West grad focusing on positives of unique senior year By Kelly Whitmire

In high school, Ryan Newman w a s i nv o l v e d i n w a y s t o increase positivity, an outlook he is keeping as he and other graduating seniors go through an unprecedented situation. Newman, a 2020 graduate of West Forsyth High School, said he isn’t letting the impacts of COVID-19 get in the way of his good memories from high school. “I had a blast my whole high school time. There are ups and downs, but there’s ups and downs in everything,” Newman said. “Corona is a bummer, but if we all come together, we can all grow from it and find times in it where we get some positive experiences and knowledge gained. We’ll be better in the end for it.” Along with being in the school’s marching band, where he served as band captain in his junior and senior years, Newman said he was involved with several clubs at West, including Sources of Strength, which he said was particularly impactful. “On paper, it was a suicide prevention club, but it was mostly just trying to change school culture to be a little bit more positive because, as we all know, it’s kind of negative these days,” he said. “That was really fun. I really enjoyed that, got to meet some really cool people, got to really just interact with some fun teachers and people that I wouldn’t get to interact with.”
This summer, Newman is leaving, just days before his inperson high school graduation, for a three-year mission trip with his church, and once he returns, he’s planning to attend Utah State University to study logistics management. Newman said while he is a little disappointed to have to miss milestones like graduation and misses teachers and classmates but said the reality of the situation hadn’t really set in yet. “I was making some jokes with my friends about it about how I’m kind of in denial right now. So, I’m not too sad about it,” Newman said. “I’m kind of happy, I feel good, but I know I’m probably going to be sad pretty soon. The big thought is just ‘It’ll keep going.’ Life isn’t just stopped. It’s a real bummer that this happened, and I won’t get to walk at my in-person graduation, and that’s a bummer, but that’s OK. Life still goes on.” As Newman is getting ready for the next chapter in his life, he did have some advice for those who will be attending West and other high schools this fall. “Just get involved,” he said. “It’s way more fun when you do something ... Watch out for negative people or you’ll look at the world negatively, and then you’ll have a pretty bad time. Something that a good friend of mine says is, ‘Always be the one who uplifts friends, don’t let friends bring you down.”
