loopholes in our nation’s immigration system to make a profit while threatening the national security of the United States, Hema Patel and her human smuggling co-conspirators manufactured fraudulent bond documents to secure the release of undocumented aliens that were smuggled through the southwest border by an interna-

tional criminal network,” ICE Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Angel M. Melendez said. In the scheme, Patel arranged to smuggle people over either the Mexican or Canadian border for a fee of between $28,000 and $60,000. Of the amount provided by each person smuggled in, $4,000 to $6,000 was Patel’s cut for operating the scheme. As part of the scheme, those

smuggled were also provided with false identification documents, including fictitious name and addresses of people they would supposedly be living with, according to officials. In addition, Patel’s fee was greater for using a Canadian smuggling route because it was considered less dangerous and easier to gain entry to the United States than going through Central America and Mexico.

Chandrayaan-2 goes up successfully, satellite placed in orbit The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) got more than what it bargained for on Monday, after the Chandrayaan-2 mission lifted off successfully at 2.43 p.m. from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, on its second attempt to place the satellite at an orbit 6,000 km more than what was intended. It seemed as if one was watching a nail-biting sports match as the cheers grew louder every time each of the launch objectives was achieved. The GSLV-MkIII-M1 rose into the cloudy skies with bright orange plumes and its engines let out the traditional roar associated with the vehicle, before vanishing behind the clouds, the scene playing out almost to a T like the Chandrayaan-1 launch in 2008. Roughly 16 minutes and 33 seconds after the lift-off from the second launch pad, Chandrayaan-2 was separated into its orbit with a ‘bonus altitude’ of 6,000 km; 18 minutes and 30 seconds later, Mission Control received the first signal from the satellite in orbit, sending everyone into raptures. Throughout the period, everyone at the Mission Control kept a close watch on the proceedings and every successful performance stage of the rocket was given a thunderous applause. “The GSLV-Mark III vehicle has successfully injected Chandrayaan-2 in the defined orbit. In fact, the orbit is 6,000 km more than what was intended. The satellite will have more life, more fuel and more time to play with manoeuvres. It is the beginning of a historical journey of India towards the Moon and to land at a place near South Pole to carry out scientific experiments to explore unexplored [areas],” ISRO Chairman K. Sivan said from the Mission Control after the launch. In fact, the GSLV performed 15% better than the previous launch, he pointed out. “Having injected the satellite in the intended orbit, whatever the satellite team wanted to do tomorrow, the launch vehicle has done it today,” Mr. Sivan said. Over the course of the next one-and-half months, the satellite team will undertake 15 ‘very crucial manoeuvres’. Lauding everyone associated with the project, he said ISRO had fixed the ‘serious technical snag’ that led to the abortion of the launch last week and “now ISRO bounced back with flying colours”. The snag was observed in an intelligent way and the work done in the following 24 hours was “mind boggling”, and the vehicle was brought back to normal quickly. Mr. Sivan said a series of required tests were conducted in the the next one-and-half days and the vehicle was handed over to the team for the launch. He also complimented the satellite team for literally burning the midnight oil to get the satellite ready for launch. The successful placing of the satellite in the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) is only the first step in a very complex operation. With ISRO tweaking the duration of the Earth-bound Phase and the Lunar-bound phase, it aims to soft-land the Lander and the Rover on the Moon’s surface on September 7, a day later than what was initially planned. On the day of landing, ISRO would experience ’15 minutes of terror’ as a powered descent of the Lander-Rover duo would be executed. “On the landing day, we are going to experience 15 minutes of terror to ensure landing is safely near South Pole,” Mr. Sivan said. The duo was expected to be soft-landed at the high plain between craters Manzinus C and Simpelius N that would be at a point facing the Earth and would have started receiving sunlight by the September 6-7 window, enabling the solar powered rover and lander to work for a period of 14 Earth days.

