PAPARAZZI HAIR SALON

Getting to the Root of Good Hair!

The average person has 100,000 strands of hairs on their head. While that number fluctuates based on the individual and is obviously impacted by genetics and health—most people share a common concern for maintaining healthy hair, no matter how much or how little hair they may have. It’s why quality hairstylists are in demand—a fact that was made abundantly clear in 2020 during the onset of the pandemic when home haircuts were largely driven by frustration and desperation.

Paparazzi Hair Salon is a trusted resource for many, because they care about much more than a great cut and a great style—they care about healthy hair. Owners Jason and Bobbie Skinner have built a salon rooted (pun intended) in stellar hair care, quality products, and excellent service.

Full-Service

Bobbie shared, “We are a full-service hair salon and offer everything from haircuts to color to balayage to chemical and conditioning treatments, as well as perms, blowouts, styles, and updos. We also offer specialty treatments like Botox for Hair, Olaplex Treatment, Wellaplex Treatment, Nioxin Scalp Renew, and Keratin Treatment. We also offer full makeup options as well as brow, chin, and lip waxing.”

“We specialize in hair services and offer a comprehensive menu that can be tailored to our client’s needs,” Bobbie continued. “Since hair comes in a variety of types and textures, our inhouse expertise gives our clients peace of mind—knowing that we are familiar with all types of hair and can offer services and recommendations accordingly.”

“Our staff works with people of all ages,” said Bobbie. “We can care for everyone in the family—from baby to grandparents, as well as teens, moms, and dads. We pride ourselves on staying up-to-date on hair trends—both in care and style. Our clients appreciate that we can keep up with the looks they want at whatever stage of life they are in.”

“I’m particularly proud of our team’s ability to make people of all ages feel welcome, cared for, and heard. That’s important—especially since our hair is so important to how we feel about ourselves.”

“We have helped teach teenage girls how to care for unruly curls, so they can feel good about their looks…. We’ve helped style teenage boys’ hair to ensure that a cowlick works with their style, rather than against it. We’ve helped cancer patients transition during hair loss or hair regrowth. We’ve helped women navigate the effects of time on their hair color. There is a place for everyone and every age at Paparazzi Hair Salon.”

A Team That Cares

“Collectively, our team has over 145 years of experience in haircare,” explained Bobbie. “We are in this industry because we care. Our skills go well beyond the ability to make someone’s hair look pretty. It’s all about helping people feel good about themselves.”

Bobbie shared, “Someone once said, ‘Invest in your hair. It is the crown you never take off.’ With that in mind, we want our clients to feel cared for and know that we value and appreciate the importance of their hair. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t care about having clean, healthy hair. Some people may appear indifferent, but often—that’s simply a mask for not having the knowhow of haircare. Our team loves to educate our clients on the options they have for beautiful hair.”

“It’s part of that caring attitude that keeps us going back for training, even after years of experience,” Bobbie continued. “The art of hair care is an ongoing, ever-learning, and growing practice. Because of that—we are lifelong students of our craft.” JEJ PHOTOS

Wella Products

“We do not use or sell products unless we can proudly put our name and reputation behind them,” said Bobbie. “As such, we are exclusively a Wella-product salon. We trust Wella and know the results speak for themselves. Wella is the largest color line in the world; we are trained in the products and have access to some of the top haircare educators in the world.”

“Wella,” Bobbie continued, “offers products that will keep hair healthy, and healthy hair is easier to care for. People should not have to sacrifice their hair’s health for the sake of a specific look. Nor should healthy hair be expensive to care for or maintain. We believe Wella offers affordable solutions.”

Special Occasions

“Prom season is around the corner, and right behind that—wedding season,” Bobbie said. “Whatever the occasion or the time of year, though, our team excels in updos and helping style hair for special occasions.”

“We strongly recommend booking updo appointments a minimum of six to eight weeks before the event,” Bobbie explained. “We recommend planning any special chemical or coloring treatments at least two to four weeks before an event. We also ask our updo clients to bring a picture of their dress.”

“Paparazzi Hair Salon is easily accessible from anywhere in the Triad,” said Bobbie. “Our location is in Clemmons, and the salon is minutes away from most parts of WinstonSalem and just off the interstate. We are directly across from Village Inn Event Center, and our new neighbors are TRU Tae Kwon Do. In short, we are easy to find!”

