Hustling for the Hustle
BY MICHAEL JOHNSON
According to a new study by LendingClub (www. lendingclub.com), upwards of 58% of Americans are now living paycheck-to-paycheck. That accounts for more than 150 million adults. And this is not limited to low-income individuals, as the study also found that 30% of those earning more than $250,000 or more per year are also living week-to-week.
It can offer a certain sense of solace to hear these statistics for many who wonder if they are alone living from one check to the next. But many also can take comfort in the fact that there is hope for finding just a little more cash each month. There are, in fact, several “side hustles” that can brighten anyone’s financial landscape.
Some of the following “gigs” require minimal investment (some require no money to get started) and yet the return can be very favorable indeed.
UPWORK
Upwork (www.upwork.com) offers an ingenious platform to work and earn in a variety of ways. Users can search for temporary jobs that can be done remotely. People essentially ‘bid’ for jobs that include such skills as IT support, writing, editing, translation, marketing, and even digital design.
Anyone can register their Upwork profile to search for interesting projects where in-demand skills are leveraged. Users can set their rates of pay and even their desired completion rate and bid on jobs that are posted to the Upwork marketplace.
VOICEOVERS
Shameless promotion here from “yours truly.” I have been fortunate to be chosen as a narrator on ACX (www.acx.com) which is Amazon’s audiobook production platform. If you have a voice that would lend gravitas or articulation for everything from novels and self-help books to travelogues and children’s books, you might have what it takes.
In addition, there are a host of platforms where anyone can lend their vocal talent to myriad commercials, audiobooks, e-learning content, or corporate presentations. I have gotten started with a minimal amount of investment and my ‘studio’ is in my closet surrounded by the auditory buffers of my dress shirts and some foam padding purchased online! A decent microphone and audio recording and editing software round out the setup to earn a little more each month with voiceover work.
AIRBNB
There are so many types of accommodations that are available on Airbnb (www.airbnb.com). They range from tiny houses and trailers to widespread mansions. You could rent out your abode at various times during the year, perhaps when you vacate the premises for a much-deserved vacation yourself, or during a well-populated event in your town. There are countless individuals in High Point, for example, who sublet out their homes during the celebrated High Point Furniture Market each season! I personally have a friend who simply rents out a spare room and bathroom in his home and it has a separate entrance, meaning this arrangement becomes even less invasive to his privacy.
UBER, DOORDASH
Both Uber Eats (www.ubereats.com) and Doordash (www.doordash.com) are fabulous services as a side hustle for extra cash. Signing up to drive for either service is relatively straight-forward and offers people the chance to deliver food orders for extra income.
The concept of food delivery has now put convenience front and center. And being a part of this burgeoning market as a driver can yield some nice rewards. Customers can also add tips to their order for extra money going straight into the pockets of delivery drivers.
TEACH ONLINE COOKING COURSES
It is a great time to teach online cooking classes if you have the passion and knowledge to do so. People are now willing more than ever before to learn from online curriculum. Organizing content, picking a culinary niche and marketing yourself well are all key components for teaching online courses. Teaching via the Facebook Live platform is a great way to share your love and passion to teach others how to cook.
If you want to conduct live cooking classes, then you may want to consider a platform such as Skype, Zoom, or Google Hangouts, or another platform with these same capabilities. Then you can charge people for the meeting link, and it can be a good way to interact with your attendees as you can answer their questions.
If you do not have the time to live stream a cooking class every day or week, but you have one day a week where you can pre-record a series of classes, then you can still do this - obviously, this would require more planning and a good budget. Then you can upload your classes to your website or another website like SkillShare (www.skillshare. com) where you can charge for your classes.
ONLINE SURVEYS
Market research is a huge industry. Completing online surveys for marketing organizations can be a great way to earn some extra cash, but one should be cautious about what websites are chosen to fill online surveys. There are legitimate market research companies out there, but also plenty who exist as scammers who do not mind ripping you off. Be sure to do your research before embarking on this pursuit. There are lots of websites who investigate the validity of these market research companies and can help you sort out the legitimate survey sites versus the scammers.