NEWS Pakistan espoused Khalistani agenda: India In a dossier, India mentioned 30 instances of Sikh pilgrims being subjected to anti-India propaganda. In a dossier to Pakistan, India has mentioned nearly 30 instances in the past four years when Sikh pilgrims visiting the neighbouring country were subjected to “anti-India propaganda” such as espousing the Khalistani cause. The 23-page dossier was handed over to the Pakistani delegation during the Kartarpur corridor talks held at Wagah last week. Gopal Singh Chawla, a key “Khalistani element”, instigated the Sikh community to support Kashmiris for the formation of “Azad Kashmir”, says the dossier accessed by The Hindu. In April, Chawla, president of the Punjabi Sikh Sangat (PSS), “raised the demand of liberation of Punjab and Kashmir from India” during a function at Panja Sahib in Pakistan’s Attock where Indian pilgrims were present, the dossier says. Under a 1974 bilateral protocol, four Sikh jathas visit important gurdwaras in Pakistan every year. The Kartarpur corridor will link two revered Sikh shrines in India and Pakistan and is expected to be operational before the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in November. India said that Chawla was a well-known “Khalistani element who often spews venom against India in his speeches and supports militancy in Punjab”. The paper also contained a “pictorial catalogue of his anti-India activities on social media”. Eleven photographs culled out from Mr. Chawla’s Facebook account include posters of J.S. Bhindranwale, a Sikh separatist killed in 1984 during the anti-Sikh militancy raids in Amritsar, and “Referendum 2020”. Jagroop Singh Rupa, who went with a jatha to Pakistan in 2016, was imparted arms training by two fugitive Sikh militants Lakhbir Singh Rode and Harmeet Singh, alias PhD, to “carry out terror attacks in India.” India said the recently banned Sikhs for Justice was given a free hand to promote secessionism during visits of pilgrims. In 2016, Sardar Mohammad Yousuf, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Harmony, while addressing a function at Gurdwara Nankana Sahib, “eulogised Burhan Wani a Kashmiri militant and alleged that the Sikhs and Kashmiris are treated like ‘slaves’ by the Indian government,” India said. In 2016, “attempts were made to instigate the Sikh pilgrims against the Indian Government over the issues like demonetisation of Indian currency.” It also mentioned names of others like Tara Singh, Bishan Singh and Maninder Singh were named in the dossier for displaying Khalistani propaganda and leading a protest against India at Wagah border in July 2017. In 2018, U.K and U.S based pro-Khalistani elements Avtar Singh Sanghera and Pritpal Singh were allowed to campaign openly for Khalistan at Panja Sahi Gurudwara in Attock.

Kashmir a bilateral issue, says U.S. State Dept.

The Trump administration has launched a damage control exercise after the President’s remarks about mediation on Kashmir, with the State Department on Tuesday saying it was a “bilateral” issue between India and Pakistan, and the U.S. “welcomes” the two countries “sitting down” for talks. It also said Pakistan taking “sustained and irreversible” steps against terrorism is key to a successful dialogue with India. “While Kashmir is a bilateral issue for both parties to discuss, the Trump administration welcomes Pakistan and India sitting down and the United States stands ready to assist,” a State Department spokesperson told PTI in response to a question if Trump’s remarks reflect a change in the country’s policy on Kashmir. India has already rejected Mr. Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought his mediation on the Kashmir issue. For more than a decade, the U.S. has consistently insisted that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan and it is for the two countries to decide on the nature and scope of the dialogue. “We believe the foundation for any successful dialogue between India and Pakistan is based on Pakistan taking sustained and irreversible steps against militants and terrorists on its territory. These actions are in line with Prime Minister (Imran) Khan’s stated commitments, and Pakistan’s international obligations,” the State Department

spokesperson said. “We will continue to support efforts that reduce tensions and create an environment conducive for dialogue. This first and foremost means tackling the menace of terrorism. As the President indicated, we stand ready to assist,” the spokesperson said in response to a question. On Monday, Mr. Trump stunned India by saying that Prime Minister Modi, during the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, sought his help in resolving the Kashmir issue. “I was with Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago and we talked about this subject (Kashmir). And he actually said, ‘would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator?’ I said, ‘where?’ (Modi said) ‘Kashmir’,” Mr. Trump said during his talks with Mr. Khan, their first since the latter came to power in August, 2018. “Because this has been going on for many, many years. I am surprised that how long. It has been going on (for long),” he said. “I think they (Indians) would like to see it resolved. I think you would like to see it resolved. And if I can help, I would love to be a mediator. It should be....we have two incredible countries that are very, very smart with very smart leadership, (and they) can’t solve a problem like that. But if you would want me to mediate or arbitrate, I would be willing to do that. So all those issues should be resolved. So, he (Mr. Modi) has to ask me the same thing. So maybe we’ll speak to him. Or I’ll speak to him and we’ll see if we can do something,” Mr. Trump said. Mr. Khan welcomed these remarks. “President, I can tell