Award-Winning Salon

“We are very proud of—and grateful for—those who have recognized our commitment to our customers. Paparazzi Hair Salon has been previously recognized by Yelp and the Winston-Salem Journal “Readers’ Choice Awards.” Most recently, we were selected as “Best Hair Salon” in the Clemmons Courier “Best of 2021.” We are thankful for our clients who voted and told the community that we are the salon that can be trusted.”

Family-Owned and Community-Minded

“My husband, Jason, and I are the proud owners of Paparazzi Hair Salon,” said Bobbie. “We opened the salon in 2013. Jason handles the behind-the-scenes operations of the business, while I oversee the storefront operations. It’s been a great partnership.”

“Additionally, we have invested tremendously in our community,” Bobbie continued. “We love our Clemmons location and are actively involved in our local Chamber of Commerce, as well as other community programs and events. The ‘shop small’ attitude goes well beyond retail and is inclusive of all industries, including ours. We believe in the local impact a small business like ours can make on a community, because we’ve seen it first-hand. Plus, it’s reciprocal. Our clients show us their support, and we show them support in kind. It’s win-win.”

“When it comes to matters of the hair, it starts with matters of the heart,” said Bobbie. “And we approach everything we do from hearts of gratitude and service— believing that a great head of hair can empower others to be and feel their best. So that’s what we do—one head of hair at a time.”

The YMCA has Everything Your Family Needs

YMCA OF NORTHWEST NORTH CAROLINA

As we welcome the new year, let’s make sure that our resolutions not only focus on doing better for ourselves and our communities, but for our families, as well. There are so many engaging programs and opportunities at the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina for the whole family to take part in at any time of the year!

So, what are some of the great things you can do as a family at the Y in 2022?

1Joining the Y if you have not already should be your first move! There are plenty of programs and events at the Y that you can participate in without a membership, but a membership will give you discounts on sports, swimming, camp and more! Plus, if you join in the month of January, you can sign up with no joining fee!

2Learning how to swim is an essential part of growing up, and it’s an important skill that everyone should have to keep themselves and others safe around water. The Y offers swim lessons for members of all ages throughout the year. And, thanks to donors and grant funding, the Y offers Safety Around Water, which is a free community initiative that teaches kids who may not have access to water or swim lessons the essentials they need to stay safe in and around water.

3Another activity that’s an essential part of growing up is going to summer camp! The Y has several options for campers and their families each summer to help them get the best experience possible. YMCA Camp Hanes in King, NC offers Day Camp and Overnight Camp options, and most YMCA branches offer Summer Exploration Academy at the Y during the summer months.

4Sports at the Y are great for introducing kids to the fundamentals of the game, but also learning that good sportsmanship and respect are just as essential. And, you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy sports leagues at the Y! Adult sports are returning to the Y so that everyone can take part in the sports they love at the Y. 5 Group exercise classes are a great way to focus on your health, meet new friends and find the workout routine that works best for you! Y members have access to all group exercise classes not only at their home Y, but at other nearby Ys, as well. Find your next class at ymcanwnc.org or on our mobile app.

6If you want to take your fitness goals to the next level, the Y has a variety of options for you! Between personal training, boot camps and more, you can explore new workouts with the assistance of our knowledgeable Y staff guiding you along the way.

7While you’re exploring all these new fitness options, you’ll know that your kids are being looked after in a safe environment. Kids Zone is a free childcare service for our members that is available at most of our locations. Kids ages 6 months old through 11 years old are welcome in Kids Zone!

8Now that your family is a part of the Y, be a part of some of our biggest events: races! Our annual races are great ways to not only spend time with family and friends while giving back to the community at the same time. The Annual YMCA Mistletoe Half Marathon, 5K and 1-mile Fun Run is one of the biggest holiday races in WinstonSalem! For nearly 40 years, this event has raised funds for programs at the Y that benefit children in our communities. Join us at the starting line on the first Saturday of December! The Dirty Dozen 5K Obstacle Mud Run in Clemmons adds a twist to your traditional 5K. Proceeds from this race go toward health programs at the Y that benefit cancer survivors, diabetes patients and more. We’ll see you on the course on September 17, 2022.

9The Y is all about giving back to the community. You can, too, by volunteering at some of our amazing events, or by coaching your kid’s youth sports team! Whatever you’re interested in doing to help give back to the community, we can find the right opportunity for you at the Y. 10 As many of you know, the YMCA is a non-profit organization. Donations help drive what we do each and every day for our members and our neighbors. Giving back to the Y means more families can enjoy the programs and services we offer, regardless of their financial situation.