Road Again On the : Mississippi BY AMY HILL

Day Five: Ferry to Ship Island
From Gulfport, visitors are able to take a convenient ferry ride to Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island, built in the 1800s and surrounded by beautiful white sand on the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Pack a lunch and plenty of sunscreen, and don’t forget to check the National Park Service website ahead of your ferry ride for any facility closures or safety notices that could throw a wrench in your plans.
Gators, gambling, and the Gulf Coast are just a few attractions that make Mississippi more than fried food and swamp land. Here’s how to spend seven days in the Magnolia State.
Day One: Fly into Gulfport
Book a roundtrip flight to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) and head north to Jackson, Mississippi, as soon as the plane lands. Jackson is a great base for exploring all that inland Mississippi has to offer. After checking into your accommodations, relax over some southern cooking at Lou’s Full-Serv, where you can order crawfish fondue and bourbon cake to kick-start your week in the deep south.
Day Two: Explore Jackson
Jackson is home to excellent museums such as the Mississippi Natural Science Museum and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. Nearby is LeFleur’s Bluff State Park Mayes Lake along the Pearl River, which is an excellent location for a picnic and a day by the water to beat the summer heat. The park also sports an expansive playground and children’s museum to keep younger travelers occupied. Day Three: Civil War History
Learn more about Mississippi’s role in the Civil War. Less than an hour north of Jackson is Vicksburg National Military Park, where visitors can tour a Civil War battleground, memorials, and exhibits. Approximately 90 minutes west of Jackson, at Windsor Ruins, are picturesque stone columns that have remained standing over 100 years in the aftermath of a large plantation fire in 1890.
Day Four: Biloxi
After spending your first three days in the middle of Mississippi, it’s time to drive south to the Gulf Shore. Biloxi is a hotspot for gambling and even houses a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. There is no shortage of restaurants in Biloxi, especially when it comes to fresh oysters and seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. Across the street from the Hard Rock is the Hurricane Katrina Memorial to honor victims who lost their homes and lives in August 2005. Day Six: Airboat Swamp Tour
On your last full day in Mississippi, spend your day in the swamp by booking an airboat tour through Gulf Coast Gator Ranch. On Gulf Coast Gator Ranch tours, guests are guaranteed gator sightings and even have the opportunity to feed the gators if they dare. After your ride on a highspeed airboat through the swamp, take a walking tour around the ranch. To find out how to book a tour with Mississippi’s only airboat swamp tour operator, visit www. airboatswamptoursofmississippi.com.
Day Seven: Depart Gulfport-Biloxi
After returning your rental car to the notso-crowded Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport, settle in and have a snack at one of the few terminal restaurants available. If you’re looking for a gourmet meal prior to your flight home, be sure to find a breakfast or lunch spot in Biloxi or Gulfport before reaching the airport, where your only choices will be Arby’s, Gulf Coast Grill and Taproom, or a newsstand (although there’s never a bad time for Arby’s curly fries).

How Journaling Can Boost Mental Health BY ELISA COPPEDE
While journaling may sound like an activity only professional writers should take part in, everyone can reap the benefits of this activity. You should not be intimidated by this process, considering that you likely have already had to complete some type of journaling when you were younger. Perhaps it was writing down thoughts in a daily diary entry as a youth or completing a free writing activity while in high school - journaling is a process we often have already taken part in.
What exactly is “journaling?” Is there a specific process to it? How often should you journal to experience the advantages? These are all questions you may have when it comes to beginning this routine. Journaling is the practice of writing within a notebook your thoughts and feelings surrounding your daily life. The entry can be a stream-of-conscious written entry, done right before bed, or it can be more organized, such as an early morning routine where you list concerns and worries to get them out of your mind. Either way, journaling can be extremely beneficial for a person’s mental health. In terms of how often you should journal to experience the gains, it is vital to be consistent. This can be through making it a daily routine, or weekly activity. Only if journaling is happening routinely can you experience how helpful this can be. Finally, how can writing down your feelings and thoughts be helpful to your mental health? Here are five of the top reasons why journaling is extremely valuable, and all should try and complete it!
Journaling Advantage #1: Journaling can help you clear out your mind. By putting down thoughts and worries on paper, you can at least try and let go of those stressors. Rather than letting these circle in your brain, journaling enables you the opportunity to put space between life’s dilemmas and take a clear view of what should be the next step. Journaling Advantage #2: Writing daily can help log specific symptoms. Whether someone is suffering from anxiety, depression or another mental illness, writing can be extremely helpful. Oftentimes in therapy, one of the key exercises that doctors often recommend to patients is to write down their feelings and thoughts once a day. Not only is writing a great tool to help vent feelings you may be struggling with, it can also help by putting down what is happening in your daily life. If you can view your symptoms or triggers to a potential breakdown occurring, you can then use this to seek help—either from their therapist or close confidante.