you that, right now, you would have the prayers of over a billion people if you can mediate and resolve this issue,” he said. In New Delhi, The Ministry of External Affairs was quick to deny that Mr. Modi ever asked for a mediation on Kashmir. “We have seen [Mr. Trump’s] remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate, if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by PM Narendra Modi to US President,” said MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar. Asserting India’s traditional stand rejecting any third party mediation on the Kashmir issue, Mr. Kumar said that “it has been India’s consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally. Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross border terrorism,” referring to the agreements between India and Pakistan to resolve issues between them, as they did in the Shimla agreement of 1972 and the Lahore declaration of 1999. In the past two and half years, the Trump Administration has gone a step ahead, as compared to his predecessors’, in supporting India’s fight against terrorism. In the immediate aftermath of the Pulwama terrorist attack, the White House supported India’s right to self defense. And in the middle of the election season in India in May, the Trump Administration ensured that 26/11 mastermind Masood Azhar is designated by the United Nations Security Council. The U.S. exerted pressure on China which for about a decade vetoed against any such move.

NEWS India negotiates release of 30 Indians from two ships in Iranian custody

India is in discussion with Iran to free at least 30 of its nationals who were on board two foreign-flagged ships detained by Iranian authorities. Indian embassy in Tehran on Sunday sent an official note urging Iran to release the nationals who were seized from a British-owned oil tanker on Saturday. Diplomats also confirmed that Iran held several Indians from a ship captured previously. “We are currently expecting response to our note verbale that we sent on Sunday. They have our citizens from both Stena Impero which was detained on Saturday and also MT Riah which was detained last week,” said a source familiar with the negotiations. The Stena Impero was detained by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard over the weekend in a tit-for-tat after British authorities detained an Iranian vessel Grace 1 near Gibraltar earlier. Initially, the whereabouts of MT Riah were not known but Indian diplomats were informed about the presence of at least 12 citizens on board the vessel. It was learned that Iran had hinted that it was considering release of nine of the Indian crew members of MT Riah. India on Saturday said it was ascertaining details of the arrests on board the Stena Impero. “Our embassy is in touch

with the Government of Iran to secure the early release and repatriation of Indian nationals,” said Raveesh Kumar, official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs. The Hindu reported earlier that the Iranian authorities had assured that the Indian nationals in custody would be treated well. “Based on the goodwill which exists between Iran and India, the two countries protect the nationals of the other side, and this is not a matter of concern,” an Iranian official based here had said. The tension in the Gulf region has been a security factor that Indian authorities have been watching carefully. On June 13-14, the Director General of Shipping urged Indian-flagged vessels to take appropriate precautions while transiting through the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman. However, Indian nationals constitute a bulk of the manpower in the international merchant shipping who are expected to face the brunt of the U.S.-Iran tension at the high seas. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday urged the Centre to take all possible efforts to secure the release of the Indian nationals including four Keralites on board the British-flagged oil tanker. In a letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, he asked the Ministry to share the

PM didn’t make any request on Kashmir mediation to Trump: Jaishankar The External Affairs Minister reiterated that all issues with Pakistan will be resolved only through bilateral means and engagement with the neighbouring nation will be considered only if it stops cross-border terrorism. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday categorically denied U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought his help in resolving the Kashmir dispute with Pakistan. “No such request was made by the Prime Minister to the U.S. President,” Mr. Jaishankar told the Rajya Sabha. The issue was raised by Congress member Anand Sharma and CPI’s D. Raja. While Mr. Raja sought to know if the government had changed its position on Kashmir, Mr. Sharma insisted the Prime Minister should inform the House what he told Mr. Trump. “I would like to reiterate that India’s position is that all issues with Pakistan will be

discussed only bilaterally and no third party will be involved in mediation. Any engagement with Pakistan would require an end to cross-border terrorism,” the Minister said, adding that the Shimla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration would continue to be the only basis to resolve all issues between both the nations. However, the Opposition was not satisfied with his reply. With the Opposition members insisting on a reply from the Prime Minister himself, the was adjourned till 12 noon. Issue echoes in Lok Sabha The issue was raised in the Lok Sabha as well, with Congress member Kodikunnil Suresh giving notice seeking an adjournment motion. Congress members raised slogans as soon as the House assembled. CLP leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed, “India has bowed before the U.S.” Strongly objecting to his remarks, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said Mr.

