NOTICE OF TAX RESALE

State of the economy President Obama wisely spent the bulk of his State of the Union speech addressing jobs and the economy, as they remain the forefront issues for most Americans. In fact, “jobs,” “work” and “business” were three of the top 10 words he used throughout the night. In response, Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers used “working” and “job” frequently in her speech. Our goal in the following discussion is to shed light on the realities of this economy. Interest Rates For the first time in what seems like decades, interest rates rose in 2013. The 10-year treasury rate finished at 3.04 percent, up 1.18 percent for the year. Most of this increase occurred in May through July, after the Federal Reserve announced plans to “taper” its $85 billion-per-month bond-buying program. Unemployment The official unemployment rate dropped from 7.9 percent at the beginning of 2013 to 6.7 percent in December. This was the largest annual drop in the rate since the Great Recession of 2008-2009. But this doesn’t tell the whole story. The unemployment rate is calculated by dividing the total number of unemployed workers by the size of the labor force. The number of people in the labor force as a percentage of the overall population has been falling for more than a decade, and is now at its lowest point since 1978. This means that much of the drop in the unemployment rate isn’t because workers are finding jobs, but rather because they are choosing to retire or stop looking for work all together. Inflation The Consumer Price Index, which the government uses to determine inflation, was up 1.5 percent for the year. This is below the Federal Reserve’s targeted inflation rate of 2 to 3

Constable A. J. Dorr Pursuant to a resolution of the Board of Trustees, Fort Bend County, as authorized by Section 34.05(c), Property Tax Code, has requested a public re-sale by my office of certain properties previously foreclosed and bid off to the taxing units in the suits described below. Bill & Jared Jameson percent. Inflation has remained muted as considerable slack exists in the economy. In fact, there is probably more concern about deflation (falling prices) than inflation. Debt The good news is consumers, businesses and financial companies are paying down debt. Unfortunately, public debt continues to grow throughout the world. The US national debt is $17.3 trillion at the time of this writing, or about $55,000 per citizen. Total US debt (the sum of personal, financial, business and public debt) is up to $60.8 trillion, or $192,000 per citizen. GDP Growth Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is a measure of the total value of goods and services produced by a country in a year. In order to give an accurate portrayal of the change in the GDP, the growth rate is adjusted higher or lower for changes

in prices (inflation or deflation). The GDP for the US in 2013 was 1.9 percent, about 0.9 percent less than the average annual gain for the last 44 years. The last seven years have been particularly weak, with an average growth rate of just 1.07 percent. On a positive note, the 3.2 percent annualized growth rate from the fourth quarter of 2013 was the second-highest level seen in the last eight years. As always, there are different interpretations for the same statistics.
