in These Italian Castles

BY VICTORIA L. HOFFMAN
Exploring castles in Italy can be met with enthusiastic appeal especially for those with interest in architecture and history as no two castles are alike given their broad spectrum of shapes and imposing appearances. Perhaps the greatest factors in determining their facades come from the political landscape and regional rivalries through the centuries as well as the historic age – the Italian Renaissance, medieval military style, Gothic, and Byzantine eras. With many properties restored to their former glory, it’s no wonder that present day generations of noble families still own and maintain their appearances and have turned these ancient relics into luxury hotels. In celebration of their culture and legacy, traditions can still be enjoyed and experienced – whether attending a medieval joust, a masked ball, a boar hunt, or opera.

From majestic towers to sumptuous palazzos overlooking vineyards and lush green rolling hillsides, it is easy to step back into history and become part of a fairytale. Be pampered with massages while gazing at ancient ruins from afar, sip on bold red wines at sunset, and enjoy all of the modern amenities while enjoying the authentic feel and flavor of where queens and kings once dined, slept, and fought for their domain.

Travel tip: Visit the Tuscan countryside in early fall and take advantage of the truffle hunts and festivals that are held on an annual basis. We also like the Palio di Siena, a traditional horserace, that is held twice per summer in July and August. As this article goes to print, please be advised that many of these castles are currently closed due to COVID-19. With your safety in mind, please check the websites for updates.