Jaishankar would make a statement. Mr. Trump on Monday said he had offered to mediate the decades-long Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, as Mr. Modi had asked him to do so. “I was with Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago and we talked about this subject and he actually said ‘Would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator’, I said ‘Where’, He said ‘Kashmir’. Because this has been going on for many, many years,” Mr. Trump had said at the White House, where he was hosting Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan. The External Affairs Minister quickly refuted Mr. Trump’s claim. “We have seen [Mr. Trump’s] remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate, if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by PM Narendra Modi to US President,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said on Monday.

details of the persons aboard the ship so that their families could be helped. “I request that all possible efforts to ensure the safety of the crew be made and the relevant details of persons may be shared with the State government so that their family members can be contacted and we can be of help in their hour of

crisis,” Mr. Vijayan said in the letter, the copy of which was released to the media. Congress MP Hibi Eden, representing the Ernakulam constituency, also sought urgent intervention of the Central government. Mr. Eden visited the family of Dijo Pappachan, a crew member on board the seized

tanker. The family of Mr. Pappachan hailing from Kochi said the tanker owners had informed them that he was onboard. Asked about the reports that two more people from Ernakulam district were among the crew, the MP said there was no official information so far.

Trump has accepted Imran Khan’s invitation to visit Pakistan: Qureshi

Pakistan on Tuesday said the U.S. President Donald Trump has accepted Prime Minister Imran Khan’s invitation to visit the country. The visit, if made, will make Mr. Trump the sixth U.S. President after George W. Bush to visit the South Asian nation after a gap of over a decade. George Bush visited Islamabad in March 2006 when Pakistan was under the military rule of the then President Pervez Musharraf. Addressing a press conference in Washington, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister F.M. Qureshi said the matters pertaining to the Trump’s visit will be agreed upon soon, Pakistani news channel Geo News reported. The U.S. President has accepted the offer to visit Pakistan upon the invitation extended by Prime Minister Khan, the report said. Earlier on Monday, the U.S. President, while responding to a question posed by a journalist on

whether he would like to visit Pakistan, responded that Mr. Khan had not extended him any invitation but, if given, he would definitely accept it. “Well, I can’t say that yet because, so far, he has not extended me an invitation,” Mr. Trump said amid laughter. “And after today’s meeting, maybe he won’t. But I have a feeling he might. Yes, I’d love to go Pakistan at the right time,” he said. Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower was the first of the five American Presidents to visit Pakistan in 1959, followed by Lyndon Johnson in 1967, Richard Nixon in 1969, Bill Clinton in 2000 and Bush in 2006. The Pakistani premier is currently on a three-day visit to Washington. He met Mr. Trump at the White House on Monday, a meeting which Islamabad hopes would reset the strained bilateral ties between the two nations.

Moon plot owner sees his dream coming true An Indian, who bought a five-acre plot on the moon 16 years