Journaling Advantage #3: Journaling can also be a creative outlet. Writing things down can be a way to creatively express yourself. It also does not have to only be through words that you can journal. Often drawing pictures or doodles within your journal is an excellent way to let out feelings, worries and fears. Journaling is your own private place to discuss whatever you’re feeling, therefore using art as a method to do so is one way to try.
Journaling Advantage #4: Writing can help you physically heal from trauma as well. According to the article, “Mental Health Benefits of Journaling,” a study on forty-nine adults in New Zealand found that cancer participants who wrote for 20 minutes about their feelings on upsetting events, healed faster after a biopsy than those who did not write. Specifically, women with breast cancer who wrote positively or expressively about their experience with the disease had fewer physical symptoms and fewer cancerrelated medical appointments.
Journaling Advantage #5: Writing can help keep memory sharp. Journaling helps keep your brain in excellent shape. Not only does it boost memory, but it also aids comprehension, and increases your working memory capacity.
CAREER

CONNECTIONS

BY KATIE MARSH

It’s no secret that the job market has changed significantly in recent years. Employers have struggled with a shortage of manpower to meet the demands, but in the middle of this, we’ve seen unprecedented measures to recruit. In an effort to address the employment challenges -- the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Shallow Ford Foundation and Forsyth Technical Community College’s Small Business Center, has created a unique series of events to connect employers with candidates who have a specific interest in specific industries.
Denise Heidel, the Executive Director of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce, shared, “Career Connections is meant to bring a strong educational component to the table. When we began brainstorming this idea, we were adamant that we did not want to create a job fair. Instead, we wanted something more purposeful and strategic because we know that not all industries will attract the same audience.” To that end, Career Connections is divided into five categories: • Trade (September 7) • Education (September 14) • Hospitality / Retail (September 21) • Medical / Health (September 28) • Finance / Insurance (October 5)
“Each program day will feature a variety of panelists who are experts in their industry, but also who represent different facets of the industry,” explained Denise. “For instance – on Trade Day, our panelists represent everyone from commercial and residential construction, HVAC, plumbing, and even property management. Similarly, the other industries have a variety of panelists representing different aspects of their fields. Our panelists are respected industry leaders who can educate job seekers on the opportunities they are interested in.
“Career Connections is for job seekers at any level – whether the soon-to-be or recent high school graduate, the mid-career job seeker looking for new opportunities, or a recent retiree who still wants to work – but wants to try something new! We are excited to welcome job seekers at any stage of their career!”
Denise continued, “We don’t want to waste anyone’s time. We know job seekers are looking for rewarding and purposeful careers. They want to feel valued and that what they are doing matters. These panelists can show them how that happens. And, of course, we have allowed plenty of time for networking so that job seekers can meet with potential employers in a smaller setting.
“Everyone we’ve talked to is super excited about Career Connections. We feel confident that this will provide a great bridge between local employers and serious candidates.”

Career Connections will be hosted at the Historic Broyhill at 3540 Clemmons Road in Clemmons. This is a free community event for job seekers, and the Chamber also has opportunities for Vendors and sponsorships. Please contact Denise Heidel at Denise@LewisvilleClemmons.com for more information.

