The other president’s tweets

I

t is an enormous joy to pen my first SCRIPT column: “President’s Parliament.” The word “parliament” means a group of owls. This column is not the only medium in which I communicate publicly and widely. I am quite active on Twitter – tweeting an average of four times per day. People are often surprised when I tell them that I was actually a social media novice. I did not have Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter. . . until Foothill. On my first day as president of Foothill, I posted:

Today, there is another president known for his tweets. I cannot quite say I have thought about using Twitter in the same manner. There are many different leadership styles, and how we communicate sheds light on our character. My decision to venture into a new territory (tweeting) is because of you. I want to brag about Foothill, dispel the myth about community colleges, and connect with community leaders to bring resources to the college. Twitter has become one way for me to convey my leadership values and vision. Since that first tweet, I have gained over 2,000 followers, including Congressman Ro Khanna and State Assemblyman Marc Berman. They follow me to learn more about your accomplishments. There’s a sign near the door of Foothill’s Sunnyvale Center, “Your Reputation Starts Here.” Leadership is about how you lead your own life – in your family, in your community, at school, and at work.

As an immigrant and First-Gen, I “The best way to found college chalfind yourself is to lenging and most of the time, I felt lost. lose yourself in the It was through vari- service of others.” ous service projects Mahatma Gandhi that I met friends and honed many of my leadership skills. My wish for each and every student is that you will have a meaningful opportunity to harness your leadership skills and develop your leadership voice through service. After consulting with many faculty and staff, I became even more convinced that Foothill College should be a place known for Service Leadership. The college’s Educational Master Plan, for instance, directs the college to encourage student participation in leadership and activities outside the classroom that engage students with the college and the community. To celebrate our 60th anniversary, we launched the Service Leadership initiative this year and will showcase 60 Service Leadership projects (https://www.foothill. edu/60yearsofservice/). • Join a club that is doing a service project. • Encourage classmates and friends to start a project with you. • Turn your class assignment into a service project. • Present at the Research & Service Leadership Symposium on May 17th (https://foothill.edu/ rsl-symposium/) Maybe your project could be one of the 60 Service Leadership activities selected for our 60th anniversary celebration. This chart shows the branches of Service Leadership and might give you some ideas.

My vision is that when universities and employers see your application, they know that you not only received one of the most stellar education in the country, but also have been prepared to lead and serve wherever you go.

I have met so many extraordinary students at Foothill College. You truly are a group set apart. Your intellect, grit, thoughtfulness toward each other, and poise continue to impress me. I genuinely believe you will be the leaders of tomorrow, if not already today.

Your President
