Viva Carnival!! As the slogan flows in the air marking the beginning of the festivities in Goa, the state is proud that it's the only place where Carnival takes place in India. It's not possible for Carnival fans to travel to Rio in Brazil to celebrate the Carnival, hence Goa remains the best option for domestic tourists and they descend to Goa to indulge in the fun!

to be achieved and that will happen only with the proper planning and implementation of certain strategies. Goa's economy is mainly dependent on the tourism sector and casinos play a major role in that, but that becomes only one source of income. What about utilising the available resources that Goa has to boost tourism? When is the tourism department going to make use of it in reality instead of just putting them on paper as plans for the future?

Carnival is not just a festival: it is also an activity to boost tourism in the state and hence the Tourism Department spends a lot of money on promoting this event. Some might say that this has led to the Carnival losing its charm somewhat, due to a high level of commercialisation, but that does not affect business as the money keeps flowing in from advertisers and spectators. Carnival is not the only event that pulls tourists into the state, but it does mark the beginning of other festivals including the Food & Cultural Festival. Usually, the Food & Cultural Festival takes place in the capital city but this year due to various known and unknown reasons it has been shifted to the Morjim and Arambol on the extreme north coastal belt. Basically, Goa needs a master plan to improve the quality of tourism. There is no dearth of inflow into the state: the hotels are doing an average of 70% occupancy regardless of which category it belongs to, but still, the quality of the tourism is yet

Our current tourism minister is young and dynamic with lots of ideas, but he also has a lot on his plate at the moment with the responsibility of startups and tech which is another growing industry in Goa. Speaking on Startups, Incredible Goa has been promoting this sector very aggressively by providing platforms to budding startups in Goa and very soon we will be having a standalone segment for entrepreneurs to showcase their talents.

The success story of our Food & Hospitality magazine has given us enough reasons to explore other verticals and soon you will see the outcome of the same where we will be supporting growing business and startup industries in Goa. Incredible Goa intends to always give a the stage to upcoming talents, entrepreneurs and trend setters and this journey will continue. So, till next time, happy reading…

The launch of Dr Digambar’s Vrindavan Hospitals at our Dempo Healthcare property is just the beginning stage of that healthcare expansion plan on the asset-light business model Vrundavan Hospitals is owned and managed by Dr Digambar Naik and his team of doctors with a tie-up from Dempo Healthcare on an asset-light business model. As far as the

expansion into the hospitality sector, Rajesh said that he has plans of expanding into this sector and taking his brands into the small towns of India. “Areas near Goa are ideal locations for expansions at the moment. I also have a big plan of taking our brand into Portugal but that may take some time. We also have a piece of land in Mopa but I do not want to rush into that as the best policy at the moment is to wait and watch.

Speaking on the branding of the hotels, he said that the Crown will be the name used

The Wellness Retreat is one of Rajesh’s dream projects. “This property is going to be an ecotourism venture with a wellestablished brand of wellness to be associated with that. I have already s t a r t e d s h o r t l i s t i n g properties in the hinterland of Goa and will set up resorts with well-equipped cottages where w e ’ l l u s e a n international wellness brand to provide a state-of-thea r t w e l l n e s s t r e a t m e n t experience to o u r g u e s t s , ” R a j e s h s a i d adding that he has been working on this project for nearly three years, “It was on hold due to Covid but now we have started working on it again This p r o j e c t i s g o i n g t o b e completely eco-friendly with no concrete used in the construction of the cottages. Instead, we will use mud and wood to build all the cottages. In fact, this will be a first whereby we’ll have an organic farm for our vegetables which will be used by our chefs to prepare food grown by us without the use of chemicals, fertilizers so free from adulteration.”

Rajesh makes a point to say that despite all the expansion plans, his focus will remain on Goa He was very much inspired by the values and philosophy of the life that his father Shri Vishwasrao Dempo believed in and followed them truly. “We are focusing on the Goa market which I am aware is comparatively smaller for the dreams that I have, but I am not in favour of running a f t e r m o n e y a n d j u s t generating profits. I want the community to receive the benefits from our ventures and ‘serving the community’ is my motto I have the same inclination: working for the betterment of the people of Goa.”

