HOW FIVE ENGLISH KIDS ROCKED THE WORLD OF FUTSAL. June 27 2010, all eyes were on Lampard when he scored against Germany, all except for the Referee’s. It all fell apart, again. In that one moment, Rodrigo, a Brazilian coach decided that he would not be defeated by England’s loss. He had a much greater plan; Get out of London for a week and go to Spain to the world cup of youth futsal, the Costa Blanca Cup.

5 KIDS CHALLENGE Although Rodrigo teaches at Active Planet Futsal Academy he did not have time to organize a team, so he borrowed a few under 12 players from WLFC (West London Futsal Club). Despite his hard work, Rodrigo could only find five players. Five players is the bare minimum needed to compete in a futsal match, tiredness and injuries were not an option. Most teams had over 10 players, all of which have been training together for years. Rodrigo on the other hand only had a few days to convince a group of parents and their children to take time off to fly to Costa Blanca to face the strongest youth futsal teams in the world. Amazingly enough he and his players made it to Spain just in time. The same evening Rodrigo and the squad arrived in Costa Blanca, Spain won the World Cup. This added an extra element of intimidation. Luckily, the opening ceremonies for the Costa Blanca Cup stole some of La Furia Roja’s thunder. The main roads from the beach to the arena were closed down and patrolled by police to allow a river of five thousand players and supporters from 160 teams from all over the world to flow through the town. After the teams and fans had filled the stadium the ceremony finally began. The stage had it all: gigantic screens, TV coverage and of course, dancing numbers with the unavoidable Waka Waka. The next day the parents and kids promised themselves that they would maintain a low-profile and take pride in even the smallest achievement. The first match was against a Venezuelan team with countless international achievements under their belt. The Venezuelan coach could only watch in frustration when the WLFC had the style and the nerve to win the game 3 to 1. At that point it no longer mattered if they won another game. But you know how it goes, power grows on you. In the following matches the WLFC went undefeated. Then the buzz started. Everybody was talking about these amazing English kids beating squads that had much more experience. Good news, the team was in the semifinals. Bad news, they were up against a Spanish home team. After the four group matches the kids were exhausted. Each one of them had blisters and minor injuries. Luckily, Rodrigo was able to find another player, Campbell to fly over to Spain. WLFC finally had one more player right before the semifinals. Campbell entered to substitute nine years old Alessio, their youngest player and scored the second goal. After the second goal the kids were unstoppable. And with a score of 5 –1, WLFC eliminated the Spanish
team. There was only one match left to play: the final. The Ukraine team had prepared for over a year for the Costa Blanca Cup. They had a team of coaches, more than ten players and just like WLFC they were undefeated. As the national anthems started the pressure mounted. The first half was a game of chess with both teams testing their strength. In the second half it was obvious that WLFC couldn’t cope anymore with injuries and blisters. When the Ukraine team scored a goal, WLFC hit the bar, kept on pressuring the opponents, but it wasn’t meant to be. Rodrigo did a drastic change in the formation; Ukraine saw the gap, punished WLFC with a second goal and won the cup. To everyone’s surprise all the eyes were not on the Ukraine team at the closing ceremony. They were focused on the five English boys that came and rocked the place. 13 If you play football and you know how to get online then you must know football.mitoo. If you don’t then try switching on your computer. Julian Bauer started football.mitoo almost fourteen years ago when nobody, including the FA, saw any reason to publish football results below the big leagues pyramid. It was a difficult time for Julian, he had to put on hold his IT career to look after his mother and sister and he was in desperate need of a project to take his mind off his family’s struggles. Football and Internet were his passion, so he decided to create a website to display his local leagues, tables and results. While everyone else was blinded by Manchester United and QPR, Julian saw that there were hundreds of leagues, thousands of teams and an audience of more than ten million people involved in the beautiful game throughout the UK.
Today football.mitoo provides over thirty thousand teams with a website, so players and fans could finally see their team’s results. In recent years the FA have tried to follow in Julian’s footsteps. But there is something unique, something genuine about football.mitoo that the FA cannot match. football.mitoo is a community that cares about its fans and is aware of their needs. football.mitoo is so engrained in UK youth football that other online ventures trying to reach this audience find it quite difficult to compete with Julian’s creation. ZOVA is the world’s first music and rhythm-based sports training programme. ZOVA is a product of Movement In Time Limited, United Kingdom, a company co-founded by music producer James P. Tonkin and ex-footballer/coach Niall McCarthy. ZOVA provides a new way of thinking about the relationship between music and sports. KAZUKI BEWARE OF THE HUMMINGBIRD
When Kazuki does a step-over, the ball orbits around his ankle as if it was magnetised. At twelve years of age, Kazuki is probably one of the most peculiar players in London. His technique is beyond perfection, almost unearthly. It only takes him few touches for you to realize you are witnessing something extraordinary. When Kazuki does a step-over, the ball orbits around his ankle as if it was magnetized. When closed down by defenders he has the ability to create space that wasn’t originally there, and he does all of this at an unbearable speed. How does he do this you ask? His answer is practice. Thank you very much Kazuki. Of course it is, but his attention to details and execution is uncommon.

He can spend months practicing on each foot to make sure he has perfect control of the ball. It might be a cliché, but let’s face it; his strength of mind and resolution is typically Japanese. It is no surprise that Kazuki’s name has spread as quick as his dribbling. His London football team, Old Actonians, is one of the strongest U13 in Middlesex. Part of their success is definitely due to Kazuki’s ability to get through any defense with his hypnotizing moves. Kazuki is now back to Japan. Watch this space.