No matter what you and your family like and what new experiences you’re looking for, the Y is here to make your 2022 the best year yet.

Tear Out Here

Celebrating MILESTONE Birthdays

BY GEN CONDON

Birthdays are a must for celebrating. Confetti, balloons, your favorite meal. And not to mention a cake to fulfill that sweet tooth! And let’s not forget—make a wish for the new year to come! And remember, it’s common knowledge that any food or drink consumed on your birthday has no calories, so eat that extra slice!

Milestone birthdays hold a special place in our hearts. Signifying growth, new opportunities, and dreams to be fulfilled. As we reach each milestone, exciting things await us, maybe even sprinkled with some apprehension. There may be some aching backs and gray hairs, but each year is one to celebrate.

1 YEAR OLD Throw confetti! Loads of balloons, matching parent and child outfits—a cake to feed 100 people and goody bags for kids who can’t even speak yet or don’t have teeth to eat the candy! This party is more for the parents and family to celebrate and get together. Just prepare for tears (from the baby, too), because things may not go as planned (cue rain for an outside party) or a skipped nap that makes opening presents and happiness just too much to bear! 13 YEARS OLD Now gears shift and you are no longer invited to the parties. You are totally cramping their style and yanno what? They’re a teenager now, so they should totally and for sure be able to stay up as late as they want, eat way too much pizza, cake and candy, and complain the next morning their belly aches. Cue tears again reminiscing about the first birthday and look through photos of how cute the matching outfits were.

16 YEARS OLD A party fit for a king or queen. This signifies growth and coming of age. Hide the car keys, increase your insurance, and stay off the roads because they can officially drive. And it’s scary. Cue tears when you get the first car insurance bill with the new driver added on.

30 YEARS OLD A surprise party that you don’t want because you’re all of a sudden tired at 5 o’clock instead of wanting to go out and drink, like in your 20s. Don’t forget to hydrate and moisturize, exercise, and eat right. Balance work and your social life. Cue tears, because why does your back hurt? And your neck? Shoulders?

What is happening?

40 YEARS OLD Sports car—enough said. Cue tears for fear that perhaps any choices in your life might not be what you had intended. But deep down, you know that your life is perfect just the way it is.

60 YEARS OLD New beginnings, smiles and laughter. An extravagant birthday— perhaps a trip to your most coveted location. Retirement is near and life, as you know it, will begin to mellow out and make room for things that you enjoy. No tears, just excitement and relaxation.

90 YEARS OLD Imagine what you’ve experienced in 90 years of life? Changes to the world, technology, science. You’ve come full circle and just like at the 1st birthday, family and friends will want to celebrate. Allow those around you to shower you with love.

Each year, no matter how you choose to celebrate, remember the joy and memories that past years have brought and all you have left to experience. So, embrace every moment!

Tears, but not for sadness or regret, aching backs and shoulders; tears for a life that was worth living and experiences and memories that will live on forever.

And always remember…

“Today is the oldest you’ve ever been and the youngest you’ll ever be again.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

So, embrace each moment and live a life a 90-year-old would be proud of.

Kaleideum is an interactive museum of arts, sciences, and exploration formed by the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks in July 2016. The two museums merged into a single organization to reimagine learning and better meet the needs of a diverse community by providing more access to informal science discovery and cultural experiences.

With a Kaleideum membership, families can explore, discover, and make new memories together at two locations currently. Kaleideum North, 400 W Hanes Mill Road, is open Tuesday-Sunday, and Kaleideum Downtown, 390 S Liberty Street, is open on Saturdays and Sundays. This summer, both locations will be open seven days a week, and in late 2023 or early 2024, Kaleideum will move to a brandnew location in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem at 120 W Third Street.

Kaleideum offers a Family Membership for $150, which includes up to four listed adults and all children in the same household, as well as reciprocal benefits with museums affiliated with ASTC (Association of Science Technology Centers) and ACM (Association of Children’s Museums). In addition, the museum offers other levels, including Grandparent memberships. All memberships provide discounts for Camp Kaleideum, birthday parties, special events, and gift shop purchases.

Kaleideum will be offering 10 percent off new memberships and 15 percent off renewals at Forsyth Family’s Kids Morning Out on Wednesday, January 12. For more information, call (336) 767-6730, ext 1000.