Speaking on the expansion plans, Rajesh said this is a process “We believe in innovation because to serve b e t t e r , i n n o v a t i o n i s necessary. We have already made a roadmap and started a d v a n c i n g t o w a r d s development and it is just a matter of time before you will see very good results. The new expansion plans will take our business to a new level I foresee good opportunities and growth, and we will be able to come out of the recession mode by the end of this year,” he said.

For any economy or business to flourish, all external factors s u c h a s g o v e r n a n c e , infrastructure, and stable political setup play a crucial role. So even during the recession, the stability of these elements can eliminate most of the hindrances to the smooth functioning of the state and its economy. Vision Dempo works with the same perspective and aims to serve the local community in every way. Maybe that is the real reason behind their steadfast growth.

NO GST ON HOUSE RENT FROM 1ST JANUARY 2023, LOOK WHAT NEW LAW SAY

connected to it, and many tenants had their assumptions The Validity of this rule is only applicable when you are taking a house on a Residential property for rent and carrying out some Interchange of Goods and Services.

How will Residential Property Be Taxed?

Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs (CBIC) has recently released new rules about the Goods and Service Tax (GST), which include no GST taxes will implement on residential units. The 47th of GST council Meeting presided over by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in June 2022, approved a slew of Changes to the Taxing scheme. Then the second modification Meeting went into effect on July 18, 2022. One of the most significant changes was that GST registered Tennent must Pay GST at the rate of 18% when Renting a residential dwelling.

for all the tenants who are taking Rental houses.

This rule was not clear in the first place, so let’s have a Quick Fact Check with this article.

To

applicable?

This new GST rule does not apply to the Salaried class people (NonGST registered). This is only Payable to the GST-registered Tennent, i e Those who are engaged to a Business income a n d t h e i n c o m e i s a b o v e Threshold (annually 20 lakhs). When this law was first declared there were many misconceptions

Here, the landlord being GST registered is Not A Compulsion, in this case, the Tennent plays the Responsibility Role, and this 18% GST is only applicable if the Tennent is GST registered. The payment will act through RCM (Reverse Charge Mechanism), which means the tenant or recipient will directly pay the taxes to the Government and Tennent can be Claimed as an input Tax Credit. Who will be affected by the new rule?

Many companies rent properties like Guest Houses or any organization as such makes use of any rental residential property for the employee, so in such cases, these companies and

organizations are payable for this additional tax on rents on such properties. Even if Tennent is e n g a g e d i n s m a l l - s c a l e Businesses like shops or any operational enterprise, any content creator who is renting a flat to record the content, every Business professional Operating F r o m r e n t e d R e s i d e n t i a l properties is subjected to the 18% GST as an addition to the rent (not to the landlord but to the government and being GSTregistered is mandatory).

But if the employee or any salaried person is taking a house on rent for Pure residential purposes then he/she is free from any additional GST tax on the rent.

Learning the correct information r e g a r d i n g a n y f i n a n c i a l statements is equally important. To understand if your situation applies to this additional tax payment make sure you consult your CA or tax consultant.

DETECTING EMOTIONS IN THE TECH WORLD

Born in Odisha and raised in various parts of India due to transferring job of her father, Kanan Tandi, the co-founder of CogniCue, had travelled across the country. The joint family setup and inter cast marriages in the family gave her an opportunity to understand multiple cultures and languages As a student, Kanan had always been extraordinary but she had been very average in extra-curricular activities. Kanan had multiple aspirations just like any other growing youth but her destiny lay in something very special and today she runs a very successful startup.

