Chilterns Guide 2019

The White Hart Hotel, a 15th-century timber-framed coaching inn in the heart of St Albans, boasts a long and colourful history. With many of its original features still intact – carefully and lovingly preserved over the years – this establishment is rich in character and abundant in charm. Housed within the hotel is Tudors Restaurant & Bar. Old documents and drawings adorn the oak-panelled walls, floor-length curtains frame the leaded windows and the grand brick fireplace is stunning. Evening diners will be welcomed into a candlelit dining room that boasts wall lamps, cast-iron chandeliers and a warming fire in the colder months – dining rooms don’t come much more atmospheric than this. Tradition and elegance are also evident on the bill of fare. The menu features a host of modern British and Mediterranean dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Dishes change with the seasons, so a winter menu might start with the likes of braised British short ribs with jalapeño and spring onion salad, or maybe you’d prefer the impressive fish board comprising smoked trout, prawns, horseradish and pickled beetroot salad. Special marinated grilled pork belly with red cabbage and pears makes for a hearty main, while the seafood linguine comes with a generous helping of mussels, prawns and squid, along with cherry tomatoes in a white wine sauce. Dishes like this expertly showcase fresh, wholesome and beautifully cooked ingredients, as do the range of freshly prepared pasta dishes and pizzas with dough made daily in-house. Desserts include passion fruit crème brûlée, Baileys cheesecake, and sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and ice cream. What’s more, every Sunday there’s a fabulous Sunday carvery that includes succulent rib of beef and two other options – usually free-range local pork and either lamb or turkey, depending on the season. Make sure you book ahead, as this roast dinner is understandably very popular. The grand, historic setting, combined with polished service and well-executed food, makes this the ideal venue for any occasion. If you really want to make yourself comfortable, why not settle in for the night in one of the 15 unique guest rooms? With its central location opposite the famous St Albans Cathedral, this is the ideal base from which to explore the city.