back, feels that India successfully launching its lunar mission Chandrayaan-2 on Monday has given him hope of landing on the moon in his life time. Rajeev V Bagdi, who purchased the plot of land on moon for $140 from New York-based Lunar Society International in 2003, said that India’s second lunar mission in 11 years was for the goodness of the entire mankind. “As an Indian I feel proud over the successful launch of Chandrayaan-2. It will bring lot of goodness to the mankind,” Rajeev said. India’s second lunar mission was on track as its ‘Bahubali’ GSLV rocket successfully put the moon spacecraft — Chandrayaan-2 — into the orbit in a copy book style on Monday afternoon. Bagdi is hopeful that moon tourism will start by 2030. “When I purchased the plot, I thought at least my coming generation will benefit from it, but now I am hopeful that I will be able to go to the moon with my family,” said Bagdi, who owns an ayurveda store. Like many others, Bagdi was fascinated by the moon since his childhood. “I don’t know why I was so inquisitive about the moon. While surfing the internet, I came across an article on moon land selling. I studied it, did my research and took a decision to buy the plot,” he said. He has official documents issued by the Lunar Republic, including registered claim and deed for lunar property, declaration of citizenship and map. “Rajeev Bagdi is the true and legal owner of the property located at Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains) 32.8 degree north latitude, 15.6 degree west longitude track-30,” reads the deed registered by the Lunar Registry in New York on July 27, 2003. “I have claim on moon from that society. If their exploration becomes successful, if they succeed in making human tourism on moon a reality and take control of this land parcel, they will honour the deed as per the map given,” explained Bagdi. Bagdi, who’s also a stock market analyst, believes that he had invested in something good and had taken a calculated risk. He said he trusted Lunar Republic because under international treaty about extraterrestrial property, only such an organisation can claim ownership. “There is nothing illegal. It is a privately funded exploration. It may kick-in or it may fail. I had invested in a project which can help the mankind over a time. At least the coming generations should feel that our forefathers acted with foresightedness,” he said. Bagdi also said that lakhs of people from around the world purchased the plots on moon. Rajeev’s cousin Lalit Mohata also followed his footstep. “When I bought the plot, people laughed at me. They called me a fool and lunatic. I felt happy for giving them a break,” he said. Bagdi pointed out that going to the US was a big thing a couple of decades ago. “Today, a member of almost every Indian family is in the US. The same thing may also happen with moon 20 years down the line,” he added.

Ties between the U.S. and Pakistan strained after Mr. Trump, while announcing his Afghanistan and South Asia policy in August 2017, hit out at Pakistan for providing safe havens to “agents of chaos” that kill Americans in Afghanistan and warned Islamabad that it has “much to lose” by harbouring terrorists.

MUSINGS by Gadfly

Jai Shri Ram? Really? ‘Nationalism won’ screamed a big headline in an Indian newspaper after NaMo’s victory this year. Weeks before the election results, the headline of an opinion piece said ‘Rahul Gandhi comes into his own as India polls near finish.’ Rahul proved it when he declared Chowkidar Chor hai’. In an Indian-American weekly, there was a front-page interview of the media darling, Kerala Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor declaring ‘Congress will win battle for the soul of India’. There are just too many of anti-BJP journos & analysts. It’s a wonder BJP won big in 2014. It’s a miracle that it won bigger in 2019. Indian voters proved it again. Nobody can fool them. Not charisma, not Indira Gandhi and not Priyanka Gandhi. And Shashi Tharoor is no threat to Indian voters’ smarts. Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid said in April 2018 that unravelling of the ruling BJP has begun and its popularity wave is waning. Reminded us of American humorist Mark Twain’s oft-misquoted words: “The report of my death was an exaggeration.” Salman Khurshid lost huge in 2019. Wonders never cease. Indira Gandhi reportedly went to temples around midnight, so that no one doubts her secularism. In 2019, Congress bigwig, Digvijay Singh was seen going to a Hindu temple & even feeding a cow, both in broad daylight. He lost too. Narendra Modi’s 2014 surprise victory brought the Hindu red dot (tilak) on Rahul & Sonia Gandhi’s forehead. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s late entry into the 2019 electoral politics to help her brother proved that charisma without the gift of the gab is hot air. Personally, in the 2019 election, there was a sour note & an icing on the cake. The sour note was BJP’s Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thaukur defeating Digvijay Singh. As much as Digvijay deserved the defeat, BJP shouldn’t have given Sadhvi a ticket. The main accused in 2008 Malegaon Bombings trial, terrorism charges were later dropped & she was released on bail on other charges. Her utterances have been divisive and arrogant. She boasted that she participated in the demolition of Babri Masjid (mosque) in Ayodhya in 1992. She bragged that Mumbai’s former ATS chief Hemant Karkare died in 2008 Mumbai attacks because she cursed him for giving her bad treatment while she was in jail. After Tamil actor Kamal Hassan (campaigning in a Muslim dominated area) called Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin,