“I initially wanted to become an astronaut and then I wanted to become Indian Idol, so like many others, I was basically clueless about what to do! I also prepared for the civil service, but failed drastically and later pursued MBA from Symbiosis followed by MSc (Clinical Psychology) f r o m J a i n U n i v e r s i t y , Bangalore I just could not settle in any one of them so I started learning the NonVerbal Communication and Psychology. Finally, I founded my first company called “Body Speaks Better” and I gained k n o w l e d g e i n M i c r o E x p r e s s i o n s r e a d i n g , decoding voice and body and deception detection. I met Fasih, my co-founder in 2018, and found out he is an amazing coder We started hanging out together and one f i n e d a y , w e s t a r t e d CogniCue, which is into Emotion Detection, a SaaSbased platform.” Speaking about her journey t o w a r d s b u i l d i n g t h e CogniCue and her Cofounder Fasih, Kanan said “I started as a science student in my 12th, but later, moved to h u m a n i t i e s . I h a d a n opportunity to have several other courses and work in a different field. It is only after meeting Fasih, who I found to be very focused, that changed my perspective. From a distance, he looks like any other coder, but when you talk to him, you will know instantly that he knows his field in and out. He has been coding since he was 11 years of age. To start a tech company, we need two things: technology and domain. Fasih & I really make a strong team, as we both are bringing our own expertise to the table. Initially, we worked for 18 hours to train our system through data. The uniqueness of CogniCue is that we are

covering all three channels of c o m m u n i c a t i o n w h i c h currently no other startup is offering.”

The CogniCue startup has been funded by FiiRE, and speaking on that Kanan said, “Initially, we were making an Emotion Detection platform but at that point in time, we did not have a clear idea of which market to focus on. We started with Edtech, then moved to HRTech. We did not have many clients, nor was the revenue generating The amount we received as CCD, was very helpful to sustain initially because we had to travel for conferences. The main learning is making a 'must have' feature and selling it to a ' needy” market' S p e a k i n g a b o u t t h e challenges she said, “We faced multiple challenges. For funding related issues, how to sell, who to sell, how to make the first connection, which is the right marketplace etc. In short, related to any startup whatever problems are being faced, you name it, and most likely we might have faced it. I can tell you which is the area where we did not face the challenge That will be the technology and feature building and research & development.”

According to Kanan getting incubated with FiiRE has helped them a lot and it increased their exposure to a very different level “The constant support from FiiRE has also been there Other than that, Nasscom played a very important part in making it big for us. Initially, we were part of the 10,000 startups initiative and then we got into Deep Tech Club as well. Both the programs are of Nasscom and they also keep pushing the startups and making the right market connections for

KANAN TANDI & FASIH AHMAD FAKHRI

startups like us,” she said. About future plans she said their future plan is to enter into the BFSI sector entirely. “This is a sector where we are solving some real issues for the sector. So, what we are doing is analysing consumer videos during loan disbursements and insurance claims and providing them various metrics which can give them a risk score and a trust score, based on that they can move ahead

with the said consumer”. The CogniCue has specialised in Detecting Emotion “We are better than most of the emotion detection startups present in our country. Also, collectively we are at 88% of accuracy, but with continuous improvement and rigorous R&D, the overall accuracy will only be increased in the near future. This is also going to act as a speed breaker for a fraudulent consumer because

they will be told that they are going to be recorded for

t h e s a i d purpose We are looking at a significant reduction in fraud cases in the future,” said Kanan

“I feel that I am probably the best example of doing what you like and keep figuring things out unless you find the one. I have worked in multiple fields only to settle down with Psychology There is some area that is close to your heart, but it does not really give you money. There are fields that will give you money but not really the peace of mind. We need to find an area of work, which will give us

both. It takes time, but if the effort is continuous then eventually, we will find it. So, keep figuring things out and fail faster to learn new things,” she concluded.

WE NEED TO MOTIVATE AND INSPIRE EACH OTHER

S a n g i t a ' s h u s b a n d g o t transferred to Pune for official deputation and there she found a new opportunity to become self-reliant. “In Pune, I started working for the Kidzee School that had a Daycare centre. I started developing an interest in this field of work and after one year when we came back to Goa, the concept of daycare school remained interesting to me. Since I too had a toddler, working in the daycare centre in Goa meant that I could take care of my daughter along with the other kids. I joined the Nursery Teachers Training Institute and a Montessori Teacher Training Institute named Bharat Sevak Samaj in Mushtifund High School Panjim where I completed my diploma.”

