Foothill Now Offers CEUs to Health Care Professionals
Silicon Valley health care professionals can now head to local classrooms to complete required continuing education units (CEUs) thanks to an innovative partnership between Foothill College and Medics For Life, Inc. The new continuing education courses, which range from basic first aid certification to highly specialized life-support skills and diagnostic training, meet at the Foothill College Middlefield Campus in Palo Alto. Foothill’s continuing education classes are offered weekdays, weeknights and weekends, as well as through blended courses that combine online and in-person instruction. The classes are competitively priced from $5–$125 for basic and re-certification classes to $90–$380 for advanced, multiday certification and skills courses. Organizers of the contract education program are also available to deliver on-site continuing education training at an employer’s facilities. Designed for health care professionals, the program features instruction from Foothill College faculty and Medics For Life trainers in a variety of subjects, including: • Advanced Airway Management • First Aid, CPR & AED for Infants, • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Children & Adults • Basic/12-Lead EKG Interpretation • Pediatric Advanced Life Support • Basic Life Support • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support • EKG Rhythm Recognition • Trauma First Responder • Emergency Cardiac Care • and many other subjects To present these high-demand continuing education courses, Foothill College has contracted with Medics For Life, an authorized provider of American Heart Association training. From Angelou to X
African-American Literature
From slave ships to the Pulitzer Prize, take a fascinating journey through African-American literature by enrolling in the ENGL 12 course this winter. You’ll trace the history of America’s black writers from the height of the U.S. slave trade through the 21st century. In 1773, Phyllis Wheatley became the first African American to publish a book. Her poetry challenged the prejudicial view that blacks lacked the imagination, originality and vision to engage in Maya Angelou creative writing. Of course, her contributions were only the beginning. Many more were to follow; individuals whose work continues to influence a movement and encourage generations, including Angelou, Baldwin, Brooks, Cullen, Danticat, Douglass, Dubois, Giovanni, Hansberry, Hughes, Hurston, King, Lorde, Morrison, Obama, Naylor, Shange, Truth, Walker, Washington, Wright and X—to name a few. You’ll study the significant literary, social, cultural and political issues present in African-American writing through the examination of the narrative, the short story, poetry and drama. Biomedical Device Engineering Series
Foothill’s new biomedical device engineering course series continues this winter with ENGR 83B: Design & Manufacturing in the Biomedical Engineering Field and ENGR 83C: Introduction to Medical Device Regulations. The new series is designed to prepare you for entry-level jobs at Silicon Valley companies. You can complete the five-course series and earn a certificate of proficiency in just three quarters. You’ll study the design and manufacture of pacemakers, artificial limbs, stents and more. The ENGR 83B course introduces material and process selection considerations, aseptic and sterilization processes, clinical testing and an introduction to automation. You’ll study certification standards and regulatory processes that are specific to the medical device industry in the ENGR 83C course. ENGR 83B and 83C are five-unit courses that transfer to CSU. Experiment with Different Materials
New 3-D Printing & Basic Model Making
The growing revolution in three-dimensional printing technology is generating exciting new career opportunities in design and engineering. Applications for 3-D printing, also called additive manufacturing, span an increasing variety of design fields, including aerospace, architecture, entertainment, medicine, packaging, transportation and others. This winter, Foothill continues its rapid prototyping certificate program by offering ENGR 62B: 3-D Printing Basic Model Making, the next course in the program series. “If you want to learn effective techniques, experiment with different materials and see your own creations come to life, this is the course for you,” says Foothill College Physical Sciences, Mathematics & Engineering Division Interim Dean Victor Tam, Ph.D. “You’ll also get hands-on experience using a cool design tool and work with industry technology that’s prevalent throughout Silicon Valley.” Learn the principles of effective three-dimensional design, printing and rapid prototyping. With an emphasis on plastic and metal processes, you’ll create forms and shapes using a variety of materials and model-making techniques. You’ll also develop skills to use quick model-development materials, including foam core, cardboard and clay. The five-unit course transfers to CSU. English 1A & 1B Guarantee
This winter, Foothill offers its ENGL 1A and 1B guarantee, a pledge to get you a seat in these popular composition and reading courses. Here’s how it works: New sections of ENGL 1A and 1B will be opened provided that there are no sections of the courses with available seating. “We understand that you need to complete these courses, especially if you are pursuing the Foothill associate degree, and if you intend to transfer to a four-year university,” says Foothill’s Language Arts Division Dean Paul Starer, M.A. “Foothill College is committed to student success—and access.” Some restrictions apply, and you’ll need to be flexible. Consider taking ENGL 1A and 1B in the afternoon, evening or online. Also, if you must complete a placement test, schedule it online now. There are no fees for these tests. Integrating Study & Hands-On Experience
Archaeology & Anthropology in Ireland This Summer
Explore castles, moated sites and ancient settlements in Ireland this summer as you earn college units and learn about archaeology and applied cultural anthropology. Under the leadership of Foothill Anthropology Instructor Sam Connell, Ph.D., the four-week field study project will focus on native Irish resistance to the English invasion in the 12th and 13th centuries. Set for July 2015, Foothill’s four-week archaeology project is based at Ballintober Castle in County Roscommon. You’ll concentrate on finding new archeological sites and participate in all aspects of the project, including surveying, mapping and artifact recording. In addition to fieldwork, you’ll study Irish culture by visiting major attractions and working with a living history museum to conduct experiments in medieval technology. You’ll also earn 12 units and complete an exciting program that includes cultural excursions, lectures and service learning projects. Throughout the experience, you’ll discover how the application of applied anthropology pertains to the modern world. No prior experience in anthropology is necessary. More than 200 Foothill students and community members of all ages and abilities have participated in Foothill’s field study programs, most recently in Ecuador. Train for a HighWage Career in a Health Care Field
In 2015, humanity will for the first time get up-close views of the two best-known dwarf planets in our solar system—Pluto and Ceres. The Mars Curiosity Rover will begin its exploration of Mt. Sharp, the mountain whose base was submerged in water in the red planet’s distant past. And the Rosetta spacecraft continues its pioneering close-up examination of the surface of a comet. Learn more about exciting planetary exploration discoveries by enrolling in the ASTR 10A course. Nicknamed “planets for poets,” the course is offered days and evenings, and features a nontechnical introduction to the planets, moons and cosmic debris. First Peoples of North America
Leading Bay Area archaeologist Mark Hylkema will introduce you to the first peoples of North America in Foothill’s ANTH 4 course this winter. You’ll meet the Native American peoples who have called North America home for centuries in this hands-on course. In addition to reading assignments and class discussions, you’ll also learn how to make fire, create stone tools and learn other aspects of ancestral Native American traditions while also appreciating contemporary tribal identities You’ll study the social organization, economics, technology and belief systems of several Native American societies. The course also focuses on the historic and current relationship between the federal government and Native Americans, as well as contemporary issues in Native American communities. Jump start your career in STEM by taking the new MATH 1A: Differential Calculus and MATH 1B: Integral Calculus online courses. Calculus is widely used in science, economics, engineering and other professions, and can provide the tools to solving many problems that algebra alone cannot. In the MATH 1A course, you’ll study limits, derivatives and their applications to curve-sketching, families of functions, and optimization. The MATH 1B course introduces definite and indefinite integrals, first and second fundamental theorems and their application to geometry, physics, and the solution to elementary differential equations. Prerequisites apply and an appropriate score on the math placement test is required. Both five-unit courses transfer to CSU and UC.