Nathuram Godse, Independent India’s first Hindu terrorist, many pointed out that Godse’s act was an assassination, not of terrorism but not Sadhvi. She (proudly?) declared Godse a patriot & always a patriot. Rightly, Prime Minister Modi said he’ll never forgive her for that. Sadhvi seems to think that India is already a Hindu Rashtra. The icing on the cake was the trouncing of Kanhaiya Kumar, the young communist who allegedly attended an event organized by some students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. He had also claimed that Kashmiri women were being raped by India’s security personnel. His trouncing was heartwarming. The Modi wave is supposed to have died many times since the 2014 general elections. When you forget you’re a reporter & report with extreme prejudice, biting dust is a matter of time. In case of liberals in India & America, it has taken a long time – the advent of Donald Trump who has a bigger ego than Sadhvi Pragya – for voters to recognize fake news. Don’t hold your breath for the partisan journalists & columnists – the Amulyas & the Amartyas, oxymoronic names – to change. After BJP’s 2019 victory, Amartya Sen pontificates in Indian Express. “BJP leader Narendra Modi has reasons to be disappointed by global reaction to BJP victory” & cites ‘widespread criticism’ in the world media like from New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, the Observer, Le Monde, Die Zeit and Haaretz to BBC & CNN. “Winning cannot be the only concern in an election. Indian voters should stop to think how you’re viewed across the world media.” A stinging response – Don’t Blame The Mandate - from Swati Parashar (Associate Professor in Peace & Development Research at Gothenburg University, Sweden) to Mr. Sen’s ‘political calumny’ was published by Indian Express. She wrote, “People like Mr. Sen expect that foreign media perceptions should determine how people should think and vote in India. It is not right to dismiss Modi voters as uncouth, intolerant and communal, just because we disagree with their views.” Amartya Sen, Amulya Ganguli, Saeed Naqvi & their ilk might as well be card-carrying members of the Congress Party. George Abraham, vice chairman of Indian Overseas Congress, USA interprets majoritarianism for us. “It is when the elected party acts as if it

has the moral & legal right to do what it pleases.” He should know about majoritarianism and moral & legal rights. His party had those for decades. Rajiv Gandhi had a bigger majority than Narendra Modi. The clock may be ticking for major Indian & American newspapers, mutual echo chambers. That’s Father Time beginning with Time magazine. According to writer Manoj Ladwa, the founder and CEO of Britain-based media company India Inc., which publishes India Global Business, Time is an ailing magazine that has changed hands twice in a year – bought in March last year by Meredith, the publisher of magazines like Better Homes and Gardens, and All Recipes; sold again in September to tech entrepreneur Marc Benioff, the founder of Salesforce, and his wife. Mr. Ladwa credited Modi’s emergence as a unifier to his origins in a backward caste – a factor, he said, missed or deliberately omitted by Western media, obsessed with what they call upper caste domination. The British weekly, The Economist also endorsed the Congress both in 2014 & in 2019. Deafened by all the Western cacophony of bias & interference in India’s elections & politics, India’s well-known journalist, Swapan Dasgupta felt India needs to address hostile Western media (IH-May 22). In a democracy, outside interference is a big no-no, as America found out in 2016. So how does India ‘address’ the problem? More than half of India’s intellectuals are infested with the Western ‘disease’. He suggests focused outreach aimed at sensitizing civil society – beyond the diaspora – to the excitement of crafting a New India. Musings may lack Mr. Dasgupta’s pedigree but here’s the thing. You can’t wake up a person pretending to be asleep. And this is no sleep. It’s blindness caused by blinkers made of 10% democracy and 90% secularism. Only exposing their bias will change things but that’s a long shot. So that the smugness of winning, and the mocking of losers doesn’t turn into dismay, some lessons from last five years may be in order for BJP & India. After BJP’s 2014 victory, Indians in & outside India read about award wapasi amidst talk of intolerance. It was not only hard to believe but sounded like overblown accounts by the liberal media bent on giving BJP & Narendra Modi a bad name so that their 2014 victory is not repeated. What you resist, persists. Barely a year after BJP’s 2014 victory, film star Amir