Sitting idly at home was not a part of Sangita's DNA and she that daycare was the best option to keep herself busy. “During those days there were no daycare units in Mapusa and Thivim area and I grabbed that opportunity and finally after a period of 3-4 months, I s t a r t e d a d a y c a r e & playschool on 29 September 2009. Initially, we had only 14 students enrolled with us and as of now, we have 80 s t u d e n t s e v e r y y e a r associated with us. I am not looking for a big number of students as I want to provide proper care and education making every child a confident and self-dependent child,” she said.

provide a trustworthy and safe environment to the little ones. I also juggle between my home life and career just like any other working woman The toughest challenge faced by me was dealing with the little ones and handling a group of toddlers' needs, was a lot. They really tested my patience and was a real task in the beginning, but now we are at the perfection level and can handle toddlers at ease”. Speaking about dealing with the day-to-day task Sangita said that it is not a job for her as she loves to work with children “Each child's eyes sparkle have something to say. In the same way, all my staff too are passionate and dedicated towards their work. Dealing with students a little more with love and care makes them comfortable with the environment which helps them to gel well and adapt to the school environment faster,” she added.

The dream venture of Sangita, Kid's Palace Preschool & Daycare Center started on 29th September 2009 with just a daycare centre that had a common class for all.

A BCom graduate, Sangita had done her diploma in the aviation industry from Frankfinn Institute of Airhostess Training with the dream of flying high in the skies but her father got her married and all those came to a halt. However, she continued to work in the travel field and was a reservation agent at Air Travel Agency. Then she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl and that changed her life from a working lady to a busy mom. This may sound like just another story of a woman who in the end settles down in the family giving up all her dreams, but that is not the case here and this story has much more to it so let's look at the journey of Sangita.

Sangita enjoys her work to the core. “Each day is beautiful in the company of the little ones, although I do face problems just like in any other business such as dealing with parents. As we run a daycare too, a few parents take us for granted and treat us like their servants, whereas my whole idea of starting the daycare was to

“We started with a playgroup class for toddlers aged 2 to 6 years. Now we have upgraded from daycare to Preschool and have an activity centre for students in age 2 to 10 years. Other than academics we have extra co-curricular activities available for students such as yoga, gymnastics, singing, dancing abacus, phonics etc. I have faced ups and downs, but I never gave up on anything. It is our duty to take responsibility for taking care of children, inculcating good habits in them and making them selfreliant.”

Sangita relays that many daycare centres had been closed down during Covid but

her love for the little ones and p a s s i o n f o r i m p a r t i n g education kept her going during the most challenging times “We had faced a financial crisis during Covid just like any other business. But I kept going constantly working on new ideas to promote online learning and m a k e o n l i n e l e a r n i n g interesting. Students aged 3 to 6 get distracted very quickly so engaging them in an online class was a real issue for us! T h e r e a r e m a n y o t h e r preschools that had asked their staff to leave or take a b r e a k b e c a u s e o f t h e financial crisis but I never laid off a single staff member.. Despite the financial situation during covid, we managed to adjust to the scenario and manage everything the right way. I thank the almighty God a n d m y h u s b a n d f o r

supporting me in the toughest times.”

Speaking on future plans, Sangita said that she wants to focus on education of young minds. “I plan to focus on my journey and help these little ones grow into smart and confident children. Looking at the competitive world we need to shape each of our students wisely and into responsible and good human beings. I have found my inner flame and power and I have no intention of letting it go out. As an early childhood educator, I am a member of a beautiful community, that constantly thinks of these young kids and their needs.”

“Looking at the present scenario where nowadays we see one in ten children who are found to be a special child or child with a disability. A special child can be more

specified as a hyperactive child, an introvert, or an autistic child. Soon, I would love to work for all children with disabilities or for special children.

Children who have difficulty communicating and caring for themselves are the most likely ones to be out of school, regardless of education level. It's sad that these students are also been excluded from society in a way that no child ever should be. What I believe is exclusion or excluding students with disability is often t h e c o n s e q u e n c e o f invisibility. If we fail to count or consider and consult these children, we are failing to help them to reach their vast potential.”

