The history of the “chamber of commerce” dates back to 1599 in Marseille, France, when King Henri IV commissioned it. From the beginning, the Chamber (or “Chambre de Commerce” as it was known) was designed to offer businesses a way to integrate and socialize as they worked to build economic strength.
It took 65 years for the idea to catch on, but soon, across Europe, other countries and communities began to implement similar Chambers. The first Chamber arrived in North America in 1750 in Halifax, Canada, and it was soon followed by the New York State Chamber in 1768.
While Chambers of Commerce are not government institutions, Chambers of Commerce have a long-standing history of supporting and encouraging local commerce and economics. Today there are over 13,000 Chambers registered, and approximately 3,000 of those are in the United States.
The Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce is quite young, founded in 2007. But in 14 short years – the Chamber has become a trusted resource for local entrepreneurs and businesses in the community.