Khan said his wife was talking about moving out of India. Disbelief & uproar, followed by anger was how most Hindus reacted except Congressmen & women, and communists. The news of cow vigilantes & ‘go-back-to-Pakistan’ shouts kept coming. Too often. The whispers Musings had heard prior to 2014 now became real, frequent & loud. It seemed like RSS & BJP minions were feeling free now to say outrageous things that they may have said privately. All the years of pent-up frustration seemed to be pouring out & the target was the most intransigent & belligerent minority in India. There was that resentment about ‘these people’ partitioned India. Understandable, and temporary. Or so thought many Hindus because in the last year or so, acts of violence seemed to have decreased. The liberal media was known to report the slightest perception of transgressions by vigilantes, ultranationalists & the so-called Hindurashtrawadis. At first, it seemed like Hindus indulging in violence & vigilantism had no experience of power, only perception. Perceived power turned into abuse. They had no idea of what to say & what not to say, nor what to think & what not to think. Now being used to power for five years, the dust should have settled. But that Hindu complacence started to fade when someone of the stature of actor Nasiruddin Shah said his son was afraid to go out. It’s two months now since the election results gave BJP more seats than in 2014. But now as if the violence & words

were not disturbing enough, there are these news bits. A division bench of the Meghalaya High Court (fortunately) set aside a controversial judgment of a single judge which had said that “India should have been declared a Hindu Rashtra (since Pakistan was declared as Muslim State)”, Bar and Bench reported. There was this report in March this year. ‘Go to Pakistan’: 20-25 men barge into Gurgaon home, assault family. From the report it was clear there was no provocation. And forcing people to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’ is not being Bharatiya or Hindu. After five years of increasing boldness of vigilantes & socially illiterate Hindus, BJP leadership shouldn’t be surprised to find blame convincingly at their door, to the delight of Ramachandra Guha. The smugness of NaMo’s supporters may then be jolted by many severe shocks. Mr. Modi in his post-election speech to BJP MPs added Sabka Vishwaas to his 2014 promise of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas. Though his first five years did not bring half the promised vikas, the 2019 voters believed in Modi’s leadership & honesty, overlooked the vikas deficiency as a first offence & gave him even more seats. But a Prime Minister of India should be Bharatiya before being Hindu or Muslim or Sikh. That is his or her Rajadharma. Garv Se Kaho Ki Hum Bharatiya Hain or Bharatmata Ki Jai. Not Jai Shri Ram.

STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI

Gandhi’s first experiment in Satyagraha In December 1902, a cable reached Gandhi from South Africa urging him to return as promised. Joseph Chamberlain, the Colonial Secretary, was arriving from London on a visit to Natal and the Transvaal and the Natal Indian Congress wanted to present their case to him.

money and editorial work! The journal, published every week in Gujarati and English, reflected his ideals and gave the Indian readers a liberal education. With absolute frankness Gandhi pointed out to them their failings and prejudices. Indian Opinion also gave the Europeans a cor-

rect picture of the difficulties faced by the Indians in South Africa. After the rains in 1904 there was a sudden outbreak of plague in one of the gold-mining areas near Johannesburg. It soon spread to the Indian quarters. Gandhi rushed to the spot and organized preventive measures. With the help of friends, he set up improvised hospitals and looked after the sick. Another thing that happened that year was that Gandhi met H. S. L. Polak, then a sub-editor Gandhi with colleagues in his Johannesburg of The Critic. The two law firm soon became fast Gandhi kept his promise. He friends as their outlook on life was reached Natal in time to lead the similar. isted for the welfare of the world. He considered it his duty to help the British. He offered to form an Indian Ambulance Corps. The authorities accepted the offer. The Indian Ambulance Corps was formed. It consisted of a squad of 24 men, and was in active service for six weeks, nursing and looking after the wounded. Gandhi realized that the whites were determined to enforce the tax on the unwilling Zulus. They wanted to put down all resistance and deny the colored people their rights in their own land. The Zulu Rebellion was finally over and Gandhi returned to Johannesburg. His presence was needed there to look after the interests of the Indians, for they were facing all kinds of oppression from the white settlers. In August 1906 an ordinance was issued by the Transvaal Government requiring all Indians — men, women, and children — to register themselves and obtain a personal certificate bearing name and thumb impression. This card was to be carried by all individuals at all times and had to be shown on demand. Anyone failing to produce the certificate was liable to be fined, imprisoned, or deported. The police even had orders to enter private houses and check certificates. “This is too much to bear,” Gandhi told his colleagues. “If we meekly submit, it will spell absolute ruin for us in South Africa. We must take action immediately if we are to live here.” The Indians decided not to submit to this humiliating and insulting measure. They resolved to fight it. But how? Gandhi saw here the need for passive resistance or satyagraha. He explained to the people his concept of satyagraha. First, he said, they must be prepared to observe absolute nonviolence. The authorities would take all measures to put down the agitation. They might use violence, arrest people and send them to jail, but all this must be faced without resistance “Merely disobeying the government’s laws will not be enough,” Gandhi told them. “You must have no hatred in your hearts and you must cast away all fear.” — To be continued