G i v i n g a m e s s a g e t o e s p e c i a l l y t h e w o m e n , Sangita said, “Every woman has her own skills Every

woman is good at something or the other. Women who want to stand strong in life have to mould her future by using her skills and talent. Do not let it go in vain. Make use of the same so that you will never have to look back or depend on anyone else. But while you do this also remember to be grounded and down to earth. Many parents have told me that I inspired them. I'm glad if I have done so but I'm not great. We should motivate and inspire each other to be something in life. Let's do it with a true heart- everyone has to find their own sky which has no limits. Society has set an ideal that a woman can stand on her own feet by taking care of her home and life, taking full advantage of her skills, learning, education and knowledge.”

DISADVANTAGES TO YOGA

Akshata tells us how she started out in yoga. “One day it so happens that my seniors at the Mary Immaculate school were searching for new participants for the school team to represent the school i n a t a l u k a - l e v e l y o g a competition and they wanted me to join them. I was in 4th standard. They were looking for a flexible student who could touch their toes without bending the knees. I was able to do it and that marked the beginning of a new journey for me into the competitive arena of Yoga.”

After being selected in the team, the next task was to learn a couple of Asanas which were taught to her. “I followed their instructions and practised those Asanas at home before going to school the next day,” said Akshata. When I asked her whether she was doing any Yoga activities before this, she said she used to imitate actions shown on TV but she did not know then that it was actually Yoga “After getting into the school team my confidence levels increased and I decided to take this seriously. I started practising daily and prepared myself for the competition. I achieved remarkable results and the journey towards real success started from the second year, when I was in the 6th standard.”

Akshata's parents were being very supportive of all her endeavours. “My parents always supported me in whatever I have done and when I informed them about my selection in the Yoga team, they were very happy and w o u l d a t t e n d a l l m y performances without fail. They have also been a part of all my competitions. I went from Taluka level competitions to the district level and finally state level.”

Speaking on the competition

Akshata said that she faced a major challenge from the schools in south Goa. “There was always a stiff competition on Taluka, district and state level between Ponda and Tiswadi I used to observe them very minutely and based on the level of challenge I used to practice harder for the competition. I have learned t h e i r s t r e n g t h s a n d weaknesses and found out the reason behind my defeat which lead to my victory later on,” she added.

Akshata Halarnkar is an 18-year-old student of Dhempe College who is aspiring to be the national and international champion but is already a gold medallist in Yoga. She is also a yoga teacher who began yoga at the tender age of 9 and later on participated in numerous competitions at taluka and district level besides representing Goa 6 times at national level.

“In the 6th standard I started training under the guidance of m y t e a c h e r H e m a K e n i Randhava who was also my yoga coach with whom I trained until 8th standard. I could not able to contribute much in my 5th standard as I was new to Yoga activities so it was a learning process for me, I watched them closely and practised hard for the next year, it was my defeat in the 5th standard that gave me encouragement to work hard

After winning the Taluka level competition in 6th standard, Akshata had no looking back and she kept climbing the ladder of success with every competition. “I got first place in the 6th standard and that was the beginning of my new j o u r n e y a f t e r w h i c h I p a r t i c i p a t e d i n m a n y programs. When I was in 6th class there was a National Yoga Day organised by Shri Narendra Modi ji in Goa in which I had participated and it was the first time I had performed on the stage in front of a big gathering,” she said.

Akshatra tells us that there are many different types of Yoga Asanas. “There are traditional Asanas which are normally performed by many and there

A s a n a s T h e costume also needs to be as p e r t h e guidelines and n e e d s t o b e comfortable and the music and dance need to be very aesthetic and suitable for the postures,” she added.

Speaking on her experience at the national level competition

Akshata said that it was very tough to compete with the s t u d e n t s c o m i n g f r o m different states in India. “For my first nationals, my parents also were not there with me. There I had to perform both

traditional as well as Artistic Yoga but I got disqualified due to the timing set by the jury. I continue to compete and finally, when I was in 8th Grade we got 4th place at the national level which was my biggest achievement at the national level,” she said.

Akshata is a state-level Gold Medalist in Yoga. “Currently I am practising for the senior national-level competition and I'm currently training for the nationals. I do not have a coach as I train students myself so keep practising for the national level competition but when I come acrossa roadblock, I always consult my seniors and colleagues and we also practice together on Sundays,” she said.