Durability of Textiles and Fabrics
This is a constant question we receive from our clients. We can’t begin to tell you how many cli-ents have asked us for durable fabrics to hold up to their families. Now we all know there is no such material, but we have something close. Sunbrella and Indoor-Outdoor fabrics have become a staple word in clients’ homes for interior furnishings, suitable for parents and pet lovers. You see many advertisements for these fabrics from retail stores and fabric stores.
Recently, we delivered a sofa to a client who happens to be a veterinarian. One of her many large dogs proceeded to jump on the sofa with muddy paws immediately after we had delivered it to the home. Fortunately, the client had requested one of those fabrics. The red mud came clean with just a damp towel.
Kids eating popsicles, candy, and pizza on sofas is normally a no-no. We still don’t recommend it, but if it does happen, when you have one of these fabrics, you can feel a little bit better that you will be able to clean it.
We encourage clients if they have questions to test the sample fabrics. We took one fabric to sam-ple test with red wine and green juice. The fabric is called Crypton. The test products wiped off and rolled away completely. If it is liquid spilled on Crypton, it beads up and rolls off. Wiping the spills immediately is always a good thing.
We also offer a spray ultra-guard for other fabrics on sofas if a client prefers other fabrics such as velvets or chenilles.
If you want to test one of our Sunbrella fabrics, we can order a sample for you to play with. We will be glad to order or make throws out of washable fabrics. There are endless possibilities. These are commercial grade fabrics often used in doctors’ offices and motels. These fabrics offer cleanability - not quite Superman yet - but we are getting there.
God bless,
June

The Triad’s Green Thumb
for Photography & Videography
BY AMY HILL

In the age of social media, nothing is more important than putting your best foot forward and leaving an impressive digital footprint. With selfies becoming a trend of the past, individuals and small businesses are now leaning into professional photography to tell their story. Spearheaded by Winston-Salem’s own Hannah Morris, Ivy & Dust Photography & Videography is the perfect Jackof-all-trades business to capture all of your important personal and professional moments on camera.
If you already know Hannah, you know she’s always up to something creative. From working on her home remodel with her husband Ryan, creating matching embroidery outfits for her two children Maverick and Stella, or whipping up something unique in Adobe Photoshop for a client, it’s hard to catch her resting on her laurels. Her love for creativity started at a young age and has only strengthened over time. She is forever grateful for her extraordinarily talented builder and engineer husband, who helps bring all of her creative dreams to life in their renovated 1980s brick ranch home.
One of Hannah’s favorite pastimes is creating something beautiful from something that’s on the verge of being given up on. The duo’s most recent project has been designing and building Ivy the Greenhouse, a country-chic she-shed and greenhouse built mostly from old windows. “The windows were too beautiful to throw away,” explains Hannah. “My husband called to ask if I wanted them, and without hesitation, I replied, ‘Absolutely!’”
Hannah and Ryan spent weeks thinking through the foundation, structure, and paint colors of the greenhouse. Her vision has always been to keep it as functional and versatile as possible. She was adamant about wanting her photography clients to be able to stand anywhere in or around the space and it be a beautiful backdrop. She was willing to put in whatever work was necessary to make the space something her clients were sure to find one-of-a-kind. With their own family entertainment in mind throughout the design and building of the greenhouse, Hannah and Ryan knew that the greenhouse also needed to function as a hangout space for them when it wasn’t being used for photography sessions. They started their first garden beside the greenhouse earlier this year, and have found it to be nothing short of an enriching experience. According to Hannah, “It’s been fantastic to watch our kids grow and learn from what we’ve created. We’re really just getting started.”

Ivy the Greenhouse is a studio space for Ivy & Dust Photography & Videography that clients are certain not to find elsewhere. The stunning natural light shines perfectly for all types of family, maternity, newborn, and professional sessions. The space’s versatility has propelled Ivy into becoming the perfect addition to Hannah’s career and family.
Personal branding photoshoots have replaced standard headshots with dynamic photos that allow potential clients to see entrepreneurs in action. A personal branding shoot with Ivy & Dust consists of a preliminary branding strategy meeting to give Hannah a better idea of a brand or entrepreneur’s personal style and mission. Hannah assists with styling and props to take pressure off of her clients, allowing them to focus on showing up rested and relaxed for the photoshoot.
Interested in recruiting Hannah for your next personal or branding photo session? Visit Ivy & Dust Photography & Videography online at www.ivyandduststudio.com to read more about what Hannah has to offer her clients, and to follow along with the journey of Ivy the Greenhouse. Find Ivy & Dust on Facebook and follow @ivyanddust and @ivy_greenhousestudio on Instagram to see more of Hannah’s creativity come to life.