NEWS Venkaiah Naidu inaugurates AAPI’s Global Healthcare Summit

HYDERABAD, JULY 21: Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India, inaugurated the 13th edition of the annual Global Healthcare Summit organized by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), USA, with the lighting of the traditional lamp and delivering the keynote address at the famous Taj Krishna Hotel in Hyderabad on July 21st. “I am glad to learn that AAPI serves as an umbrella organization with a Network of over 160 chapters across USA,” Naidu told AAPI delegates. “We are indeed proud of our doctors and healthcare practitioners who are rendering invaluable healthcare services in countries across the globe.” Naidu devoted a good amount of his speech about the great traditions and the greatness of Indian culture and the civilization of India. Pointing out to India being one of the greatest civilizations, that has given birth to renowned medical practices and higher education before any other nation, Mr. Naidu said, “If you want to go abroad, go learn earn and then return,” he quipped. Calling upon the Physicians of Indian Origin to rededicate their lives for the wellbeing of their motherland, India, serving 130 crore people who need their servicers. Naidu asked of the AAPI delegates not to forget their: Mother, Native Place, Teacher; Mother Tongue and Culture and Traditions of India. In his welcome address, Dr. Suresh Reddy, President of AAPI, said, “This GHS has promised to be one with the greatest impact and significant contributions towards harnessing the power of international Indian diaspora to bring the most innovative, efficient, cost effective healthcare solutions to India.” “Apart from conducting CMEs, seminars and workshops, AAPI must consider collaborating with various governments and other private organizations in establishing a state-of-the-art healthcare facility in each district of the country where affordable treatment is dispensed,” the Vice President of India told the delegates. The Vice President praised AAPI and its noble “mission for India is to play an important role in making quality healthcare accessible and affordable to all people of India. It is indeed a laudable objective as both accessibility and affordability are the need of the hour, especially in a vast developing country like India with a huge population of middle class and lower middle class.” “Only a healthy nation can be a progressive and wealthy nation,” the Vice President of India, said. “India has launched ‘Ayushman Bharat’, touted to be the world’s largest health insurance scheme, under the

aegis of which 10 lakh people have already received free treatment under the scheme,” he added. Describing that India’s healthcare sector as grappling with inadequate public spending, low doctor-patient ratio, high share of out-of-pocket expenditure, inadequate infrastructure in rural areas, lack of penetration of health insurance and inadequate preventive mechanisms, Naidu said, “We face a huge shortage in the number of qualified medical practitioners in India, especially specialist doctors. It is crucial that we address this huge gap in the supply of trained healthcare practitioners by opening more medical colleges and increasing the number of seats at both graduate and Post graduate levels.” The Vice President of India urged all medical practitioners of Indian origin working across globe, to collaborate and work with our government and academic institutions to make Indian medical education world class. Naidu called upon AAPI to “help in promoting the use of telemedicine in remote rural areas which lack access to healthcare facilities. Telemedicine can be used effectively in radiology, cardiology, oncology, dermatology and a few other areas. It will help in reducing unnecessary visits to the hospitals for consultations with specialists and avoiding long distance travel,” Naidu said. Naidu said that India needs an affordable health care revenue model to meet the challenges of modern day lifestyle. The Vice President called on the medical fraternity to put in efforts to bring down the costs of medical devices to make healthcare affordable. He further said that youngsters are increasingly falling prey to ailments due to a variety of factors, including sedentary lifestyle, improper dietary habits and job-related stresses. “We must all focus more on the service. The medical service in India is the need of the hour. India is still lagging behind in spite of a lot of advancement in medication. The Center is encouraging private sector in the medical healthcare sector,” he added. Claiming that India has the potential to become a medical tourist center in the future, the Vice President said accessibility and affordability of healthcare should be ensured as a large section of the country`s population belongs to the middle and lower-middle class. The Vice president said that while India is progressing economically and incomes of people are improving, the common man is unable to meet the medical bill whenever there is a medical emergency in the family. With penetration of health insurance remaining quite low and majority of the