Akshata currently runs classes for Yoga aspirants and for those ladies who want to remain fit and learn Yoga. “I am still in college doing my 1st year and after finishing college I take Yoga Classes at G y a n V i k a s S c h o o l i n Porvorim This has also become my source of earning

and money that I get from this spend on getting into the national level competition that I will be participating in next year,” she said.

Speaking on the challenges she said it's time that she's struggling to find “I go to college which is in the afternoon and after finishing that I go to my Yoga Classes and when I reach home, I continue with the college work which becomes very tiring but to come out of this routine I am trying to start my practice in the morning, before going to college. Starting at 6 am to 10 am may be the only alternative now for me to practice for the nationals,” she said.

Speaking on giving a message to the students who aspire to get into Yoga she said that Yoga not only makes your body flexible, but also makes it strong and healthy. “Yoga only has advantages. It does not have any disadvantages or side effects at all. According t o m e e v e r y o n e s h o u l d practice Yoga and keep their body healthy.”

ASPIRING TO REPRESENT GOA IN THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA

Goa is a land of footballers, and the state has given many talented footballers to the country, many of whom have also received accolades and a w a r d s f o r t h e i r a c h i e v e m e n t s B r i s o n

Fernandes is one such young footballer who is aiming to become the next champion and take Goa's name to an international level.

Brison Fernandes comes from the beautiful village of Lotoulim situated in south Goa. “I grew up in Loutolim, Goa and started playing football at the age of around 10. My career as a professional footballer began when I signed for Salgaocar's U14 team. I played with them for two years, as a striker. It was in 2016-17 that I signed for FC Goa,” said Brison.

Brison believes that football is a sport where one can make different kinds of decisions for any situation. “Each decision will have a different outcome. Hence, learning the basics of the sport involves knowing the right decisions to make in different situations I'm grateful to all my coaches who mentored me and developed my abilities: it's their guidance that helped me reach where I am now.”

Brison tells us that he played f o r t h e F C G o a Developmental Team in the AIFF Elite League, the GFA U20 First Division League, the Goa Pro League, the Goa Police Cup and the Reliance Foundation Development League. “I won the GPL and Police Cup with the Dev Team in 2019 In 2021, I got promoted to the FC Goa first team and won the Durand Cup. And finally, this season in the ISL, I scored two goals, both in home matches in front of friends and family at Fatorda. These were some of the best moments in my career as a footballer.”

Goa is a land of footballers, and the state has given many talented footballers to the country, many of whom have also received accolades and awards for their achievements. Brison Fernandes is one such young footballer who is aiming to become the next champion and take Goa's name to an international level.

Speaking about challenges, Brison says, “Challenges and setbacks are part and parcel of every footballer's career. They happen in the form of injuries, not getting as many chances to play as you'd like etc. I've had such challenges in my career as well, but as a youngster, I was always told by my coaches to keep believing in myself and work hard because tough times also pass. Whenever I face such challenges, I look at those as opportunities to improve because whenever I do get another chance, I need to be ready to perform.”

Like anyone else, Brison also has high ambitions . “One of my ambitions till last year was to start in an ISL match for FC Goa, and I got that chance finally in December. It was an important moment for me because it testified that I'm progressing well and gave me e n c o u r a g e m e n t . G o i n g forward, I'm working hard to become a confirmed firstchoice for my coach Carlos Pena, and I look forward to contributing to winning trophies with my team. I want to win the ISL League Winners' Shield, the ISL Trophy, the Super Cup and everything else possible while wearing the colours of my Club FC G o a

“It's also my dream to play for the Indian National Team. Every youngster dreams of doing it, and it would be an honour to represent my country in an international match,” he concluded.

GST AMENDMENTS PROPOSED IN BUDGET 2023

The Union Budget of 2023 has proposed several amendments to the GST Act. This is an attempt to explain the important amendments in simple language. It may be noted that the amendments will be in force only after being passed by the Parliament and state assemblies so as of now they are only proposals.