TOP 5 HOME MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR SENIORS TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY FOR LONGER
BY DEBBIE LINVILLE
The showroom is located at 3033 Trenwest Drive in Winston-Salem, and their store hours are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 336-768-5512, or visit them online at ForsythMedicalSupply.com.
The number of American seniors is expected to reach 70 million by the year 2030, according to the U.S. Census. Even with good golden years’ planning, two-thirds of older adults will need some form of assistance to go about their daily lives (American Journal of Public Health). While some elderly individuals choose to downsize by moving into a smaller residence or a quasiindependent assisted living facility, many seniors prefer to remain in their current homes for as long as possible – a burgeoning movement called aging in place. There are some challenges, of course, as the need for assistance varies by person and activity, but with proper medical equipment, supplies, mobility devices, and assistive furniture, this growing segment of the American population is proving it is possible to modify their lifestyles and environments to spend their later years living comfortably and independently.
For more than 50 years, Forsyth Medical Supply has been a trusted source for common and unique medical supplies and equipment of all kinds. They are accredited by the Better Business Bureau and have received the Readers’ Choice Award for 20 years in recognition of their unbeatable customer service. Forsyth Medical Supply is proud to serve clients throughout the Triad and surrounding areas. Whether renting or purchasing, customers receive guidance from a qualified, compassionate professional in the selection and use of highquality medical supplies, equipment, and assistive furniture. When used properly, medical aides can make seniors’ lives healthier, happier, and relatively stress-free.
“Adapting the home for safety and ease of use can help people retain their independence longer.” (Languirand, How to Age in Place) 5 Resources Seniors Can Leverage to Maintain Independence and Well-being:
MOBILITY AIDS
Lift Chair: Getting out of a chair without pain and added strife can be a real struggle. Forsyth Medical Supply believes individuals should not sacrifice comfort and ease of getting in and out of a recliner to enjoy relaxing (or sleeping) in their favorite chair. With knowledgeable associates to help customers decide the size and style that’s right for them (and over 25 lift chairs on site available for immediate rental or purchase), taking home the perfect chair is easy. Forsyth Medical Supply even files the warranty for the life of the chair and can provide delivery!
Power wheelchair and mobility scooter: Wheelchairs and scooters are necessary mobility accessories for millions of older adults. There are many things to consider when selecting a wheelchair or scooter: manual or electric, portability, controls (one or two handed, level of dexterity), size, weight capacity, height, seating, wheel durability, turn radius, etc. The associates at Forsyth Medical Supply can help seniors find the very best wheelchair or mobility scooter to get around comfortably and easily. BATHROOM/BEDROOM SAFETY AIDS
Shower Chair: A loss of mobility in aging can make everyday activities like bathing difficult. The tub/shower is one of the most common places to fall in the home and, for those over 65, such falls have a high likelihood of resulting in injury, and even hospital stays. A shower chair diminishes the dangers of falling by adding much-needed stability, as well as a comfortable resting place while showering. Because seniors have different disabilities and ranges of mobility, no one chair is right for every individual. Forsyth Medical Supply team members are adept at helping seniors select the correct option for them.
Bed Rails: Adding rails to a home bed prevents falling out of bed and can also provide support when getting in and out of bed. Different sizes, styles and heights of bed rails are available. With so many options to choose from, it is important for seniors to determine the rail that provides them the utmost level of comfort and one that is compatible with the bed they have at home. Some bed rails can be adjusted for size, some come equipped with padded handle grips, and others come with an accessory pouch.
HEALTH AIDS
Incontinence Supplies: Seniors frequently suffer from incontinence as part of normal aging. In fact, 1 in 3 older women and 1 in 12 older men experience incontinence problems that are not only inconvenient but can be life-altering, too. Having the right products provides peace of mind without the worry of accidents. Because there are so many choices for washable and disposable bed pads, top of the line absorbent disposable undergarments, adult diapers, disposable washcloths, etc., it can be challenging to know which products to purchase. Thankfully, seniors can rely on the well-trained staff at Forsyth Medical Supply to point them in the right direction to help their specific needs.