1. Amendment to Section 10 of the C G S T A c t - E a r l i e r p e r s o n s supplying goods via E-commerce operators were not allowed to opt for the “Composition scheme” in GST which had lesser compliances and tax rates In effect, smaller b u s i n e s s m e n w h o c h o s e composition scheme to reduce compliances, were blocked from selling goods via E-commerce operators This restriction is proposed to be removed thus even small businesses who are under composition scheme will be able to s e l l g o o d s v i a e c o m m e r c e operators. The only catch here is, composition dealers were not allowed to sell goods interstate, and that restriction continues so even though they are allowed to sell via E-commerce operators now, they cannot sell beyond their state of registration Are e-commerce websites ready for such features?

2. Amendment to Section 17 of the CGST Act - The supply of goods to another person before the said goods are cleared with customs for h o m e c o n s u m p t i o n , i s n o w proposed to be included in the scope of “exempt supplies” in context of the need to reverse input tax credit in relation to exempt supplies.

3. Amendment to Section 17 of the CGST Act – Corporates often purchase goods or procure services which are then given/donated to beneficiaries under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as mandated by the Companies Act. There has been a raging debate on whether the corporate can claim input tax credit on such purchases of goods and services. It has been argued by businesses that this is an expenditure in the course of their business and also helps in brand building etc The budget now proposes to end this debate and states that no benefit of input tax credit will be available on such purchases used for CSR as per Companies Act.

4. Amendment to Section 23 of the CGST Act – Section 22 of the CGST Act prescribed that businesses whose supplies crossed a particular threshold (In Goa: Rs 20 lacs for services and Rs 40 lacs for goods), had to register for GST. Section 23 on the other hand specified those suppliers who need not register under GST even if their supplies crossed the above thresholds (egs those making only exempt supplies). Further, section 24 of the CGST Act stated that certain categories of businesses required to register under GST mandatorily, even if their supplies were below the threshold, just because they entered a specific transaction (egs: obtaining services which were liable to GST on reverse charge basis such as lawyer services). Thus there was a conflict between these provisions in certain cases for egs: A doctor was not required to be registered under GST (vide Sec 23) since his turnover was fully exempt from GST, but if the same doctor obtained some services from a lawyer, then would section 24 override section 23 and make him register under GST? This conflict has been resolved stating that if you are exempted from registering under GST vide Sec 23, then section 24 would not apply to you This amendment will be e f f e c t i v e f r o m 0 1 / 0 7 / 2 0 1 7 retrospectively, once notified.

5. Amendments to Section 37, 39, 44 and 52 of the CGST Act – Now taxpayers will be able to file GSTR returns GSTR 1, GSTR 3B, GSTR 9 and GSTR 8 respectively, only till three years from the due date of furnishing the said return. Thus, the budget proposes an outer limit as to by when a taxpayer can file GST returns

6. Amendments to Section 132 of t h e C G S T A c t – Va r i o u s amendments are proposed to dilute/reduce punishments for offences in GST:

a The following activities have been decriminalised

- obstructs or prevents any officer in the discharge of his duties under this Act;

- tampers with or destroys any material evidence or documents;

- fails to supply any information which he is required to supply under this Act or the rules made thereunder or (unless with a

reasonable belief, the burden of proving which shall be upon him, that the information supplied by him is true) supplies false information

b The monetary threshold for launching prosecution for the offences under the Act has been increased from Rs 1 Crore to Rs 2 crore, except for the offences related to issuance of invoices without supply of goods or services or both.

7. Insertion of new Section - A new section 158A in the CGST Act is being inserted so as to provide for prescribing manner and conditions for sharing of the information furnished by the registered person in his return or in his application of registration or in his statement of outward supplies, or the details uploaded by him for generation of electronic invoice or E- way bill or any other details, as may be prescribed, on the common portal with such other systems, as may be notified.

8. Paras 7, 8 (a) and 8 (b) were inserted in Schedule III of CGST Act, 2017 with effect from 01.02.2019 to keep certain transactions/ activities, such as supplies of goods from a place outside the taxable territory to another place outside the taxable territory, high sea sales and supply of warehoused goods before their home clearance, outside the purview of GST. In order t o r e m o v e t h e d o u b t s a n d ambiguities regarding taxability of such transactions/ activities during the period 01.07.2017 to 31.01.2019, provisions are being incorporated to make the said paras effective from 01 07 2017 However, no refund of tax paid shall be available in cases where any tax has already been paid in respect of such transactions/ activities during the period 01.07.2017 to 31.01.2019.

9. Amendment to Section 12 of the IGST Act – This amendment targets specifically service of transport of goods by a transporter to a place outside India i.e export of goods. As per current provisions, such transporter had to charge IGST to his recipient, even though recipient was in the same state as him, only because the goods were being moved to a place outside India. The budget now proposes to remove this clause thereby allowing a transporter to charge CGST/SGST to an exporter in cases where both are in the same state.

WHY SQUATS ARE SO GOOD FOR YOU

maintain proper form, include your abdominals and inner and outer thighs.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING SQUATS?

1. Squats will give you stronger glutes. Anybody who's wanted to build a stronger butt knows the value of squats. That strength can t r a n s l a t e i n t o i m p r o v e d performance in sports activities that require sprinting and jumping, as well as those you do in daily life, especially if you're older, according to a study in Yoga & Physical Therapy. Strong glutes can also aid you in walking, running, and hiking.

Squats First and Foremost Does Is Fire Up the Glutes, Quadriceps, and Calf Muscles

If you seriously want to add strength training moves to your workout routine that will deliver big benefits? TRY SQUATS. Doing them regularly can build lots of strength, and you 'll notice everyday tasks are easier, whether it's squatting down to pick something up off the floor, sitting down in a chair, or reaching for something on the b o t t o m s h e l f a t t h e general/supermarket store.

WHAT MUSCLES DO SQUATS WORK?

Why do fitness trainers love to prescribe squats? “Not only is the squat a fundamental movement pattern that has functional carryover to many activities of daily living and sport, it also challenges and strengthens many muscles.

There are three categories of muscles involved in a squat. They include the gluteus maximus, the largest muscle in your butt; the quadriceps muscles, which include the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis obliquus, and vastus intermedius; and a deep calf muscle called the soleus.

There are also helper muscles, like those in the inner thighs, hamstrings, back, and calves, while stabilizers, which help you

2. Squats help with functionality (particularly as you age). Add squats to your fitness program, and you'll develop functional leg strength and mobility, which may make it easier to get up off the floor,

3 Squats can strengthen your bones. Weight-bearing activities are best for building bones, and squats definitely count. “Squats help make hip and leg bones and joints more resilient through improved bone mineral density

4. Squats will help you burn calories The more muscles an exercise uses, the more calories you'll burn. Squats certainly fit that requirement, as they come with a high caloric expenditure, I S S Q U A T S S A F E F O R EVERYONE?

Squats are safe for most people. There may be variations that may be less appropriate for certain individuals, depending on their medical and injury history, training history and status, and goals Variations of squats include: the overhead squat, a jump squat, a goblet squat, and a box squat. The key is finding a squat variation and progression you can do without pain or risk of a particular condition worsening or injury risk increasing. For instance, if you have a knee or hip injury, you might need to modify how wide you stand or how deep you squat, If you're unsure, check with your Trainer before doing squats.

HOW MANY SQUATS SHOULD YO U B E D O I N G A N D H O W OFTEN?

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (PDF) recommends that adults do strength training of all major muscle groups two or more nonconsecutive days a week. Yet how often you do squat and how many you do will depend on many variables, including how intense the squat is, what variation you're doing, what your goals are, what your current fitness level is, and how much rest and recovery time you'll need, The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends doing 3 set of 8 to 12 repetitions if you're healthy, but you may want to do more if you're trying to build muscular endurance or less if muscular strength is your goal.

2. Lower your butt toward the floor by hinging at the hips and bending at the knees, making sure your knees track over the second and third toes and keeping your heels on the ground. As you do this, allow your glutes to push back and out behind your body as if you're sitting into a chair. Keep your chest up and head and neck in a neutral position. Lower to a depth that allows you to maintain proper form. For some individuals, that may be at a point where their thighs are parallel with the floor, while others may not be able to go nearly that low.

3. Push into your feet to push your body back up and away from the floor to stand up, moving your hips forward until you've returned to starting position.

4. Repeat.
